Abstract

A graph database is a digraph whose arcs are labeled with symbols from a fixed alphabet. A regular graph pattern (RGP) is a digraph whose edges are labeled with regular expressions over the alphabet. RGPs model navigational queries for graph databases called conjunctive regular path queries (CRPQs). A match of a CRPQ in the database is witnessed by a special navigational homomorphism of the corresponding RGP to the database. We study the complexity of deciding the existence of a homomorphism between two RGPs. Such homomorphisms model a strong type of containment between the two corresponding CRPQs. We show that this problem can be solved by an EXPTIME algorithm (while general query containmement in this context is EXPSPACE-complete). We also study the problem for restricted RGPs over a unary alphabet, that arise from some applications like XPath or SPARQL. For this case, homomorphism-based CRPQ containment is in NP. We prove that certain interesting cases are in fact polynomial-time solvable., 15 pages. Short version appeared in the proceedings of the 15th Conference on Computability in Europe (CIE 2019)

Abstract

Given a matching between n red points and n blue points by line segments in the plane, we consider the problem of obtaining a crossing-free matching through flip operations that replace two crossing segments by two non-crossing ones. We first show that (i) it is NP-hard to alpha-approximate the shortest flip sequence, for any constant alpha. Second, we show that when the red points are colinear, (ii) given a matching, a flip sequence of length at most n(n-1)/2 always exists, and (iii) the number of flips in any sequence never exceeds (n(n-1)/2) (n+4)/6. Finally, we present (iv) a lower bounding flip sequence with roughly 1.5 n(n-1)/2 flips, which shows that the n(n-1)/2 flips attained in the convex case are not the maximum, and (v) a convex matching from which any flip sequence has roughly 1.5 n flips. Abstract

International audience; A set of segments in the plane may form a Euclidean TSP tour or a matching, among others. Optimal TSP tours as well as minimum weight perfect matchings have no crossing segments, but several heuristics and approximation algorithms may produce solutions with crossings. To improve such solutions, we can successively apply a flip operation that replaces a pair of crossing segments by non-crossing ones. This paper considers the maximum number D(n) of flips performed on n segments. First, we present reductions relating D(n) for different sets of segments (TSP tours, monochromatic matchings, red-blue matchings, and multigraphs). Second, we show that if all except t points are in convex position, then D(n) = O(tn^2), providing a smooth transition between the convex O(n^2) bound and the general O(n^3) bound. Last, we show that if instead of counting the total number of flips, we only count the number of distinct flips, then the cubic upper bound improves to O(n^8/3).

Abstract

CG:SHOP is an annual geometric optimization challenge and the 2022 edition proposed the problem of coloring a certain geometric graph defined by line segments. Surprisingly, the top three teams used the same technique, called conflict optimization. This technique has been introduced in the 2021 edition of the challenge, to solve a coordinated motion planning problem. In this paper, we present the technique in the more general framework of binary constraint satisfaction problems (binary CSP). Then, the top three teams describe their different implementations of the same underlying strategy. Abstract

This paper describes the heuristics used by the Shadoks team for the CG:SHOP 2021 challenge. This year's problem is to coordinate the motion of multiple robots in order to reach their targets without collisions and minimizing the makespan. It is a classical multi agent path finding problem with the specificity that the instances are highly dense in an unbounded grid. Using the heuristics outlined in this paper, our team won first place with the best solution to 202 out of 203 instances and optimal solutions to at least 105 of them. The main ingredients include several different strategies to compute initial solutions coupled with a heuristic called Conflict Optimizer to reduce the makespan of existing solutions., Comment: Journal version to appear on ACM Journal on Algorithmics

Abstract

Purpose The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of the free choice of ultrasound propagation velocity on ultrasound image construction to improve the completion rate and anatomical quality of fetal second-trimester ultrasound examination in obese women. Materials and methods This repeated cross-sectional single-center study retrospectively collected second-trimester ultrasound images of 88 obese women. During the first period, ultrasound examinations were performed in 44 women (mean age, 31.4 ± 5.9 [SD] years; range: 21.1 - 45.3 years) applying only the standard 1540 m/s tissue ultrasound velocity (group 1). During the second period, ultrasound examinations were performed in other 44 women (mean age, 31.4 ± 5.1 [SD] years; range: 20.6 - 41.6 years) with the operator free to choose among three available velocity settings (1420 m/s, 1480 m/s or 1540 m/s) for the scanning planes for the morphological images (group 2). All women underwent mid-trimester ultrasound examination at 20 to 24 gestational weeks. Two observers assessed the examinations in both groups for completeness, quality, and duration of fetal ultrasound examinations. Results No differences in age (P > 0.99), body mass index (P = 0.67), prevalence of previous cesarean delivery (P = 0.30) or gestational age at the second-trimester scan (P = 0.20) were found between the two groups. The mean cumulative duration of these ultrasound examinations was longer in group 1 than in group 2 (for both the complete (P = 0.04) and incomplete (P = 0.03) examinations). The quality of the anatomic images according to Salomon's criteria was less often acceptable in group 1 (5/44, 11.4%) than in group 2 (15/44, 34.1%) (P = 0.02). Conclusion Free choice of ultrasound velocity improves the overall performance of fetal second-trimester ultrasound examinations in obese women.

Abstract

This paper concerns an optimization method applied to the design for manufacturing (DFM) of aircraft structural parts. Today, the aerospace industry has to produce aircraft less and less costly. Usual design and manufacturing process are not sufficiently efficient. A dedicated DFM method ensures that all manufacturing requirements are taken into account at the design stage. However, all requirements cannot be satisfied together; thus the best compromise must be found. The proposed approach is based on the formulation of 5 design and manufacturing performance indicators to be satisfied. From the geometrical modelling of the problem, an NSGA II genetic algorithm computes a population of one thousand permissible solutions. Thus, a decision process is applied to identify the best compromise according to the behaviour of the decision maker, using Topsis and the AHP method. This methodology is applied in an industrial context to an aircraft structural part manufactured by stamping and machining. The optimal part geometry is then calculated for three different airplane configurations. Such tests are used to extract geometric design rules. In addition, the paper highlights the impact of the user’s behaviour on the computed results.

