In this paper we study a self-consistent Vlasov-Fokker-Planck equations which describes the longitudinal dynamics of an electron bunch in the storage ring of a synchrotron particle accelerator. We show existence and uniqueness of global classical solutions under physical hypotheses on the initial data. The proof relies on a mild formulation of the equation and hypoelliptic regularization estimates. We also address the problem of the long-time behavior of solutions. We prove the existence of steady states, called Haissinski solutions, given implicitly by a nonlinear integral equation. When the beam current (i.e. the nonlinearity) is small enough, we show uniqueness of steady state and local asymptotic nonlinear stability of solutions in appropriate weighted Lebesgue spaces. One of the fundamental processes in nuclear physics is nuclear excitation by electron capture (NEEC). Having been proposed theoretically for almost 50 years, the experimental confirmation of NEEC is still missing, making it imperative to validate this process. In this paper, we propose a new experimental method based on the anti-coincidence principle to search for the long-anticipated NEEC phenomenon, which involve heavy-ion storage rings. Our calculations indicate that the proposed experimental setup, storage ring, have the potential to surmount background noise, particularly Radiative Recombination (RR) and Coulomb Excitation (CE), and offer a high likelihood of discovering the long- awaited NEEC process. In the scope of the latest upgrade of the Swiss Light Source, five hard X‐ray beamlines will be constructed or rebuilt. To use synergies between these beamline projects, a concept is developed here for hard X‐ray beamlines that is tailored to the new storage ring. Herein, this concept is described from the source, via the front end, to the beamline optics. The latter will be outlined in detail, including a new and modular concept for hard X‐ray monochromators, focusing optics and heat‐load management. With a simple, easy‐to‐operate and robust beamline design, the new beamlines will greatly profit from the increased brilliance of the new storage ring. The performance increase is up to four orders of magnitude, while the beamline concept allows for the broad application of experimental techniques, from propagation‐based methods, such as phase‐contrast tomography, to imaging techniques with nanometre resolution. A multi‐objective genetic algorithm (MOGA) is a powerful global optimization tool, but its results are considerably affected by the crossover parameter ηc. Finding an appropriate ηc demands too much computing time because MOGA needs be run several times in order to find a good ηc. In this paper, a self‐adaptive crossover parameter is introduced in a strategy to adopt a new ηc for every generation while running MOGA. This new scheme has also been adopted for a multi‐generation Gaussian process optimization (MGGPO) when producing trial solutions. Compared with the existing MGGPO and MOGA, the MGGPO and MOGA with the new strategy show better performance in nonlinear optimization for the design of low‐emittance storage rings. While the dissociative recombination (DR) of ground-state molecular ions with low-energy free electrons is generally known to be exothermic, it has been predicted to be endothermic for a class of transition-metal oxide ions. To understand this unusual case, the electron recombination of titanium oxide ions (TiO+) with electrons has been experimentally investigated using the Cryogenic Storage Ring. In its low radiation field, the TiO+ ions relax internally to low rotational excitation (≲100 K). Under controlled collision energies down to ∼ 2 meV within the merged electron and ion beam configuration, fragment imaging has been applied to determine the kinetic energy released to Ti and O neutral reaction products. Detailed analysis of the fragment imaging data considering the reactant and product excitation channels reveals an endothermicity for the TiO+ dissociative electron recombination of (+4 ± 10) meV. This result improves the accuracy of the energy balance by a factor of 7 compared to that found indirectly from hitherto known molecular properties. Conversely, the present endothermicity yields improved dissociation energy values for D0(TiO) = (6.824 ± 0.010) eV and D0(TiO+) = (6.832 ± 0.010) eV. All thermochemistry values were compared to new coupled-cluster calculations and found to be in good agreement. Moreover, absolute rate coefficients for the electron recombination of rotationally relaxed ions have been measured, yielding an upper limit of 1 × 10−7 cm3 s−1 for typical conditions of cold astrophysical media. Strong variation of the DR rate with the TiO+ internal excitation is predicted. Furthermore, potential energy curves for TiO+ and TiO have been calculated using a multi-reference configuration interaction method to constrain quantum-dynamical paths driving the observed TiO+ electron recombination. Steady-State Microbunching (SSMB) has been proposed as a concept to generate coherent synchrotron radiation at an electron storage ring. SSMB promises to supply kilowatt level average power radiation in the extreme ultraviolet regime, meeting the power level demands for lithography applications that presently cannot be fulfilled by established accelerator technologies. SSMB is under theoretical and experimental