Flow coefficients vn of the orders n=1-6 are measured with the High-Acceptance DiElectron Spectrometer (HADES) at GSI for protons, deuterons, and tritons as a function of centrality, transverse momentum, and rapidity in Au+Au collisions at sNN=2.4 GeV. Combining the information from the flow coefficients of all orders allows us to construct for the first time, at collision energies of a few GeV, a multidifferential picture of the angular emission pattern of these particles. It reflects the complicated interplay between the effect of the central fireball pressure on the emission of particles and their subsequent interaction with spectator matter. The high precision information on higher order flow coefficients is a major step forward in constraining the equation of state of dense baryonic matter.

We present high-statistic data on charged-pion emission from Au + Au collisions at $$\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} = 2.4~\hbox {GeV}$$ s NN = 2.4 GeV (corresponding to $$E_{beam} = 1.23~\hbox {A GeV}$$ E beam = 1.23 A GeV ) in four centrality classes in the range 0–40% of the most central collisions. The data are analyzed as a function of transverse momentum, transverse mass, rapidity, and polar angle. Pion multiplicity per participating nucleon decreases moderately with increasing centrality. The polar angular distributions are found to be non-isotropic even for the most central event class. Our results on pion multiplicity fit well into the general trend of the available world data, but undershoot by $$2.5~\sigma $$ 2.5 σ data from the FOPI experiment measured at slightly lower beam energy. We compare our data to state-of-the-art transport model calculations (PHSD, IQMD, PHQMD, GiBUU and SMASH) and find substantial differences between the measurement and the results of these calculations.

We present an analysis of proton-number fluctuations in sNN=2.4 GeV Au197+Au197 collisions measured with the High-Acceptance DiElectron Spectrometer (HADES) at GSI Helmholtzzentrum fur Schwerionenforschung, Darmstadt. With the help of extensive detector simulations done with Isospin Quantum Molecular Dynamics (IQMD) transport model events including nuclear clusters, various nuisance effects influencing the observed proton cumulants have been investigated. Acceptance and efficiency corrections have been applied as a function of fine-grained rapidity and transverse momentum bins, as well as considering local track density dependencies. Next, the effects of volume changes within particular centrality selections have been considered and beyond-leading-order corrections have been applied to the data. The efficiency and volume-corrected proton number moments and cumulants Kn of orders n=1, 2, 3, and 4 have been obtained as a function of centrality and phase-space bin, as well as the corresponding correlators Cn. We find that the observed correlators show a power-law scaling with the mean number of protons, i.e., Cn∞«N»n, indicative of mostly long-range multiparticle correlations in momentum space. We also present a comparison of our results with Au + Au collision data obtained at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at similar centralities but higher √sNN.

Pion induced reactions provide unique opportunities for an unambiguous description of baryonic resonances and their coupling channels by means of a partial wave analysis. Using the secondary pion beam at SIS18, the two pion production in the second resonance region has been investigated to unravel the role of the $N(1520) \frac{3}{2}^-$ resonance in the intermediate $\rho$ production. Results on exclusive channels with one pion ($\pi^{-}p$) and two pions ($\pi^{+}\pi^{-}n$, $\pi^{0}\pi^{-}p$) in the final state measured in the $\pi^{-}-p$ reaction at four different pion beam momenta (0.650, 0.685, 0.733, and 0.786 GeV/c) are presented. The excitation function of the different partial waves and $\Delta\pi$, $N\sigma$ and $N\rho$ isobar configurations is obtained, using the Bonn-Gatchina partial wave analysis. The $N(1520) \frac{3}{2}^-$ resonance is found to dominate the $N\rho$ final state with the branching ratio $BR=12.2 \pm 1.9\%$.

High-statistics $$\pi ^-\pi ^-$$π-π- and $$\pi ^+\pi ^+$$π+π+ femtoscopy data are presented for Au + Au collisions at $$\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}} = 2.4~\hbox {GeV}$$sNN=2.4GeV, measured with HADES at SIS18/GSI. The experimental correlation functions allow the determination of the space-time extent of the corresponding emission sources via a comparison to models. The emission source, parametrized as three-dimensional Gaussian distribution, is studied in dependence on pair transverse momentum, azimuthal emission angle with respect to the reaction plane, collision centrality and beam energy. For all centralities and transverse momenta, a geometrical distribution of ellipsoidal shape is found in the plane perpendicular to the beam direction with the larger extension perpendicular to the reaction plane. For large transverse momenta, the corresponding eccentricity approaches the initial eccentricity. The eccentricity is smallest for most central collisions, where the shape is almost circular. The magnitude of the tilt angle of the emission ellipsoid in the reaction plane decreases with increasing centrality and increasing transverse momentum. All source radii increase with centrality, largely exhibiting a linear rise with the cube root of the number of participants. A substantial charge-sign difference of the source radii is found, appearing most pronounced at low transverse momentum. The extracted source parameters are consistent with the extrapolation of their energy dependence down from higher energies.

