1. A muographic study of a scoria cone from 11 directions using nuclear emulsion cloud chambers

Abstract

One of the key challenges for muographic studies is to reveal the detailed 3D density structure of a volcano by increasing the number of observation directions. 3D density imaging by multi-directional muography requires that the individual differences in the performance of the installed muon detectors are small and that the results from each detector can be derived without any bias in the data analysis. Here we describe a pilot muographic study of the Izu–Omuroyama scoria cone in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan, from 11 directions, using a new nuclear emulsion detector design optimized for quick installation in the field. We describe the details of the data analysis and present a validation of the results. The Izu–Omuroyama scoria cone is an ideal target for the first multi-directional muographic study, given its expected internal density structure and the topography around the cone. We optimized the design of the nuclear emulsion detector for rapid installation at multiple observation sites in the field, and installed these at 11 sites around the volcano. The images in the developed emulsion films were digitized into segmented tracks with a high-speed automated readout system. The muon tracks in each emulsion detector were then reconstructed. After the track selection, including straightness filtering, the detection efficiency of the muons was estimated. Finally, the density distributions in 2D angular space were derived for each observation site by using a muon flux and attenuation models. The observed muon flux was compared with the expected value in the free sky, and is 88 % ± 4 % in the forward direction and 92 % ± 2 % in the backward direction. The density values were validated by comparison with the values obtained from gravity measurements, and are broadly consistent, except for one site. The excess density at this one site may indicate that the density inside the cone is non-axisymmetric, which is consistent with a previous geological study.

Abstract

Characteristics of the early current quench (CQ) time in mitigated disruptions are studied for a full-current (5.5 MA) scenario in the JT-60SA superconducting tokamak. Self-consistent evolution of the plasma temperature and current density profiles during the early CQ phase before the plasma moves vertically is simulated using the axisymmetric disruption code INDEX for given impurity source profiles. It is shown that the hollow (flat) impurity density profiles peaks (flattens) the current density, and it causes a temporal change in the internal inductance in this phase. However the resultant CQ time is found to be insensitive to the impurity source profile for the same assimilated quantity. The simulation results are interpreted by the L/R model including the temporal change in the internal inductance as well as the effect of a gap between the plasma and the conducting vessel structures and stabilizing plates. This results will improve the accuracy to estimate the amount of impurity assimilated into plasma from the observed CQ rate in the massive gas injection (MGI) experiment planned in JT-60SA. The accessible range in which the CQ time can be scanned as well as the electron densities to suppress runaway electrons is also shown for different injected amounts of neon, argon, and their deuterium mixture under the limitation of the MGI gas amount. Mitigated disruptions in JT-60SA typically lead to the CQ time shorter than the vessel wall time, which is expected to produce relevant contributions to disruption mitigation in ITER and future reactors.

5. Feasibility of three-dimensional density tomography using dozens of muon radiographies and filtered back projection for volcanos

Abstract

This study is the first trial to apply the method of filtered back projection (FBP) to reconstruct three-dimensional (3-D) bulk density images via cosmic-ray muons. We also simulated three-dimensional reconstruction image with dozens of muon radiographies for a volcano using the FBP method and evaluated its practicality.The FBP method is widely used in X-ray and CT image reconstruction but has not been used in the field of muon radiography. One of the merits of using the FBP method instead of the ordinary inversion method is that it does not require an initial model, while ordinary inversion analysis needs an initial model.We also added new approximation factors by using data on mountain topography in existing formulas to successfully reduce systematic reconstruction errors. From a volcanic perspective, lidar is commonly used to measure and analyze mountain topography.We tested the performance and applicability to a model of Omuroyama, a monogenetic scoria cone located in Shizuoka, Japan. As a result, it was revealed that the density difference between the original and reconstructed images depended on the number of observation points and the accidental error caused by muon statistics depended on the multiplication of total effective area and exposure period.Combining all of the above, we established how to evaluate an observation plan for volcanos using dozens of muon radiographies.