study, building on a proof-of-principle (PoP) experiment at the Metrology Light Source which previously showed the viability of the idea. Here we report experimental findings from systematic studies in the ongoing SSMB PoP experiment, where microbunching is generated from an energy modulation imposed by a laser of wavelength 1064 nm. The results confirm the expected dependence of the microbunching process on modulation amplitude and show that the influence of transverse-longitudinal coupling dynamics is as predicted. This confirmation of key parts of the SSMB theory establishes a solid footing for continuing the proof-of-principle efforts towards the goal of constructing a prototype SSMB light source facility. We have studied the stability of C59 anions as a function of time, from their formation on femtosecond timescales to their stabilization on second timescales and beyond, using a combination of theory and experiments. The C 59 − fragments were produced in collisions between C60 fullerene anions and neutral helium gas at a velocity of 90 km s−1 (corresponding to a collision energy of 166 eV in the center-of-mass frame). The fragments were then stored in a cryogenic ion beam storage ring at the DESIREE facility, where they were followed for up to 1 minute. Classical molecular dynamics simulations were used to determine the reaction cross section and the excitation energy distributions of the products formed in these collisions. We find that about 15% of the C 59 − ions initially stored in the ring are intact after about 100 ms and that this population then remains intact indefinitely. This means that C60 fullerenes exposed to energetic atoms and ions, such as stellar winds and shock waves, will produce stable, highly reactive products, like C59, that are fed into interstellar chemical reaction networks. The infrared beamline at BESSY II storage ring was upgraded recently to extend the capabilities of infrared microscopy. The endstations available at the beamline are now facilitating improved characterization of molecules and materials at different length scales and time resolutions. Here, the current outline of the beamline is reported and an overview of the endstations available is given. In particular, the first results obtained by using a new microscope for nano-spectroscopy that was implemented are presented. The capabilities of the scattering-type near-field optical microscope (s-SNOM) are demonstrated by investigating cellulose microfibrils, representing nanoscopic objects of a hierarchical structure. It is shown that the s-SNOM coupled to the beamline allows imaging to be performed with a spatial resolution of less than 30 nm and infrared spectra to be collected from an effective volume of less than 30 nm x 30 nm x 12 nm. Fourth-generation synchrotron storage rings represent a significant milestone in synchrotron technology, offering outstandingly bright and tightly focused X-ray beams for a wide range of scientific applications. However, due to their inherently tight magnetic lattices, these storage rings have posed critical challenges for accessing lower-energy radiation, such as infrared (IR) and THz. Here the first-ever IR beamline to be installed and to operate at a fourth-generation synchrotron storage ring is introduced. This work encompasses several notable advancements, including a thorough examination of the new IR source at Sirius, a detailed description of the radiation extraction scheme, and the successful validation of our optical concept through both measurements and simulations. This optimal optical setup has enabled us to achieve an exceptionally wide frequency range for our nanospectroscopy experiments. Through the utilization of synchrotron IR nanospectroscopy on biological and hard matter samples, the practicality and effectiveness of this beamline has been successfully demonstrated. The advantages of fourth-generation synchrotron IR sources, which can now operate with unparalleled stability as a result of the stringent requirements for producing low-emittance X-rays, are emphasized. This paper addresses the design of beam position monitor (BPM) devices suitable for fourth-generation diffraction-limited X-ray storage rings. Detailed investigations of the electromagnetic (EM) phenomena occurring inside the component under various working conditions are carried out by considering different BPM EM models defined by their geometry and materials. Moving from a theoretical characterization of the common round geometry, rhomboidal structures are studied through a careful numerical analysis relying on advanced computer-aided tools. Several critical elements, such as wakefields, pick-up signal extraction, and trapped and propagating modes, are explored from the simulation point of view and from the experimental one, by deploying a manufactured microwave test bench, which is employed to measure the radio frequency behavior of a BPM prototype built at Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste. The aim of the proposed study is to identify a satisfactory tradeoff between achievable performance and practical realizability for BPM devices operating in last-generation light sources. In the last decade nuclear reaction measurements using heavy ion storage rings became an important tool for nuclear astrophysics studies. The new CRYRING Array for Reaction MEasurements (CARME), recently commissioned