Questo contributo si concentra sulla valle alpina del Fersina nell'Italia nord-orientale. Durante il periodo studiato, la valle era isolata da barriere linguistiche e geografiche, con la coabitazione di due gruppi linguistici separati - italiani e tedeschi. Dopo aver esplorato i principali indicatori demografici relativi all'intera valle, abbiamo considerato il regime nuziale e di fecondità della comunità di lingua tedesca, applicando la tecnica di ricostruzione delle famiglie. L'analisi ha mostrato come il livello di sopravvivenza complessivo della valle risultasse superiore al livello standard italiano nella stessa epoca. Inoltre, è stata dimostrata l'esistenza di un'età relativamente elevata al matrimonio e un basso livello di fecondità, confermando l'esistenza di un regime demografico a bassa pressione. Questi risultati preliminari possono essere inseriti nel più ampio quadro relativo ai meccanismi regolatori della crescita della popolazione, che storicamente caratterizzavano le aree montane con risorse limitate. This contribution focuses on the Alpine Valley of the Fersina River in North-eastern Italy. During the period under study, the valley was isolated by linguistic and geographical barriers, while two separated linguistic groups - Italian and German - cohabited. After exploring the main demographic indicators related to the entire valley, we considered the marriage and the fertility pattern of the German-speaking community, applying the family reconstitution technique. The analysis showed that the level of overall survival of the valley was higher than the Italian standard. Furthermore, relatively high age at marriage and low fertility level were demonstrated, confirming the existence of a low pressure demographic regime. These preliminary results can be placed into the wider context of the regulatory mechanisms of population growth, which has historically characterized the mountain's areas with limited resources.

This paper studies contextual effects on fertility at the onset of fertility decline in Sweden. We argue that the community exerts an influence on fertility when individuals belonging to a certain community are more similar to one another (within-area) in their reproductive behaviour than individuals living in another community (between-area). Our hypotheses are that community had a strong influence in the past but that it decreased over time as more individualistic values grew in importance. We expect that the community exerted a greater impact in the low socioeconomic groups as the elite were less constrained by proximity and, therefore, more exposed to new ideas crossing community borders. Using micro-census data from 1880, 1890, and 1900, we use multilevel analysis to estimate measures of intra-class correlation within areas. We measure net fertility by the number of own children under five living in the household to currently married women with their spouses present. Parish is used as proxy for community. Our results indicate that despite average differences in fertility across parishes, the correlation between individuals belonging to the same community is less than 2.5%, that is, only a negligible share of the number of children observed is attributable to true community effects. Contrary to our expectation, we do not find any substantial change over time. However, as expected, community has a greater impact in the low socioeconomic groups. Our findings suggest that it is who you are rather than where you live which explains fertility behaviour during the initial stages of the transition.

We study the social mobility of women by looking at the connection between migration and marriage outcomes using complete count census data for Sweden. The censuses 1880-1900 have been linked at the individual level, enabling us to follow 100,000 women from their parental home to their new marital household. Marriage market imbalances were not an important push factor for migration but we find a strong association between migration distance and marriage outcomes, both in terms of overall marriage probabilities and in terms of partner selection. These results highlight the importance of migration for women’s social mobility during industrialization.

Variations in sex ratios at birth is still an active research field and several studies in the last decades have focused on this topic. In this article, studies on the main determinant of long- and short-term trends are briefly reviewed, taking into account findings and results from different kinds of disciplines. In his early studies, Corrado Gini concluded that the human sex ratio at birth was universally stable, without significant fluctuations across time and space. However, in the last decades several authors have directly challenged these conclusions. Therefore, after summarizing the results of Gini’s research on the historical trends of the sex ratio at birth, a brief review focuses on the analyses of contemporary trends. The main determinants of the variations of the sex ratio at birth in time and space mentioned in the literature and the corresponding theoretical explanations are summarized. The main purpose of this paper is to define a statistical method to model mortality rates by age and sex for provincial areas in Italy. In a preliminary descriptive analysis, we demonstrate the existence of specific spatio-temporal patterns. Thus, we propose a hierarchical Bayesian model that allows area-level estimates to borrow strength from each other by exploiting spatial association of provincial mortality rates and taking into account temporal correlation. As a result, it appears that model based estimates are less variable than direct estimates.

