This article examines Ziti xiaozhi 紫隄小志 and Ziticun xiaozhi 紫隄村小志, compiled by Wang Yong’an 汪永安 in the early Qing Dynasty. Through the analysis of the genesis context and content changes of these local gazetteers, this paper shows how local social conditions and changes in the political environment affected the content of local gazetteers. In particular, I first demonstrate that Wang Yong’an’s inclusion of a large number of good deeds of the Hou 侯 family of Shanggu 上谷 and the Wang 汪 family of Pingyang 平陽 in his gazetteers had two purposes. On one hand, it was an attempt to influence compilers of official gazetteers to include members of their own clans. On the other hand, it reflected his belief that narratives of loyalty and righteousness could change the declining moral standards of Ziti villagers. Second, this paper also points out that in Ziticun xiaozhi, Wang Yong’an deleted sensitive content that expressed nostalgia for the Ming Dynasty and that affirmed the legitimacy of the Southern Ming regime. This reflects the latent self-censorship that emerged among literati during the Yongzheng 雍 正 period and illustrates the profound impact of political changes on how local elites wrote township gazetteers. China in the midst of great changes has both changed and remained unchanged. Chinese society is full of hope but also faces many challenges. In particular, there is a paradox about the hope of the Chinese people. On the one hand, most of them are confident about the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, on the other hand, in the face of their own personal future, they are in a gloomy mood. How to make sense of this situation? This article carries on the analysis from five aspects. First of all, it reveals the objective context for the formation of hope by showing the structural changes of Chinese society since the reform and opening up. Secondly, it discusses the evolution of Chinese people's spiritual world around individualism and consumerism, which is related to the subjective schema of hope. Third, the Chinese Dream is viewed in terms of the supply of social meaning and the construction of a community of hope. Fourth, it analyzes the mental order from the moral deficiency and structural tension in Chinese society. Finally, it examines the situations and hopes of the major social classes in the platform economy. Chinese culture is not bothered by paradoxes, but is used to living with them and looking for opportunities to break through them. Me Shu-yi's family memoir, "Ordinary Family," provides a detailed account of her parents' experiences in twentieth-century China. The memoir explores the lives of common people and everyday life within the context of significant historical events. The author's main goal is to uncover the individual spirit within the larger historical narrative, rather than focusing on specific historical occurrences. Abstract To determine the nature and extent of the emerging field of "health law" scholarship in China, we retrieved 2956 publications about various aspects of health law published up through 2014 in 268 journals from the "Chinese Social Science Citation Index" and from the list of Chinese "Core Journals" maintained by the Peking University Library. By bibliometric analysis, we observed some interesting results which were different from our expectations. The collaboration network among Chinese health law (CHL) authors was relatively small, loose, unstable and early in its development. Kan Tian and Lixin Yang were leading authors, Renmin University of China was the primary institution, and Beijing was the predominant region studying Chinese health law (CHL). Kan Tian ranked 1st in the collaboration network and Lixin Yang published the most number of articles on CHL. Comprehensive universities made up the majority of institutions studying CHL, while medical colleges did not focus on health law research, possibly due to medical schools focusing mainly on clinical education and not attaching as much importance to social and humanistic aspects of medicine. Food safety, health administration, and the general principles of civil law were the main areas of focus in CHL research, which is basically in line with what we expected. Live-streamers in China are predominantly female and heterosexual, so their heterosexual male counterparts barely receives attention. In this paper, we invoke the concept of "emergent masculinities" to critically examine how male live-streamers engage this typically feminine profession. They come in three main types of decreasing prestige: e-sports athletes; shopping guides; and affective entertainers who attract female audiences with friendship and intimacy. This last type enacts a women-pleasing façade that also contradicts the men's own hegemonic masculine upbringing. The two-child policy profoundly impacted on many aspects of Chinese society, ranging from population structure to economic development. Social media served as a public symbolic space for diverse viewpoints on the issue. Situated in a revised public sphere framework, this study explores how the two-child policy was contended by various publics using a semantic network analysis of Sina Weibo posts. The results demonstrate relationships among the various publics comprising family members, gendered individuals, and multiple social institutions. This study examines the various forms of ethnic incorporation present in the daily lives of ethnic Koreans living in Beijing, including the conditions of their integration into Chinese society. On the basis of an ethnographic research (2014–2015) in Wangjing area, an alleged 'Koreatown' in Beijing, this study involves three ethnic categories, namely, South Koreans, Korean Chinese and Han Chinese. The study suggests that Koreatown in Beijing is not a full-fledged ethnic community but a patchwork of ethnic categories, networks and associations. Ethnic cohesion is implicitly disaggregated by the Chinese urban governance over the foreign population embedded in the unfolding trend of internationalisation in Chinese metropolises. As a consequence, Korean