Multi-Nucleon Transfer (MNT) reactions have been used for decades as a reaction mechanism, in order to populate excited states in nuclei far from stability and to perform nuclear structure studies. Nevertheless, the development of set-ups involving high acceptance tracking magnetic spectrometers (mainly existing in Europe), coupled with the Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) opens new possibilities, especially if they are used in conjunction with high-intensity stable beams or ISOL RIBs. In this article, we will discuss the capabilities of such set-ups aiming at different goals, including complete information in high-resolution spectroscopy as well as lifetime measurements.

The systematics of the lowest 2+ energies of even-even nuclei, and the B(E2) rates connecting those levels to the ground states, give essential information about the degree of collectivity in various regions of the nuclide chart. The B(E2) rates provide crucial tests of theoretical predictions, such as the quenching of shell structure in neutron-rich nuclei. Measurements of such rates are in progress using multi-nucleon transfer reactions and radioactive ion beams. We have measured the fusion excitation functions for the three systems 48Ca + 116Cd, 118Sn, 120Te, in the relevant energy range from above to below the Coulomb barrier. The magic projectile 48Ca has been chosen in view of its spherical and rigid structure, while the three targets have proton numbers Z=48, 50, 52. We observe that the cross sections are smallest for the target 118Sn, thus indicating the effect on sub-barrier fusion of crossing the major shell closure at Z = 50. This suggests the possibility of using near-barrier fusion reactions of radioactive ion beams with suitable stable targets, as a complementary technique to evidence the low-lying nuclear structure of exotic nuclei, besides well established methods.

International audience; The Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) has been installed at Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro (LNL), Italy. In this installation, AGATA will consist, at the beginning, of 13 AGATA triple clusters (ATCs) with an angular coverage of 1π, and progressively the number of ATCs will increase up to a 2π angular coverage. This setup will exploit both stable and radioactive ion beams delivered by the Tandem–PIAVE-ALPI accelerator complex and the SPES facility. The new implementation of AGATA at LNL will be used in two different configurations, firstly one coupled to the PRISMA large-acceptance magnetic spectrometer and lately a second one at Zero Degrees, along the beam line. These two configurations will allow us to cover a broad physics program, using different reaction mechanisms, such as Coulomb excitation, fusion-evaporation, transfer and fission at energies close to the Coulomb barrier. These setups have been designed to be coupled with a large variety of complementary detectors such as charged particle detectors, neutron detectors, heavy-ion detectors, high-energy γ-ray arrays, cryogenic and gasjet targets and the plunger device for lifetime measurements. We present in this paper the conceptual design, characteristics and performance figures of this implementation of AGATA at LNL.

7 pags., 3 figs., 1 tab., The reduced transition probabilities for the 4_{1}^{+}→2_{1}^{+} and 2_{1}^{+}→0_{1}^{+} transitions in ^{92}Mo and ^{94}Ru and for the 4_{1}^{+}→2_{1}^{+} and 6_{1}^{+}→4_{1}^{+} transitions in ^{90}Zr have been determined in this experiment making use of a multinucleon transfer reaction. These results have been interpreted on the basis of realistic shell-model calculations in the f_{5/2}, p_{3/2}, p_{1/2}, and g_{9/2} proton valence space. Only the combination of extensive lifetime information and large scale shell-model calculations allowed the extent of the seniority conservation in the N=50 g_{9/2} orbital to be understood. A recent experiment on 12C + 24Mg sub-barrier fusion was performed. Standard coupled-channels calculations clearly over-estimated the low energy cross sections and there was indication of a maximum of the astrophysical S factor vs energy. In the present work further measurements have been performed on the same system, and we extended the excitation function to lower energies down to σ ≃ 4 μb, confirming the existence of the hindrance phenomenon. Additional energy points near the barrier were added as well. In agreement with the result of previous experiment, the hindrance energy threshold is observed to correspond to a remarkably large cross section. The present new data allow to better define the S-factor maximum, that is well fitted using two parametrizations of either the hindrance or the adiabatic model. We also performed coupled-channels calculations using a Woods–Saxon potential. Far below the barrier we observe that the coupling strengths decrease and tend to vanish, indeed one-dimensional tunnelling calculations well reproduce the excitation function. Further precise cross section measurements at slightly lower energies are needed to discriminate between the adiabatic and hindrance models. This would give a reliable guidance for the extrapolation to the systems of astrophysical interest, like 12C + 12C and 16O + 16O.

