This paper introduces a new retaining structure, multi-step cantilever retaining walls pulled locally with geogrids, which has advantages of light weight, quick installation and good applicability for high fill earthworks. Considering log-spiral rotation failure mechanism passing by the heel of the lowest wall members as well as pull-out failure and tensile rupture of the flexible reinforcements, an analytical procedure for seismic overall stability of the retained embankment is proposed based on the upper-bound limit analysis method combined with pseudo static approach. Analysis results of a practical example show that the proposed safety factor and critical slip surface are identical with those by numerical simulation method via FLAC3D. The safety factor increases approximately linearly with the ultimate tension force and the number of reinforcements and nonlinearly with the length of reinforcements within a certain range. Horizontal seismic force has noticeable effect on the slope stability, and vertical seismic effect becomes significant under high horizontal acceleration coefficient. The safety factor is decreasing and the critical slip surface develops obviously towards the embankment exterior as the total number of vertical wall members increases. This study presents a long-term reactivation monitoring approach using multi-source satellite SAR and optical data. It also explores the relationship between landslide deformations and hydrological factors for reactivation assessment and management. More specifically, this approach is applied to investigate the long-term reactivation evolution of the Huangtupo landslide under the local engineering work conducted in four different phases. The spatial–temporal evolutions of the Huangtupo landslide were mapped by the multi-temporal optical images from the PlanetScope satellite, revealing that the building areas were gradually replaced by the vegetation covers. The long-term reactivated deformations were explored by the multi-source satellite SAR data from ALOS-2 and Sentinel-1A/B based on time-series InSAR analysis. Cross-validation between the multi-source InSAR results showed that the ALOS-2 and Sentinel-1A/B measurements are highly correlated. Long-term spatial–temporal deformations were investigated using the Sentinel-1A/B Track 11 data between 2016 and 2022. A long stack of SAR datasets was divided into four consecutive branches based on the local engineering work plan. A general slowing down deformation trend can be observed from the time series analysis, indicating the effectiveness of local measures for maintaining the slope stability. Most importantly, seasonal fluctuations caused by changes in rainfall and Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) water level can be clearly observed from the time series evolutions of deformation during each phase. Through the gray correlation analysis and cross wavelet analysis, it is found that the lower part of the Huangtupo landslide shows a higher correlation with the TGR water level changes, while the upper slope mainly responds to rainfall. Importantly, it is found that the lowest common power was observed at P4 since August, 2020, suggesting that the upper part of the slope has been changed to be more rainfall erosion resistant due to the effort of the drainage system and vegetation restoration from the ecological restoration project. The assessment of landslide susceptibility often overlooks the influence of forests on shallow landslide mobility, despite its significance. This study delved into the impact of forest presence on shallow landslide mobility during intense rainfall in Mengdong, China. Field investigations were coupled with the analysis of pre- and post-rainfall remote sensing (RS) images to delineate landslides. The ratio of landslide height (H) to travel distance (L) from a digital elevation model (DEM) were used to calculate landslides mobility. Preceding the event, forest coverage was evaluated using the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) derived from multiband RS image. The research identified 1531 shallow landslides in the area, revealing a higher concentration of landslides on slopes with elevated NDVI. Results indicated that disparities in soil permeability and cohesion, generating pore water pressure (PWP), triggered clusters of shallow landslides. Shallow landslides exhibit a higher propensity on slopes with elevated NDVI. The dimensions (height and area) of these identified shallow landslides typically exhibit a positive correlation with NDVI, consequently resulting in longer travel distances for landslides occurring on higher NDVI slopes. The average H/L ratio of all identified landslides was about 0.63. H/L generally increases with NDVI and decreases with landslide area. However, due to river channel restrictions, the H/L increases with slope gradient. The findings suggest that the high permeability of areas with tree roots poses a risk to the shallow stability of slopes, yet trees contribute to mitigating landslide mobility. Natural hazards like landslides can have devastating consequences. The study of landslide causes and their vulnerability assessment will assist in implementing appropriate mitigation approaches so as to protect lives and property. Landslides are complex phenomena that primarily depend on the geometry of the slope inclination and the soil properties. Soil characteristics are mostly determined by the shear modulus of the subsurface layers, which is often approximated from the observed shear wave velocity (Vs). This paper is focused on assessing the vulnerability status of a site, especially through applications of the multichannel analysis of surface waves (MASW) approach. Improvements in Landslide hazard safety will be aided by the identification of unstable slopes; hence it is necessary to create the quick and affordable method for safety evaluation that is envisioned in this study. The study displays a graphical relationship between VH (average shear wave velocity) and Slope gradient (ϴ°) in order to detect the potentially unstable slopes. The proposed curve presented by inputting the Slope inclination and VH will be helpful in identifying and categorizing the slope into high, low and medium risk zones. This graphical relationship was practically validated based on the data gathered from eight stations spread throughout the various areas of Itanagar capital complex, Arunachal Pradesh, India. It was found that the relationship developed showed good prediction performance. The vulnerability of a landslide hazard can therefore be assessed using that vulnerability assessment curve by keeping an eye on monitoring the shear wave velocity and slope gradients. A novel finite-element (FE) procedure for analyzing slope stability was recently developed and encoded into a Fortran computer code S4DINA 2.0. This innovative approach involves a gradual increment in the principal stress deviator in a specific way until an unstable condition is reached. In the original version of S4DINA 2.0, the initial stress field was assessed using the gravity loading procedure (GLP), which has various limitations. This paper introduces the fictitious excavation method (FEP) as an alternative procedure for estimating initial stresses. After incorporating the FEP into S4DINA 2.0, a parametric investigation was conducted to explore the effect of the coefficient of soil pressure at rest (K0) and Poisson's ratio (ν) on the GLP and FEP, which used three selected slope examples. The evolution of the factor of safety (FOS), as determined by the stress deviator increasing model (SDIM), was examined for ν for a variety of soil friction angles (ϕ′). The findings of this paper were documented in detail. The inclusion of K0 as an inherent soil property in the GLP was unfeasible due to the formulation nature of the GLP. In addition, when this method is used, the resulting FOS might significantly deviate from the accurate result in numerous instances. However, in scenarios where K0 exceeds one, the FEP remains the exclusive solution, and when K0 is less than one, selecting the FEP with an appropriate ϕ′ value is the best choice for achieving a rigorous FOS. The soil is usually unsaturated in practical engineering, and the slope failure surface