cultural elements are incorporated into the increasingly cosmopolitan culture in Chinese metropolises, with ethnic categories maintained. This study considers the experience of China's one-child policy to examine how fertility restrictions affect economic and social outcomes over a lifetime. Using variations in these penalties across provinces and over time, we find that exposure to stricter fertility restrictions when young leads to higher education levels, more white-collar jobs, delayed marriage, and lower fertility rates. Further consequences include lower rates of residing with the elderly and higher household income, consumption, and savings. Finally, exposure to stricter fertility restrictions in early life increases female empowerment. In the context of a patriarchal society, 'women-to-women' violence is often overlooked or under-appreciated as a form of gender-based violence. This is due to its smaller scale and lower profile compared to 'men-to-women' violence, and its perceived lower impact on society. In 2017, in-depth interviews were conducted with 32 never-married single Chinese women aged 30–48 in 13 cities across mainland China, to ascertain how single women in China both perceive and experience 'women-to-women' violence. The field research provided extensive evidence that urban unmarried women over the age of 30 are still negatively perceived in contemporary Chinese society, and are subject to a range of punitive actions including insults, verbal violence and social exclusion. Notably, most of the direct perpetrators of violent acts against single women are married women, who are seen to accept and defend the patriarchal society and value system to vilify the existence of single women. Manifestations of the negative image of single women range from moral condemnation and voicing support for patriarchal gender roles, to verbal and physical attacks on single women. This study contributes to the growing recognition of gender-based 'women-to-women' violence and the public hostility single women face in China, with the hope that greater awareness of the problem can help single women to live in a more tolerant social environment. Protesters in China may face two types of targets. One is the target of blame that is deemed responsible for causing their grievances, whereas the other is believed to be obligated to solve their grievances. Upward targeting occurs when citizens whose grievances are connected to lower-level authorities approach higher-level authorities for solutions. Based on a collection of over 12,000 instances of collective protest in China from 2000 to 2018, this study finds that some groups—such as small groups, veterans, and petitioners—are more likely to resort to upward targeting than others. However, collective actions directed at central authorities are more likely to be suppressed. Blame attribution and the difficulties in coordinating large-scale upward-targeting actions have combined to manifest protest patterns in China. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article explores the phenomenal growth in the popularity of the "little fresh meat" (xiao xian rou) androgynous, effeminate male beauty trend and the rise in the demand for male cosmetic surgery in the context of neoliberal consumer culture in China. This new male beauty trend is rooted in traditional Chinese gentle/benign wen masculinity, but it has also been influenced by the "flower boys" of South Korea and Japan and by Western metrosexuals. Drawing on men's accounts in Beauty Diaries posted on cosmetic surgery apps, the author argues that gentle wen and tough wu are not perceived dualistically by the men who opt for cosmetic surgery. Rather, "gentle yet manly" is a common narrative now invoked in the construction of masculinities. In a neoliberal consumer culture, men have more agency and freedom to engage in the beautification practices associated with femininity, but they are also constrained by hegemonic masculinity and must therefore negotiate with the dominant existing masculinity discourses to find their position in society. The resultant paradoxes in male identity associated with male cosmetic surgery reflect the fluidity and the unsettling nature of the constructions of hybrid masculinities in China. This study examined the role of women's political leadership at the community level in China, a context that has experienced recent political and socioeconomic change and has a distinctive rural-urban divide. Drawing on longitudinal data from the China Family Panel Studies (N range = 40,918-52,406 person-year observations), we found that female community directors outnumbered male directors in urban China but were much less common in rural areas. Female community directors had higher levels of human capital regardless of rural or urban location. Residents living in female-directed communities reported better mental health but not physical health or life satisfaction compared to those living in male-directed communities, and this association was most robust among rural women. For rural women, the mental health benefit of living in female-directed communities was partially explained by reduced personal experience of gender discrimination, suggesting that female leadership fosters ideational change toward women that lowers discriminatory behaviors among constituents. This essay examines a recent craft revival in Northern Fujian Province. Employing the methodological approach of a historical anthropology of techniques and its stress on the operational chain (chaine opératoire), the traditional techniques of Jianzhan tea ware making are considered here as a clear example of a ceramic (and tea) heritage that reached its zenith during the Northern Song Dynasty but faded away after the Yuan Dynasty. Coincidentally, this dark pottery was transmitted to Japan, where it gained renown following the karamono vogue of Chinese art and then the chanoyu tea aesthetics during the 15th century. It is on the Japanese living heritage that Chinese potters have drawn since the late 1970s to bring back the art to its native place of