Il declino della mortalità infantile avvenuto in Italia tra il XX e il XIX secolo è già stato ampiamente studiato nelle sue linee essenziali. Utilizzando prevalentemente dati aggregati, numerosi studi hanno mostrato come l’evoluzione della sopravvivenza infantile si sia differenziata in funzione del contesto ambientale e socio-economico di riferimento. Lo scopo di questo lavoro è quello di esplorare le determinanti della mortalità infantile nel comune di Granarolo dall’Unità d’Italia agli anni precedenti la seconda guerra mondiale, utilizzando i dati individuali provenienti dai Registri di Stato Civile del Comune.

Lo scopo del lavoro è verificare gli effetti delle condizioni climatiche invernali sulla mortalità neonatale, prendendo in considerazione l’area rurale confinante con la città di Bologna durante il secolo diciannovesimo. Studi precedenti hanno infatti dimostrato come, in alcune zone dell’Italia settentrionale, la stagione di nascita e le temperature invernali rappresentassero un’importante determinante della mortalità infantile. Adottando specifici modelli di rischio, si è valutata la probabilità di decesso del neonato entro 7, 15 e 30 giorni dalla nascita in funzione della temperatura e/o della stagione di nascita, tenendo sotto controllo le caratteristiche della madre (età, parità, altri bambini deceduti) e dell'aggregato domestico (professione capofamiglia e struttura della famiglia) ed altre variabili di livello macro come epidemie, tasso di mortalità, prezzi del grano nell’anno precedente (durante la gestazione).

Questo lavoro si sviluppa intorno al tema della mobilitá turistica in Sardegna, della geografia dei flussi esterni ed interni ed, in generale, delle relazioni che legano i turisti al territorio.

The touristic phenomenon represents a more and more relevant factor for the social and economic development in Sardinia. For this reason, researchers and policy makers need correct data about touristic flows. In this paper, we propose a method to estimate correctly tourist flows and to provide exact measures of the tourist arrivals. In Italy, the National Institute of Statistics measures tourist flows by organizing direct, total and periodic surveys based on registrations of customers in touristic structures like hotels, camping, etc. However the official data are significant underestimated. As a matter of fact, the official source considers only the official tourist flow, since the real flow includes also a non-observed component. This hidden segment mainly comprises tourists in second homes or summer houses that official agencies generally do not take into account. The aim of this study is to measure this hidden component of the Sardinian tourism and to identify the most relevant features of these tourists. The data of the analysis was collected in 2009 and 2010 by using a survey technique based on the Time Location Sampling methodology. This survey has been carried out in the ports and the airports of the Sardinia Island, interviewing tourist before leave. A specific question registered the kind of accommodation in which tourists spent their holidays. By using specific sampling techniques, we will estimate the proportion of tourists that are not included in the official data. These proportions will be provided according to different typologies of tourists (e.g. Italian and foreign tourists) in order to identify which kind of tourists are more underestimated. Basing on some preliminary results, we can say that the hidden component of tourism in Sardinia represents almost half of the official estimations. Moreover, this phenomenon seems to be mainly related to the second houses and the houses for vacations.

Al fine di esplorare le relazioni di breve periodo tra variabili demografiche ed economiche in Piemonte, si é utilizzata una specifica tecnica econometrica basata su modelli di regressione con variabili ritardate. Lo scopo di questa analisi è stato quello di mettere in evidenza l’esistenza di freni malthusiani di breve termine e valutarne l'intensità. Direzione, ampiezza e struttura temporale degli effetti dei prezzi dei cereali su mortalità, fecondità e nuzialità sono stati stimati per tre centri situati nell’area subalpina (Carmagnola, Moncalieri e San Damiano) e per il complesso della regione Piemonte tra XVII e XIX secolo. Si é mostrato come l’effetto di un rialzo dei prezzi agisca con un ritardato di un anno sui livelli di mortalità. Inoltre é stata messo in evidenza come anche la fecondità risenta delle fluttuazioni dei prezzi, confermando l’esistenza dei freni “preventivi” teorizzati dal Malthus.

There has recently been a renewed interest in the socioeconomic aspects of reproduction during the great fertility decline. While most previous work on the European fertility decline has been macro-oriented, using various kinds of aggregate data picturing of the demographic processes at regional or national level, much less has been done using micro-level data, and specifically looking at patterns across social groups. In this paper we look at the association between socioeconomic status and net fertility in Sweden’s fertility transition using micro-level census data covering the entire population around 1900. The data contain information on number of children by age, occupation of the mother and father, place of residence and household context. Coding occupations in HISCO and classifying them into a social class scheme (HISCLASS) enables us to study the impact of socioeconomic status on number of children under 5, controlling also for spatial variations in social stratification. Our results indicate that the crude socioeconomic differentials in net fertility were substantial in Sweden immediately before 1900, with the elite and the upper middle classes having considerably lower marital child-woman ratios than the working classes. However, these crude differences were partly explained by compositional differences between classes according to age, community context and spatial heterogeneity. Nonetheless, even when controlling for individual and household variables as well as parish level fixed effects, the elite group had considerably lower net fertility than the other groups.

