In the semi-arid tropics, sorghum and pearl millet or key source of income and calories. Sustainable intensification is therefore needed to ensure food security. These two cereals are largely grown in smallholder farming system and cultivated at low density, opening an avenue to increase yield through this agronomic management. Through field and lysimetric trials carried out in India and Senegal this work showed the possibility to increase significantly, the biomass and grain yield in both species, with the same irrigation regime and fertilization. We highlighted a lowering of the vapour pressure deficit (VPD) in the canopies of high density, resulting in an increase in water use efficiency of the crops. While both crops responded positively to increased density, there were also large specie differences in the genotypic variation of the response to density, namely a strong genotype x density interaction in sorghum for biomass and WUE, but none in pearl millet. The genotypic variation in the degree of WUE response found in sorghum and its link with biomass accumulation led to investigate putative differences in the transpiration response of the crops to the evaporative demand. We tested this hypothesis outdoors with canopy-grown sorghum plants in field and lysimeter experiments. The response of the evapotranspiration was measured against the evaporative demand. This response was linear and, with WUE, showed large genetic variation. WUE was surprisingly higher in genotypes with the highest transpiration response to the evaporative demand (Penman-Monteith). These genotypes were also those that allowed maximum light penetration into the canopy. This work opens the door to intensification, in the short term by increasing sowing density in drylands using sorghum and pearl millet cultivars that show a strong response to density, and in the medium term by selecting sorghum cultivars adapted to high density.; Dans les régions tropicales semi-arides, le sorgho et le mil sont des sources essentielles de revenus et de calories. Une intensification durable est donc nécessaire pour assurer la sécurité alimentaire. Ces deux céréales sont en grande partie cultivées dans des systèmes de petites exploitations et cultivées à faible densité, ce qui ouvre la voie à une augmentation du rendement grâce à cette gestion agronomique. A travers des essais au champ et des essais lysimétriques réalisés en Inde et au Sénégal, ce travail a montré la possibilité d'augmenter significativement la biomasse et le rendement en grain des deux espèces, avec le même régime d'irrigation et la même fertilisation. Nous avons mis en évidence une diminution du déficit de pression de vapeur (VPD) dans les canopées de haute densité, résultant en une augmentation de l'efficacité d'utilisation de l'eau des cultures. Alors que les deux cultures ont répondu positivement à l'augmentation de la densité, il y avait également de grandes différences entre les espèces dans la variation génotypique de la réponse à la densité, à savoir une forte interaction génotype x densité dans le sorgho pour la biomasse et la WUE, mais aucune dans le millet perlé. La variation génotypique dans le degré de réponse pour WUE trouvée chez le sorgho et son lien avec l'accumulation de biomasse ont conduit à étudier les différences putatives dans la réponse de transpiration des cultures à la demande evaporative. Nous avons testé cette hypothèse en plein air avec des plants de sorgho cultivés en canopée dans des expériences en champ et en lysimètre. La réponse de l'évapotranspiration a été mesurée en fonction de la demande evaporative. Cette réponse était linéaire et, avec le WUE, a montré une grande variation génétique. Le WUE était étonnamment plus élevé dans les génotypes avec la réponse de transpiration la plus élevée à la demande evaporative (Penman-Monteith). Ces génotypes étaient également ceux qui permettaient une pénétration maximale de la lumière dans la canopée. Ce travail ouvre la porte à l'intensification, à court terme en augmentant la densité de semis dans les zones sèches en utilisant des cultivars de sorgho et de millet perlé qui montrent une forte réponse à la densité, et à moyen terme en sélectionnant des cultivars de sorgho adaptés à une densité élevée.

