Charged molecules play essential roles in many natural and artificial functional processes, ranging from photosynthesis to photovoltaics to chemical reactions and more. It is often difficult to identify the optical dynamic properties of relevant redox species because they cannot be easily prepared, their spectra overlap, or they evolve on a femtosecond timescale. Here, we address these challenges by combining spectroelectrochemistry, ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy, and suitable data analysis. We illustrate the method with the various redox species of a cyclophane composed of two perylene bisimide subunits. While singular-value decomposition is a well-established tool in the analysis of time-dependent spectra of a single molecular species, we here use it additionally to separate transient maps of individual redox species. This is relevant because at any specific applied electrochemical potential, several redox species coexist in the ensemble, and our procedure allows disentangling their spectroscopic response. In the second step, global analysis is then employed to retrieve the excited-state lifetimes and decay-associated difference spectra. Adsorbed molecules on a catalyst almost always arrange themselves in a manner that is far from perfectly random, which gives rise to spatial correlations. These correlations are a result of the interactions between the adsorbed species (adspecies) as well as elementary processes such as diffusion and reaction events that shape the adspecies arrangements. Despite their importance, spatial correlations are usually ignored while writing species balance equations for the modeling of heterogeneous catalytic systems. Recently, we have introduced a probabilistic microkinetic modeling (p-MKM) framework that aims at incorporating spatial correlations in the form of a short-ranged order (SRO) parameter into species balance equations. Here, we extend the approach to catalytic systems of higher complexity, namely, longer interactions and multiple species. This is made possible by including multiple pair probabilities in the p-MKM model for the first time. The interplay between different SRO parameters is probed. Among the numerous advantages of the high-power impulse magnetron sputtering (HiPIMS) technique, the most important is the enhanced ionization degree of sputtered species contributing to the film growth. Consequently, the quality of deposited thin films is highly improved. Still, the optimization process is challenging due to the complexity associated with the intricate transport of the sputtered species, ionized or neutrals. The scarce knowledge available on the spatial distribution of these species when operating a HiPIMS discharge makes the quantitative prediction of any deposition feature particularly difficult. In this paper, we discuss the influence of experimentally controllable quantities, such as gas pressure and target current density, on the transport of sputtered titanium in non-reactive (argon) HiPIMS, namely, on the behavior of metal atoms and metal ion fluxes intercepting the substrate. Systematic quantitative measurements were performed in a diameter normal plane on a circular planar target. Hence, the 2D spatial distribution of the ionized flux fraction (IFF) and the total flux of titanium sputtered particles (deposition rate) are evaluated by biasing a quartz crystal microbalance equipped with an electron magnetic filter. Accurate description of electronic excited states of high-spin molecular species is a yet unsolved problem in modern electronic structure theory. A composite computational scheme developed in the present work contributes to solving this task for a challenging case of lanthanide-containing molecules. In the scheme, the highest-spin states whose wavefunctions are dominated by a single Slater determinant are described at the single-reference (SR) CCSD(T) level, whereas the lower-spin states, being inherently multiconfigurational in their nature, are treated with multireference (MR) methods, MRCI and/or CASPT2. An original technique which scales MR results against SR CCSD(T) ones to improve the accuracy in the former is proposed and examined, taking the example of 12 electronic states of gadolinium monoxide, X9Σ−, Y7Σ−, A′9Δ, A1′7Δ, A9Π, A17Π, B9Σ−, B17Σ−, C9Π, C17Π, D9Σ−, and D17Σ−, up to 35 000 cm−1. A multitude of the corresponding Ω (spin-coupled) states was then studied within the state-interacting approach employing the full Breit–Pauli spin–orbit coupling operator with CASSCF-generated ΛS states as a basis. For all ΛS and Ω states, the Gd–O bond lengths, spectroscopic constants ωe, ωexe, αe, and adiabatic excitation energies are obtained. The theoretical predictions are in good agreement with the experimental data, with deviations in excitation energies not exceeding 350 cm−1 (1 kcal/mol). We propose a novel UV/Vis femtosecond spectroscopic technique, two-dimensional fluorescence-excitation (2D-FLEX) spectroscopy, which combines spectral resolution during the excitation process with exclusive monitoring of the excited-state system dynamics at high time and frequency resolution. We discuss the experimental feasibility and realizability of 2D-FLEX, develop the necessary theoretical framework, and demonstrate the high information content of this technique by simulating the 2D-FLEX spectra of a model four-level system and the Fenna–Matthews–Olson antenna complex. We show that the evolution of 2D-FLEX spectra with population time directly monitors energy transfer dynamics and can thus yield direct qualitative insight into the investigated system. This makes 2D-FLEX a highly efficient instrument for real-time monitoring of photophysical processes in polyatomic molecules and molecular aggregates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this analysis, I employ Husserl's three-part description of intentionality to show how a player/play act/play object model for consciousness helps us see play more clearly. I review Suits' logic-based attempts to amend Huizinga's overly inclusive characterization of play. However, I do so on what I see as stronger phenomenological grounds by describing four kinds of experience embedded in Suits' work-play dichotomy. I analyze two species of play-fortified work – namely, work that requires intrinsic enhancement and work that does not. I also describe two species of play – namely, play that is compromised and play that is unfettered. I conclude by summarizing advantages of phenomenological analyses and underlining the important distinctions this philosophic method uncovers within traditional work and play categories. Global increase in aquaculture production has created a need to reduce its environmental impacts. Nutrients could be recycled especially at land-based recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) by cultivating green microalgae in aquaculture effluent. However, microalgae are difficult to harvest. As a multi-trophic solution, mussels could be used in harvesting microalgae. We tested three European freshwater mussels (duck mussel Anodonta anatina, swan mussel A. cygnea, and swollen river mussel Unio tumidus) for filtering two common green microalgae (Monoraphidium griffithii and Selenastrum sp.) grown in RAS effluent. Mussels decreased microalgal concentrations in the tanks 42–83% over three consecutive trials. Algal concentrations at the end of each trial were lowest for both microalgae in tanks containing