Media organizations and journalism educators cooperate to promote better student learning. Most educators uphold the value and importance of coordinated activities such as lectures by media professionals and encourage undergraduates to gain field experiences. The Joint Task Force on Professional Alliances plans to enhance cooperation between journalism educators and professional organizations by systematizing programs.

Homogeneous ethnic labels, deriving from migrants' phenotypic and cultural distinctness, are frequently utilised to single them out as the Other during intercultural encounters. Nonetheless, the Othering enacted by ethnic labelling has not attracted enough attention from host-nationals who use these labels. In-depth interviews with 35 American expatriates revealed that laowai was perceived as a discourse of Othering, which first categorised Westerners under this label as the Other in mainland China for their noticeable non-Chinese physical appearance, and then exposed them to its Chinese users' diversely motivated stereotyping in such forms as exclusion, alienation and discrimination. However, Chinese people had not noticed laowai's nature of being a stereotype-laden discourse of Othering and conversely considered this label as a neutral and even friendly expression. Ultimately, these Americans experienced Chinese people's habitual use of laowai as a way to separate them as permanent outsiders who were subject to Occidentalism in mainland China. Describes an attempt to facilitate the learning of biology by students with poor reading skills through the integration of computer-assisted-instruction with a classical audio-tutorial biology course. Results indicate that performance of poor readers can be improved when they are provided with updated advisement information about their achievement and instructional needs. (JN)

Described are techniques used in a course designed to teach biology as a process to improve students' skills in critical thinking, reasoning, and writing. Results which indicate improved performance on subject-content tests, increased student motivation, and understanding of science as a process are stated. (RT)

The article presents information on the need for data clearinghouse by teachers and practitioners. If research already done is to be widely used, it must be easier to find. Recently, several groups have advocated doing just this: They have recommended a national clearinghouse to collect, abstract and make available for a fee all the communication research available on a given topic. More recently, an action caucus meeting at the 1978 annual convention of the International Communication Association in Chicago called for a feasibility study of such a project. The caucus panel pointed out that many centers exist to collect research data in other fields. Some of those centers collect some communication findings--ERIC collects communication findings of interest to the field of education.
