1. Indoor and soil radon measurements in the Hyblean Foreland (South-East Sicily)

Abstract: Indoor radon behavior in two sites of SE Sicily was studied as a function of the soil radon concentration. The chosen locations were Ragusa and Modica towns, placed in the Hyblean Plateau (northern margin of the African Plate). Soil samples were analysed by gamma spectrometry to determine the amount of radionuclides. Indoor air and soil gas radon measurements were simultaneously performed in both sites using active detectors. Radon in soil was measured one meter deep. A positive correlation was obtained between indoor radon concentration and the soil gas concentration.

2. Gas radon emission related to geodynamic activity on Mt. Etna

Abstract: We report preliminary observations on possible correlations between anomalies of subsoil radon concentration and geodynamical events on Mt. Etna. In recent years several studies have been carried out on radon as a precursor of geophysical events, most of them performed either on tectonic or volcanic areas. The peculiarity of our investigation lies on the choice of the etnean region, in which tectonic and volcanic features are both present. In order to characterize Mt. Etna features by investigating radon gas in soil, two stations were located along the NE-SW direction on Mt. Etna. Each of the two stations is fitted with a radon detector, a 3D seismic station and a meteorological station. Differences in the radon concentration trend in the data from north and south flanks could be linked to different faulting mechanisms and then to different mechanisms of radon uprising. The increase in soil radon concentration could be related to both seismic and volcanic events.

Abstract: The new detector CHIMERA, in its final 4π configuration, has been installed at Laboratori Nazionali del Sud (LNS) in Catania in January 2003. Beams of different energies ranging from protons to Au ions were delivered by the Tandem and the Super Conducting Cyclotron for nuclear reaction studies, in agreement with the approval of the Scientific Advisory Committee of LNS. Recent experimental results confirm very low energy thresholds of the trigger (below 0.5 MeV/nucleon), ensured within a wide dynamical range. Good characteristics of identification of light charged particles and heavy fragments have been obtained by using three detection techniques: Δ E-E , Δ E -time of flight, and the Pulse-Shape discrimination method. We present results of recent analysis concerning the production of intermediate mass fragments (IMF) in semi-peripheral collisions. Our results combined with theoretical Boltzmann-Nordheim-Vlasov simulations clearly demonstrate the presence of very fast processes of IMF production in the overlapping region of the target and projectile nuclei during re-separation, i.e. in the time scale comparable with the collision time. Evidence for slower, sequential-like production of IMF's is also shown.

Abstract: We analyzed the $^{93}Nb$ on $^{nat}Mg$ reaction at 30 MeV/nucleon in the aim of disentangling binary sequential decay and multifragmentation decay close to the energy threshold, i.e. $\simeq 3$ MeV/nucleon. Using the backtracing technique applied to the statistical models GEMINI and SMM we reconstruct simulated charge, mass and excitation energy distributions and compare them to the experimental ones. Abstract: Proton therapy represents the most promising radiotherapy technique for external tumor treatments. At Laboratori Nazionali del Sud of the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN-LNS), Catania (I), a proton therapy facility is active since March 2002 and 140 patients, mainly affected by choroidal and iris melanoma, have been successfully treated. Proton beams are characterized by higher dose gradients and linear energy transfer with respect to the conventional photon and electron beams, commonly used in medical centers for radiotherapy.In this paper, we report the experience gained in the characterization of different dosimetric systems, studied and/or developed during the last ten years in our proton therapy facility.

Abstract: Proton Computed Tomography (or pCT) is a new imaging technique based on the use of high energy proton beams (200–250 MeV) replacing of the commonly adopted X-rays CT. pCT that was firstly proposed in the 1960s but only nowadays, with the continued establishing of new proton therapy centers around the world, the interest in it is growing. The use of protons for tomographic images can represent, in fact, a big enhancement in the quality of a proton therapy treatment either in the patient positioning as well as in the accuracy of the dose calculation for the treatment planning phase. In this paper, after a brief introduction on pCT principles, the main hardware and software characteristics of a first pCT prototype in development by our group (the Italian PRIMA collaboration) will be presented. The role of Monte Carlo simulation in developing will be also emphasized, using the GEANT4 simulation toolkit.