generally presents three-dimensional (3D) characteristics. Therefore, the traditional plane problem calculation method does not accurately describe the slope's stability and safety assessment results strengthened through frame beam anchor plates (FBAPs). This work introduces a novel approach based on the limit analysis (LA) technique for assessing the 3D stability of unsaturated soil slopes supported by FBAPs to address this issue. The slope safety factor (Fs) expression was derived based on the energy balance principle. The soil slope stability the FBAP reinforces was quantitatively expressed as a function of slope parameters. Nonlinear distribution features of soil matrix suction and effective unit weight, as well as the internal energy dissipation rate created by the anchor plate, must be taken into account when calculating the internal energy dissipation and external work rate. The impact of the 3D effect, seismic parameters, unsaturated soil characteristics, and supporting structure on slope stability was discussed. Some design suggestions for slope reinforcement are put forward. According to the findings, the suction effect's beneficial effects on stability should be considered. Slopes with a width-to-height ratio (B/H) of less than 10 should consider the 3D effect's beneficial effects. The undrained shear strength of marine sediment is of vital importance because of its critical role in seafloor slope stability, seafloor infrastructure, and influencing sediment dynamics that can lead to underwater landslides. Therefore, understanding the undrained shear strength of marine sediments and its influencing factors is a fundamental requirement for both offshore engineering and geoscience studies. Core data obtained from 198 sites across 46 legs of the Ocean Drilling Program/International Ocean Discovery Program (ODP/IODP) were used to analyze the undrained shear strength of marine sediments and their influencing factors. The undrained shear strength of marine sediments is significantly influenced by the depositional environment. Sediments deposited in active continental margins exhibit a higher undrained shear strength than those deposited in deep-sea and carbonate platform environments due to seismic strengthening and over-consolidation. It was found that fine-grained siliciclastic lithofacies with less than 50% carbonate content exhibited high variability and a rapid increase in the undrained shear strength with depth. In contrast, fine-grained carbonate lithofacies with more than 50% carbonate, as well as reef-facies carbonates, showed low variability and only a gradual increase in undrained shear strength with depth. Additionally, we showed a positive association between the undrained shear strength and physical characteristics including bulk density and P-wave velocity, as well as an inverse correlation with porosity. An exponential relationship was found between these physical properties and the undrained shear strength, with coefficients of determination (R²) values of 0.71, 0.74, and 0.69, respectively. This study proposes a novel ensemble method based on weighted majority voting to evaluate the slope stability. The ensemble classifier is composed of 5 base classifiers, including random forest, logistic regression, naive bayes, support vector classifier and back propagation. An integrated approach was developed using 213 slope cases collected from the literature and the performance of the proposed approach was validated. The selection of training parameters was carried out by the definition of safety factor and the correlation analysis of parameters. The search for the optimal hyperparameters of the base classifiers is performed using a grid search algorithm combined with a five-fold cross-validation. Weights to each base classifier is obtained by the AUC (area under the curve) value of the training dataset. Finally, the ensemble method based on weights is established to predict the stability of slopes in this paper. It is demonstrated that the ensemble algorithm is superior to the base classifier with regard to accuracy, kappa, precision, recall, F1 score and the receiver's operating characteristic curve AUC. In this study, the investigation on the influence of Alstonia Angustiloba tree moisture absorption at various depths and separation on the development of persuaded moisture absorption in soil were performed. The slope stabilization analysis were conducted considering two conditions (dry and wet conditions) at two different slope (saturated and unsaturated slope). Besides, the tree moisture absorption data generated during the course of 8 months of on-site monitoring are recorded and applied to assess the safety factor of the slope. Slope stabilization analysis is then performed and represented in two-dimensional and three-dimensional contour model to investigate the effect of plant transpiration on the slope stabilization. According to the findings, at the slope crest with the existence of Alstonia Angustiloba tree, the tree moisture absorption recorded a maximum value, at a distance and depth of 1.1 and 0.25 m. Moreover, the findings also proved that larger tree moisture absorption enhanced the slope's safety factor by up to 53% (from 2.17 to 4.57). Rock and soil strength profoundly influences the stability of open-pit mine slopes. Traditional slope design, based on limited drilling data, often disregards inherent uncertainties. Effectively utilizing new sample information from mining operations poses a challenge, hindering dynamic and differentiated design for the entire perimeter slope. To address this, we propose a dynamic optimization method considering rock mass strength uncertainty for the entire perimeter slope. Our approach involves designing slope angles separately in different zones, while thoroughly considering decision-makers' preferences. Furthermore, we delegate the final adjustment authority of slope angles within the safety permissible range to on-site decision-makers. Compared to traditional methods, our dynamic design method incorporates rock mass strength uncertainty into slope evaluation while also accounting for decision-makers' safety and economic preferences. Through a case study of a specific open-pit mine, our proposed dynamic design method increases the overall slope angle by approximately 2.5°, fully accommodating the influence of on-site decision-making preferences on slope design. In this work, intelligent numerical models for the prediction of debris flow susceptibility using slope stability failure factor of safety (FOS) machine learning predictions have been developed. These machine learning techniques were trained using novel metaheuristic methods. The application of these training mechanisms was necessitated by the need to enhance the robustness and performance of the three main machine learning methods. It was necessary to develop intelligent models for the prediction of the FOS of debris flow down a slope with measured geometry due to the sophisticated equipment required for regular field studies on slopes prone to debris flow and the associated high project budgets and contingencies. With the development of smart models, the design and monitoring of the behavior of the slopes can be achieved at a reduced cost and time. Furthermore, multiple performance evaluation indices were utilized to ensure the model's accuracy was maintained. The adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system, combined with the particle swarm optimization algorithm, outperformed other techniques. Slope instability, driven by factors such as rainfall, seismic activity, and human influence, presents a pervasive hazard worldwide. Timely assessment of slope stability and accurate identification of its most critical slip surface are important for slope safety early warning and management. Currently, for the slope reliability analysis by the strength reduction method (SRM), the critical failure path is approximately determined through visualization techniques, which is not sufficiently precise. Therefore, this study proposes a critical failure search method based on SRM for slope reliability analysis, aiming to accurately identify the critical slip surface. The critical failure path is considered as the path with the maximum plastic dissipative