Les politiques agricoles visant à développer des cultures en tenant compte de la biodiversité locale demeurent marginales. Pour définir ce qu’il convient de considérer dans le retour à des « céréales locales » en réponse aux changements climatiques, nous avons mis en perspective des résultats de deux projets interdisciplinaires conduits dans des zones sèches du du Sénégal et de l’Inde. Le premier, situé dans le Sahel sénégalais, « Relier la diversité agricole à la qualité de l’alimentation par l’analyse sociale des pratiques féminines et de l’alimentation » (DIVA), visait à analyser les impacts de l’intensification rizicole sur la biodiversité agricole et alimentaire et le second, situé dans la zone sèche du Deccan (Sud de l’Inde), « Accompagner l'adaptation de l'agriculture irriguée au changement climatique » (ATCHA), a étudié les adaptations de l'agriculture irriguée face aux changements climatiques, 30 ans après la révolution verte (RV). L’analyse transversale a été réalisée au prisme du couple de céréales riz irrigué et sorgho pluvial en mettant l’accent sur les activités féminines liées à ces cultures. Cette analyse a fait émergé les liens forts entre les conséquences agro-environnementales des changements agricoles analysés, leurs traductions alimentaires et les pertes culturelles qui en découlent : l’intensification du riz dans la vallée du fleuve Sénégal et celles de la RV en Inde font non seulement décliner la biodiversité agricole des céréales locales, mais endommagent les capacités d’adaptation et la qualité nutritionnelle des repas et la qualité de vie. L’éclairage sur les activités féminines permet aussi de mettre en évidence leurs propres difficultés pour maintenir une certaine diversité agricole et alimentaire. Or ces systèmes basés sur les céréales « résistent » en termes de variétés locales et de savoirs associés comme le montre le retour du « système des millets », les mils et sorghos indiens marginalisés par la RV, promus dans certains États de l’Inde sous l’impulsion de mouvements sociopolitiques face aux changements climatiques., Agricultural policies aimed at developing crops that take into account local biodiversity remain marginal. To define what should be considered in the return to "local cereals" in response to climate change, we put into perspective the results of two interdisciplinary projects conducted in dry areas of Senegal and India. The first, located in the Senegalese Sahel, « Relier la diversité agricole à la qualité de l’alimentation par l’analyse sociale des pratiques féminines et de l’alimentation “(DIVA), aimed to analyze the impacts of rice intensification on agricultural and food biodiversity, and the second located in the dry zone of the Deccan (South India), "Accompagner l'adaptation de l'agriculture irriguée au changement climatique" (ATCHA), studied the adaptations of irrigated agriculture to climate change, 30 years after the Green Revolution (GR). The cross-sectional analysis was conducted through the lens of the irrigated rice and rainfed sorghum cereal pair, with a focus on women's activities related to these crops. This analysis revealed strong links between the agro-environmental consequences of the agricultural changes analyzed, their food translations and the cultural losses that result: the intensification of rice in the Senegal River Valley and of VR in India not only cause a decline in the agricultural biodiversity of local cereals, but also damage the adaptive capacities and nutritional quality of meals and the quality of life. Focusing on women's activities also highlights their own difficulties in maintaining agricultural and food diversity. Yet these cereal-based systems are "resilient" in terms of local varieties and associated knowledge, as evidenced by the return of the ‘millets system’, Indian millets and sorghums marginalized by GR, promoted in some states of India under the impetus of socio-political movements in response to climate change.

Les associations céréales-légumineuses constituent un des systèmes de culture les plus couramment pratiqués en Afrique sub-saharienne. Malgré les multiples avantages agroécologiques de l'association, les rendements de l'association sorgho-niébé sont faibles en zone soudano-sahélienne du Burkina Faso. Notre étude vise à améliorer la productivité de ce système de culture, en se basant sur la diversité variétale. De façon spécifique, notre étude vise à (i) caractériser le type d'association sorgho-niébé le plus pratiqué dans la zone soudano-sahélienne, (ii) sélectionner des variétés contrastées de sorgho et de niébé, acceptables par les producteurs pour l'association, (iii) évaluer les performances agronomiques de 13 variétés de sorgho en association et identifier les traits agro-morphologiques des variétés améliorant la productivité dans ce système de culture, (iv) évaluer l'effet de 11 variétés de niébé sur les performances agronomiques du sorgho et du niébé en association et (v) évaluer le potentiel d'adaptation des associations sorgho-niébé aux climats futurs. Pour atteindre ces objectifs, des groupes de discussion, des enquêtes individuelles auprès de 170 producteurs et un suivi de 80 parcelles paysannes ont été réalisés dans trois communes de la région du Centre-Nord du Burkina Faso. Ensuite, une sélection participative de variétés de sorgho et de niébé a été conduite à la station de recherche de Saria dans le Centre-Ouest du pays. Deux expérimentations distinctes ont été conduites afin d'évaluer les performances agronomiques des variétés sélectionnées soit, 13 variétés de sorgho en association avec une même variété de niébé d'une part, et d'autre part, 11 variétés de niébé en association avec une même variété de sorgho. Enfin, le modèle de culture STICS a été calibré et utilisé pour évaluer l'effet des climats futurs sur les rendements du sorgho et du niébé en fonction des variétés et des systèmes de culture. Les résultats ont montré que l'association sorgho-niébé dans le même poquet est le système de culture le plus pratiqué par 98% des enquêtés. Elle se pratique essentiellement avec des variétés locales (92% pour le sorgho et 67% pour le niébé). Les rendements sont très variables (CV=74% pour le sorgho et 47%pour le niébé) et faibles avec en moyenne 416 kg/ha de sorgho et 240 kg/ha de niébé. La caractérisation des variétés a permis de sélectionner 13 variétés de sorgho, contrastées sur le plan morphologique, racinaire et la teneur relative en chlorophylle. Au niveau du niébé, 11 variétés contrastées sur la base de la phénologie et des rendements en biomasse et en grains ont été sélectionnées. L'évaluation des performances de ces variétés en association a montré des LER supérieurs ou égaux à 1 (variant de 1,00 à 1,79) dans les deux expérimentations, indiquant une meilleure productivité en grains de l'association pour l'ensemble des variétés. Des combinaisons optimales de productivité ont été obtenues avec les variétés de sorgho CSM 63E, Pisnou et PSE08 G1/21-1G1, et les variétés de niébé Kvx396-4-5-2D, Yiisyande, Niizwe et Tiligré. La durée de cycle du sorgho, la hauteur, et la teneur en chlorophylle dans les feuilles du sorgho ont été les caractères qui ont le plus contribué à la variabilité des rendements en grains des variétés de sorgho. Tandis que la durée du cycle, la longueur des ramifications, et le ratio de compétitivité du niébé ont été les caractères du niébé les plus influents sur les rendements en grains du sorgho. Par ailleurs, l'analyse des scénarii climatiques a montré des changements de rendements à l'horizon 2050, variant de -100% à +200% pour le sorgho et -60% à +80% pour le niébé. Le climat futur relativement froid et sec a été le plus favorable aux rendements des deux cultures, contrairement au climat froid et humide. Les rendements ont été plus stables en association qu'en culture pure, pour le sorgho local et les deux variétés de niébé. En conclusion, notre étude montre que l'association sorgho-niébé dans le même poquet améliore la productivité des cultures. Le choix de la variété de niébé est important pour une meilleure productivité du système.