La pluralisation des parcours de vie influence beaucoup les relations entre les individus, surtout dans les pays développés. Les relations a l’intérieur de la famille et entre les générations éprouvent aussi les conséquences de ce fait pendant les deux phases de la vie dans lesquelles la solidarité est particulièrement importante : celle de la sortie des jeunes da la famille et celle de la vieillesse. Dans les pays, comme l’Italie, caractérisés soit par des hautes niveau de vieillissement soit par des fortes liens familiales, la solidarité familial devienne un élément très important dans les phases terminales de la vie, surtout là ou le welfare est pratiquement absent. L’objectif principal du travail est l’analyse des trajectoires de vie de la population âgée en termes des formes familiales : c'est-à-dire les transformation des structures familiales concomitamment aux événements typiques de la vieillesse : la sorties de la famille des tous les fils, l’invalidité ou le décès du partenaire, etc. Par effet de fortes liens familiales in Italie nous nous attendons de trouver des transformation familiales qui permettent une majeur proximité aux maisons des fils , ou qui comportent l’unification des maisons, ou bien, si n’existent pas des parents, qui conduisent vers les structures d’assistance publique. Nous nous attendons aussi de trouver une plus fortes solidarité intergénérationnelle dans les territoires qui ne sont pas métropolitaines et qui sont plus loin des grandes villes. Nous analyserons in optique longitudinale les donnés des registres d’état civil pour suivre, d’année en année, les transformation des familles dans lesquelles la population âgée vive. Le territoire objet de l’analyse est formé par les communes de la province de Bologne (de la région Emilia Romagna, qui est situé dans le nord de l’Italie). Pour la population qui habite ce territoire on dispose des donnés des registres d’état civil pour tous les années à partir du 1999.

Il volume affronta la questione della dimensione ‘reale’ del fenomeno turistico in Sardegna e offre un quadro completo del turismo esterno (incoming) che gravita su questo territorio. Viene inoltre approfondito il tema della domanda turistica nazionale ed internazionale sulla base di un sondaggio diretto effettuato sui turisti in partenza dai principali porti/aeroporti della regione: si indagano vari aspetti, come la diversità delle motivazioni, la durata della vacanza, la geografia del fenomeno e la mobilità, la soddisfazione complessiva e i livelli di spesa, i profili e le tipologie di turista.

The study takes into account the socioeconomic differences in the reproductive behavior in the north-eastern suburban area of Bologna from the 1820s to the 1930s, considering two rural parishes during the whole nineteenth century and another sample of parishes bordering Bologna during the early decades of the twentieth century. Consequently the period in question continues up to the onset of the fertility decline, while important social, economic and demographic transformations were about to take place. Indeed, during the 1930s, the fertility decline in Italy was so evident and the national birth rates showed such evident signs of reduction that the Fascist regime promoted a policy to increase the number of births (Treves 2001).

Nel presente lavoro, si delinea una sintesi della dinamica migratoria in provincia di Bologna dal 1861 al 2001. Il tentativo è quello di offrire un quadro riassuntivo della fitta trama di flussi e scambi migratori avvenuti tra le varie zone del territorio provinciale (città capoluogo e comuni satelliti della prima cintura, pianura, zona appenninica collinare e montana). In particolare, si cerca di chiarire il ruolo giocato dalla componente migratoria nella crescita della città capoluogo e nel declino demografico di alcune aree. Fino agli anni Trenta il capoluogo ha assorbito il surplus demografico prodotto dalle campagne circostanti, nutrendosi di sempre più consistenti flussi migratori provenienti dall’esterno dei confini provinciali; dopo gli anni Trenta, la crescita della città subisce una ulteriore accelerazione, per poi sperimentare il definitivo decollo negli anni Cinquanta. Per tutto l’Ottocento e fino ancora agli anni Venti del Novecento, la popolazione rurale delle montagne bolognesi cresce con moderati tassi di incremento, ma è con gli anni Trenta che il passivo migratorio diventa sempre più consistente assumendo poi negli anni Cinquanta le dimensioni di una vera e proprio emorragia di popolazione.

La tipologie dei veicoli coinvolti, la natura degli incidenti e le circostanze più frequenti. Il profilo delle vittime e gli utenti deboli. Le strade che registrano il maggior numero di incidenti.
