This paper investigates spatiotemporal correlates of empathic concern for nature using the EEG/ERP method. The assessment of empathic concern for nature is of much utility as it could give us greater insights into conservation behaviors. Research studies investigating the development of empathy in young children inform us about the interplay of affective and cognitive aspects while perceiving other people in distress and its relationship with prosocial behaviors. However, it is not clear how the brain responds while perceiving nature in distress. Nor are the developmental dynamics of empathic concern for nature concretely known. In this study, eighty-three healthy children, 5–12 years (Mean age = 7.65 years and SD = 2.50 years, 35 girls) participated. Analysis of the differences in neural processing when perceiving images of nature in distress and no distress showed a significant main effect of stimulus type. There was a significant difference in the mean amplitudes of early and late ERP components for distress vs no distress, with distress eliciting a pronounced neural response. There were also significant interaction effects of laterality and age with stimulus type. Correlation analysis of differences in early and late components with age suggests shifting dynamics of empathy for nature from affective arousal to cognitive appraisal. In its novel attempt, this study provides neurophysiological support for the development of empathy for nature during childhood.

Pancreatic resection is associated with pancreatic exocrine insufficiency (PEI) leading to nutritional consequences. The Pancreatic Nutrition Clinic was established to diagnose and manage PEI through standardised nutritional assessment. In this prospective observational study, we aimed to define the rate of PEI, diabetes mellitus and nutritional abnormalities in patients who underwent pancreatic resection.All Pancreatic Nutrition Clinic patients were included for analysis. Clinical data were prospectively obtained at initial assessment. Biochemical data included micronutrient levels, faecal elastase-1 and haemoglobin A1c. Bone mineral density and nutritional assessment were undertaken.Ninety-eight patients were included. Fifty-nine per cent (58/98) had undergone a pancreatoduodenectomy. Ninety-three patients had a faecal elastase-1 result, 65% (60/93) of which had a faecal elastase-1 less than 200 μg/g of faeces. Seventy-five patients (76%) of the total population required PERT, and thirty-nine (40%) were classified as malnourished using the patient-generated subjective global assessment tool. Seventy-two per cent (70/97) had a biochemical deficiency of one or more micronutrients. Thirty-eight people (39%) had diabetes mellitus. Of the seventy-eight patients with a bone mineral density scan available for analysis, 29% (23/78) had osteoporosis and 49% (38/78) osteopenia.Pancreatic exocrine insufficiency, micronutrient deficiency, bone disease, diabetes mellitus and malnutrition are highly prevalent in patients who have undergone pancreatic resection.

Background Although oral cancer accounts for 2.1% of all cancer cases globally, it is surfacing as a major public threat in India. Oral cancer figures among three most common types of cancer in the Indian subcontinent, with an incidence rate of 30%. The increased availability and use of smokeless tobacco and betel quid in the recent years have further aggravated the situation. The scarcity of reports on the contribution of such risk factors in oral cancer incidence remains a prime concern. In this perspective, the association between smokeless tobacco and cancer of gingivobuccal sulcus was investigated. Method The medical records of 249 patients with cancer of gingivobuccal sulcus, attending the BRAIRCH, AIIMS, New Delhi, were retrospectively examined from 2009-2016. Demographic and clinical data including history of addictions (smoking, smokeless tobacco) were collected and patients were staged according to the 8thAJCC Cancer Staging (2017). Results Smokeless forms of tobacco were more prevalent among the patients (50.7%), in contrast to smoked tobacco (19.53%), while 29.77% were reported to consume both forms. A higher proportion of patients with smokeless tobacco addiction were diagnosed with advanced stages of cancer (56.9% in Stage III/IV). These rates were even higher (65.6%) in patients using both smokeless and smoked tobacco. Conclusions A strong association was observed between smokeless tobacco and gingivobuccal sulcus cancer, particularly in patients who kept the tobacco in the buccal vestibule after chewing, to suck, sometimesovernight. Elucidating the potential risk factors can be a key approach to design effective intervention programs to combat the growing pandemic of oral cancer in India.