Abstract

International audience; Data of quasi-specular reflection of cold neutrons, prompt-γ neutron analysis, X-ray Raman scattering (XRS), and neutron pair distribution function (PDF) analysis with powder of detonation nanodiamonds are analyzed to collect their structural properties and chemical composition. Both as-synthesized and purified samples were studied using fluorination samples. Removal of both the sp2 amorphous carbon shell and the hydrogen atoms is evidenced respectively by the change of neutron-nuclei optical potentials of nanoparticles and the increase of their neutron reflectivity. Moreover, sp3 diamond cores of nanoparticles stay intact during the fluorination as revealed by similar scattering patterns, PDF, and XRS data. Quasi-specular reflection, PDF, and XRS data are complementary for the study of nanomaterials and in good agreement with conventional characterization techniques (infrared spectroscopy and solid-state NMR).

Abstract

International audience; Finding the current pose of the end-effector of a parallel robot is a problem, since its forward geometric model generally has several solutions. Current methods to address this problem operate mainly under the assumption that the robot never changes its assembly mode nor gets close to Type 2 singularities. Nonetheless, recent works proved that a parallel robot can change its assembly mode thanks to dedicated trajectory generation and control. Such a feature allows increasing the operational workspace of such manipulators. Hence tracking correctly the end-effector pose while crossing Type 2 singularities, is mandatory for a practical usage of this workspace enhancement method. However, on Type 2 singularities several solutions of the forward geometric model merge, making current tracking methods ineffective. To fill this gap, we propose a two-step pose-tracking methodology: First, a differential inclusion based on kinematics and dynamics is solved. Second, joint measurements are used to tighten resulting enclosures. The effectiveness of this method is discussed thanks to experimental data gathered on a planar parallel robot.

Abstract

International audience; Recently, iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) have gathered special attention in regenerative medicine. Owing to their magnetic and bioactive properties, IONPs are utilized in the fabrication of novel biomaterials. Yet, there was no report regarding thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) and poly(lactic acid) (PLA) polymer doped with IONPs on osteogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells. Thus the objectives of presented study was to: (a) fabricate magnetic TPU + PLA sponges doped with iron (III) oxide Fe2O3 nanoparticles; (b) investigate the effects of biomaterial and its exposition to static magnetic field (MF) on osteogenic differentiation, proliferation, and apoptosis in adipose‐derived mesenchymal stem cells (ASCs). TPU + PLA sponges were prepared using solvent casting technique while incorporation of the Fe2O3 nanoparticles was performed with solution cast method. RT‐PCR was applied to evaluate expression of osteogenic‐related genes and integrin's in cells cultured on fabricated materials with or without the stimulation of static MF. MF stimulation enhanced the expression of osteopontin and collagen type I while decreased expression of bone morphogenetic protein 2 in tested magnetic materials—TPU + PLA/1% Fe2O3 and TPU + PLA/5% Fe2O3. Therefore, TPU + PLA sponges doped with IONPs and exposure to MF resulted in improved osteogenic differentiation of ASC.

Abstract

International audience; Background: The aim of this study is to demonstrate that a double balloon catheter combined with oxytocin decreases time between induction of labor and delivery (TID) as compared to a vaginal dinoprostone insert in cases of premature rupture of membranes at term. Methods: This is a prospective, randomized, controlled trial including patient undergoing labor induction for PROM at term with an unfavorable cervix in Clermont-Ferrand university hospital. We compared the double balloon catheter over a period of 12 h with adjunction of oxytocin 6 h after catheter insertion versus dinoprostone vaginal insert. After device ablation, cervical ripening continued only with oxytocin. The main outcome was TID. Secondary outcomes concerned delivery mode, as well as maternal and fetal outcome, and were adjusted for parity. Results: 40 patients per group were randomized. Each group had similar baseline characteristics. The study failed to demonstrate reduced TID (16.2 versus 20.2 h, ES = 0.16 (−0.27 to 0.60), p = 0.12) in the catheter group versus dinoprostone except in nulliparous women (17.0 versus 26.5 h, ES = 0.62 (0.10 to 1.14), p = 0.006). The rate of vaginal delivery 0.05), chorioamnionitis (0% versus 2.5%, p = 1), postpartum endometritis, or maternal or neonatal outcomes. Procedure-related pain and tolerance to devices were found to be similar for the two methods. Interpretation: The double balloon catheter combined with oxytocin is an alternative for cervical ripening in case of PROM at term, and may reduce TID in nulliparous women.

Abstract

Telomeres protect chromosome ends and control cell division and senescence. During organogenesis, telomeres need to be long enough to ensure the cell proliferation necessary at this stage of development. Previous studies have shown that telomere shortening is associated with growth retardation and congenital malformations. However, these studies were performed in newborns or postnatally, and data on telomere length (TL) during the prenatal period are still very limited. We measured TL using quantitative PCR in amniotic fluid (AF) and chorionic villi (CV) samples from 69 control fetuses with normal ultrasound (52 AF and 17 CV) and 213 fetuses (165 AF and 48 CV) with intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) or congenital malformations diagnosed by ultrasound. The samples were collected by amniocentesis at the gestational age (GA) of 25.0 ± 5.4 weeks and by CV biopsy at 18.1 ± 6.3 weeks. In neither sample type was TL influenced by GA or fetal sex. Abstract

International audience; Topological physics relies on the existence of Hamiltonian's eigenstate singularities carrying a topological charge, such as quantum vortices, Dirac points, Weyl points and -- in non-Hermitian systems -- exceptional points (EPs), lines or surfaces. They appear only in pairs connected by a Fermi arc and are related to a Hermitian singularity, such as a Dirac point. The annihilation of 2D Dirac points carrying opposite charges has been experimentally reported. It remained elusive for Weyl points and second order EPs terminating different Fermi arcs. Here, we observe the annihilation of second order EPs issued from different Dirac points forming distinct valleys. We study a liquid crystal microcavity with voltage-controlled birefringence and TE-TM photonic spin-orbit-coupling. Two neighboring modes can be described by a two-band Hermitian Hamiltonian showing two topological phases with either two same-sign or four opposite-sign Dirac points (valleys). Non-Hermiticity is provided by polarization-dependent losses, which split Dirac points into pairs of EPs, connected by Fermi arcs. We measure their topological charges and control their displacement in reciprocal space by increasing the non-Hermiticity degree. EPs of opposite charges from different valleys meet and annihilate, connecting in a closed line the different Fermi arcs. This non-Hermitian topological transition occurs only when the Hermitian part of the Hamiltonian is topologically trivial (with four valleys), but is distinct from the Hermitian transition. Our results offer new perspectives of versatile manipulation of EPs, opening the new field of non-Hermitian valley-physics.

