In the context of increasing probability of advancement in onset date of Indian Summer Monsoon during recent years, precipitation and circulation features of early monsoon onset events are investigated in detail using reanalysis data and model simulations. During the onset pentad (± 2 days from the onset day), an anomalous increase in precipitation is observed over the west coast of peninsular India and Bay of Bengal during early onset years compared to normal onset years. The monsoon low level jet (LLJ) also becomes stronger during the onset pentad of early onset years particularly over the southern peninsular India. However, after a week from the onset day of early years, precipitation is considerably decreased and the LLJ become weaker. Moreover, convection over the eastern Arabian Sea and western peninsular India suppresses during that period which in turn inhibits the systematic northward propagation of monsoon rainbands. This induces a ‘mini break’ like condition immediately after a week from the onset day during early onset years. Analysis of the sea surface temperature (SST) shows that, over the north eastern Arabian Sea, a lower value of SST exists during early onset years compared to normal onset years which may have a triggering role in the formation of ‘mini break’ like condition. This aspect is examined using sensitivity simulations with the Advanced Research Weather Research and Forecasting model. Simulations with reduced SST over the north eastern Arabian Sea during normal onset years exhibits considerable reduction in precipitation over the west coast of India and weakens the LLJ over the peninsular India. Whereas simulations with enhanced SST over the north eastern Arabian Sea during early onset years show increase in the convective activities over the eastern Arabian Sea and west coast of peninsular India, and the existence of ‘mini break’ like situation disappears from those years. Thus numerical simulations confirm the relation between SST over the north eastern Arabian Sea and the formation of ‘mini break’ during early onset years.

Seasonal variation of raindrop size distribution (DSD) is examined using long-term (2007–2015) observations made with Joss-Waldvogel disdrometer at Thumba (8.53°N, 76.87°E), a tropical coastal station. Data sets were classified based on the rain rate and studied the DSD variations for pre-monsoon (PRE) season, post-monsoon (POST) season and summer monsoon (MON) season. The result shows that the larger drop concentration is higher in PRE season compared to other two seasons for the same rain rate. The values of median volume diameter (Dm) are found to be lowest (highest) in MON (PRE) seasons. The gamma parameters (Λ, μ) and normalized DSD scaling parameter for concentration (Nw) are also observed to have a clear-cut seasonal variation. There is a clear trend in the slope (Λ) and Nw parameters with rain rates. Although shape parameter (μ) did not show a linear trend as such, there exist a pattern to its evolution with rain rates that is similar across seasons. The coefficients of A and b in Z-R relations also showed seasonal variations. The plausible causative mechanisms for the observed surface seasonal DSD variations are discussed using satellite and radiosonde observations. The differences in cloud structure and cloud microphysics are found to have a direct influence on the rain DSD spectra at the surface. The present results envisages that the change in monsoon circulation and the origin of cloud system (i.e. maritime or continental) play a vital role in characterizing the rain DSD, while the microphysical and dynamical processes occurring during the descent of raindrops will modify the same.

Top-down modeling estimates are among the most reliable information available on the CO2 fluxes of the earth system. The inadequate coverage of CO2 observing stations over the tropical regions adds a limitation to this estimate, especially when the satellite XCO2 is strictly screened for cloud contamination, aerosol, dust, etc. In this study, we investigated the potential benefit of a global ground-based observing station network, 17 newly proposed stations over India, and global satellite XCO2 in reducing the uncertainty of terrestrial biospheric fluxes of Tropical Asia-Eurasia in TransCom cyclo-stationary inversion. The data from selected 80 global ground-based CO2 observation stations, together with two additional stations from India (i.e., Cape Rama and Sinhagad) and satellite XCO2, helps to reduce the temperate Eurasian terrestrial flux uncertainty by 23.8%, 26.4%, and 36.2%, respectively. This further improved to 54.7% by adding the newly proposed stations over India into the inversion. By separating the Indian sub-continent from temperate Eurasia (as inspired by the heterogeneity in the terrestrial ecosystems, prevailing meteorological conditions, and the orography of this vast region), the inversion evinces the capacity of existing CO2 observations to reduce the Indian terrestrial flux uncertainty by 20.5%. The largest benefit (70% reduction of annual mean uncertainty) for estimating Indian terrestrial fluxes could be achieved by combining these global observations with data from the newly proposed stations over India. The existing two stations from India suggest Temperate Eurasia as a mild source of CO2 (0.33 ± 0.57 Pg C yr−1), albeit with prominent anthropogenic influences visible in these two stations during the dry seasons. This implies that the proposed new stations should be cautiously placed to avoid such effects. The study also finds that the newly proposed stations over India also have an impact in constraining nearby oceanic CO2 fluxes.