energy density (PDED) and is searched in the constructed weighted graph based on the dissipated energy of the slope. This proposed method is further applied with an engineering slope to find the critical failure path and assess its reliability during and after construction. The searched critical failure path lies within the approximate range obtained through conventional visualization methods. Finally, a reliability prediction model consisting of time, rainfall, and deformation component is further constructed, which allows rapid estimation of the slope reliability through available monitor data. This study delves into the mechanical properties of steep and rocky slopes subjected to long-term freeze-thaw actions. Considering the unique climatic conditions in cold regions, especially the significant impact of seasonal and diurnal temperature variations on slope excavation, the research focuses on a high-cold region iron ore mine. Four types of rocks commonly found in the mining area are thoroughly examined, taking into account the hydrogeological conditions of the mining area. The study systematically analyzes the mechanisms of various factors such as weathering, freeze-thaw cycles, and ice-water phase changes on the stability of cold region fractured rock masses. The research reveals that under prolonged freeze-thaw actions, crack water within the rock continuously undergoes ice-water phase changes, generating substantial freeze expansion forces that result in structural damage to the rock mass. This damage is evident not only in the development of existing microcracks but also leads to the generation of new fractures, ultimately causing deterioration in the rock mass structure. The study of the evolution patterns of freeze-thaw forces contributes to a better understanding of slope stability issues in cold region mineral resource extraction, offering crucial insights for the design, construction, and operation of related engineering projects. Background: Loess is prone to large deformation and flow slide due to natural and artificial interfaces inside. The strength of these interfaces controls the mechanical properties of loess. Obtaining their mechanical parameters through in-situ testing is essential for evaluating the mechanical stability in loess engineering with interfaces. Methods: By developing a borehole micro static cone penetration system and creating various types of loess with interfaces, extensive borehole penetration model tests were conducted to observe changes in cone tip resistance during penetration. The response surface method was used to analyze the impact of various test conditions on the calculated resistance. A three-dimensional surface fitting method was employed to establish the relationship between penetration parameters and shear strength parameters, which was validated through in-situ testing. Results: The developed borehole micro static cone penetration system achieves overall miniaturization while providing significant penetration power and ensuring an effective penetration distance. Cone tip resistance development during penetration can be divided into three stages: initial, rapid increase, and slow increase. The transition times between these stages vary for different soils. Calculated resistance is positively correlated with dry density and normal stress and negatively correlated with water content. A quadratic positive correlation was established between calculated resistance and shear strength parameters during penetration. In composite soils, the interaction between water content and normal stress is strong. Compared to intact soil samples, the shear strength parameters of composite soils are more prominently influenced by water content. Conclusion: A system for testing interface mechanical parameters was innovatively developed, fulfilling the need to obtain interface shear strength parameters for deep soil. Most rock slope stability analysis methods are based on the Hoke–Brown criterion under a two‐dimensional state of stress, which somewhat ignores the effect of intermediate principal stress. In this paper, by introducing the improved three‐dimensional H‐B criterion into the Meridian plane, the tangent line of a point on the H‐B strength envelope is regarded as its instantaneous equivalent M‐C parameter. Based on this, a formula for solving the equivalent M‐C strength parameters under a three‐dimensional stress state is established to describe the shear strength parameters of rock mass, considering different stress states. Taking three kinds of rocks as examples, the influence of the intermediate principal stress on their strength parameters is analyzed. On this basis, the realization scheme of the nonlinear strength reduction method is established, the stability of the slope is studied, and an example verifies the feasibility of this method. This method fully considers the nonlinear characteristics of rock slope strength parameters under a three‐dimensional stress state and provides a solid basis for slope stability analysis. The analysis of slope failure modes is essential for understanding slope stability. This study investigated the failure modes and triggering factors of a rock slope using the limit equilibrium method, finite differences method, and exploratory factor analysis. First, the limit equilibrium method was used to identify potential sliding surfaces. Then, the finite differences method was employed to study deformation and failure features in a slope. Stability factors were calculated considering specific conditions such as rainfall, prestressing loss, and earthquakes using the strength reduction method. Finally, exploratory factor analysis was utilized to identify the triggering factors of each failure mode. The results revealed that failure modes were categorized into two types based on the positions of the sliding surface. The main triggering factors for Failure Mode 1 were rainfall and prestress loss, while for Failure Mode 2 they were earthquake loading and prestress loss. This study offers a comprehensive exploration of potential failure modes and their triggering factors from mechanical and statistical perspectives, enriching our understanding of potential failure modes in rock slopes. In high-cold regions, the instability of precarious rock masses in open-pit mines is often exacerbated by the effects of freeze-thaw cycles, posing a significant threat to the continuous production of open-pit mining operations. To address this issue effectively, we conducted an in-depth study on the precarious rock masses in the near-slope of a mining area in a high-cold region using a fracture mechanics-based stability analysis method. We analyzed the impact of freezethaw cycles on the engineering stability. Introducing a novel approach, we established the temperature field at different time points to determine whether the freeze-thaw depth influences the generation of freeze-thaw forces on the controlling structural surfaces. Employing the maximum circumferential stress criterion, we conducted a comprehensive analysis of tension cracks in the slope and derived corresponding safety factor expressions. Focusing on retrogressive rock slopes, we divided the slope's precarious rock masses into n potentially unstable approximate rectangular rock bodies. Based on this, we developed a fracture mechanics-based slope stability calculation method considering the combined effects of freeze-thaw forces, crack water pressure, and gravity. Through relevant numerical examples, we successfully calculated the safety factors of the segmented rock bodies, revealing the varying influence of freezethaw forces on rock mass stability. By integrating the calculation results with practical engineering considerations, we validated the feasibility of our proposed method. Lastly, aligning with pertinent precarious rock stability assessment criteria, we provided corresponding remediation measures based on the distinct stability conditions of the rock masses. Through comprehensive research and an effective computational approach, we offer a scientifically viable solution for the stability of precarious rock masses in open-pit mines in high-cold regions, thereby providing robust technical support for the sustainable production of mining enterprises. Rock slope