Anodonta mussels. Clearance rates were higher for Anodonta mussels than for U. tumidus. Mussels biodeposited more microalgae to tank bottoms when M. griffithii was filtered. Ammonium concentration decreased or did not change in tanks with M. griffithii, but increased in tanks containing Selenastrum sp. These results suggest that of the tested species Anodonta mussels and M. griffithii show best potential for RAS effluent bioremediation application. Although molecular tetrahedral Ti-oxo species exhibit unique electronic and photochemical properties due to their discrete energy levels, which are different from those of anatase and rutile, such Ti-oxo species are generally unstable and readily transformed to amorphous/crystalline TiO2 (bulk phases, nanoparticles and clusters) via hydrolysis and condensation. Here, molecular Ti-oxo species were immobilised within mesoporous silica SBA-15 by grafting titanium(IV) oxyacetylacetonate using the surface silanol groups of SBA-15 as a scaffold, followed by chemical etching with dilute hydrochloric acid to form molecular TiO4 species. These Ti species mainly exist as isolated tetrahedrally coordinated structures, as was confirmed by diffuse reflectance UV-vis and Raman spectroscopy. The SBA-15-immobilised molecular TiO4 exhibited higher photocatalytic activity for H2 evolution from an aqueous methanol solution than conventional Ti-incorporated mesoporous silica (Ti-MCM-41) and reference TiO2 (P25). Atomically dispersed cerium species, anchored to high-area alumina by unsaturated penta-coordinated aluminum, strongly interact with atomically dispersed Cu species to provide active centers for water–gas shift reaction (WGSR). The alumina-anchored Ce3+ species stabilize atomically dispersed Cu+ to form Cu+–Ce3+ active complexes and they work synergistically to enhance low-temperature WGSR activity. Anthracnose caused by Colletotrichum spp. is a serious threat to many crops, and C. siamense has become increasingly prevalent worldwide. However, the mycelial growth and virulence of many of these species, especially below 26 °C, has largely remained unknown. Here, mycelial growth of five representative Colletotrichum strains (three C. siamense [Cs], one C. fructicola [Cf] and one C. gloeosporioides s.s. [Cg]) from diseased strawberry was measured at 10, 14, 18, 22 and 26 °C. Their virulence on Fragaria vesca and highly susceptible F. × ananassa cv. Benihoppe was tested at 14 °C and 22 °C. The strains did not differ much in mycelial growth between 10 and 26 °C, although growth of the Cs and Cg strains was somewhat faster than that of Cf. However, the strains varied greatly in their virulence on the two hosts. Strain Cs GQHZJ19, which grew fastest at 22 °C, was also the most virulent on both hosts at 14 °C and 22 °C. But growth rate of Cs was only positively correlated with virulence on susceptible cv. Benihoppe after 3 days at 22 °C. Based on the virulence analysis of the five Colletotrichum strains on hosts that vary in susceptibility at distinct temperatures, host genotype might play a decisive role in disease severity at an early stage, while temperature might influence the host–Colletotrichum spp. interaction at a later stage. More Colletotrichum strains (especially C. siamense) need to be tested to determine the mycelial growth and virulence in a wider temperature range and thus we can effectively manage disease. Anthracnose caused by Colletotrichum species is a serious disease of loquat (Eriobotrya japonica), but the species of Colletotrichum that are associated with the disease in Japan have not been adequately surveyed. In this study, 46 isolates were isolated from diseased leaves and fruits of loquat in Kagawa and Tokushima prefectures in 2017 and 2018. On the basis of morphological features and molecular approaches, seven Colletotrichum species were identified: C. fioriniae, C. nymphaeae, C. karsti, C. aenigma, C. fructicola, C. gloeosporioides s. s., and C. siamense. The most prevalent species was C. karsti (43.5% of total species), followed by C. fioriniae (21.7%) and C. gloeosporioides s. s. (13.0%). All identified species were confirmed to cause loquat anthracnose by fulfilling Koch's postulates. The loquat isolates of C. fioriniae, C. fructicola, and C. siamense also caused symptoms on all tested plants of kiwifruit, satsuma mandarin, persimmon, and peach. Plastomes are used in phylogenetic reconstructions because of their relatively conserved nature. Nonetheless, some limitations arise, particularly at lower taxonomic levels due to reduced interspecific polymorphisms and frequent hybridization events that result in unsolved phylogenies including polytomies and reticulate evolutionary patterns. Next-generation sequencing technologies allow access to genomic data and strongly supported phylogenies, yet biased topologies may be obtained due to insufficient taxon sampling. We analyze the hypothesis that intraspecific plastome diversity reflects biogeographic history and hybridization cycles among taxa. We generated 12 new plastome sequences covering distinct latitudinal locations of all species of subgenus Nothofagus from North Patagonia. Chloroplast genomes were assembled, annotated, and searched for simple sequence repeats (SSRs). Phylogenetic reconstructions included species and sampled locations. The six Nothofagus species analyzed were of similar size and structure; only Nothofagus obliqua of subgenus Lophozonia , used as an outgroup, presented slight differences in size. We detected a variable number of SSRs in distinct species and locations. Phylogenetic analyses of plastomes confirmed that subgenus Nothofagus organizes into two monophyletic clades each consisting of individuals of different species. We detected a geographic structure within subgenus Nothofagus and found evidence of local chloroplast sharing due to past hybridization, followed by adaptive introgression and ecological divergence. These contributions enrich the comprehension of transversal evolutionary mechanisms such as chloroplast capture and its implications for phylogenetic and phylogenomic analyses. The distribution and diversity of insects are crucial conservation issues. The order Trichoptera is comprised of numerous endangered species, but the rarity of some makes it challenging to determine their conservation priority. In recent decades, data based on caddisfly larvae have become more frequent in limnological research in Slovakia. Our research, focusing mainly on adult caddisflies, has led to more reliable and accurate identification of many species that cannot be identified with certainty in the larval stage.We combined several entomological methods, including sweeping, Malaise traps, and UV light attraction, to increase the likelihood of catching rare species. The text lists and discusses the discoveries of caddisfly species that are particularly important for faunistics or biodiversity in Slovakia, as well as in the Central European context. Enoicyla reichenbachii (Kolenati, 1848), Limnephilus incisus Curtis, 1834, Ptilocolepus granulatus (Pictet, 1834) and Oecetis testacea (Curtis, 1834) were recorded for the first time in Slovakia. The rare species Hagenella clathrata (Kolenati, 1848) and Adicella balcanica Botosaneanu and Novák, 1965, previously found in Slovakia, were also recorded. Additionally, a new locality of Adicella syriaca Ulmer, 1907 indicates a further northward shift of this Mediterranean species. We further discussed