Day-night changes in the altitudinal distribution of tropical clouds are examined using multi-year analyses of CloudSat and CALIPSO data. The combined occurrence of all cloud types maximizes in the nighttime throughout the middle and upper troposphere. In contrast to the nighttime maxima in the appearance of optically thick tropical clouds in the ~ 5–12 km altitude band, the occurrence of such clouds exhibit a pronounced daytime enhancement in the upper troposphere (> 12 km). This arises from the more frequent occurrence of thick cirrus and deeper penetration of daytime convective clouds to the upper troposphere, as evidenced from more frequent daytime occurrence of clouds with thickness > 9 km. Apart from the afternoon convection over land and remnant cirrus from nighttime convection over ocean, the daytime cloud enhancement observed above 12 km altitude might be also driven by the larger tropospheric net cloud radiative heating and its vertical gradient during the daytime.

The interannual variability of Indian Summer Monsoon (ISM) rainfall is strongly associated with the El Nino–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), experiencing below and above normal rainfall during El Nino and La Nina years respectively. However, during recent La Nina years, particularly after 1980, the above normal ISM rainfall events are decreased compared to pre-1980 years. The strength of prominent monsoon circulations such as monsoon low level jet and tropical easterly jet are also decreased during recent La Nina years compared to pre-1980. In the spatial scale, the decrease in rainfall observes more over the monsoon trough region and the western part of Indian subcontinent. The number of active monsoon rainfall days, which is an identification of the intraseasonal ISM variability, are considerably reduced during post-1980 La Nina years. The warming over the Indian ocean during recent years influence the anomalous cooling observe over the western Indian ocean during La Nina events. The Indian ocean warming leads to an enhancement of convection over the equatorial region. Latent heat release from the enhanced equatorial convection warms the equatorial troposphere and weakens the meridional tropospheric temperature gradient over the monsoon region. These processes degrade the ascending motion over the Indian region, resulting weaker monsoon circulation and reduced rainfall.

An observing system simulation experiment (OSSE) is conducted to identify potential locations for making surface ocean pCO2 measurements in the Indian Ocean using the Bayesian Inversion method. As of the SOCATv3 release, the pCO2 data is limited in the Indian Ocean. To improve our modeling of this region, we need to identify where and what observation systems would produce the most good or benefit for their cost. The potential benefits of installing pCO2 sensors in the existing RAMA and OMNI moorings of the Indian Ocean, the potential of Bio-Argo floats (with pH measurements), and the implementation of the ship of opportunity program (SOOP) for underway sampling of pCO2 are evaluated. A cost function of dissolved inorganic carbon as a model state vector and CO2 flux mismatch as the source of error is minimized, and the basin-wide CO2 flux uncertainty reduction is estimated for different seasons. The maximum flux uncertainty reduction achievable by installing pCO2 sensors in the existing RAMA and OMNI moorings is limited to 30% during different seasons. One may consider that around 20 Bio-Argos are still the right choice over installing mooring based pCO2 sensors and achieve uncertainty reduction up to 50% with additional benefit of profiling the sub-surface upto 1000–2000 m. However, a single track SOOP has the potential to reduce the uncertainty by approximately 62%. This study identifies vital RAMA and OMNI moorings and SOOP tracks for observing Indian Ocean pCO2. Plain Language Summary. Surface ocean partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2) information is vital for estimating sea-to-air CO2 exchanges. This parameter is least available from the Indian Ocean as compared to other global tropical and southern oceans. There has been no effort made so far to measure surface ocean pCO2 in the Indian Ocean with routine monitoring such as by mounting instruments to moorings or by underway sampling via any ship of opportunity program. Therefore there is a considerable demand to start pCO2 observations in the Indian Ocean. However, one key question that emerges is where to deploy pCO2 instruments in the Indian Ocean to learn the most with limited resources. This study addresses this question with inverse modeling techniques. The study finds that the existing moorings of the Indian Ocean are capable of hosting pCO2 sensors, and data from those are useful to reduce the uncertainty in the surface sea-to-air CO2 flux estimation by a quarter magnitude. In contrast, the Bio-Argo floats with pH sensors, and the ship of opportunity underway sampling of pCO2 may benefit from reducing the same up to 50% and 62%, respectively.

