This paper explores the multitasking scheduling problem via alternate periods, which is common in manufacturing and service industries. The shift pattern comprises regular shifts interspersed with breaks, allowing job switching. We focus on two alternate periods consisting of odd periods and even periods. Each job is not only processed completely within odd periods or completely within even periods, but job switching is also allowed between alternate periods with additional overhead. For this problem, we propose two job switching models. The first model is alternate periods multitasking scheduling with switching time, where a fixed switching time is incurred whenever a job is switched from one period to its adjacent period. The second model is alternate periods multitasking scheduling with diverse speeds, where an urgent switching cost is produced if a job is processed through the alternate periods with different speeds. For the two models, we study three scheduling objectives including minimising the total completion time, minimising the maximum lateness, and minimising the number of tardy jobs, respectively. For each of the problems under consideration, we investigate the structural properties of the optimal schedule and develop the corresponding pseudo-polynomial time dynamic programming algorithm. For over five decades, researchers have presented various assembly line problems. Recently, assembly lines with multiple workers at each workstation have become very common in the literature. These lines are often found in the manufacturing of large vehicles, where workers at a workstation may perform their assigned tasks at the same time. Most research on multi-manned assembly lines focuses on balancing tasks and workers among workstations and scheduling tasks for workers. This study, however, concentrates on assigning tasks to workers already assigned to a specific workstation, rather than balancing the entire line. The problem was identified through an industrial case study at a large vehicle manufacturing company. The study presents two methods, one using mixed integer linear programming and the other using constraint programming, to minimise the number of workers required on a multi-manned assembly line with sequence-dependent setup times. The results of the computational experiments indicate that the constraint programming method performs better than the mixed integer linear programming method on several modified benchmark instances from the literature. The constraint programming model is also tested on the real-world scenario of our industrial case study and leads to significant improvements in the productivity of the workstations. In this paper, a variant of the open shop scheduling problem is considered in which the intermediate storage is forbidden among two adjacent production stages (zero buffer or machine blocking constraint). The performance measure is to minimise the maximal completion time of the jobs (makespan). Since this is an NP-hard problem, a two-stage constraint programming approach is proposed as a new exact method. Computational experiments were carried out on 222 literature problem instances in order to test the performance of the proposed algorithm. The relative deviation is adopted as the performance criteria. Computational results point to the ability of the proposed method to solve large-sized instances in comparison with the developed mixed-integer linear programming model and a simple constraint programming model, both with user cuts. In all set of instances, the proposed two-stage method performed better than benchmarking methods and integer programming models, with average relative deviation regarding objective values as lower as 12%. In addition, the results point to a competitive efficiency in computational times of the proposed method with less than 200 s in the most instances to obtain the optimal solution, in comparison to competitive metaheuristics from literature of the problem, for the tested test instances. Research in HR has devoted little attention to the practice of scheduling shift workers into times and places to conduct their work. Relying upon the growing literature related to relational HR, we propose a relational view of scheduling that focuses on how employees' social contexts—particularly their being co‐scheduled with higher performers—relate to changes in performance over time. We apply resource dependence and social learning theories to describe how employees' performance over time depends upon their working alongside higher performers. Higher performers consume limited resources (thereby constraining peers' performance in the short term), yet also provide instructive role models for learning new skills (thereby elevating peers' performance over the longer term). We further hypothesize these effects are stronger for employees who are newer to the firm in contrast to those with more experience. We analyze scheduling and performance data from 7,893 retail sales representatives over a 1‐year period. Results show co‐scheduling with higher performers has an immediate negative effect on employee performance, but is positively related to employee performance over time. Unexpectedly, co‐scheduling effects were present for all employees and not only for those new to the organization. Our study points to the need for HR research on employee scheduling to better understand how shift workers' schedules provide the relational context for their work. The research offers several theoretical contributions in understanding the peer effects of higher performers, and we offer practical implications for managers seeking to design employees' schedules to encourage organizationally advantageous relationships between coworkers. Introduction Rotating shiftwork schedules are known to disrupt sleep in a manner that can negatively impact safety. Consumer sleep technologies (CSTs) may be a useful tool for sleep tracking, but the standard feedback provided by CSTs may not be salient to shift-working populations. SleepTank is an app that uses the total sleep time data scored by a CST to compute a percentage that equates hours of sleep to the fuel in a car and warns the user to sleep when the "tank" is low. Royal Australian Navy aircraft maintenance workers operating on a novel rotational shift schedule were given Fitbit Versa 2s to assess sleep timing, duration, and efficiency across a 10-week period. Half of the participants had access to just the Fitbit app while the other half had access to Fitbit and the SleepTank app. The goal of this study was to evaluate differences in sleep behavior between shifts using an off-the-shelf CST and to investigate the potential of the SleepTank app to increase sleep duration during the 10-week rotational shift work schedule. Materials and Methods Royal Australian Navy volunteers agreed to wear a Fitbit Versa 2 with the SleepTank app (SleepTank condition), or without the SleepTank app (Controls), for up to 10 weeks from May to July 2023 during the trial of a novel shift rotation schedule. Participants from across 6 units worked a combination of early (6:00 AM to 2:00 PM), day (7:30 AM to 4:30 PM), late (4:00 PM to 12:00 AM), and night shifts (12:00 AM to 6:00 AM) or stable day shifts (6:00 AM to 4:00 PM). Differences in sleep behavior (time in bed, total sleep time, bedtime, wake time, sleep efficiency [SE]) between conditions and shift types were tested using Analysis of Variance. This study was approved by the Australian Departments of Defence and Veterans' Affairs Human Research Ethics Committee. Results Thirty-four participants completed the full study (n  = 17 Controls; n  = 17 SleepTank). There was a significant effect of shift type on 24-hour time in bed (TIB24; F(4,9) = 8.15, P  < .001, η2 = 0.15) and total sleep time (TST24; F(4,9) = 8.54, P  < .001, η2 = 0.18); both were shorter in early shifts and night shifts compared to other shift types. TIB24 and TST24 were not significantly different between conditions, but there was a trend for greater SE in the SleepTank condition relative to Controls (F(1,9) = 2.99, P  = .08, η2 = 0.11). Conclusions Sleep data collected by Fitbit Versa 2s indicated shorter sleep duration (TIB24, TST24) for Royal Australian Navy workers during early and late shifts relative to stable day shifts. Access to the SleepTank app did not greatly influence measures of sleep duration but may be protective against fatigue by affecting SE. Background: Shift work was associated with elevated dementia risk. Definitive guidelines for sleep duration among shift workers have not been proposed. We aimed to identify sleep durations associated with elimination of excess dementia risk in shift workers. Methods: 285,213 dementia-free UK Biobank participants at baseline, aged 38–71 years, were enrolled between 2006 and 2010 and followed up through 2022 in this cohort study. Cox proportional hazards models were used to examine the associations between shift work, sleep duration, and risk of dementia. Results: The 285,213 participants included 49,079 shift workers and 236,134 non-shift workers. Over a median follow-up of 13.8 years, 1887 dementia cases were documented. Current shift workers had significantly higher dementia risk than non-shift workers (hazard ratio [HR] 1.26; 95% CI 1.11–1.42). However, this excess risk was eliminated in shift workers with 8 h of sleep (HR 1.02; 95% CI 0.80–1.29). Analysis of shift work frequency indicated that "sometimes" and "usually/always" shift work were associated with increased dementia risk compared to that of non-shift workers, but excess dementia risk was eliminated in members of either frequency group receiving 8 h of sleep ("sometimes", HR 1.05; 