In this letter we report the first multi-differential measurement of correlated pion-proton pairs from 2 billion Au+Au collisions at \sqrt{s_{NN}} = 2.42 GeV collected with HADES. In this energy regime the population of \Delta(1232) resonances plays an important role in the way energy is distributed between intrinsic excitation energy and kinetic energy of the hadrons in the fireball. The triple differential d3N/dM{\pi}pdpTdy distributions of correlated {\pi}p pairs have been determined by subtracting the {\pi}p combinatorial background using an iterative method. The invariant-mass distributions in the \Delta(1232) mass region show strong deviations from a Breit-Wigner function with vacuum width and mass. The yield of correlated pion-proton pairs exhibits a complex isospin, rapidity and transverse-momentum dependence. In the invariant mass range 1.1 < Minv (GeV/c2) < 1.4, the yield is found to be similar for {\pi}+p and {\pi}-p pairs, and to follow a power law ^{\alpha}, where is the mean number of participating nucleons. The exponent {\alpha} depends strongly on the pair transverse momentum (pT) while its pT-integrated and charge-averaged value is {\alpha} = 1.5 \pm 0.08stat \pm 0.2sys., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures

A feasibility study has been performed in order to investigate the performance of the HADES detector to measure the electromagnetic decays of the hyperon resonances $\Sigma(1385)^0$, $\Lambda(1405)$ and $\Lambda{\Lambda}(1520)$ as well as the production of double strange baryon systems $\Xi^-$ and $\Lambda\Lambda$ in p+p reactions at a beam kinetic energy of 4.5 GeV. The existing HADES detector will be upgraded by a new Forward Detector, which extends the detector acceptance into a range of polar angles that plays a crucial role for these investigations. The analysis of each channel is preceded by a consideration of the production cross-sections. No Brasil, a mistura asfáltica a quente, mais conhecida como CA (Concreto Asfáltico), é a mais tradicionalmente utilizada na pavimentação devido às boas propriedades mecânicas que apresenta. A fabricação da mesma por meio de usinas de asfalto é considerada uma fonte de poluição ambiental quando se atenta ao excessivo consumo energético exigido para atingir a temperatura determinada em projeto, tanto dos agregados e ligante como da mistura asfáltica em sua composição final, tendo como consequência produção demasiada de poluentes. No entanto, surgem as misturas mornas, que tem como principal característica a redução da temperatura de usinagem e compactação, com consequente redução na emissão de poluentes e menor impacto nas áreas de abrangência dos empreendimentos. Logo, o presente trabalho objetivou avaliar a influência da temperatura de compactação no desempenho à fadiga de misturas asfálticas quentes e mornas, através de análises mecanicistas pelo Software SisPav e de cálculos, para determinação do desempenho à fadiga nos pavimentos. Percebeu-se que mesmo com a redução de temperatura de compactação as misturas mornas obtiveram melhores resultados, e as misturas quentes apresentaram redução notável de desempenho à fadiga quando compactadas a temperaturas não ideais, resultando em fissuração precoce do pavimento. In Brazil, the hot asphalt mix, better known as CA(Asphalt Concrete), is the most traditionally used in paving due to its good mechanical properties. The manufacture of the same by means of asphalt plants is considered a source of environmental pollution when it is taken care of the excessive energy consumption required to reach the temperature determined in the design of both the aggregates and binder and the asphalt mixture in its final composition, production of pollutants. However, warm mixtures arise, which has as main characteristic the reduction of the temperature of machining and compaction, with consequent reduction in the emission of pollutants and less impact in the scope areas of the enterprises. Therefore, the present work aimed to evaluate the influence of compaction temperature on the fatigue performance of hot and warm asphalt mixtures, through mechanistic analysis by SisPav Software and calculations. to determine the performance of pavement fatigue. It was observed that even with the reduction of compaction temperature the warm mixes obtained better results, and the hot mixtures presented a remarkable reduction of fatigue performance when compacted at non-ideal temperatures, resulting in early cracking of the pavement