failures pose significant challenges in geotechnical engineering due to the intricate nature of rock masses, discontinuities, and various destabilizing factors during and after excavation. In mining industries, such as national cement factories, multi-benched excavation systems are commonly used for quarrying. However, cut slopes are often designed with steep angles to maximize economic benefits, inadvertently neglecting critical slope stability issues. This oversight can lead to slope instability, endangering human lives and property. This study focuses on analyzing the stability of existing quarry cut slopes, estimating their final depth, and conducting a parametric study of geometric profiles including bench height, width, face angle, and rump width. Kinematic analysis helps identify potential failure modes. The results reveal that the existing quarry cut slope is prone to toppling, wedge failure, and planar failure with probabilities of 42.68%, 19.53%, and 14.23%, respectively. Numerical modeling using the finite element method (Phase2 8.0 software) was performed under both static and dynamic loading conditions. The shear reduction factor (SRF) of the existing quarry cut slope was 1.01 under static loading and 0.86 under dynamic loading. Similarly, for the estimated depth, the SRF was 0.82 under static loading and 0.7 under dynamic loading. These values indicate that the slope stability falls significantly below the minimum acceptable SRF, rendering it unstable. The parametric study highlights the face angle of the bench as the most influential parameter in slope stability. By adjusting the bench face angle from 90° to 75°, 70°, and 65°, the SRF increased by 31.6%, 35.4%, and 37.9%, respectively. Among these, a 70° bench face angle is recommended for optimal stability with a SRF of 1.27 under static loading and 1.18 under dynamic loading. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper coupled a water-air two-phase hydrodynamic (WATPH) model with the Iverson's method to analyze the influence of the Lisse effect on the fast groundwater pressure (Pw) response and the slope stability. Furthermore, the sensitivities of the driving force and loess soil parameters were investigated. Results showed that the WATPH model simulated the height and rise of the depth to the water table reasonably well. The depth to water table before rainfall (H0) had a significant impact on the Lisse effect and the slope stability. When the H0 was less than approximately 1 m, the rainfall triggered a significant Lisse effect and decreased the slope factor of safety (Fs). When the rainfall intensity (Ri) was higher than the saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ks), the Lisse effect and the Fs slightly changed with the increase of the Ri, and the slope tended to be unstable with continuous rainfall. With increasing Ks, the Lisse effect noticeably increased, and the minimum Fs quickly decreases. The analysis of the normalized sensitivity coefficient revealed that H0 had a dramatic impact on the Lisse effect and loess slope stability. Rapid urbanization has caused numerous construction solid waste landfills. Few studies have explored the impact of multi-source waste soils with remarkable spatial variability on the reliability of landfills. This study aims to characterize the site-specific spatial variability of stockpiled waste soils and perform a probabilistic stability assessment of a real-world landfill slope. An integrated probabilistic landfill analysis framework is developed, consisting of spatial variability characterization, random field modeling, and probabilistic slope stability analysis. Seventy-four groups of clayey waste soil parameters were obtained from a landfill in Hangzhou, China. The artificial mixing behavior makes the shear strengths of waste soils have high variability (coefficients of variation close to 0.5), a high positive cross-correlation (about 0.9), and bimodal marginal probability distributions. The spatial variabilities of the cohesion and friction angle of clayey waste soils are similar, with vertical and horizontal scales of fluctuation being 3.23 m and 34.32 m, respectively. The conditional random field modeling of clayey waste soils provides a more realistic slope stability assessment of the landfill and its impact on the failure probability highly relies on the strength and location of boreholes. Rainfall infiltration analysis has a great significance to the mitigation and risk assessment of rainfall-induced landslides. The original Green–Ampt (GA) model ignored the fact that a transitional layer exists in infiltration regions of soils under the rainfall permeation; moreover, it cannot effectively analyze the rainfall-infiltrated heterogeneous slope considering the spatial variability of saturated hydraulic conductivity (ks). In this study, an improved GA model is proposed for the rainfall-infiltration analysis of heterogeneous slopes. Four common slope cases are investigated to validate the effectiveness of the proposed model. An infinite slope model is taken as an illustrative example to investigate the distributions of volumetric water content and slope stability under the rainfall infiltration. The results show that the distributions of volumetric water content and factor of safety (Fs) obtained from the proposed model are in very good agreement with the numerical results of the Richards' equation. In contrast, the modified GA model obtains biased distributions of volumetric water content and smaller Fs for the same cases. The results show that the proposed GA model can accurately identify the location of critical slip surface of the slope, and as such it provides an efficient method for risk analysis and control of slopes susceptible to landslide. Tailings storage facilities (TSFs) have undergone an unacceptably high failure rate for decades, leading to an increased focus on improving the safety of these structures. One aspect that has not received sufficient attention is examining how reliably and consistently engineers analyse the stability of TSFs. An understanding of the current state of practice is needed as there are a range of analytical methods available to engineers, while the high failure rate of these structures strongly points to some deficiencies in practice. To examine some of these issues, a tailings-focussed slope stability comparative design exercise was organised to compare the methods and results used by tailings engineers to analyse the same slope within which the phreatic surface was to rise under a specified pattern. Twenty-eight practitioners participated in the exercise to predict at what phreatic surface level the slope would fail. A wide range of predictions were made, ranging from assuming the slope would liquefy and fail instantly (i.e. before any rise in phreatic surface) to a range of techniques based on (i) yield strength ratios, (ii) stress path methods, and (iii) numerical analyses, each predicting various failure levels, and finally some predictors who applied drained strengths, resulting in predictions that the slope would not fail. The Smoothed Particle Finite Element Method (SPFEM) has gained popularity as an effective numerical method for modelling geotechnical problems involving large deformations. To promote the research and application of SPFEM in geotechnical engineering, we present ESPFEM2D, an open-source two-dimensional SPFEM solver developed using MATLAB. ESPFEM2D discretizes the problem domain into computable particle clouds and generates the finite element mesh using Delaunay triangulation and the α -shape technique to resolve mesh distortion issues. Additionally, it incorporates a nodal integration technique based on strain smoothing, effectively eliminating defects associated with the state variable mapping after remeshing. Furthermore, the solver adopts a simple yet robust approach to prevent the rank-deficiency problem due to under-integration by using only nodes as integration points. The Drucker-Prager model is adopted to describe the soil's constitutive behavior as a demonstration. Implemented in MATLAB, this open-source solver ensures easy accessibility and readability for researchers interested in utilizing SPFEM. ESPFEM2D can be easily extended and effectively coupled with other