Observations of groundwater pollutants, such as arsenic or Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), are riddled with left censoring. These measurements have impact on the health and lifestyle of the populace. Left censoring of these spatially correlated observations are usually addressed by applying Gaussian processes (GPs), which have theoretical advantages. However, this comes with a challenging computational complexity of $\mathcal{O}(n^3)$, which is impractical for large datasets. Additionally, a sizable proportion of the data being left-censored creates further bottlenecks, since the likelihood computation now involves an intractable high-dimensional integral of the multivariate Gaussian density. In this article, we tackle these two problems simultaneously by approximating the GP with a Gaussian Markov random field (GMRF) approach that exploits an explicit link between a GP with Mat\'ern correlation function and a GMRF using stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs). We introduce a GMRF-based measurement error into the model, which alleviates the likelihood computation for the censored data, drastically improving the speed of the model while maintaining admirable accuracy. Our approach demonstrates robustness and substantial computational scalability, compared to state-of-the-art methods for censored spatial responses across various simulation settings. Finally, the fit of this fully Bayesian model to the concentration of PFOS in groundwater available at 24,959 sites across California, where 46.62\% responses are censored, produces prediction surface and uncertainty quantification in real time, thereby substantiating the applicability and scalability of the proposed method. Qatar has undergone distinct waves of COVID-19 infections, compounded by the emergence of variants, posing additional complexities. This research uniquely delves into the varied efficacy of existing vaccines and the pivotal role of vaccination timing in the context of COVID-19. Departing from conventional modeling, we introduce two models that account for the impact of vaccines on infections, reinfections, and deaths. Recognizing the intricacy of these models, we use the Bayesian framework and specifically utilize the Metropolis-Hastings Sampler for estimation of model parameters. The study conducts scenario analyses on two models, quantifying the duration during which the healthcare system in Qatar could have potentially been overwhelmed by an influx of new COVID-19 cases surpassing the available hospital beds. Additionally, the research explores similarities in predictive probability distributions of cumulative infections, reinfections, and deaths, employing the Hellinger distance metric. Comparative analysis, employing the Bayes factor, underscores the plausibility of a model assuming a different susceptibility rate to reinfection, as opposed to assuming the same susceptibility rate for both infections and reinfections. Results highlight the adverse outcomes associated with delayed vaccination, emphasizing the efficacy of early vaccination in reducing infections, reinfections, and deaths. Our research advocates prioritizing early vaccination as a key strategy in effectively combating future pandemics. This study contributes vital insights for evidence-based public health interventions, providing clarity on vaccination strategies and reinforcing preparedness for challenges posed by infectious diseases. End-stage renal disease has many adverse complications associated with it leading to 20-50% higher mortality rates in people than those without the disease. This makes it one of the leading causes of death in the United States. This article analyzes the incidence of end-stage renal disease in 2019 in Florida using a multilevel Conditional Autoregressive model under a Bayesian framework at both the Zip Code Tabulation Area and facility levels. The effects of some social factors and indicators of health on the standardized hospitalization ratio of dialysis facilities are quantified. Additionally, as kidney research studies are posed with a great burden due to missing data, we introduce a novel method to impute missing spatial data using spatial state space modeling. The outcomes of this study offer potentially valuable insights for policymakers aiming to develop strategies that enhance healthcare and service quality for disadvantaged populations.

The Covid-19 outbreak of 2020 has required many governments to develop and adopt mathematical-statistical models of the pandemic for policy and planning purposes. To this end, this work provides a tutorial on building a compartmental model using Susceptible, Exposed, Infected, Recovered, Deaths and Vaccinated (SEIRDV) status through time. The proposed model uses interventions to quantify the impact of various government attempts made to slow the spread of the virus. Furthermore, a vaccination parameter is also incorporated in the model, which is inactive until the time the vaccine is deployed. A Bayesian framework is utilized to perform both parameter estimation and prediction. Predictions are made to determine when the peak Active Infections occur. We provide inferential frameworks for assessing the effects of government interventions on the dynamic progression of the pandemic, including the impact of vaccination. In this study, we examine a set of primary data collected from 484 students enrolled in a large public university in the Mid-Atlantic United States region during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. The data, called Ties data, included students' demographic and support network information. The support network data comprised of information that highlighted the type of support, (i.e. emotional or educational; routine or intense). Using this data set, models for predicting students' academic achievement, quantified by their self-reported GPA, were created using Chi-Square Automatic Interaction Detection (CHAID), a decision tree algorithm, and cforest, a random forest algorithm that uses conditional inference trees. We compare the methods' accuracy and variation in the set of important variables suggested by each algorithm. Each algorithm found different variables important for different student demographics with some overlap. For White students, different types of educational support were important in predicting academic achievement, while for non-White students, different types of emotional support were important in predicting academic achievement. The presence of differing types of routine support were important in predicting academic achievement for cisgender women, while differing types of intense support were important in predicting academic achievement for cisgender men.

