Background: Emotional labor, distinct from physical and mental labor, has gained significant attention in contemporary organizational psychology research. As a strategy for performing emotional labor, surface acting refers to the process of faking emotions to meet the demands of organizations' norms. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between emotional intelligence and surface acting among Chinese kindergarten teachers, focusing on the mediating role of self-efficacy and work engagement. Methods: Integrating the conservation of resources theory and the job demands-resources model, a questionnaire survey was conducted among 1,017 Chinese kindergarten teachers using Wong & Law Emotional Intelligence Scale, Self-Efficacy Scale, Utrecht Work Engagement Scale, and Surface Acting Scale. SPSS 26.0 was used to conduct descriptive statistics and correlation tests. Structural equation modeling and mediation analysis were constructed using AMOS 28.0. Results: The results showed reveals several key findings. Firstly, kindergarten teachers' emotional intelligence significantly positively predicted surface acting rather than negatively. Secondly, self-efficacy and work engagement, respectively, mediate the relationship between emotional intelligence and surface acting in kindergarten teachers. Additionally, self-efficacy and work engagement have chain mediating effects in the relationship between kindergarten teachers' emotional intelligence and surface acting. Conclusion: The research findings reveal the influencing mechanism of kindergarten teachers' emotional intelligence on surface acting, providing a theoretical basis and practical implications for understanding and promoting the reasonable use of surface acting by kindergarten teachers in the Chinese context. Variability in the availability of resources through time is a common attribute in trophic interactions, but its effects on the fitness of different consumer species and on interspecific competition between them are not clearly understood.To investigate this, we allowed two parasitoid species, Trichopria drosophilae and Pachycrepoideus vindemiae, to exploit Drosophila host pupae under different temporal variability treatments, either on their own or simultaneously.When tested individually (in the absence of interspecific competition), both parasitoid species had lower fitness when hosts were exposed for a short duration at high density than when exposed for a long duration at low density. When both parasitoid species exploited hosts simultaneously, interspecific competition significantly decreased the number of offspring for both parasitoid species. The outcome of this interspecific competition depended on host temporal variability, with T. drosophilae or P. vindemiae dominating in short and long host exposure treatments, respectively.These results can be explained by the combination of host availability and egg load of female adult parasitoids. When abundant hosts are provided for a short period, the ample mature eggs of the proovigenic T. drosophilae enable them to exploit hosts more efficiently than P. vindemiae, which is synovigenic. However, P. vindemiae is an intrinsically superior competitor and dominates when multiparasitism occurs. Multiparasitism is more frequent when hosts are at low levels relative to the egg load of the parasitoids.Our results clearly demonstrate that resource temporal availability can alter the outcome of competition between consumers with different reproductive traits. Litter's chemical complexity influences carbon (C) cycling during its decomposition. However, the chemical and microbial mechanisms underlying the divergence or convergence of chemical complexity under UV radiation remain poorly understood. Here, we conducted a 397-day field experiment using 13C cross-polarization magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (13C-CPMAS NMR) to investigate the interactions among the initial chemistry, microbial communities, and UV radiation during decomposition. Our study found that the initial concentrations of O-substituted aromatic C, di-O-alkyl C, and O-alkyl C in Deschampsia caespitosa were higher than those in Kobresia tibetica. Litter's chemical composition exhibited divergent patterns based on the initial chemistry, UV radiation, and decay time. Specifically, D. caespitosa consistently displayed higher concentrations of di-O-alkyl C and O-alkyl C compared to K. tibetica, regardless of the UV exposure and decay time. Additionally, litter's chemical complexity was positively correlated with changes in the extracellular enzyme activities, particularly those involved in lignin, cellulose, and hemicellulose degradation, which accounted for 9%, 20%, and 4% of the variation in litter's chemical complexity, respectively. These findings highlighted the role of distinct microbial communities in decomposing different C components through catabolism, leading to chemical divergence in litter. During the early decomposition stages, oligotrophic Planctomycetes and Acidobacteria metabolized O-alkyl C and di-O-alkyl C under UV-blocking conditions. In contrast, copiotrophic Actinobacteria and Chytridiomycota utilized these components under UV radiation exposure, reflecting their ability to thrive under UV stress conditions due to their rapid growth strategies in environments rich in labile C. Our study revealed that the inherent differences in the initial O-alkyl C and di-O-alkyl C contributed to the chemical divergence, while UV radiation further influenced this divergence by shifting the microbial community composition from oligotrophic to copiotrophic species. Thus, differences in the initial litter chemistry, microbial community, and UV radiation affected the quantity and quality of plant-derived C during decomposition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Parasitism is known to affect the behavior of host species to enhance parasite dispersal and transmission. However, host behavioral responses to parasitism unrelated to parasite dispersal and transmission have been much less studied. The objective of this study was to determine whether grasshopper hosts infected and uninfected with a parasitic fly (Blaesoxipha sp.) differ in terms of the nutrient content of the diet they consume. We investigated the dietary preferences of two grasshopper species (i.e. Asulconotus chinghaiensis and Chorthippus fallax) in terms of the C/N composition of plant species consumed, and determined whether this affected the egg production of unparasitized and parasitized grasshoppers by flies in a Tibetan alpine meadow. The composition of plants consumed differed significantly between the unparasitized and parasitized grasshoppers. Specifically, the abundance of N‐rich legumes was lower and that of high C/N grasses was higher in the diet of the parasitized compared to the unparasitized grasshoppers. Diet N content was higher and C/N was lower in the diet of unparasitized grasshoppers, and parasitized females produced fewer eggs than their unparasitized conspecifics. Future enquiries are needed to understand the specific mechanisms underlying these dietary differences.
