Background: Non-motor symptoms, including depression and cognitive impairment, are common in essential tremor (ET), but associations between these symptoms and tremor are poorly understood., Methods: A retrospective, single-institution, cohort study evaluated 140 patients with ET undergoing evaluation for deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery. The Fahn-Tolosa-Marin (FTM) or Washington Heights-Inwood Genetic Study of ET (WHIGET) scale was used to grade tremor. Tremor scores were divided into quartiles. Patients underwent clinical neuropsychological evaluations that included a comprehensive cognitive test battery and Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II). Subgroup analysis was performed with groups who met criteria for depression (BDI-II > 14) or overall cognitive impairment (<9th percentile on at least two dissimilar cognitive tests). Independent samples t-tests were used for continuous variables and chi square tests for categorical variables. Univariable and multivariable regressions were used to determine relationships between tremor and non-motor scores., Results: Tremor quartile was correlated with language domain performance (p = 0.044) but not depression scores. FTM score was associated with BDI-II (β = 0.940, p = 0.010), language (β = -0.936, p = 0.012), and visuospatial domain (β = -0.836, p = 0.025) scores, such that worse tremor was associated with more depression and worse language and visuospatial function. WHIGET score was not associated with any neuropsychological scores on multivariable regression., Conclusion: FTM score was associated with language, visuospatial, and mood symptoms, suggesting a relationship between the severity of these symptom types. Cognitive impairment is the most frequent non-motor symptom in Parkinson's disease and is associated with deficits in a number of cognitive functions including working memory. However, the pathophysiology of Parkinson's disease cognitive impairment is poorly understood. Beta oscillations have previously been shown to play an important role in cognitive functions including working memory encoding. Decreased dopamine in motor cortico-striato-thalamo-cortical (CSTC) circuits increases the spectral power of beta oscillations and results in Parkinson's disease motor symptoms. Analogous changes in parallel cognitive CSTC circuits involving the caudate and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) may contribute to Parkinson's disease cognitive impairment. The objective of our study is to evaluate whether changes in beta oscillations in the caudate and DLPFC contribute to cognitive impairment in Parkinson's disease patients. To investigate this, we used local field potential recordings during deep brain stimulation surgery in 15 patients with Parkinson's disease. Local field potentials were recorded from DLPFC and caudate at rest and during a working memory task. We examined changes in beta oscillatory power during the working memory task as well as the relationship of beta oscillatory activity to preoperative cognitive status, as determined from neuropsychological testing results. We additionally conducted exploratory analyses on the relationship between cognitive impairment and task-based changes in spectral power in additional frequency bands. Spectral power of beta oscillations decreased in both DLPFC and caudate during working memory encoding and increased in these structures during feedback. Subjects with cognitive impairment had smaller decreases in caudate and DLPFC beta oscillatory power during encoding. In our exploratory analysis, we found that similar differences occurred in alpha frequencies in caudate and theta and alpha in DLPFC. Our findings suggest that oscillatory power changes in cognitive CSTC circuits may contribute to cognitive symptoms in patients with Parkinson's disease. Background: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) for Parkinson disease provides significant improvement of motor symptoms but can also produce neurocognitive side effects. A decline in verbal fluency (VF) is among the most frequently reported side effects. Preoperative factors that could predict VF decline have yet to be identified., Objective: To develop predictive models of DBS postoperative VF decline using a machine learning approach., Methods: We used a prospective database of patients who underwent neuropsychological and VF assessment before both subthalamic nucleus (n = 47, bilateral = 44) and globus pallidus interna (n = 43, bilateral = 39) DBS. We used a neurobehavioral rating profile as features for modeling postoperative