An easy-to-use and robust energy monitoring device has been developed for reliable detection of day-to-day small variations in the electron beam energy, a critical parameter for quality control and quality assurance in industrial radiation processing. It has potential for using on-line, thus providing real-time information. Its working principle is based on the measurement of currents, or charges, collected by two aluminium absorbers of specific thicknesses (dependent on the beam energy), insulated from each other and positioned within a faraday cup-style aluminium cage connected to the ground. The device has been extensively tested in the energy range of 4–12 MeV under standard laboratory conditions at Institute of Isotopes and CNR-ISOF using different types of electron accelerators; namely, a TESLA LPR-4 LINAC (3–6 MeV) and a L-band Vickers LINAC (7–12 MeV), respectively. This device has been also tested in high power electron beam radiation processing facilities, one equipped with a 7-MeV LUE-8 linear accelerator used for crosslinking of cables and medical device sterilization, and the other equipped with a 10 MeV Rhodotron TT100 recirculating accelerator used for in-house sterilization of medical devices. In the present work, we have extended the application of this method to still lower energy region, i.e. from 1.5 to 2.4 MeV. Also, we show that such a device is capable of detecting deviation in the beam energy as small as 40 keV.

This paper presents the beam test results of the first four double-sided silicon strip modules built for the inner tracker of ALICE detector. The basic detector performance was studied with the focus made on the efficiency and spatial resolution determination. A fast method for the determination of the spatial resolution of the sensors in the telescope is described.

The ALICE experiment, which is being installed at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, is designed to operate in a high-track density environment which is typical of relativistic heavy ions physics. This paper reports the main characteristics of the Inner Tracking System (ITS) of ALICE and describes the Silicon Strip Detector, which forms the two outermost layers of the ITS.

The two outermost layers of the ALICE Inner Tracking System consist of 1698 double-sided silicon microstrip modules, which form the Silicon Strip Detector (SSD). The SSD modules offer several novelties, which include the use of TAB-bonding technique for the connection of the front-end electronic via thin aluminium-polyimide cables. The module as well as its parts will be described and the assembling procedure illustrated.

The Silicon Strip Detector (SSD) forms the two outermost layers of the Inner Tracking System (ITS) of ALICE. The SSD detector consists of 1698 double-sided silicon microstrip modules. The electrical connection between silicon sensor and front-end electronics is made via TAB-bonded aluminium polyimide cables (chip-cables). The module assembly is challenging because of the module geometry and the use of chip-cables. This article describes the assembly procedure and the test protocol used.

Results of the characterization studies on a power bipolar transistor investigated as a possible radiation dosimeter under laboratory condition using electron beams of energies from 2.2 to 8.6 MeV and gamma rays from a Co-60 source and tested in industrial irradiation plants having high-activity Co-60 gamma-source and high-energy, high-power electron beam have previously been reported. The present paper describes recent studies performed on this type of bipolar transistor irradiated with 1.9 and 2.2 MeV electron beams in the dose range 5-50 kGy. Dose response, post-irradiation heat treatment and stability, effects of temperature during irradiation in the range from -104 to +22 degrees C, dependence on temperature during reading in the range 20-50 degrees C, and the difference in response of the transistors irradiated from the plastic side and the copper side are reported. DLTS measurements performed on the irradiated devices to identify the recombination centres introduced by radiation and their dependence on dose and energy of the electron beam are also reported.

Raman distributed temperature sensing (DTS) technologies are currently under evaluation by the nuclear and hydraulic industries as it may bring promising alternatives to classical measurement techniques. The reliability of the DTS measurements, as well as the traceability to the temperature standards, must be ensured throughout the entire period of monitoring (typically over a few tens of years). In order to achieve this goal, one key task consists in the verification of the performances claimed by the DTS devices manufacturers. Thus, the metrological performances and characteristics of the DTS devices, such as their limitations and accuracies, as well as the practical aspects of systems implemented on site should be evaluated step by step. This paper describes the dedicated facilities which have been developed at LNE in order to evaluate and to qualify DTS devices for very demanding applications. A first case study performed on one specific DTS device is detailed. A systematic bias has been observed among others on the spatial resolution. The DTS response to a temperature variation step over 1 m (spatial resolution typically claimed by the manufacturers) of sensing optical fibre corresponds indeed to only 90% of the temperature step magnitude, whereas the full DTS response is obtained in fact for 10 m (the practical spatial resolution) of sensing optical fibre solicited by this temperature step variation. - Abstract
Decommissioning of nuclear facilities incurs high costs regarding the accurate characterisation and correct disposal of the decommissioned materials. Therefore, there is a need for the implementation of new and traceable measurement technologies to select the appropriate release or disposal route of radioactive wastes. This paper addresses some of the innovative outcomes of the project "Metrology for Decommissioning Nuclear Facilities" related to mapping of contamination inside nuclear facilities, waste clearance measurement, Raman distributed temperature sensing for long term repository integrity monitoring and validation of radiochemical procedures., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Ltd. 14. Development of an air flow calorimeter prototype for the measurement of thermal power released by large radioactive waste packages.

- Abstract
The estimation and control of the thermal power released by the radioactive waste packages are a key parameter in the management of radioactive waste geological repository sites. In the framework of the European project "Metrology for decommissioning nuclear facilities," the French National Agency of Radioactive Waste Management (ANDRA) collaborates with Laboratoire National de Métrologie et D'essais in order to measure the thermal power up to 500 W of typical real size radioactive waste packages (of at least 0.175 m
3 ) with an uncertainty better than 5% by using a measurement method traceable to the international system of units. One of the selected metrological approaches is based on the principles of air flow calorimetry. This paper describes in detail the development of the air flow calorimeter prototype as well as the design of a radioactive waste package simulator used for its calibration. Results obtained from the calibration of the calorimeter and from the determination of thermal powers are presented here with an investigation of the measurement uncertainties.- Published