Balloon-borne cryogenic frost-point hygrometer (CFH) observations of water vapour in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere (UTLS) region carried out over India, from Trivandrum [8.5°N, 76.9°E] and Hyderabad [17.5°N, 78.6°E], were compared with that obtained from quasi-collocated Aura-Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) satellite observations. Comparisons show a small dry bias for MLS in the stratosphere. Saturated or super-saturation layers observed near the base of tropical tropopause layer (TTL) are consistent with the quasi-collocated space-based observations of tropical cirrus from KALPANA-1 and CALIPSO. Disturbance of large scale waves in the upper troposphere appears to modulate the water vapour and cirrus distribution.

June–September mean wind at 850 hPa from ERA-Interim, MERRA and NCEP2 reanalyses shows an increasing trend in the south Asian monsoon Low Level Jet (LLJ) during 1980–2014. In the sub-seasonal scale, the LLJ during July and September exhibits increasing trend, while August shows a decreasing trend. Lesser changes in surface pressure over heat low region and weaker Bay of Bengal convection lead to weakening of LLJ during August while an intense heat low during September results stronger LLJ. The associated moisture transport changes affect the monsoon hydrological cycle with decreasing precipitation during August and increasing precipitation during September.

Aerosol distribution over the Arabian Sea and the Indian subcontinent during the northern hemispheric summer is dominated by mineral dust transport from the West Asian desert regions. The radiative impact of these dust plumes is expected to have a prominent role in regulating the Asian Summer Monsoon circulation. While satellite observations have provided information in the spatial distribution of aerosols over the oceanic regions during the season, their utility over the land is rather limited. This study examines the transport of mineral dust over the West Asian desert, the Indian subcontinent and the surrounding oceanic regions during the summer monsoon season with the help of a regional scale model, WRF-Chem. Geographical locations of prominent dust sources, altitude ranges of mineral dust transport and their inter-annual variations are examined in detail. Multi-year model simulations were carried out during 2007 to 2012 with a model integration from 15 May to 31 August of each year. Six-year seasonal mean (June to August) vertically integrated dust amount from 1000 to 300 hPa level shows prominent dust loading over the eastern parts of Arabian desert and the northwestern part of India which are identified as two major sources of dust production. Large latitudinal gradient in dust amount is observed over the Arabian Sea with the largest dust concentration over the northwestern part and is primarily caused by the prevailing northwesterly wind at 925 hPa level from the Arabian desert. The model simulations clearly show that most of the dust distributed over the Indo-Gangetic plane originates from the Rajasthan desert located in the northwestern part of India, whereas dust observed over the central and south peninsular India and over the Arabian Sea are mainly transported from the Arabian desert. Abnormal dust loading is observed over the north Arabian Sea during June 2008. This has been produced as a result of the low pressure system (associated with the onset of summer monsoon) which entered in to the Arabian land mass, resulting strong wind and large dust storms over the region; the prevailing northwesterly wind transported these dust in to the Arabian Sea.