existing codes, enabling its application to simulate a wide range of large geomechanical deformation problems. Through rigorous validation using four numerical examples, namely the oscillation of an elastic cantilever beam, non-cohesive soil collapse, cohesive soil collapse, and slope stability analysis, the accuracy, effectiveness and stability of this open-source solver have been thoroughly confirmed. Torrential rainfall is one of the significant factors contributing to shallow slope failures. This study discusses the effect of the different filter gabion sizes against slope instability due to torrential rainfall numerically. The experimental investigation of effects of different filter gabion sizes was extensively investigated. The investigations were carried out in a two-dimensional domain using the saturated–unsaturated consolidation analysis method with an elastoplastic model for unsaturated soils considering two suction effects. Four different sizes of filter gabion were used in this investigation. The results of numerical simulations of slope model tests showed that, as rainwater accumulated at the slope toe, the pore water pressures (PWPs) near the slope toe increased to be positive or larger than the surface soil’s air entry PWP. The phreatic surface that appeared on the slope surface as the positive PWPs increased with the elapsed time. In the simulations, large displacement, considered surface failure, started once the phreatic surface reached the slope surface. The simulated phreatic surface appearance time on the slope surface extended as the filter gabion size became larger. Nevertheless, the results showed that the applied analysis method is powerful and reliable for simulating slope failure behaviours and their proper countermeasures under torrential rainfall. Water-level fluctuation (WLF) caused by rainfall or reservoir operation has an impact on the long-term stability of reservoir bank soil slopes because it changes the equilibrium of surface and groundwater levels. Thus, determining the link between groundwater level and surface water level, as well as the association between WLF parameters and other parameters, is critical for slope stability control measures execution. This research identifies essential factors for anchored and non-anchored slope on reservoir bank under WLF using a variance-based global sensitivity analysis (SA) method while accounting for multiple parameters and scenarios. This investigation involves two types of soil slopes: sand and clay. It consists of more than 10 parameters divided into three categories: geological characteristics, WLF, and anchoring parameters. WLFs are the most sensitive contributors to slope stability in sand and clay slopes. Furthermore, the surface water level parameter is more sensitive than the groundwater level parameter, with total-order Sobol' indices of 0.48 and 0.28, respectively. After the anchors are installed on the slope, the sensitivity indices of slope inclination and angle of failure surface rose dramatically, increasing by 0.11 and 0.24, respectively. The findings of the first-order indices show that surface water level and groundwater level have opposing tendencies, which is a significant inducement to cause a soil landslide on the reservoir bank. This study investigates the sensitivity of sand and clay soil slope parameters to changes in water level, as well as the interaction mechanism between its primary control elements. Ecological slope protection plays a crucial role in increasing slope stability and preventing landslide disasters. The effectiveness of ecological slope protection is influenced by the ecological substrate used. In this study, the impact of materials and physical properties on the performance of ecological substrates based on red soil was investigated. Raw materials such as red soil, organic fertilizer, cement, sawdust, and ferrous sulfate were utilized for the ecological substrate, with Cynodon dactylon selected as the slope-protection plant. Orthogonal experiments L25(53) with three factors and five levels were conducted to analyze the growth status of Cynodon dactylon, shear strength, and degree of disintegration after dry–wet cycles. The study examined the interrelationships among multiple factors for ecological substrates using Pearson correlation and statistical significance tests. Range analysis was applied to determine the optimal formula. Furthermore, an ecological substrate neural network (ESNN) model based on a variational autoencoder (VAE) algorithm was initially designed to verify the optimal formula of ecological substrates and predict the performance of experiment arrays generated by VAE. The research findings indicated that the optimal formula obtained through ESNN model closely aligned with that obtained by range analysis. The excellent prediction performance of ESNN model was confirmed by the field experiments with random level values assigned to three factors. Therefore, the ESNN model can objectively evaluate orthogonal experiments' performance and provide property predictions for plant growth and slope stability for on-site construction conditions. In geotechnical analysis, the factor of safety (FOS) is crucial for slope stability assessment. Traditional methods often overlook the nuances of partial slope instability. Accurately determining geotechnical parameters for FOS in complex simulations is challenging and resource-intensive. The limit equilibrium method (LEM), considering unit weight, cohesion, and internal friction angle, is used to address this. This study focuses on the Jiuxianping landslide, analyzing its stability and failure behavior. Utilizing the Bayesian theorem, the study back-analyzes shear strength parameters, considering partial instability and uncertainties in the Janbu corrected method. The parameters' posterior distribution is determined using the Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method and Multivariate Adaptive Regression Splines (MARS) for efficient sampling. These parameters are then used for precise FOS calculation at the critical point of partial instability, corroborated by 2021 data from the Jiuxianping landslide. The study finds that while the entire slope remains stable, partial instability caused by long-term water erosion significantly lowers the FOS about 10.9%, highlighting its critical impact on overall slope stability. Results of torsional shear hollow cylinder (TSHC) tests carried out on a reconstituted sand maintaining a constant direction of major principal stress relative to the vertical axis (α) and intermediate principal stress ratio (b) during shearing are presented. Tests were undertaken following the constant shear drained (CSD) stress path, which simulates stress conditions under a rising phreatic surface. The test programme was complemented by undrained TSHC tests to provide further insight regarding the behaviour of the sand when sheared under a range of α values. Various reconstitution methods (i.e. moist tamped (MT), dry pluviated (DP) and wet pluviated (WP)) were included to examine the effects of fabric on CSD triggering. Only MT and DP specimens could be prepared loose enough to exhibit liquefaction behaviour; hence the focus of this study was on these preparation methods. The programme indicated that the instability stress ratio (ηIL) under the CSD stress paths decreases as α increases, suggesting that cross-anisotropy strongly influences the shearing behaviour of sands under this trigger mechanism. In addition, the DP sand showed a greater decrease of ηIL with increasing α compared to the MT sand, consistent with other studies examining the effect of fabric and preparation methods on inherent anisotropy. The results of this study suggest that ignoring the effect of cross-anisotropy on the CSD trigger mechanism will lead to unconservative slope stability assessments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A method directly using rainfall records to predict a slope's potential instability is devised. The method consists of three sequential steps: identifying the critical suction stress (pore water pressure when soil is saturated) profile of a given slope, developing a rainfall intensity–duration threshold curve for the slope, and using rainfall record to determine