We present results from a search for X-ray/gamma-ray counterparts of gravitational-wave (GW) candidates from the third observing run (O3) of the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA (LVK) network using the Swift Burst Alert Telescope (Swift-BAT). The search includes 636 GW candidates received in low latency, 86 of which have been confirmed by the offline analysis and included in the third cumulative Gravitational-Wave Transient Catalogs (GWTC-3). Targeted searches were carried out on the entire GW sample using the maximum--likelihood NITRATES pipeline on the BAT data made available via the GUANO infrastructure. We do not detect any significant electromagnetic emission that is temporally and spatially coincident with any of the GW candidates. We report flux upper limits in the 15-350 keV band as a function of sky position for all the catalog candidates. For GW candidates where the Swift-BAT false alarm rate is less than 10$^{-3}$ Hz, we compute the GW--BAT joint false alarm rate. Finally, the derived Swift-BAT upper limits are used to infer constraints on the putative electromagnetic emission associated with binary black hole mergers., Comment: 50 pages, 10 figures, 4 tables

Condensed Matter - Soft Condensed Matter - Abstract
The lateral diffusion of lipids within membrane is of paramount importance, serving as a central mechanism in numerous physiological processes including cell signaling, membrane trafficking, protein activity regulation, and energy transduction pathways. This review offers a comprehensive overview of lateral lipid diffusion in model biomembrane systems explored through the lens of neutron scattering techniques. We examine diverse models of lateral diffusion and explore the various factors influencing this fundamental process in membrane dynamics. Additionally, we offer a thorough summary of how different membrane-active compounds, including drugs, antioxidants, stimulants, and membrane proteins, affect lipid lateral diffusion. Our analysis unveils the intricate interplay between these additives and membranes, shedding light on their dynamic interactions. We elucidate that this interaction is governed by a complex combination of multiple factors including the physical state and charge of the membrane, the concentration of additives, the molecular architecture of the compounds, and their spatial distribution within the membrane. In conclusion, we briefly discuss the future directions and areas requiring further investigation in the realm of lateral lipid diffusion, highlighting the need to study more realistic membrane systems.

This article investigates the existence of an $r$-primitive $k$-normal polynomial, defined as the minimal polynomial of an $r$-primitive $k$-normal element in $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$, with a specified degree $n$ and two given coefficients over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_{q}$. Here, $q$ represents an odd prime power, and $n$ is an integer. The article establishes a sufficient condition to ensure the existence of such a polynomial. Using this condition, it is demonstrated that a $2$-primitive $2$-normal polynomial of degree $n$ always exists over $\mathbb{F}_{q}$ when both $q\geq 11$ and $n\geq 15$. However, for the range $10\leq n\leq 14$, uncertainty remains regarding the existence of such a polynomial for $71$ specific pairs of $(q,n)$. Moreover, when $q<11$, the number of uncertain pairs reduces to $16$. Furthermore, for the case of $n=9$, extensive computational power is employed using SageMath software, and it is found that the count of such uncertain pairs is reduced to $3988$., Comment: 27 pages, 3 Tables

Condensed Matter - Soft Condensed Matter - Abstract
The bactericidal potency of ionic liquids (ILs) is well-established, yet their precise mechanism of action remains elusive. Here, we show evidence that the bactericidal action of ILs primarily involves permeabilizing the bacterial cell membrane. Our findings reveal that ILs exert their effects by directly interacting with the lipid bilayer and enhancing the membrane dynamics. Lateral lipid diffusion is accelerated which in turn augments membrane permeability, ultimately leading to bacterial death. Furthermore, our results establish a significant connection: an increase in the alkyl chain length of ILs correlates with a notable enhancement in both lipid lateral diffusion and antimicrobial potency. This underscores a compelling correlation between membrane dynamics and antimicrobial effectiveness, providing valuable insights for the rational design and optimization of IL-based antimicrobial agents in healthcare applications.

High Energy Physics - Theory - Abstract
We initiate the study of an open EFT for finite-temperature holographic systems with interacting fermions. In particular, we do this for Yukawa interactions in the bulk using the real-time formalism (grSK geometry). From the bulk perspective, this study corresponds to Yukawa scattering against a black hole, incorporating the effects of Hawking radiation. We derive an EFT in the exterior of the black hole and thus develop a Witten diagrammatic understanding of the scattering processes. This allows the explicit evaluation of boundary Schwinger-Keldysh (SK) correlators to arbitrary order, at tree-level in the bulk. Here we present explicitly the SK generating functional up to four-point functions. Finally, we represent the correlators in a column-vector representation that manifests microscopic unitarity and thermality, with all the statistical factors neatly folded in., Comment: 22 pages + appendices, 8 figures

Condensed Matter - Mesoscale and Nanoscale Physics - Abstract
Nonlinear photoluminescence (N-PL) is a broadband photon emission arising from non-equilibrium electron distribution generated at the surface of metallic nanostructures by an ultrafast pulsed laser illumination. N-PL is sensitive to surface morphology, local electromagnetic field strength, and electronic band structure making it relevant to probe optically excited nanoscale plasmonic systems. It also has been key to access the complex multiscale time dynamics ruling electron thermalization. Here, we show that the surface plasmons mediated N-PL emitted by a gold nanowire can be modified by an electrical architecture featuring a nanogap. Upon voltage activation, we observe that N-PL becomes dependent to the electrical transport dynamics and can thus be locally modulated. This finding brings an electrical leverage to externally control the photoluminescence generated from metal nanostructures, and constitutes an asset for the development of emerging nanoscale interface devices managing photons and electrons.