Six-hourly soundings (GPS sonde) were carried out at the central equatorial Indian Ocean (80o–83oE) during 25th September–10th October 2011 under the CINDY2011 (Cooperative Indian Ocean Experiment on Intra-seasonal variability in Year 2011) field campaign. One-degree interval soundings were also taken along a meridional section at 83oE from 5oN to 5oS during 12–20 October 2011 to supplement the time series data. Relative humidity (RH) and meridional wind component exhibit downward propagation of air mass in bands of high and low RH associated with northerly and southerly winds, respectively. Low (20–100 day) and high (2–10 day) frequency band pass filtered OLR data (NOAA-interpolated OLR) revealed the presence of Madden and Julian Oscillation (MJO) with 20- to 40-day periodicity, and weak Mixed Rossby Gravity (MRG) waves with 4- to 5-day periodicity. Eastward (westward) propagating MJO (MRG wave) with wave numbers 3–4 (4–5), amplitudes of anomaly 1.1–1.2 Wm−2 (1.8 Wm−2) were observed. The asymmetric bifurcation of warm surface water by the subsurface cold water off Sumatra generate asymmetric convective regimes in the vicinity of the equator probably triggered convection with periodicity similar to MRG waves. The intermittent surface convection associated is believed to be responsible for the ascending moisture to the middle troposphere prior to the initiation of MJO. The moisture pumped to the middle troposphere makes the layer convectively more unstable leading to the state of deep convection, a situation conducive for the MJO initiation processes.

In view of the large uncertainties in the methane (CH4) emission estimates and the large spatial gaps in its measurements, studies on near-surface CH4 on regional basis become highly relevant. This paper presents the first time observational results of a study on the impacts of mesoscale meteorology on the temporal variations of near-surface CH4 at a tropical coastal station, in India. It is based on the in-situ measurements conducted during January 2014 to August 2016, using an on-line CH4 analyzer working on the principle of gas chromatography. The diurnal variation shows a daytime low (1898–1925 ppbv) and nighttime high (1936–2022 ppbv) extending till early morning hours. These changes are closely associated with the mesoscale circulations, namely Sea Breeze (SB) and Land Breeze (LB), as obtained through the meteorological observations, WRF simulations of the circulations and the diurnal variation of boundary layer height as observed by the Microwave Radiometer Profiler. The diurnal enhancement always coincides with the onset of LB. Several cases of different onset timings of LB were examined and results presented. The CH4 mixing ratio also exhibits significant seasonal patterns being maximum in winter and minimum in pre-monsoon/monsoon with significant inter-annual variations, which is also reflected in diurnal patterns, and are associated with changing synoptic meteorology. This paper also presents an analysis of in-situ measured near-surface CH4, column averaged and upper tropospheric CH4 retrieved by Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) onboard Earth Observing System (EOS)/Aqua which gives insight into the vertical distribution of the CH4 over the location. An attempt is also made to estimate the instantaneous radiative forcing for the measured CH4 mixing ratio.

The evidence for diurnal variation of monsoon low-level jet (MLLJ) over the southern tip of India is illustrated from observations, a mesoscale model results, and long-term reanalysis products. This illustration showed that MLLJ has a diurnal variation in its strength and location of maxima. Diurnal signature of MLLJ is not found to be location-specific. Stronger jets are formed at a lower elevation during the nighttime, and the jets are weaker during the day but are higher elevated. During the daytime, a secondary jet is also observed along with the MLLJ. Both the jets were numerically simulated during the onset phase of southwest monsoon over the southwest coast of India. Thirty-year climatological analysis from Modern Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Applications (MERRA) showed that the secondary jet is shallow and weak during the pre-onset phase of monsoon. With the progress of monsoon, the MLLJ gets stronger with increased wind speed and elevated location of its core. In occasions where the jet is strong before the onset, the strongest jets proceed after the onset. Daytime MLLJ is higher elevated compared to the nocturnal MLLJ due to the frictional decoupling.