We present the first observation of K- and \phi absorption within nuclear matter by means of \pi- -induced reactions on C and W targets at an incident beam momentum of 1.7 GeV/c studied with HADES at SIS18/GSI. The double ratio (K-/K+)W / (K-/K+)C is found to be 0.319 \pm 0.009(stat)+0.014-0.012 (syst) indicating a larger absorption of K- in heavier targets as compared to lighter ones. The measured \phi/K- ratios in \pi-+C and \pi^- +W reactions within the HADES acceptance are found to be equal to $0.55 \pm 0.03(stat)+0.06-0.07$ (syst) and to $0.63 \pm 0.05(stat)-0.11+0.11$ (syst), respectively. The similar ratios measured in the two different reactions demonstrate for the first time experimentally that the dynamics of the \phi meson in nuclear medium is strongly coupled to the K- dynamics. The large difference in the \phi production off C and W nuclei is discussed in terms of a strong \phiN in-medium coupling., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

The HADES collaboration uses the e+e−production as a probe of the resonance matter produced in collisions at incident energies of 1-3.5 GeV/nucleon at GSI. Elementary reactions provide useful references for these studies and give information on resonance Dalitz decays (R→Ne+e−). Such processes are sensitive to the structure of time-like electromagnetic baryon transitions in a kinematic range where (off-shell) vector mesons play a crucial role. Results obtained in proton-proton reactions and in a commissioning pion-beam experiment are reported and prospects for future pion beam experiments and for first hyperon Dalitz decay measurements are described. The connection with the investigations of medium effects to be continued with HADES in the next years at SIS18 and SIS100 is also discussed.

International audience; About 10 μs after the Big Bang, the universe was filled—in addition to photons and leptons—with strong-interaction matter consisting of quarks and gluons, which transitioned to hadrons at temperatures close to kT = 150 MeV and densities several times higher than those found in nuclei. This quantum chromodynamics (QCD) matter can be created in the laboratory as a transient state by colliding heavy ions at relativistic energies. The different phases in which QCD matter may exist depend for example on temperature, pressure or baryochemical potential, and can be probed by studying the emission of electromagnetic radiation. Electron–positron pairs emerge from the decay of virtual photons, which immediately decouple from the strong interaction, and thus provide information about the properties of QCD matter at various stages. Here, we report the observation of virtual photon emission from baryon-rich QCD matter. The spectral distribution of the electron–positron pairs is nearly exponential, providing evidence for a source of temperature in excess of 70 MeV with constituents whose properties have been modified, thus reflecting peculiarities of strong-interaction QCD matter. Its bulk properties are similar to the dense matter formed in the final state of a neutron star merger, as apparent from recent multimessenger observation.

We investigate identical pion HBT intensity interferometry for central Au+Au collisions at 1.23A GeV. High-statistics $\pi^-\pi^-$ and $\pi^+\pi^+$ data are measured with HADES at SIS18/GSI. The radius parameters, derived from the correlation function depending on relative momenta in the longitudinal-comoving system and parametrized as three-dimensional Gaussian distribution, are studied as function of transverse momentum. A substantial charge-sign difference of the source radii is found, particularly pronounced at low transverse momentum. The extracted Coulomb-corrected source parameters agree well with a smooth extrapolation of the center-of-mass energy dependence established at higher energies, extending the corresponding excitation functions down towards a very low energy. Older sexual minorities belonging to a religious group may experience poorer psychological wellbeing, as they have historically been discriminated against by religious communities. However, some research suggests that LGBTQ individuals can benefit from religious support. This study examined the relations of outness to religious community and religious activity with depression in 102 lesbian, gay, and bisexual adults over the age of 55. As part of a larger study, participants completed the Religion and Spirituality Questionnaire and the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale. Of those who reported being religious or spiritual (n=87), outness to religious community was significantly correlated with relying on religious teachings for problems, satisfaction with outness to religious community, relying on religious beliefs as a guide, and praying (ps

