Abstract

As a third world developing country Bangladesh encounters a multiplicity of problems like over population, unplanned urbanization and so on. All these problems act as constraints of sustainable development. This study concentrates how population and urbanization features of Bangladesh challenge its sustainable development and the ways of removing these problems in achieving sustainable development. Proper population and urbanization planning and management accelerate economic growth and ensure sustainable development. But any improper planning and mismanagement in this connection create multidimensional impacts, all of which act as threat to sustainable development. So, to attain sustainable development, proper population and urbanization planning and management are essential.

2. NATURAL GAS OF BANGLADESH: ISSUES ON EXPORT AND EXPLORATION

Abstract

This paper is aimed at analyzing the nature and consequences of involvement of foreign companies in the oil-gas exploration sector of Bangladesh. In this direction, it explores the energy scenario of the country and deals with two very sensitive current time issues like exploration activities in the Sundarbans and gas export. The paper suggests that such activity would endanger the ecology of the forest by proving disastrous to its delicate biodiversity. It also shows that the success rate in case of gas exploration is 3:1 for the whole of Bangladesh which is much higher than the world average of 10:1. Therefore, the term ‘risky venture’ does not go with the case of gas exploration. With respect to gas export the stand of the study is that, excess of production of gas over demand and consequent export of the same will ultimately lead to using up of the existing reserve within a period of only 15 to 20 years. As a result, in the future the country may be found importing gas at much higher prices than she has exported. Given this background, the paper questions the involvement of foreign companies in such activities not to speak of action in block 5. It is argued that no foreign intervention is necessary in the energy sector of the country as the national oil company alone is sufficient to meet up the demand for gas. What is needed is the formulation of an appropriate energy policy to ensure scientific exploration and economic use of this valuable natural resource.

5. Improvement in HSPF's Low-Flow Predictions by Implementation of a Power Law Groundwater Storage-Discharge Relationship

Abstract

We have enhanced the ability of a widely used watershed model, Hydrologic Simulation Program — FORTRAN (HSPF), to predict low flows by reconfiguring the algorithm that simulates groundwater discharge. During dry weather periods, flow in most streams consists primarily of base flow, that is, groundwater discharged from underlying aquifers. In this study, HSPF's groundwater storage-discharge relationship is changed from a linear to a more general nonlinear relationship which takes the form of a power law. The nonlinear algorithm is capable of simulating streamflow recession curves that have been found in some studies to better match observed dry weather hydrographs. The altered version of HSPF is implemented in the Chesapeake Bay Program's Phase 5 Model, an HSPF-based model that simulates nutrient and sediment loads to the Chesapeake Bay, and is tested in the upper Potomac River basin, a 29,950 km2 drainage area that is part of the Bay watershed. The nonlinear relationship improved median Nash-Sutcliffe efficiencies for log daily flows at the model's 45 calibration points. Mean absolute percent error on low-flow days dropped in five major Potomac River tributaries by up to 12 percentage points, and in the Potomac River itself by four percentage points, where low-flow days were defined as days when observed flows were in the lowest 5th percentile range. Percent bias on low-flow days improved by eight percentage points in the Potomac River, from −11 to −3%.

Abstract

We report a measurement of the differential cross section for W boson production as a function of its transverse momentum in proton-antiproton collisions at √s = 1.8 TeV. The data were collected by the DØ experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider during 1994-1995 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 85 pb-1. The results are in good agreement with quantum chromodynamics over the entire range of transverse momentum. © 2001 Elsevier Science B.V.

7. INDUSTRIALIZATION IN BANGLADESH: A CASE OF FAILURE

Abstract

This paper makes a meager attempt to trace the industrialization performance of Bangladesh. While doing so it reveals that aiming at rapid growth of the industrial sector the government has actively intervened into the system and adopted an industrial policy specially emphasizing on import substitution. But the bitter reality is that in spite of various support measures the sector has experienced sluggish rate of growth throughout the past several decades. The study traces that this unexpected performance was a result of limited domestic market and contracting foreign market for industrial products. Moreover, industrialization policies aiming at import-substitution, by making capital relatively cheaper encouraged capital-intensive structures. This is in clear conflict with the employment objective of the government. Hence the paper suggests an outward looking strategy, that is, export-oriented industrialization rather than the inward looking one that is import-substitution.

Abstract

We report on a measurement of the ratio of the differential cross sections for W and Z boson production as a function of transverse momentum in proton-antiproton collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV. This measurement uses data recorded by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron in 1994-1995. It represents the first investigation of a proposal that ratios between W and Z observables can be calculated reliably using perturbative QCD, even when the individual observables are not. Using the ratio of differential cross sections reduces both experimental and theoretical uncertainties, and can therefore provide smaller overall uncertainties in the measured mass and width of the W boson than current methods used at hadron colliders., Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures, to be published in Physics Letters B

Abstract

The reduction of NO to N 2 using NH 3 as a reductant over activated carbons was investigated using an integral reactor system. The effects of varying the gas-phase and surface oxygen concentrations were studied in detail. Surface oxygen was introduced by treating a coconut shell activated carbon with sulphuric acid at 100–300 °C. The type and concentration of surface oxides were investigated by infrared spectroscopy, linear temperature-programmed desorption of surface oxides, and adsorption of reactant gases. Increasing the gas-phase oxygen concentration increased NO conversion significantly. The activity of activated carbon at reaction temperatures > 150 °C was enhanced by sulphuric acid treatment. Sulphuric acid acted as an oxidizing agent and created acidic surface functionalities including carboxyl and carbonyl groups.

A single channel, high precision ionization chamber has been built for monitoring the relative intensity of X-rays in the energy range above 5 keV. It can be used in experiments, such as EXAFS, where simultaneous high precision monitoring of the relative intensity during the actual experiment is required. Abstract

The natural history of patients with coronary artery disease associated with poor left ventricular (LV) function is dismal. This report analyzes the efficacy of myocardial revascularization in this subset of patients with coronary artery disease manifesting severe LV dysfunction on the basis of LV angiography, LV ejection fraction (LVEF), and left ventricular end-diastolic pressure (LVEDP). For the 2 1/2 year period ending November, 1977, 59 consecutive patients with coronary artery disease complicated by severe LV dysfunction underwent aorta-coronary bypass at the University of Western Ontario. All patients had angina refractory to medical therapy. Objective criteria for compromised LV function included the presence of three or more dysfunctional (hypokinetic of akinetic) segments on biplane LV angiography. Eighty-three percent (49/59) of patients had triple-vessel coronary artery disease. The mean LVEF for the series was 0.28 and the mean LVEDP was 18 mm Hg. The duration of follow-up was 24 to 60 months (mean 37 months), with follow-up survival data available on 100% of patients. The hospital mortality was 1.7% (1/59), and there were nine late deaths. The 5 year actuarial survival rate (+/- SEM) was 80% +/- 6%. Of the 44 long-term survivors available for direct assessment, 98% (43/44) report improvement with respect to angina and 66% (29/44) are totally asymptomatic. Eighty percent (28/35) of the long-term survivors under the age of 65 years are currently employed. These results indicate that myocardial revascularization can be performed in patients with severe ischemic LV dysfunction at very low risk and, further, that operation results in a dramatic improvement in survival expectations compared with optimal medical therapy.