the faunistically important records of Beraeamyia hrabei Mayer, 1937, Allotrichia pallicornis (Eaton, 1873), Ceraclea riparia (Albarda, 1874), Grammotaulius nitidus (Müller, 1764) and Limnephilus fuscicornis Rambur, 1842 from Slovakia. The occurrence of Vibrio cholerae, Vibrio metschnikovii and Vibrio fluvialis, important aquatic human pathogens of genus Vibrio, were determined in the surface water of the Danube River in Bratislava. The isolates were identified by biochemical tests. Biochemical characteristics of environmental isolates could be slightly different from reference and clinical strains which is reflected in dissimilarity rate, which was in our case not sufficient. A molecular method called amplified ribosomal DNA restriction analysis was used for confirmation of phenotypic identification. The species identity of 19 out of 22 isolates was confirmed, in the case of 3 misidentified ones, the identity of the genus did not change. The identity of all V. cholerae isolates was confirmed by PCR using species-specific gene called ompW. Also, main virulence factors of these isolates were determined. None of the isolates possessed all three virulence factors necessary for the induction of cholera. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Xiphocentronidae comprises eight genera found across tropical regions. In Brazil, two genera are present: Xiphocentron Brauer, 1870 and Machairocentron Schmid, 1982. Xiphocentron is further divided into five subgenera: Xiphocentron (Antillotrichia) Banks, 1941, X. (Glyphocentron) Schmid, 1982, X. (Rhamphocentron) Schmid, 1982, X. (Sphagocentron) Schmid, 1982, and X. (Xiphocentron). Xiphocentron (Antillotrichia) is the most species-rich subgenus and the only one occurring in South America. In Brazil, there are 18 species of X. (Antillotrichia), mainly distributed in the Atlantic Forest, with one species recorded in the Brazilian Amazon. Machairocentron, another Neotropical genus, comprises nine species, but only one species is known in Brazil. Recent research in the Brazilian Amazon led to the discovery of three new species of Xiphocentron: Xiphocentron (Antillotrichia) moasp. n., Xiphocentron tapajossp. n., and Xiphocentron (Antillotrichia) xingusp. n. This study describes and illustrates these species, focusing on adult males, and highlighting the distinctive morphology of segment IX and inferior appendages. New distribution records are provided for X. (Antillotrichia) sclerothrix Pes & Hamada, 2013 and M. falciforme Pes & Hamada, 2013. Additionally, M. amahuaca Vilarino, Salles & Bispo, 2023 and X. Stick insects (Phasmatodea) in general are remarkable for presenting striking camouflage-related adaptations. Even so, a considerable number of species are colorful and present other defense mechanisms, such as the New World lineage Pseudophasmatidae. Within this family, Urucumania currently comprises two described species occurring in Brazil, Bolivia and Paraguay, both of which have small scale-like wings. Urucumania is currently placed in Anisomorphini. However, two similar species under Pseudophasma present remarkable similarities with Urucumania species. These two species, Pseudophasma nigrovittatum and Pseudophasma dentata, are the only Pseudophasma presenting scale-like wings. Both inhabit Brazil, are known from a single sex and present a generally similar coloration pattern contrasting to that of Urucumania. Aiming to resolve whether these and other similar specimens represent distinct species, and if they belong to Urucumania rather than to Pseudophasma, we conducted a careful analysis of the external morphology of both sexes, eggs and the male genitalia. We transfer both scale-like winged Pseudophasma to Urucumania, redescribing them based on both sexes showing that the two described species are in fact distinct, and furthermore present 13 new species of Urucumania from Brazil and Bolivia: Urucumania pirulaisp. n., U. varellaisp. n., U. guadanucciisp. n., U. atilaisp. n., U. intervalicasp. n., U. brasilsp. n., U. tapirapesp. n., U. rasocatarinensissp. n., U. dilatatasp. n., U. sertanejasp. n., U. albopunctatasp. n., U. oriomadeirensissp. n. and U. candangasp. n. Soybean is an important protein and oil crop around the world, widely cultivated in Heilongjiang province, China. In the summer of 2021, soybean root rot samples were collected from farms in multiple regions of Heilongjiang province to isolate pathogens. Twenty‐seven fungal isolates with similar morphology were found, causing soybean root discolouration and blackness leading to root rot, but which had relatively mild pathogenicity, with an average disease index of 13.69–32.25. Morphological features and multilocus phylogenetic analyses divided these isolates into four species: Clonostachys rosea (48.2%), C. rosea f. sp. rosea (14.8%), C. chloroleuca (29.6%) and Clonostachys sp. (7.4%). Co‐inoculation of these four species with two important pathogenic Fusarium species that can cause soybean root rot, F. annulatum and Fusarium sp. 1 in the Fusarium oxysporum species complex (FOSC), showed that C. rosea and Clonostachys sp. significantly reduced the pathogenicity of F. annulatum to soybean root, while C. rosea f. sp. rosea and C. chloroleuca slightly increased the pathogenicity of F. annulatum. C. rosea, Clonostachys sp., C. chloroleuca and C. rosea f. sp. rosea slightly reduced the pathogenicity of Fusarium sp. 1 in the FOSC. Our research is the first to report Clonostachys sp., C. chloroleuca and C. rosea f. sp. rosea causing soybean root rot in Heilongjiang province, China, and that these four Clonostachys species can affect the pathogenicity of Fusarium species, alleviating or aggravating soybean root rot. True mangroves and mangrove associates are salt‐tolerant trees and shrubs that serve a critical role in preserving the ecological balance of tropical and subtropical estuarine environments. However, they are not immune to the damage caused by fungal pathogens. In this study, leaves exhibiting leaf spot symptoms were gathered from mangrove estuary and forests in Prachuap Khiri Khan, Thailand. Through morphological and multilocus phylogenetic analyses (LSU, ITS, RPB2 and TUB2) along with genealogical concordance phylogenetic species recognition, we identified Allophoma acanthi sp. nov. from Acanthus ilicifolius. Additionally, A. minor was identified as the causative agent of leaf spots in true mangrove and mangrove associate species, namely, Acanthus ilicifolius, Combretum sp., Hibiscus tiliaceus, Intsia bijuga, Lumnitzera racemosa and Sonneratia alba. We also provide evidence to support the synonymization of A. thunbergiae with A. minor. All eight isolates of Allophoma species in this study demonstrated pathogenicity to their original hosts with varied virulence, confirming Koch's postulates. Depredation (the partial or complete removal of a hooked species by a non‐target species) is a human–wildlife conflict as old as humans and the sea. In some ways, depredation is no different today than it was a century ago. But in many ways, this conflict has become more complicated. Following three decades of successful management, some US shark populations have begun to rebuild. However, many anglers attribute perceived increases in shark depredation to management measures, claiming they have led to 'overpopulation' of sharks and/or learned behaviour by sharks. We investigated whether these factors could explain the reported increases in depredation. Based