Depression as well as dissatisfaction with sexual wellbeing is common in older lesbian women and gay men. This study explored the relationship of sexual functioning and satisfaction with depression severity in lesbians and gay men who were ages 55 years and older. As part of a larger study, 32 lesbian women and 44 gay men were given the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale, Changes in Sexual Functioning Questionnaire, and questions regarding sexual satisfaction and frequency of current sexual activity. In gay men, depression severity was significantly correlated with sexual functioning (r=-.448, p=.015) but not with general sexual satisfaction (r=-.212, p=.287). When examining specific items of sexual satisfaction, enjoyment, frequency, desire, and thoughts and pleasure of thoughts of sexual activity were significantly negatively correlated with depression severity. As for sexual functioning, only ability and frequency of ejaculation and pleasure in orgasm was negatively correlated with depression severity in gay men. In lesbian women, depression was not significantly correlated with sexual functioning or satisfaction or to specific items of sexual satisfaction and functioning. Results suggest that depression severity was negatively correlated with sexual satisfaction but less so with functioning in gay men. However, no significant relationships were found between sexual functioning and satisfaction with depression in lesbian women. These findings suggest that sexual satisfaction and functioning may play an important role in the emotional wellbeing of older gay men, but not in older lesbian women.

Objective To examine whether demographic variables can assist in predicting executive dysfunction in individuals with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). Method Data were collected from presurgical evaluations of 13 individuals with TLE (67% females, mean age 34 ± 12) at the University of California, San Francisco Epilepsy Center. Executive functions were assessed using subtests from the D-KEFS (Verbal Fluency and Color/Word Interference Tests) and the Trail Making Test B. Given that depression and anxiety symptoms have been previously shown to be associated with poorer executive performance in individuals with TLE (Paradiso et al., 2001), predictability of the BDI-II and BAI scores were also tested. Linear regression analyses were used to test predictive values of demographic variables (age, age at seizure onset [ASO], years of education, gender, and right vs. left temporal epileptogenic source). Results ASO (β = .75, p = .021), gender (β = .632, p = .041), and education (β = .555, p = .05) explained 66% of the variance in the Verbal Fluency Switching scaled scores (R²=.66, F(4,8)= 3.876, p = .049). Education (β = .772, p = .009) and ASO (β = .686, p = .023) explained 70% of the variance in Verbal Fluency Switching Accuracy scaled scores (R² = .708, F(4,8) = 4.844, p = .028). Age (β = -.862, p = .003) and seizure onset (β = .457, p = .049) explained 52% of the variance in BAI scores (R² = .525, F(4,16) = 3.319, p = .032). Conclusions ASO predicted category switching and anxiety severity, while none of the demographic variables explored in this study predicted visuomotor switching. Further research should explore the efficacy of early interventions to protect against future executive dysfunction in TLE.

Objective The purpose of this study is to investigate whether executive functioning will moderate the relationship of a history of mental illness on aggression in a male forensic population. Method Using an archival database from a larger study, 232 male inmates (ages 21 and 49 years old) from three medium/maximum Maryland Correctional facilities were recruited using a pseudo-random selection process during intake. Participants were administered three EF tasks (Cambridge Decision Making Task, Logan Stop-Signal Task, and Stroop Interference Task), history of mental illness was obtained using the Symptom Checklist-90, and aggression was assessed with the Novaco Reaction to Provocation Questionnaire. Results Hierarchical multiple regressions were conducted. For overall aggression reactivity, inhibition moderated depression (IR2 = .025, F(3, 224) = 9.977, p < .001, β = -.246, p = .015) and psychoticism (IR2 = .019, F(3, 224) = 8.216, p < .001, β = -.136, p = .031). For reactive aggression subtype, inhibition moderated depression (IR2 = .025, F(3, 224) = 2.679, p = .048, β = .071, p = .017). For proactive aggression subtype, cognitive flexibility moderated anxiety (IR2 = .018, F(3, 224) = 4.731, p = .003, β = -.014, p = .039); and depression (IR2 = .022, F(3, 224) = 3.888, p = .010, β = -.017, p = .025). Conclusions Overall, there was mixed findings for inhibition. On Cambridge Decision Making task, inhibition moderated the predictive relationship of depression on reactive aggression and psychoticism and overall aggression but not for other measures of inhibition. For another inhibition task (Stroop), inhibition did not significantly moderate any mental illness on severity of aggression. Cognitive flexibility moderated the predictive relationships of anxiety and depression on proactive aggression. Findings suggest targeting cognitive flexibility for inmates diagnosed with anxiety depression, and psychosis when treating aggression in a male forensic population.