Intercropping is a key entry point for sustainable intensification of cropping systems in sub-Saharan Africa where variable rainfall conditions prevail. Crop simulation models can complement field experiments to assess the agronomic and environmental performances of intercropping systems under diverse climatic conditions, including hypothetical future climate. So far, crop models that can handle intercropping, such as STICS, have not often been extensively evaluated for tropical conditions and for species grown by farmers in sub-Saharan Africa. The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of the calibrated STICS model to simulate sorghum-cowpea intercropping systems in rainfed conditions in West Africa. We used data from field experiments conducted at the N'Tarla Agronomic Station in Mali in 2017 and 2018. Two varieties of sorghum (local and improved) with contrasting photoperiod sensitivities were grown as sole crop and intercropped with cowpea, with additive design. Two sowing dates and two levels of mineral fertilization were also investigated. Model simulations were evaluated with observed data for phenology, leaf area index (LAI), aboveground biomass, grain yield and in-season soil moisture. Large variations in aboveground biomass of sorghum and cowpea was observed in the experiment (i.e. 3.5 – 9.6 t/ha for sorghum and 0.4–2.5 t/ha for cowpea), owing to the treatments (i.e. sole vs intercrop, early vs late sowing, no fertilizer input vs fertilizer input). Such variations were satisfactorily reproduced by the model, with EF of 0.81 in calibration and 0.58 in evaluation (with relative rRMSE of 23 % and 43 %) across crops. Sorghum AGB simulations were more accurate (rRMSE of 21 % and EF of 0.54) than cowpea AGB simulations (rRMSE of 25 % and EF of −0.09). The two main observed features of the intercropping system were well reproduced by the model. Firstly, cowpea and sorghum aboveground biomass decreased with intercropping compared with sole cropping, and the decrease in cowpea biomass was greater than the decrease in sorghum biomass. Secondly, despite a reduction in sorghum and cowpea yield, Land Equivalent Ratio of the intercropping for aboveground biomass was always above one. With regard to grain yield, observed LER was above one only in the non-fertilized treatment. The model failed at reproducing this behavior, probably because of insufficiently accurate calibration of the process leading to grain yield formation: rRMSE for grain yield was 49 % in calibration and 41 % in evaluation. Based on these findings, we discuss avenues to improve model calibration and use the model to explore options for sustainable intensification in land constrained sub-Saharan Africa.