Abstract

In 1957, Agodi predicted that the neutron angular distribution in (γ, n) reactions with a 100% linearly polarized γ-ray beam for dipole excitation should be anisotropic and universally described by the simple function of a+b⋅cos⁡(2ϕ) at the polar angle θ=90°, where ϕ is the azimuthal angle. However, this prediction has not been experimentally confirmed in over half a century. We have verified experimentally this angular distribution in the (γ, n) reaction for 197Au, 127I, and natural Cu targets using linearly polarized laser Compton scattering γ-rays. The result suggests that the (γ→, n) reaction is a novel tool to study nuclear physics in the giant dipole resonance region.

7. Experimental study of source of background noise in muon radiography using emulsion film detectors

Abstract

The aim of this study is to ascertain and confirm the source of background noise in cosmic-ray muon radiography (muography) using emulsion film detectors. For this, we build two types of emulsion detectors with different momentum thresholds and perform test measurements of an actual geoscientific target. This experiment reveals that contamination of nonsignal particles with momenta of less than 2 GeV c−1 cause significant systematic errors for the density estimation of muography. Utilizing the results of precedent studies, we conclude that the origin of these low-momentum particles is either electromagnetic components of air showers or cosmic-ray muons scattered in topographic material. In this paper, we analyze the emulsion data in detail, including the film-inefficiency compensation and momentum selection by applying an upper bound to the chi-square distribution for the data.

Abstract

The scientific publication landscape is changing quickly, with an enormous increase in options and models. Articles can be published in a complex variety of journals that differ in their presentation format (online-only or in-print), editorial organizations that maintain them (commercial and/or society-based), editorial handling (academic or professional editors), editorial board composition (academic or professional), payment options to cover editorial costs (open access or pay-to-read), indexation, visibility, branding, and other aspects. Additionally, online submissions of non-revised versions of manuscripts prior to seeking publication in a peer-reviewed journal (a practice known as pre-printing) are a growing trend in biological sciences. In this changing landscape, researchers in biochemistry and molecular biology must re-think their priorities in terms of scientific output dissemination. The evaluation processes and institutional funding for scientific publications should also be revised accordingly. This article presents the results of discussions within the Department of Biochemistry, University of São Paulo, on this subject.

The following is a brief synopsis of the 2021 summer Semiosalong event titled “Funktionskreis and the biosemiotic signifieds”, held at the Karl Ernst von Baer House, Tartu, Estonia, with presentations by the authors of this review. The included talks revolve around the idea of a ‘second major turn in biosemiotics’ following the more ‘Peircean inspired biology’ turn of the last few decades of the 20th century, and reconciling its findings with other theoretical foundations of general semiotics, such as structural semiology. The aesthetic and textual concerns of the latter invite commentary from the biosemiotic perspective.

Abstract

Integrated behavioral health (IBH) is an approach to patient care that brings medical and behavioral health providers (BHPs) together to address both behavioral and medical needs within primary care settings. A large, pragmatic, national study aimed to test the effectiveness and measure the implementation costs of an intervention to improve IBH integration within primary care practices (IBH-PC). Assess the time and cost to practices of implementing a comprehensive practice-level intervention designed from the perspective of clinic owners to move behavioral service integration from co-location toward full integration as part of the IBH-PC study. IBH-PC program implementation costs were estimated in a representative sample of 8 practices using standard micro-econometric evaluation of activities outlined in the implementation workbook, including program implementation tasks, remote quality improvement coaching services, educational curricula, and learning community activities, over a 24-month period. The total median cost of implementing the IBH-PC program across all stages was $20,726 (range: $12,381 - $60,427). The median cost of the Planning Stage was $10,258 (range: $4,625 - $14,840), while the median cost of the Implementation Stage was $9,208 (range: $6,017 – 49,993). There were no statistically significant differences in practice or patient characteristics between the 8 selected practices and the larger IBH-PC practice sample (N=34). This study aimed to quantify the relative costs associated with integrating behavioral health into primary care. Although the cost assessment approach did not include all costs (fixed, variable, operational, and opportunity costs), the study aimed to develop a replicable and pragmatic measurement process with flexibility to adapt to emerging developments in each practice environment, providing a reasonable ballpark estimate of costs associated with implementation to help guide future executive decisions.