19. Does Advertising Serve as a Signal? Evidence from a Field Experiment in Mobile Search

We develop a field experiment that assesses whether advertising can serve as a signal that enhances consumers’ evaluations of advertised goods. We implement the experiment on a mobile search platform that provides listings and reviews for an archetypal experience good, restaurants. In collaboration with the platform, we randomize about 200,000 users in 13 Asian cities into exposure of ads for about 600+ local restaurants. Within the exposure group, we randomly vary the disclosure to the consumer of whether a restaurant’s listing is a paid-ad. This enables isolating the effect on outcomes of a user knowing that a listing is sponsored—a pure signalling effect. We find that this disclosure increases calls to the restaurant by 77%, holding fixed all other attributes of the ad. The disclosure effect is higher when the consumer uses the platform away from his typical city of search, when the uncertainty about restaurant quality is larger, and for restaurants that have received fewer ratings in the past. On the supply side, newer, higher rated and more popular restaurants are found to advertise more on the platform; and ratings of those that advertised during the experiment are found to be higher two years later. Taken together, we interpret these results as consistent with a signalling equilibrium in which ads serve as implicit signals that enhance the appeal of the advertised restaurants to consumers. Both consumers and advertisers seem to benefit from the signalling. Consumers shift choices towards restaurants that are better rated (at baseline) in the disclosure group compared to the no disclosure group, and advertisers gain from the improved outcomes induced by disclosure.

A 2-year-old girl, complaining of a gradual increase in the restriction of the mouth opening for 3 months, was referred to the Otolaryngologists based on background history of recurrent oral ulcers. The local examination showed the presence of oral ulcers on the cheek in addition to abnormal oral mucosa which appeared blanched, opaque and fibrotic. This was clinically diagnosed as Oral Submucous Fibrosis, owing to classical presentation and the lack of systemic features. A detailed social and family history revealed that the father of the child used to smoke BIDI, a traditional form of nonfiltered cigarette. The child used to play with the burnt stubs and keep them in her mouth, chewing them for long durations. This was assumed to be the aetiological factor behind the development of the pathology, in absence of any other contributing factors. The patient was treated conservatively, and symptomatic improvement was noted on follow-up. This is the youngest reported patient with OSMF, and this case history brought an unusual aetiological factor to the fore.

Search engines and e-commerce platforms have substantial difficulty exposing new products to their users on account of an information problem: new products typically do not have enough sales or other user-engagement that enables platforms to reliably assess product quality. This paper evaluates the role of advertising in providing information to the platform regarding new product quality so as to solve this "cold-start" problem and engineer higher quality organic listings. If sellers' advertising decisions predict the quality of new products, incorporating the advertising propensity of sellers into the search ranking algorithm can help obtain higher quality listings. Using a large-scale experiment implemented at JD.com---a large e-commerce platform in China---we show that using ad propensity information for ranking new products benefits both the platform and consumers, in the short run. Our findings showcase a new channel by which advertising can potentially improve outcomes for consumers and platforms in e-commerce, through its ability to reveal information that can be used by platforms to improve search ranking algorithms.

In 2008, we published the first set of guidelines for standardizing research in autophagy. Since then, this topic has received increasing attention, and many scientists have entered the field. Our knowledge base and relevant new technologies have also been expanding. Thus, it is important to formulate on a regular basis updated guidelines for monitoring autophagy in different organisms. Despite numerous reviews, there continues to be confusion regarding acceptable methods to evaluate autophagy, especially in multicellular eukaryotes. Here, we present a set of guidelines for investigators to select and interpret methods to examine autophagy and related processes, and for reviewers to provide realistic and reasonable critiques of reports that are focused on these processes. These guidelines are not meant to be a dogmatic set of rules, because the appropriateness of any assay largely depends on the question being asked and the system being used. Moreover, no individual assay is perfect for every situation, calling for the use of multiple techniques to properly monitor autophagy in each experimental setting. Finally, several core components of the autophagy machinery have been implicated in distinct autophagic processes (canonical and noncanonical autophagy), implying that genetic approaches to block autophagy should rely on targeting two or more autophagy-related genes that ideally participate in distinct steps of the pathway. Along similar lines, because multiple proteins involved in autophagy also regulate other cellular pathways including apoptosis, not all of them can be used as a specific marker for bona fide autophagic responses. Here, we critically discuss current methods of assessing autophagy and the information they can, or cannot, provide. Our ultimate goal is to encourage intellectual and technical innovation in the field.