95% CI 0.75–1.48; "usually/always", HR 0.98; 95% CI 0.70–1.35). Both "non-night shift" and "night shift" workers showed increased dementia risk compared to non-shift workers. Workers with 8 h of sleep mitigated the excess risk (HR 1.13; 95% CI 0.84–1.53 and HR 0.86; 95% CI 0.59–1.26, respectively). Although real-time event detection during video EEG recording is required to ensure patients' safety, it is limited by the technologists' availability. We sought to explore the efficiency of real-time event detection by the EEG technologists in a single tertiary academic center. We retrospectively reviewed events from continuous inpatient video EEGs (cEEGs) and epilepsy monitoring unit (EMU) recordings in January 2017, when real-time surveillance was only available during the night shift, and June 2017, when a dedicated neurodiagnostic EEG technologist was available for real-time monitoring during all shifts. The events were categorized into those detected immediately (eyes-on), later in the same shift (delayed) or identified on the subsequent shift (missed). Chi-square and Fisher's exact tests were used for statistical comparisons. In January 2017, there were 25 patients (117 days of monitoring) in the EMU and 54 inpatients (146 days of monitoring) on cEEG with 92 total events, (39% seizures). In June 2017, there were 30 patients (133 days of monitoring) in the EMU and 47 additional inpatients (80 days of monitoring) on cEEG with 110 total events, (39% seizures). The number of events identified in real time was low and did not significantly differ among shifts regardless of the availability of the monitoring technologist. Most events were identified at the time of subsequent EEG scanning by the EEG technologist. Partial staffing for continuous video EEG surveillance is insufficient to identify events in real time. Working at night is associated with adverse cardiometabolic health outcomes. However, there are a lack of nutritional intervention studies conducted amongst night workers, subsequently contributing to a lack of evidence‐based guidelines for night workers. The aim of The Eating on the Night Shift study was to understand how night shift workers view working at night in relation to nutritional health and wellbeing, the barriers and enablers to participate in research and what kind of guidance would be useful to them. Semi‐structured qualitative interviews were conducted with a convenience sample (n = 18) of night workers based in England. The interview covered experiences of working night shifts, perceptions about night work and their health, and perceptions of and likely engagement with nutritional research. Interviews were audio recorded and transcribed verbatim. Transcripts were coded using an inductive thematic analysis approach. Of the final sample 13 were female (72%), 39% worked a rotating shift pattern and 78% had worked night shifts for 1 year or more. Four overarching themes were identified: (1) the consequences of night work on health and wellbeing, (2) eating at night means a less healthy diet, (3) working at night has wider knock‐on effects on aspects of lifestyle and wellbeing and (4) nutritional research is perceived as important, but there are barriers to participation. Night workers are aware that working at night can negatively impact their diet as well as their health. Nutritional researchers need to engage with night workers when considering intervention design and implementation as well as in the development of any resultant evidence‐based guidance to ensure its relevance. The rapid technology growth in the maritime defense sector demands efficient and effective human performance, particularly in roles involving navigation, tactical decision-making, and emergency responses. To accommodate this demand, our study aims to find the effects of the two most significant performance influencing factors i.e., mental alertness and workload on the performance of Electronic Support Measures (ESM) receiver operators in complex task environments of a surface combat ship. A Discrete Event Simulation model with the Task Network Modeling approach was developed in IPME software. Alertness, measured by the Karolinska Sleepiness Scale (KSS), was predicted for Crew Chiefs' schedules (4–8, 6–6, and 8–8) using the Three Process Model in FIPS software. The simulation integrated KSS predictions and VACP workload values, with 10 simulation runs, for each schedule, to assess the effects of mental alertness and workload on the total number of signals missed, the total number of signals logged, and percentage time at risk. The findings reveal that mental alertness variation due to different shift patterns in combination with mental workload significantly influence performance metrics, especially during night time operations, highlighting potential attention lapses and reduced efficiency. This comprehensive analysis provides valuable insights into the dynamics of shift work and task demands, aiming to enhance operational safety and performance in critical environments. The study's methodology and findings offer a foundation for further research and practical applications in various industries where managing mental alertness and workload is crucial for safety and efficient crew performance. Shift work disrupts circadian rhythms and alters sleep patterns, resulting in various health problems. To quantitatively assess the impact of shift work on brain health, we evaluated the brain age index (BAI) derived from sleep electroencephalography (EEG) results in night-shift workers and compared it with that in daytime workers. We studied 45 female night shift nurses (mean age: 28.2 ± 3.3 years) and 44 female daytime workers (30.5 ± 4.7 years). Sleep EEG data were analyzed to calculate BAI. The BAI of night shift workers who were asleep during the daytime with those of daytime workers who were asleep at night were statistically compared to explore associations between BAI, duration of shift work, and sleep quality. Night-shift workers exhibited significantly higher BAI (2.14 ± 6.04 vs. 0 ± 5.35), suggesting accelerated brain aging and altered sleep architecture, including reduced delta and sigma wave frequency activity during non-rapid eye movement sleep than daytime workers. Furthermore, poor deep sleep quality, indicated by a higher percentage of N1, lower percentage of N3, and higher arousal index, was associated with increased BAI among shift workers. Additionally, a longer duration of night-shift work was correlated with increased BAI, particularly in older shift workers. Night-shift work, especially over extended periods, may be associated with accelerated brain aging, as indicated by higher BAI and alterations in sleep architecture. Interventions are necessary to mitigate the health impacts of shift work. Purpose To establish a standardized method of reformatting axial images for computed tomography (CT) brain examinations. Methods An anatomic line between the superior orbital rim and the base of the occipital bone (SOR-BS line) was chosen as the standardized reference line. In June 2022, CT technologists at a tertiary care center received an educational presentation and a 1-page reference handout on making standardized CT reformats. This was the quality-of-care intervention. Subsequently, 100 CT brain examinations performed on July 1 to 10, 2020 (preintervention) were analyzed and compared with 100 CT brain examinations performed on July 1 to 10, 2022 (postintervention). Results There were no significant differences in the mean angle differences measured between the preintervention (6.2 ± 5.8°) and the postintervention (5.8 ± 4.7°) groups (P = .67). However, the number of CT brain studies with an angle difference of more than 20° decreased from 4 studies to 1 study. In addition, the number of CT brain studies without reformatted images decreased from 5 to 2 studies. Discussion The cause for the less-than-optimal adoption of the expected change in CT workflow might be complex and multifactorial. However, the institution in this study is a busy tertiary care center with a chronic shortage of CT technologists. The busy workflow might have contributed to lack of significance for the parameters assessed. Background Police work can be sedentary and stressful, negatively impacting health and wellbeing. In a novel co-creation approach, we used the Behavior Change Wheel (BCW) and Double Diamond (DD) design framework to guide the collaborative design and development of a sedentary behavior intervention in the control rooms of two British police forces. Methods Multiple stakeholders participated in four phases of research. In Phase 1, a literature review, focus groups (n  = 20) and interviews (n  = 10) were conducted to 'discover' the relationship between physical activity and wellbeing in the police. In Phase 2, a steering group consolidated Phase 1 findings to 'define' a specific behavior for intervention. Phases 3 and 4 'developed' the intervention across six workshops with control room workers and six steering group workshops. Results The co-creation process identified contextual sedentary behavior as the target behavior, driven by behavioral regulation, social influence and social norms. The sedentary behavior intervention targeted these drivers and aimed to engage control room workers in short bursts of physical activity throughout their shifts. Key intervention features targeted involvement of staff in decision-making and embedding physical activity into work practices. Background: The evidence for the health benefits of physical activity is growing; however, the prevalence of unhealthy lifestyles continues to contribute to the increase in chronic non-communicable diseases. We