This study analyzes circumstances tied to the implementation of the Dayton Agreement's provision for the reunification of Sarajevo. Three months after the signing, Sarajevo was again a united city territorially, but pre-war inhabitants of Sarajevo who identified themselves as Serbs were almost entirely absent from the reunited town under the control of the Federation government. This article addresses the causes of the flight of the Serbs, who had been living in Sarajevo's suburbs before the start of the Bosnian war and stayed, in their view, to defend their homes. I argue that the incentives that led a majority of Sarajevan Serbs to leave the city and its surroundings were the result of actions not only of the Serb leadership but also of Bosniak leaders and the international community. Our analysis is complementary to the scholarship examining the impact of massive population migrations and displacement in the aftermath of conflicts. I analyze the dynamics of Sarajevo's unification within the Federation and its consequences, demonstrating that once a partition is accepted at a higher level, it is almost impossible to prevent its emergence on a local level. The author examines museums in Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and their exhibitions dealing with the city's most traumatic event in recent history—the 1992-1995 siege. She analyses how the interpretations and re-interpretations of history in these museums have been affected by social, political, cultural, and institutional contexts, and how various 'memory entrepreneurs' have played a role in building the public memory of the city's siege. The analysis focuses on, but is not limited to, three museums: the History Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Tunnel Museum, and the War Childhood Museum. This discussion is supplemented by an analysis of other museums in Sarajevo that also demonstrate how the political deadlock in the country has affected the cultural sector. The author argues that the various museums to have opened in Sarajevo in recent years indeed have the potential to become crucial public spaces where authoritative notions of history, memory, and identity can be critically examined, negotiated, and contested. At 10:30 in the morning on 28 June 1992, a Dauphin helicopter landed at Sarajevo airport carrying a precious cargo: the French president, François Mitterrand. Since the beginning of the Bosnian War, Bosnian Serb forces had controlled the airport and restricted the delivery of humanitarian aid to the city’s destitute population, which formed an important cornerstone of their siege strategy. In reaching the airport, the president secured its re-opening and, with it, the commencement of one of the longest humanitarian airlifts in history. However, Mitterrand’s visit also had implications and significance beyond the Bosnian capital. The visit secured humanitarian intervention through the United Nations as the international community’s modus operandi for conflict resolution in Bosnia-Hercegovina. Through its permanent membership of the United Nations Security Council and enthusiastic engagement with humanitarian intervention, France would shape the intervention in Bosnia-Hercegovina and thus continue to justify its position amongst the world’s Great Powers. This article explores agonistic processes of peace, which are situated within and constitutive of different spaces and places. Three contested cities, Sarajevo, Mostar and Višegrad in Bosnia-Herzegovina, provide us with local sites where peace and peace building in various forms ‘take place’ as people come together in collective action. Through a close reading of three symbolically and materially important bridges in the towns, we reveal meaning-making processes, as agentive subjects struggle around competing claims in the post-conflict everyday world. The collective, situated and fleeting agency that we explore through the Arendtian notion of ‘space of appearance’ invests space with meaning, belonging and identity. Thus, this article grapples with agonistic peace as it manifests itself in materiality and spatial practices. We use the social and material spaces of the city to locate agency and agonism in peace building as they relate to the conflict legacy in Mostar, Višegrad and Sarajevo in order to advance the critical peace research agenda. After the violent wars of the 1990s, Bosnia and Herzegovina is heavily promoting its tourism industry with the capital city of Sarajevo as the prime destination. Sarajevo became a city of death during 1992–1995, and its siege remains etched in local and global memories as a time of bombing, horrific shelling of locals, and brutal destruction of the city's cultural heritage. Today Sarajevo faces many dilemmas, including how to remember the 1990s trauma and how to represent the city to citizens and foreign visitors. Here we explore how Sarajevo journalists remember the city's recent violent conflict, and how war memory becomes commodified and branded for tourism. Furthermore, we analyse how prominent global media represent Sarajevo as a tourism destination after the war. On the basis of in-depth interviews with Sarajevo journalists, and an analysis of travel reviews in prominent international publications, we argue that Sarajevo is a place where branding and memories converge. Sarajevo is transformed into a tourist attraction where trauma of the past is being sold, while promising some authentic path towards understanding the violent past. Local journalists and global media alike frame the city as a “brand” while celebrating the inherent authenticity of post-war travel in order to promote and sell Sarajevo. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Social networks of Sarajevo Roses, the red resin-filled mortar scars memorializing civilian casualties of the siege of Sarajevo, reveal a transient community of memory comprising locals and foreigners who blog. With the concurrent return of tourism to the former Yugoslavia and the mainstream adoption of blogs and Flickr, a network including photographs of Roses, rough-hewn 'Don't Forget' memorials in Mostar, and the 'Do Not' mural in Srebrenica was created. Here, stories of social divisions in the once-celebrated plural society of Yugoslavia are exchanged, amplifying civilian countermemorials to the conflict. Applying critical analysis to the blog entries as visual evidence, this article uncovers characteristics contributing to the reshaping of public memory with ongoing activity, forms of evidence, and reinterpreted information. This article explores the points of intersection between the discourses of modern warfare and postmodernist poetics in Semezdin Mehmedinovlić's collection Sarajevo blues. It begins by considering Mehemdinović's own appraisal of the Sarajevo siege (1992-95) as an economy in which documentation of the conflict interacts and colludes with the war itself. It subsequently analyses the formal attributes by which the author's poems and prose pieces contemplate the amorality or the immorality of producing art in a war zone, of aestheticizing death and ruin but also of commodifying it through kitsch. This article focuses on the ways in which Dutch peacekeepers in Bosnia (SFOR8) and Kosovo (KFOR2) in 1999-2000 perceived local populations and host countries. It analyses the tension between military combat socialization and peacekeeping missions through ethnographic fieldwork and by borrowing tools from tourism and expatriate theories. Derived from the 'tourist space' concept, soldiers construct a spurious 'peacekeeping space', which confirms their combat and masculine beliefs that the contrived images which the military establishment has created in the first place are borne out by the reality of the deployment. The term “warchitecture” emerged in Sarajevo as a name for the catastrophic destruction of architecture during the 1992–1996 siege of the city. Blurring the conceptual border between “war” and “architecture,” the term provides a tool to critique dominant accounts of wartime architectural destruction and to bring the interpretive protocols of architecture to bear upon that destruction. Reflection on warchitecture can therefore open up new ways to examine and understand violence against architecture and to connect this violence with emergent discussions of war, violence, and modernity in and across other disciplines. The article reveals the use of rape as a weapon war in Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzegovina. The experience of Sreko Simic, considered one of Bosnia's leading gynaecologists, of delivering babies at Saravejo's Univeristy Hospital during the war is recounted. It discusses the emergence of war-related victims of rape and other sexual abuses 15 years after the signing of the 1995 Dayton Accords.