Abstract

While academic achievement has been associated with physical activity, the present work questions the potential association between the physical fitness level of adolescents and the type of school they attend, ranging from academic to technical schools. 20,228 young French students from 76 schools (9,196 females), mean age 15.8±1.8 years, performed the Diagnoform© test. This dataset includes two higher education institutions (n=870), 37 general high schools (n=13,125), 18 professional-oriented high schools (n=3,569), 5 agricultural high schools (n=132), 2 vocational training centers (n=202) and 12 rural vocational training centers (n=1,137). In higher education institutions and general high schools, girls showed better performances for all physical tests. Abstract

Management difficulties for monochorionic monoamniotic (MCMA) twin pregnancy reflect the absence of high-quality research into optimal types of monitoring, essential as MCMA twins have a high risk of intrauterine and neonatal death with perinatal mortality. D'Antonio et al's meta-analysis and the MonoMono study published in 2019, investigated the impact of monitoring location, out- or in-patient, of MCMA pregnancies and concluded that no specific management location is associated with improvement in prognosis. To evaluate the optimal timing for delivery of MCMA pregnancies, Van Mieghem and Chitrit carried out retrospective studies comparing gestational age of intrauterine death and risk of neonatal complication. The crossover point between the propective risk of intrauterine fetal death and neonatal complication was found at 32,33 weeks of gestation (WG), in accordance with American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists recommendations but inclusion of complicated pregnancies and analysis of fetuses individually may be regarded as a bias. The majority of studies of MCMA pregnancies focused on elective scheduled cesareans, with only rare retrospective studies reporting on vaginal delivery. Of these, two recent studies carried out by French teams suggest that vaginal deliveries may be as safe as cesarean births for MCMA twin pregnancies when specific criteria are met. In summary, concerning MCMA pregnancies, prognosis is not found to improve with inpatient management, optimal timing for delivery is at approximately 33 GW and vaginal delivery should not be excluded.

Abstract

International audience; Bio-based materials such as straw are becoming a promising alternative to improve the building energy performance and to reduce its carbon footprint. When compared to common building construction materials, bio-based materials control the temperature and the relative humidity variation to ameliorate the indoor comfort with a low embodied energy and CO2 emission. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the thermal and mechanical properties of straw-based materials and buildings. The objective is to synthesis the work that has been carried out by the research community and to compare the results. The paper first introduces straw bale as a construction material from a historical viewpoint and in the context of the current building sector. The second part focuses on the available chemical and microstructural data of the straw fiber. The third part refers to the thermophysical and mechanical properties of the bales. The fourth part reviews the numerical and experimental studies done at the wall scale. The fifth part describes straw bale construction methods considering the regulation, structure requirements, and life cycle assessment data. Last, a critical analysis of the currently available data on straw as a building material is carried out and pending research issues are discussed. It was found that, despite abundant literature on structural and thermal properties of straw bale constructions, there is still a lack of some information. At a fiber scale, more research should be done to compare straw fibers to other natural and synthetic fibers. At a bale scale, further pH-related research is needed because it affects the material's interior conditions and durability. In addition, a thermal conductivity model for straw should be developed. On a bigger scale, the hygrothermal characteristics of various types of walls must be measured and computed experimentally and theoretically under various exterior and internal situations. More research is needed to improve the sound resistance of the straw wall by adding new layers capable of absorbing acoustic waves. Studies on the energy behavior, cost analysis, and how interior air moisture is self-regulated in straw buildings are needed at the building size. Therefore, a lack of consistent data among the different studies was noted depending on the straw characteristics.

Abstract

International audience; OBJECTIVE: Terminal 6q deletion is a rare genetic condition associated with a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by intellectual disability and structural brain anomalies. Interestingly, a similar phenotype is observed in patients harboring pathogenic variants in the DLL1 gene. Our study aimed to further characterize the prenatal phenotype of this syndrome as well as to attempt to establish phenotype-genotype correlations. METHOD: We collected ultrasound findings from 22 fetuses diagnosed with a pure 6qter deletion. We reviewed the literature and compared our 22 cases with 14 fetuses previously reported as well as with patients with heterozygous DLL1 pathogenic variants. RESULTS: Brain structural alterations were observed in all fetuses. The most common findings (>70%) were cerebellar hypoplasia, ventriculomegaly, and corpus callosum abnormalities. Gyration abnormalities were observed in 46% of cases. Occasional findings included cerebral heterotopia, aqueductal stenosis, vertebral malformations, dysmorphic features, and kidney abnormalities. CONCLUSION: This is the first series of fetuses diagnosed with pure terminal 6q deletion. Based on our findings, we emphasize the prenatal sonographic anomalies, which may suggest the syndrome. Furthermore, this study highlights the importance of chromosomal microarray analysis to search for submicroscopic deletions of the 6q27 region involving the DLL1 gene in fetuses with these malformations.

Abstract

Optical activity, also called circular birefringence, is known for two hundred years, but its applications for topological photonics remain unexplored. Unlike the Faraday effect, the optical activity provokes rotation of the linear polarization of light without magnetic effects, thus preserving the time-reversal symmetry. In this work, we report a direct measurement of the Berry curvature and quantum metric of the photonic modes of a planar cavity, containing a birefringent organic microcrystal (perylene) and exhibiting emergent optical activity. This experiment, performed at room temperature and at visible wavelength, establishes the potential of organic materials for implementing non-magnetic and low-cost topological photonic devices., Most work in topological photonics is performed in periodically structured systems. Here, the authors directly measure the nontrivial Berry curvature of the photonic modes of a birefringent continuous organic system exhibiting emergent optical activity.