The GALILEO γ -ray spectrometer has been constructed at the Legnaro National Laboratory of INFN (LNL-INFN). It can be coupled to advanced ancillary devices which allows nuclear structure studies employing the variety of in-beam γ -ray spectroscopy methods. Such studies benefit from reactions induced by the intense stable beams delivered by the Tandem-ALPI-PIAVE accelerator complex and by the radioactive beams which will be provided by the SPES facility. In this paper we outline two experiments performed within the experimental campaign at GALILEO coupled to the EUCLIDES Si-ball and the Neutron Wall array. The first one was aimed at spectroscopic studies in A=31 mirror nuclei and the second one at measurements of lifetimes of excited states in nuclei in the vicinity of 100 Sn.

The lifetimes of the low-lying excited states 2(+) and 4(+) have been directly measured in the neutron-deficient Sn-106,Sn-108 isotopes. the nuclei were populated via a deep-inelastic reaction and the lifetime measurement was performed employing a differential plunger device. the emitted gamma rays were detected by the AGATA array, while the reaction products were uniquely identified by the VAMOS++ magnetic spectrometer. Large-Scale Shell-Model calculations with realistic forces indicate that, independently of the pairing content of the interaction, the quadrupole force is dominant in the B(E2; 2(1)(+) -> 0(g.s)(+)) values and it describes well the experimental pattern for Sn104-114 ; the B(E2;(+)(4) -> 2(1)(+)) values, measured here for the first time, depend critically on a delicate pairing-quadrupole balance, disclosed by the very precise results in Sn-108. We present some of the recent experimental results in heavy-ion transfer reactions obtained with the large solid angle magnetic spectrometer PRISMA at energies close to the Coulomb barrier. We focus on a series of experiments that have been carried out to study the nucleon-nucleon correlations for closed shell and superfluid systems. They are discussed together with the newest results concerning the proton transfer channels above and below the Coulomb barrier. The second set of the experiments was performed to study the production mechanism of heavy neutron-rich nuclei and the related effects of secondary processes.

We exploited a multinucleon transfer reactions with the neutron-rich radioactive beams in order to populate the region around the heaviest doubly-magic nucleus (\(^{208}\)Pb), the region of the nuclear landscape which is rather difficult to reach experimentally. We, thus, recently performed an experiment at HIE-ISOLDE, CERN by using the \(^{94}\)Rb beam onto a thick \(^{208}\)Pb target, and by detecting the reaction products in the high-resolution MINIBALL spectrometer coupled to position sensitive CD detector. With the used method we were able to successfully select the transfer channels of interest and their associated \(\gamma \)-rays. Preliminary analysis shows prevalence of the transfer flux in the direction of the neutron rich Pb isotopes, revealing the mechanism of transfer reactions as a competitive tool for the production of heavy neutron-rich nuclei.

Background: The fusion reaction 12C+30Si is a link between heavier cases studied in recent years, and the light heavy-ion systems, e.g., 12C+12C, 16O+16O that have a prominent role in the dynamics of stellar evolution. 12C+30Si fusion itself is not a relevant process for astrophysics, but it is important to establish its behavior below the barrier, where couplings to low-lying collective modes and the hindrance phenomenon may determine the cross sections. The excitation function is presently completely unknown below the barrier for the 12C+30Si reaction, thus no reliable extrapolation into the astrophysical regime for the C+C and O+O cases can be performed. Purpose: Our aim was to carry out a complete measurement of the fusion excitation function of 12C+30Si from well below to above the Coulomb barrier, so as to clear up the consequence of couplings to low-lying states of 30Si, and whether the hindrance effect appears in this relatively light system which has a positive Q value for fusion. This would have consequences for the extrapolated behavior to even lighter systems. Methods: The inverse kinematics was used by sending 30Si beams delivered from the XTU Tandem accelerator of INFN-Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro onto thin 12C (50μg/cm2) targets enriched to 99.9% in mass 12. The fusion evaporation residues (ER) were detected at very forward angles, following beam separation by means of an electrostatic deflector. Angular distributions of ER were measured at Ebeam=45, 59, and 80 MeV, and they were angle integrated to derive total fusion cross sections. Results: The fusion excitation function of 12C+30Si was measured with high statistical accuracy, covering more than five orders of magnitude down to a lowest cross section ≃3μb. The logarithmic slope and the S factor have been extracted and we have convincing phenomenological evidence of the hindrance effect. These results have been compared with the calculations performed within the model that considers a damping of the coupling strength well inside the Coulomb barrier. Conclusions: The experimental data are consistent with the coupled-channels calculations. A better fit is obtained by using the Yukawa-plus-exponential potential and a damping of the coupling strengths inside the barrier. The degree of hindrance is much smaller than the one in heavier systems. Also a phenomenological estimate reproduces quite closely the hindrance threshold for 12C+30Si, so that an extrapolation to the C+C and O+O cases can be reliably performed.