Abstract

Choroidal anastomosis, a hemorrhage-prone periventricular collateral manifestation in Moyamoya disease, outflows to the cortex posterior to the central sulcus. The objective of the present study was to test whether the angiographic extent of revascularization posterior to the central sulcus contributes to the postoperative reduction of choroidal anastomosis.This retrospective cohort study included choroidal anastomosis-positive hemispheres before direct bypass surgery. The postoperative reduction of choroidal anastomosis was determined by a consensus of 2 raters according to the previous research. An imaging software automatically traced the angiographic revascularization area, which was subsequently divided into anterior and posterior parts by an anatomic line corresponding to the central sulcus. Each area was quantitatively measured as a percentage relative to the whole supratentorial area.Postoperative reduction of choroidal anastomosis was achieved in 68 (85.0%) of the 80 included hemispheres. The revascularization area posterior to the central sulcus was significantly larger in the hemispheres with reduction than in those with no reduction (mean, 15.2% [SD, 7.1%] versus 4.2% [SD, 3.4%],The results suggest that a larger revascularization posterior to the central sulcus is associated with postoperative reduction of choroidal anastomosis regardless of the extent of anterior revascularization. It might facilitate optimal selection of the revascularization site for preventing hemorrhage.

Abstract

Background Human epidermal growth factor 2 (HER2) is a potential driver oncogene. Although HER2-targeted precision therapy has been tested in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), the demographic characteristics of HER2-positive NSCLC have not been systematically defined. Methods Patients with pathologically confirmed stage IIIB/IV or recurrent NSCLC, Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status 0 to 2, were prospectively registered. HER2 immunohistochemistry (IHC) and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) assays were performed to screen patients. HER2 mutations were identified by using direct gene sequencing. The aim of this study was to clarify the frequency, characteristics, and outcome of HER2-positive NSCLC. HER2 was defined as positive if the tumor harbored IHC3+, IHC2+/FISH+, or exon 20 insertion mutations. Results Of the 1,126 tumors screened, 34 (3.0%) were IHC3+, and 34 (3.0%) were IHC2+/FISH+. Among the 724 epidermal growth factor receptor wild-type tumors, 21 (2.9%) were HER2-mutant tumors, including A775-G776insYVMA (n = 15). Interestingly, the IHC3+ tumors and mutant tumors were entirely exclusive. Female patients had HER2-mutant tumors more frequently, whereas both IHC3+ and IHC2+/FISH+ tumors were detected more often in male subjects and smokers. Patients with an HER2-aberrant tumor had a significantly worse prognosis than those with epidermal growth factor receptor-positive and anaplastic lymphoma kinase-positive tumors, possibly due to the low proportion that received HER2-targeted therapies (n = 15 [26%]) and low response rates of 0% and 14% in patients with HER2-overexpressing and HER2-mutant tumors, respectively. Conclusions This prospective large-scale cohort study is the first to show comprehensively the frequency and clinical demographic characteristics of those with HER2-positive advanced lung tumors in detail, providing critical historical data for future drug development against HER2-positive NSCLC. Future treatment strategies would be developed stratified according to the types of HER2 aberrations. Abstract

We present a model compound with a spin-1/2 spatially anisotropic frustrated square lattice, in which three antiferromagnetic interactions and one ferromagnetic interaction are competing. We observe an unconventional gradual increase in the low-temperature magnetization curve reminiscent of the quantum critical behavior between gapped and gapless phases. In addition, the specific heat and electron spin resonance signals indicate one-dimensional characteristics. These results demonstrate quantum critical behavior associated with one dimensionalization caused by frustrated interactions in the spin-1/2 spatially anisotropic square lattice., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Low-lying dipole transitions in $^{207}\mathrm{Pb}$ were measured via nuclear photon scattering using a quasimonochromatic, linearly polarized photon beam. The spins and/or parities of the states observed in $^{207}\mathrm{Pb}$ were determined from the intensity asymmetry of resonantly scattered $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ rays with respect to the polarization plane of the incident photon beam. The electric ($E1$) and magnetic ($M1$) dipole strengths were obtained for excitation energies from 5.49 to 6.75 MeV. The present experimental results, combined with $(\ensuremath{\gamma},n)$ data from the literature, were used to investigate the $E1$ and $M1$ photoabsorption cross sections near the neutron separation energy by comparison with predictions from the particle-vibration coupling with the quasiparticle random-phase approximation model.

