Abstract

Developing energy-efficient software solutions is a tedious task. We need both, the awareness that energy-efficiency plays a key role in modern software development and the tools and techniques to support stakeholders involved in the software development lifecycle. So, we present the MANAi plugin which helps to make energy consumption of unit test methods explicit by providing visual feedback as a plugin to the Integrated Development Environment (IDE)IntelliJ. Our tool is intended to bring software energy consumption into the limelight as an important non-functional quality aspect in software development. Furthermore, with MANAi we provide a tool that eases the process of software energy experiments for a broad range of users from academia to industry.

2. Mining API Interactions to Analyze Software Revisions for the Evolution of Energy Consumption

Abstract

With the widespread use and adoption of mobile platforms like Android a new software quality concern has emerged -- energy consumption. However, developing energy-efficient software and applications requires knowledge and likewise proper tooling to support mobile developers. To this aim, we present an approach to examine the energy evolution of software revisions based on their API interactions. The approach stems from the assumption that the utilization of an API has direct implications on the energy being consumed during runtime. Based on an empirical evaluation, we show initial results that API interactions serve as a flexible, lightweight, and effective way to compare software revisions regarding their energy evolution. Given our initial results we envision that in future using our approach mobile developers will be able to gain insights on the energy implications of changes in source code in the course of the software development life-cycle.

Abstract

Recently, the field of Metal-Insulator-Transition (MIT) materials has emerged as an unconventional solution for novel energy efficient electronic functions, such as steep slope subthermionic switches, neuromorphic hardware, reconfigurable radiofrequency functions, new types of sensors, teraherz and optoelectronic devices. Designing radiofrequency (RF) electronic circuits with a MIT material like vanadium dioxide, VO2, requires the understanding of its physics and appropriate models and tools, with predictive capability over large range of frequency (1-100GHz). Here, we develop 3D Smith charts for devices and circuits having complex frequency dependences, like the ones resulting by the use of MIT materials. The novel foundation of a 3D Smith chart involves here the geometrical fundamental notions of oriented curvature and variable homothety in order to clarify first theoretical inconsistencies in Foster and Non Foster circuits, where the driving point impedances exhibit mixed clockwise and counter-clockwise frequency dependent paths on the Smith chart as frequency increases. We show here the unique visualization capability of a 3D Smith chart, which allows to quantify orientation over variable frequency. The new 3D Smith chart is applied as a 3D multi-parameter modelling and design environment for the complex case of Metal-Insulator-Transition (MIT) materials where their permittivity is dependent on the frequency. In this work, we apply 3D Smith charts to on Vanadium Dioxide (VO2) reconfigurable Peano inductors. We report fabricated inductors with record quality factors using VO2 phase transition to program multiple tuning states, operating in the range 4 GHz to 10 GHz. Finally, we fabricate new Peano curves filters used to extract the frequency-dependent dielectric constant of VO2 within 1 GHz-50 GHz for the accurate design of RF electronic applications with phase change materials, Comment: 36 pages, 13 article pages, 23 supplementary pages, 5 main article figures, 32 additional figures

43. Analysis of setups and investment processes within university affiliated venture capitals : A descriptive multi-case study

Abstract

With the increasing importance of the third mission of universities, namely the commercialisation of science and research, universities have established various mechanisms such as technology transfer offices, business incubators and more. Since many investors tend not to invest in university spin-offs and start-ups due to the risk associated with their early stage, universities have established their own investment units, referred to as university-affiliated venture capital, to provide funding for university spin-offs and start-ups. As there is little academic research on the structure and functioning of these investment units, this paper contributes to this research by analysing the structure and investment process of university-affiliated venture capitals. For this purpose, 10 investment units in Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden were analysed. Among the key findings of this work is the recognition that UVCs essentially look for the abilities ofthe founders and the possibility of developing them into an effective team when selecting ventures. Inaddition, the financing instruments offered, and the ticket sizes of the investment units could be identified. While many UVCs use both equity investment and convertible loans, there is a slight bias towards convertible loans as the potential target companies are at such an early stage that valuations are very difficult to conduct and the UVCs have limited resources. Ticket sizes generally vary between 25,000 and 100,000 thousand euros., Med den ökande betydelsen av universitetens tredje uppgift, nämligen kommersialisering av vetenskap och forskning, har universiteten inrättat olika mekanismer som tekniköverföringskontor och företagsinkubatorer. Eftersom många investerare tenderar att inte investera i universitetsavknoppningar och nystartade företag på grund av den risk som är förknippad med deras tidiga skede, har universiteten inrättat sina egna investeringsenheter, så kallat universitetsanknutet riskkapital (UVC), för att tillhandahålla finansiering för universitetsavknoppningar och nystartade företag. Eftersom det inte finns så mycket akademisk forskning om strukturen och funktionen hos dessa investeringsenheter, bidrar denna uppsats till denna forskning genom att analysera strukturen och investeringsprocessen för universitetsanknutna riskkapitalbolag. För detta ändamål analyserades tio investeringsenheter; i Danmark, Finland, Nederländerna, Norge och Sverige. Bland de viktigaste resultaten av detta arbete finns insikten att UVC:er i huvudsak letar efter grundarnas förmågor och möjligheten att utveckla dem till ett effektivt team när de väljer ut företag. Dessutom kunde de finansieringsinstrument som erbjuds och investeringsstorlekarna identifieras. Även om många UVC:er använder både kapitalinvesteringar och konvertibla lån, finns det en viss övervikt för konvertibla lån eftersom de potentiella målföretagen befinner sig i ett så tidigt skede att värderingar är mycket svåra att genomföra och UVC:er har begränsade resurser. Investeringsstorlekarna varierar i allmänhet mellan 25 000 och 100 000 tusen euro.
