Astronomy ,Exobiology - Abstract
NASA’S Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification and Security-Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS-REx) spacecraft recently arrived at the near-Earth asteroid (101955) Bennu, a primitive body that represents the objects that may have brought prebiotic molecules and volatiles such as water to Earth1. Bennu is a low-albedo B-type asteroid2 that has been linked to organic-rich hydrated carbonaceous chondrites3. Such meteorites are altered by ejection from their parent body and contaminated by atmospheric entry and terrestrial microbes. Therefore, the primary mission objective is to return a sample of Bennu to Earth that is pristine—that is, not affected by these processes4. The OSIRIS-REx spacecraft carries a sophisticated suite of instruments to characterize Bennu’s global properties, support the selection of a sampling site and document that site at a sub-centimetre scale5,6,7,8,9,10,11. Here we consider early OSIRIS-REx observations of Bennu to understand how the asteroid’s properties compare to pre-encounter expectations and to assess the prospects for sample return. The bulk composition of Bennu appears to be hydrated and volatile-rich, as expected. However, in contrast to pre-encounter modelling of Bennu’s thermal inertia12 and radar polarization ratios13—which indicated a generally smooth surface covered by centimetre-scale particles—resolved imaging reveals an unexpected surficial diversity. The albedo, texture, particle size and roughness are beyond the spacecraft design specifications. On the basis of our pre-encounter knowledge, we developed a sampling strategy to target 50-metre-diameter patches of loose regolith with grain sizes smaller than two centimetres4. We observe only a small number of apparently hazard-free regions, of the order of 5 to 20 metres in extent, the sampling of which poses a substantial challenge to mission success.

Geosciences (General) - Abstract
During its approach to asteroid (101955) Bennu, NASA’s Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security-Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS-REx) spacecraft surveyed Bennu’s immediate environment, photometric properties, and rotation state. Discovery of a dusty environment, a natural satellite, or unexpected asteroid characteristics would have had consequences for the mission’s safety and observation strategy. Here we show that spacecraft observations during this period were highly sensitive to satellites (sub-meter scale) but reveal none, although later navigational images indicate that further investigation is needed. We constrain average dust production in September 2018 from Bennu’s surface to an upper limit of 150 g/s averaged over 34 min. Bennu’s disk-integrated photometric phase function validates measurements from the pre-encounter astronomical campaign. We demonstrate that Bennu’s rotation rate is accelerating continuously at 3.63 ± 0.52 × 10^(–6) degrees/sq. day, likely due to the Yarkovsky–O’Keefe–Radzievskii–Paddack (YORP) effect, with evolutionary implications.

- Abstract
We built a collector to filter interplanetary dust particles (IDPs) larger than 5 µm from the clean air at the Amundsen Scott South Pole station. Our sampling strategy used long duration, continuous dry filtering of near-surface air in place of short duration, high-speed impact collection on flags flown in the stratosphere. We filtered ~107 m³ of clean Antarctic air through 20 cm diameter, 3 µm filters coupled to a suction blower of modest power consumption (5–6 kW). Our collector ran continuously for 2 years and yielded 41 filters for analyses. Based on stratospheric concentrations, we predicted that each month’s collection would provide 300–900 IDPs for analysis. We identified 19 extraterrestrial (ET) particles on the 66 cm² of filter examined, which represented ~0.5% of the exposed filter surfaces. The 11 ET particles larger than 5 µm yield about a fifth of the expected flux based on >5 µm stratospheric ET particle flux. Of the 19 ET particles identified, four were chondritic porous IDPs, seven were FeNiS beads, two were FeNi grains, and six were chondritic material with FeNiS components. Most were

© 2015 Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht With the increasing use of coronary artery calcium (CAC) scoring to risk stratify asymptomatic patients for future cardiovascular events, there have been concerns raised regarding the theoretical risk of radiation exposure to this potentially large patient population. Newer CT protocols have sought to reduce radiation exposure without compromising image quality, but the reported radiation exposures in the literature remains widely variable (0.7–10.5 mSv). In this study, we report the radiation exposure of calcium scoring from our MESA cohort across several modern CT scanners with the aim of clarifying the radiation exposure of this imaging modality. To evaluate the mean effective doses of radiation, using dose length product, utilized for coronary artery calcium scoring in the MESA cohort, in an effort to understand estimated population quantity effective dose using individual measurements of scanner radiation output using current CT scanners. We reviewed effective dose in milliSieverts (mSv) for 3442 participants from the MESA cohort undergoing coronary artery calcium scoring, divided over six sites with four different modern CT scanners (Siemens64, Siemens Somatom Definition, GE64, and Toshiba 320). For effective dose calculation (milliSieverts, mSv), we multiplied the dose length product by conversion factor k (0.014). The mean effective dose amongst all participants was 1.05 mSv, a median dose of 0.95 mSV. The mean effective dose ranged from 0.74 to 1.26 across the six centers involved with the MESA cohort. The Siemens Somatom Definition scanner had effective dose of 0.53 (n = 123), Siemens 64 with 0.97 (n = 1684), GE 64 with 1.16 (n = 1219), and Toshiba 320 with 1.26 mSv (n = 416). Subgroup analysis by BMI, age, and gender showed no variability between scanners, gender, ages 45–74 years old, or BMI less than 30 kg/m2. Subjects over age 75 yo had a mean effective dose of 1.29 ± 0.31 mSv, while the 40 kg/m2 was significantly greater than other subgroups, with mean dose of 1.47 ± 0.51 mSv (p < 0.01). Using contemporary CT scanners and protocols, the effective dose for coronary artery calcium is approximately 1 mSv, an estimate which is consistently lower than previously reported for CAC scanning, regardless of age, gender, and body mass index.

