- Abstract
Using authentic materials in the classroom is increasingly popular because it is considered more fun and exciting for students. It can support and facilitate the teaching and learning process because authentic materials boost the teaching strategies and promote learners active language production. The research aims to discover the perceptions of English teachers and students towards authentic reading materials usage in schools. The study was conducted at Pamekasan SMPN 1 Kadur SMPN 6 Pamekasan and SMPN 2 Pamekasan. A research survey consisting of seven steps (1) Questionnaire Development and Validation (2) Small Scale Try-Out (3) Questionnaire Distribution (4) Data Analysis (5) Interview (6) Result Description and (7) Conclusion. The findings revealed that authentic reading materials in the ninth grade had various advantages the material taught is easy to understand up-to- date relevant to everyday life increases the student rsquo s motivation and mastering vocabulary. Meanwhile there were various disadvantages students sometimes still feel lazy when they have to read the text given students need more time to understand the text it is difficult to find authentic material for students and students hope that the teacher will quickly leave the class. When these deficiencies are found the teacher will do several ways to solve the existing problems so the teaching and learning process is better.