Abstract

International audience; Living wood in the tree performs a muscular action by generating forces at the sapwood periphery and residual strains in dead sapwood fibres. Dissymmetric force generation around the tree trunk is the motor system allowing movement, posture control and tree reshaping after accidents. Rather young trees are able to restore the verticality of their trunk after accidental rotation of the soil-root system due to wind or landslide, leading to typically curved stems shape. The very high dissymmetry of forces for the motor action is associated with the occurrence of reaction wood on one side of the inclined stem during many successive years. A method to reconstitute this biomechanical history from observations after tree felling, on either green or dry wood, is discussed. A selection of 17 trees from 15 different species (13 different families), tropical and temperate, hardwoods and softwoods, were selected and peripheral residual strains were measured in situ before felling, on 8 positions for each stem. Matched wooden rods were sawn and measured for their mechanical and physical properties in the green and dry states, allowing the estimation of tree growth stress, i.e., the force created by the living wood. It was possible to build easy-to-use conversion coefficients between the growth stress indicator (GSI), measured in situ by the single hole method, and growth strain and growth stress with the knowledge of basic density and green longitudinal elastic modulus. Maturation strain, specific modulus (as a proxy of micro-fibril angle) and longitudinal shrinkage are properties independent from basic density, whose variation among species was very large. For the whole range of compression wood, normal wood and tension wood, strong relationships between these 3 properties were observed, but together no single model, based on cell-wall microfibril angle only, could be defined. Growth forces are the product of 4 parameters: ring width, basic density, basic specific modulus and maturation strain, all of them being the result of wood formation. Thanks to the wide range of wood types and species, simple and highly significant formulas were obtained for the relationship between basic and dry density, green and dry longitudinal modulus of elasticity, basic and dry specific modulus. To estimate ring width in the green state from values in dry state, radial shrinkage needs to be measured afterwards on dry specimens. Maturation strains is less accurately linked to late measurements on dry wood, but longitudinal shrinkage offers a rather good solution for an estimation provided that the wood type (softwood, hardwood with-G layer, hardwood without G-Layer) is known.

Abstract

Phase change materials (PCM) are promising technology to store thermal energy at a constant temperature. A large amount of energy can be stored or released in latent heat form during the transition of material from one phase to another. Despite the great benefits, most PCMs have their own limitations i.e., low phase change enthalpy, poor specific heat and thermal conductivity, supercooling, volume change, phase segregation, etc. Consequently, efficient thermal energy storage requires improving the thermophysical properties of PCMs. The present study is a comprehensive review of existing techniques for PCMs thermophysical properties enhancement. The research progresses on adding zero, one, two, and three-dimensionally structured additives to PCM is assessed to improve the thermal transport by enhancing the PCM effective thermal conductivity. The enhancement of latent heat of fusion and specific heat using various additives is also discussed. Further, the latest techniques on supercooling and phase segregation reduction are also presented. Last, the modelling of the novel composite materials formed by combining a PCM with other materials is presented. Despite the fact that the majority of these methods are still in the research and development stage, some of them have the potential to be commercialized in the near future. Reliable and efficient PCMs are exceptionally useful for storing solar energy and industrial waste heat, especially for constant temperature applications.

Abstract

International audience; The demonstration of enhanced spatial control of nanosecond microwave plasmas generated by the time reversal plasma source is presented in this paper. This new microwave plasma source relies on the spatio-temporal control of the electric field inside an all-metal plasma reactor by modifying the waveform of a high power microwave signal. More specifically, it originally used the spatio-temporal focusing capabilities of the time reversal method to focus a high electric field in a small location. However, a parasitic microwave breakdown can still occur at sharp corners or wedges inside the cavity due to the local enhancement of the residual electric field during time reversal focusing. Thus, it is proposed to use the linear combination of configuration field method to improve field control inside the reactor. Its transient electric field shaping capabilities turn out to be a good candidate for the development of a low pressure microwave "plasma brush".

Abstract

International audience; The synthesis of biomimetic helical secondary structures is sought after for the construction of innovative nanomaterials and applications in medicinal chemistry such as the development of protein-protein interaction modulators. Peptoids, a sequence-defined family of oligomers, enable a peptidomimetic strategy, especially considering the easily accessible monomer diversity and peptoid helical folding propensity. However, cis-trans isomerization of the backbone tertiary amides may impair the peptoid's adoption of stable secondary structures, notably the all-cis polyproline I-like helical conformation. Here, we show that cis-inducing NtBu achiral monomers strategically positioned within chiral sequences may reinforce the degree of peptoid helicity, although with a reduced content of chiral side chains. The design principles presented here will undoubtedly help achieve more conformationally stable helical peptoids with desired functions.

Abstract

Research question Does fresh embryo transfer after IVF with or without intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) increase the small for gestational age (SGA) rate, and frozen embryo transfer (FET) after IVF with or without ICSI increase the large for gestational age (LGA) rate versus natural conception? Design Retrospective comparison of an exposed historical group/cohort involving singletons conceived after fresh embryo transfer and after FET with an unexposed group/cohort involving singletons conceived after a natural conception. Results A total of 1961 fresh embryo transfer babies and 366 FET babies were compared with 6981 natural conception babies. The SGA rate in fresh embryo transfer babies was not significantly different to natural conception babies (6.9% versus 6.8%, P = 0.856). This outcome was not influenced by the fresh embryo transfer (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 1.0; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.8–1.3), but rather by a low rate of multiparity (aOR 0.5; 95% CI 0.3–0.7), advanced maternal age (aOR 1.1; 95% CI 1.0–1.2), maternal underweight (aOR 1.5; 95% CI 1.1–2.1), maternal smoking or cessation during pregnancy (aOR 1.8; 95% CI 1.4–2.3), pre-existing hypertension (aOR 2.3; 95% CI 1.3–4.1) and pregnancy-induced hypertension (aOR 2.5; 95% CI 1.7–3.7). The LGA rate in FET babies was significantly different from natural conception babies (6.6% versus 3.2%, P = 0.012). This outcome was influenced by the transfer of frozen embryos (aOR 2.2; 95% CI 1.3–3.8) and by a high maternal weight (aOR 1.9; 95% CI 1.1–3.6). Conclusions Maternal background and obstetric parameters are more likely to influence the SGA rate than fresh embryo transfer conception. FET conception could be associated with an increase in LGA rate.