Optimal network design, for ground-based monitoring of atmospheric mole fractions of carbon dioxide (CO2) over India to better constrain the Indian terrestrial surface fluxes, is proposed here using a Lagrangian Particle Dispersion Model FLEXPART and Bayesian inversion methods. Potential emission sensitivity from FLEXPART, prior flux uncertainties from CASA-GFED biosphere fluxes and CDIAC fossil fuel fluxes, and assumed uniform observational uncertainty of 2 ppm are used to calculate prior and posterior cost functions. A total of 73 grid cells are identified over the Indian region in 2°x2° latitude by longitude resolution assuming each cell as a potential site, ‘a-priori’. Further, the effectiveness of CO2 observations from these locations to reduce the Indian terrestrial flux uncertainty is quantified using an incremental optimization method. Based on the above objective, we have (a) ranked the existing nine stations, (b) devised a methodology to design an extended network by adding a few more potential stations to the existing stations, and (c) identified a completely new set of optimal stations for measuring atmospheric CO2 over India. The study shows that the base network of existing stations scattered over India could reduce the uncertainty of Indian terrestrial surface flux estimation in an inversion framework, at this resolution, by more than 30% during post-monsoon and winter season, and by more than 15% during other parts of the year. Addition of five new stations to the base network could reduce the uncertainty by an additional 15% for all the seasons reaching up to 45%. In the ‘new network’, twelve stations are able to achieve an equivalent flux uncertainty reduction of fourteen stations achieved by the ‘extended network’ during each season. Locations of stations are more important than the magnitude of reduction since it depends on the values of the prior and observational uncertainties. The most important and essential ‘new’ stations in the extended network are over the northeastern region and Indo-Gangetic plain, during most of the year. Only during the post-monsoon season, additional stations are required in the western peninsular region. Finally, a consolidated set for all seasons comprising seventeen members is proposed. The study highlights a major zone of CO2 ‘observational void’ that exists in potential locations near east and northeast parts of India. Immediate requirement of CO2 monitoring initiative in these areas is highly recommended.

The Advanced Research Weather Research and Forecasting (AR-WRF) model is used to study the influence of Western Ghats situated along the west cost of peninsular India in the mean characteristics of the Asian summer monsoon (ASM) through numerical simulations. A control simulation (CTRL) is carried out using 11-year (2000–2010) mean initial and lateral boundary conditions from the ERA-Interim reanalysis to simulate the mean atmospheric features of the ASM. The Modern-Era retrospective analysis for research and applications (MERRA) data along with the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM, 3B42 daily rainfall) data are used to validate the CTRL simulation. The simulated dynamical features and precipitation characteristics during the ASM period agree well with the MERRA reanalysis and TRMM observations. In order to examine the role of Western Ghats on the mean characteristics of the ASM, a sensitivity simulation (NoWG) is carried out with orography reduced to surface over a domain bound between 5°–28°N and 72°–90°E, keeping all other conditions unchanged. This sensitivity analysis showed an enhancement in the low level monsoon flow over the Indian Ocean and peninsular India in the absence of Western Ghats. The prominent up-draft over the west coast of peninsular India observed in the CTRL simulation also decrease in the absence of Western Ghats. The simulated rainfall show a considerable decrease over the west coast and an enhancement over the east coast of peninsular India in the absence of Western Ghats. These simulations clearly depict the importance of Western Ghats in the circulation dynamics and rainfall features during the ASM period.

High-resolution dual polarized micropulse lidar (MPL) observations have been used to investigate the diurnal evolution of atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) during winter (2008–2011) over Thiruvananthapuram (8.5°N, 77°E), a tropical coastal station located at southwest Peninsular India, adjoining the Arabian Sea. The lidar observations are compared with the boundary layer characteristics derived from concurrent balloon-borne radiosonde observations. Regional distribution of precipitation during the onset phase of the Indian summer monsoon (15 May–15 June) shows distinct patterns in the years 2009 and 2010, with the latter having considerably more precipitation over the southeast Arabian Sea (AS) and the west coast of peninsular India. During these years, the location and regional extent of the warm pool in the AS are also distinct. In 2009, the warm pool core is located in the equatorial region, whereas in 2010 it spreads to a wide region of the AS. Sensitivity experiments with different SST forcings have been carried out using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model to understand the influence of the AS warm pool on the monsoon onset precipitation characteristics. Simulations with actual SSTs in the AS and climatological SSTs elsewhere are able to reproduce the distinct behavior of the monsoon onset precipitation observed during 2009 and 2010. These simulations show suppressed convection over the central and northern AS in 2009, while warmer SSTs in the AS favor enhanced convection during 2010 combined with a sharp contrast in the moisture transport. The strong intrusion of drier air from the north AS effectively confines the moist air mass from the south, causing a net transport of moisture toward the southwest coast of peninsular India and leads to positive anomalies in precipitation over the region in 2010. However, during 2009, the drier air from the north mixes rather easily over the AS, which suppress the convection.

