Recent historiography on empire and postcolonialism has highlighted the diverse visual practices and technologies that shaped colonial narratives and knowledge. This article examines how various visual media were used to advance Italy's imperial agenda, drawing on both recent scholarship and original research. Introducing the concept of transmediality and its methodological importance for analyzing colonial cultural and visual practices, the article presents the case of Vittorio Tedesco Zammarano—an explorer, hunter, filmmaker, and writer active in Italian Somalia. Through a close examination of the technologies and cultural practices, this study reflects on how colonial fantasies, desires, and epistemes—particularly those related to hunting and safari—were intertwined with Fascist Italy's colonial ambitions, highlighting broader trans-imperial connections. The identification and implementation of conflict reduction measures are necessary to reduce predator attacks on people and livestock and to minimize human encroachment into predator habitats. We identified potential human–tiger conflict reduction measures and prioritized these measures for Chitwan National Park, Nepal. We identified these measures through a literature review, key informant interviews and a local stakeholder workshop. We prioritized the identified measures using a questionnaire survey of victims of tiger attacks (farmers, forest users and fishers), beneficiaries of tiger conservation (tourist guides, Jeep and elephant safari operators, tour and hotel operators and business operators) and National Park managers. We identified 22 measures (12 preventative, five reactive and five mitigative) as having potential for reducing negative interactions between people and tigers. Amongst these, we identified compensation payments, tiger-proof fences and habitat and prey management as high-priority measures. Conflict reduction priorities also varied amongst stakeholder groups. The victims assigned the highest priority to the construction of tiger-proof fences, whereas beneficiaries identified the management of habitat and prey as their highest priority. Compensation payments were the first preference of National Park managers and were amongst the top two priorities of all stakeholder groups. We recommend the adoption of the identified stakeholder priorities for reducing human–tiger conflict around Chitwan National Park and encourage consideration of the variations in priorities between stakeholder groups during policy development and decision-making. With the advances in percutaneous treatment technologies, the left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO) and the transcatheter mitral valve repair using MitraClip (TMVR) are increasingly being performed today. The SAFARI 2™ guidewire is primarily used during transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI), our group has also been using it during MitraClip and LAAO procedures. Our clinical study aimed to share our data on the safety and effectiveness for the use of the SAFARI 2™ guidewire during MitraClip or LAAO procedures. This study included a total of 1730 patients (948 patients of MitraClip and 782 of LAAO). It was designed as single arm, retrospective, and multicenter between July 2016 and August 2022. SAFARI 2™ guidewire was used exclusively during all the procedures. A total of 1730 patients (male 55.8 %) were included in the study. There was no guidewire-related complications, stroke/transient ischemic attack, bleeding (minor/major/life-threatening), need for cardiac surgery, pneumonia, and vascular dissection/rupture in patients undergoing LAAO. There were 2 device-related pericardial effusions without tamponade. No stroke/transient ischemic attack, bleeding (minor/major/life-threatening), mortality, need for cardiac surgery, pneumonia, guidewire-related complication, pericardial effusion, vascular dissection/rupture, or clip embolization was observed in patients undergoing MitraClip. By taking advantage of its pre-shaped structure, the SAFARI 2™ guidewire seems to offer a reliable and safe device delivery for both MitraClip and LAAO procedures as a regular work horse wire. Our results should be confirmed by larger randomized or prospective trials. • The LAAO and TMVR procedures are increasingly being performed. • Appropriate stiff wire selection in left sided structural heart interventions reduces the complication rate. • The use of SAFARI 2™ as a regular work horse guidewire during MitraClip or LAAO procedures is safe and effective. Safari holidays are now a major part of the African tourist industry and food has become an essential aspect of the adventure. In the late nineteenth century, rugged imperialist explorers shot and consumed many of the large African animals, while after the First World War, luxury safaris for the rich became the norm. First as gentlemen explorers, and then as guides on hunting safaris, 'Great White Hunters' and their pervasive ideology of muscular Christianity prevailed. The period