on fishery‐independent surveys, neither shark population increases nor learned behaviour by sharks is evident. However, increases in angler effort provide an alternative explanation that is not often considered. While far from a smoking gun, at least four themes emerge from this thought exercise. First, it is important to understand historical predator baselines. Second, it is important to acknowledge lifting baselines, that is, instances where previously depleted populations are recovering. Third, it is important to remember that there are many instances when stakeholder observations were initially misaligned with traditional scientific observations but were ultimately recognized as pivotal for filling data gaps. Finally, and perhaps most important, is the acknowledgement that perceived conflict is as potent as real conflict. Arguably, it may not matter if depredation has increased or decreased; the overwhelming perception from stakeholders is an increase in depredation, and this is the perceived (or real) conflict that must be addressed. Experiments are routinely conducted to evaluate the toxicity of water effluents or chemicals. In a Ceriodaphnia dubia reproduction test, organisms are exposed to varying concentration levels of the toxicant or other adverse treatment and the number of young produced after a given experiment period are recorded. To analyze the test outcomes, mean reproduction is modeled as a function of the concentration, and the estimated concentrations associated with specified levels of adverse effect often are used in risk management. While aquatic toxicity analyses often focus on outcomes from the current test, laboratories commonly have a history of conducting such tests using the same species, following a similar experimental protocol. So it seems reasonable to assume that the same underlying biological process generates the historical and current tests. In the present study, we propose using a calibrated power prior approach to incorporate historical control outcomes as prior input, and compare the behavior of the method when different congruence measures are used to determine the amount of historical input that will be incorporated. Simulation results show that three of the congruence measures can improve precision and reduce bias of the potency estimates.Supplementary material to this paper is provided online. Pimelodidae is a family of large‐sized catfishes consisting of 116 valid species divided into 30 genera distributed in the Neotropical region. Despite recent advancements in understanding the pimelodid phylogeny, several internal relationships have remained unclear and have received limited support from various phylogenetic analyses. We provide a new genomic dataset comprising 55 species representing 25 genera of Pimelodidae and related siluriform families Aspredinidae, Auchenipteridae, Cetopsidae, Doradidae, Diplomystidae, Heptapteridae, Loricariidae, and Pseudopimelodidae. Our phylogenetic analyses support the monophyly of Pimelodidae, as well as the existence of four major lineages: the Steindachneridion clade, the Leiarius + Phractocephalus clade, and two major subclades herein classified as Sorubiminae and Pimelodinae. Our topology resolves Phractocephalus sister to Leiarius differing from previous phylogenies. In Sorubiminae, Zungaro is sister to two large clades: one with Sorubim, Sorubimichthys, and Pseudoplatystoma, and the other with Hemisorubim, Platysilurus, Platystomatichthys, Brachyplatystoma, and Hypophthalmus. In Pimelodinae, we found the Pimelodus ornatus clade, the calophysines, and the clade with Exallodontus, Propimelodus, and Pimelodus altissimus closer to the Pimelodus group. Parapimelodus, Duopalatinus, Iheringichthys, and Bergiaria are included within the Pimelodus group. The Pimelodus group contains four main components: (1) Duopalatinus peruanus, (2) the trans‐Andean Pimelodus grosskopfii; (3) Pimelodus maculatus clade with species from the Brazilian Shield in southeastern Brazil; and (4) Pimelodus blochii clade composed by species from the Amazon, Orinoco, Paraná‐Paraguay, Parnaíba, São Francisco and coastal drainages of the Guiana Shield. The P. maculatus clade is composed by phenotypically diverse species, and the P. blochii clade houses species morphologically similar that appear nested within the widely distributed P. blochii. The terrestrial isopod genus Ligidium includes 58 species from Europe, Asia, and North America. In Eastern North America four species are recognized: L. floridanum and L. mucronatum, known just from their type localities in Florida and Louisiana respectively, L. blueridgensis, endemic to the southern Appalachians, and L. elrodii, widespread from Georgia to Ontario. The genus shows a marked morphological conservatism, and species are differentiated mostly by small morphological differences; it is not always easy to determine if such variability represents inter‐ or intraspecific variation. Here, we explore the diversity of Ligidium from the southern Appalachian Mountains, exploring the congruence of morphologically defined groups with multilocus phylogenetic reconstructions and molecular species delimitation methods. We have studied a total of 130 specimens from 37 localities, mostly from the southern Appalachians, and analysed mtDNA (Cox1) and nuclear (28S, NaK) sequences. Morphologically, we recognized eight morphotypes, most of them assignable to current concepts of L. elrodii and L. blueridgensis. Phylogenetic analyses supported the evolutionary independence of all morphotypes, and suggest the existence of 8–9 species, including limited cryptic diversity. Single‐locus delimitation analyses based on mtDNA data suggest the existence of a much higher number of species than the multilocus analyses. The estimated age of the ancestors of sampled lineages indicates a long presence of the genus in eastern North America and old speciation events through the Miocene. Our results indicate a higher diversity than previously thought among the Ligidium populations present in the southern Appalachian Mountains, with several species to be described. Jumping spiders (Salticidae) are a diverse group of non‐web‐building predators and the most species‐rich spider family. The Salticidae Tribe Nannenini consists of a small group of Oriental jumping spiders that are very poorly known. The use of explicit phylogenetic analyses to establish its affinities has so far remained limited. The Nannenini genus Epidelaxia has a peculiar morphology, making its systematic position uncertain. In this study, we present a comprehensive dataset combining molecular and morphological data for Nannenini, including exemplars from all genera. This dataset comprises DNA sequences of approximately 2400 bp, including nuclear genes (18S, 28S and H3) and the mitochondrial gene CO1, sequenced for 40 taxa (20 ingroups and 20 outgroups), along with 61 morphological characters. Notably, both DNA sequences and morphological traits were analysed separately and concurrently for the first time. The Nannenini clade is recovered with high support. Further, Epidelaxia is monophyletic and sister to Tubalaxia gen. n. This is the first hypothesis on the internal phylogenetic structure of Epidelaxia and its placement within the Tribe Nannenini. A new genus Tubalaxia gen. n. and the following new species are described: E. bharathi sp. n., E. somasundaram sp. n., T. castanea sp. n., T. aurea sp. n. The following new combination