1. Activating Joy through Culturally and Historically Responsive Read-Alouds

Abstract

Activating joy is a rigorous and serious pursuit in literacy education. In this article, we guide educators through the framework of culturally and historically responsive education and its five pursuits: identity, skills, intellect, criticality, and joy. Our focus is on the fifth pursuit -joy-- and we support elementary school teachers in pursuing joy during read-aloud in their classrooms. As we advocate for activating joy during read-aloud, we ask educators to consider joy and its relationship to justice and humanity. We suggest that to activate joy, educators must start with stories that center and celebrate our young people, their lived experiences, and their histories from a place of self-empowerment. We offer practical examples of culturally and historically responsive read-alouds that center five types of joy.

Abstract

Background: Acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) is a severe form of leukemia marked by an excess of lymphoblasts or lymphocytes in the bone marrow and peripheral circulation. While hepatitis is a well-known consequence of acute lymphoblastic leukemia treatment, the link between aberrant liver biochemistry and early leukemia presentation is poorly understood. The aim of this study is to assess the state of liver function in those with acute leukemia by monitoring the activities of alkaline phosphatase (ALP), aspartate aminotransferase (AST) , and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) , levels of bilirubin, as well as assessing the impact of ALL on other variables including calcium and phosphorus. Methods: In this research, 40 ALL patients and a control group of 40 healthy individuals were included in the study. The functioning of the liver was examined by measuring the activities of ALT, AST, ALP, and bilirubin levels in blood samples. Besides that, measuring serum calcium and phosphorus levels. Results: In accordance with the findings, there were substantial differences in ALT, AST, ALP, and bilirubin between the control and patient groups. In addition, there were a significant differences between patients and controls regarding the serum content of calcium and phosphorus. Conclusions: A liver function test should be done on leukemia patients before treatment, according to this study, which found that blood ALT, AST, ALP, and bilirubin levels are high at the time of acute leukemia diagnosis.

Abstract

Due to, the great electronic development, which reinforced the need to define people's identities, different methods, and databases to identification people's identities have emerged. In this paper, we compare the results of two texture analysis methods: Local Binary Pattern (LBP) and Local Ternary Pattern (LTP). The comparison based on comparing the extracting facial texture features of 40 and 401 subjects taken from ORL and UFI databases respectively. As well, the comparison has taken in the account using three distance measurements such as; Manhattan Distance (MD), Euclidean Distance (ED), and Cosine Distance (CD). Where the maximum accuracy of the LBP method (99.23%) is obtained with a Manhattan and ORL database, while the LTP method attained (98.76%) using the same distance and database. While, the facial database of UFI shows low quality, which is satisfied 75.98% and 73.82% recognition rates using LBP and LTP respectively with Manhattan distance.