This research article aims at characterization of the sea-breeze circulation over Thumba (8.5°N, 76.9°E, India) in the winter season from December 2008 to February 2009, when this mesoscale circulation over the study domain was prominent. The characteristics of sea-breeze circulation cell comprising sea-breeze and compensatory return flow are investigated for clear-sky and cloudy days. The study indicated delayed onset of sea-breeze on the cloudy days as compared to the clear-sky days and the vertical thickness of sea-breeze circulation cell was found to be larger for the clear-sky days. Vertical thickness of the return flow for both clear-sky and cloudy days was larger than that of the sea-breeze flow. Simultaneous observations of upper-air meteorological parameters obtained through balloon-borne GPS sonde ascents carried out from Thumba and its adjoining coastal ocean on 29 January 2009 as part of the Winter phase of Integrated Campaign for Aerosols, gases and Radiation Budget (W-ICARB) are utilized for a case study towards investigation of diurnal evolution of the sea-breeze circulation cell. Results obtained from this study indicated systematic evolution of sea-breeze circulation over Thumba, however, it was not very clear over ocean which is attributed to cloudy conditions that prevailed on the day of measurement.

For the first time, spatiotemporal structure of stratospheric air intrusion into the troposphere during the episode of tropical cyclone is simulated using Advanced Research-Weather Research and Forecast (WRF-ARW) model. The WRF-ARW simulation effectively reproduces the spatiotemporal evolution of vertical velocity associated with tropical cyclone and shows good agreement with the mesosphere–stratosphere–troposphere (MST) radar observations at Gadanki (13.5°N, 79.2°E). The observed intrusion in the upper-troposphere has a narrow band with the width of about 50 km and stretch over 200–250 km and vertical structure of 5–6 km. This study shows that the intrusion occurs in the periphery of the cyclone and confirms that mesoscale simulation using WRF model can be used during disturbed weather conditions and for studying TSE processes.

Accurate knowledge of different meteorological parameters over a launch site is very crucial for efficient management of satellite launch operations. Local weather over the Indian satellite launch site located at Sriharikota High Altitude Range (SHAR: 13.72°N, 80.22°E) is very much dependent on the atmospheric circulation prevailing over the Bay of Bengal oceanic region and topography-induced convective activities. With a view to providing severe weather threat prediction in terms of launch commit criteria (LCC), two numerical atmospheric models namely high-resolution regional model (HRM) and advanced regional prediction system (ARPS) are made operational over SHAR in a synoptic and mesoscale domain, respectively. In the present research article, two launch campaigns through Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C11 and PSLV-C12) when contrasting weather conditions prevailed over the launch site are chosen for demonstration of potential of two models in providing location-specific short-to-medium-range weather predictions meeting the needs of LCC. In the case of PSLV-C11 campaign, when the launch site underwent frequent thundershower-associated rainfall, ARPS model–derived meteorological fields were effectively used in prediction of probability of the wet spells. On the other hand, Bay of Bengal underwent severe cyclonic storm during PSLV-C12 campaign, and its formation was reasonable captured through HRM simulations. It is concluded that a combination of HRM and ARPS provide reliable short-to-medium-range weather prediction over SHAR, which has got profound importance in launch-related activities.

On 15 January 2010, Thiruvananthapuram in India (8.5°N, 76.9°E) witnessed one of the longest possible noontime annular solar eclipses spanning a period of about 7 min centred at 1314 local time. Here, we present a case study on the behaviour of the atmospheric surface layer by comparing the eclipse-induced observations with similar measurements recorded on cloud-free/clear-sky days. During the peak period of the eclipse, the incoming solar irradiance was reduced by 87% of its normal values, resulting in an air-temperature decrease near the surface of 1.2°C in association with a significant reduction in turbulent kinetic energy, momentum flux and sensible heat flux. The rate of instantaneous decay in solar radiation and sensible heat flux from the first contact of the eclipse to its annularity was greater than that seen during normal evening hours.