is proposed: Tubalaxia minuta (Prószyński, 1992) comb. n. Epidelaxia albostellata, E. albocruciata and E. obscura are redescribed. We continue our study on the global dynamics of a non- local reaction-diffusion-advection system modeling the population dynamics of two competing phytoplankton species in a eutrophic environment, where the species depend solely on light for their metabolism. In our previous works, we proved that system (1.1) is a strongly monotone dynamical system with respect to a non-standard cone, and some competitive exclusion results were obtained. In this paper, we aim to demonstrate the existence of coexistence steady state as well as competitive exclusion. A full-life cycle approach is a tenet of migratory species conservation, yet the degree to which this is achieved remains largely unassessed. This knowledge gap can be addressed using the concept of social-ecological fit, understood as the match between governance and ecological dimensions. Here, we assess the social-ecological fit for conserving migratory shorebirds in the Asia–Pacific, focusing on habitat loss and hunting. We identify the governance architectures for addressing these two threats and then assess the coordinating capacity of each architecture, measure institutional coverage for each species across their range, and determine the degree of institutional connectivity along their migratory network. We find that social-ecological fit is higher for the governance of habitat designation than for hunting management, with implications for governance practice. Analyses of social-ecological fit thus provide critical insights on the potential effectiveness of governance and therefore are a useful first step for migratory species conservation. We assessed social preferences toward vertebrates, invertebrates, and plants in a biodiversity hotspot in Chile. We asked respondents (n = 662) to rank species based on their preferences and to select one subset to protect and another subset to remove. We identified four species clusters based on preferences: charismatic animals, plants, less popular animals, and animals that cause phobia/rejection. Preferences to protect were higher in the charismatic animal cluster, whereas preferences to remove were concentrated in the phobic cluster. Stakeholders with environmental occupations selected species to protect from the "less popular animals" and "animals causing phobia" clusters more often than other stakeholders, whereas society in general tended to select species from the "charismatic animals" cluster. Our results suggest that factors different from conservation priorities – like charisma – guide social preferences for biodiversity, and this needs to be considered when planning management actions. The Calotes genus presents a challenge due to the complexity of its species. However, research on the cryptic species complex within the Indonesian Calotes genus is still lacking. This study aims to determine the extent of genetic relationships and assess the potential existence of a species complex within the Indonesian genus Calotes (Daudin, 1802) (Squamata, Agamidae) using the partial Cytochrome c Oxidase Subunit 1 (COI) gene sequence as a molecular marker. Samples of the Indonesian Calotes genus in this study were collected from South Lampung (Lampung), Bogor (West Java), and Langkat (North Sumatra). By aligning 582 bp sequence similarities with reference sequences in GenBank, we confirmed that seven out of eight samples analyzed belonged to Calotes vultuosus, while one sample was identified as Calotes versicolor. The identity values ranged from 96 to 100%. The C. vultuosus samples in this study displayed lower genetic distances, ranging from 0 to 3%, with the reference C. vultuosus sequence from Indonesia compared to the reference sequence from India, which ranged from 6 to 9%. Phylogenetic tree reconstruction, utilizing both maximum likelihood with IQ-Tree and Bayesian Inference with BEAST methods, further supports these findings. It reveals distinct groupings between C. vultuosus samples from Indonesia and India. These results suggest the potential occurrence of a species complex within the Indonesian genus Calotes. Furthermore, the inclusion of eight COI gene sequences from two Calotes species in the GenBank database has the potential to confirm the existence of previously undocumented species in Indonesia. The Jungle Game is used in population dynamics to describe cyclic competition among species that interact via a food chain. The dynamics of the Jungle Game supports a heteroclinic network whose cycles represent coexisting species. The stability of all heteroclinic cycles in the network for the Jungle Game with four species determines that only three species coexist in the long-run, interacting under cyclic dominance as a Rock–Paper–Scissors Game. This is in stark contrast with other interactions involving four species, such as cyclic interaction and intraguild predation. Recent investigations have revealed the coordination and trade-offs between above- and belowground traits in structuring functional strategies of plant communities, but none of these have addressed ferns, a diverse plant lineage in tropical forests. We investigated terrestrial ferns from the perspective of how below- and aboveground traits are coordinated with functional responses to forest edges, which represent a significant part of the world's forest cover. Specifically, we examined differences in functional strategies between forest edges and forest interior as well as traits associated with species dominance. Fern richness and abundance were sampled in 24 edge plots and 44 interior plots within the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. We obtained data for five leaf traits and three rhizome traits. Ferns did not express any functional coordination between above- and belowground traits. At the edge, ferns did not display functional homogenization. In both the interior and at the edge, ferns exhibited multiple trait covariations across a broad spectrum of plant sizes and leaf numbers, associated with rhizome type and the presence of leaf trichomes and stolons. There were no cohesive functional groups of generalists or of exclusive species of forest edges and the forest interior. Fern species dominance was related to the species-specific number of leaves and the presence of stolons. We conclude that below- and aboveground traits did neither respond in conjunction nor as a functional response to edge effects. The phylum Nematoda remains very poorly sampled for mtDNA, with a strong bias toward parasitic, economically important or model species of the Chromadoria lineage. Most chromadorian mitogenomes share a specific order of genes encoded on one mtDNA strand. However, the few sequenced representatives of the Dorylaimia lineage exhibit a variable order of mtDNA genes encoded on both strands. While the ancestral arrangement of nematode mitogenome remains undefined, no evidence has been reported for Enoplia, the phylum's third early divergent major lineage. We describe the first mitogenome of an enoplian nematode, Campydora demonstrans, and contend that the complete 37‐gene repertoire and both‐strand gene encoding are ancestral states preserved in Enoplia and Dorylaimia versus the derived mitogenome arrangement in some Chromadoria. The C. demonstrans mitogenome is 17,018 bp in size and contains a noncoding perfect inverted repeat with 2013 bp‐long