Abstract

In 2008, we published the first set of guidelines for standardizing research in autophagy. Since then, this topic has received increasing attention, and many scientists have entered the field. Our knowledge base and relevant new technologies have also been expanding. Thus, it is important to formulate on a regular basis updated guidelines for monitoring autophagy in different organisms. Despite numerous reviews, there continues to be confusion regarding acceptable methods to evaluate autophagy, especially in multicellular eukaryotes. Here, we present a set of guidelines for investigators to select and interpret methods to examine autophagy and related processes, and for reviewers to provide realistic and reasonable critiques of reports that are focused on these processes. These guidelines are not meant to be a dogmatic set of rules, because the appropriateness of any assay largely depends on the question being asked and the system being used. Moreover, no individual assay is perfect for every situation, calling for the use of multiple techniques to properly monitor autophagy in each experimental setting. Finally, several core components of the autophagy machinery have been implicated in distinct autophagic processes (canonical and noncanonical autophagy), implying that genetic approaches to block autophagy should rely on targeting two or more autophagy-related genes that ideally participate in distinct steps of the pathway. Along similar lines, because multiple proteins involved in autophagy also regulate other cellular pathways including apoptosis, not all of them can be used as a specific marker for bona fide autophagic responses. Here, we critically discuss current methods of assessing autophagy and the information they can, or cannot, provide. Our ultimate goal is to encourage intellectual and technical innovation in the field.

Abstract

This chapter outlines the conceptual basis for using acids and acidulants on sodic or alkali soils and water and provides some guidelines for their usage. Application of acids, acidic gases, or aciduiants is a way to minimize soil structural degradation and associated reductions in water infiltration. It reviews and examines these unique characteristics of acids and aciduiants as amendments for reclaiming sodic soils. In some cases, acids or aciduiants may be applied for a dual purpose of lowering exchangeable sodium percentage and improving nutrient availability in Na-affected calcareous soils. The quantities of acids or aciduiants required to improve availability of certain micronutrients and phosphorus are usually determined empirically. In most calcareous soils, large quantities of acids or aciduiants are required if one attempts to dissolve CaCO3 from the entire root zone.

Abstract

This cohort study assesses whether chemoradiotherapy is associated with thoracic vertebral fractures in patients with esophageal cancer., Key Points Question Is chemoradiotherapy associated with thoracic vertebral fractures in patients with esophageal cancer? Findings Chemoradiotherapy was associated with thoracic vertebral fractures in a retrospective cohort study of 315 patients with stages I to III esophageal cancer who underwent endoscopic treatment, surgery, or chemoradiotherapy. The irradiated dose applied to a thoracic vertebra was associated with its fracture. Meaning Decreasing irradiated doses to the thoracic vertebrae may reduce the incidence of vertebral fractures in patients with esophageal cancer after chemoradiotherapy., Importance The association of chemoradiotherapy (CRT) with a thoracic vertebral fracture in patients with esophageal cancer is unknown. Objective To determine whether CRT is associated with thoracic vertebral fractures in patients with esophageal cancer. Design, Setting, and Participants This retrospective cohort study included patients with clinical stages I to III thoracic esophageal cancer who visited the Kyoto University Hospital, Kyoto, Japan, from January 1, 2007, to December 31, 2013. Data were analyzed from April 6, 2018, to June 4, 2020. Exposures Chemoradiotherapy (CRT group) or surgery or endoscopic treatment (non-CRT group). Main Outcomes and Measures The main outcome of this study was the cumulative incidence rate of thoracic vertebral fractures in 36 months. The incidence rate was calculated taking censoring into account. Possible risk factors, including CRT, were explored in the multivariable analysis. The association of irradiated doses with fractured vertebrae was also evaluated. Results A total of 315 patients (119 for the CRT group and 196 for the non-CRT group) were included. The median age of patients was 65 (range, 32-85) years. Fifty-six patients (17.8%) were female and 259 (82.2%) were male. The median observation time was 40.4 (range, 0.7-124.1) months. Thoracic vertebral fractures were observed in 20 patients (16.8%) in the CRT group and 8 patients (4.1%) in the non-CRT group. The 36-month incidence rate of thoracic vertebral fractures was 12.3% (95% CI, 7.0%-19.1%) in the CRT group and 3.5% (95% CI, 1.3%-7.5%) in the non-CRT group (hazard ratio [HR], 3.41 [95% CI, 1.50-7.73]; P = .003). The multivariable analysis showed that the HR of the thoracic vertebral fracture in the CRT group to non-CRT group was 3.91 (95% CI, 1.66-9.23; P = .002) with adjusting for sex, 3.14 (95% CI, 1.37-7.19; P = .007) with adjusting for age, and 3.10 (95% CI, 1.33-7.24; P = .009) with adjusting for the history of vertebral or hip fractures. The HR of the thoracic vertebral fracture for a 5-Gy increase in the mean radiation dose to the single vertebra was 1.19 (95% CI, 1.04-1.36; P = .009). Conclusions and Relevance This study found that chemoradiotherapy was associated with thoracic vertebral fractures in patients with esophageal cancers. A reduced radiation dose to thoracic vertebrae may decrease the incidence of fractures.