Weaning to noninvasive ventilation in intensive care unit and bridging the patients to home with respiratory support is evolving as the technology of noninvasive ventilation is improving. In patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease exacerbation, timing of initiation of noninvasive ventilation is the key, as persistently hypercapnic patients show benefits. High-intensity pressure support seems to do better in comparison to low-intensity pressure support. In patients with obesity and hypercapnia, obesity hypoventilation cannot be ruled out especially in an inpatient setting, and it is crucial that these patients are discharged with noninvasive ventilation.

In collaboration with three companies selling a diverse set of products, we conducted randomized field experiments in which experimentally tailored email ads were sent to millions of individuals. We found consistently that personalizing the emails by adding consumer-specific information (e.g., recipient’s name) benefited the advertisers. Importantly, such content is not likely to be informative about the advertised product or the company. In our main experiment, we found that adding the name of the message recipient to the email’s subject line increased the probability of the recipient opening it by 20% (from 9.05% to 10.80%), which translated to an increase in sales’ leads by 31% (from 0.39% to 0.51%) and a reduction in the number of individuals unsubscribing from the email campaign by 17% (from 1.2% to 1.0%). We present similar experiments conducted with other companies, which show that the effects we document extend from objectives ranging from acquiring new customers to retaining customers who have purchased from the company in the past. Our investigation of several possible mechanisms suggests that such content increases the effort consumers make in processing the other content in the rest of the advertising message. Our paper quantifies the benefits from personalization and sheds light on the role of noninformative advertising content by analyzing several detailed measures of recipient’s interaction with the message. It provides external validity to psychological mechanisms and has clear implications for the firms that are designing their advertising campaigns. BACKGROUND Micronutrient deficiency is a global health burden, especially among developing countries. The present cross-sectional study aimed to determine the prevalence of vitamin B12 deficiency in healthy Indian school-going adolescents, based on area of residence, sex and body mass index (BMI). Furthermore, the relationship of serum B12 concentration with dietary vitamin B12 intake and anthropometric indices was assessed among adolescents from rural and urban India. We analyze a large-scale randomized field experiment in which a search engine varied the prominence of search ads for 3.3 million US users: one group of users saw the status quo, while the other saw a lower level of advertising (with prominence of search ads decreased). Revealed preference data reject that users are, overall, averse to the experimentally varied search ads which span a diverse set of searches and advertisers. At the margin, users prefer the status quo with the higher level of advertising. On the supply side, newer websites are more likely to advertise. Going from the lower to the higher level of advertising increases traffic to newer websites, with the newest decile of websites gaining traffic by 10%. Users also respond more positively to advertising when local businesses in their state create new websites. Taken together, patterns in our data are consistent with a constructive role of search advertising in which it fills significant information gaps by conveying new information, which is hard for the search engines to gather, and therefore missed by the organic algorithms. Viewing search ads, at the margin we study, makes consumers better off on average.

The author analyzes the impact of online ads on the advertiser's competitors, using data from randomized field experiments on a restaurant-search website. He finds that ads increase the chances of sales for nonadvertised restaurants significantly. The spillover benefits are concentrated on restaurants that serve the advertiser's cuisine and have a high rating on the restaurant-search website. The extent of spillovers also depends on the intensity of the advertising effort. The spillovers are largest when the intensity (frequency) of advertising is low. As the intensity increases, the spillovers disappear and the advertiser gains more sales. These patterns are consistent with the following mechanism: ads increase the chance of consumers buying the advertised product but also remind consumers of similar (nonadvertised) options. Higher ad intensity leads to a stronger direct effect favoring the advertiser and can offset the spillover caused by the broader reminder.