know that occupational-time physical activity does not provide the same benefits as leisure-time physical activity, which has been shown to reduce mortality and pain. We also know that multiple factors influence pain; however, there are no studies that specifically analyze the impact of type of working time and occupational-time physical activity on the impairment of daily activities due to pain. We aimed to study the influence of both personal and occupational factors on the impairment of daily activities due to pain, assessing whether leisure-time physical activity acts as a protective factor. Methods : A cross-sectional, population-based design was used based on the 2017 National Health Survey in Spain (ENSE). Sociodemographic, leisure-time physical activity, and work-related variables were collected. The outcome variable was the impairment of daily activities due to pain. Ordinal logistic regression was applied, and the analysis was complemented with simple correspondence analysis. Results : A total of 1,441 workers between 18 and 65 years of age were studied. Significant differences were found between sexes for all variables except age and leisure-time physical activity. Logistic regression revealed significant associations between sex, primary and secondary education levels, no leisure-time physical activity, and overweight with impairment of daily activities due to pain. Simple correspondence analysis showed that the categories doing leisure-time physical activity several times a week as well as several times a month are closer to the categories of little or no pain. Conclusion : Female gender, low educational level, overweight, and lack of leisure-time physical activity were associated with increases in impairment of daily activities due to pain. Occupational-time physical activity and work shift were not related to impairment of daily activities due to pain. Implications for Occupational Health Practice : Occupational Health Nursing interventions through education and counseling on the importance of leisure-time physical activity promotion programs potentially can reduce the impairment of daily activities due to pain in working populations. Background: This study examines working hours, shift work, and remote work patterns by occupation and industry among U.S. full-time workers, along with the association between working and sleeping hours. Methods: Utilizing data from 2011 to 2020 American Time Use Survey, this national household survey examines how individuals aged 15 years or older in the United States spend their time within a 24-hour period. Findings: In 2011 to 2019, U.S. full-time workers averaged 8.1 hours of work and 7.8 hours spent sleep on workdays, increasing to 9.6 hours on non-workdays. Among all occupations, Emergency medical technicians and paramedics had the longest average working hours (10.4 hours). Protective services occupations had the highest percentage (41.7%) of workers reporting often working shifts other than daytime. Among all industries, truck transportation industry had the longest average working hours (9.2). Food services and drinking places industries had the highest percentage (28.6%) of workers reporting often working shifts other than daytime. Working hours showed a negative association with sleeping hours. In 2020, 34.0% of full-time workers reported remote work due to COVID-19, with the largest percentage (72.3%) occurring in business and financial operations. Conclusions: The study findings offer essential benchmarks for comparing working hours and schedules across diverse occupations and industries. In sheltered employment centres, staff planning and scheduling activities are critical for operations managers. A generic framework is not easy to set up not only because legal issues are diverse and differ among these service organization types, but one worker may not fit in anywhere at any time. This complexity is greater when workers with specific needs perform work activities in many labour enclaves and different sectors. In this paper, a mixed-integer linear model to solve workers' shift assignments to other workplaces and various activities to form teams is proposed. The novelty of the proposed model lies in considering specific features, such as the skills matrix and the affinity matrix, between the different actors in a labour enclave. The model is validated using real instances from a case study, and several objectives are tested and discussed. Objectives. Associations between shift-work, musculoskeletal symptoms and absenteeism are poorly investigated in the manufacturing industry. This study aimed to investigate associations between working schedule, musculoskeletal symptoms and days of absenteeism among pulp and paper industry workers. Methods. Musculoskeletal symptoms of 904 workers were assessed through the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire. χ2 tests assessed associations between being a day-worker or shift-worker, the prevalence of musculoskeletal symptoms and days of absenteeism. Results. A significant association was found between working schedule and symptoms in the lower back in the last 12 months, with shift-workers presenting higher prevalence than day-workers (p = 0.022). Significant associations were also found between days of absenteeism and symptoms in the shoulders (p = 0.002), which mostly led to absenteeism of 100–365 days; elbows (p < 0.001), wrists/hands (p = 0.045) and ankles/feet (p = 0.042), which produced absenteeism mostly of 25–99 days; and dorsal region (p = 0.001), which mainly led to absenteeism of 10–24 days. No associations were found between working schedule and days of absenteeism (p = 0.265). Conclusion. Shift-work is associated with increased prevalence of lower back symptoms, but seems not to influence days of absenteeism. Shoulders seem to be the region leading to higher days of absenteeism, followed by elbows, wrists/hands, ankles/feet and the dorsal region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recent studies suggest that shift working may trigger health issues through disrupted circadian rhythms and altered eating habits. This study aimed to examine the possible associations of shift work with sleep quality, diet quality and obesity-related parameters. This study was conducted with 150 males (75 shift and daytime workers) aged 24–50 years. Dietary intake was determined using the 24-hour recall method, and dietary quality was evaluated using the Healthy Eating Index-2010 (HEI-2010). Anthropometrical measurements and body composition were assessed. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index was used to evaluate sleep quality. Fasting and postprandial glucose and insulin, and fasting lipid levels were analyzed. HOMA-IR was calculated, and blood pressure was measured. The total HEI-2010 score of shift workers (52.6 [45.4–58.8]) was lower than the daytime workers (55.9 [49.1–64.9]) (p = 0.016). Among individuals with good sleep quality, the total HEI-2010 score, seafood and plant proteins, fatty acids, and sodium scores were lower in shift workers compared to others (p < 0.05 for each). Non-obese shift workers had higher body weight, waist circumference, waist/hip ratio, VLDL-cholesterol, triglyceride, postprandial glucose, and insulin levels compared to daytime workers (p < 0.05 for each). Introduction: Existing studies suggest that the number of night shifts may impact the occurrence of adverse events. However, while this relationship is well-documented, previous research has not thoroughly examined the non-linear associations between night shifts and adverse events among nursing staff, which remains a gap in our understanding. Methods: Participants were 1,774 Chinese nurse staff. Psychosocial characteristics were screened by The Chinese version of the multidimensional scale of perceived social support (MSPSS) for social support, the 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) for depressive symptoms, the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) for anxiety symptoms. Binary logistic regression and restricted cubic splines were applied to analyze the data. The statistical software used were R version 3.6.2 and SPSS version 22.0. Results: Over the past year, 325 cases (18.3%) were classified as adverse events. Logistic regression unveiled that social support played a protective role against adverse events, with an OR of 0.991 (95% CI: 0.983, 0.999). Furthermore, night shifts continued to surface as a substantial risk factor for adverse events, with an OR to 1.300 (95% CI: 1.181, 1.431). The restricted cubic spline regression model highlights a nonlinear relationship between night shifts and adverse events (P for non-liner < 0.001). The probability of adverse events increases with the number of night shifts, but compared to individuals working 3–4 night shifts per month, those working 5–6 night shifts per month have a lower probability of adverse events. Conclusion: Our findings indicate a non-linear relationship between the frequency of night shifts and adverse events, suggesting a complex interplay of factors. This highlights the need for nursing practice and policy to consider the intricacies of night shift scheduling and explore more reasonable rostering strategies to mitigate the probability of adverse events. Background: Effective information transfer during nursing shift handover is a crucial component of safe care in the emergency department (ED). Examining nursing handover models shows that they are frequently associated with errors. Disadvantages of the SBAR handover model include uncertainty of nursing staff regarding transfer of responsibility and non-confidentiality of patient