Objectif : Ce travail a pour objectif d’évaluer la diversité agro morphologique des variétés améliorées et locales des Sorghos pluviaux à double usage de l’Extrême-Nord Cameroun et de calculer les paramètres génétiques pouvant orienter une amélioration variétale. Méthodologie et résultats : Un dispositif en blocs complétement randomisés à quatre répétitions a été mise en place. Les résultats révèlent qu’il existe une diversité agro morphologique du point de vue des caractères végétatifs et de rendement repartie en 05 classes au sein des 21 variétés des sorghos testées. Des faibles écarts existent entre les coefficients de variation phénotypique et génotypique et une forte héritabilité au sens large pour tous les caractères traduisant une faible influence des facteurs environnementaux sur l’expression des performances des variétés testées. Conclusion et application des résultats : Les 5 classes obtenues pourraient servir comme parents élites dans un programme d’amélioration et de valorisation pour la création des variétés répondant aux besoins des producteurs. La diversité génétique observée au sein des sorghos à double usage de l’Extrême-Nord du Cameroun pourrait être exploitée dans les programmes de sélection du sorgho. English title: Agro morphological diversity of local and improved dual purpose of rainy season sorghum varieties of the Far North Cameroon Abstract Objectives: This study was conducted to determine the agromorphological diversity of the improved and local dual purpose rainy season sorghum varieties in the Far North of Cameroon and to evaluate the genetic parameters, which can orientate genetic improvement. Methodology and Results: a randomized complete block design with four replications was used. Results showed an agro morphological diversity structured around vegetative and yield traits. 21 varieties were distributed into five groups. Difference low analysis of genotypic and phenotypic parameters and High estimated broad sense heritability recorded for all characters showed that there was low influence of the environmental factors on the performances of the varieties Conclusion and Application of results: Five (5) groups obtained may be used as elite parents in a breeding program and valorization program for the development of varieties to that will fulfill the needs of producers. The genetic diversity observed among the dual purpose sorghum varieties of Far-North of Cameroon could be exploited in sorghum selection program. International audience; An ex post analysis of the impact of research projects related to Participatory Breeding (PB) of sorghum in Burkina Faso was carried out in 2015 and 2016 using the "Impress" method developed by CIRAD. The sorghum PB approach emerged in Burkina Faso in the late 1990s as a response to the very low adoption of improved varieties released by the conventional breeding program. This approach represents a paradigm shift from a research approach focused solely on the development of "high-yielding varieties", irrespective of the social context in which these varieties are to be used, towards the development of varieties, seed and their dissemination within a multi-stakeholder framework. The present study aims to assess the impact of the sorghum PB program and the activities related to seed production and dissemination carried out in Burkina Faso over a period of 20 years. Detailed mappings of the timeline and the actors that have been involved in the innovation process, as well as the impact pathway, have been established. The causal relationships between outputs, outcomes and impacts have been developed on the basis of 67 impact descriptors provided by research partners and beneficiaries during participatory workshops. Around thirty measurable impact indicators were assessed by means of individual or focusgroup interviews and by means of secondary data sources. The three major outputs of the study were: the new improved varieties (IV) resulting from the PB actions; the mini-pack seed strategy; and the new skills acquired by the farmer organizations regarding sorghum improvement and certified seed production. The appropriation of these outputs by the farmer organizations not only brought structure to the experimentation networks, but also ensured the promotion and dissemination of the new varieties, and the establishment of a decentralised certified seed production scheme. One major positive impact was the significant increase in the use of sorghum IVs not only in the villages covered by the program but also in neighbouring areas. The expansion and performance of these new IVs has helped reduce the hunger gap while increasing the revenues of farmers involved in seed production. Furthermore, the research projects helped bring structure to the national seed sector as well as to the certified seed market, where the farmer seed production Unions consolidated by the PB projects now play an important role in the orientation of national legislation. The experimental method of impact assessment used in this analysis explores and makes visible the complex multidimensional and multi-stakeholder processes that have helped shape technological innovation and its impact on development. Such impact assessments can also elucidate the role of research in reinforcing the individual and collective capacities needed for innovating and testing out new technologies, that is, new varieties and seed production practices according to local constraints and/or opportunities.

Après l’édification des barrages sur le fleuve Sénégal, l’agriculture irriguée devait progressivement remplacer l’agriculture de décrue dans la moyenne vallée. Néanmoins, lorsque la crue est d’ampleur suffisante, on observe encore des cultures de décrue dans le lit majeur. Cette étude, réalisée entre juin 2016 et décembre 2019 dans la cuvette de Podor (Sénégal), vise à évaluer la surface inondée et celle cultivée en décrue, à caractériser les producteurs et à estimer les productions. Sur quatre crues observées, trois ont été suffisantes pour inonder plus de 1000 ha et exploiter plus de 400 ha, avec principalement du sorgho associé au niébé. Les crues actuelles sont moins fortes qu’avant 1976, mais l’exondation de la zone exploitable est plus précoce et la période propice aux semis est relativement plus longue. La cuvette est exploitée essentiellement par des habitants de la ville de Podor, agriculteurs ou non, irrigants ou non. La production en 2018 a été estimée à 121 tonnes de grains de sorgho et niébé, et 117 tonnes de fourrage pour 470 ha implantés. C’est peu et aléatoire comparé aux cultures irriguées, mais sans investissement, et les résidus de culture sont d’excellents fourrages. L’agriculture de décrue peut donc être une activité complémentaire rentable pour la population locale. Elle pourrait aussi être rentable à l’intérieur des périmètres irrigués de la moyenne vallée, qui sont inondables et ne sont donc exploités, au mieux, qu’une fois par an seulement. Déjà contrôlé à 50 % depuis 1987, le débit du fleuve pourrait être régulé à 70 % par des barrages réservoirs dans un proche avenir. Le soutien de crue deviendra alors indispensable, malgré son impact négatif sur la production électrique, si l’on veut préserver des cultures de décrue ou certains services écosystémiques nés de l’inondation dans la vallée.