from the late nineteenth through the first part of the twentieth century is looked back upon as the golden age of the safari. Today, many safari tourists are provided with 'fine cuisine', but with accompanying 'nods' to the food of this golden age. At the same time, some safari guides provide reenactments of cooking on an open fire in the bush. Safari lodges and camps have had to cater to an increasing diversity of tourists and to manage the disruption caused by the Covid pandemic. Online advertisements for Safari companies depict carefully organized meals with views across the African savannah where dangerous encounters with wild animals may be envisaged. The companies often promote subtle and nostalgic invocations of the past providing the tourists with a 'back in time tourism'. Taman Safari Indonesia Bogor is a buffer zone for the Mountain Gede Pangrango National Park conservation forest area and is one of the habitats for the Javan surili (Presbytis comata), but there is no research data on wild Javan surili populations. The object of research is to find out how many populations of Javan surili are in the TSI Bogor forest area. The research method used the line transect method by collecting data on the number of individuals, the number of groups, the sex ratio, and the age structure. The research was conducted at four observation locations with a duration of three months, observations were made from 06.00 WIT to 17.00 WIT, and four repetitions were carried out on each observation path, the results obtained were a total of 16 Javan surili individuals found which were divided into one group, and the estimated population density is 0.06 individuals/hectare. The sex composition of male and female Javan surili in the TSI Bogor forest area is 1:6 where there are more female Javan surili than male Javan surili, and for the age structure of the Javan surili the most are in the adult age class with a percentage of 43.75%, juvenile 31.25%, and the percentage of infent by 25%. Through the lens of tiger photography on Instagram, this paper investigates a desire for wilderness without the human footprint; based on a false separation between nature and society, this aspiration finds expression through visual aesthetics on the platform. Protected areas in India are increasing, but this has not halted nature's financialisation. On the contrary, it has enhanced the availability of preserved nature for conversion to capital, mirroring earlier opportunities tied to resource extraction. Using insights from political ecology, I discuss how wildlife as hyper-spectacle on Instagram presents a natural world with the appearance of being untransformed by human intervention and available to tourism. Apartheid South Africa remains an important theme in sport history. The study of South African football has produced a handful of monographs and several research articles. In this body of literature, relatively few studies acknowledge the migratory flows of South African footballers to various levels of British football. Often omitted altogether in these studies is the acknowledgment of the hundreds of British players, coaches, and referees who visited South Africa after the introduction of apartheid in 1948. Many of these football migrants moved to the country for employment opportunities and played the game on a recreational and professional basis. Significant numbers also migrated because of the football opportunities offered in the segregated game. Some of these migrants were involved in the burgeoning black and non-racial game in the country too. From the mid-1950s through to the 1980s, hundreds of British football migrants made South Africa their home for varying lengths of time. In many cases, despite the broader socio-political context, this was too good of a financial opportunity to turn down. To appreciate the complexities of apartheid football, cognizance of the British contribution to upholding, challenging, and overcoming the status quo in South African football is necessary. Using public support to extract information from vast datasets has become a popular method for accurately labeling wildlife data in camera trap (CT) images. However, the increasing demand for volunteer effort lengthens the time interval between data collection and our ability to draw ecological inferences or perform data-driven conservation actions. Artificial intelligence (AI) approaches are currently highly effective for species detection (i.e., whether an image contains animals or not) and labeling common species; however, it performs poorly on species rarely captured in images and those that are highly visually similar to one another. To capitalize on the best of human and AI classifying methods, we developed an integrated CT data pipeline in which AI provides an initial pass on labeling images, but is supervised and validated by humans (i.e., a "human-in-the-loop" approach). To assess classification accuracy gains, we compare the precision of species labels produced by AI and HITL protocols