Background: Recent measurements of fusion cross sections for the 28 Si + 28 Si system revealed a rather unsystematic behavior; i.e., they drop faster near the barrier than at lower energies. This was tentatively attributed to the large oblate deformation of 28 Si because coupled-channels (CC) calculations largely underestimate the 28 Si + 28 Si cross sections at low energies, unless a weak imaginary potential is applied, probably simulating the deformation. 30 Si has no permanent deformation and its low-energy excitations are of a vibrational nature. Previous measurements of this system reached only 4 mb, which is not sufficient to obtain information on effects that should show up at lower energies. Purpose: The aim of the present experiment was twofold: (i) to clarify the underlying fusion dynamics by measuring the symmetric case 30 Si + 30 Si in an energy range from around the Coulomb barrier to deep sub-barrier energies, and (ii) to compare the results with the behavior of 28 Si + 28 Si involving two deformed nuclei. Methods: 30 Si beams from the XTU tandem accelerator of the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro of the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare were used, bombarding thin metallic 30 Si targets (50 µ g / cm 2 ) enriched to 99 . 64% in mass 30. An electrostatic beam deflector allowed the detection of fusion evaporation residues (ERs) at very forward angles, and angular distributions of ERs were measured. Results: The excitation function of 30 Si + 30 Si was measured down to the level of a few microbarns. It has a regular shape, at variance with the unusual trend of 28 Si + 28 Si. The extracted logarithmic derivative does not reach the L CS limit at low energies, so that no maximum of the S factor shows up. CC calculations were performed including the low-lying 2 + and 3 - excitations. Conclusions: Using a Woods-Saxon potential the experimental cross sections at low energies are overpredicted, and this is a clear sign of hindrance, while the calculations performed with a M3Y + repulsion potential nicely fit the data at low energies, without the need of an imaginary potential. The comparison with the results for 28 Si + 28 Si strengthens the explanation of the oblate shape of 28 Si being the reason for the irregular behavior of that system.

Both nuclei are populated (i) in Xe136+Pb208 MNT reactions employing the high-resolution Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) coupled to the magnetic spectrometer PRISMA, (ii) in the Xe136+Pt198 MNT reaction employing the GAMMASPHERE spectrometer in combination with the gas-detector array CHICO, and (iii) as an evaporation residue after a Te130(α,xn)Xe134-xn fusion-evaporation reaction employing the HORUS γ-ray array at the University of Cologne. The high-spin level schemes are considerably extended above the Jπ=(7-) and (10+) isomers in Xe132 and above the 11/2- isomer in Xe133. The results are compared to the high-spin systematics of the Z=54 as well as the N=78 and N=79 chains. Furthermore, evidence is found for a long-lived (T1/2â‰1μs) isomer in Xe133 which closes a gap along the N=79 isotones. Shell-model calculations employing the SN100PN and PQM130 effective interactions reproduce the experimental findings and provide guidance to the interpretation of the observed high-spin features.