Abstract

Purpose To present results of HYBRID study, whether second generation hydrogel coils (HGC) for the treatment of intracranial aneurysms improves outcomes compared with bare platinum coils. Material and Methods HYBRID study is investigator-initiated, prospective, randomized, multicenter trial with open label treatment, blinded endpoint evaluation in Japan (NCT01516658). Inclusion criteria are 20–80 age, 7–20 mm size, unruptured or ruptured with WFNS grade I-III. For hydrogel coil arm (H group), recommended to use HGC 50% length or more with maximum effort and for bare platinum coil arm (B group) prohibited to use any HGC and surface modificated coil. Primary endpoint is recanalization, evaluated on DSA at 1-year after embolization, and late aneurysm rupture, re-treatment and adverse events are secondary endpoints. Results 431 cases enrolled in 44 centers in Japan since March 2012 to March 2016, and completed last follow-up on March 2017. Background data, age, gender, aneurysm size, dome/neck ratio, VER were not significant different in both arms, and mean and median length% of used HGC was 68.6 and 69.9 in H Group and 1.2 and 0 in B Group. Primary endpoint in H group (3.3%, 7/214) couldn’t show significant difference (p=0.083) with that in B group (7.1%, 15/211). However, evaluation by same definition with previously published report, showed major recanalization at 1 year after procedure in H group (2.3%, 5/214) was significantly lower (p=0.039) than B group (6.6%, 14/211). And also, adverse event in H group is significantly lower than that in B group and no aneurysm rupture in both groups. Conclusion Second generation hydrogel coils decreases adverse outcomes including recanalization and unfavorable clinical events in endovascular treatment for intracranial aneurysms. Disclosures N. 29. Demonstration of 11-directional muography in Omuro-yama Scoria cone, Izu, Japan

Abstract

Muography is the method of determining inner bulk density structures of volcano by using cosmic-ray muons. When we get muography image from one direction, there is no spatial resolution along muon path. However, by observing from multiple directions, three-dimensional density structure can be obtained. In recent years, three-dimensional density reconstruction using two or three muographic images has been performed (Tanaka et al., 2010, Rosas-Carbajal et al., 2017), but they obtained three-dimensional density structure with only several hundreds of meters spatial resolution due to lack of information. To improve the spatial resolution, we suggested “omni-directional muography”, putting ten or more observation points to surround the volcano (Nagahara and Miyamoto, 2018), and we estimated its feasibility by simulation. On the other hand, in recent years, detectors for muography have become larger (Morishima et al., 2018, Olah et al., 2019), and a detector necessary for omni-directional muography can be prepared. Therefore, we demonstrated omni-directional muography in Omuro-yama Scoria cone, Izu, Japan.Omuro-yama is a scoria cone formed by a single eruption. The mountain baseline diameter is about 1 kilometer and the height from base is 300 meters. The eruption has been investigated by sediment surveys (Koyano et al.,1996). This mountain has many advantages that are suitable for omnidirectional muography. 1) no mountains around Omuroyama, so no contamination of muon path except in the Omuroyama body. 2) easy to access the detector sites, 3) enough statistics of penetrating muons because of size. We started observing Omuro-yama in 2018. In 2018, we observed for two months from three directions using a 0.01 square meter emulsion detector. In 2019, we performed a three-month observation from eight directions using a 0.02 square meter emulsion detector. As a result of preliminary three-dimensional density reconstruction using the analysis method of Nishiyama et al. (2014), a region with a low density over 200 m in diameter was found under the crater. Currently, we are considering this result carefully. We plan to observe from 30 directions by 2021, including 11 points.In this presentation, we report the latest analysis results of observation results from 11 directions and future plan.