information. To increase reliability of handover, written forms and templates can be used in addition to oral handover by the bedside. Aims: The purpose of this study is to compare the 'Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation (SBAR) method and modified handover model on the handover quality and nurse perception of shift handover in the ED. Methods: This research was designed as a semi-experimental study, with census survey method used for sampling. In order to collect data, Nurse Perception of Hanover Questionnaire (NPHQ) and Handover Quality Rating Tool (HQRT) were used after translating and confirming validity and reliability used to direct/collect data. A total of 31 nurses working in the ED received training on the modified shift handover model in a one-hour theory session and three hands-on bedside training sessions. This model was implemented by the nurses for one month. Data was analyzed with SPSS (version 26) using paired t-tests and analysis of covariance. Results: Results indicated significant difference between the modified handover model and SBAR in components of information transfer (P < 0.001), shared understanding (P < 0.001), working atmosphere (P = 0.004), handover quality (P < 0.001), and nurse perception of handover (P < 0.001). The univariate covariance test did not show demographic variables to be significantly correlated with handover perception or handover quality in SBAR and modified methods (P > 0.05). Conclusions: The results of this study can be presented to nursing managers as a guide in improving the quality of nursing care via implementing and applying the modified handover model in the nursing handover. The resistance of nurses against executing a new handover method was one of the limitations of the research, which was resolved by explanation of the plan and goals, as well as the cooperation of the hospital matron, and the ward supervisor. Accurately assessing the residual strength of corroded oil and gas pipelines is crucial for ensuring their safe and stable operation. Machine learning techniques have shown promise in addressing this challenge due to their ability to handle complex, non-linear relationships in data. Unlike previous studies that primarily focused on enhancing prediction accuracy through the optimization of single models, this work shifts the emphasis to a different approach: stacking ensemble learning. This study applies a stacking model composed of seven base learners and three meta-learners to predict the residual strength of pipelines using a dataset of 453 instances. Automated hyperparameter tuning libraries are utilized to search for optimal hyperparameters. By evaluating various combinations of base learners and meta-learners, the optimal stacking configuration was determined. The results demonstrate that the stacking model, using k-nearest neighbors as the meta-learner alongside seven base learners, delivers the best predictive performance, with a coefficient of determination of 0.959. Compared to individual models, the stacking model also significantly improves generalization performance. However, the stacking model's effectiveness on low-strength pipelines is limited due to the small sample size. Furthermore, incorporating original features into the second-layer model did not significantly enhance performance, likely because the first-layer model had already extracted most of the critical features. Given the marginal contribution of model optimization to prediction accuracy, this work offers a novel perspective for improving model performance. Background: Troubled conscience results from the lack of attention to the voice of conscience. Regarding the fact that ICU healthcare workers are constantly faced with stressful and challenging situations, they often experience a troubled conscience. Aim: This study aimed to explain the factors leading to troubled conscience and identify the consequences of troubled conscience among ICU nurses. Methods: Qualitative content analysis was used to answer the research question. A total of 18 ICU nurses were selected to participate in this study using purposive sampling. Data were collected using face-to-face, semi-structured interviews. Findings: Four categories of "carelessness", "contextual challenges", "non-supportive and unpredictable structure" and "whirlpool of troubled conscience" were shown to constitute the main causes of troubled conscience among ICU nurses. Conclusion: Troubled conscience negatively impacts nurses and is associated with psychological/behavioral changes among them. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a relatively common disease, and preventing its occurrence is important for both individual health and reducing social costs. Shift work is reported to have several negative effects on health. An association has been observed between NAFLD and both sleep time and quality; however, this association remains unclear in night shift workers. We aimed to evaluate the relationship between shift work and the incidence of NAFLD. Overall, 45,149 Korean workers without NAFLD were included at baseline. NAFLD was defined as the presence of a fatty liver observed on ultrasonography without excessive alcohol use. incidence rate ratios for incident NAFLD were estimated using negative binomial regression according to age groups (20s, 30s, 40s, and 50s). In the 20s age group, shift work showed a significant incidence rate ratio (IRR) for NAFLD in all models. After adjusting for all variables, the IRR (95% confidence interval) was 1.24 (1.08–1.43) in the 20s age group. In their 20s, a significant association between shift work and incident NAFLD was consistently observed among women and workers with poor sleep quality. Summary Chronotype may affect tolerance for circadian disruption induced by shift work. This study examines the association between chronotype, self‐reported sleep timing, shift type preference, and sleep problems among nurses, and studies chronotype stability over time. The study included 37,731 Dutch female nurses who completed a baseline (2011) and follow‐up questionnaire (2017), with information on shift work (e.g., job history, shift type preference [collected in 2017 only]), and sleep characteristics (e.g., chronotype, preferred sleep–wake time in a work‐free period [collected in 2017 only], and sleep problems between working days according to Medical Outcomes Study‐Sleep Problem Index II [MOS‐SPI‐II]). The association between chronotype and sleep timing was examined using (age‐adjusted) linear regression. Associations between chronotype and shift type preference and sleep problems (MOS‐SPI‐II >30) were examined using ordered logistic and Poisson regression, respectively. With later chronotype, midsleep time increased (definite evening vs. intermediate types [reference]: β = 55 min, 95% confidence interval [95% CI]: 54–55), the odds ratio (OR) for 1‐point increase in preference for night (2.68; 95% CI: 2.48–2.90) and evening shifts increased (OR 2.20; 95% CI: 2.03–2.38), while the odds for day (OR 0.17; 95% CI: 0.16–0.18) and morning shifts (OR 0.22; 95% CI: 0.21–0.24) decreased. Intermediate chronotype was associated with fewer sleep problems (median MOS‐SPI‐II = 27.2, p < 0.01), compared with definite morning (28.9) and evening types (31.7). This study shows that chronotype is associated with sleep–wake times in a work‐free period, shift type preference, and sleep problems in nurses. Introduction: Decent working time in the health sector is critical to providing quality care, and balancing health workers' well-being with the requirements of 24/7 healthcare provision. Nursing and midwifery staff, comprising the largest group in the health workforce, play a crucial role. Understanding their experiences and challenges related to duty rosters is essential for improving work conditions, job satisfaction, and ultimately, the quality of care. Objective: This study aims to explore the experiences of nurses and midwives with the hospital duty roster at selected health facilities in Ho, the Volta Region of Ghana. Method: A qualitative research method with a phenomenological approach was employed to capture the nuanced experiences of nurses and midwives regarding the hospital duty roster. A semistructured interview guide facilitated data collection, ensuring a comprehensive exploration of participants' experiences. Three selected health facilities in Ho, the Volta Region of Ghana, served as the study's location. The study recruited 20 participants (nurses and midwives) to reach data saturation. The collected data were transcribed verbatim and analyzed through thematic content analysis, using a deductive approach. Researchers reviewed the raw data, generating initial codes to capture new concepts of interest. Results: The duty roster often demonstrated organizational flaws negatively impacting the health, well-being, and job performance of nurses and midwives, consequently affecting patient care quality. The study identified that these healthcare professionals faced significant risks of work-related stress, burnout, and mental health problems due to ineffective coping strategies toward the hospital duty roster. Findings from the study also demonstrated that nurses and midwives prefer day shift because of its short time and the availability of all groups of professionals to help manage cases as compared to a night shift. Conclusions: The findings underscore factors influencing nurses' choice of shift patterns, emphasizing the need for further research to explore the extent to which nurses' preferences are considered when designing hospital duty rosters. This study investigated whether stress and positive anticipations about