This book chapter intends to equip the readers with the basic understanding of what crop models are, answer the common questions which the crop-modelling community usually receives from the other research disciplines, and briefly describe the frequent model misuses which many times hamper broader usage of models in agriculture. We will briefly discuss the diversity of crop models and usage of the appropriate modelling tool to address the questions relevant in crop improvement programs (focus on sorghum/cereals models; APSIM). Furthermore, we will use several examples focusing on sorghum crop of how modelling approaches are currently being deployed to accelerate agricultural/cropping systems production and resilience improvement. Here, we will depict few examples of sorghum model development necessary to reflect agricultural systems in developing countries (e.g., challenges specific to model sorghum crop in Africa). We will point out to emerging directions of model development needed to address some of the global developmental goals and challenges.

Plants Secondary Cell Walls (SCW) represent most of the renewable biomass and participate in some plant physiological functions such as nutrient transport, stress resistance and stiffness. Sorghum is a C4 grass well adapted to nutrient and water limiting conditions. Improving knowledge SCW establishment in sorghum aims at contributing to the development of varieties adapted to biomass sector including animal feed, energy production and the development of bio-materials. The objectives of the thesis presented here are to contribute to the understanding of the molecular mechanisms of SCW regulation and biosynthesis by identifying genes networks involved in this process and validating their role using reverse genetics. As a first step, a phylogenetic analysis including 9 species, allowed us to identify homologies within families of NAC and MYB TF, which are the main regulators of SCW establishment in Arabidopsis and other species. We then built gene co-expression networks of sorghum developing internode and focused on NAC and MYB networks as well as on networks with enrichment in SCW related genes Then, genes identified by these approaches were compared to those located in the chromosomal regions impacting the variability of SCW composition. In a second step we have developed genetic transformation approaches to characterize the role of identified genes by reverse genetics.We have identified 6 modules of co-expressed genes enriched with genes and gene ontologies related to cell walls and in particular 2 modules whose genes are potentially involved in the establishment of SCW. In addition, 122 NAC and 135 MYB were identified in sorghum. Among them, 14 NAC and 25 MYB are involved in the 6 co-expression networks highly enriched in cell wall genes. Of these, 19 are homologues of genes already validated in other species for their role SCW establishment and 20 have no known role. The comparison of the genes belonging to the 6 modules involved in cell wall establishment and chromosomal regions associated with the composition of the biomass revealed an intersect of 70 genes and some structural genes involved in the biosynthesis of the walls but little convergence concerning NAC and MYB TF.Although the optimization of stable genetic transformation protocols was unsuccessful, an efficient protoplast-based transient transformation protocol was optimized. This tool will be mobilized to test the roles of identified TF in networks enriched with cell wall genes.; Les parois secondaires (PS) des plantes représentent la majorité de la biomasse renouvelable et participent à des fonctions physiologiques des plantes comme le transport des nutriments, la résistance à la verse et aux stress. Le sorgho est une graminée en C4 bien adaptée aux conditions limitantes en nutriments et en eau. L’amélioration des connaissances relatives à la mise en place des PS chez le sorgho a pour objectif de contribuer au développement de variétés adaptées aux filières de valorisation de la biomasse incluant l’alimentation animale, la production énergétique et le développement de bio-matériaux. Les objectifs de la thèse présentée ici sont de contribuer à la compréhension des mécanismes moléculaires de la mise en place des PS par l’identification des réseaux de gènes impliqués et la validation de leur rôle par génétique inverse. Dans un premier temps, une analyse phylogénétique comprenant 9 espèces, nous a permis d’identifier les liens d’homologies au sein des familles de facteurs de transcription (FT) NAC et MYB, qui sont les principaux régulateurs de la mise en place des PS chez Arabidopsis et d’autres espèces. Nous avons ensuite construit les réseaux de co-expression géniques impliqués dans la mise en place des entre-nœuds en développement du sorgho et nous nous sommes plus particulièrement intéressés aux réseaux comprenant des NAC et des MYB ainsi qu’à ceux présentant des enrichissements en gènes liés aux PS. Puis les gènes identifiés par ces approches ont été comparés à ceux situés dans les zones chromosomiques impactant la variabilité de la composition des PS. Dans un deuxième temps, nous avons développé des approches de transformation génétique afin de caractériser le rôle des gènes mis en évidence par génétique inverse.Nous avons identifié 6 modules de gènes co-exprimés enrichis en gènes et en ontologies géniques liés aux parois et en particulier 2 modules dont les gènes sont potentiellement impliqués dans la mise en place des PS. En outre, 122 NAC et 135 MYB ont été identifiés chez le sorgho. Parmi eux, 14 NAC et 25 MYB sont impliqués dans les 6 réseaux de co-expression de gènes fortement enrichis en gènes de paroi. Dix-neuf sont des homologues de gènes déjà validés chez d’autres espèces pour leur rôle dans la mise en place des PS et 20 n’ont pas de rôle connu. La comparaison des gènes faisant partie des 6 modules impliqués dans la mise en place des parois et des régions chromosomiques associées à la composition de la biomasse a mis en évidence 70 gènes en commun et quelques gènes de structure impliqués dans la biosynthèse des parois mais peu de convergence concernant les FT NAC et MYB.Bien que l’optimisation des protocoles de transformation génétique stable n’ait pas abouti, un protocole efficace de transformation transitoire basée sur des protoplastes a été optimisé. Cet outil sera notamment mobilisé pour tester les rôles des FT identifiés dans les réseaux enrichis en gènes de parois.