Abstract

The former is applicable even when the number of observation points is small, but requires many arbitrary parameters, while the latter has the characteristic that no arbitrary parameters are required but a certain number of observation points is required.In this presentation, we show the results of a comparison between the two methods in simulation.

Abstract

In this chapter, we provide an historical and demographic overview of Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders in the USA, their exposure to oppression and prejudice, and their most prevalent behavioral health problems compared to other ethnic groups. We review the psychosocial perspectives offered to explain the role of oppression, stigmatization, and prejudices in their behavioral health problems and highlight their resiliency and protective family factors. We also provide a review of the extant literature examining the effects of historical trauma, oppression, and discrimination on a range of behavioral health problems among Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders to include depression, psychological distress, physiological stress indices, general mental health, suicidality, and substance use. A conceptual model of the pathways from oppression and discrimination to behavioral health problems is offered. Finally, we discuss culturally responsive approaches to providing behavioral health services to Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders that focus on issues related to prejudice, stigma, and oppression.

Abstract

Background. Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders have high rates of overweight and obesity compared with other ethnic groups in Hawai‘i. Effective weight loss and weight loss–maintenance programs are needed to address obesity and obesity-related health inequities for this group. Aims. Compare the effectiveness of a 9-month, worksite-based, weight loss–maintenance intervention delivered via DVD versus face-to-face in continued weight reduction and weight loss maintenance beyond the initial weight loss phase. Method. We tested DVD versus face-to-face delivery of the PILI@Work Program’s 9-month, weight loss–maintenance phase in Native Hawaiian–serving organizations. After completing the 3-month weight loss phase, participants ( n = 217) were randomized to receive the weight loss–maintenance phase delivered via trained peer facilitators or DVDs. Participant assessments at randomization and postintervention included weight, height, blood pressure, physical functioning, exercise frequency, and fat intake. Results. Eighty-three face-to-face participants were retained at 12 months (74.1%) compared with 73 DVD participants (69.5%). There was no significant difference between groups in weight loss or weight loss maintenance. The number of lessons attended in Phase 1 of the intervention (β = 0.358, p = .022) and baseline systolic blood pressure (β = −0.038, p = .048) predicted percent weight loss at 12 months. Discussion and Conclusion. Weight loss maintenance was similar across groups. This suggests that low-cost delivery methods for worksite-based interventions targeting at-risk populations can help address obesity and obesity-related disparities. Additionally, attendance during the weight loss phase and lower baseline systolic blood pressure predicted greater percent weight loss during the weight loss–maintenance phase, suggesting that early engagement and initial physical functioning improve long-term weight loss outcomes.

The included talks revolve around the idea of a 'second major turn in biosemiotics' following the more 'Peircean inspired biology' turn of the last few decades of the 20th century, and reconciling its findings with other theoretical foundations of general semiotics, such as structural semiology. Abstract

Nivolumab shows promising efficacy against metastatic melanoma. However, immune-related adverse events are of great concern. We herein report a case of persistent colitis that developed during nivolumab monotherapy and nivolumab readministration. An 82-year-old Japanese woman with recurrent melanoma developed Grade 3 colitis after 6 cycles of nivolumab. She was treated with corticosteroid for 28 days. Follow-up by computed tomography and colonoscopy after corticosteroid treatment revealed persistent pancolitis. Her symptoms ameliorated spontaneously in two months. Given the amelioration, nivolumab was restarted and resulted in the maintenance of stable disease for 21 months without recurrence of colitis. Even in cases of persistent colitis over several months, nivolumab readministration should be considered.