tomorrow are associated with emotional experiences the following day, mediated by the preceding night's sleep. Data were from 141 full‐time nurses, utilizing a 14‐day ecological momentary assessment combined with actigraphy sleep monitoring. Each evening, participants rated the anticipated pleasantness or stressfulness of the following day. Each morning, participants reported on their previous night's sleep. Additionally, participants reported their momentary positive affect (PA) and negative affect (NA) three times per day, with daily averages computed. Multilevel mediation models, adjusted for sociodemographics, work shift, workday, and previous day's affect, revealed that days following more stress anticipations were associated with reduced PA and increased NA. Conversely, days following more pleasantness anticipations were associated with increased PA and decreased NA. These within‐person associations were mediated by self‐reported time‐in‐bed, sufficiency, and quality, such that less stressful and more pleasant anticipations were associated with better sleep, and better sleep was subsequently associated with increased PA and decreased NA. No mediation was found by the actigraphy sleep parameters. Findings suggest that emotional states may covary not only with present stimuli but also with anticipation of future events and subjective sleep recovery in the context of those anticipations. Social Zeitgeber Theory posits that disruptions in social rhythms can increase susceptibility to bipolar disorder (BD). Shift work (SW) is one of the external factors that cause instability in social rhythms and the sleep-wake cycle. This study evaluated the moderating influences of SW on the risks of BD and sleep-related parameters and depressive symptoms. Furthermore, we evaluated the specific work schedules including daytime, nighttime, and regular and irregular rotating SW. An online survey was administered to 6665 participants, with 3379 (50.7 %) classified as individuals with high scores of Mood Disorder Questionnaire (MDQ). The survey included the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Insomnia Severity Scale (ISI), Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), and Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D). A multivariate regression model revealed significant interactive effects of MDQ positivity and SW on PSQI, ISI, and CES-D scores, but not ESS scores. In a secondary analysis of the high MDQ screen group, daytime workers had lower scores in sleep disturbances and depressive symptoms compared to those engaged in other forms of SW. Online surveys were accessible voluntarily, leading to potential selection bias. Cross-sectional data identified associations, not causal relationships. Only a self-reported questionnaire was used. Our findings emphasize the advantages of a daytime work schedule for individuals at high risk of BD. Breast cancer (BC) is the leading cause of cancer death among women worldwide. Women employed in shift jobs face heightened BC risk due to prolonged exposure to night shift work (NSW), classified as potentially carcinogenic by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). This risk is linked to disruptions in circadian rhythms governed by clock genes at the cellular level. However, the molecular mechanisms are unclear. This study aimed to assess clock genes as potential BC biomarkers among women exposed to long-term NSW. Clock gene expression was analysed in paired BC and normal breast tissues within Nurses' Health Studies I and II GEO datasets. Validation was performed on additional gene expression datasets from healthy night shift workers and women with varying BC susceptibility, as well as single-cell sequencing datasets. Post-transcriptional regulators of clock genes were identified through miRNA analyses. Significant alterations in clock gene expression in BC compared to normal tissues were found. BHLHE40, CIART, CLOCK, PDPK1, and TIMELESS were over-expressed, while HLF, NFIL3, NPAS3, PER1, PER3, SIM1, and TEF were under-expressed. The downregulation of PER1 and TEF and upregulation of CLOCK correlated with increased BC risk in healthy women. Also, twenty-six miRNAs, including miR-10a, miR-21, miR-107, and miR-34, were identified as potential post-transcriptional regulators influenced by NSW. In conclusion, a panel of clock genes and circadian miRNAs are suggested as BC susceptibility biomarkers among night shift workers, supporting implications for risk stratification and early detection strategies. Aims and Objective: To investigate the determinants of missed nursing care and to analyse the mediating effect of holistic nursing competence on the relationship between transition shock and missed nursing care. Background: Transition shock of newly graduated nurses is associated with missed nursing care. Previous studies have shown the determinants of missed nursing care among nurses, but little is known about the relationship between missed nursing care, transition shock and holistic nursing competence. Design: Descriptive and correlational design. Methods: The study was conducted among newly graduated nurses (n = 201) working in acute care hospitals for 1–12 months. The MISSCARE survey, Holistic Nursing Competence Scale and Nursing Transition Shock Scale were used for data collection, in addition to a sociodemographic question form. Data were analysed using Pearson correlation, multiple regression and mediation analyses. The study was reported following the STROBE checklist. Results: The determinants of missed nursing care among newly graduated nurses were sex, unit type, rotating shift work, holding a certificate, holistic nursing competence and transition shock. All these variables explain 35% of the variance in missed nursing care. Holistic nursing competence directly mediated 51.7% of the relationship between transition shock and missed nursing care. Conclusions: Holistic nursing competence may decrease missed nursing care by reducing the effects of transition shock on newly graduated nurses. Relevance to Clinical Practice: The study highlighted that newly graduated nurses are an important population regarding missed nursing care. The determinants of missed care should be considered in the nursing care delivery to prevent missed care by newly graduated nurses. Under total sleep deprivation, both inhibitory and motor control are impaired. However, how circadian rhythm sleep loss caused by irregular sleep pattern affects motor inhibition and execution in continuous actions remains unknown. This study utilized a pointing task to investigate the question over 30 days. During regular trials, participants were instructed to tap on a specified location, while in countermanding trials, they were required to countermand their current action. Additionally, there was a control group performed the same task following a normal 24-h rhythm. The results indicated that the decrease in accuracy and the increase in movement time in countermanding trials were more prominent in the shift work group. In contrast, there was no significant difference in reaction time between the two groups. Notably, the shift work group outperformed the control group in terms of movement time in regular trials and radial displacement in countermanding trials. Overall, these results show that circadian rhythm sleep loss predominantly affects inhibitory control, rather than motor control, underscoring the nuanced impacts of sleep disruption on differential aspects of cognitive and motor functions. Objective: Relative to explicit absenteeism, nurses' presenteeism has a more lasting impact and is more harmful and costly. This study aimed to explore the relationship between work-family conflict, perceived social support, and presenteeism and whether perceived social support mediates the relationship between work-family conflict and presenteeism among ICU nurses working on shifts in Chinese public hospitals. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional research design was conducted from January to April 2023 in Sichuan Province, China. A total of 609 valid questionnaires were collected. The questionnaires contained information on demographic characteristics, the Work-Family Conflict (WFC) scale, the Perceived Social Support Scale (PSSS), and Stanford Presenteeism Scale-6 (SPS-6). Multiple stratified regression was used to explore the mediating role of perceived social support between work-family conflict and presenteeism. The mediating effect of perceived social support in work-family conflict and presenteeism was tested by Model 4 in the PROCESS 4.1 macro program in SPSS. Results: A total of 609 nurses were included in this study, and the mean presenteeism score for ICU nurses working on shifts was 16.01 ± 4.293 (Mean ± SD), with high presenteeism accounting for 58.46%. After controlling for sociodemographic characteristic variables, work-family conflict was positively associated with presenteeism, explaining 7.7% of the variance. High perceived social support was related to low presenteeism, explaining 11.5% of the variance. Perceived social support mediated the association between work-family conflict and presenteeism among ICU nurses working on shifts. Conclusions: Chinese shift-work ICU nurses' high presenteeism scores deserve managers' attention. Work-family conflict is a significant predictor of nurses' presenteeism. Perceived social support is essential in improving nurses' work-family conflict and mediates the relationship between work-family conflict and presenteeism. The study aimed to determine and compare the mass concentration and size distribution of particulate matter (PM) at two Polish fire stations, one equipped