This contribution reports on the results of measurements of near- and sub-barrier fusion cross sections in the system $^{30}$Si+$^{30}$Si performed at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro of INFN. The $^{30}$Si beam of the XTU Tandem accelerator in the energy range of 47 - 90 MeV, was delivered on a metallic $^{30}$Si target (50 $\mu$g/cm$^{2}$) enriched to 99.64 $\%$ in mass 30. A beam electrostatic deflector was used for the detection of evaporation residues. The excitation function obtained for $^{30}$Si+$^{30}$Si has been compared with the previous data on $^{28}$Si+$^{28}$Si and Coupled Channels (CC) calculations using the M3Y+repulsion potential, taking into account the low lying 2$^+$ and 3$^-$ excitations. Reproducing the low-energy $^{28}$Si+$^{28}$Si excitation function was only possible by using a weak imaginary potential, probably simulating the oblate deformation of this nucleus. On the contrary, the data on $^{30}$Si+$^{30}$Si are nicely reproduced by the CC calculations without any imaginary potential ($^{30}$Si has a spherical shape). The astrophysical S-factor does not show a maximum, so that there is no evidence for hindrance in the measured energy range. The logarithmic derivative of the two excitation functions highlights the difference between the two systems. Even above the barrier the two systems behave differently. This is best seen by comparing the two barrier distributions where the high energy peak observed for $^{28}$Si+$^{28}$Si is not found for $^{30}$Si+$^{30}$Si. This is presumably due to the stronger couplings present in $^{28}$Si and further theoretical analyses are in progress.

The high-spin structures of the N = 81 isotones 135Xe and 137Ba are investigated after multinucleontransfer (MNT) and fusion-evaporation reactions. Both nuclei are populated in (i) 136Xe+238U and (ii) 136Xe+208Pb MNT reactions employing the high-resolution Advanced Gamma Tracking Array (AGATA) coupled to the magnetic spectrometer PRISMA, (iii), in the 136Xe+198Pt MNT reaction employing the -ray array GAMMASPHERE in combination with the gas detector array Chico, and (iv) via a 11B+130Te fusion-evaporation reaction. The high-spin level schemes of 135Xe and 137Ba are considerably extended to higher energies. The 2058-keV (19=2 ) state in 135Xe is identified as an isomer, completing the systematics for the N = 81 isotones. Its half-life is measured to be 8.6(10) ns, corresponding to a transition probability of B(E2; 19=2 ! 15=2 ) = 0:539(69) W.u. Latest shell model calculations considering 132Sn as a closed core reproduce the experimental findings and provide guidance to the interpretation of the new levels. The experimentally deduced reduced quadrupole transition probabilities of the isomeric states are compared to shell-model predictions.

The near- and sub-barrier fusion excitation function has been measured for the system 30 Si+30 Si at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro of INFN, using the 30 Si beam of the XTU Tandem accelerator in the energy range 47 - 90 MeV. A set-up based on a beam electrostatic deflector was used for detecting fusion evaporation residues. The measured cross sections have been compared to previous data on 28 Si+28 Si and Coupled Channels (CC) calculations have been performed using M3Y+repulsion and Woods-Saxon potentials, where the lowlying 2+ and 3− excitations have been included. A weak imaginary potential was found to be necessary to reproduce the low energy 28 Si+28 Si data. This probably simulates the effect of the oblate deformation of this nucleus. On the contrary, 30 Si is a spherical nucleus, 30 Si+30 Si is nicely fit by CC calculations and no imaginary potential is needed. For this system, no maximum shows up for the astrophysical S-factor so that we have no evidence for hindrance, as confirmed by the comparison with CC calculations. The logarithmic derivative of the two symmetric systems highlights their different low energy trend. A difference can also be noted in the two barrier distributions, where the high-energy peak present in 28 Si+28 Si is not observed for 30 Si+30 Si, probably due to the weaker couplings in last case.

During the AGATA campaign at GANIL, the neutron-deficient Sn region was populated via a multi-nucleon transfer reaction in order to directly measure the lifetime of the first excited states with a plunger device, providing complementary information to previous results obtained with Coulomb excitation experiments. The γ -particle coincident measurements, performed by coupling of the PRISMA spectrometer to the large γ arrays (CLARA and AGATA), demonstrate a strong interplay between single-particle and collective degrees of freedom that is pertinent to the reaction dynamics. By using the unique PRISMA performance in terms of both resolution and efficiency, measurements at very low bombarding energies have been performed. Via transfer of nucleon pairs, valuable information on the component responsible for particle correlations has been derived.