VF. We constructed separate models for action, semantic, and letter VF. We used a leave-one-out scheme to test the accuracy of the predictive models using median absolute error and correlation with actual postoperative scores., Results: The predictive models were able to predict the 3 types of VF with high accuracy ranging from a median absolute error of 0.92 to 1.36. Across all three models, higher preoperative fluency, digit span, education, and Mini-Mental State Examination were predictive of higher postoperative fluency scores. By contrast, higher frontal system deficits, age, Questionnaire for Impulsive-Compulsive Disorders in Parkinson's disease scored by the patient, disease duration, and Behavioral Inhibition/Behavioral Activation Scale scores were predictive of lower postoperative fluency scores., Conclusion: Postoperative VF can be accurately predicted using preoperative neurobehavioral rating scores above and beyond preoperative VF score and relies on performance over different aspects of executive function., (Copyright © Congress of Neurological Surgeons 2022. The social impairments of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have a major impact on quality of life, yet there are no medications that effectively treat these core social behavior deficits. Preclinical research suggests that arginine vasopressin (AVP), a neuropeptide involved in promoting mammalian social behaviors, may be a possible treatment for ASD. Using a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, parallel study design, we tested the efficacy and tolerability of a 4-week intranasal AVP daily treatment in 30 children with ASD. AVP-treated participants aged 6 to 9.5 years received the maximum daily target dose of 24 International Units (IU); participants aged 9.6 to 12.9 years received the maximum daily target dose of 32 IU. Intranasal AVP treatment compared to placebo enhanced social abilities as assessed by change from baseline in this phase 2 trial's primary outcome measure, the Social Responsiveness Scale, 2nd Edition total score (SRS-2 T score; F 1,20 = 9.853; P = 0.0052; η p 2 = 33.0%; Cohen's d = 1.40). AVP treatment also diminished anxiety symptoms and some repetitive behaviors. Most of these findings were more pronounced when we accounted for pretreatment AVP concentrations in blood. AVP was well tolerated with minimal side effects. No AVP-treated participants dropped out of the trial, and there were no differences in the rate of adverse events reported between treatment conditions. Last, no changes from baseline were observed in vital signs, electrocardiogram tracings, height and body weight, or clinical chemistry measurements after 4 weeks of AVP treatment. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by core social deficits. Prognosis is poor, in part, because existing medications target only associated ASD features. Emerging evidence suggests that the neuropeptide oxytocin (OXT) may be a blood-based biomarker of social functioning and a possible treatment for ASD. However, prior OXT treatment trials have produced equivocal results, perhaps because of variability in patients' underlying neuropeptide biology, but this hypothesis has not been tested. Using a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, parallel design, we tested the efficacy and tolerability of 4-wk intranasal OXT treatment (24 International Units, twice daily) in 32 children with ASD, aged 6-12 y. When pretreatment neuropeptide measures were included in the statistical model, OXT compared with placebo treatment significantly enhanced social abilities in children with ASD [as measured by the trial's primary outcome measure, the Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS)]. Importantly, pretreatment blood OXT concentrations also predicted treatment response, such that individuals with the lowest pretreatment OXT concentrations showed the greatest social improvement. OXT was well tolerated, and its effects were specific to social functioning, with no observed decrease in repetitive behaviors or anxiety. Finally, as with many trials, some placebo-treated participants showed improvement on the SRS. This enhanced social functioning was mirrored by a posttreatment increase in their blood OXT concentrations, suggesting that increased endogenous OXT secretion may underlie this improvement. These findings indicate that OXT treatment enhances social abilities in children with ASD and that individuals with pretreatment OXT signaling deficits may stand to benefit the most from OXT treatment., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