with a washing machine intended for the decontamination of uniforms (FSN) and the other not equipped with this type of device (FSC), to assess the effectiveness of washing machines in reducing PM concentrations inside fire stations and estimate PM doses inhaled by firefighters while performing activities in truck bays and changing rooms during one work shift. The average PM concentrations at the FSN were 18.2–28.9 µg/m3 and 27.5–37.3 µg/m3, while at FSC they were 27.4–37.9 µg/m3 and 24.6–32.8 µg/m3 in the truck bays and changing rooms, respectively. At each measurement point, most of the PM mass (65–75%) was accumulated as fine particles. The dominance of fine particles in the total mass of PM results in high values of PM deposition coefficients (0.59–0.61) in three sections of the respiratory tract at each monitoring site. This study initially indicates the effectiveness of washing machines in reducing the concentration of fine particles and demonstrates the necessity, as well as directions for further research in this area. Background: Too much sedentary behavior (SB) and too little physical activity (PA) place adult workers at risk for chronic illness. It remains unclear which occupations and subgroups within occupations have the highest and lowest SB and PA, and little is known about the effects of organizational factors on these behaviors and metrics. Thus, our main aims were to review and summarize evidence describing daily SB and PA collected using accelerometry across various occupations and to identify organizational factors influencing SB and PA. Methods: A literature search of six databases was performed for relevant studies published through March 2023. Eligible studies were in English, targeted working populations, had a sample size > 75, and objectively measured both SB and PA for seven consecutive days using accelerometers. Following PRISMA guidelines, 5,197 studies were identified, and 19 articles met our inclusion criteria. Five of these studies were included in a meta-analysis comparing time spent in SB, light PA (LPA), and moderate to vigorous PA (MVPA) across occupations. Methodological quality was assessed using a Joanna Briggs Institute tool. Results: We found that 63% of the studies reported daily time spent in SB and in MVPA, but fewer reported LPA, moderate PA, and vigorous PA. The average time spent in SB was 553.34 min/day, in LPA was 299.77 min/day, and in MVPA was 33.87 min/day. In occupational subgroup analysis, we observed that office workers had 2.3 h more SB, 2.4 less hours LPA, and 14 min less MVPA per day than nurses. However, most studies either did not specify workers' occupations or grouped occupations. Shift work and workplace facilities significantly influenced SB and PA, but organizational factors affecting these behaviors were not sufficiently investigated (e.g., occupation type, work environment and workplace facilities, and shift work). Conclusions: More research is needed to explore SB and PA patterns within occupational subgroups. Additionally, it is important to explore work-related individual (e.g., job task), interpersonal (e.g., social support from colleagues), organizational (e.g., work policy), and environmental factors influencing SB and PA. Background & aims: Missed nursing care is a global challenge that can have many consequences and it's known as a common threat to the patient safety and quality of nursing care. The nurses' professional commitment plays the final role in the occurrence of this issue. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between nurses' professional commitment and missed nursing care in Iran. Materials & methods: This cross-sectional descriptive-analytical study was conducted on 270 nurses working in two hospitals affiliated to Tehran University of Medical Sciences (Sina & Shariati) from September to December 2023. The research community included all nurses working in medical-surgical wards in the designated hospitals. The research samples were included in a targeted and quota method after obtaining organizational permits, ethical approval and informed consent. Data collection was done using three questionnaires including demographic information form, Nursing Professional Commitment Scale, and MISSCARE Questionnaire. The collected data was analyzed in SPSS software, version 25. Results: The results of Pearson's correlation test showed that there is a significant negative relationship between nurses' professional commitment and missed nursing care scores (r=-0.23) (p < 0.001). The mean score of nurses' professional commitment was reported at a moderate to high level (83.72 ± 16.02) and the mean score of missed nursing care was reported at a low level (47.84 ± 16.48). Nurses over 40 years old, morning shift and employed nurses showed higher professional commitment. Also, nurses under 29 years old and male nurses had more missed nursing care other than their participants. No relationship was observed between other demographic variables with nurses' professional commitment and missed nursing care. Conclusion: The results of this study showed that higher nurses' professional commitment leads to higher quality of care and less missed nursing care. Based on findings of this research, it is recommended for health care providers and nursing managers to adopt programs to increase nurses' professional commitment and consequently reduce missed nursing care. This systematic review collected evidence on the burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) among professional drivers and reported on the most common factors that increase the risk of NCDs in this specific population in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The protocol for this systematic review was registered in the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO). We conducted a thorough search on PubMed/MEDLINE, EMBASE, Scopus, Global Health, Web of Science and Africa-wide information databases on 11 May 2023. We adapted the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) tool to assess the quality of the studies. We estimated the prevalence of hypertension, prediabetes, diabetes mellitus (DM), overweight and obesity among professional drivers using a random effect model to compute pooled and subgroup analyses. In addition, we conducted a narrative synthesis of the risk factors and recommendations presented in the included studies. Forty-one studies, including 48 414 study participants, met the criteria for inclusion. The pooled prevalence of hypertension, DM and obesity among professional drivers was 36.7% [95% confidence interval (CI): 31.8–41.6%], 15.2% (95% CI: 7.0–23.4%) and 27.2% (95% CI: 18.7–35.8%), respectively. Unsupportive environment, work stress, sedentary lifestyle, consumption of unhealthy foods and shift work were the most common modifiable risk factors reported. Our findings also show a significant burden of hypertension, DM and obesity among professional drivers in LMICs. The prevalence of DM and obesity was two- and three-fold higher than findings in general populations, respectively. Shift work tolerance (SWT) refers to the ability to adapt to shift work without significant adverse consequences. The present study aimed to examine the individual differences in SWT and their predictors and outcomes. Latent profile analyses were conducted using cross-sectional data collected form 448 Chinese male sailors who experienced a prolonged (>30 d) non-24-h rotating shift schedule at sea. Depression, anxiety, sleep disturbance, fatigue, domestic disruption, job satisfaction, work engagement, digestive and cardiovascular symptoms were included as indicators of SWT. The results showed that there existed 2 latent profiles of SWT named as High SWT group and Low SWT group. High SWT group was characterized by low levels on all negative bio-psycho-social outcomes but high levels of work engagement and job satisfaction, while Low SWT group exhibited completely opposite characteristics compared to High SWT group. The level of hardiness could predict profile membership that those with higher level of hardiness were more likely to belong to High SWT group. However, there were no significant differences observed in job performance between two groups. In conclusion, hardiness can serve as a predictor of personnel selection for shift work and hardiness-based intervention programs should be encouraged among the shift workers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Shift work is a prevalent workplace exposure, which increases the possibility of unhealthy behaviours and circadian rhythm disruptions and elevates the risk of metabolic diseases and adverse reproductive outcomes. But its potential of increasing the risk of postpartum weight retention remains uncertain. This study aimed to investigate the association between maternal shift work prior to conception and postpartum weight retention, and to identify modifiable factors during pregnancy for prevention. We analysed data from the Taiwan Birth Cohort Study, a prospective cohort of Taiwanese women who gave birth in 2005. We examined the pre-conceptional shift work status of 13,575 mothers and their body weight before pregnancy, before delivery, six and eighteen months after delivery. We used multivariable linear models to examine associations and effect modifications. Maternal shift work before pregnancy was significantly associated with increased postpartum weight retention at six and eighteen months (β-estimate for six months: 0.19-kilogram, 95% CI: 0.03–0.34; eighteen months: 0.23-kilogram, 95% CI: 0.04–0.40). The association between shift work and weight retention at six months postpartum was stronger among mothers who were overweight or obese before pregnancy than mothers with normal weight. Background: Nurses provide care to meet the complex needs of patients in the increasing workload in the health system and are at risk of compassion fatigue. The concept of compassion fatigue has begun drawing attention in the last decade, as it negatively affects nurses' physical and mental health, job performance and satisfaction, and therefore patient care quality. Objectives: This study was to examine compassion fatigue and predictive factors in paediatric surgery nurses. Participants and research context: The study was cross-sectional, predictive and quantitative. It was conducted with the 135 paediatric surgery nurses. The data were sent to the email addresses of the members via Google Survey. Research data were collected with the Nurse Information Form, Compassion Fatigue Scale, Life Satisfaction Scale and Multidimensional Perceived Social Support Scale. Ethical considerations: After obtaining the approval of the University's ethics committee, the study was carried out after obtaining participants' informed written and verbal consent. Results: There was a difference between the level of compassion fatigue according to the paediatric surgery unit that worked the longest and the thought of changing their profession. Burn unit nurses and nurses who were considering changing professions have higher compassion fatigue scores. When the predictors of compassion fatigue were examined, the thought of changing the nursing profession and life satisfaction were significant predictors of compassion fatigue. The thought of changing the nursing profession and life satisfaction explained 22% of compassion fatigue. The same variables and the longest working period of the paediatric surgery unit were the estimators of the level of occupational burnout; explaining 29% of occupational burnout. Conclusions: Compassion fatigue, life satisfaction and perceived social support of paediatric surgery nurses are moderate. Background: In this study, we hypothesized that safety footwear (SF) impacts gait patterns, potentially contributing to the podiatric symptoms reported by workers. The purpose of this work was to compare the gait analyses of workers wearing SF and sneakers using inertial sensors while also examining the occurrence of foot problems. Methods: A consecutive cohort of workers from different occupational sectors who wore SF during their work shifts were prospectively assessed through a gait analysis. The gait analysis was conducted under two conditions: first, while wearing SF, and second, while wearing sneakers. In both conditions, inertial sensors were used (Wiva® MOB). Participants also underwent a podiatric physical examination to evaluate foot problems. Results: This study shows that SF resulted in a worsening gait pattern compared to sneakers in both genders. The impact was particularly pronounced in female participants, resulting in a significant decline in walking speed and cadence. Discomfort was reported by 83.3% of participants, with a higher prevalence in females (46.6% vs. 36.6%). The SF group exhibited an elevated prevalence of foot problems, with no significant gender variations. It seems that foot problems are more likely to occur when a foot deformity, such as flat or cavus foot or hallux valgus, is present. Conclusions: This study suggests that SF may contribute to the reported podiatric symptoms among workers. Certain footwear characteristics, including weight, mis-fit, and inadequate design, may be factors associated with footwear discomfort and adverse gait patterns, potentially leading to increased foot problems among workers. Hand-arm vibration is a common occupational exposure that causes neurological impairment,myalgia, and vibrationinduced Raynaud's phenomena or vibration white fingers (VWF). The pathological mechanism is largely unknown, though several mechanisms have been proposed, involving both immunological vascular damage and defective neural responses. The aim of this study was to test whether the substances interleukin-33 (IL-33), macrophage-derived chemokine (MDC), interleukin-10 (IL-10), endothelin-1 (ET-1), C-C motif chemokine ligand 20 (CCL20), calcitonin, and thromboxane (TXA2) changed before and after occupational hand-arm vibration exposure. 38 full-time shift workers exposed to hand-arm vibration were recruited. All the participants underwent medical examinations regarding symptoms of Raynaud's phenomena. In 29 of the participants, the concentration of IL-33, MDC, IL-10, ET- 1, CCL20, calcitonin, and TXA2 was measured before and after a workday. There was a significant increase in ET-1 and calcitonin concentration and a decrease in the CCL20 concentration after the work shift in all participants. In the group suffering from VWF, but not in the non-VWF group, MDC was statistically significantly lower before the work shift (p = .023). The VWF group also showed a significant increase in MDC after the work shift. Exposure to occupational hand-arm vibration is associated with changes in ET-1, calcitonin, and MDC concentration in subjects suffering from vibration white fingers, suggesting a role of these biomarkers in the pathophysiology of this condition. Introduction: Employees working in shifts are exposed to many threats affecting their health, quality of life and safety at work. Those who perform their work only at night are particularly vulnerable. The purpose of the review is to identify risks to the health, quality of life and sleep of shift health workers. Method: A systematic review (SR) was used in the analysis. Electronic databases were searched. The search was limited to the latest studies published in the last five years: 2019–2023. Results: Finally, 36 articles were included in the review. Most authors have shown a link between sleep disturbance or its quality and shift work/night work. Moreover, a three-shift schedule was the most significant factor for poorer subjective sleep quality when compared to other work schedules. Furthermore, many authors have shown a link between shift/night work and health problems, which include cardiometabolic risk, glucose intolerance, breast cancer and immune vulnerability. Conclusions: The research results clearly show a significant impact of night work on the increased risk of sleep disorders and health disturbance. Healthcare workers should be aware of the risks associated with night work in order to take measures preventing sleep/health problems. Objective: To understand shift-level determinants of emergency physician (EP) burnout, relationships were tested between EP shift demands, stress, and fatigue. Method: EP ( n = 16) were assessed over 114 shifts that occurred before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Salivary cortisol (an indicator of stress) and self-reported fatigue were collected prior to and following each shift. An objective crowding score (National Emergency Department Overcrowding Scale) per shift was calculated. Shift demands were assessed at the end of each shift. Results: Multilevel models revealed that shift demands, National Emergency Department Overcrowding Scale, and the pandemic were related to higher levels of end-of-shift cortisol, but not fatigue. Cortisol levels were higher for shifts with a higher number of demands, greater crowding, and during the pandemic. Conclusions: Shift demands predicted objective indicators of stress, but not self-reported fatigue. Interventions are needed to decrease stress and shift demands to reduce EP burnout. Purpose: The sleep quality of police officers working in shifts is negatively affected due to long working hours and sleeping less during the day. In our study, we aimed to examine the differences in sleep quality and time management skills in police officers working with shift and non-shift system. Methods: 106 police officers, 46 of whom worked in the shift system, 60 of whom worked in the non-shift system, and whose mean age was 27.6 ± 0.9 [min 20, max 40] were included in the study. Sleep quality was assessed with the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index[PSQI] and time management skills with the Time Management Questionnaire[TMQ]. Results: While the TMQ total score was 80.91 ± 12.61 for police officers working in shifts, it was 72.41 ± 12.62 for police officers working non-shift. The PSQI total score was 5 in both groups. There was a difference between the TMQ time planning, TMQ time attitudes sub-dimensions, and TMQ total scores of police officers working in the shift system and those working in the non-shift system[p < 0.05]. While poor sleep quality was observed between both groups, there was no difference in sleep quality[p > 0.05]. Conclusion: There was no difference in sleep quality between police officers working in shifts and non-shifts. However, the time management skills of police officers working in shifts were better than those of police officers working in non-shifts. We believe that training programs to improve sleep health and time management skills in police officers are needed for both the sleep quality and well-being of police officers and public safety. Aim: To identify occupational conditions associated with anxiety and fatigue among Korean nurses in early pregnancy. Background: Pregnant nurses, like non‐pregnant hospital nurses, are exposed to dangerous and stressful work environments, which can affect fatigue and anxiety. Design and Methods: This cross‐sectional study enrolled 1490 nurses who participated in the early pregnancy module in the Korea Nurses' Health Study between 2014 and 2020. Hierarchical linear regression analyses were employed to identify the factors associated with