7. Evidence of soil radon as tracer of magma uprising in Mt. Etna

Abstract: Soil radon has been monitored at one fixed site located in the northeastern flank of Mt. Etna, high-risk volcano in Sicily. The aim of this study was the evaluation of a possible link between magma uprising and soil radon concentration. Continuous radon measurements were performed since July 2001. Comparison between the in-soil radon trend and the acquired meteorological series (Temperature, Humidity and Pressure) seems to confirm a general seasonal correlation; nevertheless some anomalies suggest a possible dependence of the radon concentration on volcanic dynamics, as confirmed by the volcanic tremor and strain-release analysis.

Abstract: Soil radon investigation, using a continuous measurement device, has been performed on Mt. Etna in order to observe possible anomalies due to seismic and/or volcanic activity. In October 2002 an eruptive event occurred. Measurements, performed on the NE flank, have shown a possible correlation between eruptive activity of the volcano and soil radon concentration anomaly. The study of the seismic activity recorded in the same flank has, also, allowed to characterize the volcano dynamics and to correlate it with the variations of radon. The obtained results seem to indicate a possible dependence on volcanic activity of the radon concentration.

Abstract: Diamond is potentially a very suitable material for use as on-line radiation dosimeter. Recent advances in the synthesis of polycrystalline diamond by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) techniques have produced material with electronic properties suitable for dosimetry applications. In this work the possibility to use a segmented commercial CVD detector in the dosimetry of proton beams has been investigated. The response as function of dose, dose rate, the priming and the rise time have been investigated thoroughly. Abstract: Using the Monte Carlo simulation tool GEANT4, we simulated the hadron-therapy beam line of the Centro di AdroTerapia ed Applicazioni Nucleari Avanzate (CATANA) center. This is the unique Italian hadron-therapy facility in which 62-MeV proton beams are used for the radiotherapeutic treatment of choroidal and iris melanomas. All the elements, such as diffusers, range shifters, collimators, and detectors, typical of a proton-therapy line were modeled. The beam line provides an ideal environment for the experimental testing and validation of the software developed. The software architecture was developed, and the validation of the software is in its final stage. Simulated ranges, energy distribution, depth and lateral dose distributions for full energy proton beams will be compared to the experimental results obtained at Laboratori Nazionali del Sud (LNS) with different detectors.

Abstract: At the Laboratori Nazionali del Sud (LNS) in Catania (Italy), light radioactive ion beams have been produced through the In Flight Fragmentation method, using 18O and 13C at 55 MeV/A as primary beams impinging on a 9Be production target. Elastic scattering angular distributions of 16C+p and 16C+d at 50 MeV/A, 10Be+p at 56 MeV/A and 13B+d at 52 MeV/A systems were measured by using the CHIMERA (Charge Heavy Ion Mass and Energy Resolving Array) multidetector and kinematical coincidence technique. Abstract: The CHIMERA 4/spl pi/ detector trigger system is described. The trigger decisions are based on a combination of geometrical multiplicity of detected particles and other logic signals. The trigger can manage the buffer memory of the used analog to digital converters. This allows performance of parallel data conversion and readout and substantial improvement of the acquisition system dead-time performances. The trigger module generates all the necessary gate signals for the converters and the control signals necessary to synchronize the readout. It also allows the remote control of the whole system.

Abstract: CHIMERA is a 4π multidetector for charged particles available at Laboratori Nazionali del Sud (INFN‐LNS). A new method to measure the time scale of the emission of nuclear fragments is described, together with some applications in the field of the isospin dynamics of heavy‐ion collisions. Competition between fusion‐like and binary reactions near the energy threshold for nuclear multifragmentation is discussed. Opportunities are pointed out to use the detector at low and intermediate energies using the kinematical‐coincidence method.

Abstract: The dosimetric behaviour of a Scanditronix p-type silicon diode and a PTW natural diamond detector was studied in low-energy proton beams in the 8.3-21.5 MeV range. The properties investigated were linearity, reproducibility, dose rate dependence, energy and linear energy transfer (LET) dependence. The influence of detector thickness on the results of depth dose measurements was also demonstrated. A Markus parallel plate ionization chamber was used for reference dosimetry. Silicon diode and diamond detectors showed linearity at therapeutic dose level, reproducibility better than 1% (1sigma) and sensitivity variation with dose rate and proton energy.