if the threshold is reached (failure occurs) or not (no failure). It innovatively uses a slope's strength parameters and slope angle to develop the critical suction stress (tensile) or compressive pore water pressure profile where, at each depth within the slope, the effective stress reaches the failure state. Hydromechanical numerical modeling is then conducted under various rainfall intensities to identify their corresponding duration for slope failure, thus, the rainfall intensity–duration threshold curve of the slope. Two previously well-documented and studied rainfall-induced slope instability cases; one near the town of Edmonds, Washington State, and the other near the village of Rüdlingen in northern Switzerland are used to validate the method. Excellent predictions of the slope failure depth and timing are demonstrated, indicating the effectiveness of the proposed method. Because the suction stress–based rainfall intensity–duration curve is characteristic of a given slope and it can be determined a priori, the method provides a practical way to conduct real-time rainfall monitoring and predict instability for a specific slope, and a pathway to forecast instability of natural slopes in a region. Soil nailing has become a common method for improving slope stability due to its cost-effectiveness and easy installation. However, concerns have been arisen regarding the quality and integrity of soil nailing works. This study proposed a novel method for soil nail integrity assessment using an actively heated fiber-optic (AHFO) sensor. First, numerical simulations were conducted to determine the thermal conductivity profiles of soil nails with various defects, measured using AHFO. By establishing the relationship between defects and thermal conductivity profiles, the material and severity of soil nail defects can be estimated. It was found that the thermal conductivity profiles obtained by the AHFO sensor accurately correspond to defect locations, and the entrained material and severity of defects in the section can be identified for defects with a length exceeding 0.1 m. Physical model tests were performed to further validate the feasibility of the proposed quantitative soil nail integrity testing method. Microbial-induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP) is an emerging in situ grouting technology for sand ground improvement, slope stability, and subgrade reinforcement, featuring rapid implementation and low energy consumption. The precipitated calcium carbonate crystals can rapidly fill and cement sand particles so as to form a new soil structure that effectively reduces liquefaction sensitivity and dynamic damage. The centrifuge shake table test is an effective method for simulating liquefaction of sandy soil layers under shear wave excitation. Many studies have been conducted on this topic in recent years. However, the study on dynamic response, especially the liquefaction resistance of MICP-cemented sands by centrifuge shake table tests, is rare. In order to investigate the cementation effect of microbial treatment, centrifuge shake table tests were performed on two models, i.e., untreated and MICP cemented sand model. The test results indicated that, compared with untreated sand model, the liquefaction resistance of the MICP model was significantly improved in terms of acceleration response, shear stiffness, stress–strain relationship, and ground surface settlement. This study contributes to a better understanding of the mechanical law in the liquefaction process and enriches the engineering application of microbial grouting treatment of sand foundation prone to liquefaction. This paper introduces a novel approach to analyze the seismic stability of rock slopes using the stress characteristics method (SCM). Based on a prescribed factor of safety (FS), the slope profile (SP) is forthrightly determined without involving any optimization technique. A theoretical model is developed to execute the seismic analysis by coupling the SCM with the modified pseudo-dynamic (MPD) approach. The SCM obliterates the necessity of predefined slope geometry and slip surfaces in the analysis, whereas the MPD approach captures more credible nonuniform seismic inertia forces during earthquake excitation. The generalized Hoek–Brown criterion is employed to model the nonlinear strength characteristics of the rock mass. With different recommended values of FS, chart solutions comprising SPs are presented to readily evaluate the seismic stability of rock slopes. A comprehensive parametric analysis is conducted to interpret the behavior of obtained SPs under the influence of various input parameters. The overall slope angle of the present curvilinear SPs is found to be in close agreement with that of traditional linear SPs reported in the literature. Moreover, the legitimacy of the current methodology for designing open pit mines and assessing the safety status of existing rock slopes is showcased through different case studies along with a numerical simulation of the derived SPs. Landslides or slope failure pose a significant risk to human lives and infrastructures. The stability of slopes is controlled by various hydrological processes such as rainfall infiltration, soil water dynamics, and unsaturated soil behavior. Accordingly, soil hydrological monitoring and tracking the displacement of slopes become crucial to mitigate such risks by issuing early warnings to the respective authorities. In this context, there have been advancements in monitoring critical soil hydrological parameters and slope movement to ensure potential causative slope failure hazards are identified and mitigated before they escalate into disasters. With the advent of the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence, and high-speed internet, the potential to use such technologies for remotely monitoring soil hydrological parameters and slope movement is becoming increasingly important. This paper provides an overview of existing hydrological monitoring systems using IoT and AI technologies, including soil sampling, deploying on-site sensors such as capacitance, thermal dissipation, Time-Domain Reflectometers (TDRs), geophysical applications, etc. In addition, we review and compare the traditional slope movement detection systems, including topographic surveys for sophisticated applications such as terrestrial laser scanners, extensometers, tensiometers, inclinometers, GPS, synthetic aperture radar (SAR), LiDAR, and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). Finally, this interdisciplinary research from both Geotechnical Engineering and Computer Science perspectives provides a comprehensive state-of-the-art review of the different methodologies and solutions for monitoring landslides and slope failures, along with key challenges and prospects for potential future study. A certain dumping site is located near a river, and its overall height and step height are relatively high, which makes the influence of rainwater infiltration greater, posing potential hazards under rainfall conditions. Based on the stacking situation of the site and the surrounding environment, the seepage characteristics of the waste dump under rainfall conditions were studied, and the potential hazards of the waste dump slope were analyzed, then the corresponding treatment plans were proposed. The results show that with continuous rainfall, there will be a transient saturation zone on the surface of the waste dump slope and it will continue to expand to the inside of the slope. During the rainfall process, the pore water pressure of the slope increased rapidly to a positive value, then gradually stabilized, and the slope reached a saturated state. Under the influence of rainfall, the relative stability relationship of the dump slope is: slope bottom>slope top>mid-slope, and the potential hazard site is from + 85 m platform to + 170 m platform. Low impact development (LID) practices are rarely implemented on slopes due to concerns about their poor hydrological performance and the potential impact on slope stability. Implementing LIDs on slopes, involving alterations to surface topography and subsurface hydrology (specifically, the formation of a groundwater mound), can pose challenges in maintaining slope