anxiety and fatigue among nurses in early pregnancy. Results: One‐fifth of participants were working night shifts, and more than two‐thirds were working overtime. When using antineoplastic drugs and disinfectants, the rate of use of protective equipment varied depending on the size of the hospital. Working overtime and lifting heavy objects were associated with increased anxiety and fatigue among nurses. Conclusion: Overtime work was associated with both anxiety and fatigue among pregnant nurses. Pregnant hospital nurses were exposed to both night shift and overtime work. Therefore, hospital managers should improve hazardous working environments to protect the health of nurses in early pregnancy and their fetuses. Nurses in early pregnancy are exposed to work environments that can affect their reproductive health.The relationship between mental health and work environment among nurses in early pregnancy is poorly understood. Background: Advanced Nurse Practitioners (ANPs) are highly skilled health care professionals with the potential to play a major role in improving the quality and accessibility of health care services. However, there is emerging evidence of disquiet among nurse practitioners who often work in suboptimal work environments. Therefore, it is important to understand the elements that contribute to ANPs' job satisfaction and retention in healthcare services. Aim: To examine the effects of commitment to the workplace, work engagement, and influence at work on job satisfaction and intention to leave of ANPs. Methods: A total of 153 ANP's on the advanced practice section of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland register completed a web survey between July and August 2020. Independent variables (commitment to the workplace, work engagement, and influence at work) were measured using the Copenhagen Psychosocial Questionnaire (COPSOQ). Multivariable logistic regression models were used to investigate the association between dependent and independent variables. Results: Participants who reported higher levels of influence at work and higher levels of commitment to the workplace were also satisfied in their job (OR 1.05, 95% CI 1.01-1.09, p = 0.025), (OR 1.10, 95% CI 1.06–1.14, p < 0.001) respectively. Additionally, ANPs with higher levels of commitment to work were significantly less likely to leave their role (OR 0.94, 95% CI.92–.96, p < 0.001). Conclusion: Healthcare organisations can improve job satisfaction and decrease intention to leave by creating environments in which ANPs are supported by their colleagues and supervisors, and facilitate their practice to the full extent of their capabilities. Summary: It has been demonstrated that shift work can affect cognitive functions. Several neuroimaging studies have revealed altered brain function and structure for patients with shift work disorder (SWD). However, knowledge on the dysfunction of large‐scale brain networks underlying cognitive impairments in shift work disorder is limited. This study aims to identify altered functional networks associated with cognitive declines in shift work disorder, and to assess their potential diagnostic value. Thirty‐four patients with shift work disorder and 36 healthy controls (HCs) were recruited to perform the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS) and resting‐state functional scans. After surface‐based preprocessing, we calculated within‐ and between‐network functional connectivity (FC) using the Dosenbach atlas. Moreover, correlation analysis was done between altered functional connectivity of large‐scale brain networks and scores of cognitive assessments in patients with shift work disorder. Finally, we established a classification model to provide features for patients with shift work disorder concerning the disrupted large‐scale networks. Compared with healthy controls, increased functional connectivity within‐networks across the seven brain networks, and between‐networks involving ventral attention network (VAN)‐subcortical network (SCN), SCN‐frontoparietal network (FPN), and somatosensory network (SMN)‐SCN were observed in shift work disorder. Decreased functional connectivity between brain networks was found in shift work disorder compared with healthy controls, including visual network (VN)‐FPN, VN‐default mode network (DMN), SMN‐DMN, dorsal attention network (DAN)‐DMN, VAN‐DMN, and FPN‐DMN. Furthermore, the altered functional connectivity of large‐scale brain networks was significantly correlated with scores of immediate memory, visuospatial, and delayed memory in patients with shift work disorder, respectively. Abnormal functional connectivity of large‐scale brain networks may play critical roles in cognitive dysfunction in shift work disorder. Background: Unpaid overtime—describing a situation where extra hours are worked but not paid for—is a common feature of the labor market that, together with other forms of wage theft, costs workers billions of dollars annually. In this study, we examine the association between unpaid overtime and mental health in the Canadian working population. We also assess the relative strength of that association by comparing it against those of other broadly recognized work stressors. Methods: Data were drawn from a survey administered to a heterogeneous sample of workers in Canada (n = 3691). Generalized linear models quantified associations between unpaid overtime, stress, and burnout, distinguishing between moderate (1−5) and excessive (6 or more) hours of unpaid overtime. Results: Unpaid overtime was associated with higher levels of stress and burnout. Relative to those working no unpaid overtime, men working excessive unpaid overtime were 85% more likely to report stress (prevalence ratios [PR]: 1.85, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.26−2.72) and 84% more likely to report burnout (PR: 1.84, 95% CI: 1.34−2.54), while women working excessive unpaid overtime were 90% more likely to report stress (PR: 1.90, 95% CI: 1.32−2.75) and 52% more likely to report burnout (PR: 1.52; 95% CI: 1.12−2.06). The association of excessive unpaid overtime with mental health was comparable in magnitude to that of shift work and low job control. Conclusions: Unpaid overtime may present a significant challenge to the mental health of working people, highlighting the potential role of wage theft as a neglected occupational health hazard. Background: Oncology nurses support cancer patients in meeting their self-care needs, often neglecting their own emotions and self-care needs. This study aims to investigate the variations in the five facets of holistic mindfulness among Italian oncology nurses based on gender, work experience in oncology, and shift work. Method: A cross-sectional study was carried out in 2023 amongst all registered nurses who were employed in an oncology setting and working in Italy. Results: There were no significant differences in all five facets of holistic mindfulness (p ≥ 0.05) according to gender, work experience in the oncology field, and shift work. Conclusion: Could holistic mindfulness be defined as an intrinsic individual characteristic? Surely, more insights will be necessary to better define the holistic trend in oncology nursing. BACKGROUND: Firefighter health is of utmost importance both to first responders and the individuals they serve daily. The impact of shift schedule on firefighter health remains poorly understood. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to examine differences in health and performance outcomes in firefighters across two different shift schedules. METHODS: Firefighter (N = 1995) body composition, muscular strength, endurance, flexibility, and cardiorespiratory endurance were assessed and described. A Mann-Whitney U test was conducted to compare differences between shift schedules (48/96 and 4's and 6's). RESULTS: There was a statistically significant difference in BMI (U = 70115, z=–1.988, p =.047), BF% (U = 67341, z=–2.779, p =.005), and trunk flexion score (U = 81362, z = 1.979, p =.048) favoring the 48/96 shift schedule. CONCLUSION: Firefighters following a 48/96 shift schedule exhibited improved body composition and fitness performance in comparison to peers who followed a 4's and 6's shift schedule. Air purifier use, shift work, and long-term exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) are linked to platelet abnormality. However, the role of air purifier use and shift work in the individual or joint associations of PM2.5 and its components with platelet indices are largely unknown. A total of 8772 participants were recruited from a population of subway workers in China. PM2.5 and its component data were obtained from the Tracking Air Pollution in China dataset. The role of air purifier use and shift work in the association between PM2.5 and its components and platelet indices were analyzed. Among shift workers without air purifier use, positive associations of PM2.5 and each component in PM2.5 with the mean platelet volume (MPV) or platelet counts (PLT) were observed, whereas negative associations of PM2.5 and each component in PM2.5 with the platelet distribution width (PDW) were observed. Furthermore, estimated changes (95%CIs) in PLT, MPV, and PDW in response to each 10th percentile increment in the mixture of PM2.5 and its components were 0.8657 (0.2496, 1.4819), 0.0192 (0.0054, 0.0329), and −0.0648 (−0.0945, −0.0351), respectively, and sulfate in PM2.5 was the major contributor to those associations. Long-term exposure to PM2.5 and its components was related to increased platelet disorders among shift workers without air purifier use, and those associations were mainly attributed to sulfate in PM2.5.