Queries are expressed by farmers related to their crop in natural language, which are usually answered by human experts. Knowledge required to answer such queries can be modeled as ontologies that include agricultural practices, data related to the farm being queried about, recent weather conditions, and other contextual information. Farmers depend on trends followed by other farmers, vendor recommendations, and government advisories, which form a part of the spatiotemporal context. OntoAQ is an ontology-based knowledge system that is designed for answering questions based on a fact database. We have implemented OntoAQ using a cotton crop database and provide a keyword-based query interface to enable farmers to ask specific questions about the problem they face. Questions are filtered using context parameters such as the crop and activities that the farmer is engaged in. Context parameters are inferred from the ontological information. Based on the users’ input, answers are provided using a graph-matching algorithm that locates the set of best matches. Answers are ranked based on relevance of the keywords. We discuss the relevance ontologies of farming practices based on spatial and temporal contexts of each activity and provide recommendations to further improve the system.

This paper aims to understand the impact of temporal spacing between ad exposures on the likelihood of a consumer purchasing the advertised product. I create an individual-level data set with exogenous variation in ad exposure and its spacing by running online field experiments. Using this data set, I first show that (1) ads significantly increase the likelihood of the consumers purchasing from the advertiser and (2) this increase carries over to future purchase occasions. Importantly, I also find evidence for the spacing effect: the likelihood of a product’s purchase increases if it’s ads are spread apart rather than bunched together, even if spreading apart involves shifting some ads away from the purchase occasion. Accounting for the spacing effect is important to detect the effects of repeated advertising. Because the traditional models of advertising do not explain the data patterns, I build a new memory-based model of how advertising influences consumer behavior. Using a nested test, I reject the restrictions imposed by the canonical goodwill stock model (Nerlove and Arrow, Economica, 29(114):129–142, 1962), in favor of the memory-based model I propose. Additionally, I use the estimated parameters to simulate counterfactual scenarios and show that the advertisers’ profits might be lower if the features of the memory model are not accounted for.

In collaboration with BuildDirect.com, an online seller of home-improvement products, we conduct a large-scale randomized field experiment to study the effects of retargeted advertising -- a form of internet advertising in which banner ads are displayed to users after their visit to the advertiser's web site. We find that retargeting increases consumer engagement with the website. Turning the advertising on causes 14.6% more users to return to the website in four weeks. We find that the effectiveness of advertising decreases as the time since the consumer first visits the website increases. 30% of the effect of first week's advertising occurs on the very first day. Further, we also find clear evidence of the existence of complementarities in advertising over time – the effect of advertising in week 2 (the second week after the campaign started) is higher when the user was allocated to non-zero level of advertising in week 1. Taken together, our findings stand at odds with the view that retargeted ads inform or remind consumers of the advertised product. They are consistent with a “defensive” or a “competition-blocking” role of advertising.

Background Surgical importance of the nasolacrimal duct (NLD) for both otolaryngologists and ophthalmologists cannot be overemphasized. Injury to this structure can lead to iatrogenic epiphora, synechiae formation and need for secondary lacrimal diversion procedures. Materials and methods The present study was conducted on 27 mid-sagittal sections of head and neck of formalin fixed adult cadavers. The inferior opening of the NLD was identified and exposed. The duct and the lacrimal sac were dissected. Pertinent distances of the inferior opening of the NLD from the easily identifiable surgical landmarks were recorded, so as to accurately locate the inferior opening of the duct using a digital vernier calliper (accuracy 0.02 mm, Mitutoya, Japan). Various dimensions and angulation of the duct and lacrimal sac were measured. Results The average length of NLD was 11.42 ± 2.45 mm and it was making an angle of 20° with the vertical plane. The duct was narrowest in caliber in its upper 1/3rd in majority (82%) of the cases. The average diameter of the inferior opening of the NLD was 3.14 mm. In two cases (7.4%), the opening was only 1.8 mm wide. The mean distance of the inferior opening of the duct was 20.7 mm from the columella, 25.5 mm below the skull base and 16.5 mm above the hard palate. The average distance between the inferior opening of the NLD and anterior end of the inferior turbinate was 14.8 mm. The mean A-P diameter of superior opening of NLD was about 3 mm. The average length and width of nasolacrimal sac at its center was 6.95 and 3.24 mm respectively. Conclusion Detailed anatomical knowledge of the NLD is of great importance for safe and successful endonasal surgery. The present study attempts to provide useful surgical guidelines by using anatomic and positional relationships between the NLD and the major surrounding landmarks. 41. Does Advertising Serve as a Signal? Evidence from Field Experiments in Mobile Search