As a first step, a phylogenetic analysis including 9 species, allowed us to identify homologies within families of NAC and MYB TF, which are the main regulators of SCW establishment in Arabidopsis and other species. We then built gene co-expression networks of sorghum developing internode and focused on NAC and MYB networks as well as on networks with enrichment in SCW related genes Then, genes identified by these approaches were compared to those located in the chromosomal regions impacting the variability of SCW composition. In a second step we have developed genetic transformation approaches to characterize the role of identified genes by reverse genetics.We have identified 6 modules of co-expressed genes enriched with genes and gene ontologies related to cell walls and in particular 2 modules whose genes are potentially involved in the establishment of SCW. In addition, 122 NAC and 135 MYB were identified in sorghum. Among them, 14 NAC and 25 MYB are involved in the 6 co-expression networks highly enriched in cell wall genes. Of these, 19 are homologues of genes already validated in other species for their role SCW establishment and 20 have no known role. The comparison of the genes belonging to the 6 modules involved in cell wall establishment and chromosomal regions associated with the composition of the biomass revealed an intersect of 70 genes and some structural genes involved in the biosynthesis of the walls but little convergence concerning NAC and MYB TF.Although the optimization of stable genetic transformation protocols was unsuccessful, an efficient protoplast-based transient transformation protocol was optimized. This tool will be mobilized to test the roles of identified TF in networks enriched with cell wall genes.; Les parois secondaires (PS) des plantes représentent la majorité de la biomasse renouvelable et participent à des fonctions physiologiques des plantes comme le transport des nutriments, la résistance à la verse et aux stress. Le sorgho est une graminée en C4 bien adaptée aux conditions limitantes en nutriments et en eau. L’amélioration des connaissances relatives à la mise en place des PS chez le sorgho a pour objectif de contribuer au développement de variétés adaptées aux filières de valorisation de la biomasse incluant l’alimentation animale, la production énergétique et le développement de bio-matériaux. Les objectifs de la thèse présentée ici sont de contribuer à la compréhension des mécanismes moléculaires de la mise en place des PS par l’identification des réseaux de gènes impliqués et la validation de leur rôle par génétique inverse. Dans un premier temps, une analyse phylogénétique comprenant 9 espèces, nous a permis d’identifier les liens d’homologies au sein des familles de facteurs de transcription (FT) NAC et MYB, qui sont les principaux régulateurs de la mise en place des PS chez Arabidopsis et d’autres espèces. Nous avons ensuite construit les réseaux de co-expression géniques impliqués dans la mise en place des entre-nœuds en développement du sorgho et nous nous sommes plus particulièrement intéressés aux réseaux comprenant des NAC et des MYB ainsi qu’à ceux présentant des enrichissements en gènes liés aux PS. Puis les gènes identifiés par ces approches ont été comparés à ceux situés dans les zones chromosomiques impactant la variabilité de la composition des PS. Dans un deuxième temps, nous avons développé des approches de transformation génétique afin de caractériser le rôle des gènes mis en évidence par génétique inverse.Nous avons identifié 6 modules de gènes co-exprimés enrichis en gènes et en ontologies géniques liés aux parois et en particulier 2 modules dont les gènes sont potentiellement impliqués dans la mise en place des PS. En outre, 122 NAC et 135 MYB ont été identifiés chez le sorgho. Parmi eux, 14 NAC et 25 MYB sont impliqués dans les 6 réseaux de co-expression de gènes fortement enrichis en gènes de paroi. Dix-neuf sont des homologues de gènes déjà validés chez d’autres espèces pour leur rôle dans la mise en place des PS et 20 n’ont pas de rôle connu. La comparaison des gènes faisant partie des 6 modules impliqués dans la mise en place des parois et des régions chromosomiques associées à la composition de la biomasse a mis en évidence 70 gènes en commun et quelques gènes de structure impliqués dans la biosynthèse des parois mais peu de convergence concernant les FT NAC et MYB.Bien que l’optimisation des protocoles de transformation génétique stable n’ait pas abouti, un protocole efficace de transformation transitoire basée sur des protoplastes a été optimisé. Cet outil sera notamment mobilisé pour tester les rôles des FT identifiés dans les réseaux enrichis en gènes de parois.