Abstract

International audience; Domain-specific acceleration is now a "must" for all the computing spectrum, going from high performance computing to embedded systems. Unfortunately, system specialization is by nature a nightmare from the design productivity perspective. Nevertheless, in contexts where kernels to be accelerated are intrinsically streaming oriented, the combination of dataflow models of computation with Coarse-Grained Reconfigurable (CGR) architectures can be particularly handful. In this paper we introduce a novel methodology to assemble and characterize virtually reconfigurable accelerators based on dataflow and functional programming principles, capable of addressing design productivity issues for CGR accelerators. The main advantage of the proposed methodology is accurate IP-level latency predictability improving Design Space Exploration (DSE) when compared to state-of-the-art High-Level Synthesis (HLS).

Aussi nous avons mené une large étude afin de mesurer les facteurs qui avaient une influence sur la survie : (1) le type d’allogreffe et de cupule, (2) les facteurs techniques ou liés au patient.HypothèseLa reconstruction des PSO pouvait être effectuée indifféremment par des allogreffes morcelées cryoconservées ou traitées.Matériel et méthodesCette étude sur les PSO acétabulaires rétrospective et multicentrique incluait 508 dossiers de reconstruction ont pu être exploités au recul minimal de 5 ans. Le recul des greffes cryoconservées était plus faible (7,86 ans ± 1,89 [5–12,32]) que celui des traitées (8,22 ans ± 1,77 [5,05–15,48]) (p = 0,029). Mais les patients étaient plus jeunes au moment de leur première intervention pour les greffes cryoconservées (51,5 ans ± 14,2 [17–80]) contre traitées (57,5 ans ± 13,0 [12–94]) (p < 0,001), de même pour l’âge lors de la reprise acétabulaire (67,8 ans ± 12,2 [36,9–89,3] versus 70 ans ± 11,7 [25–94,5]) (p = 0,041).RésultatsIl y a eu globalement plus de complication dans le groupe cryoconservé (46/242 = 19,0 %) par rapport au groupe traité (35/256 = 13,2 %) (p = 0,044) avec plus de descellement dans le groupe cryoconservé (20/242 [8,2 %]) que dans le groupe os traité (6/266 [3,3 %]) (p = 0,001). En revanche, le nombre de luxation (16/242 = 6,6 % vs 17/266 = 6,4 %) (p = 0,844) ou d’infection (18/242 = 7,4 % vs 15/266 = 5,7 %) (p = 0,264), n’étaient pas différents. L’analyse en sous-groupe révélait qu’il y avait une corrélation entre la survenue de complication et la valeur croissante de l’IMC (p = 0,037) avec un risque global de complication supérieur chez les patients ayant un IMC supérieur à 30 ou inférieur à 20 (p = 0,006) avec un risque relatif de 1,95 (IC95 % : 1,26–2,93). Le surpoids était associé à un risque plus élevé de luxation avec un risque relatif de 2,46 (IC95 % : 1,23–4,70) (p = 0,007). Les descellements étaient plus fréquents chez les patients plus jeunes lors de l’intervention avec un risque relatif de 2,77 (IC95 % : 1,52–6,51) (p = 0,040) avant 60 ans lors de la reprise. Enfin les patients faiblement actifs selon Devane en préopératoire avaient un risque majoré de luxation avec un risque relatif de 2,51 (IC95 % : 1,26–8,26) (p = 0,022).DiscussionNotre hypothèse n’est pas confirmée par cette étude. Nos groupes n’étaient pas comparables initialement et ceci peut expliquer les différences retrouvées car le nombre plus important de descellement dans le groupe cryoconservé peut s’expliquer par l’hétérogénéité des groupes. Les allogreffes morcelées paraissent néanmoins adaptées à la reconstruction des PSO acétabulaires. La comparaison des formes cryoconservées ou traitées nécessite une étude randomisée pour déterminer laquelle est supérieure.

Abstract

Background: An accurate estimation of the risk of life-threatening (LT) ventricular tachyarrhythmia (VTA) in patients with LMNA mutations is crucial to select candidates for implantable cardioverter-defibrillator implantation. Methods: We included 839 adult patients with LMNA mutations, including 660 from a French nationwide registry in the development sample, and 179 from other countries, referred to 5 tertiary centers for cardiomyopathies, in the validation sample. LTVTA was defined as (1) sudden cardiac death or (2) implantable cardioverter defibrillator–treated or hemodynamically unstable VTA. The prognostic model was derived using the Fine-Gray regression model. The net reclassification was compared with current clinical practice guidelines. The results are presented as means (SD) or medians [interquartile range]. Results: We included 444 patients, 40.6 (14.1) years of age, in the derivation sample and 145 patients, 38.2 (15.0) years, in the validation sample, of whom 86 (19.3%) and 34 (23.4%) experienced LTVTA over 3.6 [1.0–7.2] and 5.1 [2.0–9.3] years of follow-up, respectively. Predictors of LTVTA in the derivation sample were: male sex, nonmissense LMNA mutation, first degree and higher atrioventricular block, nonsustained ventricular tachycardia, and left ventricular ejection fraction (https://lmna-risk-vta.fr). In the derivation sample, C-index (95% CI) of the model was 0.776 (0.711–0.842), and the calibration slope 0.827. In the external validation sample, the C-index was 0.800 (0.642–0.959), and the calibration slope was 1.082 (95% CI, 0.643–1.522). A 5-year estimated risk threshold ≥7% predicted 96.2% of LTVTA and net reclassified 28.8% of patients with LTVTA in comparison with the guidelines-based approach. Conclusions: In comparison with the current standard of care, this risk prediction model for LTVTA in laminopathies significantly facilitated the choice of candidates for implantable cardioverter defibrillators. Abstract