Rain data are collected all over the world because water is of paramount importance to all human life. WMO has provided standards for collection and standardized data processing of daily rainfall measurements. Currently no such standards are available for gauges with a resolution suitable for urban hydrology, where the resolution in time must not exceed a few minutes. The Group on Urban Rainfall under the International Water Association has made a comparison of national standards by means of a survey of 77 questions sent to 44 countries. The paper discusses the first results of the answers of the survey. Currently tipping bucket gauges are the dominating method of obtaining high resolution rain data, but the numbers of weighing gauges and radar measurements are rapidly growing. It is necessary to try to increase the awareness of documentation of current standards and to agree on standards for measurements and data processing on an international level in the future.

Rainfall-runoff models become increasingly important as efficient instrument for ecological and economic management of rivers. Rainfall is the most relevant information and the most uncertain one to determine for rainfall-runoff models. For rain gauge data the problem is the spatial representativity of the information, whereas for radar data the problem is the volumetric sensitive to several error sources. Within a project of rainfall-runoff simulation based on either raingauge or combined radar and raingauge information, the Landesumweltamt (State Environmental Agency) of North Rhine-Westphalia supported the development of a radar data quality control scheme. Rainfall data quality is the key feature for reliable results from a rainfall-runoff model. The methodology was developed on one year of continuous 5-minute radar data (PF-product of German Weather Service). Radar data was checked by daily statistics, overview statistics, visual inspection, time series analysis, comparison to rain gauge data, adjustment to raingauge data. This quality control concept proved to be efficient for the hydrological data use.

Detection of high-energy neutrinos from distant astrophysical sources will open a new window on the Universe. The detection principle exploits the measurement of Cherenkov light emitted by charged particles resulting from neutrino interactions in the matter containing the telescope. A novel multi-PMT digital optical module (DOM) was developed to contain 31 3-inch photomultiplier tubes (PMTs). In order to maximize the detector sensitivity, each PMT will be surrounded by an expansion cone which collects photons that would otherwise miss the photocathode. Results for various angles of incidence with respect to the PMT surface indicate an increase in collection efficiency by 30% on average for angles up to 45° with respect to the perpendicular. Ray-tracing calculations could reproduce the measurements, allowing to estimate an increase in the overall photocathode sensitivity, integrated over all angles of incidence, by 27% (for a single PMT). Prototype DOMs, being built by the KM3NeT consortium, will be equipped with these expansion cones.© 2013 IOP Publishing Ltd and Sissa Medialab srl.

A recent analysis of the Fermi Large Area Telescope data provided evidence for a high-intensity emission of high-energy gamma rays with a E-2 spectrum from two large areas, spanning 50° above and below the Galactic centre (the "Fermi bubbles"). A hadronic mechanism was proposed for this gamma-ray emission making the Fermi bubbles promising source candidates of high-energy neutrino emission. In this work Monte Carlo simulations regarding the detectability of high-energy neutrinos from the Fermi bubbles with the future multi-km3 neutrino telescope KM3NeT in the Mediterranean Sea are presented. Under the hypothesis that the gamma-ray emission is completely due to hadronic processes, the results indicate that neutrinos from the bubbles could be discovered in about one year of operation, for a neutrino spectrum with a cutoff at 100 TeV and a detector with about 6 km3 of instrumented volume. Fluorescence microscopy was used to examine Papanicolaou-stained smears of sputum and other secretions from the respiratory tract. Under these conditions Charcot-Leyden crystals (CLC) appear as bright yellow-green fluorescing needles. The study was performed to determine the value of this approach for the diagnosis of allergic lung diseases. The time taken to detect the crystals was recorded and the sensitivity of fluorescence microscopy for the detection of CLC was compared with light microscopy of the same samples. The data show that fluorescence microscopy is superior to light microscopy for the detection of CLC. The characteristic needle-shaped crystal can be recognized easily and fragments of crystals could be easily identified. In doubtful cases of allergic lung diseases, fluorescence microscopy may be used to supplement light microscopy for the detection of Charcot-Leyden crystals.

South Africa offers a valuable laboratory to study criminality because of its high levels of crime due to a heterogeneous environment of people, cultures, and economic development. This paper assesses the limitations of conventional practices in combating crime and illustrates the application of innovative artificial intelligence software to assumed unrelated databases - demographic, geographic, socio-economic and others - to find more effective ways to prevent criminal incidents. True unsupervised machine learning artificial intelligence software developed in South Africa provides neural network prediction of criminal incidents by identification of supposedly unrelated variables. Application of the software to find the hidden critical factors leading to bank robberies is illustrated in a specific case, where a robbery at a specific bank branch was predicted with an exceptionally high level of accuracy.