Gowe is a very popular traditional fermented and non-alcoholic cereal beverage in Benin. The purpose of the present study was to characterize the physical-chemical properties, nutritional and anti-nutrient composition, microbiological safety and mycotoxin occurrence in the various types of gowe. Six to nine samples from four types of technologies were analyzed for the various aspects of quality. Proximate composition, physical properties (particle size, viscosity), nutritional (amino-acid profile) and anti-nutritional (tannin, phytate, and cyanide levels) properties of gowe resulting from the different traditional processes are quite similar except for the physical properties, the differences of which originate from the raw materials and the diverse cooking conditions. The main hazard of traditional gowe are potential mycotoxin contamination, and presence of cyanogenic compounds, which are linked to raw material contamination and the malting step, and occurrence of E. coli and Enterobacteriacae (gowe is free from other pathogens), linked to inappropriate handling and to the packaging material. The main defects are low α-amylase activity of malt linked to poor control of the malting process, low content of several essential amino-acids in the raw materials and which is deteriorated by the cooking step. Several potential solutions are discussed for paving the way for upgrading and re-engineering this process.

Mali is a Sahelian country with a large climatic contrast from North to South. The current climatic and production evolutionary study is focused on the six major agro-climatic cereal production zones ranging from Kayes (400 mm) to Sikasso (>1000 mm) of rainfalls. Climatic data are rainfall records, daily maximum and minimum temperatures from 60 years of the six major synoptic weather observation stations. Data were analyzed on comparing average decades of the two normal periods of 30 years (1951-1980) and (1981-2010). Annual agronomic production data for millet, sorghum, maize and rice are derived from Mali's agricultural statistics base from 1984 to 2013. Main climatic results analyses indicate that climate change resulted in a decrease of 100 mm isohyets between the 2 periods of 30 years. The structure of the rainy season was little changed between these two periods since the average start of the season was delayed by 6 days and the average end date of the season became earlier by 4 days. Maximum temperatures increased significantly from + 0.44°C to + 1.53°C and minimum temperatures significantly increased from + 1.05°C to + 1.93°C in varying way depending on the sites. Statistics of major agronomic food crop production in Mali from 1984 to 2013 indicate an average increase of 985 to 4492 thousand tones, or 22% increase per year. There is a positive upward in saw tooth trend in Malian production from 1984 to 2013. This positive trend is the result of a combination of agricultural extension, agronomic research application and the management of small farmer holder in the Sahel. This evolution needs better study for drawing necessary right conclusions.

International audience; One of the most frequently consumed sorghum food in Mali is a thick porridge, known as to. Many grain traits contribute to its firmness and color, which are the most important qualities for consumers. These traits are related to chemical composition, physical properties, but also grain size, shape, glume adherence and color, pericarp thickness, or the presence of a testa. Quantitative trait loci for to consistency, to color, 16 grain traits, as well as day to flowering and grain yield, were investigated in two elite breeding populations, involved in a marker assisted selection program. A total of 51 and 71 QTLs were detected for P114 and P118, respectively. Several QTLs with high R-2 corresponded to major genes segregating in the populations such as the Z gene for pericarp thickness, the B2 and B1 genes for testa presence, the P gene for anthocyanin, and a QTL for flowering time. Many QTLs with moderate effect were detected for grain attributes associated to to quality, without showing antagonism between grain quality and yield. The results of this study will contribute to producing new varieties combining grain productivity and grain quality favorable alleles, through the use of marker assisted selection.