Arsenic (As) and other toxic elements contamination of groundwater in Bangladesh poses a major threat to millions of people on a daily basis. Understanding complex relationships between arsenic and other elements can provide useful insights for mitigating arsenic poisoning in drinking water and requires multivariate modeling of the elements. However, environmental monitoring of such contaminants often involves a substantial proportion of left-censored observations falling below a minimum detection limit (MDL). This problem motivates us to propose a multivariate spatial Bayesian model for left-censored data for investigating the abundance of arsenic in Bangladesh groundwater and for creating spatial maps of the contaminants. Inference about the model parameters is drawn using an adaptive Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) sampling. The computation time for the proposed model is of the same order as a multivariate Gaussian process model that does not impute the censored values. The proposed method is applied to the arsenic contamination dataset made available by the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB). Spatial maps of arsenic, barium (Ba), and calcium (Ca) concentrations in groundwater are prepared using the posterior predictive means calculated on a fine lattice over Bangladesh. Our results indicate that Chittagong and Dhaka divisions suffer from excessive concentrations of arsenic and only the divisions of Rajshahi and Rangpur have safe drinking water based on recommendations by the World Health Organization (WHO).

During the current COVID-19 pandemic, decision makers are tasked with implementing and evaluating strategies for both treatment and disease prevention. In order to make effective decisions, they need to simultaneously monitor various attributes of the pandemic such as transmission rate and infection rate for disease prevention, recovery rate which indicates treatment effectiveness as well as the mortality rate and others. This work presents a technique for monitoring the pandemic by employing an Susceptible, Exposed, Infected, Recovered Death model regularly estimated by an augmented particle Markov chain Monte Carlo scheme in which the posterior distribution samples are monitored via Multivariate Exponentially Weighted Average process monitoring. This is illustrated on the COVID-19 data for the State of Qatar.

Geostationary satellites collect high-resolution weather data comprising a series of images which can be used to estimate wind speed and direction at different altitudes. The Derived Motion Winds (DMW) Algorithm is commonly used to process these data and estimate atmospheric winds by tracking features in images taken by the GOES-R series of the NOAA geostationary meteorological satellites. However, the wind estimates from the DMW Algorithm are sparse and do not come with uncertainty measures. This motivates us to statistically model wind motions as a spatial process drifting in time. We propose a covariance function that depends on spatial and temporal lags and a drift parameter to capture the wind speed and wind direction. We estimate the parameters by local maximum likelihood. Our method allows us to compute standard errors of the estimates, enabling spatial smoothing of the estimates using a Gaussian kernel weighted by the inverses of the estimated variances. We conduct extensive simulation studies to determine the situations where our method performs well. The proposed method is applied to the GOES-15 brightness temperature data over Colorado and reduces prediction error of brightness temperature compared to the DMW Algorithm.

Analysis of geostatistical data is often based on the assumption that the spatial random field is isotropic. This assumption, if erroneous, can adversely affect model predictions and statistical inference. Nowadays many applications consider data over the entire globe and hence it is necessary to check the assumption of isotropy on a sphere. In this paper, a test for spatial isotropy on a sphere is proposed. The data are first projected onto the set of spherical harmonic functions. Under isotropy, the spherical harmonic coefficients are uncorrelated whereas they are correlated if the underlying fields are not isotropic. This motivates a test based on the sample correlation matrix of the spherical harmonic coefficients. In particular, we use the largest eigenvalue of the sample correlation matrix as the test statistic. Extensive simulations are conducted to assess the Type I errors of the test under different scenarios. We show how temporal correlation affects the test and provide a method for handling temporal correlation. We also gauge the power of the test as we move away from isotropy. The method is applied to the near-surface air temperature data which is part of the HadCM3 model output. Although we do not expect global temperature fields to be isotropic, we propose several anisotropic models with increasing complexity, each of which has an isotropic process as model component and we apply the test to the isotropic component in a sequence of such models as a method of determining how well the models capture the anisotropy in the fields.