Abstract: CHIMERA (Charged Heavy Ions Mass and Energy Resolving Array), a new 4/spl pi/ detector for charged particles is under development at various sites of the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare. This paper describes the new data acquisition system built to handle the signals coming out from the detector with a rate up to 1 kHz on almost 5000 electronic channels. The required average throughput for the system is in the order of the 1 MB/s. The used converters allow double-range conversion on 15 bits, in less than 50 /spl mu/s for all the 64 channels. The FDL link connects the different VME 9U crates performing a programmable hardware readout with a rate up to 100 MB/s. It uses a fast hardware protocol (Sparse Data Scan) to read the data buffers and send them to a FIC 8243 CPU board. A FIC 8243 dual-processor board forwards data (through Ethernet) to the analysis station (266 MHz Digital AlphaStation or Sun Sparcstation). A DLT (Digital Linear Tape) unit connected to analysis station is used to store data. The new data acquisition system has been tested under beam conditions at the Laboratorio Nazionale del Sud (Catania, Italy) and at GANIL (Caen, France).

Abstract: A digital signal processor (DSP) based two-parameter data acquisition system, connected to two analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) by means of an ad hoc built interface, was developed in order to perform real-time, on-line data processing. The interface, realized with programmable logic devices (PLD); may also work as a table of pre-computed values through which it is possible to carry out a simple analysis on the incoming or outcoming data.

Abstract: 124 Sn+ 64 Ni and 112 Sn+ 58 Ni reactions at 35 A MeV incident energy were studied by using the 688 Si–CsI telescopes of the forward part (1°⩽ θ lab ⩽30°) of CHIMERA multi-detector. The most central part, 1% of the total measured cross section was selected by means of a multidimensional analysis of the experimental observables. The detected isotopes of light fragments (3⩽ Z ⩽8) provided information on breakup temperatures of the emitting sources. The space–time structure of these sources was deduced from fragment correlations. An odd–even effect in the fragment production, enhanced by the isospin of the entrance channel, was observed. Freeze-out unbound neutron-to-proton relative densities for both studied reactions have been deduced, indicating for a possible isospin distillation mechanism related to a phenomenon of the liquid–gas phase transition in asymmetric systems.

Abstract: The production mechanism of intermediate-mass fragments (IMFs) with atomic numbers Z = 3 - 7 is explored in the intermediate energy regime, studying dissipative 48Ca+112Sn and 48Ca+124Sn reactions at E/A = 45MeV. Various aspects of IMF emission patterns point to an inelastic break-up type production mechanism involving excited projectile-like fragment from dissipative interactions. Isotopic yield ratios of identical IMFs from the above two dissipative reactions have been analysed using the "isoscaling" method. Observed trends are correlated with ground-state binding energy systematics and their relevance for an evaluation of the symmetry energy is discussed.

Abstract: International audience; We are currently developing a novel detection system featuring high angular and energy resolution and able to reconstruct the particles momentum at high precision for different physical cases in multi-fragmentation nuclear physics experiments, based on Double Sided Silicon Strip Detectors as ΔE stages aimed at performing also pulse shape analysis for fragments stopping therein. We carried out a detailed qualification of the performance of the strip detectors. In order to provide the detector response matrix we used a pulsed monoenergetic proton beam. The paper reviews the pulsed proton beam facility of the LaBeC of INFN - Sezione di Firenze and present the results of the characterization of the DSSSD prototypes with the pulsed proton beam. In particular we will discuss the amplitude and time response mapping and we will present the analysis of the dependence of the signal shape as a function of the position of interaction.

Abstract: Dynamical breakup of projectile-like fragments (PLF) following dissipative reactions of 48 Ca projectiles with 112 Sn and 124 Sn is shown to exhibit “isoscaling” regularities that can be understood in terms of phase space governed by ground state masses. Ambiguities in isoscaling parameters obscure information on nuclear symmetry energy at subnormal densities.