Abstract

99m Tc with a 6 hour half-life is one of the most important medical isotopes used for the Single-Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) inspection in hospitals of US, Canada, Europe and Japan. 99m Tc isotopes are extracted by the milking method from parent 99Mo isotopes with a 66 hour half-life. The supply of 99Mo isotopes now encounters a serious crisis. Hospitals may not suitably receive 99Mo medical isotopes in near future, due to difficulties in production by research nuclear reactors. Many countries are now looking for alternative ways to generate 99Mo isotopes other than those with research reactors. We discuss a sustained availability of 99m Tc isotopes via the nat Mo(γ, n) photonuclear reaction, and discuss to solve technical problems for extracting pure 99m Tc isotopes from other output materials of photonuclear reactions.

Photoneutron cross sections were measured for $^{137}$Ba and $^{138}$Ba at energies below two-neutron threshold using quasi-monochromatic $\gamma$-ray beams produced in laser Compton-scattering at the NewSUBARU synchrotron radiation facility. The photoneutron data are used to constrain the $\gamma$-ray strength function on the basis of the Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov plus quasi-particle random phase approximation using the Gogny D1M interaction. Abstract

We successfully synthesized the verdazyl-based salts ${(m\ensuremath{-}\mathrm{MePy}\ensuremath{-}\mathrm{V})}_{2}{\mathrm{Fe}}_{2}{\mathrm{OCl}}_{6}$ and ${[m\ensuremath{-}\mathrm{MePy}\ensuremath{-}\mathrm{V}\ensuremath{-}{(p\ensuremath{-}\mathrm{Cl})}_{2}]}_{2}{\mathrm{Fe}}_{2}{\mathrm{OCl}}_{6}\ifmmode\cdot\else\textperiodcentered\fi{}{({\mathrm{CH}}_{3}\mathrm{CN})}_{2}$ with different ${\mathrm{Fe}}_{2}{\mathrm{OCl}}_{6}^{2\ensuremath{-}}$ structures. The exchange interactions between ${\mathrm{Fe}}^{3+}$ ions in the ${\mathrm{Fe}}_{2}{\mathrm{OCl}}_{6}^{2\ensuremath{-}}$ anions were evaluated to be nearly equivalent and to form an $S=5/2$ antiferromagnetic (AF) dimer in each salt. We obtained the magnetic susceptibility of $S=1/2$ spins on the radical by subtracting the contribution of $S=5/2$ spins in the anion from the observed magnetic susceptibility. For (${m\ensuremath{-}\mathrm{MePy}\ensuremath{-}\mathrm{V})}_{2}{\mathrm{Fe}}_{2}{\mathrm{OCl}}_{6}$, ab initio molecular orbital (MO) calculations indicated that the $S=1/2$ AF dimers are weakly connected by ferromagnetic interactions, thereby forming a honeycomb lattice. The experimentally measured magnetic susceptibility and specific heat indicate a corresponding nonmagnetic gapped behavior. For $[m\ensuremath{-}\mathrm{MePy}\ensuremath{-}\mathrm{V}\ensuremath{-}{(p\ensuremath{-}\mathrm{Cl})}_{2}{]}_{2}{\mathrm{Fe}}_{2}{\mathrm{OCl}}_{6}\ifmmode\cdot\else\textperiodcentered\fi{}{({\mathrm{CH}}_{3}\mathrm{CN})}_{2}$, MO calculations indicated that four types of dominant interactions form an unconventional $S=1/2$ honeycomb-based 3D spin model. The magnetic susceptibility and specific heat indicate a phase transition to a 3D order at approximately 4.8 K.

Abstract

We present a model compound for the $S=1/2$ ferromagnetic Heisenberg chain composed of the verdazyl-based complex $[\mathrm{Zn}{(\mathrm{hfac})}_{2}][4\ensuremath{-}\mathrm{Cl}\ensuremath{-}o\ensuremath{-}\mathrm{Py}\ensuremath{-}\mathrm{V}\ensuremath{-}{(4\ensuremath{-}\mathrm{F})}_{2}]$. $Ab\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}initio$ MO calculations indicate a predominant ferromagnetic interaction forming an $S=1/2$ ferromagnetic chain. The magnetic susceptibility and specific heat indicate a phase transition to an antiferromagnetic (AF) order due to the finite interchain couplings. We explain the magnetic susceptibility and magnetization curve above the phase-transition temperature based on the $S=1/2$ ferromagnetic Heisenberg chain. The magnetization curve in the ordered phase is described by a conventional AF two-sublattice model. Furthermore, the obtained magnetic specific heat reproduces the almost temperature-independent behavior of the $S=1/2$ ferromagnetic Heisenberg chain. In the low-temperature region, the magnetic specific heat exhibits a $\sqrt{T}$ dependence, which is attributed to the energy dispersion in the ferromagnetic chain.