The results and complications using the dorsal 2.4 mm 2.7 mm (AO/ASIF) pi-plate for the treatment of distal radius fractures were evaluated in a prospective study of 42 patients followed up clinically and radiologically and seven patients followed up with telephone call and radiological follow-up for an average time of 12.1 (range 4–32) months in a group of 50 patients with intraarticular distal radial fractures treated consecutively using this method. Twelve complications occurred in 10 patients including two extensor tendon ruptures, two transient cases of CRPS Type 1 (Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy, Algodystrophy), two instances of screw loosening, three cases of posttraumatic carpal tunnel syndrome and three permanent sensory irritations on the dorsum of the hands. Using the AO score, there were 37 successful and 12 tolerable results, with no unsatisfactory outcomes. Using the NYOWR scale, there were 17 very good and 25 good results, with no satisfactory or poor outcomes. These results suggest that this osteosynthesis provides adequate fixation of comminuted distal intraarticular radius fractures with a reasonable incidence of complications.

Wenn kompetente Bypassgefase infarziertes Myokard versorgen, kann dennoch die Flussreserve aufgrund von Veranderungen der Microvaskulatur vermindert sein. Es wird untersucht, inwieweit der Infarktnachweis im myokardialen Versorgungsgebiet eines Bypassgefases die Flussreserve beeinflusst. Methode: Dreisig Bypassgefase wurden mittels Phasenkontrast-Technik (TE 4,2 ms, zeitl. Auflosung 70 ms, Flipwinkel 30°, Venc. 75cm/s, Voxel-Grose 1,4×0,8×6,0 mm3) bei 1,5T (Magnetom Sonata, Siemens AG) untersucht. Die Flussreserve wurde errechnet aus dem Verhaltnis von Flussgeschwindingkeit in Ruhe und wahrend maximaler Adenosin-induzierter Hyperamie (140µg/min/kgKG). Mittels „Late Enhancement“-Konzept wurden Infarktareale identifiziert, und die Bypasse entsprechend in zwei Gruppen geteilt, welche entweder infarziertes oder nicht-infarziertes Myokard versorgen. Signifikante Bypassstenosen wurden mittels Koronarangiographie, Szintigraphie oder Ergometrie ausgeschlossen. Ergebnis: Es wurden 25 der 30 Bypassgefase flussquantifizierend analysiert, 5 Bypassgefase waren verschlossen (n=4) oder nicht beurteilbar (n=1). 12 Bypassgefase versorgten Infarktareale (Gruppe A) und 13 Gefase waren mit Koronarien anastomosiert, welche nicht-infarziertes Myokard versorgen (Gruppe B). Gruppe A bestand aus acht Venengrafts und vier Mammariagrafts, Gruppe B aus acht Venen- und funf Mammaria-Bypassgefasen. Die Flussreserve in Gruppe A war signifikant niedriger als in Gruppe B (Mittel: 1,8±0,76 vs. 2,9±1,2; p=0,01). Schlussfolgerung: Die Flussreserve in kompetenten, Infarktareale versorgenden Bypassgefasen ist vermindert. Dies ist erklarbar durch die gestorte Mikrozirkulation in dem nachgeschalteten, infarzierten Myokard. Um eine zuverlassige und komplette Untersuchung der Bypassfunktion mittels MRT zu gewahrleisten, muss neben der Bestimmung der Flussreserve eine Analyse der Myokardvitalitat durchgefuhrt werden.

The treatment of malignant lymphoma has improved over the past 20 years, but the majority of patients are not cured. New modalities using targeted therapy based on new information in molecular biology and immunology hold promise for better outcomes with less toxicity. We review data on the use of radiolabeled monoclonal antibodies directed against the CD20 antigen on malignant B cells. We discuss the major radionuclides available, iodine 131 ((131)I), tositumomab, and yttrium 90 ((90)Y) ibritumomab tiuxetan (Zevalin; IDEC Pharmaceuticals, San Diego, CA) and present data on new approaches in labeling antibodies that have facilitated their use. Clinical trial data with the yttrium-labeled antibodies are discussed. The use of dosimetry as a means for predicting toxicity is discussed, and the questions of long-term toxicity (late effects) are addressed. These targeted approaches to the treatment of malignancy, and lymphoma in particular, hold great promise.