Coprime linear microphone arrays allow for narrower beams with fewer sensors. A coprime microphone array consists of two staggered uniform linear subarrays with M and N microphones, where M and N are coprime with each other. By applying spatial filtering to both subarrays and combining their outputs, M+N-1 microphones yield M⋅N directional bands. In this work, the coprime sampling theory is implemented in the form of a linear microphone array of 16 elements with coprime numbers of 9 and 8. This coprime microphone array is experimentally tested to validate the coprime array theory. Both predicted and measured results are discussed. Experimental results confirm that narrow beampatterns as predicted by the coprime sampling theory can be obtained by the coprime microphone array.

Existing secondary-edge-source methods based on the Biot-Tolstoy solution for diffraction from an infinite wedge compute multiple-order diffraction by cascading the integration over secondary sources used to determine first-order diffraction from the edge. It is demonstrated here that this approach errs in some important cases because it neglects slope-diffraction contributions. This error is illustrated by considering the case of an infinite slit in a thin, hard screen. Comparisons with measurements for this case and analytical solutions for the case of a circular aperture in a thin, hard screen are used as a basis to gauge the magnitude of the error.

It is hypothesized that room-acoustical quality correlates with the information-transfer rate. Auditoria are considered as multiple-input multiple-output communication channels and a theory of information-transfer is outlined that accounts for time-variant multipath, spatial hearing, and distributed directional sources. Source diversity and spatial hearing are shown to be the mechanisms through which multipath increases the information-transfer rate by overcoming finite spatial resolution. In addition to predictions that are confirmed by recent and historical findings, the theory provides explanations for the influence of factors such as musical repertoire and ensemble size on subjective preference and the influence of multisource, multichannel auralization on perceived realism.

A statistical-acoustics model for energy decay in systems of two or more coupled rooms is introduced, which accounts for the distribution of delay in the transfer of energy between subrooms that results from the finite speed of sound. The method extends previous models based on systems of coupled ordinary differential equations by using functional differential equations to explicitly model dependence on prior values of energy in adjacent subrooms. Predictions of the model are illustrated for a two-room coupled system and compared with the predictions of a benchmark computational geometrical-acoustics model.

An underwater acoustic experiment with a two-dimensional rough interface, milled from a slab of PVC, was performed at a tank facility. The purpose was to verify the predictions of numerical models of acoustic rough surface scattering, using a manufactured physical model of an ocean bottom that featured shear effects, nonhomogeneous roughness statistics, and root-mean-square roughness amplitude on the order of the acoustic wavelength. Predictions of the received time series and interface scattering strength in the 100-300 kHz band were obtained from the Bottom Reverberation from Inhomogeneities and Surfaces-Small-Slope Approximation (BORIS-SSA) numerical scattering model. The predictions were made using direct measurements of scattering model inputs-specifically, the geoacoustic properties from laboratory analysis of material samples and the grid of surface heights from a touch-trigger probe. BORIS-SSA predictions for the amplitude of the received time series were shown to be accurate with a root-mean-square residual error of about 1 dB, while errors for the scattering strength prediction were higher (2-3.5 dB). The work is part of an ongoing effort to use physical models to examine a variety of acoustic scattering and propagation phenomena involving the ocean bottom.

An improved statistical-acoustics model of high-frequency sound fields in coupled rooms is developed by incorporating into prior models geometrical-acoustics corrections for both energy decay within subrooms and energy transfer between subrooms. The conditions under which statistical-acoustics models of coupled rooms are valid approximations to geometrical acoustics are examined by comparison of computational geometrical-acoustics predictions of decay curves in two- and three-room systems with those of both improved and prior statistical-acoustics models. The accuracy of the decay model used within subrooms is found to have a primary influence on the accuracy of predictions in coupled systems. Likewise, nondiffuse transfer of energy is shown to significantly affect decay of energy in systems of coupled rooms. The decrease in energy density of the reverberant field with distance from the source, which is predicted by geometrical acoustics, is found to result in spatial dependence of decay-curve shape for certain coupling geometries. Geometrical effects are shown to contribute to the failure of statistical-acoustics models in the case of strong coupling between subrooms; thus, previously proposed statistical-acoustics criteria cannot predict the point at which the models break down with consistent accuracy.