production. Continuity and derivation, finally, are witnessed in the ways this ware is produced, used and commercialized in social contexts, especially regarding its role for social distinction and as a means of forming good relationships (guanxi) in Chinese society. This article reviews administrative issues in the context of decentralized social protection in China. In particular, what are the main obstacles to expanding social insurance coverage for workers in the informal economy? Over the last two decades, China has achieved remarkable progress toward universal social protection when this target was set as a national policy priority. However, the social insurance enrolment of informal economy workers still lags significantly behind. This article reviews the application of the International Labour Organization's definition of informality in the Chinese context and overviews existing pension and health insurances in China. This article discusses the impact of China's inter‐governmental fiscal relations and decentralized social protection in the multilevel government system. The article highlights that under a system of decentralized managed social insurance many informal economy workers choose to opt out of the system because of low benefits and high compliance costs. In this study, asexuality is transcended beyond the spectrum of desire when defined against other identities that offer power, resources, networks, advantages, and disadvantages. Drawing on the insights of intersectional feminism, we use an intersectional lens to examine how Chinese assigned-female-at-birth asexuals in different socioeconomic standings understand and give meanings to asexual identity when they navigate marriage and reproductive norms, and other hegemonic representations and relations. The paper presents three constructions of asexual identity that are derived from different intersectional locations: asexuality as the pinnacle of evolutionary success; a globalized discourse of asexual pride; and indifference to asexual identity. We find that socioeconomic status at the individual and community levels contributes to a sense of asexual pride, albeit in different manners, thus legitimizing an otherwise unaccepted identity. Nevertheless, there are individuals who cannot find pride in their asexual identity. Instead of merely attributing this to oppression, an intersectional approach points to other positionings that enable personal agency. In doing so, we can facilitate a more inclusive and accurate portrayal of globalized asexualities. We also propose that the interplays between resistance and hegemony and inclusion and exclusion are elucidated when asexuality is analyzed through the interactions of social identities. Existing research on the targeted poverty alleviation program in China struggles to explain the dynamics of policy implementation. This article incorporates individual-level factors such as street-level bureaucrats' discretion and behaviors with institutional elements, thus combining structure-centered and actor-centered approaches. The data utilized is from 19 semi-structured interviews with township officials, local village cadres, and villagers located in an eastern province in China. By identifying and coding the policy perspectives of 'street-level bureaucrats' (i.e. village cadres in this case) through a two by two factorial table (combinations of the identifiability and the participation willingness of the target population), this study conceptualizes the policy output of 'behaviors of implementers' to categorize the policy implementation outcomes of the program. The four policy implementation patterns identified are supportive policy implementation, passive policy implementation, unsustainable policy implementation, and performative policy implementation. By isolating these four policy implementation patterns, this research provides insights on local governance and policy implementation in contemporary rural China. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper proposes a new agenda for research on Chinese politics that overcomes the obscuring effect of the ubiquitous 'party-state' construct, finds a substantive place for the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), and thereby reveals dynamics of the interplay between the Party, society and state that otherwise remain hidden. Since the 1980s, the state-society relationship has been the subject of extensive scholarship. Yet most such work treats the CCP as little more than the assumed and elusive source of power behind the state. We show why, in conceptualizing and theorizing this one-party state's state-society relationship, it is imperative to separate 'Party' from 'state,' to bring the former under close scrutiny, and to do so in a way that accounts for the multidimensional, multidirectional interplay between state, society and Party. We combine a historical perspective with analysis of political documents and discourse to demonstrate how research toward this new agenda might be pursued. By doing so, we offer examples of the dimensions and dynamics of governance processes, such as tensions between Party and state imperatives, the implications of Party reliance on the state to influence society, and the possible spaces for actor agency that, without this proposed shift, go ignored or misinterpreted. Since the implementation of the two‐child policy in China in 2016, it is unclear how professional women's labor force outcomes and family commitments have changed. Using interviews with 26 professional women with two children in Shanghai, we examined their work–life transitions and labor market outcomes. We found that the overarching constraints the interviewees faced included a lack of institutional childcare support, low paternal participation and increased physical and cognitive childcare labor. The women also experienced different constraining and enabling factors, leading to four types of labor market outcomes: enhancement, rebound, interruption and stagnation. Most of the interviewees who experienced career upward mobility after giving birth to a