On 15 January 2010, Thumba (8.5°N, 76.9°E) witnessed one of the longest known noontime annular solar eclipses (ASEs) spanning a period of about 7 min, centered at 1314 hours local time. In this research article, we present a case study on the behaviour of the atmospheric boundary layer characteristics and its vertical structure in response to this rare celestial event by making use of a suite of different in-situ instruments. During the peak period of the ASE, the incoming solar irradiance was dimmed by about 87% of its normal values, resulting in a significant reduction in the magnitudes of turbulent kinetic energy and surface-layer turbulent fluxes of heat and momentum. The intensity and vertical thickness of the sea/land breeze circulation cell over the study domain also weakened. However, the mixed layer heights determined from balloon-borne GPS Radiosonde did not show any appreciable changes. Analysis of vertical profiles of thermodynamic parameters in association with the wind direction during ASE indicated the formation of a double mixed layer between 700 and 1500 m and is attributed to horizontal advection of a different airmass at those altitudes.

The circulation dynamics of an event marked by the formation of an aerosol cluster off the coast of Maharashtra on April 22, 2006, its southward migration along the Indian west coast with a mean speed of ~200 km/day and its final dissipation after reaching the end of the peninsula by April 28, 2006 as revealed by MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) against the pre-monsoon conditions of April 2006 are examined in this study. The maximum aerosol concentration in the cluster was found getting confined to lower and lower altitudes during its southward movement. The NCEP/NCAR (National Centers for Environmental Prediction/National Center for Atmospheric Research) reanalysis wind field indicates that the atmospheric circulation, especially the horizontal wind convergence is the major factor that guides the formation and the dynamics of the cluster. Fine mode fraction from MODIS suggests that the cluster mainly consists of coarse dust particles. The regional climate model, RegCM3 with an efficient dust generation module simulates the formation and movement of the cluster appreciably well. The simulations which also exhibit the altitudinally descending nature of the cluster during its southward movement confirm the mechanism which governs the cluster dynamics suggested based on MODIS and NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data.

The strong cross-equatorial low level jet stream (LLJ) with its core around 850 hPa of the Asian summer monsoon (June–September) is found to have large intraseasonal variability. During the monsoon onset over Kerala, India, and during break monsoon periods, when the convective heating of the atmosphere is over the low latitudes of the Indian Ocean, the axis of the LLJ is oriented southeastward over the eastern Arabian Sea and it flows east between Sri Lanka and the equator and there is no LLJ through peninsular India. This affects the transport of moisture produced over the Indian Ocean to peninsular India and the Bay of Bengal. In contrast, during active monsoon periods when there is an east–west band of strong convective heating in the latitudes 10°–20°N from about longitude 70° to about 120°E, the LLJ axis passes from the central Arabian Sea eastward through peninsular India and it provides moisture for the increased convection in the Bay of Bengal and for the monsoon depressions forming there...

Vertical profiles of meteorological parameters obtained from balloon-borne GPS Radiosonde for a period of more than two years are analyzed for characterization of the coastal atmospheric boundary layer (CABL) over Thumba ( 8 . 5 ∘ N , 7 6 . 9 ∘ E , India). The study reports seasonal variability in the thickness of three different sublayers of the CABL, namely, mixed layer, turbulent flow, and sea breeze flow. Among the three, the vertical thickness of sea breeze flow showed considerable dominance on the other two throughout the year. Mixed layer heights derived through gradients in virtual potential temperature ( 𝜃 𝑣 ) showed large seasonal variability with a peak in the Summer and Post-Monsoon. On the other hand, the vertical thickness of turbulent flow remained steady all through the year. Results from the present study indicate that the magnitudes of mixed layer heights are often larger than the turbulent flow thickness.

