The article focuses on four books: Eco-Efficiency: The Business Link to Sustainable Development, by Livio D. DeSimone and Frank Popoff; The Corporate Planet: Ecology and Politics in the Age of Globalization, by Joshua Karliner; Shadows in the Forest: Japan and the Politics of Timber in Southeast Asia, by Peter Dauvergne; Earth for Sale: Reclaiming Ecology in the Age of Corporate Greenwash, by Brian Tokar. Imagine a world in which every environmental strategy descended from the boardrooms of transnational corporations, in which, as in Dilbert's world, total quality management principles were ridiculously applied to all matters outside the office. Were this apocalyptic vision ever to become a reality one could blame, in part, the success of the mainstream environmental movement.