We consider a problem of Discrete Tomography which consists of reconstructing a finite lattice set S ⊂ Z 2 from given horizontal and vertical X-rays (i.e. with prescribed numbers of points in each row and column). Without additional requirements, the problem can be solved in polynomial time. Many variants require the solution to be in a chosen class A . For instance, the problem is NP-complete for the class A = H ∩ V of HV -convex lattice sets and it is polynomial for the class A = H ∩ V ∩ P of HV -convex polyominoes. Twenty years after these results, the problem's complexity remains unknown for A = C , the class of C -convex lattice sets (i.e. two-dimensional lattice polytopes). The main difficulty to solve this problem comes from combinatorial structures called switching components. Switching components are closed path with horizontal and vertical edges such that the solutions S are composed of either the elements of even or of odd indices. This binary choice can be encoded by a Boolean variable associated with the switching component and the convexity constraints are simply encoded by SAT clauses (2-clauses for HV -convexity and 3-clauses for C -convexity). The purpose of the paper is to investigate the properties of the switching components and the consequences of the convexity requirements. We divide the switching components in two classes: regular if their turning angle is constant, irregular otherwise. We prove that adjacent regular switching components have the same Boolean values. This property allows us to merge them into extended switching components. We prove that if all switching components are regular, then the extended switching components are all independent (then the number of solutions with the considered feet is 2 n , where n is the number of extended switching components). Finally, we prove that they are geometrically ordered.

Abstract

A single perioperative dose of glucocorticoid or gabapentinoid, or a combination of the 2, may improve postoperative analgesia, but data are still insufficient to be conclusive. In this single-center, randomized, double-blind, and double-dummy trial, we aimed to test whether the analgesic effect of adding preoperative pregabalin, at a dose unlikely to induce side effects, to preoperative dexamethasone improves early mobilization after spinal surgery.A total of 160 patients undergoing scheduled lumbar disk surgery (145 analyzed) comprised the study cohort. The patients received either 0.2 mg/kg intravenous dexamethasone before incision, or 150 mg oral pregabalin 1 hour before surgery, or a combination of the 2, or none of the above (control). Analgesia was supplemented by acetaminophen and ketoprofen, plus oxycodone ad libitum. The primary outcome was pain intensity during the first attempt to sit up, assessed the morning of the first postoperative day on an 11-point Numerical Rating Scale. Pain at rest and when standing up, opioid consumption, and tolerance were also assessed.None of the treatments tested differed from the control group in terms of efficacy or tolerance, even 6 months after surgery. The overall quality of analgesia was good, with only 10% and 30% of pain scores exceeding 3/10 for pain at rest and during movement, respectively.In this surgical model with the given anesthetic and analgesic environment, there was no advantage gained by adding low-dose pregabalin or dexamethasone. The multimodal analgesic protocol applied to all patients may have reduced the size of the effect.

Abstract

Future 5G and Internet of Things (IoT) applications will heavily rely on long-range communication technologies such as low-power wide area networks. In particular, LoRaWAN built on LoRa physical layer is gathering increasing interest, both from academia and industries, for enabling low-cost energy efficient IoT wireless sensor networks for, e.g., environmental monitoring over wide areas. While its communication range may go up to 20 km, the achievable bit rates in LoRaWAN are limited to a few kilobits per second. In the event of collisions, the perceived rate is further reduced due to packet loss and retransmissions. First, to alleviate the harmful impacts of collisions, we propose a decoding algorithm that enables to resolve several superposed LoRa signals. Our proposed method exploits the slight desynchronization of superposed signals and specific features of LoRa physical layer. Secondly, we design a full MAC protocol enabling collision resolution. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms conventional LoRaWAN jointly in terms of system throughput, energy efficiency as well as delay. These results show that our scheme is well suited for 5G and IoT systems, as one of their major goals is to provide the best trade-off among these performance objectives.

Abstract

Minimizing the communication time due to the transfer over a network of the intermediary results produced during the execution of a distributed query is a fundamental problem in distributed database management systems. We take a new look at this problem by investigating the relationship between the communication time and a remote data access middleware. We focus on two middleware parameters that are manually tuned by database administrators or programmers: the fetch size (i.e., the number of tuples that are communicated at once) and the message size (i.e., the size of the buffer at the middleware level). We present an experimental study which shows that these parameters have a crucial impact on the communication time. Then, we propose the MIND framework, which tunes the aforementioned middleware parameters, while adapting to different queries (that may vary in terms of selectivity) and networks (that may vary in terms of bandwidth). The main technical contributions of MIND are (i) a communication time estimation function that takes into account the middleware parameters, the size of the query result and the network environment, and (ii) an iterative optimization algorithm to find the fetch size and the message size that allow a good trade-off between low resource consumption and low communication time. We conclude with an experimental study that emphasizes the effectiveness of the MIND framework.

Abstract

Background The best methods of labour induction have still been controversial because of an increased risk of uterine rupture, especially in exposed women of labour induction with prostaglandins. We here attempted to determine, after Dinoprostone Vaginal Insert, previous cesarean women (exposed women), compared with nulliparous women (non-exposed women), are more likely 1) to have the dilated cervix (up to 3 cm or more), and 2) to require cesarean after cervix being dilated 3 cm or more. Methods This retrospective observational study included 43 exposed women and 188 non exposed women . A propensity score was calculated to balance the background differences including age, BMI, Bishop. Main findings Exposed women were significantly less likely to reach 3 cm of cervix dilation than non exposed women (62.8 and 67.6% [study] vs. 83 and 81.3% [control] before and after propensy score analysis, respectively (p0.05)). However exposed women were significantly less likely to require cesarean than non exposed women (4.9 vs. 17.2% p = 0.03) after inverse probability of treatment weighting once 3 cm dilation was reached. Conclusion After Dinoprostone Vaginal Insert, women with scarred uterus were less likely to reach 3 cm of cervix dilation but once 3 cm of dilation was achieved, they were less likely to require cesarean.