Photoneutron cross sections were measured for $^{203}\mathrm{Tl}$ and $^{205}\mathrm{Tl}$ at energies between the one- and two-neutron thresholds using quasimonochromatic $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray beams produced in laser Compton scattering at the NewSUBARU synchrotron radiation facility. Our measurement results in cross sections significantly different from the previously reported bremsstrahlung experiment, leading to rather different giant dipole resonance (GDR) parameters, in particular to lower GDR peak energies and higher peak cross sections. The photoneutron data are used to constrain the $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray strength function on the basis of the Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov plus quasiparticle random-phase approximation using the Gogny D1M interaction. Supplementing the experimentally constrained $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray strength function with the zero-limit $E1$ and $M1$ contributions for the de-excitation mode, we estimate the Maxwellian-averaged cross section for the s-process branching-point nucleus $^{204}\mathrm{Tl}$ in the context of the $^{205}\mathrm{Pb}\ensuremath{-}^{205}\mathrm{Tl}$ chronometry.

Abstract

Harmful animal controls on spotted seals on Rebun Island have been conducted each spring since 2010 due to an increase in the number of seals and damage to local fisheries. To evaluate the influences of controls on seals, we used the numbers of haul-out sites and hauled-out seals, and photo-identification to study differences in the usage patterns of haul-out sites by seals before and after controls. As a result, two major changes were confirmed. Firstly, in spring after controls, the numbers of hauled-out seals at Northern Rebun (NR) greatly decreased, while at Bensashi (Ben) on the southern side of Rebun they greatly increased, compared to spring prior to controls. Secondly, the number of identified seals observed at both NR and Ben (NR-Ben) increased after controls, while most of the seals that changed to NR-Ben after controls were observed only at NR (NR-NR) before controls. Additionally, most of the seals using NR-Ben were observed year-round. The controls had a direct influence on reducing the numbers of seals in the controls area mainly during the period of controls. However, many seals that avoided the controls area used other haul-out sites, and the numbers of year-round-seals on Rebun increased after controls.

Abstract

A previously translated Diabetes Prevention Program Lifestyle Intervention (DPP-LI) was adapted for delivery as a worksite-based intervention, called PILI@Work, to address obesity disparities in Native Hawaiians/Pacific Islanders. This study examined the effectiveness of PILI@Work and factors associated with weight loss at post-intervention. Overweight/obese employees of 15 Native Hawaiian-serving organizations received the 3-month component of PILI@Work. Assessments included weight, systolic/diastolic blood pressure, physical activity and functioning, fat intake, locus of weight control, social support, and self-efficacy. Weight, systolic/diastolic blood pressure, physical functioning, physical activity frequency, fat intake, family support, and eating self-efficacy improved from pre- to post-intervention. Regression analysis indicated that worksite type, decreased diastolic blood pressure, increased physical activity, and more internalized locus of weight control were significantly associated with 3-month weight loss. PILI@Work initiated weight loss in Native Hawaiians/Pacific Islanders. DPP-LI translated to worksite settings and tailored for specific populations can be effective for addressing obesity.

Abstract

An incidental discovery of an accumulation of 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) in the oral cavity of patients with malignant tumours on FDG positron emission tomography (PET) can pose a problem regarding the differential diagnosis of metastatic lesions. Large accumulations can often be found even when tumours in the salivary or thyroid gland are benign, so FDG-PET is limited in its ability to differentiate between benign and malignant disease. This report describes a rare case of sialadenoma papilliferum in the buccal mucosa that was discovered incidentally on FDG-PET in a patient with multiple metastases to bone after an operation for rectal cancer.