to a "gold standard" (GS) dataset annotated by wildlife experts. The accuracy of the AI method was species-dependent and positively correlated with the number of training images. The combined efforts of HITL led to error rates of less than 10% for 73% of the dataset and lowered the error rates for an additional 23%. For two visually similar species, human input resulted in higher error rates than AI. While integrating humans in the loop increases classification times relative to AI alone, the gains in accuracy suggest that this method is highly valuable for high-volume CT surveys. This article analyses the portrait of the young Inughuit hunter Qalaherriaq, who was brought involuntarily to England from his home in Perlernerit (Cape York) in today's Kalaallit Nunaat (also known as Greenland) with Captain Erasmus Ommanney's expedition vessel in 1851. The portrait's highly unconventional representation, wherein the sitter is shown both en face and in profile, betrays an interest in nineteenth-century racial science and civilizing ideologies. Despite this problematic colonialist content, the double portrait serves as a record for the existence and experience of Qalaherriaq and the participation of Inuit individuals in European expeditions to the Arctic. As this article argues, the portrait is also a visual testimony to Qalaherriaq's agency, adaptability, and deliberate performance in a social environment characterized by ethnocentrism and racism. Bringing in the trail of Inughuit and European sources that this portrait connects to, this article traces the nature and terms of Qalaherriaq's stay in British society. As a decolonizing strategy, we use the method of concurrences to avoid universalizing perspectives on the past. Examining moments of competing truth claims in the European and Arctic sources about or relating to Qalaherriaq, we point to the competing perspectives on the Arctic, exploration, and British imperialism contained in this material. From the safety inside vehicles, Knowsley Safari offers visitors a close-up encounter with captive olive baboons. As exiting vehicles may be contaminated with baboon stool, a comprehensive coprological inspection was conducted to address public health concerns. Baboon stools were obtained from vehicles, and sleeping areas, inclusive of video analysis of baboon–vehicle interactions. A purposely selected 4-day sampling period enabled comparative inspections of 2662 vehicles, with a total of 669 baboon stools examined (371 from vehicles and 298 from sleeping areas). As informed by our pilot study, front-line diagnostic methods were: QUIK-CHEK rapid diagnostic test (RDT) (Giardia and Cryptosporidium), Kato–Katz coproscopy (Trichuris) and charcoal culture (Strongyloides). Some 13.9% of vehicles were contaminated with baboon stool. Prevalence of giardiasis was 37.4% while cryptosporidiosis was <0.01%, however, an absence of faecal cysts by quality control coproscopy, alongside lower than the expected levels of Giardia -specific DNA, judged RDT results as misleading, grossly overestimating prevalence. Prevalence of trichuriasis was 48.0% and strongyloidiasis was 13.7%, a first report of Strongyloides fuelleborni in UK. We advise regular blanket administration(s) of anthelminthics to the colony, exploring pour-on formulations, thereafter, smaller-scale indicator surveys would be adequate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The economic turmoil and restrictions on human movement precipitated by the COVID-19 pandemic severely impacted conservation efforts. Many conservation actors rapidly implemented various adaptive measures in response to the cessation of the nature-based tourism industry, the primary revenue source for much of conservation in sub-Saharan Africa. This timely preliminary study examined the innovative use of virtual safaris, a form of virtual nature-based tourism, as an adaptive response to the crisis. Eight in-depth semi-structured interviews and two written responses from a range of 'conservation operators' provided insight into motivations, benefits, and challenges associated with using virtual safaris. This novel study found three mechanisms through which virtual safaris helped to alleviate the effects of COVID-19 with the potential to develop conservation resilience: 1) as a stopgap measure, 2) for revenue diversification, and 3) as a means of scaling ecosystem services. Virtual safaris provided a critical lifeline for conservation operators, created a new tool to connect with distant audiences, and strengthened relationships with donors. However, this research highlighted a need to re-evaluate the role of sustainable tourism within conservation, with transformative changes essential to enhance future conservation resilience. The article presents the case of a 43-year-old woman who was rushed to a clinic due to uncontrolled hypertension and chest pain to discuss the efficacy of safari wire pacing as a novel technique to percutaneous stent implantation for coarctation of the aorta.