Expérience LNL/PRISMA; International audience; The unexplored area of heavy neutron rich nuclei is extremely important for nuclearastrophysics investigations and, in particular, for the understanding of the r-process ofastrophysical nucleogenesis. For the production of heavy neutron rich nuclei located along theneutron closed shell N=126 (probably the last "waiting point" in the r-process of nucleosynthesis)the low-energy multi-nucleon transfer reaction 136Xe+208Pb at Elab=870MeV was explored.Due to the stabilizing eect of the closed neutron shells in both nuclei, N=82 and N=126, andthe rather favorable proton transfer from lead to xenon, the light fragments formed in this processare well bound and the Q-value of the reaction is nearly zero.Measurements were performed with the PRISMA spectrometer in coincidence with an additionaltime-of-flight (ToF) arm on the +20 beam line of the PIAVE-ALPI accelerator in Legnaro, Italy.The PRISMA spectrometer allows identication of the A, Z and velocity of the projectile-likefragments (PLF), while the second arm gives access to the target-like fragments (TLF).Details on the experimental setup and preliminary results are reported.

The level structures of the N = 50 83As, 82Ge, and 81Ga isotones have been investigated by means of multi-nucleon transfer reactions. A first experiment was performed with the CLARA–PRISMA setup to identify these nuclei. A second experiment was carried out with the GASP array in order to deduce the γ-ray coincidence information. The results obtained on the high-spin states of such nuclei are used to test the stability of the N = 50 shell closure in the region of 78Ni ( Z = 28 ). The comparison of the experimental level schemes with the shell-model calculations yields an N = 50 energy gap value of 4.7(3) MeV at Z = 28 . This value, in a good agreement with the prediction of the finite-range liquid-drop model as well as with the recent large-scale shell model calculations, does not support a weakening of the N = 50 shell gap down to Z = 28 .

The fusion excitation function of 48 Ti + 58 Fe has been measured in a wide energy range around the Coulomb barrier, covering 6 orders of magnitude of the cross sections. We present here the preliminary re- sults of this experiment, and a full comparison with the near-by system 58 Ni + 54 Fe where evidence of fusion hindrance shows up at relatively high cross sections. The sub-barrier cross sections of 48 Ti + 58 Fe are much larger than those of 58 Ni + 54 Fe. Significant differences are also observed in the logarithmic derivatives, astro- physical S-factors and fusion barrier distributions. The influence of low-energy nuclear structure on all these trends is pointed out and commented. Coupled-channels calculations using a Woods-Saxon potential are able to reproduce the experimental results for 48 Ti + 58 Fe. The logarithmic derivative of the excitation function is very nicely fit, and no evidence of hindrance is observed down to around 1 μb. The fusion barrier distribution is rather wide, flat and structureless. It is only in qualitative agreement with the calculated distribution.

The revival of transfer reaction studies benefited from the construction of the new generation large solid angle spectrometers, coupled to large γ arrays. The recent results of γ-particle coincident measurements demonstrate a strong interplay between single-particle and collective degrees of freedom that is pertinent to the reaction dynamics. By studies of transfer of pairs, valuable information on the component responsible for particle correlations has been derived.

The heavy-ion magnetic spectrometer PRISMA was recently installed at Laboratori Naz. di Legnaro, in order to exploit the heavy-ion beams of the XTU Tandem-ALPI-PIAVE accelerator complex, with masses up to A≃200 at energies ≃5-10 MeV MeV A.

Measurements of the excitation function for the fusion of (24)Mg+(30)Si (Q=17.89 MeV)have been extended toward lower energies with respect to previous experimental data. The S-factor maximum observed in this large, positive-Q-value system is the most pronounced among such systems studied thus far. The significance and the systematics of an S-factor maximum in systems with positive fusion Q values are discussed. This result would strongly impact the extrapolated cross sections and reaction rates in the carbon and oxygen burnings and, thus, the study of the history of stellar evolution.

An excitation function of one- and two-neutron transfer channels for the ^{60}Ni+^{116}Sn system has been measured with the magnetic spectrometer PRISMA in a wide energy range, from the Coulomb barrier to far below it. The experimental transfer probabilities are well reproduced, for the first time with heavy ions, in absolute values and in slope by microscopic calculations which incorporate nucleon-nucleon pairing correlations.

The heavy ion reaction 22 Ne+208 Pb at 128 MeV of bombarding energy has been studied using the PRISMA-CLARA experimental setup at Legnaro National Laboratories. Elastic, inelastic and one nucleon transfer cross sections have been measured. The experimental results are presented in parallel with the analysis on existing data for the unstable 24 Ne nucleus, from the reaction 24 Ne+208 Pb at 182 MeV (measured at SPIRAL with the VAMOS-EXOGAM setup). The β 2 C charge deformation parameter for both 22 Ne and 24 Ne has been determined by a DWBA analysis of the experimental angular dis- tributions, showing a strong reduction for 24 Ne.