In a large-scale field experiment, we demonstrate that advertising can serve as a signal that enhances consumers' evaluations of advertised goods. We implement the experiment on a mobile search platform that provides listings and reviews for an archetypal experience good, restaurants. In collaboration with the platform, we randomize more than 200,000 consumers into exposure or no exposure of ads for about 600 local restaurants. In conditions in which consumers are exposed to advertising, we also randomly vary the disclosure to the consumer of whether a restaurant's listing is an ad. This enables us to isolate the effect on outcomes of a consumer knowing that a listing is sponsored – a pure signaling effect. We find that this disclosure increases calls to the restaurant by 77%, holding fixed all other attributes of the ad. The disclosure effect is higher when the consumer uses the platform away from his typical city of search, when the uncertainty about restaurant quality is larger, and for restaurants that have received fewer ratings in the past. Further, on the supply side, newer, higher rated and more popular restaurants advertise more on the platform. Taken together, we interpret these results as consistent with a signaling equilibrium in which ads serve as implicit signals that enhance the appeal of the advertised restaurants. Both consumers and firms seem to benefit from the signaling. Consumers shift choices systematically towards restaurants that are better rated (at baseline) in the disclosure condition compared to the no disclosure condition, and advertisers gain from the improved outcomes induced by disclosure. Our results also imply that search-platforms would gain from clear sponsorship disclosure, and thus holds implications for platform design.

High performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) analysis of mycelia of Sclerotium rolfsii grown on neem cake, and Zephyarenthes citrina bulb incorporated media was carried out. Several phenoloic acids, e.g., gallic, tannic, caffeic, cinnamic, chlorogenic and O-coumeric acids, were found in considerable amounts in treated mycelial mat as compared to the control. The amount of phenloic acids increased with increased concentration of both the materials in mycelia of 7 and 14 day-old cultures. Due to anti-oxidant and several other properties of phenolic acids, the senescence of the fungus has been prolonged which may be one probable reason of sustaining the virulence of the pathogen.

Collar rot of chickpea ( Cicer arietinum ) is caused by the soil-borne pathogen Sclerotium rolfsii and management of this ubiquitous pathogen is not possible through a single approach. An integrated approach was adopted by using vermicompost and an antagonistic strain of Pseudomonas syringae (PUR46) possessing plant growth-promoting characteristics. Treatments with vermicompost (10%, 25%, and 50% v/v) and PUR46 alone and in combination reduced seedling mortality in chickpea under glasshouse conditions. The combined effect of 25% vermicompost substitution along with seed bacterization with PUR46 was the most effective treatment, which not only increased the availability and uptake of minerals like P, Mn, and Fe in chickpea seedlings, resulting in an increase in plant growth, but also reduced plant mortality. These effects are correlated with improvement in soil physical conditions and enhanced nutritional factors due to vermicompost substitution as well as plant growth promotion and the antagonistic activity of PUR46 against the pathogen. Dual cultures of PUR46 with the S. rolfsii isolate revealed a high degree of antagonism by PUR46 against the pathogen. Performance of PUR46 was enhanced in the presence of 25% vermicompost compared with its application alone and therefore this combination may be a useful tool to manage S. rolfsii under field conditions.

The frequency of various subtypes of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) differs in various regions worldwide. We studied distribution of various subtypes of NHL by using WHO classification of lymphoid neoplasms (2000), immunophenotyping and clinicopathologic characteristics of various histologic subtypes in 935 cases. B- and T-cell NHL constituted 79.3% and 18.8% of cases. Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBL) was the most common subtype (50.2%). A lower frequency of follicular lymphoma, marginal zone lymphoma and mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) was noted compared to that observed in the developed countries, whereas a lower frequency of peripheral T-cell lymphoma - not otherwise specified (PTCL-NOS) and extranodal NK/T-cell lymphoma was seen compared to that in the other Asian countries. A higher frequency of DLBL and precursor T-lymphoblastic leukemia/lymphoma was noted. Extranodal and bone marrow involvement in MCL and PTCL-NOS was less frequent. Anaplastic variant of DLBL was noted in 21.5% of all DLBLs. Null/T-cell anaplastic large cell lymphoma presented in the older age.