Crude extracts of Crithidia fasciculata catalyse the formation of 4-mercapto-L-histidine, an intermediate in the biosynthesis of ovothiol A (N1-methyl-4-mercaptohistidine), in the presence of histidine, cysteine, Fe2+ and pyridoxal phosphate. This activity was present in a 35-55% ammonium sulfate fraction that was shown to produce a transsulfuration intermediate in the absence of pyridoxal phosphate. The transsulfuration intermediate was isolated and identified as S-(4'-L-histidyl)-L-cysteine sulfoxide. The synthase activity, partially purified by anion-exchange chromatography, was shown to require oxygen and could be used to synthesize a number of isotopically labeled S-(4'-L-histidyl)-L-cysteine sulfoxides. Sulfoxide lyase activity was partially resolved from the synthase by anion-exchange chromatography. The phenylhydrazone of the product derived from the cysteine moiety of the sulfoxide coeluted with the phenylhydrazone of pyruvate on HPLC, but this assignment could not be confirmed by mass spectral analysis. S-(4'-[14C]L-histidyl)-[U-13C3,15N]L-cysteine sulfoxide was synthesized and converted to products of the lyase reaction in the presence of lactate dehydrogenase and NADH. The 13C-labeled product was identified by 13C-NMR spectroscopy as lactate and the primary product of the lyase reaction is therefore pyruvate. With S-(4'[3H]L-histidyl)-[14C]L-cysteine sulfoxide as the substrate [14C]lactate, [14C]cysteine and [3H]4-mercaptohistidine could be detected as products of the lyase reaction, but the sum of the two thiol species exceeded the amount of sulfoxide substrate used. Evidence is presented that this anomaly was due to the utilization of sulfur from dithiothreitol for the formation of cysteine.

As a first step in a study of the role of the secretion of the supplementary sacculi (buccal secretion) of the dwarf hamster, Phodopus sungorus sungorus, almost complete chemical characterization of the secretion was achieved. The 35 compounds identified include carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, a large number of carboxylic acids (representing the bulk of the organic volatile fraction of the secretion), phenol, 2-piperidone, indole, two long-chain hydroxyesters, cholestrol, desmosterol, and lanosterol. The position of the double bonds in gamma-icosadienyl-gamma-butyrolactone and gamma-henicosadienyl-gamma-butyrolactone could not be determined, and these two compounds remained only partially characterized. Large variations were found in the relative concentrations in which the short-chain carboxylic acids are present in the secretions of individual animals, and although this aspect was not investigated in sufficient detail in the present investigation, the difference in the carboxylic acid profiles of the secretions of individual animals could play a role in individual recognition in this animal.

In a study aimed at the chemical characterization of constituents of the ventral gland secretion of the male dwarf hamster, Phodopus sungorus sungorus, 48 compounds, including saturated alcohols, saturated and unsaturated ketones, saturated and unsaturated straight-chain carboxylic acids, iso- and anteisocarboxylic acids, 3-phenylpropanoic acid, hydroxyesters, 2-piperidone, and some steroids were identified in the secretion. The position of the double bonds in gamma-icosadienyl-gamma-butyrolactone and gamma-henicosadienyl-gamma-butyrolactone, and the position of methylbranching in seven C16-C21 saturated ketones could not be established. Several constituents with typically steroidal mass spectra also remained unidentified. The female dwarf hamster's ventral gland either does not produce secretion or produced so little secretion that it was impossible to collect enough material for analysis.

Approximately 55,400 new cases of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) are diagnosed each year, with the overall prevalence of the disease now estimated to be 243,000. Until recently, treatment alternatives for advanced disease included chemotherapy with or without external beam radiation. Based on the results of several clinical trials, the chimeric monoclonal antibody Rituximab has now been approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration as a treatment for patients with relapsed or refractory, low-grade or follicular, B-cell NHL. Several other monoclonal antibodies in conjugated and unconjugated forms have been evaluated in the treatment of NHL. Ibritumomab, the murine counterpart to Rituximab, radiolabeled with 90Y (Zevalin), is presently being evaluated in clinical trials. The success of radioimmunotherapy is dependent upon the appropriate choice of antibody, isotope, and chelator-linker. The Ibritumomab antibody targets the CD20 antigen. The antibody is covalently bound to the chelator-linker tiuxetan (MX-DTPA), which tightly chelates the isotope 90Y. To date, two Phase I/II Zevalin clinical trials have been completed in patients with low-grade, intermediate-grade, and mantle cell NHL. The overall response rate was 64% in the first trial and 67% in the later trial. Phase II and III trials are ongoing.