at the low energy CRYRING@ESR storage ring (GSI/FAIR), is designed to take this novel approach one step further and perform direct nuclear reaction measurements at stellar energies, as well as indirect studies of nuclear properties of interest for nuclear astrophysics. CRYRING is unique worldwide in being able to store high quality, isotopically pure, radioactive beams produced in-flight at the low energies required for nuclear astrophysics. This paper describes the first in-beam reaction measurement with CARME at CRYRING, the first beam on (conventional) target measurement for FAIR Phase-0, and the data analysis approach required by this unprecedented, unique experimental approach. Building reliable fast orbit feedback (FOFB) systems to offer high stability of the beam orbit becomes more challenging for the diffraction-limited storage ring due to the smaller beam size. The beam position measurement and control (BPMC) processor has been developed to streamline the FOFB system architecture by integrating BPM (Beam Position Monitor) electronics and an orbit feedback controller. This paper designs a hierarchical dual-ring network topology based on BPMC processors using parameters derived from the storage ring of the Hefei Advanced Light Facility. To reduce latency and prevent data transmission collisions, we propose a multi-forwarding communication scheme and a communication controller design in a field-programmable gate array. Experimental results verify that this topology operates reliably with the multi-forwarding scheme, providing an approximate communication latency as low as 17.336 μs to support the 30 kHz orbit feedback update rate. Spontaneous and photo-induced decay processes of HfF5− and WF5− molecular anions were investigated in the Double ElectroStatic Ion Ring ExpEriment (DESIREE). The observation of these reactions over long time scales (several tens of ms) was possible due to the cryogenic temperatures (13 K) and the extremely low residual gas pressure (∼10−14 mbar) of DESIREE. For photo-induced reactions, laser wavelengths in the range 240 to 450 nm were employed. Both anion species were found to undergo spontaneous decay via electron detachment or fragmentation. After some ms, radiative cooling processes were observed to lower the probability for further decay through these processes. Photo-induced reactions indicate the existence of an energy threshold for WF5− anions at about 3.5 eV, above which the neutralization yield increases strongly. By contrast, HfF5− ions exhibit essentially no enhanced production of neutrals upon photon interaction, even for the highest photon energy used in this experiment (∼5.2 eV). This suppression will be highly beneficial for the efficient detection, in accelerator mass spectrometry, of the extremely rare isotope 182Hf using the 182HfF5− anion while effectively reducing the interfering stable isobar 182W in the analyte ion 182WF5−. The radionuclide 182Hf is of great relevance in astrophysical environments as it constitutes a potential candidate to study the events of nucleosynthesis that may have taken place in the vicinity of the solar system several million years ago. The unimolecular dissociation and infrared radiative cooling rates of cationic 1-hydroxypyrene (OHPyr+, C16H10O+) and 1-bromopyrene (BrPyr+, C16H9Br+) are measured using a cryogenic electrostatic ion beam storage ring. A novel numerical approach is developed to analyze the time dependence of the dissociation rate and to determine the absolute scaling of the radiative cooling rate coefficient. The model results show that radiative cooling competes with dissociation below the critical total vibrational energies Ec = 5.39(1) eV for OHPyr+ and 5.90(1) eV for BrPyr+. These critical energies and implications for radiative cooling dynamics are important for astrochemical models concerned with energy dissipation and molecular lifecycles. As a representative of the fourth-generation light sources, the High Energy Photon Source (HEPS) in Beijing, China, utilizes a multi-bend achromat lattice to obtain an approximately 100 times emittance reduction compared with thirdgeneration light sources. New technologies bring new challenges to operate the storage ring. In order to meet the beam commissioning requirements of HEPS, a new framework for the development of high-level applications (HLAs) has been created. The key part of the new framework is a dual-layer physical module to facilitate the seamless fusion of physical simulation models with the real machine, allowing for fast switching between different simulation models to accommodate the various simulation scenarios. As a framework designed for development of physical applications, all variables are based on physical quantities. This allows physicists to analytically assess measurement parameters and optimize machine parameters in a more intuitive manner. To enhance both extensibility and adaptability, a modular design strategy is utilized, partitioning the entire framework into discrete modules in alignment with the requirements of HLA development. This strategy not only facilitates the independent development of each module but also minimizes inter-module coupling, thereby simplifying the maintenance and expansion of the entire framework. To simplify the development complexity, the design of the new framework is implemented using Python and is called