Soil nutrient deficiency and rainfall variability impair the production of sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L). Moench) in Sudano-Sahelian zone. The aim is to study the environmental factors that can determine the effect of fertilizer application on sorghum grain yield and to formulate tailored fertilization strategies according to sorghum varieties (hybrid and open pollinated improved varieties) and environmental context. Field experiments were conducted during the 2015 and 2016 growing seasons in Nioro du Rip and in Sinthiou Mal&egrave, me (Senegal). In a randomized complete block design arranged in a split-plot with four replications, three factors were tested: sorghum genotype (G: Fadda, Faourou, Soumalemba and Soumba with different cycle lengths), environment (E: irrigation and rainfed, different soil types and fertility levels), and fertilization management (M: five different combinations of application dose and application time) including T1 = no fertilizer applied, T2 (recommended practice, 100%) = 150 kg/ha of NPK (15-15-15) at emergence + 50 Kg/ha of urea (46%) at tillering + 50 kg/ha of urea at stem extension, T3 = 50% T2, T4 (100% delay) = 150 kg/ha of NPK +50 kg/ha of urea at stem extension +50 kg/ha of urea at heading, T5 = 50% T4. Results showed that: (i) in most environments, stressed plants under late application treatments (T4 and T5) recovered biomass once the fertilizer was applied (ii), grain yield with T5 was higher than with T4 under well-watered conditions (sufficient and well distributed rainfall and eventual complementary irrigations), (iii) Fadda, a hybrid, responded differently to fertilization than the other varieties only for biomass production, (iv) late fertilizer application treatment (T4) gave higher grain yield than the recommended practice (T2) in the environment with low yield potential, and (v) long cycle duration genotypes benefited better from late fertilization compared to short cycle duration genotypes. This study showed that under Sudano-Sahelian conditions late fertilization of sorghum can be beneficial to grain yield if the rainy season has a slow start, depending on sorghum genotypes (i.e., cycle length), and on the initial N content of the soil.

With its high biomass yield potential and its adaptability to a large spectrum of crop management schemes (dedicated, double cropping), sorghum is a relevant candidate crop for anaerobic digestion. Moreover, the large genotypic variability of its biochemical composition offers opportunities to cultivate specific varieties that fit the expectations of different end-users. Within this context, the need to evaluate the variability of biomethane potential (BMP) among different genotypes cultivated at various geographical sites has become crucial. In this study, four sorghum genotypes were grown at three different sites and harvested at the same maturity stage (dough grain stage). Consistent BMP obtained from different assays enabled genotype comparisons. The methane potentials observed between genotypes and production sites ranged between 200 ± 5 NmLCH4/gTS and 259 ± 12 NmLCH4/gTS. Evaluation of the genotypic and cultivation site effects produced highly significant results, thus accounting for 36 and 34%, respectively, of the phenotypic variability.

International audience; Sweet and biomass sorghum are expected to contribute increasingly to bioenergy production. Better understanding the impacts of the genotypic and environmental variabilities on biomass component traits and their properties is essential to optimize energy yields. This study aimed to evaluate whether traits contributing to stem biomass growth and biochemical composition at different biological scales (co)vary with the genotype and the water status in sorghum. Height genotypes were studied over two years in field conditions in southern France under two water treatments (well watered vs. 25 days' dry down during stem elongation). Main stem internode number, size, (non)structural carbohydrate, and lignin contents were measured at the end of the stress period and/or at final harvest, together with biochemical and histological analyses of the youngest expanded internode. The tallest genotypes showed the highest stem dry weights and lignin contents. Stem (structural) biomass density was positively correlated with lignin content, particularly in internode parenchyma. Stem soluble sugar and lignin contents were inversely proportional across genotypes and water conditions. Genotypes contrasted for drought sensitivity and recovery capacity of stem growth and biochemical composition. The length and cell wall deposition of internodes expanding under water deficit were reduced and did not recover, these responses being weakly correlated. Genotypic variability was pointed out in the growth recovery of internodes expanding under re-watered conditions. According to the observed genotypic variability and the absence of antagonistic correlations between the responses of the different traits to water availability, it is suggested that biomass sorghum varieties optimizing their responses to water availability in terms of growth and cell wall deposition can be developed for different bioenergy targets.

Two experiments were conducted to investigate the use of sorghum, cottonseed meal and millet in broiler diets and their interaction when they are used simultaneously. In Experiment 1, a corn-soybean meal control diet was compared with eight experimental treatments based on low tannin sorghum (S30, S45 and S60), cottonseed meal (CM15, CM40) or both ingredients included in the same diet (S30/CM40, S45/CM25 and S60CM15).