Following the commissioning of the PRISMA large-acceptance spectrometer, installed at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro (LNL), an international nuclear-structure collaboration has started to develop a large γ-ray setup to be installed in the target position of the spectrometer. The array is based on the EUROBALL composite CLOVER detectors. In this contribution the CLOVER detector array is described and its expected performance figures discussed. This new setup, by using the high-intensity heavyion beams provided by the LNL ALPI linac, will push the study of nuclear structure towards moderately neutron-rich nuclei by means of quasi-elastic and deep inelastic reactions.

The heavy-ion reaction 22Ne+208Pb at 128 MeV beam energy has been studied using the PRISMA-CLARA experimental setup at Legnaro National Laboratories. Elastic, inelastic, and one-nucleon transfer differential cross sections are measured and global agreement is obtained with semiclassical and distorted-wave Born approximation (DWBA) calculations. In particular, the angular distribution of the 2+ state of 22Ne is analyzed by DWBA and a similar calculation is performed for the unstable 24Ne nucleus, using existing data from the reaction 24Ne+208Pb at 182 MeV (measured at SPIRAL with the VAMOS-EXOGAM setup). In both cases the DWBA model gives a good reproduction of the experiment, pointing to a strong reduction of the β2(C) charge deformation parameter in 24Ne. This follows the trend predicted for the evolution of the quadrupole deformation along the Ne isotopic chain.

Multinucleon transfer reaction 40Ar+208Pb has been investigated with the PRISMA-CLARA experimental setup in LNL, INFN, Italy. The experimental differential cross sections have been obtained for different transfer channels by measuring more than Δθlab = 20° covered by three angular settings of PRISMA. Results have been compared with the semiclassical calculation GRAZING. Since the understanding of the reaction mechanism depends strongly on the determination of absolute cross section, effect of transport of ions through PRISMA has been studied via a Monte Carlo simulation code.

The transfer reaction for the {sup 116}Sn+{sup 60}Ni system has been studied using the PRISMA magnetic spectrometer at different bombarding energies from above to well below the Coulomb barrier. The experiment has been done in inverse kinematics and light target-like ions have been detected with PRISMA placed at very forward angles. Good mass, nuclear charge and kinetic energy resolutions have been achieved. Sufficient statistics has been accumulated to extract angular distributions for different bombarding energies have been extracted and the response function of the spectrometer has been studied to correct for the aberration due to the transport of the ions in PRISMA. The comparison between the present case and the previously measured {sup 96}Zr+{sup 40}Ca system, superfluid and near closed shells nuclei, respectively, should significantly improve our understanding of nucleon-nucleon correlation properties in multinucleon transfer processes.

The deep inelastic reaction (DIC) 48Ca+64Ni, at an energy approximately 2.5 times above the Coulomb barrier, was studied using the CLARA‐PRISMA setup at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro. Total cross sections and angular distributions, both energy integrated and associated to the population of selected excited states, are measured for the most intense reaction channels. The γ‐decay of the most intense reaction products is also studied. The use of angular distributions and polarization measurements of γ transitions allows to firmly establish spin and parity of excited states. Both reaction and gamma spectroscopy studies demonstrate the relevance of DIC with heavy ions for the investigation of moderately neutron rich systems.

The revival of transfer reaction studies benefited from the construction of the new generation large solid angle spectrometers based on the trajectory reconstruction that reached an unprecedented efficiency and selectivity. The coupling of these spectrometers with large gamma arrays allowed the identification of individual excited states, their population pattern and decay modes via particle- gamma coincidences. In the present paper aspects of fragment-gamma coincidence studies measured with the Prisma-Clara set up in 40Ca+96Zr and 40Ar+208Pb are discussed. In particular, we report about states of particle-phonon character, supporting the idea that the relevant degrees of freedom acting in the reaction dynamics define the final yield distributions.

Binary reactions at energies close to the Coulomb barrier received recently a significant boost thanks to the advent of the large solid angle magnetic spectrometer PRISMA coupled to the gamma array CLARA. In the present paper different aspects of the recent results of nuclear structure and reaction dynamics will be presented, focusing more closely on the reaction mechanism.