arms, subdividing the mitogenome into two coding regions. This mtDNA arrangement is very rare among animals and instead resembles that of chloroplast genomes in land plants. Our report broadens mtDNA taxonomic sampling of the phylum Nematoda and adds support to the applicability of cox1 gene as a phylogenetic marker for establishing nematode relationships within higher taxa. In this paper, I introduce the notion of 'philosophy moves': prominent tropes featured in contemporary academic philosophy. Moves are more than patterns—they are tools for advancing and enriching philosophical debates. By recognizing these patterns in the philosophical literature, we collect an ensemble of moves for deployment in novel contexts, each with the potential to forge new paths of philosophical investigation through a given topic. The moves featured in this paper are constructive and progressive, with the potential to push past stalemates and open a wider conceptual landscape. Following a presentation of five exemplars taken from the philosophy of biology literature, I show how different moves could be made within a current interdisciplinary debate. The sterile insect technique is one of the effective biological measures for mosquitoes control. In this paper, a model of competition between two mosquito species with sterile mosquitoes is presented. We first formulated a simple competitive model as our baseline model. Then, we formulated an interactive model with wild and sterile mosquitoes of one type of species, followed by the introduction of one type of sterile mosquitoes into the baseline competitive model. We have considered the case in which the amount of sterile mosquitoes released per unit time is constant. We have investigated the existence and stability of equilibria of the model and derived some release thresholds, based on which, we have investigated the impact of releasing sterile mosquitoes on the dynamics of competition between different species of mosquitoes. Foundation species support highly productive and valuable ecosystems, but anthropogenic disturbances and environmental changes are increasingly causing foundation species shifts, where one foundation species replaces another. The consequences of foundation shifts are not well understood, as there is limited research on the equivalency of different foundation species and the functions they support. Here, we provide insight into community-level consequences of foundation shifts in the Gulf of Mexico, where the typical marsh foundation species (Spartina alterniflora) is being replaced with a mangrove foundation species (Avicennia germinans), forcing marsh fauna to rely on Avicennia for foundational support. We evaluated the interactions of two common and ecologically valuable basal consumers, fiddler crabs (Uca spp.) and marsh periwinkle snails (Littoraria irrorata), with both foundation species across sites with different levels of mangrove encroachment. By investigating both physical support, measured as habitat association and co-occurrence, and trophic support, as basal resource diet contributions, we found that Avicennia can physically replace Spartina for some consumers, but is not providing equivalent trophic support. Uca and Littoraria commonly occupy encroached sites and associate with mangroves but incorporate almost no mangrove plant matter into their diets. The ultimate consequences of a foundation shift in the case of mangrove encroachment may include shifting energy flows and resource use and decreased populations of basal consumers. Looking at interactions with foundation species from multiple perspectives is necessary to obtain a complete picture of the effects that foundational shifts are having, especially as such shifts are becoming increasingly common. Main conclusions: In contrast to Neltuma species, S. tamarugo exhibited higher stress tolerance, maintaining photosynthetic performance through enhanced gene expression and metabolites. Differentially accumulated metabolites include chlorophyll and carotenoids and accumulation of non-nitrogen osmoprotectants. Plant species have developed different adaptive strategies to live under extreme environmental conditions. Hypothetically, extremophyte species present a unique configuration of physiological functions that prioritize stress-tolerance mechanisms while carefully managing resource allocation for photosynthesis. This could be particularly challenging under a multi-stress environment, where the synthesis of multiple and sequential molecular mechanisms is induced. We explored this hypothesis in three phylogenetically related woody species co-occurring in the Atacama Desert, Strombocarpa tamarugo, Neltuma alba, and Neltuma chilensis, by analyzing their leaf dehydration and freezing tolerance and by characterizing their photosynthetic performance under natural growth conditions. Besides, the transcriptomic profiling, biochemical analyses of leaf pigments, and metabolite analysis by untargeted metabolomics were conducted to study gene expression and metabolomic landscape within this challenging multi-stress environment. S. tamarugo showed a higher photosynthetic capacity and leaf stress tolerance than the other species. In this species, a multifactorial response was observed, which involves high photochemical activity associated with a higher content of chlorophylls and β-carotene. The oxidative damage of the photosynthetic apparatus is probably attenuated by the synthesis of complex antioxidant molecules in the three species, but S. tamarugo showed the highest antioxidant capacity. Comparative transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses among the species showed the differential expression of genes involved in the biosynthetic pathways of key stress-related metabolites. Moreover, the synthesis of non-nitrogen osmoprotectant molecules, such as ciceritol and mannitol in S. tamarugo, would allow the nitrogen allocation to support its high photosynthetic capacity without compromising leaf dehydration tolerance and freezing stress avoidance. Ichthyoplankton monitoring is crucial for stock assessments, offering insights into spawning grounds, stock size, seasons, recruitment, and changes in regional ichthyofauna. This study evaluates the efficiency of multi-marker DNA metabarcoding using mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI), 12S rRNA and 16S rRNA gene markers, in comparison to morphology-based methods for fish species identification in ichthyoplankton samples. Two transects with four coastal distance categories were sampled along the southern coast of Portugal, being each sample divided for molecular and morphological analyses. A total of 76 fish species were identified by both approaches, with DNA metabarcoding overperforming morphology—75 versus 11 species-level identifications. Linking species-level DNA identifications with higher taxonomic morphological identifications resolved several uncertainties associated with traditional methods. Multi-marker DNA metabarcoding improved fish species detection by 20–36% compared to using a single marker/amplicon, and identified 38 species in common, reinforcing the validity of our results. PERMANOVA analysis revealed significant differences in species communities based on the primer set employed, transect location, and distance from the coast. Our findings underscore the potential of DNA metabarcoding to assess ichthyoplankton diversity and suggest that its integration into routine surveys could enhance the accuracy and comprehensiveness of fish stock assessments. The analysis of the interaction between main bionts (mycobiont and photobiont) in the lichen symbiosis delivers substantial information about their preferences in the selection of symbiotic partners, and their ecological preferences. The selectivity in the Parmelia genus has been defined as strong so far. However, data on this lichen genus, which includes several widely distributed species, are biogeographically limited. Therefore, using specialization indicators and extended sampling, in this study, we estimated the interactions between the main bionts of selected Parmelia spp., using two levels of estimation (species/OTU and haplotype). A comparison of mycobiont-photobiont interactions at different levels showed that considering only mycobiont species and Trebouxia OTUs, greater specialization is found, while Parmelia species studied in this work present a more generalistic strategy in photobiont choice when haplotypes are considered. Despite the uneven sampling of Parmelia species, the interpretation of specialization within species and individuals of the genus leads to a more precise and accurate interpretation of their adaptation strategies. Furthermore, the data from P. sulcata indicate the existence of a different pool of compatible haplotypes in some geographical regions compared to neighboring areas. Magnaporthiopsis maydis is a maize pathogen that causes severe damage to commercial corn fields in the late growth stages. Late wilt disease (LWD) has spread since its discovery in the 1960s in Egypt and is now reported in about 10 countries. The pathogen has a hidden endophytic lifecycle in resistant corn plants and secondary hosts such as green foxtail, watermelon lupin and cotton. At the same time, it could be an opportunist and hinder the host development under the right conditions. This study uncovered M. maydis interactions with newly identified maize endophytes. To this end, six fungi were isolated from the seeds of three sweet corn cultivars having varying susceptibility to LWD. These isolates were identified using colony morphology and microscopic characterization, universal internal transcribed spacer (ITS) molecular targeting and phylogenetic analysis. Most of them belonged to pathogenic species. Compared to three previously identified bioprotective microorganisms, the new species were tested for their ability to secrete metabolites that repress M. maydis in vitro and to antagonize it in a solid media confront test and a seedlings pathogenicity assay. The opportunistic fungal species Aspergillus flavus (ME1), Aspergillus terreus (PE3) and the reference biocontrol bacteria Bacillus subtilis (R2) achieved the highest M. maydis inhibition degree in the plates tests (74-100% inhibition). The seedlings' pathogenicity assay that predicts the seeds' microflora resistance to M. maydis highlighted the bio-shielding potential of most species (23% or more epicotyl elongation over the infected control). Fusarium sp. (ME2) was the leading species in this measure (43% enhancement), and B. subtilis gave the best protection in terms of seeds' germination (50%) and sprouts' biomass (34%). The results of this study could enhance our understanding of the pathobiome's role in the context of LWD and represent a first step in using the seeds' natural protective microflora to develop novel management strategies. Based on a collection housed at LWG (Herbarium of CSIR–National Botanical Research Institute, Lucknow, India), collected by Singh et al. on 25 June 2017 from Nagaland state of India, Pouzolzia friisii A.Gupta & V.Wagh sp. nov. (Urticaceae) is described and illustrated. The species resembles Pouzolzia sanguinea var. fulgens, P. niveotomentossa and P. australis in its serrated leaf margins and the indumentum on the abaxial leaf surface however, P. friisii is quite distinct in its grayish or pale yellowish indumentum, 4‐merous sessile male flowers and densely pubescent fruiting perianths without wings and ribs. Understanding how sublethal impacts of toxicants affect population‐relevant outcomes for organisms is challenging. We tested the hypotheses that the well‐known sublethal impacts of methylmercury (MeHg) and a polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB126) would have meaningful impacts on cohort growth and survival in yellow perch (Perca flavescens) and Atlantic killifish (Fundulus heteroclitus) populations, that inclusion of model uncertainty is important for understanding the sublethal impacts of toxicants, and that a model organism (zebrafish Danio rerio) is an appropriate substitute for ecologically relevant species (yellow perch, killifish). Our simulations showed that MeHg did not have meaningful impacts on growth or survival in a simulated environment except to increase survival and growth in low mercury exposures in yellow perch and killifish. For PCB126, the high level of exposure resulted in lower survival for killifish only. Uncertainty analyses increased the variability and lowered average survival estimates across all species and toxicants, providing a more conservative estimate of risk. We demonstrate that using a model organism instead of the species of interest does not necessarily give the same results, suggesting that using zebrafish as a surrogate for yellow perch and killifish may not be appropriate for predicting contaminant impacts on larval cohort growth and survival in ecologically relevant species. Our analysis also reinforces the notion that uncertainty analyses are necessary in any modeling assessment of the impacts of toxicants on a population because it provides a more conservative, and arguably realistic, estimate of impact. ABSTRACT In many species, individuals of the same sex exhibit different mating behaviours, a phenomenon known as alternative mating tactics (AMTs). These AMTs may occur in species in which morphology prevents individuals from adopting different tactics (fixed expression of AMTs) as well as in species in which individuals can alternate between them (flexible expression of AMTs). Regardless of the way different mating tactics are expressed, a key point to understanding the selective forces driving AMT evolution relies on identifying differences in the reproductive success between tactics. Empirical studies often indicate that individuals adopting the main tactic (generally the more aggressive) have higher mating success than those adopting the secondary tactic. However, while this is expected for species showing flexible expression of AMTs, the same should not hold for species showing fixed expression of AMTs. In species with fixed expression of AMTs, individuals adopting each tactic have morphological specialisations in acquiring mates that may be responsible for eliminating differences in reproductive success between tactics. Despite such expectations, a comprehensive investigation across species regarding differences in the reproductive success of AMTs is lacking. Using a meta‐analytical approach, we investigated if there is a difference in the reproductive success between tactics and whether this difference is related to how these tactics are expressed (fixed or flexible). We focused on males since information on reproductive success for females with AMTs is still scarce. We hypothesised that (i) males adopting the main tactic have higher reproductive success than males adopting the secondary tactic, and (ii) the difference in reproductive success between tactics will be higher in species with flexible rather than fixed expression of AMTs. When all species were pooled, we found that males adopting the main tactic had a similar reproductive success to males adopting the secondary mating tactic. However, this trend changed between species with fixed and flexible expression of AMTs. In species with flexible expression of AMTs, males exhibiting the main tactic have higher mating success than those adopting secondary tactics, while in species with fixed expression of AMTs, males adopting distinct tactics have similar reproductive success. Thus, the widespread assumption that males adopting the main tactic have higher reproductive success than males adopting the secondary tactic may be restricted to species in which individuals can alternate between tactics during their lifespan. However, we found that most data on the reproductive success of males adopting AMTs is restricted to short reproductive windows and may not reflect differences in lifetime reproductive success between tactics. Therefore, we highlight the importance of examining the selective pressures associated with fixed and flexible expression of AMTs on lifetime reproductive success to attain a deeper understanding of AMT evolution. In this study, the semi-discretization technique is employed to establish a discrete representation of a modified Leslie-Gower prey-predator system that includes a Holling II type functional response. The dynamics of this model are then analyzed through the application of center manifold theory and bifurcation theory. We present comprehensive results for the local stability of the fixed points across the entire parameter space. Additionally, we provide sufficient conditions for the occurrence of flip bifurcation and Neimark-Sacker bifurcation. Besides, the system has experienced a flip bifurcation to chaos controlled using the method of chaos control, viz., state feedback method, pole placement technique, and hybrid control strategy. Furthermore, we provide specific conditions to ensure that bifurcation and chaos can be stabilized. Here, we have successfully achieved the addition of difluoroacetate radicals to 2‐aryl‐3H‐indol‐3‐ones, enabling various difluoroalkylations of C2‐tetrasubstituted 2‐aryl indolin‐3‐ones in a highly efficient and economical manner. It is worth mentioning that these difluoroalkylation compounds can be easily transformed into various derivatives under mild reaction conditions. Male ritual combat is an intraspecific agonistic interaction associated with competition for food, mating and territory and has been described for several neotropical snakes. Here, we provide the first record of male-male combat in Spilotes sulphureus in Brazilian Atlantic Forest based on one fortuitous videotaped encounter. Males remained partially coiled in a vertical position during combat and performed various displays (e.g., downward push, tumble, vertical display and orientation, dorsal hyperextension, pinning and lyre-shaped) including some that were also observed during defensive behaviour (e.g., gular inflation, neck S-coil and latero-lateral flattening). Our observations bring new information about the natural history of S. sulphureus and show that this species shares some aspects of male-male combat with other colubrids, including S. pullatus, but a more in-depth study is necessary to understand the reproductive biology of this species. Improving shade tolerance is critical for development of new turfgrass cultivars in the United States. Comparing turfgrass coverage under reduced sun exposure is a popular and effective method for determining shade tolerance, but requires years to evaluate. The objectives were to (i) compare phenotypical differences of experimental genotypes and cultivars of bermudagrass (Cynodon spp.), St. Augustinegrass (Stenotaphrum secundatum), and zoysiagrass (Zoysia spp.) grown under 73% shade and (ii) identify whether genetic improvement for shade adaptation was made in these species. This 3‐year study conducted in Tifton, GA, found phenotypic differences among genotypes within species for turfgrass coverage when exposed to 73% shade. The experimental bermudagrass, 11‐T‐56, possessed the superior combination of high green turfgrass coverage, low canopy height, and season long dark green color under shade. Experimental genotypes in St. Augustinegrass exhibited genetic improvement compared to commercially available cultivars; however, these genotypes should be examined under more intense shade to elicit differences before further selection. Performance of experimental zoysiagrass genotypes from several turfgrass breeding programs did not indicate significant improvement in the shade persistence within Zoysia spp. There appears to be genetic differences in the speed at which newer zoysiagrasses can initially spread by rhizomes and stolons when grown under shade. Further research should be conducted to determine if juvenile growth is an indicator of shade tolerance under natural tree shade or structures. Overall, results indicated that canopy heights cannot be used to directly predict shade tolerance but can be used to identify turfgrasses with reduced mowing frequency requirements. One of our studies on lignicolous aquatic fungi in the Philippines yielded two new records of freshwater Sordariomycetes in the genera Sporoschisma and Trichoderma. The newly collected specimens, UPVMI 24–0003 and UPVMI 24–0004, exhibit morphological similarities to the holotypes of Trichoderma pinicola (SFC 20130926-S233) and Sporoschisma chiangraiense (MFLU 18–1722), respectively. Combined ITS-TEF1-α phylogenetic analysis showed that UPVMI 24–0003 clustered with the ex-type strain of T. pinicola (KACC 48486), and with T. simplex (HMAS 248842) as a sister taxon. The isolate UPVMI 24–0004 grouped with three strains of S. chiangraiense (MFLUCC 18-0703, MFLUCC 18-0336, and GMB0090), with 97% ML and 1.00 BYPP bootstrap supports in the ITS phylogeny. We provide detailed descriptions and illustrations for both T. pinicola and S. chiangraiense, along with a synopsis of morphological characters for freshwater Sporoschisma species. In southern Sweden, there is possibility for growing spruce-birch mixed stands. However, the required knowledge to manage these stands effectively, i.e. optimal thinning strategies, is limited. Thus, we utilized data from young mixed-forest experiments in southern Sweden to simulate different thinning strategies. Moreover, we compared results from the mixed stands to spruce and birch monocultures. The regeneration was characterized by soil scarification, natural regeneration of birch and high-density planting of Norway spruce seedlings. Pre-commercial thinning (PCT) was carried out to create spruce-dominated mixed stands, birch-dominated mixed stands, and spruce and birch monocultures. The first commercial thinning strategy in the mixed stands was to retain the initial mixture proportions until final felling, while the other was thinning from below, which prioritized removal of the smallest trees of either species. At the end of the rotation, similar growth (9.6–10.2 m3 ha−1 yr−1) and better economy (ca. 13–28% more) was observed in spruce-dominated mixed stands compared to spruce monoculture. It was possible with the appropriate thinning strategy to maintain birch proportion in the mixed stand when the initial stand at PCT is birch-dominated.