e13006 Background: Postoperative radiotherapy for glioma has been shown to improve survival with increased radiation doses. Dose escalation of external beam radiotherapy or brachytherapy is limited by normal brain radionecrosis. Radiolabeled targeting molecules can deliver localized radiation to tumor and reduce normal brain radionecrosis. TM601, or synthetic Chlorotoxin, is a peptide derived from scorpion venom that specifically binds to tumor cells. Here we report dosimetry results of an imaging sub-study of a phase II trial, in which weekly doses of 131I-TM601 were infused into surgically created tumor resection cavities for 3 or 6 weeks. Methods: Five out of 76 patients treated in a phase II trial were imaged after receiving 1, 3, or 6 doses of 40 mCi/0.8 mg 131I-TM601 intracavitarily. For each imaging study, 5 sequential SPECT images (1–168 hour) were registered with MRI to determine the 131I-TM601 radiation dose to the 2-cm tumor cavity margin. Five sequential body scans were also acquired to determine 131I-TM601 radiation dose to extra-cranial organs. Results: 131I-TM601 is a rapidly penetrating and clearing radiolabeled peptide. The median residual activity in the cavity at 7 days post injection was 8.4%. Median radiation dose to the cavity margin was 121 cGy/mCi and ranged 52- 338 cGy/mCi in 5 subjects. The median coefficient of variation (intra-patient inter-fraction) for the 2-cm margin dose was 14.7% and ranged 7.1–18.9%. Median tumor cavity volume was 11.4 mL, and ranged 5.2 - 35.5 mL. There was no observed correlation between the 2-cm margin dose and the cavity volume. Median radiation dose to thyroid, kidneys, red marrow, and body was 8.3, 1.3, 0.4, and 0.6 cGy/mCi, respectively. Conclusions: Radiation dose ratio for 2-cm cavity margin-to-normal tissues was quite high. While intra-patient reproducibility was relatively good, cumulative effect of the residual activity was only meaningful within a week. These results support the multi-dose fractionation scheme for 131I-TM601 to minimize normal tissue toxicity, including radiation necrosis, and extend continuous irradiation to clinical or sub-clinical residual tumor cells after surgery. • Patients with a rising serum carcinoembryonic antigen level and no clinical or roentgenographic evidence of recurrent or metastatic cancer present a treatment dilemma. Eleven such patients, 10 with a previously treated colorectal carcinoma and 1 with a previously treated breast carcinoma, received an injection of the anticarcinoembryonic antigen monoclonal antibody ZCE-025 labeled with the radioisotope indium 111. Nuclear scintigraphy was performed on days 3 and 5 through 7 to detect potential sites of tumor recurrence. The monoclonal antibody scan accurately predicted the presence or absence of occult malignancy in 7 (64%) patients. Second-look laparotomy confirmed the monoclonal antibody scan results in the patients with colorectal cancer, and magnetic resonance imaging confirmed metastatic breast cancer. This study demonstrates that In-ZCE-025 can localize occult carcinoma and may assist the surgeon in facilitating the operative exploration. In-ZCE-025 assisted in the initiation of adjuvant therapy for the patient with breast cancer. ( Arch Surg . 1990;125:866-870)

The identification of four further major constituents of the pedal gland exudate of the bontebok, Damaliscus dorcas dorcas, viz. alpha-terpineol, 2-n-heptylpyridine, m-cresol and (A)-6-dodecen-4-olide and the investigation of the stereochemistry of the double bond in (Z)-6-dodecen-4-olide by means of iterative computer analysis are described. An improved synthesis of this compound is outlined.

The concentration of granulocyte-macrophage colonies in culture (CFU-c) in bone marrow cells was estimated, and bone marrow radionuclide scans were performed in a group of 15 cancer patients prior to bone marrow harvest for autologous transplantation. Preharvest CFU-c counts on iliac-crest bone marrow aspirates correlated very well with CFU-c counts from fresh and frozen-thawed bone marrows. Technetium-99m-sulfur colloid radionuclide scans showed that the distribution of total-body bone marrow and increased peripheral radionuclide uptake correlated with higher preharvest and harvest CFU-c counts. Bone marrow scan results were available in 1 h, whereas CFU-c counts took 14 days to obtain. Bone marrow scans may facilitate the clinical estimation of hemopoietic activity in patients under consideration for autologous bone marrow transplantation.