The Muller F element (4.2 Mb, ~80 protein-coding genes) is an unusual autosome of Drosophila melanogaster; it is mostly heterochromatic with a low recombination rate. To investigate how these properties impact the evolution of repeats and genes, we manually improved the sequence and annotated the genes on the D. erecta, D. mojavensis, and D. grimshawi F elements and euchromatic domains from the Muller D element. We find that F elements have greater transposon density (25–50%) than euchromatic reference regions (3–11%). Among the F elements, D. grimshawi has the lowest transposon density (particularly DINE-1: 2% vs. 11–27%). F element genes have larger coding spans, more coding exons, larger introns, and lower codon bias. Comparison of the Effective Number of Codons with the Codon Adaptation Index shows that, in contrast to the other species, codon bias in D. grimshawi F element genes can be attributed primarily to selection instead of mutational biases, suggesting that density and types of transposons affect the degree of local heterochromatin formation. F element genes have lower estimated DNA melting temperatures than D element genes, potentially facilitating transcription through heterochromatin. Most F element genes (~90%) have remained on that element, but the F element has smaller syntenic blocks than genome averages (3.4–3.6 vs. 8.4–8.8 genes per block), indicating greater rates of inversion despite lower rates of recombination. Overall, the F element has maintained characteristics that are distinct from other autosomes in the Drosophila lineage, illuminating the constraints imposed by a heterochromatic milieu.

Meteorites and interplanetary dust particles (IDPs) are primitive solar system materials which contain preserved nebular condensates, circumstellar dust grains and partially preserved molecular cloud matter. The circumstellar dust grains found in meteorites are direct samples of a variety of stars, and provide detailed constraints on models of stellar nucleosynthesis. Hydrogen and nitrogen isotopic anomalies in organic matter in meteorites and IDPs are thought to originate from chemical processes in a presolar molecular cloud. This material is better preserved, but less well characterized among IDPs.

Nine surface soil acidification treatments were tested to determine which were effective in preventing the development of chlorosis in white oak seedlings. The treatments were applied with and without subsurface sulfuric acid to white oak seedlings purposely planted in calcareous soil. Nutrient imbalances as compared to healthy seedlings consisted of low foliar nitrogen, phosphorus, zinc, iron, and copper for uniformly chlorotic seedlings. Interveinally chlorotic seedlings exhibited low nitrogen and iron and high potassium. Miracid, Hi‐Acid, and ammonium sulfate surface treatments were highly effective in preventing chlorosis provided that subsurface treatment was omitted. Except when applied with H2SO4, A12SO4, and granular sulfur surface treatments, subsurface H2SO4 had an adverse effect on treatment success.

Three indigenous Costa Rican tree species, Bursera simarouba, Gliricidia sepium, and Spondias purpurea, were grown from stem cuttings in an upland stony soil, an upland non-stony soil and a lowland non-stony soil. Cuttings were planted immediately before the rainy season. Sprouting of all three species on all three soils began within three weeks. Gliricidiacuttings were superior to the others in terms of survival, leaf retention, shoot, and root growth regardless of soil type. The upland clayey soil was least favorable for Gliricidiabut was the only soil in which Burseracuttings survived well. Nine months after plantation establishment, roots were more abundant in the upland stony soil, which is discussed in terms of its favorable properties.

Nine soil surface treatments and one planting‐hole treatment were tested for their effectiveness in stimulating growth and preventing chlorosis of pin oak (Quercus palustris) seedlings planted in calcareous soil. Planting‐hole acidification was highly effective, especially in combination with a surface treatment of either sulfuric acid or aluminum sulfate. Ammonium sulfate lowered soil pH but was detrimental to the seedlings. Nutrient concentrations in uniformly chlorotic leaves were different from those in interveinally chlorotic leaves, but both types were characterized by low zinc.

For the 2003 and 2004 SAE Clean Snowmobile Challenges, the successful implementation of a clean, quiet, high-performance four-stroke motorcycle engine into an existing snowmobile chassis was achieved. For the 2005 Challenge, a new motor and chassis were selected to continue the development of a four cylinder, four stroke powered snowmobile. The snowmobile is as powerful as today’s production performance models, as nimble as production touring sleds, easy to start, and environmentally friendly. This report describes the conversion process in detail with actual dynamometer, emissions, noise, and field test data, and also provides analysis of the development processes and data. The vehicle meets the proposed 2012 EPA snowmobile emissions regulations and is significantly quieter than a stock snowmobile.

The successful implementation of a clean, quiet, high-performance four-stroke motorcycle engine into an existing snowmobile chassis has been achieved. The snowmobile is easy to start, easy to drive, and environmentally friendly. The following paper describes the conversion process in detail with actual dynamometer and field test data. The vehicle meets the proposed 2010 EPA snowmobile emissions regulations and is quieter than a stock snowmobile. The snowmobile not only addresses environmental concerns, it is economical as well, with an approximate cost of $5874.