Abstract

Alhagi maurorum Medik. (Fabaceae) is a spontaneous shrub native to the region extending from Russia to the Mediterranean and used by rural and Saharan Algerian people for its medicinal effects. This study aims to document the medicinal uses of A. maurorum in Illizi (southern Algeria). Ethnobotanical survey was carried out in Illizi between June and September 2018 through face-to-face interviews with 73 residents and traditional practitioners, using prepared questionnaire and specimen indexed of the plant. The data collected were analyzed using χ2 test of independence to study the association between categorical variables. Findings revealed four local names for this plant, the main one being Atjer (57.98%), and the preferential use of leaves (59.42%) and seeds (37.58%). It is consumed mainly by illiterate people (82.60%) over 55 years of age (56.52%) and to treat various ailments such as fever (28.99%) and gastrointestinal disorders (26.08%). The majority of remedies are prepared in the form of a macerate (43.47%). Recorded ethnomedicinal properties of the plant should be subjects of further pharmacological studies to validate their popular use.

Abstract

Depletion of fossil reserves and environmental concerns arising from their use has led to the development of renewable energy technologies. Concentrated solar power (CSP) is one of the promising alternative energy solutions that can be built in higher capacity (hundreds of megawatts) and provide higher thermal efficiencies compared to other technologies. However, almost all CSP systems require thermal energy storage (TES) to improve the capacity factor and bridge the gap between supply and demand. In the current work, a reduced-order one-dimensional mathematical model of a phase change material (PCM) based TES is proposed and experimentally validated on different sets of data including different PCM, operating ranges and storage size per geometrical unit of the CSP. The model considers single EPCM as a lumped thermal mass without much compromise on the accuracy having less than 9% overall error in terms of predicting energy storage capacity when compared to experimental data. Additionally, an experimental setup for encapsulated-PCM (EPCM) is developed using NaNO3-KNO3 as the PCM. This system has a storage capacity of 9.7 MJ and a storage time of 6 hours is required to completely charge the system at selected conditions. An analysis of the system performance is presented under different experimental conditions. The model development, experimental analysis and validation shall provide reliable design estimates while designing EPCM-TES for large-scale applications. Therefore, the current simplified mathematical model best fits such applications where a design engineer needs to make quick decisions regarding the selection of an EPCM-TES system or where a reduced-order model of entire CSP plant is required.

Abstract

The geometry of Hamiltonian's eigenstates is encoded in the quantum geometric tensor (QGT). It contains both the Berry curvature, central to the description of topological matter and the quantum metric. So far the full QGT has been measured only in Hermitian systems, where the role of the quantum metric is mostly shown to determine corrections to physical effects. On the contrary, in non-Hermitian systems, and in particular near exceptional points, the quantum metric is expected to diverge and to often play a dominant role, for example on the enhanced sensing and on wave packet dynamics. In this work, we report the first experimental measurement of the quantum metric in a non-Hermitian system. The specific platform under study is an organic microcavity with exciton-polariton eigenstates, which demonstrate exceptional points. We measure the quantum metric's divergence and we determine the scaling exponent $n=-1.01\pm0.08$, which is in agreement with theoretical predictions for the second-order exceptional points.

Abstract

International audience; Objectives To model and analyse conceptions of determinants of health and cancer that are expressed and perceived by school children aged 6–11 based on a multiphase qualitative protocol. Methodology This is a multicentric, qualitative study of human and social sciences conducted among school children aged 6–11 years old. Two different tools were used, e.Photoexpression and Photonarration, in four French schools. This innovative and exploratory method addresses global health during the first phase (e.Photoexpression) and the theme of cancer during the second phase (Photonarration). The children express themselves through photography and narration. Results 1498 qualitative productions were made by 381 children aged 6–11 years old. The analysis of these productions of expression and narration through images allowed modelling of determinants of health and cancer as perceived by children through 7 fields and 28 categories. The conceptions of determinants of health and child cancer refer to rationalities that are centred on individual determinants (76%), minimise environmental determinants (20%) and conceal the parameters of access to healthcare and social services (3%). Discussion These findings provide new data to the international literature on children’s perceptions of determinants of health and cancer. These research findings, which can be applied to interventions and current practices, will enable prevention workers to act more effectively, closer to children’s perceptions and needs.

Abstract

Enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulose-containing raw materials, using Aspergillus niger, were studied. Filter paper, secondary cellulose-containing or starch-containing raw materials, miscanthus cellulose after alkaline or acid pretreatment, and wood chip cellulose, were used as substrates. The study focused on a wild A. niger strain, treated, or not (control), by ultraviolet (UV) irradiations for 45, 60, or 120 min (UV45, UV60, or UV120), or by UV irradiation for 120 min followed by a chemical treatment with NaN3 + ItBr for 30 min or 80 min (UV120 + CH30 or UV120 + CH80). A mixture of all the A. niger strains (MIX) was also tested. A citrate buffer, at 50 mM, wasthe most suitable for enzymatic hydrolysis. As the UV exposure time increased to 2 h, the cellulase activity of the surviving culturewas increased (r = 0.706, p &lt, 0.05). The enzymatic activities of the obtained strains, towards miscanthus cellulose, wood chips, and filter paper, were inferior to those obtained with commercial enzymes (8.6 versus 9.1 IU), in some cases. Under stationary hydrolysis at 37 °C, pH = 4.7, the enzymatic activity of A. niger UV120 + CH30 was 24.9 IU. The enzymatic hydrolysis of secondary raw materials, using treated A. niger strains, was themost effective at 37 °C. Similarly, the most effective treatment of miscanthus cellulose and wood chips occurred at 50 °C. The maximum conversion of cellulose to glucose was observed using miscanthus cellulose (with alkaline pretreatment), and the minimum conversion was observed when using wood chips. The greatest value of cellulase activity was evidenced in the starch-containing raw materials, indicating that A. niger can ferment not only through cellulase activity, but also via an amylolytic one.

Abstract

We study the formation of topological defects (quantum vortices) during the formation of a two-dimensional (2D) polariton condensate at the $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}$ point of a honeycomb lattice via the Kibble-Zurek mechanism. The lattice modifies the single-particle dispersion. The typical interaction energies at the quench time correspond to the linear part of the dispersion. The resulting scaling exponent for the density of topological defects is numerically found as $0.95\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.05$. This value differs from the one expected for 2D massive particles (1/2), but is indeed compatible with the one expected for a linear dispersion. We moreover demonstrate that the vortices can be pinned to the lattice, which prevents their recombination and could facilitate their observation and counting in continuous wave experiments.

