The use of a language-oriented data structure for describing the data required for the real-time control and operation of power systems is demonstrated. The proposed database capitalizes on the fact that power networks and their attributes are hierarchically structured in the operational sense. The fundamental properties of the database are described first, and the steps required to generate such a database through a 'grid data language' are then demonstrated through a practical example. >
