Introduction: The free and cued selective reminding test (FCSR) assesses pathological forgetfulness (recalling of 16 items encoded by a visuo-verbal semantic strategy), distinguishing encoding from retrieval deficits. Immediate free recall (FRimm) is a predictor of learning capacity, which declines with age and increases according to education level. Objective: To test the effects of age and education on the ecrt subscores, focusing on FRimm. Method: 104 independent volunteers with normal Mini-Mental State scores were grouped as “adults” (N = 32; age: 33 ± 11 years; education: 14 ± 2 years) and “elders” (N = 72; age: 72 ± 7 years; education: 5 ± 5 years). The association between FRimm and age and education was estimated by multiple binary logistic regression and the results presented as the odds ratio (OR), with 95% confidence intervals. Results: The chance of decline in performance was 22% (p ≤ 0,01) as the age increased, while that the subjects with more years of education have 31% less chance of decline in performance (p ≤ 0,05) in the FRimm. Conclusion: The normal ageing was associated to a decline in the learning process, while the education level had a protective effect against this decline.

This study examined score and classification differences between the Buschke Selective Reminding Test (SRT) and the California Verbal Learning Test - Second Edition (CVLT-II) in a TBI sample. Seventy-nine participants with traumatic brain injury (TBI) were included and were comprised of 49 mild TBI, 11 moderate TBI, and 14 severe TBI. The majority of participants with mild TBI were involved in litigation. Scores were compared between the CVLT-II and SRT on the total sample and after segregating TBI severity. Correlations between the SRT and CVLT-II were variable (r = .23 to .72). Total List score was lower on the SRT across all levels of TBI severity (p < .006). Learning score was lower on the SRT in mild and severe TBI groups (p < .006). Long delay free recall score was lower on the SRT in mild TBI group only (p < .006). Across TBI severity, lower scores were found on the CVLT-II between severe and mild TBI (p = .04). Scores on the SRT did not differ between TBI severities. The two tests appear to provide different clinical interpretations in a TBI sample. Results may be due to features of the normative data, test procedures, and/or word lists. The Verbal Selective Reminding Test (VSRT) is a widely used measure to evaluate verbal learning and memory associated with different neurological conditions. The goal of this study was to extend the use of the six-version trial of this test to the Portuguese population, through the production of adjusted normative data. The normative sample consists of 309 healthy participants aged between 20 and 70, with an educational level ranging from 4 to 23 years of formal. Gender, education, and age effects were explored. In addition, the reliability of the test was also analyzed and normative data produced. Gender, age, and education were significantly associated with VSRT performance. The test revealed excellent inter-rater reliability and good test-retest reliability. The normative data is presented as a regression-based formula to adjust test scores for gender, education and age. The correspondence between adjusted scores and percentile distribution was calculated. Since a test with appropriate norms is fundamental to an appropriate assessment of memory functioning, the normative data produced in this study improves the applicability of VRST for both clinical and research proposes in the Portuguese population. The Selective Reminding Test (SRT) and the Free and Cued Selective Reminding Test (FCSRT) are multitrial memory tests that use a common “selective reminding” paradigm that aims to facilitate learning by presenting only the missing words from the previous recall trial. While in the FCSRT semantic cues are provided to elicit recall, in the SRT, participants are merely reminded of the missing items by repeating them. These tests have been used to assess age-related memory changes and to predict dementia. The performance of healthy elders on these tests has been compared before, and results have shown that twice as many words were retrieved from long-term memory in the FCSRT compared with the SRT. In this study, we compared the tests’ properties and their accuracy in discriminating amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI;n = 20) from Alzheimer disease (AD;n = 18). Patients with AD performed significantly worse than patients with aMCI on both tests. The percentage of items recalled during the learning trials was significantly higher for the FCSRT in both groups, and a higher number of items were later retrieved, showing the benefit of category cueing. Our key finding was that the FCSRT showed higher accuracy in discriminating patients with aMCI from those with AD. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

The sensitivity and specificity of the Selective Reminding Test (SRT) Delayed Recall, Wechsler Memory Scale (WMS) Logical Memory, the Boston Naming Test (BNT), and two nonverbal memory measures for detecting lateralized dysfunction in association with side of seizure focus was examined in a sample of 143 patients with left or right temporal-lobe epilepsy (TLE). Scores on the SRT and BNT were statistically significantly lower in the left TLE group compared with the right TLE group, whereas no group differences emerged on the Logical Memory subtest. No significant group differences were found with nonverbal memory measures. When the SRT and BNT were both entered as predictors in a logistic regression, the BNT, although significant, added minimal value to the model beyond the variance accounted for by the SRT Delayed Recall. Both variables emerged as significant predictors of side of seizure focus when entered into separate regressions. Sensitivity and specificity of the SRT and BNT ranged from 56% to 65%. The Open Trial Selective Reminding Test (OT-SRT) is a modification of the SRT that also evaluates new learning abilities. The examinee is asked to learn a list of 10 words over a maximum of 15 trials. Using a criterion-referenced approach, the list is repeatedly administered until a criterion of complete recall on two consecutive trials is achieved. Training to criterion provides a better assessment of learning ability than the traditional fixed trial list-learning paradigm. Recall and recognition is then tested 30 and 90 minutes following the learning trials. Background The natural history of cognitive impairment in multiple sclerosis (MS) and its relationship with disease activity is not well known. In this study, we evaluate a prospective cohort of 44 MS patients who were followed every 3 months for 2 years. Cognitive evaluation was done at baseline and by the end of the study using the Brief Repeatable Battery-Neuropsychology. Clinical evaluation included assessment of new relapses and changes in disability (Extended Disability Status Scale (EDSS)) confirmed at 6 months. Results We found that verbal memory performance deteriorates after 2 years in patients with MS. These changes were observed in stable and active patients both in terms of relapses and disability progression, even at the beginning of the disease, and in patients with or without cognitive impairment at study entry. Attention and executive functions measured with the symbol digit modality test (SDMT) declined after 2 years in patients with confirmed disability progression. Furthermore, SDMT performance correlated with the EDSS change. Conclusions Our findings indicate that verbal memory steadily declines in patients with MS from the beginning of the disease and independently of other parameters of disease activity. Abstract Background A modified version of the Selective Reminding Test (SRT) (Buschke 1973) was used to examine the changes in memory that occur with early-stage dementia of the Alzheimer’s type (DAT) in adults with intellectual disability (ID) and Down’s syndrome (DS), and to compare these changes to those occurring with ‘normal’ ageing. Method Hierarchical linear modelling analyses showed steep declines in the performance of participants who had met the criteria for the onset of DAT. Non-demented participants also showed declines in performance which were related to their age. However, the absolute magnitude of these declines was consistent with a ‘normal’ ageing pattern and not with undetected dementia. Results In analysing the specific memory components that are compromised, the present authors found that participants with early-stage DAT showed severely diminished long-term storage and retrieval processing abilities compared to their non-demented peers. Notably, these declines preceded other symptoms of dementia, in most cases by more than a full year and sometimes by as much as 3 years. Conclusions Thus, the present results clearly confirm that memory processes are affected during early dementia in adults with DS, and that the SRT has promise as a clinical tool.