stability. However, sloping areas often require LIDs for sustainable development. It is imperative to supplement the conventional design standard to address these challenges. Before proposing specific solutions, the impact of LIDs on slope stability should be understood first. This includes quantifying the extent of changes in slope stability before and after LID implementation, as well as identifying the key factors that influence stability. To address these, we developed a numerical model in HYDRUS‐2D to simulate the hydrological and geotechnical processes of slopes implemented with a two‐stepped bioretention cell (BC) system. The numerical model was calibrated and validated using monitoring data from a stepped BC in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA. Simulation scenarios encompassed three generic slope angles (15°, 20°, and 25°) with and without BCs, two initial groundwater table positions and two inflow volumes. The hydrological process was characterized by the evolution of the groundwater mound, and the geotechnical process was quantified using the factor of safety (FoS). Our findings indicated slope cutting and filling was likely to enhance stability with an increase in the FoS of 0.1. However, the formation of groundwater mounds, resulting from exfiltration, led to an approximate 0.1–0.2 reduction in the FoS, depending on the inflow volume. The subsequent groundwater mound evolution had no further impact on stability. Ultimately, the FoS was slightly reduced by around 0–0.1 due to the combined effect of cutting and filling operations and groundwater mounds. It was generally safe to implement LIDs on 15° slopes. For steeper slopes, special design considerations are necessary, such as reducing the drainage area to strike a balance between hydrological performance and slope safety. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Rainfall is a pivotal factor resulting in the cause of slope instability. The traditional finite element method often fails to converge when dealing with the strongly nonlinear fluid–solid coupling problems, making it impossible to fully analyze the sliding process under the state of slope instability. Therefore, this paper uses the coupling of peridynamics (PD) and the finite element method (FEM) to propose a data exchange mode between the seepage field and the deformation field. The influencing factors of fine particle erosion during rainfall are further considered. According to the damage mechanism of the slope sliding process to the original structure of the soil, a modified erosion constitutive relationship is proposed, which takes into account the destructive effect of plastic deformation on coarse particles. Then, the influence of rainfall duration, rainfall intensity, erosion, and initial saturated permeability coefficient on slope stability was simulated and analyzed. Pre-existing concealed goafs underneath open-pit slopes (PCO-goafs) pose a serious threat to the stability of open-pit slopes (OP-slopes), which is a common problem worldwide. In this paper, the variable weight-target approaching method, equilibrium beam theory, Pratt's arch theory, and numerical simulation are used to analyze the management solutions and stability of five PCO-goaf groups in the Nannihu molybdenum mine located in Luoyang City, Henan Province, China. The five PCO-goaf groups, numbered 1#, 2#, 3#, 4#, and 5#, are divided into four hazard classes, ranging from extremely poor to good stability. The stability of 1#, 2#, and 4# is poor and must be managed by filling, and the design strength of backfill is 1.2 MPa; caving is used to treat 3# and 5#, and the safe thickness of the overlying roof is calculated to be 10.5–41 m. After treatment, the safety coefficient of the slope is greater than 1.2, indicating that the slope is stable. Traditional slope stability analysis methods are time-consuming, complex, and cannot provide fast stability estimates when facing a large amount of slope cases. In this case, artificial neural networks (ANN) provide a better alternative. Based on the ANN, the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm, and the principal component analysis (PCA) method, a novel PCA-PANN model is proposed. Then, a dataset of 307 slope cases covering a wide range of slope geometries and mechanical properties of geomaterial is developed. The hybrid machine learning model trained with the dataset is applied to the factor of safety (FoS) prediction of the actual slope, and three evaluation indicators are introduced to measure the prediction performance of the model. Finally, the sensitivity analysis of input parameters is carried out, and the slope protection strategy for different sensitive factors is proposed. The results show that this new model can quickly obtain the FoS and stable state of the slope without complex calculation, only by providing the relevant characteristic parameters. The correlation coefficient of the PCA-PANN model for slope stability analysis reaches more than 0.97. This paper reviews the current state of the art in relation to geotechnical design in unsorted till deposits, commonly called boulder clays by engineers or diamictons by geologists, generally taking the topics discussed by Professor Eamon Hanrahan in his seminal work of 1977 on Irish tills. These topics include the permeability, stiffness and consolidation characteristics of these deposits, together with their undrained and drained behaviour. The geological background to the deposition of these tills is discussed and the available information on the presence of interglacial soils around the country is presented. Where possible, practical experience from working with these deposits is compared with predictions made from field or laboratory test results: for example, in settlement assessment of foundations, slope stability and in earthworks. Whilst most of Ireland is covered with stony boulder clays, which is the main topic of this paper, the geotechnical parameters of a fine-grained till encountered on the east coast, known as Irish Sea Till or colloquially as Macamore Clay, are discussed and the implications of this on slope stability is investigated. There are several definitions of the factor of safety used to quantitatively characterize slope or landslide stability, which can yield varying results. A comprehensive comparison of the differences among various definitions is necessary for practitioners. In this study, the characteristics of the existing definitions are comprehensively summarized. They can essentially be classified into five categories, including the rotation moment ratio defined by Fellenius, the shear strength-stress ratio defined by Bishop same as the shear strength reduction coefficient, the amplification coefficient of driving forces defined in the China code, the work rate ratio alternatively suitable for the analytical kinematical limit method, and the square root of deformation energy ratio with rigorous physical meaning. Some examples show that the safety factor based on the Fellenius definition is the smallest, while that by the Kulhawy definition is the largest, and relatively increasing by (6.6–13.4)%. The difference among the safety factors defined by Fellenius, Bishop, and Kulhawy is mainly due to distinct assumptions on the interslice forces using different slice methods rather than the different definitions. The shear strength reduction via numerical simulation method is the most complicated approach for slope stability in terms of execution and computation time. The two definitions using the work rate ratio and strength reduction in the limit analysis method are close only for slopes initially approaching the limit state. The square root of the work rate ratio is consequently proposed for comparability. This paper interprets the results from field monitoring which was carried out during vacuum-PVD improvement in a site located near an actively moving slope. Interestingly, the monitoring results showed, among other things, mitigation in the outward lateral movements during and after the preloading process indicating relative stability in the slope and the efficiency of vacuum to mitigate lateral movements during the preloading period. Analyses were made on other field parameters such as pore pressure and