The architecture of the pod wall and dehiscence zone (DZ) was studied in populations of a resynthesized, shatter-resistant, oilseed rape line, DK142, and the commercial cultivar Apex. The dimensions of the pod wall and its component tissues were significantly larger in DK142. However, the variation in the pod architecture of Apex, DK142 and F2 populations derived from crosses of DK142 and Apex was found to have little or no role in pod shatter. By contrast, variation in the dimensions of the DZ characters correlated strongly and positively with shatter resistance. The size of the main vascular bundle (MVBV) of DK142 as it exited the valve and joined the vascular tissue of the replum was, on average, 60% larger than in Apex, the DZ was 40% wider and there was a high preponderance of vascular tissue other than the MVBV. The variation in the size of the MVBV accounted for much of the variation in shatter resistance of all populations, including shatter-susceptible Apex. The DZ width was also found to be important in explaining the limited range of shatter values in Apex, but in populations of DK142 and F2, where the amount of vascular intrusion into the DZ was much greater, the variation in DZ width was not important. The importance of the vascular tissue to shatter resistance was further highlighted by a novel microfracture test (MFT). By contrast, no significant difference between DK142 and Apex in the ease of separation of the thin-walled DZ cells was detected using the MFT.

Elongation by stems of overwintered tubers of Potamogeton pectinatus (L.) is strongly promoted over several days by oxygen-free conditions. Characteristics of the respiration underpinning this unusual response were examined. Anaerobic plants produced ethanol and CO(2) in approximately equimolar amounts, indicating that glycolysis coupled to alcoholic fermentation was the principal CO(2)-producing respiratory pathway. Rates of CO(2) evolution by aerobic and anaerobic whole plants (shoot and tuber) were similar, suggesting a rate of glycolysis three times that of aerobic plants, i.e. a strong Pasteur effect. In the shoot alone, anaerobic CO(2) production was twice the aerobic rate indicating a 6-fold increase in the rate of glycolysis in this tissue. Anoxic stems contained more sucrose at a stronger concentration than slower-growing aerobic stems or anaerobic leaves, demonstrating that sugar supply to the site of most rapid growth exceeded demand in the absence of oxygen. Concentrations of potentially toxic acetaldehyde in the external medium were small (approximately 0.2 mol m(-3)) during anoxia and on return to aerated conditions. A highly sensitive laser-driven photoacoustic detector responsive to [less than or equal to]2.1 nmol m-3 ethylene (50 parts per trillion [v/v]) was used for ethylene analysis. Dark-grown plants of Potamogeton pectinatus L. growing from small tubers made no ethylene. Exposure of shoots to white light, wounding, submergence in water followed by desubmergence, partial oxygen shortage, indole acetic acid, or carbon dioxide failed to induce ethylene production, although clear effects were observed in Pisum sativum L. Some ethylene was released after applying high concentrations of the ethylene precursor 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC; 10 mol m-3) to P. pectinatus, but the amount was trivial compared with that released by P. sativum. More endogenous ACC was found in P. pectinatus than in P. sativum. Considerable ACC oxidase activity was present in tissue extracts of P. sativum. However, no ACC oxidase activity was found in P. pectinatus, indicating that this is where ethylene production is arrested.

Analysis of the Journal of The American Dietetic Association was undertaken for 1967 to 1983 to determine whether there were changes that might have resulted from the report of the 1972 Study Commission on Dietetics. The study analyzed such factors as the number of original articles, educational background of authors and Journal advisory board members, abstracting of other Journal articles, indexing, citation analysis, and impact factor of the Journal. Study results show increased educational qualifications of authors and advisory board members, more original articles, more efficient indexing, and greater citation frequency.

The effects and site(s) of action of progesterone on DMBA mammary carcinogenesis in the rat, when a small dose of the carcinogen was applied directly to the inguinal mammary gland, were investigated. No reduction in tumour yield was apparent when progesterone was administered s.c. for 18 days before dusting DMBA. This finding contrasts with a previously reported inhibitory effect on carcinogenesis when hormone treatment was followed by intragastric administration of DMBA. When progesterone injections were begun either 2 days before or 2 days after direct application of DMBA, and were continued until the end of the experiment (135 or 195 days) an enhancement in carcinogenesis was observed similar to that previously demonstrated after gastric intubation of DMBA. These findings, together with previously reported observations, suggest that progesterone may exert its inhibitory effect on carcinogenesis by acting at a site outside the breast, perhaps on the liver. However, it is likely that the hormone acts directly on the mammary tissue to exert its enhancing effect on tumorigenesis.