Abstract

References and citations form a basis for scientific research and creation/discovery of knowledge. However literature reviews had indicated that many errors are present in scholarly papers published in journals and conferences as well as in books and articles. Furthermore, course works of students studying in higher education institutions contain mistakes in references lists and in-text citations. Problems that stem from these inaccuracies are multifarious and range from the act of plagiarism, not acknowledging the source, problems in information access and retrieval as well as causing inaccuracies in ranking articles and journals, thus hindering the growth of knowledge. Based on the importance of this global issue this research was initiated. The first objective of our research was to determine root causes for the presence of mistakes and inadequacies in references and citations within the academic arena. We chose the academic arena because they are the training grounds for education and scientific research. Furthermore, through this research we sought a unique practical solution for this issue. In order to conduct a thorough and comprehensive investigation into the above mentioned problems, and to achieve the aim of proposing a suitable solution, we divided our research work into three main phases. First phase was the investigative phase. During this phase a thorough literature review was conducted. As a result of this review, research questions were formed. Both quantitative and qualitative methods were adopted to investigate the causes of erroneous references and citations. Triangulation research methodology was used to get reliable and comprehensive information. Data received through these methods were analyzed and core issues such as inadequate feedback and training in referencing task were highlighted. In the second phase, termed as solution phase, a pedagogical framework was proposed to resolve issues that were reported during the investigative phase. A conceptual framework was built on the principles of Learning theories and spaced repetition theory. To evaluate this framework experiments were conducted. This was done in the third and final phase of the research which was termed as evaluation phase. Two types of experiments were conducted, first type was in a traditional classroom environment and the second type of experiment was with students who chose to work independently (without tutors). Data were collected and analyzed from these experiments using both quantitative methods and qualitative methods and were analyzed. This research provides insight into causes of errors within referencing tasks of students in higher education. It Indicates that reform in the pedagogy for teaching this skill is needed. Furthermore a unique pedagogy is presented. Results from experiments have indicated that through the proposed operational model improvements of referencing skills have been seen.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the vitamin c protective influence against oxidative stress, liver and kidney destructions made by diethylene glycol in rabbit model. Eighteen healthy male rabbits were grouped into 3 classes. Control group: without any treatment. DEG group were treated with 40 mg /kg /day of DEG for 14 days while DEG with vitamin C group with 40 mg /kg /day of DEG with 10mg /kg/day of vitamin C for 14 days. All animals were euthanized at day 14 of the study. Venous blood samples (5ml) were collected from rabbits via jugular vein and serum samples were isolated and kept at -20 ˚C till time of analysis. Serum analysis was done by colorimetric Assay kit for total antioxidant capacity (TAC). Tissue samples from liver and kidneys were isolated, pigmented by hematoxylin and eosin (H & E) pigments and investigated under a light microscope for histopathological changes. Results: The TAC in the treatment group was significantly reduced at 14th day of study when compared to the other groups. While non- significant differences were found between control and treatment with vitamin C groups.

Abstract

Objetivo: Evaluar los niveles séricos de la enzima adenosin-deaminasa (ADA) en pacientes gestantes normales y en pacientes con trastornos hipertensivos del embarazo, para determinar su relación con la gravedad del trastorno hipertensivo y con los niveles séricos de marcadores bioquímicos. Método: Se evaluaron pacientes con preeclampsia leve, preeclampsia grave, hipertensión gestacional y embarazadas sanas (n=10 por cada grupo). Se determinaron los niveles de ADA, ácido úrico, creatinina, amonio y enzimas hepáticas. Resultados: Se detectó una elevación en los niveles séricos de ADA en pacientes con preeclampsia y con hipertensión gestacional, en comparación con aquellas que cursaron con un embarazo normal. Los niveles ADA se correlacionaron positivamente con los niveles de ácido úrico y creatinina, más no con la severidad clínica. A su vez los niveles de ácido úrico se asociaron con la creatinina sérica y con la severidad clínica de los trastornos hipertensivos. Se encontró un incremento en los niveles de amonio en los pacientes con preeclampsia, el cual no se correlacionó con los otros marcadores bioquímicos, mientras que los niveles de TGO, TGP y LDH se encontraron significativamente elevados en la preeclampsia grave. Conclusión: Este estudio permite relacionar la actividad de ADA con los trastornos hipertensivos del embarazo, los niveles elevados de amonio con la preeclampsia y los niveles de ácido úrico, TGO, TGP y LDH con la severidad de los trastornos hipertensivos.Objective: To evaluate serum levels of the enzyme adenosine deaminase (ADA) in normal pregnant and patients with hypertensive disorders induced by pregnancy, in order to determine their relationship with the severity of the hypertensive disorder and with serum biochemical markers. Method: We evaluated patients with mild preeclampsia, severe preeclampsia, gestational hypertension and healthy pregnancy (n=10 per group). We determined the serum levels of ADA, uric acid, creatinine, ammonia and liver enzymes. Results: In patients with preeclampsia and gestational hypertension we detected a rise in serum ADA as compared with those who had undergone a normal pregnancy. ADA levels were positively correlated with uric acid and creatinine serum levels, but not with clinical severity. Uric acid levels were associated with serum creatinine and the clinical severity of hypertensive disorders. We also found an increase in ammonia levels in patients with preeclampsia, which did not correlate with other biochemical markers, while the levels of SGOT, SGPT, and LDH were significantly elevated in severe preeclampsia. Conclusion: This study establishes a link between the activity of ADA with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, high levels of ammonium with preeclampsia and uric acid, SGOT, SGPT and LDH levels with the severity of hypertensive disorders.

Abstract

The cytotoxic effect of zinc oxide nanoparticles against mice mammary adenocarcenoma cells was carried out in vitro. The used nanoparticles were synthesized by pulsed laser ablation in liquid methods; the used liquid was deionized water. Colloidal suspension of zinc oxide nanoparticles was synthesized by Q-switched Nd: YAG pulse laser device (1064 nm) laser energy was 600 mJ and pulse duration was 10 nanosecond. High purity metallic zinc plate was submerged in 10 ml deionized water in 50 ml glass baker and ablated with 1000 pulse at room temperature. The nanospecificities of the synthesized nanoparticle colloidal were characterized with UV-Vis scanning spectrophotometer. Atomic force microscope was used to determine the particle size distribution and particles shape. The ZnO crestless formation was characterized by X-ray diffraction. Mice mammary adenocarcenoma cells was treated with 25, 50, 100 ppm of ZnO nanoparticles. Results indicated a significant toxicity of the ZnO nanoparticles toward cancer cells, this toxicity correlated directly with ZnO nanoparticles elevated concentrations. These result need to be further investigated and the molecular mechanism of ZnO nanoparticles effect should be more clarify.

Abstract

Purpose Short Neck is a term used by anesthesiologists to describe one of the risk factors for difficult airway management. However, the term Short Neck is very subjective and has not been standardized. We attempt to quantify Short Neck.Methods A pilot prospective single blinded study was conducted at Hamad General Hospital, Doha, Qatar between March 2018 and October 2018. 97 adult patients scheduled for elective surgery under general anesthesia were recruited. Measurements of airway assessment, including neck length, were documented prior to anesthesia. The operators (anesthesiologists) were blinded. Intubation Difficulty Scale was used. All data were documented and analysed afterwards. Patients were of three groups according to Intubation Difficulty Scale (IDS): Group A: IDS 0, Group B: IDS >0 - ≤5 and Group C: IDS >5.Results Five patients (5.2%) with intubation difficulty score >5 have a mean neck length 7.6 cm. Short Neck was found to have a significant p value 0.022 within the three groups.Conclusions Patient's features relevant to airway assessment are rather difficult to quantify. This is the first reported attempt to obtain an objective value for Short Neck in routine airway assessment.

The comparison based on comparing the extracting facial texture features of 40,401 and 10 subjects taken from ORL, UFI and Self-Created databases respectively. As well, the comparison has taken in the account using three distance measurements such as; Manhattan Distance (MD), Euclidean Distance (ED), and Cosine Distance (CD). Where the maximum accuracy of the LBP method (99.23%) is obtained with a Manhattan and ORL database as standard database, while the LTP method attained (98.76%) using the same distance and database. While, the facial database of UFI shows low quality, which is satisfied 75.98% and 73.82% recognition rates using LBP and LTP respectively with Manhattan distance. Hereby, the LBP based biometric system performs excellence recognition accuracy even with difficult face images that contain different expressions, different poses, and varied illumination like the UFI dataset.

Abstract

The clear role of leptin hormone in the endocrinology area has been proved after it is discovery, the adipocytokine, leptin is secreted from adipose tissue, leptin hormone considered to play an important role in obesity and it is related to endocrine dysfunction like infertility. The aim of the study is to evaluate serum leptin levels, sex hormones and lipid profile in infertile females with an unknown cause of infertility and to be compared with healthy fertile females of the same age and body mass index (BMI) and to study the correlation of leptin with the biochemical parameters including sex hormones and lipid profile in females of unknown cause of infertility. The present study were included 20 fertile females and 38 infertile females, they were aged and body mass index-matched. In both groups fasting serum leptin and triglyceride( TG), fasting total serum cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c), prolactin, testosterone, estrogen, luteinizing hormones(LH), follicular stimulating hormones (FSH) were measured. The infertile females found to have a highly significant difference in total serum cholesterol (p value0.002), with a significant difference higher level of leptin (p-value 0.01), LDL (p-value 0.04), testosterone (p-value 0.02), and luteinizing hormones(LH) (p-value 0.03), with a no significant difference in the prolactin, follicular stimulating hormones (FSH), estrogen, HDL-c and triglyceride when compared to the fertile group. Correlation between serum leptin level and biochemical parameters in both groups show no significant correlation between leptin hormone and prolactin, testosterone, estrogen, luteinizing hormones (LH) and follicular stimulating hormones(FSH). But a negative correlation between serum leptin with the fasting total serum cholesterol (TC) (HDL-c) and (LDL-c) in the fertile group but a positive correlation with (TG). In the infertile group, a positive correlation between serum leptin and fasting total serum cholesterol (TC), (TG), and (LDL-c) with a significant negative correlation with (HDL-c) was reported. In conclusion, the present study concluded that serum leptin may have a role in the female infertility of unknown cause as leptin is found to be elevated in these infertile females despite the matching in their body mass index, so further study is advised to confirm this theory. Abstract

Objective: Self-perceived health status may be helpful in identifying patients at high risk for adverse outcomes. The Euro Heart Survey on Coronary Revascularization (EHS-CR) provided an opportunity to explore whether impaired health status was a predictor of 1-year mortality in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) undergoing angiographic procedures. Methods: Data from the EHS-CR that included 5619 patients from 31 member countries of the European Society of Cardiology were used. Inclusion criteria for the current study were completion of a self-report measure of health status, the EuroQol Questionnaire (EQ-5D) at discharge and information on 1-year follow-up, resulting in a study population of 3786 patients. Results: The 1-year mortality was 3.2% (n = 120). Survivors reported fewer problems on the five dimensions of the EQ-5D as compared with non-survivors. Abstract

Aims: Revascularization in patients with coronary artery disease changed over the last two decades, favouring the number of patients treated by means of percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI) when compared with coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). Many randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have been performed to compare these two competing revascularization techniques. Because of the strict enrolment criteria of RCTs in which highly selected patients are recruited, the applicability of the results may be limited in clinical practice. The current study evaluates to what extent patients in clinical practice were similar to those who participated in RCTs comparing PCI with CABG. Methods and results: Clinical characteristics and 1-year outcome of 4713 patients enrolled in the Euro Heart Survey on Coronary Revascularization were compared with 8647 patients who participated in 14 major RCTs, comparing PCI with CABG. In addition, we analysed which proportion of survey patients would have disqualified for trial participation (n = 3033, 64%), aiming at identifying differences between trial-eligible and trial-ineligible survey patients. In general, important differences were observed between trial participants and survey patients. Patients in clinical practice were older, more often had comorbid conditions, single-vessel disease, and left main stem stenosis when compared with trial participants. Almost identical differences were observed between trial-eligible and trial-ineligible survey patients. In clinical practice, PCI was the treatment of choice, even in patients who were trial-ineligible (46% PCI, 26% CABG, 28% medical). PCI remained the preferred treatment option in patients with multi-vessel disease (57% in trial-eligible and 40% in trial-ineligible patients, respectively, P < 0.001); yet, the risk profile of patients treated by PCI was better than that for patients treated either by CABG or by medical therapy. In the RCTs, there was no mortality difference between PCI and CABG. In clinical practice, however, we observed 1-year unadjusted survival benefit for PCI vs. CABG (2.9 vs. 5.4%, P < 0.001). Survival benefit was only observed in trial-ineligible patients (3.3 vs. 6.2%, P < 0.001). Conclusion: Many patients in clinical practice were not represented in RCTs. Moreover, only 36% of these patients were considered eligible for participating in a trial comparing PCI with CABG. We demonstrated that RCTs included younger patients with a better cardiovascular risk profile when compared with patients in everyday clinical practice. This study highlights the disparity between patients in clinical practice and patients in whom the studies that provide the evidence for treatment guidelines are performed. © The European Society of Cardiology 2006. Abstract