We develop provably safe and convergent reinforcement learning (RL) algorithms for control of nonlinear dynamical systems, bridging the gap between the hard safety guarantees of control theory and the convergence guarantees of RL theory. Recent advances at the intersection of control and RL follow a two-stage, safety filter approach to enforcing hard safety constraints: model-free RL is used to learn a potentially unsafe controller, whose actions are projected onto safe sets prescribed, for example, by a control barrier function. Though safe, such approaches lose any convergence guarantees enjoyed by the underlying RL methods. In this paper, we develop a single-stage, sampling-based approach to hard constraint satisfaction that learns RL controllers enjoying classical convergence guarantees while satisfying hard safety constraints throughout training and deployment. We validate the efficacy of our approach in simulation, including safe control of a quadcopter in a challenging obstacle avoidance problem, and demonstrate that it outperforms existing benchmarks., Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures

Among the various candidates for dark matter (DM), ultralight vector DM can be probed by laser interferometric gravitational wave detectors through the measurement of oscillating length changes in the arm cavities. In this context, KAGRA has a unique feature due to differing compositions of its mirrors, enhancing the signal of vector DM in the length change in the auxiliary channels. Here we present the result of a search for $U(1)_{B-L}$ gauge boson DM using the KAGRA data from auxiliary length channels during the first joint observation run together with GEO600. By applying our search pipeline, which takes into account the stochastic nature of ultralight DM, upper bounds on the coupling strength between the $U(1)_{B-L}$ gauge boson and ordinary matter are obtained for a range of DM masses. While our constraints are less stringent than those derived from previous experiments, this study demonstrates the applicability of our method to the lower-mass vector DM search, which is made difficult in this measurement by the short observation time compared to the auto-correlation time scale of DM., Comment: 20 pages, 5 figures

Polycrystalline Ni-Co-Mn-Sn based ferromagnetic shape memory alloys (FSMAs) show promise as actuator materials, but their practical application involving magnetic field induced strain (MFIS) is often limited by three factors: the requirement for high magnetic fields (> 5 T), martensitic transition temperature away from room temperature, and limited recovery of pre-strain applied to the martensite phase. Current work investigates the martensitic transition (MT) and shape memory effect under the application of magnetic field for bulk polycrystalline Ni37Co11Mn43Sn9 alloy. The outcome of the study reveals a metamagnetic transition from the martensitic phase to the austenitic phase at a low field of 2.8 T at 300 K which results 0.25% spontaneous MFIS. Interestingly, 1.3% pre-strained specimen registers a 100% recovery with the application of magnetic field of 4.5 T. Furthermore, the pre-strained specimen exhibited a two-way shape memory effect between a strain value of 1.0% to 1.55% during the field loading and unloading sequences. Notably, this study also demonstrates, to the best of our knowledge , for the first time, that the spontaneous strain and pre-strain add together. This finding paves the way for achieving a giant MFIS by pre-straining a Ni-Mn-Sn/In class of FSMAs which shows large spontaneous MFIS., Comment: 39 pages,9 figures

Large language models (LLMs) have profoundly transformed natural language applications, with a growing reliance on instruction-based definitions for designing chatbots. However, post-deployment the chatbot definitions are fixed and are vulnerable to attacks by malicious users, emphasizing the need to prevent unethical applications and financial losses. Existing studies explore user prompts' impact on LLM-based chatbots, yet practical methods to contain attacks on application-specific chatbots remain unexplored. This paper presents System Prompt Meta Language (SPML), a domain-specific language for refining prompts and monitoring the inputs to the LLM-based chatbots. SPML actively checks attack prompts, ensuring user inputs align with chatbot definitions to prevent malicious execution on the LLM backbone, optimizing costs. It also streamlines chatbot definition crafting with programming language capabilities, overcoming natural language design challenges. Additionally, we introduce a groundbreaking benchmark with 1.8k system prompts and 20k user inputs, offering the inaugural language and benchmark for chatbot definition evaluation. Experiments across datasets demonstrate SPML's proficiency in understanding attacker prompts, surpassing models like GPT-4, GPT-3.5, and LLAMA. Our data and codes are publicly available at: https://prompt-compiler.github.io/SPML/.