settlement, as well as back-calculation of flow parameters to be considered during vacuum preloading design, such as permeability ratio (kh/ks) and horizontal consolidation coefficient (Ch) due to vacuum-PVD, were carried out. Post improvement, appropriate geotechnical properties were obtained from laboratory tests of clay specimens from borehole samples and undrained shear strengths were measured from unconfined compression and field vane shear test. The obtained properties indicated improvement in soft soil properties with a reduction in water content and an increase in maximum past pressure, OCR and undrained shear strengths. The prediction made for final shear strength using past literature, where applied additional incremental stress was reduced with depth, matched well with the shear strengths recorded from field testing. The Hasankeyf Antique City contains several historical structures, ancient and new man-made caves. The dolomitic limestone exposed in the area is the main rock, but weak and not durable. The rock is deteriorated under environmental conditions such as wetting–drying and salt crystallization. The area is now partly under reservoir water of Ilısu dam. The aim of this study is to assess geoenvironmental problems of the Hasankeyf Antique City for different environmental conditions and evaluate possible mitigation measures by considering rock properties and archeological values of the site. Field and laboratory studies as well as various slope stability analyses were carried out. This study indicates that there are problems such as erosion and undercutting of the limestone, block failure associated with collapse of the man-made caves, rock weakening due to cyclic environmental conditions, and slope instabilities dominantly in the form of planar failure and rockfall. An engineering fill is constructed to mitigate the effect of harsh environmental conditions and wave effect due to reservoir water. It also works as lateral support for the steep cliffs. Already detached rocks having no archeological values are removed, and a critical block underneath the Small Palace is stabilized. Furthermore, the Small Palace being partly under reservoir level is raised in such a way that the ancient structure is well above the maximum reservoir level. This work is experimental investigation on the impact of rectangular baffles on the thermo-hydraulic performance of a solar thermal collector. The study was conducted under moderate weather conditions and six cases were studied, including 2M135, 6M135, 10M135, 14M135, 18M135, and a smooth plate case. The results showed that the number and placement of baffles plays a crucial role in improving heat transfer and the best cases in terms of thermal performance were cases V and IV, with maximum values of h = 15.84 W/m2.k, and h = 17.46 W/m2k. The study also found that the heat transfer was greatest at the beginning of the channel and decreased towards the end. Dry–wet cycles can cause significant deterioration of compacted loess and thus affect the safety of fill slopes. The discrete element method (DEM) can take into account the non-homogeneous, discontinuous, and anisotropic nature of the geotechnical medium, which is more capable of reflecting the mechanism and process of instability in slope stability analysis. Therefore, this paper proposes to use the DEM to analyze the stability of compacted loess slopes under dry–wet cycles. Firstly, to solve the complex calibration problem between macro and mesoscopic parameters in DEM models, an efficient parameter optimization method was proposed by introducing the chaotic particle swarm optimization with sigmoid-based acceleration coefficients algorithm (CPSOS). Secondly, during the parameter calibration, a new indicator, the bonding ratio (BR), was proposed to characterize the development of pores and cracks in compacted loess during dry–wet cycles, to reflect the impact of dry–wet action on the degradation of bonding between loess aggregates. Finally, according to the results of parameter calibration, the stability analysis model of compacted loess slope under dry–wet cycling was established. The results show that the proposed optimization calibration method can accurately reflect the trend of the stress–strain curve and strength of the actual test results under dry–wet cycles, and the BR also reflects the degradation effect of dry–wet cycles on compacted loess. The slope stability analysis shows that the DEM reflects the negative effect of dry–wet cycles on the safety factor of compacted loess slopes, as well as the trend of gradual stabilization with dry–wet cycles. Quantifying soil redistribution rates, including both erosion and deposition, is critical for understanding erosion processes, landscape evolution, land management strategies, and the carbon cycle. In the Northeast Pacific coastal temperate rainforest, the interaction of perhumid climate and dense coniferous forest tends to form Spodosols which are soils characterized by a subsurface accumulation of organic matter and iron and aluminum oxides, across a range of contrasting lithologies. Deep Spodosols are frequently found on steep backslopes (up to 60%) of colluvial deposits, where shallower soils would typically be expected. We hypothesized that deep Spodosols in Southeast Alaska indicate slope stability, exhibiting negligible soil redistribution rates and stable surfaces regardless of the lithology. Our objective was to quantify soil redistribution rates for Spodosols formed on steep slopes across a range of lithologies in hilly and mountainous areas of Juneau, AK. We used 239+240Pu isotopes to quantify soil erosion and deposition rates in Spodosols formed on colluvial deposits from tonalite, slate, metavolcanic rock, and phyllite. 239+240Pu measurements revealed negligible soil redistribution rates for all studied pedons, ranging from erosion rates of 0.51 t/ha/year to deposition rates up to 0.43 t/ha/year. No difference was detected between the hill and mountain landforms, further supporting the idea that Spodosols could indicate slope stability over decadal timescales across the region. Understanding the resilience of Spodosols to erosion processes in varied lithologies and landforms on steep slopes is paramount for making informed decisions regarding sustainable land use, landslide risk mitigation, and effective carbon sequestration strategies. AbstractHorizontal wells have the advantages of high production, considerable access to reserves, and effective sand production control; thus, they are potential well types for hydrate exploitation. In the process of hydrate mining, the decomposition of hydrate will cause the deterioration of the mechanical properties of the reservoir, which may induce submarine landslides, especially in the case of multiple horizontal wells, and the risk of submarine landslides is further increased. Therefore, it is necessary to study the influence of the horizontal well pattern adopted for hydrate mining on the stability of submarine slopes. First, a triaxial mechanical experiment of gas hydrate-containing sediments was carried out, and the mechanical parameters of the hydrate-containing sediments were obtained. Second, a thermal-fluid-solid multifield coupling model considering the hydrate phase transition during the production process was established. Finally, on the basis of the finite element strength reduction method, a slope stability evaluation model for hydrate extraction from a horizontal well pattern was established, and the influence of hydrate extraction from horizontal wells on the stability of submarine slope was analyzed. The results show that the peak strength, elastic modulus and cohesion of gas hydrate-containing sediments increase with increasing hydrate saturation. In the process of hydrate exploitation via horizontal wells, with the reduction in well spacing and the increase in the number of production wells, the risk of slope instability increases. Wells positioned along the slope strike are more conducive to slope stability than those positioned perpendicular to the slope strike. The slope stability increases gradually as the slope dip decreases. When the number of wells is the same, the slope stability increases gradually with increasing well spacing and production pressure.