Python-based Accelerator Physics Application Set (Pyapas). Taking advantage of Python's flexibility and robust library support, we are able to develop and iterate quickly, while also allowing for seamless integration with other scientific computing applications. HLAs for both the HEPS linac and booster have been successfully developed. During the beam commissioning process at the linac, Pyapas's ease of use and reliability have significantly reduced the time required for the beam commissioning operators. As a development framework for HLA designed for the new-generation light sources, Pyapas has the versatility to be employed with HEPS, as well as with other comparable light sources, due to its adaptability. Considering the demand of users to achieve minimum emittance and thus the dynamic aperture shrink, it is consistently important to find an optimal scheme for injecting the beam with the maximum current to fill the acceptance. We present an on-axis injection scheme with designed elements of the injection system such as septum and pulsed sextupole magnet (PSM) in the 3.5 GeV storage ring. The on-axis injection with the pulsed sextupole magnet will allow frequent low-charge which will further improve the stability in the storage ring. A macroparticle beam of Gaussian distribution is used for simulating the injection process by the ELEGANT code. The multiturn injection has been used in the simulations of the injection process in the storage ring. By studying the theory of particle accumulation in each turn of the injection, we calculated the number of possible injection times. A PSM with the desired strength and suitable location can kick the injected beam into limited acceptance. In this study, the reason for the superiority of pulsed sextupole magnet in the injection system over pulsed quadrupole magnet (PQM) has been proposed. The injection system supplies a top-up mode in which the beam current is maintained high by frequent injections in the storage ring. Various errors such as misalignment, space-charge and mismatch are included to obtain realistic simulations of the injection process. Gas bremsstrahlung, generated by the interaction between stored electrons and residual gas in electron storage rings, is an important radiation source for the shielding of synchrotron radiation (SR) facilities. In recent SR facilities, hydrogen was found dominant in the residual gas of the vacuum chambers of the electron storage rings, although air has been conventionally assumed as the bremsstrahlung target for the shielding designs of SR beamlines extended from the electron storage ring. To study the effect of residual gas composition on the dose rate outside shields, we calculated the intensity of gas bremsstrahlung based on the gas composition for both the air and the residual gas expected in the recent electron storage rings using an analytical formula and general-purpose Monte Carlo codes for particle transport calculations. The analytical shielding calculation with a realistic gas composition was found to well reproduce the energy spectra of gas bremsstrahlung simulated by the Monte Carlo codes. The correction factors between the air and the realistic gas compositions are applied to the conventional analytical formulas for dose estimation of secondary radiations generated by the interaction between the bremsstrahlung from air and beamline components. The Swiss Light Source (SLS) is an electron synchrotron at the Paul Scherrer Institute established in 2001. With an electron energy of 2.4 GeV and 16 operation beamlines, it provides photons for research in various fields of science. This paper describes the approach for the dismantling of the SLS storage ring from the material clearance point of view. It summarizes the general methods used for clearance and their application to the material to be cleared due to the SLS 2.0 upgrade. Cross-sections and rate coefficients for rovibronic excitation of the CH+ ion by electron impact and dissociative recombination of CH+ with electrons are evaluated using a theoretical approach combining an R-matrix method and molecular quantum defect theory. The method has been developed and tested, comparing the theoretical results with the data from the recent Cryogenic Storage Ring experiment. The obtained cross-sections and rate coefficients evaluated for temperatures from 1 to 10 000 K could be used for plasma modelling in the interpretation of astrophysical observations and also in the technological applications where the molecular hydrocarbon plasma is present. Mutual neutralization of hydronium (H3O+) and hydroxide (OH−) ions is a very fundamental chemical reaction. Yet, there is only limited experimental evidence about the underlying reaction mechanisms. Here, we report three-dimensional imaging of coincident neutral products of mutual-neutralization reactions at low collision energies of cold and isolated ions in the cryogenic double electrostatic ion-beam storage ring (DESIREE). We identified predominant H2O + OH + H and 2OH + H2 product channels and attributed them to an electron-transfer mechanism, whereas a minor contribution of H2O + H2O with high internal excitation was attributed to proton transfer. The reported mechanism-resolved internal product excitation, as well as collision-energy and initial ion-temperature dependence, provide a benchmark for modeling charge-transfer mechanisms. The