Nuclear Theory - Abstract
A detailed study of $\alpha$-clusters decay is exhibited by incorporating crucial microscopic nuclear structure information into the estimations of half-life and preformation factor. For the first time, using the k-cross validation approach, two semi-empirical formulas for (i) $\alpha$-decay half-life and (ii) $\alpha$-particle preformation factor, are picked out and subsequently modified by including shell, odd-nucleon blocking, and asymmetry effects along with the usual dependence on $\alpha$-decay energy ($Q_{\alpha}$) and angular momentum of $\alpha$-particle. Both the formulas are fitted for the two different regions separated by neutron number N$=$126, as from the experimental systematics the role of N$=$126 shell closure is found decisive in determining the trends of $Q_{\alpha}$, $\alpha$-decay half-life, and $\alpha$-particle preformation factor. It is found that the inclusion of the above-mentioned degrees of freedom significantly reduces the errors in the estimations when compared with several other similar modified/refitted semi-empirical relations indicating the robustness of the proposed formulas. The predictions of $\alpha$-decay half-life throughout the periodic chart have been made including the unknown territory, future probable decay chain of self-conjugate nucleus $^{112}$Ba terminated on $^{100}$Sn, decay chain of $^{208}$Pa through new isotope $^{204}$Ac as well as decay chains of awaiting superheavy nuclei $^{298}$Og and $^{299}$120., Comment: 13 pages, 7 Figures, Accepted in European Physical Journal A (2024)

We introduce a novel framework for studying small-scale primordial perturbations and their cosmological implications. The framework uses a deep reinforcement learning to generate scalar power spectrum profiles that are consistent with current observational constraints. The framework is shown to predict the abundance of primordial black holes and the production of secondary induced gravitational waves. We demonstrate that the set up under consideration is capable of generating predictions that are beyond the traditional model-based approaches., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, comments are welcome

Josephson diodes (JDs) offer a promising route towards realizing dissipation-less rectification at low temperatures. To be practically viable, a JD must operate at zero magnetic fields, exhibit high operating frequencies and efficiency, and possess tunability and scalability. In this study, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a straightforward mechanism that encompasses all these crucial features. Our approach involves utilizing an asymmetric Josephson junction with a magnetic weak link to attain a diode effect in the switching current. We substantiate this concept experimentally through the fabrication of mesa-type sputter-deposited tri-layered ferromagnetic long NbN/GdN/NbN Josephson junctions (JJs) in cross geometry. A robust zero-field diode effect is observed with an efficiency boost of up to 40% achievable through modification of the micromagnetic structure of the barrier. Notably, these diodes maintain high efficiency across a wide temperature range, from the lowest temperatures up to at least 4.2K, and exhibit an operating frequency of nearly 28GHz.

Animals adjust their behavioral response to sensory input adaptively depending on past experiences. The flexible brain computation is crucial for survival and is of great interest in neuroscience. The nematode C. elegans modulates its navigation behavior depending on the association of odor butanone with food (appetitive training) or starvation (aversive training), and will then climb up the butanone gradient or ignore it, respectively. However, the exact change in navigation strategy in response to learning is still unknown. Here we study the learned odor navigation in worms by combining precise experimental measurement and a novel descriptive model of navigation. Our model consists of two known navigation strategies in worms: biased random walk and weathervaning. We infer weights on these strategies by applying the model to worm navigation trajectories and the exact odor concentration it experiences. Compared to naive worms, appetitive trained worms up-regulate the biased random walk strategy, and aversive trained worms down-regulate the weathervaning strategy. The statistical model provides prediction with $>90 \%$ accuracy of the past training condition given navigation data, which outperforms the classical chemotaxis metric. We find that the behavioral variability is altered by learning, such that worms are less variable after training compared to naive ones. The model further predicts the learning-dependent response and variability under optogenetic perturbation of the olfactory neuron AWC$^\mathrm{ON}$. Lastly, we investigate neural circuits downstream from AWC$^\mathrm{ON}$ that are differentially recruited for learned odor-guided navigation. Together, we provide a new paradigm to quantify flexible navigation algorithms and pinpoint the underlying neural substrates.

We study the rheology of bidisperse non-Brownian suspensions using particle-based simulation, mapping the viscosity as a function of the size ratio of the species, their relative abundance, and the overall solid content. The variation of the viscosity with applied stress exhibits shear thickening phenomenology irrespective of composition, though the stress-dependent limiting solids fraction governing the viscosity and its divergence point are non-monotonic in the mixing ratio. Contact force data demonstrate an asymmetric exchange in dominant stress contribution from large-large to small-small particle contacts as the mixing ratio of the species evolves. Combining a prior model for shear thickening with one for composition-dependent jamming, we obtain a full description of the rheology of bidisperse non-Brownian suspensions capable of predicting effects such as the viscosity reduction observed upon adding small particle fines to a suspension of large particles., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures
