The melting temperature is important for materials design because of its relationship with thermal stability, synthesis, and processing conditions. Current empirical and computational melting point estimation techniques are limited in scope, computational feasibility, or interpretability. We report the development of a machine learning methodology for predicting melting temperatures of binary ionic solid materials. We evaluated different machine-learning models trained on a dataset of the melting points of 476 non-metallic crystalline binary compounds using materials embeddings constructed from elemental properties and density-functional theory calculations as model inputs. A direct supervised-learning approach yields a mean absolute error of around 180 K but suffers from low interpretability. We find that the fidelity of predictions can further be improved by introducing an additional unsupervised-learning step that first classifies the materials before the melting-point regression. Not only does this two-step model exhibit improved accuracy, but the approach also provides a level of interpretability with insights into feature importance and different types of melting that depend on the specific atomic bonding inside a material. Motivated by this finding, we used a symbolic learning approach to find interpretable physical models for the melting temperature, which recovered the best-performing features from both prior models and provided additional interpretability. For two-dimensional (2D) materials, the exact thickness of the material often dictates its physical and chemical properties. The 2D quantum material WTe2 possesses properties that vary significantly from a single layer to multiple layers, yet it has a complicated crystal structure that makes it difficult to differentiate thicknesses in atomic-resolution images. Furthermore, its air sensitivity and susceptibility to electron beam-induced damage heighten the need for direct ways to determine the thickness and atomic structure without acquiring multiple measurements or transferring samples in ambient atmosphere. Here, we demonstrate a new method to identify the thickness up to ten van der Waals layers in Td-WTe2 using atomic-resolution high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy image simulation. Our approach is based on analyzing the intensity line profiles of overlapping atomic columns and building a standard neural network model from the line profile features. We observe that it is possible to clearly distinguish between even and odd thicknesses (up to seven layers), without using machine learning, by comparing the deconvoluted peak intensity ratios or the area ratios. The standard neural network model trained on the line profile features allows thicknesses to be distinguished up to ten layers and exhibits an accuracy of up to 94% in the presence of Gaussian and Poisson noise. This method efficiently quantifies thicknesses in Td-WTe2, can be extended to related 2D materials, and provides a pathway to characterize precise atomic structures, including local thickness variations and atomic defects, for few-layer 2D materials with overlapping atomic column positions. The article presents a response to a study entitled "Competitive Advantages Through Artificial Intelligence: Toward a Theory of Situated AI," published by Ayenda Kemp. The author argues that Kemp's theory regarding the means through which artificial intelligence can promote competitive advantage does not take into account that pursuing AI could likewise have the opposite effect on competitive advantage. The article argues that Kemp's theory does not take into account certain factors, such as the impact AI has on social values, the impact AI has on the nature of the work process itself, and the potential for “algorithmic inertia” whereby the AI may lack the ability to adapt to environmental changes in a dynamic way.

Fault diagnosis is an indispensable basis for the collaborative maintenance in prognostic and health management. Most of existing data-driven fault diagnosis approaches are designed in the framework of supervised learning, which requires a large number of labelled samples. In this paper, a novel self-training semi-supervised deep learning (SSDL) approach is proposed to train a fault diagnosis model together with few labelled and abundant unlabelled samples. The addressed SSDL approach is realised by initialising a stacked sparse auto-encoder classifier using the labelled samples, and subsequently updating the classifier via sampling a few candidates with most reliable pseudo labels from the unlabelled samples step by step. Unlike the commonly used static sampling strategy in existing self-training semi-supervised frameworks, a gradually exploiting mechanism is proposed in SSDL to increase the number of selected pseudo-labelled candidates gradually. In addition, instead of using the prediction accuracy as the confidence estimation for pseudo-labels, a distance-based sampling criterion is designed to assign the label for each unlabelled sample by its nearest labelled sample based on their Euclidean distances in the deep feature space. The thermophysical properties of liquid metals and alloys are crucial to explore the intrinsic mechanisms of the solidification process, glass formation, and fluid dynamics. The deep learning approaches have emerged as powerful tools in numerous scientific fields and exhibit extraordinary accuracy in the estimation of physical properties and structural characteristics for various materials. In this Tutorial, focusing on the thermophysical properties of liquid multicomponent alloys, deep learning methods, including both supervised learning and active learning, are introduced. Combined with the verification from electrostatic and electromagnetic levitation experiments, the influences of training parameters and methods on the accuracy to obtain interatomic potential by deep learning are revealed on the basis of deep neural network algorithm. As a result, this prediction method of liquid state properties for multicomponent alloys exhibited the dual advantages of high accuracy derived from density functional theory and low computational cost associated with empirical potential. This study addresses the potential for improving the accuracy, scope, and value of sales research through the application of data mining and machine learning algorithms. By examining prior research, identifying opportunities for improvement, and assessing gaps that can benefit from machine learning, research and application are made more accessible for sales researchers and managers. Machine learning can address important sales research questions that cannot be answered with the same accuracy or efficiency as traditional research methods. This study demonstrates the benefits of the methods through an example of application to the prediction of salesforce performance based on behavioral, attitudinal, and demographic data. This includes future research ideas, usage cases, and applications where machine learning could advance sales research and management. This work uses supervised learning to optimize the package design with validated experimental results for piezoelectric micromachined ultrasonic transducers (PMUTs) to increase and alter the sound pressure level (SPL). Advancements as compared to the state-of-art include: (1) a neural network model to achieve a mean squared error of less than 0.65 dB2 post 100 epochs; (2) increased vibration amplitude by 17.9 dBV at the first-mode resonance frequency of 33.5 kHz; and (3) SPL enhancements below the 20 kHz frequency range such as the magnitude increases of more than 60 dBV at 5 kHz. As such, the package design shifts the emitting acoustic energy from the ultrasound to audio range in favor of various applications, including audio speakers.

Emoji are commonly used in social media to convey affects, emotions, and attitudes. While popular in social media, their use in educational contexts has been sparsely studied even though emoji can be a natural way for students to express what they are feeling about the learning material. This paper studies how students use instructor-selected emoji when relating to and engaging with educational content. We use an online platform for collaborative annotations where discussions are embedded into the readings for the course. We also make it possible for students to use 11 unique emoji-hashtag pairings to express their thoughts and feelings about the readings and the ongoing discussion. We provide an empirical analysis of the usage of these emoji-hashtag pairs by over 1,800 students enrolled in different offerings of an introductory biology course from multiple academic terms. We also introduce a heat map, which allows the instructional team to visualize the distribution and types of emoji used by students in different parts of the reading material. To evaluate the heat map, we conducted a user study with five instructors/TAs. We found that instructors/TAs use the heat map as a tool for identifying textbook sections that students find difficult and/or interesting and plan to use it to help them design the online content for future classes. Finally, we introduce a computational analysis for predicting emoji/hashtag pairs based on the content of a given student post. We use pre-trained deep learning language models (BERT) to predict the emoji attached to a student’s post and then study the extent to which this model generated in an introductory biology course can be generalized to predict student emoji usage in other courses.

In recent times, a variety of hybrid quantum–classical algorithms have been developed that aim to calculate the ground state energies of molecular systems on Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum (NISQ) devices. Albeit the utilization of shallow depth circuits in these algorithms, the optimization of ansatz parameters necessitates a substantial number of quantum measurements, leading to prolonged runtimes on the scantly available quantum hardware. Through our work, we lay the general foundation for an interdisciplinary approach that can be used to drastically reduce the dependency of these algorithms on quantum infrastructure. We showcase these pertinent concepts within the framework of the recently developed Projective Quantum Eigensolver (PQE) that involves iterative optimization of the nonlinearly coupled parameters through repeated residue measurements on quantum hardware. We demonstrate that one may perceive such a nonlinear optimization problem as a collective dynamic interplay of fast and slow relaxing modes. As such, the synergy among the parameters is exploited using an on-the-fly supervised machine learning protocol that dynamically casts the PQE optimization into a smaller subspace by reducing the effective degrees of freedom. We demonstrate analytically and numerically that our proposed methodology ensures a drastic reduction in the number of quantum measurements necessary for the parameter updates without compromising the characteristic accuracy. Furthermore, the machine learning model may be tuned to capture the noisy data of NISQ devices, and thus the predicted energy is shown to be resilient under a given noise model. Summary: Imbalanced samples are widespread, which impairs the generalization and fairness of models. Semi‐supervised learning can overcome the deficiency of rare labeled samples, but it is challenging to select high‐quality pseudo‐label data. Unlike discrete labels that can be matched one‐to‐one with points on a numerical axis, labels in regression tasks are consecutive and cannot be directly chosen. Besides, the distribution of unlabeled data is imbalanced, which easily leads to an imbalanced distribution of pseudo‐label data, exacerbating the imbalance in the semi‐supervised dataset. To solve this problem, this article proposes a semi‐supervised imbalanced regression network (SIRN), which consists of two components: A, designed to learn the relationship between features and labels (targets), and B, dedicated to learning the relationship between features and target deviations. To measure target deviations under imbalanced distribution, the target deviation function is introduced. To select continuous pseudo‐labels, the deviation matching strategy is designed. Furthermore, an adaptive selection function is developed to mitigate the risk of skewed distributions due to imbalanced pseudo‐label data. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method is validated through evaluations of two regression tasks. The results show a great reduction in predicted value error, particularly in few‐shot regions. Ship identification plays a critical role in maritime trade and military activities. Current research largely relies on deep learning-based methods, which demand extensive datasets and high-end hardware, often necessitating GPUs. This requirement significantly limits their practical application. Addressing this challenge, this paper introduces an enhanced bag-of-visual-words ( BoVW) model based on classical computer vision techniques for rapid ship identification. The proposed method initially employs SIFT and SURF techniques to extract local features from ship images, followed by rapid matching and fusion of these features. A graph-theoretic approach is then used to determine the regions of interest (ROI) within the image, reducing background interference. Subsequently, clustering algorithms transform features within the ROIs into visual words and construct a visual dictionary. Each image is described using histograms of visual words. The method also employs a spatial pyramid kernel to represent spatial relationships between image features and uses support vector machines (SVM) for supervised learning classification. Key parameters in the model include the size of the visual dictionary and the resolution level. Extensive experiments were conducted to explore these parameters. When the visual dictionary size was set to 300 and the resolution level to 2, the model achieved an accuracy and precision exceeding 96%,validating the effectiveness of the proposed method. Mental health is critical to an individual’s life and social functioning and affects emotions, cognition and behavior. Mental health status assessments can help individuals understand their own psychological status, identify potential problems in real-time and implement effective interventions to promote favorable mental health. In this study, a deep learning approach was used to construct a simple-minded and flexible model for electroencephalogram (EEG)-based mental health status assessment to construct the corresponding M4EEG model. This model is suitable not only for supervised learning tasks containing a large amount of labeled data but also for few-shot classification tasks in special cases. During execution, certain components of a pretrained transformer model are utilized as the model’s foundation. After deriving feature values from different inputs, these features are decoupled by cross-connecting them into the relation module. Finally, the correlation between the outputs and the classification results are determined by a relation score. In experiments, the Database for Emotion Analysis using Physiological Signals (DEAP) and Affective Mood and Interpersonal Goals in the School Environment (AMIGOS) datasets were partitioned into K-Shot files as the input information, and the classification results were derived from the M4EEG model. These results showed that the M4EEG model is capable of assessing mental health status through EEG, and the model can obtain results that cannot be achieved by existing models that do not apply comparable data labeling. Synthetic images facilitate stereo matching. However, synthetic images may suffer from image distortion, domain bias, and stereo mismatch, which would significantly restrict the widespread use of stereo matching models in the real world. The first goal in this paper is to synthesize real‐looking images for minimizing the domain bias between the synthesized and real images. For this purpose, sharpened disparity maps are produced from a mono real image. Then, stereo image pairs are synthesized using these imperfect disparity maps and the single real image in the proposed pipeline. Although the synthesized images are as realistic as possible, the domain styles of the synthesized images are always very different from the real images. Thus, the second goal is to enhance the domain generalization ability of the stereo matching network. For that, the feature extraction layer is replaced with a teacher–student model. Then, a constraint of binocular contrast features is imposed on the output of the model. When tested on the KITTI, ETH3D, and Middlebury datasets, the accuracy of the method outperforms traditional methods by at least 30%. Optimization of conflicting functions is of paramount importance in decision making, and real world applications frequently involve data that is uncertain or unknown, resulting in multi-objective optimization (MOO) problems of stochastic type. We study the stochastic multi-gradient (SMG) method, seen as an extension of the classical stochastic gradient method for single-objective optimization. At each iteration of the SMG method, a stochastic multi-gradient direction is calculated by solving a quadratic subproblem, and it is shown that this direction is biased even when all individual gradient estimators are unbiased. We establish rates to compute a point in the Pareto front, of order similar to what is known for stochastic gradient in both convex and strongly convex cases. The analysis handles the bias in the multi-gradient and the unknown a priori weights of the limiting Pareto point. The SMG method is framed into a Pareto-front type algorithm for calculating an approximation of the entire Pareto front. The Pareto-front SMG algorithm is capable of robustly determining Pareto fronts for a number of synthetic test problems. One can apply it to any stochastic MOO problem arising from supervised machine learning, and we report results for logistic binary classification where multiple objectives correspond to distinct-sources data groups. Multiple myeloma (MM) is the second most prevalent hematological malignancy, characterized by infiltration of the bone marrow by malignant plasma cells. Extramedullary disease (EMD) represents a more aggressive condition involving the migration of a subclone of plasma cells to paraskeletal or extraskeletal sites. Liquid biopsies could improve and speed diagnosis, as they can better capture the disease heterogeneity while lowering patients' discomfort due to minimal invasiveness. Recent studies have confirmed alterations in the proteome across various malignancies, suggesting specific changes in protein classes. In this study, we show that MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry fingerprinting of peripheral blood can differentiate between MM and primary EMD patients. We constructed a predictive model using a supervised learning method, partial least squares-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) and evaluated its generalization performance on a test dataset. The outcome of this analysis is a method that predicts specifically primary EMD with high sensitivity (86.4%), accuracy (78.4%), and specificity (72.4%). Given the simplicity of this approach and its minimally invasive character, this method provides rapid identification of primary EMD and could prove helpful in clinical practice. Background: Distinguishing between middle ear cholesteatoma and chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) is an ongoing challenge. While temporal bone computed tomography (CT) scan is highly accurate for diagnosing middle ear conditions, its specificity in discerning between cholesteatoma and CSOM is only moderate. To address this issue, we utilized trained machine learning models to enhance the specificity of temporal bone CT scan in diagnosing middle ear cholesteatoma. Our database consisted of temporal bone CT scan native images from 122 patients diagnosed with middle ear cholesteatoma and a control group of 115 patients diagnosed with CSOM, with both groups labeled based on surgical findings. We preprocessed the native images to isolate the region of interest and then utilized the Inception V3 convolutional neural network for image embedding into data vectors. Classification was performed using machine learning models including support vector machine (SVM), k-nearest neighbors (k-NN), random forest, and neural network. Statistical metrics employed to interpret the results included classification accuracy, precision, recall, F1 score, confusion matrix, area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), and FreeViz diagram. Results: Our training dataset comprised 5390 images, and the testing dataset included 125 different images. The neural network, k-NN, and SVM models demonstrated significantly higher relevance in terms of classification accuracy, precision, and recall compared to the random forest model. For instance, the F1 scores were 0.974, 0.987, and 0.897, respectively, for the former three models, in contrast to 0.661 for the random forest model. The majority of research predicted heating demand using linear regression models, but they did not give current building features enough context. Model problems such as Multicollinearity need to be checked and appropriate features must be chosen based on their significance to produce accurate load predictions and inferences. Numerous building energy efficiency features correlate with each other and with heating load in the energy efficiency dataset. The standard Ordinary Least Square regression has a problem when the dataset shows Multicollinearity. Bayesian supervised machine learning is a popular method for parameter estimation and inference when frequentist statistical assumptions fail. The prediction of the heating load as the energy efficiency output with Bayesian inference in multiple regression with a collinearity problem needs careful data analysis. The parameter estimates and hypothesis tests were significantly impacted by the Multicollinearity problem that occurred among the features in the building energy efficiency dataset. This study demonstrated several shrinkage and informative priors on likelihood in the Bayesian framework as alternative solutions or remedies to reduce the collinearity problem in multiple regression analysis. This manuscript tried to model the standard Ordinary Least Square regression and four distinct Bayesian regression models with several prior distributions using the Hamiltonian Monte Carlo algorithm in Bayesian Regression Modeling using Stan and the package used to fit linear models. Several model comparison and assessment methods were used to select the best-fit regression model for the dataset. The Bayesian regression model with weakly informative prior is the best-fitted model compared to the standard Ordinary Least Squares regression and other Bayesian regression models with shrinkage priors for collinear energy efficiency data. The numerical findings of collinearity were checked using variance inflation factor, estimates of regression coefficient and standard errors, and sensitivity of priors and likelihoods. It is suggested that applied research in science, engineering, agriculture, health, and other disciplines needs to check the Multicollinearity effect for regression modeling for better estimation and inference. Fake reviews and reviewers pose a significant challenge for online review platforms as they can mislead consumers and harm businesses' reputations. Traditional methods for detecting fake reviews rely on supervised learning techniques, which require a large amount of labelled data and are not scalable for large datasets. However, detecting fake reviews is challenging due to the uncertainty surrounding reviewer behaviour. Fake reviewers may exhibit similar behaviour patterns to legitimate reviewers, making it difficult to distinguish between them. To address this challenge, this research proposed a novel model, SUH-AIFRD, for detecting fake reviewers in online review platforms. The model uses a hybrid approach of S3SVM, SSDT, and USKMW methods to identify content, behavioural, activity, and relationship features indicative of fake reviews. Behavioural features are utilized to address the problem of reviewer behavioural uncertainty. The SUH-AIFRD model achieved high accuracy of 94.99%, with impressive precision, recall, and F1 score at 94.74%, 95.37%, and 95.05%, respectively. Cardiovascular diseases are causing more deaths across the globe. With innovations in Artificial Intelligence (AI) predicting such diseases early is very important research area. With learning based approaches that exploit knowledge from given samples, it is possible to improve disease prediction process. There are many aspects to proper healthcare such as preventing diseases with suitable diet and lifestyle, early detection of diseases if any and efficient treatment. Data is being accumulated in every domain. However, the healthcare industry is on top of the list as it provides large volumes of data pertaining to human health, diet and drug aspects. The existing literature has not shown adequate research in this direction. The Healthcare industry has an unprecedented impact on the well-being of people across the globe. In the recent observations by World Health Organization (WHO), data science approach towards disease prediction greatly complements existing Clinical Decision Support Systems (CDSSs).This research paper presents a comprehensive study on the application of data science techniques for disease prediction and drug recommendation in healthcare, focusing on a case study involving cardiovascular diseases. The primary objective of this study is to develop a robust predictive model that identifies the likelihood of cardiovascular diseases in patients, and subsequently recommends drug interventions for optimal treatment outcomes. Here we propose Disease Prediction and Drug Recommendation Framework (DPDRF). The framework is realized by defining an algorithm known as Cardio Disease Prediction and Drug Recommendation (CDP-DR). The Disease Prediction and Drug Recommendation algorithm in turn uses different supervised machine learning (ML) algorithms such as Random Forest (RF), Logistic Regression (LR), Support Vector Machine (SVM), Decision Tree (DT), Stochastic Gradient Descent (SGD), Gradient Boosting, and Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGB). Another algorithm known as Entropy and Gain based Hybrid Feature Selection (EG-HFS) is defined to leverage quality of training leading to performance enhancement of prediction models. The experimental results with cardio disease prediction as a case study revealed that the proposed framework is useful in disease prediction and drug recommendations by using different prediction models. Purpose: To determine the factors influencing the likelihood of biochemical pregnancy loss (BPL) after transfer of a euploid embryo from preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy (PGT-A) cycles. Methods: The study employed an observational, retrospective cohort design, encompassing 6020 embryos from 2879 PGT-A cycles conducted between February 2013 and September 2021. Trophectoderm biopsies in day 5 (D5) or day 6 (D6) blastocysts were analyzed by next generation sequencing (NGS). Only single embryo transfers (SET) were considered, totaling 1161 transfers. Of these, 49.9% resulted in positive pregnancy tests, with 18.3% experiencing BPL. To establish a predictive model for BPL, both classical statistical methods and five different supervised classification machine learning algorithms were used. A total of forty-seven factors were incorporated as predictor variables in the machine learning models. Results: Throughout the optimization process for each model, various performance metrics were computed. Random Forest model emerged as the best model, boasting the highest area under the ROC curve (AUC) value of 0.913, alongside an accuracy of 0.830, positive predictive value of 0.857, and negative predictive value of 0.807. For the selected model, SHAP (SHapley Additive exPlanations) values were determined for each of the variables to establish which had the best predictive ability. Notably, variables pertaining to embryo biopsy demonstrated the greatest predictive capacity, followed by factors associated with ovarian stimulation (COS), maternal age, and paternal age. Conclusions: The Random Forest model had a higher predictive power for identifying BPL occurrences in PGT-A cycles. Specifically, variables associated with the embryo biopsy procedure (biopsy day, number of biopsied embryos, and number of biopsied cells) and ovarian stimulation (number of oocytes retrieved and duration of stimulation), exhibited the strongest predictive power. In this paper, we introduce a novel approach for defect detection in hammering inspections using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). Despite the promising application of UAVs for inspecting hard-to-reach structures, like bridges, their efficiency is often compromised by the significant ego noise produced by their motor-propeller systems. This noise complicates the discrimination between healthy and defective hammering sounds. In previous research, methods to improve robustness through supervised learning have been proposed; however, these methods require the labeling of hammering sounds by skilled inspectors to train the discrimination model. To overcome this problem, we propose an ego-noise reduction method based on propeller vibrations. By reducing ego noise and thereby making the characteristics of hammering sound more dramatically clear, we enable unsupervised defect detection amidst ego noise. Our experiments with concrete specimens demonstrate that our technique achieves defect detection with an accuracy on par with the supervised method. The proposed method proves especially beneficial for hammering inspections, in which the domain gap–the variability in acoustic signatures of hammering sounds caused by differences in concrete mix ratios and curing conditions from one site to another–presents a significant challenge. Background: In recent years, there has been a rapid increase in the number of microbial genomes reconstructed through shotgun sequencing, and obtained by newly developed approaches including metagenomic binning and single-cell sequencing. However, our ability to functionally characterize these genomes by experimental assays is orders of magnitude less efficient. Consequently, there is a pressing need for the development of swift and automated strategies for the functional classification of microbial genomes. Results: The present work leverages a suite of supervised machine learning algorithms to establish a range of 86 metabolic and other ecological functions, such as methanotrophy and plastic degradation, starting from widely obtainable microbial genome annotations. Tests performed on independent datasets demonstrated robust performance across complete, fragmented, and incomplete genomes above a 70% completeness level for most of the considered functions. Application of the algorithms to the Biogas Microbiome database yielded predictions broadly consistent with current biological knowledge and correctly detecting functionally-related nuances of archaeal genomes. Finally, a case study focused on acetoclastic methanogenesis demonstrated how the developed machine learning models can be refined or expanded with models describing novel functions of interest. Conclusions: The resulting tool, MICROPHERRET, incorporates a total of 86 models, one for each tested functional class, and can be applied to high-quality microbial genomes as well as to low-quality genomes derived from metagenomics and single-cell sequencing. Plasmodium parasites cause Malaria disease, which remains a significant threat to global health, affecting 200 million people and causing 400,000 deaths yearly. Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax remain the two main malaria species affecting humans. Identifying the malaria disease in blood smears requires years of expertise, even for highly trained specialists. Literature studies have been coping with the automatic identification and classification of malaria. However, several points must be addressed and investigated so these automatic methods can be used clinically in a Computer-aided Diagnosis (CAD) scenario. In this work, we assess the transfer learning approach by using well-known pre-trained deep learning architectures. We considered a database with 6222 Region of Interest (ROI), of which 6002 are from the Broad Bioimage Benchmark Collection (BBBC), and 220 were acquired locally by us at Fundação Oswaldo Cruz (FIOCRUZ) in Porto Velho Velho, Rondônia—Brazil, which is part of the legal Amazon. We exhaustively cross-validated the dataset using 100 distinct partitions with 80% train and 20% test for each considering circular ROIs (rough segmentation). Our experimental results show that DenseNet201 has a potential to identify Plasmodium parasites in ROIs (infected or uninfected) of microscopic images, achieving 99.41% AUC with a fast processing time. We further validated our results, showing that DenseNet201 was significantly better (99% confidence interval) than the other networks considered in the experiment. Our results support claiming that transfer learning with texture features potentially differentiates subjects with malaria, spotting those with Plasmodium even in Leukocytes images, which is a challenge. In Future work, we intend scale our approach by adding more data and developing a friendly user interface for CAD use. We aim at aiding the worldwide population and our local natives living nearby the legal Amazon's rivers. We used these data to train several networks and then applied them to real data in the form of training to verify the ability to identify Plasmodium in this new set. In our approach, we achieved in all approaches nothing less than 96% accuracy and in one case 99.41% accuracy. Thus, we fully demonstrate the possibility of using the methodology to develop a user-friendly interface to assist health agents in performing effective and efficient diagnosis even in hard-to-reach regions of our Amazon region. Direct training of Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs) on neuromorphic hardware has the potential to significantly reduce the energy consumption of artificial neural network training. SNNs trained with Spike Timing-Dependent Plasticity (STDP) benefit from gradient-free and unsupervised local learning, which can be easily implemented on ultra-low-power neuromorphic hardware. However, classification tasks cannot be performed solely with unsupervised STDP. In this paper, we propose Stabilized Supervised STDP (S2-STDP), a supervised STDP learning rule to train the classification layer of an SNN equipped with unsupervised STDP for feature extraction. S2-STDP integrates error-modulated weight updates that align neuron spikes with desired timestamps derived from the average firing time within the layer. Then, we introduce a training architecture called Paired Competing Neurons (PCN) to further enhance the learning capabilities of our classification layer trained with S2-STDP. PCN associates each class with paired neurons and encourages neuron specialization toward target or non-target samples through intra-class competition. We evaluate our methods on image recognition datasets, including MNIST, Fashion-MNIST, and CIFAR10. Results show that our methods outperform state-of-the-art supervised STDP learning rules, for comparable architectures and numbers of neurons. Further analysis demonstrates that the use of PCN enhances the performance of S2-STDP, regardless of the hyperparameter set and without introducing any additional hyperparameters. In order to increase the likelihood of obtaining treatment and achieving a complete recovery, early illness identification and diagnosis are crucial. Artificial intelligence is helpful with this process by allowing us to rapidly start the necessary protocol for treatment in the early stages of disease development. Artificial intelligence is a major contributor to the improvement of medical treatment for patients. In order to prevent and foresee this problem on the individual, family, and generational levels, Monitoring the patient's therapy and recovery is crucial. This study's objective is to outline a non-invasive method for using mammograms to detect breast abnormalities, classify breast disorders, and identify cancerous or benign tumor tissue in the breast. We used classification models on a dataset that has been pre-processed so that the number of samples is balanced, unlike previous work on the same dataset. Identifying cancerous or benign breast tissue requires the use of supervised learning techniques and algorithms, such as random forest (RF) and decision tree (DT) classifiers, to examine up to thirty features, such as breast size, mass, diameter, circumference, and the nature of the tumor (solid or cystic). To ascertain if the tissue is malignant or benign, the examination's findings are employed. These features are mostly what determines how effectively anything may be categorized. Nonlinear optical crystals (NLO) are a key class of functional materials in the field of laser technology due to their excellent frequency conversion effects and physical–chemical stability. The research aims to find NLO crystals with superior stability by predicting their formation energy. In this study, only compositional information is utilized as input features and models are constructed using regression algorithms such as Random Forest Regression (RFR), Support Vector Regression (SVR), and Gradient Boosting Regression (GBR). Notably, the GBR model exhibited outstanding predictive performance, with an R2 value of 0.935 and root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.248 eV per atom. Additionally, SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) analysis is employed to elucidate the fundamental principles behind the predictions by assessing the contribution of each feature to the formation energy. To validate the reliability of the models, first‐principles calculations are conducted to predict the formation energy of materials of GaP, ZnGeP2, and CdSiP2. With increasing wafer sizes and diversifying die patterns, automated optical inspection (AOI) is progressively replacing traditional visual inspection (VI) for wafer defect detection. Yet, the defect classification efficacy of current AOI systems in our case company is not optimal. This limitation is due to the algorithms' reliance on expertly designed features, reducing adaptability across various product models. Additionally, the limited time available for operators to annotate defect samples restricts learning potential. Our study introduces a novel hybrid self-training algorithm, leveraging semi-supervised learning that integrates pseudo-labeling, noisy student, curriculum labeling, and the Taguchi method. This approach enables classifiers to autonomously integrate information from unlabeled data, bypassing the need for feature extraction, even with scarcely labeled data. Our experiments on a small-scale set show that with 25% and 50% labeled data, the method achieves over 92% accuracy. Remarkably, with only 10% labeled data, our hybrid method surpasses the supervised DenseNet classifier by over 20%, achieving more than 82% accuracy. On a large-scale set, the hybrid method consistently outperforms other approaches, achieving up to 88.75%, 86.31%, and 83.61% accuracy with 50%, 25%, and 10% labeled data. Deep neural networks (DNNs) have achieved breakthrough progress in various fields, largely owing to the support of large-scale datasets with manually annotated labels. However, obtaining such datasets is costly and time-consuming, making high-quality annotation a challenging task. In this work, we propose an improved noisy sample selection method, termed "sample selection framework", based on a mixup loss and recalibration strategy (SMR). This framework enhances the robustness and generalization abilities of models. First, we introduce a robust mixup loss function to pre-train two models with identical structures separately. This approach avoids additional hyperparameter adjustments and reduces the need for prior knowledge of noise types. Additionally, we use a Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) to divide the entire training set into labeled and unlabeled subsets, followed by robust training using semi-supervised learning (SSL) techniques. Furthermore, we propose a recalibration strategy based on cross-entropy (CE) loss to prevent the models from converging to local optima during the SSL process, thus further improving performance. Ablation experiments on CIFAR-10 with 50% symmetric noise and 40% asymmetric noise demonstrate that the two modules introduced in this paper improve the accuracy of the baseline (i.e., DivideMix) by 1.5% and 0.5%, respectively. Moreover, the experimental results on multiple benchmark datasets demonstrate that our proposed method effectively mitigates the impact of noisy labels and significantly enhances the performance of DNNs on noisy datasets. Hepatic steatosis, characterized by excess fat in the liver, is the main reason for discarding livers intended for transplantation due to its association with increased postoperative complications. The current gold standard for evaluating hepatic steatosis is liver biopsy, which, despite its accuracy, is invasive, costly, slow, and not always feasible during liver procurement. Consequently, surgeons often rely on subjective visual assessments based on the liver's colour and texture, which are prone to errors and heavily depend on the surgeon's experience. The aim of this study was to develop and validate a simple, rapid, and accurate method for detecting steatosis in donor livers to improve the decision-making process during liver procurement. We developed LiverColor, a co-designed software platform that integrates image analysis and machine learning to classify a liver graft into valid or non-valid according to its steatosis level. We utilized an in-house dataset of 192 cases to develop and validate the classification models. Colour and texture features were extracted from liver photographs, and graft classification was performed using supervised machine learning techniques (random forests and support vector machine). The performance of the algorithm was compared against biopsy results and surgeons' classifications. Usability was also assessed in simulated and real clinical settings using the Mobile Health App Usability Questionnaire. The predictive models demonstrated an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.82, with an accuracy of 85%, significantly surpassing the accuracy of visual inspections by surgeons. Experienced surgeons rated the platform positively, appreciating not only the hepatic steatosis assessment but also the dashboarding functionalities for summarising and displaying procurement-related data. The results indicate that image analysis coupled with machine learning can effectively and safely identify valid livers during procurement. This paper addresses the further development and optimization of a modeling- and machine learning-based framework for early fault detection and diagnosis in induction motors. The goal behind the multi-level framework is to provide a pragmatic and practical approach for the autonomous monitoring of electrical machines in various industrial applications. The main contributions of this paper include the elimination of a fingerprint measurement in the processing of the framework and the development of a generalized model for fault detection and diagnosis. These aspects allow the training of neural networks with a simulated data set before even knowing the specific induction motor to be monitored. The pre-trained feed-forward neural networks enable the detection of several electrical and mechanical faults in a real induction motor with an overall accuracy of 99.56%. Another main contribution is the extension of the methodology to a larger operating range. As a result, various faults in a real induction motor can be detected under different load conditions with accuracies of over 92%. The measurement of the target azimuth angle using forward-looking radar (FLR) is widely applied in unmanned systems, such as obstacle avoidance and tracking applications. This paper proposes a semi-supervised support vector regression (SVR) method to solve the problem of small sample learning of the target angle with FLR. This method utilizes function approximation to solve the problem of estimating the target angle. First, SVR is used to construct the function mapping relationship between the echo and the target angle in beamspace. Next, by adding manifold constraints to the loss function, supervised learning is extended to semi-supervised learning, aiming to improve the small sample adaptation ability. This framework supports updating the angle estimating function with continuously increasing unlabeled samples during the FLR scanning process. The numerical simulation results show that the new technology has better performance than model-based methods and fully supervised methods, especially under limited conditions such as signal-to-noise ratio and number of training samples. Ship detection from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery is crucial for various fields in real-world applications. Numerous deep learning-based detectors have been investigated for SAR ship detection, which requires a substantial amount of labeled data for training. However, SAR data annotation is time-consuming and demands specialized expertise, resulting in deep learning-based SAR ship detectors struggling due to a lack of annotations. With limited labeled data, semi-supervised learning is a popular approach for boosting detection performance by excavating valuable information from unlabeled data. In this paper, a semi-supervised SAR ship detection network is proposed, termed a Multi-Teacher Dempster-Shafer Evidence Fusion Net-work (MTDSEFN). The MTDSEFN is an enhanced framework based on the basic teacher–student skeleton frame, comprising two branches: the Teacher Group (TG) and the Agency Teacher (AT). The TG utilizes multiple teachers to generate pseudo-labels for different augmentation versions of unlabeled samples, which are then refined to obtain high-quality pseudo-labels by using Dempster-Shafer (D-S) fusion. The AT not only serves to deliver weights of its own teacher to the TG at the end of each epoch but also updates its own weights after each iteration, enabling the model to effectively learn rich information from unlabeled data. The combination of TG and AT guarantees both reliable pseudo-label generation and a comprehensive diversity of learning information from numerous unlabeled samples. Cervical cancer (CC) is affecting women predominantly, and early diagnosis could cure this cancer. This study aims to design and develop an effective deep learning-based classification model to detect early CC stages using clinical data. The proposed method is a combination of an unsupervised deep learning and a supervised neural network, i.e. sparse stacked autoencoder (SSAE) and fuzzy adaptive resonance theory MAP (FAM), respectively, and is denoted as SSAE-FAM. Specifically, SSAE is applied to tackle the data sparsity problem. It extracts the representative features from a data set through feature transformation. The transformed features are then classified by FAM. In this study, a CC data set obtained from the University of California Irvine (UCI) machine learning repository is utilised for evaluation. Owing to missing data in the original CC data set, two data sets are generated from the original CC data samples using two data preprocessing techniques. Both generated CC data sets with four target classes (i.e. Schiller, Cytology, Biopsy, and Hinselmann) are evaluated as four independent binary-class problems. We improve the classification performance of FAM by mitigating the data sparsity problem. Based on a series of experimental studies, SSAE-FAM outperforms other state-of-art methods by achieving 99.47%, 99.34%, 99.48%, and 99.81% mean accuracy rates, respectively, with the first CC data set, and 99.74%, 99.86%, 99.77%, and 99.80% mean accuracy rates, respectively, with the second CC data set. This research aimed to use a computational approach to aid infection prevention strategies during the predesign phase of healthcare environment planning. The objective of this study was to decompose and analyze health system catchment area 'outside design basis factors' such as demographic, public health, and environmental characteristics that may contribute to infection causing pathogen spread in healthcare environments using state of Florida data as a context for analysis. Supervised Machine Learning methodologies were used to determine relationships between Socioecological System (SES) factors and observed incidence rates of specific Hospital Acquired Infections (HAI). Results of the analysis suggest that relevant regional population SES factors, when included as independent variables, can forecast the potential co-occurrence of specific types of HAI in regional health system service areas. Outcomes of the analysis suggest that demographic and regional characteristics are significantly related to the predictive incidence of Antimicrobial-resistant infections in healthcare settings in Florida Agency for Healthcare Administration (ACHA) regions. This paper proposes a scheme for predicting ground reaction force (GRF) and center of pressure (CoP) using low-cost FSR sensors. GRF and CoP data are commonly collected from smart insoles to analyze the wearer's gait and diagnose balance issues. This approach can be utilized to improve a user's rehabilitation process and enable customized treatment plans for patients with specific diseases, making it a useful technology in many fields. However, the conventional measuring equipment for directly monitoring GRF and CoP values, such as F-Scan, is expensive, posing a challenge to commercialization in the industry. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a technology to predict relevant indicators using only low-cost Force Sensing Resistor (FSR) sensors instead of expensive equipment. In this study, data were collected from subjects simultaneously wearing a low-cost FSR Sensor and an F-Scan device, and the relationship between the collected data sets was analyzed using supervised learning techniques. Using the proposed technique, an artificial neural network was constructed that can derive a predicted value close to the actual F-Scan values using only the data from the FSR Sensor. In this process, GRF and CoP were calculated using six virtual forces instead of the pressure value of the entire sole. It was verified through various simulations that it is possible to achieve an improved prediction accuracy of more than 30% when using the proposed technique compared to conventional prediction techniques. The last decade witnessed a spectacular rise in the volume of available textual data. With this new abundance came the question of how to analyze it. In the social sciences, scholars mostly resorted to two well-established approaches, human annotation on sampled data on the one hand (either performed by the researcher, or outsourced to microworkers), and quantitative methods on the other. Each approach has its own merits - a potentially very fine-grained analysis for the former, a very scalable one for the latter - but the combination of these two properties has not yielded highly accurate results so far. Leveraging recent advances in sequential transfer learning, we demonstrate via an experiment that an expert can train a precise, efficient automatic classifier in a very limited amount of time. We also show that, under certain conditions, expert-trained models produce better annotations than humans themselves. We demonstrate these points using a classic research question in the sociology of journalism, the rise of a "horse race" coverage of politics. Automated image analysis has received increasing attention in social scientific research, yet existing scholarship has mostly covered the application of supervised learning to classify images into predefined categories. This study focuses on the task of unsupervised image clustering, which aims to automatically discover categories from unlabelled image data. We first review the steps to perform image clustering and then focus on one key challenge in this task—finding intermediate representations of images. We present several methods of extracting intermediate image representations, including the bag-of-visual-words model, self-supervised learning, and transfer learning (in particular, feature extraction with pretrained models). We compare these methods using various visual datasets, including images related to protests in China from Weibo, images about climate change on Instagram, and profile images of the Russian Internet Research Agency on Twitter. In addition, we propose a systematic way to interpret and validate clustering solutions. Results show that transfer learning significantly outperforms the other methods. Passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) – autonomously recording ambient sound – could dramatically increase the scale and robustness of species monitoring in rainforest ecosystems. PAM generates large volumes of data that require automated methods of target species detection. Species-specific recognisers, which often use supervised machine learning, can achieve this goal. However, they require a large training dataset of target and non-target signals, which is time-consuming and challenging to create. Unfortunately, very little information about creating training datasets for supervised machine learning recognisers is available, especially for tropical ecosystems. Here, we show an iterative approach to creating a training dataset that improved recogniser precision from 0.12 to 0.55. By sampling background noise using an initial small recogniser, we can address one of the significant challenges of training dataset creation in acoustically diverse environments. Our work demonstrates that recognisers will likely fail in real-world settings unless the training dataset size is large enough and sufficiently representative of the ambient soundscape. We outline a workflow that can provide users with an accessible way to create a species-specific PAM recogniser that addresses these issues for tropical rainforest environments. The navigational accuracy of sea animals and trans-ocean birds provides inspiration in using geo-magnetic field (GMF) for realizing strategic truly autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV) capable of determining their absolute position on earth, without the aid of ship-referenced acoustic baseline systems. Supervised Machine Learning algorithms are applied on the GMF intensity data obtained from NOAA World Magnetic Model for a 900 km2 within the Indian mineral exploratory area in the Central Indian Ocean, with a resolution of 50 m, considering the sensitivity of commercially available magnetometers. It is identified that, for AUVs equipped with magnetometers with a detection sensitivity of 0.1 nT, the supervisory random forest regression and decision tree algorithm trained with priori GMF data, could provide trajectory guidance to AUVs with an absolute mean position accuracy in 2D plane, with reference to the last known position from Integrated Navigation system aided initially with GPS and with acoustic positioning in underwater.