past, current and planned future developments of X-ray imagers in the Photon-Science Detector Group at DESY-Hamburg is presented. the X-ray imagers are custom developed and tailored to the different X-ray sources in Hamburg, including the storage ring PETRA III/IV; the VUV-soft X-ray free electron laser FLASH, and the European Free-Electron Laser. The advances in technology mainly concerning ion traps, storage rings, lasers, high-precision frequency measurements, detectors, and particle beams as well as advances in atom and ion manipulation have allowed for a considerable progress in the determination of fundamental parameters and quantities of radionuclides such as masses, electromagnetic moments, lifetimes and beta decay correlations. The main subjects covered by this topical collection are: high-precision mass measurements both with Penning traps and storage rings for neutrino physics, nuclear structure, astrophysics, and decay studies. Laser spectroscopy is applied for the determination of other ground state properties like spins, moments, and nuclear charge radii. The short wavelength operation of free-electron laser (FEL) oscillators is limited by the availability of high-reflectivity, thermally stable, and radiation-resistant FEL mirrors in the vacuum UV (VUV) wavelength. We report our recent work to extend the shortest lasing wavelength of the oscillator FEL to 168.6 nm using a storage ring FEL. This progress has been made possible by developing a new FEL configuration with substantially reduced undulator harmonic radiation on the FEL mirror, a thermally stable FEL optical cavity, and a new type of high-reflectivity fluoride-based multilayer coating with a protective capping layer. Using these fluoride-based mirrors, we have demonstrated storage ring FEL lasing from 168.6 to 179.7 nm with excellent beam stability. Employing this VUV FEL in Compton scattering, we have produced the first 120 MeV gamma rays at the High Intensity Gamma-ray Source (HIGS). Operating the HIGS in this new high-energy region will create many new opportunities for photonuclear physics research, in particular, the low-energy quantum chromodynamics research. Young's double-slit interference experiments with undulator vortex radiation were conducted, focusing on photon-counting regime. To isolate the second harmonic radiation in the ultraviolet range emitted from the helical undulator and achieve successful counting measurements, an ultranarrow bandpass filter was utilized under an extremely low-current mode of the electron storage ring. It was observed that the photon spots on the detector, after passing through the double slits, appeared to be randomly distributed. However, upon integrating these photon spots, it was confirmed that interference fringes with characteristic features of optical vortices, such as dark and broken/distorted stripes in the center, were formed. The reproducibility of these interference fringes was confirmed by calculating the optical path difference for the optical vortex reaching the double slits, as well as the optical path difference resulting from normal double-slit interference. Consequently, these findings indicate that even in the state of a single photon, the radiation emitted spontaneously by a high-energy electron in spiral motion possesses the nature of an optical vortex, characterized by a spiral wavefront. The dynamics of spin in external electromagnetic, gravitational, and axion fields is analyzed in the framework of the gravitoelectromagnetism approach in Einstein's general relativity theory. We consistently extend the recent studies from the flat Minkowski geometry to the curved spacetime manifolds, contributing to the discussion of the possible new role of a precessing spin as an "axion antenna" that can be used to detect the hypothetical axion-like dark matter. The formalism developed helps to clarify the subtle influence of the gravitational/inertial and axion fields in the ultra-sensitive high-energy spin experiments with charged particles and neutrons at accelerators and storage rings devoted to testing fundamental physical symmetries, including attempts to establish the nature of dark matter in the Universe. In this Letter, we report on the concept and analysis of a low-emittance electron storage ring, in which the electron beams undergo an early-stage self-amplified spontaneous emission lasing process on a turn-by-turn basis. The lasing process for each pass through a long undulator in the ring is terminated when the radiated power is still negligible compared to the total synchrotron loss of each circulation, and the electron beams can be maintained in an equilibrium state that supports sustainable lasing. A self-consistent model is derived for evaluation of the properties of the electron beams, and a design with numerical modeling is presented that demonstrates the feasibility of generating short wavelength radiation at the kW power level. To steer and track electron motion in atoms, molecules, and nanostructures, light pulses with attosecond duration and high repetition rate are required. In this paper, we use the angular dispersion-induced microbunching scheme and a few-cycle laser within a straight section (a few meters) of a diffraction-limited storage ring to generate a coherent high-flux attosecond pulse in the water window region. Simulation results based on the Southern Advanced Photon Source indicate that the proposed method can generate a chirp-free Fourier transform limited pulse with a minimum duration of 50 as, a maximum repetition rate of a few MHz, and a maximum average flux of about 4.4 × 10 11 photons/s/1%Bw. Coherent spin motion is a necessary condition to search for the electric dipole moment of charged particles in a storage ring. The first step to increase the spin coherence time is to turn on a radiofrequency cavity. The next step is to manipulate equilibrium energy levels associated with betatron orbit lengthening and nonlinear momentum compaction factor. The SAXSMAT beamline P62 (Small-Angle X-ray Scattering beamline for Materials Research) is a new beamline at the high-energy storage ring PETRA III at DESY. This beamline is dedicated to combined small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS/WAXS) techniques for both soft and hard condensed matter systems. It works mainly in transmission geometry. The beamline covers an energy range from 3.5 keV to 35.0 keV, which fulfills the requirements of the user community to perform anomalous scattering experiments. Mirrors are used to reduce the intensity of higher harmonics. Furthermore, the mirrors and 2D compound refracting lenses can focus the beam down to a few micrometres at the sample position. This option with the high photon flux enables also SAXS/WAXS tensor tomography experiments to be performed at this new beamline in a relatively short time. The first SAXS/ WAXS pattern was collected in August 2021, while the first user experiment was carried out two months later. Since January 2022 the beamline has been in regular user operation mode. The cool storage ring (CSR) external-target experiment (CEE) will be the first large-scale nuclear physics experiment at the Heavy Ion Research Facility in Lanzhou (HIRFL). The beam monitor, designed to measure the lateral position of each beam particle, will improve the precision of primary vertex reconstruction otherwise determined by the time projection chamber (TPC) and multi-wire drift chambers (MWDCs). The beam monitor mainly contains two gaseous ionization sub-detectors, each measuring one lateral coordinate of the beam. The design requirements include the spatial resolution of m, the two-particle separation capability of s, the rate capability of pps, and small material budget. It features novel front-end pixel chips for both charge sensing and readout functions. The first prototype, utilizing the common-purpose Topmetal-II-chips, has been developed and tested; the second one, deploying the custom-designed Topmetal-CEEv1 chips, is currently being assembled. Many particle accelerators rely on maintaining low pressures to ensure efficient operation, minimize beam losses, and reduce radiation background. To ensure a beam lifetime of 1-20 hours for the Synchrotron-light for Experimental Science and Applications in the Middle East (SESAME) vacuum system, an ideal average dynamic pressure of 1×10-9 mbar was targeted. This pressure was intended to be maintained while running the accelerator at a current of 400 mA after a cumulative dose of 100 Ah. In this study, a MATLAB code was employed to develop a series of one-dimensional equations that simulate the behavior of the vacuum system within the SESAME storage ring. The proposed model was then compared with the results generated by the VACCALC software and the Particle Monte Carlo (TPMC) MOLFLOW code, establishing a comprehensive assessment framework. The collected data from the model was subsequently compared with the recorded static and dynamic pressure measurements obtained during more than 1000 Ah of beam conditioning at 2.5 GeV. In results, the projected and actual values of dynamic pressures exhibited a satisfactory degree of agreement across the investigated range of beam conditioning doses, with a consistency factor exceeding 2 after a 100 Ah dose. It is proposed to use the photoelectric effect on inner s shells of the 229Th atom to more accurately determine the energy of its 8.3-eV isomer. The calculation has been performed using the Feinberg–Migdal shaking theory, which gives the probability of the formation of the isomer up to on the K shell. As a result, two lines separated by the energy of the isomer has been predicted in the spectrum of photoelectrons. Other applications of the method to study the properties of the isomer, including that through shaking at the formation of radioactive beams at storage rings, have also been discussed. Furthermore, the experimental detection of the effect will make it possible to determine more accurately its partial lifetime. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Following Phase 2 of the upgrade of the ESRF in which the storage ring was replaced by a new low-emittance ring along with many other facility upgrades, the status of ID22, the high-resolution powder-diffraction beamline, is described. The beamline has an in-vacuum undulator as source providing X-rays in the range 6-75 keV. ID22's principle characteristics include very high angular resolution as a result of the highly collimated and monochromatic beam, coupled with a 13-channel Si 111 multi-analyser stage between the sample and a Dectris Eiger2 X 2M-W CdTe pixel detector. The detector's axial resolution allows recorded 2θ values to be automatically corrected for the effects of axial divergence, resulting in narrower and more-symmetric peaks compared with the previous fixed-axial-slit arrangement. The axial acceptance can also be increased with increasing diffraction angle, thus simultaneously improving the statistical quality of high-angle data. A complementary Perkin Elmer XRD1611 medical-imaging detector is available for faster, lower-resolution data, often used at photon energies of 60-70 keV for pair-distribution function analysis, although this is also possible in high-resolution mode by scanning up to 120° 2θ at 35 keV. There are various sample environments, allowing sample temperatures from 4 K to 1600°C, a capillary cell for non-corrosive gas atmospheres in the range 0-100 bar, and a sample-changing robot that can accommodate 75 capillary samples compatible with the temperature range 80 K to 950°C. Traditional off-axis injection becomes inadequate in diffraction limited storage ring (DLSR) for its small dynamic aperture (DA). On-axis injection with thin septum could solve the problem. This paper focuses on the theoretical calculation, field simulation, and measurement of thin septum magnets. The scheme of eddycurrent type thin septum magnets (the thinnest portion is with the thickness of 0.9 mm) was adopted with laminated silicon steel sheets as the magnet core. The simulation of main field, stray field along the beam trajectory, the leakage field decayed over 1 millisecond time was carried out within Opera 2D/3D. Field measurement and analysis of thin septum magnets also has been conducted comprehensively. The results meet requirements, and the work laid a foundation for injection technology of an advanced light source. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A heavy-ion collision facility called the cooler storage ring (CSR) external-target experiment (CEE) is scheduled in Lanzhou, China. The time measurement of the charged particles at the forward angle will be conducted by the external time-of-flight (eTOF) subsystem, which is built with multigap resistive plate chambers (MRPC). This work describes the tasks, performance criteria, detector layout, and prototype test results while outlining the technical design and development status of the CEE-eTOF wall. The effectiveness of the wall design has been validated using a FairRoot-based simulation, which is an essential part of the verification. With a 3.2 × 1.6 m 2 coverage, a 60 ps overall time resolution, and a 2.6 m distance from the collision point, the eTOF wall enables the particle identification, system triggering, and event selection in cooperation with other related detectors. A novel structure called sealed MRPC will be applied to the subsystem. The design considerations of this type, prototype test, and results are also described in this paper. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A novel scheme is proposed for realizing effective DC acceleration of charged particles in a circular ring. The key is to use an induction acceleration cell with multi-insulating gaps that allow forced short circuit using solid-state switching devices such as SiC-MOSFET or unforced short circuit using diodes. A baseline design of the induction acceleration cell is shown. A coasting beam is accelerated in the circular ring without bunching. As its possible application, a continuous-wave terahertz free-electron laser (FEL) is proposed with numerical parameters, where this effective DC acceleration compensates for energy loss of the electron beam occupying the entire isochronous storage ring due to synchrotron radiation and FEL interaction. As a result, FEL microbunching of a coasting beam can be created, resulting in a high average output power that has not been possible with existing linac-driven FELs or RF storage-ring FELs. High-resolution experiments with stored and cooled exotic nuclei have been pioneered and applied with the FRS-ESR facilities at GSI since 1991. Exotic nuclei have been produced, spatially separated in flight with the FRS and injected in the longitudinal dispersive storage ring ESR for high-resolution mass and lifetime measurements. For very short-lived nuclei, i.e., with lifetimes shorter than the cooling time, the ion-optical system of the ring has to be operated in the so-called isochronous mode. Under this condition, the inherent momentum spread of the fragments does not limit the accuracy of experiments if both the revolution time and the magnetic rigidity are simultaneously measured for the circulating ions. In this contribution, we demonstrate a novel feature for the ESR operated in the isochronous mode and the phase-space matching of FRS and ESR. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Low-energy investigations on rare ion beams are often limited by the available intensity and purity of the ion species in focus. Here, we present the first application of a technique that combines in-flight production at relativistic energies with subsequent secondary beam storage, accumulation and finally deceleration to the energy of interest. Using the FRS and ESR facilities at GSI, this scheme was pioneered to provide a secondary beam of 118Te 52 + for the measurement of nuclear proton-capture at energies of 6 and 7 MeV/u. The technique provided stored beam intensities of about 1 0 6 ions at high purity and brilliance, representing a major step towards low-energy nuclear physics studies using rare ion beams.