second child were urban singleton daughters who received tremendous parental support. Some participants experienced career interruption due to a lack of social support. The state should ensure family‐friendly work environments and promote paternal participation to reduce women's work–life conflict and address gender inequality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Chinese cities, especially large cities, are in urgent need of urban redevelopment but social conflicts in redevelopment processes have threatened social stability. Public participation has been stipulated in national policies to alleviate these conflicts and the responsibility to implement these policies has been delegated to local governments. Therefore, the features of public participation may differ between Chinese cities. Yet, a systematic investigation of this possible heterogeneity is lacking. This article adapts 11 features of governance to build a framework to compare public participation in urban redevelopment in Beijing and Guangzhou. Findings show that the two cities are similar in five features (policy instruments, policy integration, initiators, position of stakeholders, policy level at which citizens operate) but differ in six (policy goals, policy–science interface, power base of citizens, model of representation, rules of interaction and mechanisms of social interaction), making citizens in urban redevelopment in Guangzhou more powerful than their counterparts in Beijing. The observed shift towards urban micro-redevelopment might further strengthen the power of citizens in urban redevelopment in Beijing, but might weaken their power base in Guangzhou. Social insurance in mainland China long catered to populations that were assumed to remain in one place permanently. In recent decades, however, internal and transnational labour migration has been on the rise. Building on existing research about internal migrants' social security, this study asks how different groups of external labour migrants cope with the social risk shifts induced by mobility. It focuses on documented migrants from UN member countries; from Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macao; and on undocumented migrants. It employs the resource environment approach, which integrates a transnational perspective and acknowledges informal sources of security. Focusing on healthcare, the study argues that informal practices affect the majority of external migrants irrespective of nationality or migration status, protecting expatriates from double coverage, causing low-income migrants to fall through the gaps, but also enabling access to healthcare for undocumented migrants. Despite mandatory participation, effective migrant coverage of the Urban Employees' Social Insurance (UESI) remains low. The system is highly decentralized with incomplete internal and external portability, and cities have considerable leeway over their own migration and welfare regimes. Migrants from more socio-economically developed areas tend to have a greater reliance on public services and security from the sending areas, or on high-end private alternatives. Conversely, as the example of Nigerian traders illustrates, undocumented migrants piece together their protective arrangements from individual networks and community institutions. Religious organizations from the Global South also reach out transnationally and provide informal protections to migrant communities. There have been various attempts to capture the direction of welfare provision in Japan and the People's Republic of China (PRC) as a regionally coherent welfare regime, following on from attempts by the welfare regime literature to categorize nation-states by the characteristics of their welfare provision in the West. However, stark differences between the PRC and Japan as regional neighbours, and even within the regions of each country, pose a challenge to this kind of macro-level theorizing. This special issue seeks to supplement macro perspectives on welfare regimes by exploring a range of welfare policies across both states from an ethnographic, bottom-up perspective, which captures the dynamic nature of welfare and highlights the importance of understanding how local actors request, interpret, and implement risk management strategies. The management of social risks is shown not to have one clear direction determined by, for example, market logic: instead, this special issue highlights the ways in which the burden of risk shifts between family, market, state, and communities unevenly over time, reflecting underlying institutional norms which are always up for negotiation. In doing so, this special issue emphasizes the importance of local, contextualized understandings of welfare, and suggests that the comparative welfare regimes literature should seek the micro-institutional foundations of welfare provision as the basis for comparison. Current research on social time and temporal change theories have not yet investigated the nature of this change in depth through hypothesis testing endeavours. In this paper we respond to this research desiderate through creating quantitative empirical proof for Germany and China. Our findings are based on theories of temporal digital change and the third level of digital divide, i.e. online use vs. non-use concerning time, the rural-urban divide, and the gender divide. We show that digital media enhance the focus on social time, namely 8 out of 9 dimensions of temporal understanding as a specific form of how people deal with and plan time in Germany and China. Moreover, there are significant differences between online users and off-liners both within and across the countries. The degree of urbanization proves to have an influence on temporal digital change, while gender differences were not found to be significant in our study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper explores the 'Sinicization' of Islam in Mainland China, focusing on Moon Lake Mosque (a historically significant mosque in Ningbo Zhejiang Province). Islam has a long history within China, but it is upon the CCP's recent attempts to align Islam with 'Chinese Socialist Characteristics' that we explore here. Examining the propaganda around the mosque, we trace how tensions about Islam are both represented and (circum)navigated. These posters correlate aspects of Islam to the Socialist Core Values, but particular omissions of the original Qur'an secularize these passages in order to claim Communist Party moral guardianship and legitimacy. We demonstrate how the framing of this mosque elides its place in Ningbo's past, and how the absence of representations of historic religious diversity exotifies the mosque and renders such diversity invisible. We argue that ultimately inherent in such Sinicization is the problematic question of what it means for religion to 'be' 'Chinese'. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Topics discussed include the proliferation of informal settlements in China without tenure security or basic services and amenities, comparison of housing policies in the three countries showed new forms of exclusion for inhabitants of informal settlements, demolition with new construction as an approach to redeveloping urban villages in Guangzhou.

Frontline Bureaucrats Enforce the One Child Policy in China How do authoritarian states implement policies that curb individual freedom? In this article, I examine the implementation of the One Child Policy in China, which has had an enormous impact on Chinese society and yet has received little attention from political scientists. I argue that the success or failure of the policy hinged on using frontline bureaucrats to infilltrate society. Important theories suggest that bureaucratic penetration may increase bureaucrats' responsiveness to citizens and decrease implementation of the law. Drawing on a unique dataset and natural experiment, I show the opposite to be true in China: a one standard deviation increase in bureaucratic penetration lowers over-quota births by 2 to 7 percentage points. There is suggestive evidence that bureaucrats leverage their social embeddedness to control society. The article describes the history of China with its social and economic implications. It highlights the minority nationalities' population of latest national census in 2010 with the existence of Indigenous Peoples; also focuses on establishing autonomous areas of nationalities, setting up their own local governance and the right to practice their own language and culture.

Contemporary Chinese feminism has drawn much attention in academe and popular media, yet its ontological roots and the politics of naming has largely escaped scrutiny. This paper first demonstrates that China's post-socialist transition has given rise to a new gendered structure of power, in response to which urban young women have assembled various discursive and material practices in their struggles. Second, the social rupture and shock caused by these practices have led to the popular perception that an undifferentiated "feminism" has been proliferating in contemporary China. Combining historiographical and ethnographic research, this paper maps out the overall landscape of women's agitations and identifies two latent strands of "made-in-China feminism" – with varied sociopolitical significance – that engage with cultural norms at the grassroots level. In grasping China's ongoing gender antagonism with its full complexity, this paper discusses the limitations of existing scholarly approaches to contemporary Chinese feminism. This analysis contributes to the ongoing conversation on imagining a feminist politics in non-Western societies that disrupts the political, economic, and cultural orders all at once. China is fighting a tough battle against separatist terrorism perpetrated by militant Muslim Uyghurs in the far-western region of Xinjiang. De-radicalization is one of the policies the authorities in Xinjiang have recently taken to address the upsurge in terrorist violence. This paper consists of five parts. The first part deals with the background against which the de-radicalization strategy was conceived and developed. The second part discusses several major approaches to the strategy such as "five keys," "four prongs," "three contingents," "two hands," and "one rule." The third part presents custodial, post-imprisonment, and social programs for targeting three groups of people: imprisoned radicals, released radicals, as well as those who are radicalized but not prosecuted. The fourth part describes programs for engaging communities in order to win over politically reliable people from civil society for support in de-radicalization. Mutual aid was a mechanism that emerged under the condition of insufficient factors of production in traditional Chinese society; it aimed to improve the productivity of factors by applying the principle of "deduct from the more-than-sufficient and add to the insufficient." Mutual aid worked to improve the productivity of factors chiefly because it could lead to high efficiency through the full and economical utilization of factors of production that were given and limited. Unlike the input of modern capital that could result in immediate gain in productivity, mutual aid only led to indirect and passive improvements in productivity. Increased social interaction through mutual aid could further boost laborers' morale and willingness to compete with one another, thus adding to improved productivity. Finally, mutual aid reduced the time spent on and the consumption of factors of production, thus permitting more farmers to engage in wasteland reclamation, sharpening of farming skills, and construction of water-control projects, which also contributed to agricultural growth. The concept of human dignity is important for understanding discussions of rights, religion, and society in contemporary China. While the neoliberal idea of "public reason" abstracts human rights from cultural particularities and religious convictions to provide an idea of universal rights, human dignity includes these social and cultural elements to provide an account of human rights in social context. Classical