Objetivo: Evaluar los niveles séricos de la enzima adenosin-deaminasa (ADA) en pacientes gestantes normales y en pacientes con trastornos hipertensivos del embarazo, para determinar su relación con la gravedad del trastorno hipertensivo y con los niveles séricos de marcadores bioquímicos. Método: Se evaluaron pacientes con preeclampsia leve, preeclampsia grave, hipertensión gestacional y embarazadas sanas (n=10 por cada grupo). Se determinaron los niveles de ADA, ácido úrico, creatinina, amonio y enzimas hepáticas. Resultados: Se detectó una elevación en los niveles séricos de ADA en pacientes con preeclampsia y con hipertensión gestacional, en comparación con aquellas que cursaron con un embarazo normal. Los niveles ADA se correlacionaron positivamente con los niveles de ácido úrico y creatinina, más no con la severidad clínica. A su vez los niveles de ácido úrico se asociaron con la creatinina sérica y con la severidad clínica de los trastornos hipertensivos. Se encontró un incremento en los niveles de amonio en los pacientes con preeclampsia, el cual no se correlacionó con los otros marcadores bioquímicos, mientras que los niveles de TGO, TGP y LDH se encontraron significativamente elevados en la preeclampsia grave. Conclusión: Este estudio permite relacionar la actividad de ADA con los trastornos hipertensivos del embarazo, los niveles elevados de amonio con la preeclampsia y los niveles de ácido úrico, TGO, TGP y LDH con la severidad de los trastornos hipertensivos. Objective: To evaluate serum levels of the enzyme adenosine deaminase (ADA) in normal pregnant and patients with hypertensive disorders induced by pregnancy, in order to determine their relationship with the severity of the hypertensive disorder and with serum biochemical markers. Method: We evaluated patients with mild preeclampsia, severe preeclampsia, gestational hypertension and healthy pregnancy (n=10 per group). We determined the serum levels of ADA, uric acid, creatinine, ammonia and liver enzymes. Results: In patients with preeclampsia and gestational hypertension we detected a rise in serum ADA as compared with those who had undergone a normal pregnancy. ADA levels were positively correlated with uric acid and creatinine serum levels, but not with clinical severity. Uric acid levels were associated with serum creatinine and the clinical severity of hypertensive disorders. We also found an increase in ammonia levels in patients with preeclampsia, which did not correlate with other biochemical markers, while the levels of SGOT, SGPT, and LDH were significantly elevated in severe preeclampsia. Conclusion: This study establishes a link between the activity of ADA with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, high levels of ammonium with preeclampsia and uric acid, SGOT, SGPT and LDH levels with the severity of hypertensive disorders.

46. Prevalence of dyslipidemia in the Iraqi adult population

Abstract

To establish the prevalence of dyslipidemia in the Iraqi adult population in Mosul, Iraq, according to the different recommended criteria.The study was carried out from October 2003 to April 2004, with 871 apparently healthy volunteers (413 males, 458 females) aged 20-70 year ([mean +/- SD] 41.2 +/- 13.8 year). Fasting blood specimens were collected from all subjects for measurement of serum lipid profile including triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC), high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C), low density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C), and ratios of cholesterol such as TC:HDL-C, LDL-C:HDL-C, and TG:HDL-C. Classification was carried out according to the different cut-off levels as recommended by the 2001 American National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) III using thresholds of TGor = 150 mg/dl (2.0 mmol/L), LDL-Cor = 100 mg/dl (2.6 mmol/L), HDL-C40 mg/dl (1.04 mmol/L), and non-HDL-Cor 130 mg/dl (3.37 mmol/L). The criteria of the 1998 British Hyperlipidemia Association (BHA) were also followed using thresholds of TGor =180 mg/dl (2.4 mmol/L), TCor 194 mg/dl (5.0 mmol/L), LDL-Cor = 116 mg/dl (3.0 mmol/L), HDL-Cor =45 mg/dl (1.15 mmol/L), TC:HDL-Cor =5.0, HDL-C:DL-Cor =2.5, and TG:HDL-Cor =3.0.Based on the American NCEP III criteria, the dyslipidemic states were noted with high TG (41.6%), high LDL-C (57.8%), low HDL-C (49.9%), and high non-HDL-C (56.8%) from the subjects. Based on the BHA criteria, high TG (24.5%), high TC (32.7%), high LDL-C (37.8%), high TC:HDL-C (30.9%), high LDL-C HDL-C (55.7%), and high TG:HDL-C (58.3%) were noted.Dyslipidemia is common in the Iraqi population, and this was identified at different recommendation criteria.