Abstract

Microalgae are attracting considerable interest worldwide. In the present study, two native microalgae strains isolated from Tunisian cost were identified as Chlamydomonas sp. and Navicula sp. We characterized their pigment and protein contents, as well as their carbohydrate and lipid productivity. The predominant fatty acids were found to be α-linolenic acid (C18:3n-3) and palmitoleic acid (C16:1n-7) for Chlamydomonas sp. and Navicula sp. strains respectively. Microalgae methanol extracts showed important in vitro antibacterial activity against all tested gram negative bacteria. Antioxidant activities of methanol extracts were investigated by determining radical scavenging activity according to DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) and ABTS (2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)) methods. MTT (3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5 diphenyl tetrazolium bromide) assay showed that the newly isolated microalgae were not toxic and have potential application in the fish feeds domain as a supplement in fish meal. Also, the biosorption of cadmium from aqueous solutions by microalgae living cells was evaluated. Large removal capacities were obtained with values ranging from 89.8% to 99.38%. These results are very promising as a starting point for a potential application of these new isolates for in situ bioremediation of heavy metals contaminating aqueous systems.

Abstract

The application of thermal energy storage using thermochemical heat storage materials is a promising approach to enhance solar energy utilization in the built environment. Potassium carbonate ( K 2 C O 3 ) is one of the potential candidate materials to efficiently store thermal energy due to its high heat storage capacity and cost-effectiveness. In the present study, a 3-dimensional numerical model is developed for the exothermic hydration reaction of K 2 C O 3 . The heat produced from the reaction is transferred indirectly from the thermochemical material (TCM) bed through the walls of the honeycomb heat exchanger to a Heat Transfer Fluid (HTF). A parametric study is conducted for varying geometrical parameters of the honeycomb heat exchanger. The obtained results indicate that the reaction rate and heat transport in the TCM bed strongly depends on the geometrical parameters of the heat exchanger. Reducing the cell size of the honeycomb heat exchanger up to a certain level provides better thermal transport as well as improved reaction rate of the TCM bed. The results of this study provide detailed insight into the heat release processes occurring in a fixed bed of K 2 C O 3 . The study is useful for designing and optimizing thermo-chemical energy storage modules for the built environment.

Abstract

International audience; The recent performance of facial landmark detection has been significantly improved by using deep Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), especially the Heatmap Regression Models (HRMs). Although their performance on common benchmark datasets has reached a high level, the robustness of these models still remains a challenging problem in the practical use under noisy conditions of realistic environments. Contrary to most existing work focusing on the design of new models, we argue that improving the robustness requires rethinking many other aspects, including the use of datasets, the format of landmark annotation, the evaluation metric as well as the training and detection algorithm itself. In this paper, we propose a novel method for robust facial landmark detection, using a loss function based on the 2D Wasserstein distance combined with a new landmark coordinate sampling relying on the barycenter of the individual probability distributions. Our method can be plugged-and-play on most state-of-the-art HRMs with neither additional complexity nor structural modifications of the models. Further, with the large performance increase, wefound that current evaluation metrics can no longer fully reflect the robustness of these models. Therefore, we propose several improvements to the standard evaluation protocol. Extensive experimental results on both traditional evaluation metrics and our evaluation metrics demonstrate that our approach significantly improves the robustness of state-of-the-art facial landmark detection models.

Abstract

We demonstrate the formation of a high angular momentum turbulent state in an exciton-polariton quantum fluid with TE-TM Spin-Orbit Coupling (SOC). The transfer of particles from quasi-resonantly cw pumped \spl component to \sm component is accompanied with the generation of a turbulent gas of quantum vortices by inhomogeneities. We show that this system is unstable with respect to the formation of bogolons at a finite wave vector, controlled by the laser detuning. In a finite-size cavity, the domains with this wave vector form a ring-like structure along the border of a cavity, with a gas of mostly same-sign vortices in the center. The total angular momentum is imposed by the sign of TE-TM SOC, the wave vector of instability, and the cavity size. This effect can be detected experimentally via local dispersion measurements or by interference. The proposed configuration thus allows simultaneous experimental studies of quantum turbulence and high-angular momentum states in continuously-pumped exciton-polariton condensates., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

International audience; We have investigated charge and spin transport in n-type metallic GaAs nanowires (≈ 10 17 cm −3 doping level), grown by hydride vapor phase epitaxy (HVPE) on Si substrates. For this doping level, charge and spin transport might appear difficult because of the expected localization of minority holes in the valence band potential fluctuations generated by statistical fluctuations of the donor concentration. In contrast with these expectations, it is found, using spatially-and spectrally-resolved investigation of the luminescence intensity and circular polarization under laser excitation, that i) establishment of a charge thermodynamic equilibrium between the photoelectrons and the Fermi sea occurs over a distance from the excitation spot of 2 µm. At this distance, the spin polarization is still observed, implying that photoelectrons have preserved their spin orientation and that the two spin reservoirs remain distinct. ii) Charge can be transported over record distances larger than 20 µm at 6K. iii) Spatially-resolved investigations show that a photoelectron spin polarization of 20% can even be transported over a record distance of more than 20 µm. This long distance transport occurs because of the presence of large internal electric fields of ambipolar origin, further enhanced by the spatial redistribution of the Fermi sea. These findings has potential applications for long distance spin transport in n-type doped nanowires.

Abstract

Argan pulp is an abundant byproduct from the argan oil process. It was investigated to study the feasibility of second-generation bioethanol production using, for the first time, enzymatic hydrolysis pretreatment. Argan pulp was subjected to an industrial grinding process before enzymatic hydrolysis using Viscozyme L and Celluclast 1.5 L, followed by fermentation of the resulting sugar solution by Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The argan pulp, as a biomass rich on carbohydrates, presented high saccharification yields (up to 91% and 88%) and an optimal ethanol bioconversion of 44.82% and 47.16% using 30 FBGU/g and 30 U/g of Viscozyme L and Celluclast 1.5 L, respectively, at 10%w/v of argan biomass.