20 pages; International audience; The Weather Regional Forecast (WRF) model is used in this study to downscale low-resolution data over West Africa. First, the performance of the regional model is estimated through contemporary period experiments (1981-1990) forced by ARPEGE-CLIMAT GCM output (ARPEGE) and ERA-40 re-analyses. Key features of the West African monsoon circulation are reasonably well represented. WRF atmospheric dynamics and summer rainfall compare better to observations than ARPEGE forcing data. WRF simulated moisture transport over West Africa is also consistent in both structure and variability with re-analyses, emphasizing the substantial role played by the West African Monsoon (WAM) and African Easterly Jet (AEJ) flows. The statistical significance of potential climate changes for the A2 scenario between 2032 and 2041 is enhanced in the downscaling from ARPEGE by the regional experiments, with substantial rainfall increases over the Guinea Gulf and eastern Sahel. Future scenario WRF simulations are characterized by higher temperatures over the eastern Tropical Atlantic suggesting more evaporation available locally. This leads to increased moisture advection towards eastern regions of the Guinea Gulf where rainfall is enhanced through a strengthened WAM flow, supporting surface moisture convergence over West Africa. Warmer conditions over both the Mediterranean region and northeastern Sahel could also participate in enhancing moisture transport within the AEJ. The strengthening of the thermal gradient between the Sahara and Guinean regions, particularly pronounced north of 10A degrees N, would support an intensification of the AEJ northwards, given the dependance of the jet to the position/intensity of the meridional gradient. In turn, mid-tropospheric moisture divergence tends to be favored within the AEJ region supporting southwards deflection of moist air and contributing to deep moist convection over the Sahel where late summer rainfall regimes are sustained in the context of the A2 scenario regional projections. In conclusion, WRF proved to be a valuable and efficient tool to help downscaling GCM projections over West Africa, and thus assessing issues such as water resources vulnerability locally.

International audience; Using both empirical and numerical ensemble approaches this study focuses on the Mediterranean / West African relationship in northern summer. Statistical analyses utilize skin temperature, sea surface temperature, in situ and satellite rainfall, Outgoing Longwave Radiation (OLR) observations and reanalyzed data winds and specific humidity on isobaric surfaces. Numerical investigations are based on a large set of sensitivity experiments performed on four Atmospheric General Circulation Models (AGCM): ARPEGE-Climat3, ECHAM4, LMDZ4 and UCLA7.3. Model outputs are compared to observations, discussed model by model and with an ensemble (multi-model) approach. As in previous studies the anomalous Mediterranean warm events are associated with specific impacts over the African monsoon region, i.e., a more intense monsoon, enhanced flux convergence and ascendances around the ITCZ, a strengthening of low level moisture advection and a more northward location of ascending motion in West Africa. The results show also new features (i) thermal variability observed in the two Mediterranean basins has unalike impacts, i.e. the western Mediterranean covaries with convection in Gulf of Guinea, while the eastern Mediterranean can be interpreted as Sahelian thermal-forcing; (ii) although observations show symmetry between warming and cooling, modelling evidences only support the eastern warming influence; (iii) anomalous East warm situations are associated with a more northward migration of the monsoon system accompanied by enhanced southwesterly flow and weakened northeasterly climatological wind; (iv) the multi-model response shows that anomalous East warm surface temperatures generate an enhancement of the overturning circulation in low and high levels, an increase in TEJ (Tropical Easterly Jet) and a decrease in AEJ (African Easterly Jet).

[1] The Mesoscale Model MM5 is used to study the regional features of the West African Monsoon onset. In order to increase the results, simulations are carried out for eight consecutive seasons (March to September) of the years 1994 to 2001. The results show that the model can reproduce the dynamical features of the monsoon in a reasonably good manner but the seasonal cycle seems enhanced. It is hypothesized that overestimated rainfall amounts could be related to a poor representation of the land surface characteristics. Nevertheless, the mean simulated monsoon onset dates are similar to those find in the CMAP data set. The onset is characterized by an apparent increase in zonal flow that could bring moisture from the eastern Atlantic ocean, in conjunction with a deepening of the Saharan heat low. These results show that the model can be used to detail the basic processes linked to the monsoon onset and to perform dynamical downscaling.

Time series analysis of Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) derived from NOAA-AVHRR data during the period 1996–1999 and the MODIS data during 2000–2009 over the Arabian Sea revealed a systematic biennial variability in the high AOD during summer months. The variability is more prominent over the northern and central parts of the Arabian Sea and became less significant towards southern latitudes. The possible mechanisms for these are examined by estimating the source strength over coastal Arabia and AOD flow rate through the western boundary of the Arabian Sea. Both these show clear signatures of biennial variability with same phase as AOD for most of the years. This result indicates that the observed biennial variability in AOD is likely to be the outcome of combined effects of biennial variability in wind generated sea-salt aerosols and dust transported from Arabia.