Abstract: Correlations between two or more particles can be used as a tool to explore the space-time features of nuclear reactions as well as spectroscopic properties of produced unbound clusters. In order to have new options to study the mentioned correlations, FARCOS (Femtoscope ARray for COrrelations and Spectroscopy) has been conceived as a compact high resolution array, composed of square telescopes. Abstract: In the framework of multi-fragmentation experiments the evolution towards two- (or more) particle correlations with stable and radioactive beams calls for the development of a novel detection system featuring high angular and energy resolution and able to reconstruct the particles momentum at high precision. The proposed detection system, named FARCOS (Femtoscopy ARray for COrrelations and Spectroscopy) will be beneficial for different physical cases. To this aim we are building a prototype detection system featuring four telescopes. Each telescope features an active area of 6.4 cm × 6.4 cm and is composed of three detection stages. The first ΔE stage is a Double Sided Silicon Strip Detector (DSSSD), 300 μm thick, featuring 32 × 32 strips. The second ΔE stage is again a DSSSD, 1500 μm thick, featuring 32 × 32 strips. The third stage, acting as calorimeter, is composed by four CsI(Tl) crystals with an active area of 3.2 cm × 3.2 cm and an absorption length of 6 cm forming a 2 × 2 matrix. The scintillators are readout by a Silicon photodiode 300 μm thick. The paper presents the relevant features of FARCOS and the expected performance of the silicon detection layers, with a special focus on the requirements of the frontend electronics for the DSSSD and the qualification of the DSSSD. In addition we report the first results of the preliminary on-beam tests. © 2012 IEEE.

Abstract: The history of the Etna volcano (Sicily) is marked by the alternation of brief intervals of eruptive activity and long periods of apparent inactivity. Usually during the periods of pseudo-inactivity, there are evident symptoms that the volcano is still active, e.g. fumaroles, hot springs and gaseous emissions. The variation of previous phenomena may be used to forecast seismic and volcanic- events. The aim of the research has been to evaluate and analyze the variation in emissions of ultra fine dusts and in soil Radon concentration, during the period of pseudo-inactivity, to obtain indexes able to forecast the possible events. Investigations have been carried out near two active faults on the slopes of Mt. Etna. The present paper presents the results of the monitoring survey, the analysis methodology and the development of the index to forecast possible seismic event. Research is currently in progress to refine the index which could be utilized not only to forecast possible seismic volcanic events, but also as a key to give early warning to the Civil Protection Agency so that they may be ready in time as soon as an eruptive event will occur.

Abstract: In-plane and out-of-plane angular correlations of fission fragments detected in coincidence with projectilelike residues produced in the nuclear collisions [sup 16]O+[sup 238]U at 110 MeV have been investigated. The data present the essential features of a targetlike sequential fission process. A quantitative description of the experimental angular anisotropies requires the storage in the fissioning nucleus of a mean angular momentum in agreement with a dominant mass transfer mechanism.

Abstract: After nine years of activity, about 220 patients have been treated at the CATANA Eye Protontherapy facility. A 62MeV proton beam produced by a Superconducting Cyclotron is dedicated to radiotherapy of eye lesions, as uveal melanomas. Research and development work has been done to test different dosimetry devices to be used for reference and relative dosimetry, in order to achieve dose delivering accuracy. The follow-up results demonstrated the efficacy of proton beams and encouraged us in our activity in the fight against cancer.

Abstract: Inclusive and semiexclusive elemental production cross sections of projectilelike fragments emerging in the collision [sup 16]O+[sup 238]U at 110.4 MeV have been investigated. Energy spectra and angular distributions of projectile residues with charge from [ital Z]=3 to [ital Z]=8 have been measured. It has been found that, as expected, the dominant reaction mechanism in the peripheral collisions is a mass transfer from projectile to target mainly dominated by a transfer of an [alpha] particle. The in-plane coincidences between projectilelike and fission fragments suggest that 14% of the total fission cross section is associated with the fission of a targetlike nucleus.