conceptions of political virtue, which can be found in both Chinese (Confucian) and Western (Aristotelian) traditions, provide a background for understanding human dignity and thus offer some guidance for this contemporary task. Focusing on the "human aspect" of human rights, this article adopts a "social construction" model of human rights to expound the problem of human rights in China in its cultural and social settings. It invokes distinctive Chinese thought (Confucianism and socialist discourse in particular) on the human being and human rights and explores the contribution of Christian practice and theology to human rights discourse in China. It proposes a conception of human rights as a form of "social-theological" construction in China. This study employs the social quality approach to analyze public evaluation of society in China based on the data of the 2017 Chinese Social Survey. It includes both objective and subjective survey indicators of the conditional factors of social quality, namely, socioeconomic security, social cohesion, social inclusion, and social empowerment, as independent variables. Regression results reveal most of these indicators are significantly related to the overall evaluation of society though with different explanatory power. Ethnographic knowledge production exists in implicit tension with the tenets of a critical disciplinary politics normalized in the reflexive critiques of the late 20th century. Anthropologists have responded with numerous theoretical 'turns,' which in different ways attempt to reconcile the conflicting imperatives of critical attention to histories of power and inequality, with rich and nuanced accounts of cultural worlds and peoples' agentive roles in them. This article proposes Situated Comparison as one possible methodological approach to this epistemological dilemma. We propose explicit attention to multiple local understandings of categorical social differentiation, which we compare on a plane of epistemic equality with academic theories of those same boundaries. Examples from two disparate fieldwork contexts—classed ideas of ethical sociality in the rural American South; and guanxi and social intimacy in Shanghai, China—demonstrate the potential of this methodology for reflexive engagement with ideas of personhood and self across lines of difference. The article examines Chinese leftist intellectuals’ visions of China’s future as they were published in a special issue of Dongfang zazhi (Eastern Miscellany) in 1933. It places their texts in the international tradition of socialism and in particular the tensions between Marxism and “utopian socialism.” Two variants of socialism can be identified in the Chinese texts: “Datong socialism,” the moral vision of a society of freedom and equality, and Soviet socialism, the vision of an industrialized society with features and institutions as in the Soviet Union. In 2018, there was no record of violent incidents carried out by Uyghurs in China. As such, Uyghur-perpetrated violence in the country has fallen to its lowest level since 2008.1 However, this positive development should not be seen as an indicator that the volatile Xinjiang province will continue to experience enduring peace and stability in the long run. Instead, it has been argued that the recent drop in violence has been maintained largely due to strict security measures and mass surveillance tactics.2 The increasingly complex nature of the issue indicates that the potential exists for Uyghur violence to escalate. This is specifically in light of the reported inception of a stateinitiated mass 'reeducation' campaign for Uyghur and other Muslim minorities across the province. By reportedly sending Xinjiang's Muslim population to 'vocational education centres', China's attempts to 'prevent extremism' may lead to a resurgence of ethnic unrest in Xinjiang. Domestic violence is not uncommon in China. Myths and misconceptions about it do exist, especially in the context of rapid social changes. Compared with its Western counterparts, the study on domestic violence in China is considered rudimentary and of low priority. Empirical studies, especially those measuring the correlates and/or risk factors related to domestic violence, are still lacking. This special issue aims to advance understanding on domestic violence through much-needed empirical research. It also demonstrates joint efforts by local Chinese scholars and their Western counterparts to strengthen collaboration in this important research area. Based on relatively large sample surveys, the articles incorporated in this special issue provide relatively accurate estimates of factors related to domestic violence and responses to it in mainland China and Taiwan. This introductory article sheds light on commonalities and divergences in a selected group of rising powers' (namely Brazil, India, China and Turkey) understanding and applications of conflict management and attempts to explain the priorities in their conflict management strategies from conceptual/theoretical and empirical aspects. The case studies in this special issue point to the evolving nature of conflict management policies of rising powers as a result of their changing priorities in foreign and security policy and the shifts observed in the international order since the end of the Cold War. The country specific perspectives provided in this issue have also proven right the potentialities of rising powers in managing conflicts, as well as their past and ongoing challenges in envisaging crises in both their own regions and extra-regional territories. The article begins by decoding the driving factors of rising powers' conflict management strategies and their commonalities and divergences in peacebuilding policies. It then jumps into the theoretical and conceptual assessment of their conflict management approaches. In the third part, the issue delves into the evidence-based assessment their converging and differing conflict management policies depending on the nature of the conflict, its involving actors and its geographical location.