Abstract: After six years of activity 155 patients have been treated inside the CATANA (Centro di AdroTerapia ed Applicazioni Nucleari Avanzate) facility. CATANA is the first and unique proton therapy facility in which the 62 MeV proton beams, accelerated by a Superconducting Cyclotron, are used for the radio‐therapeutic treatments of choroidal and iris melanomas. Inside CATANA new absolute and relative dosimetric techniques have been developed in order to achieve the best results in terms of treatment precision and dose release accuracy. The follow‐up results for 42 patients demonstrated the efficacy of high energy protons in the radiotherapeutic field and encouraged us in our activity in the battle against cancer

Abstract: At LNS are available radioactive beams at tandem and intermediate energies provided respectively by the EXCYT and by the fragmentation FRIBS facilities. Using these beams, and the 4π detector CHIMERA, we want to study excitation and decay of resonances in light exotic nuclei populated with pick‐up stripping and other reaction mechanisms. Some preliminary results obtained with stable and unstable beams are reported.

An accurate evaluation ofE*, and of mass and charge configurations of the compound nucleus for (100÷300) MeV photons is calculated by means of an intranuclear-cascade model. It is found that, at high excitation energy, is no longer a correct variable to describe the excitation energy dependence ofPf.

Abstract: Proton therapy is a precise forms of radiation therapy that makes use of high energy proton compared to the conventional, more commonly used and less precise x-ray and electron beams. On the other hand, to fully exploit the proton therapy advantages, very accurate quality controls of the treatments are required. These are mainly related to the dose calculations and treatment planning. Actually dose calculations are routinely performed on the basis of X-ray computed tomography while a big improvement could be obtained with the direct use of protons as the imaging system. In this work we report the results of Monte Carlo simulations for the study of an imaging system based on the use of high energy protons: the proton computed tomography (pCT). The main limitation of the pCT and the current adopted technical solutions, based on the use of the most likely path (MLP) approximation are illustrated. Simulation results are compared with experimental data obtained with a first prototype of pCT system tested with 200 MeV proton beams available at the Loma Linda University Medical Center (LLUMC) (CA).

Abstract: Soil Radon has been monitored at two fixed sites located in the northeastern and southeastern flank of Mt. Etna. In this study we report the comparison between in-soil Radon concentration trend recorded in the SE flank and that one recorded in the NE one, where an in-soil Radon detection system is operating since 2001. The aim of this work was to implement the investigation area finding a suitable radon detection site, in the south-east flank of Mt. Etna, in order to better understand possible links between Radon anomalies and volcano dynamic. Radon data collected in NE and SE sites were compared with the volcanic tremor, frequency of occurrence of earthquakes and seismic strain-release recorded at a fixed 3D digital seismic station placed in the NE site. Same general in-soil Radon trends and anomalies were found in both sites. These results have confirmed the suitability of the chosen southeastern site for the in-soil Radon monitoring at Mt. Etna. The comparison of the recorded Radon concentration anomalies with seismicity and volcanic tremor trends, has also verified a possible link with the volcanic activity, as observed in our previous published studies.

Abstract: Due to their ballistic precision, apoptosis induction by protons could be a strategy to specifically eliminate neoplastic cells. To characterize the cellular and molecular effects of these hadrons, we performed dose-response and time-course experiments by exposing different cell lines (PC3, Ca301D, MCF7) to increasing doses of protons and examining them with FACS, RT-PCR, and electron spin resonance (ESR). Irradiation with a dose of 10 Gy of a 26,7 Mev proton beam altered cell structures such as membranes, caused DNA double strand breaks, and significantly increased intracellular levels of hydroxyl ions, are active oxygen species (ROS). This modified the transcriptome of irradiated cells, activated the mitochondrial (intrinsic) pathway of apoptosis, and resulted in cycle arrest at the G2/M boundary. The number of necrotic cells within the irradiated cell population did not significantly increase with respect to the controls. The effects of irradiation with 20 Gy were qualitatively as well as quantitatively similar, but exposure to 40 Gy caused massive necrosis. Similar experiments with photons demonstrated that they induce apoptosis in a significantly lower number of cells and in a temporally delayed manner. These data advance our knowledge on the cellular and molecular effects of proton irradiation and could be useful for improving current hadrontherapy protocols.
