Background: Acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) is a severe form of leukemia marked by an excess of lymphoblasts or lymphocytes in the bone marrow and peripheral circulation. While hepatitis is a well-known consequence of acute lymphoblastic leukemia treatment, the link between aberrant liver biochemistry and early leukemia presentation is poorly understood. The aim of this study is to assess the state of liver function in those with acute leukemia by monitoring the activities of alkaline phosphatase (ALP), aspartate aminotransferase (AST) , and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) , levels of bilirubin, as well as assessing the impact of ALL on other variables including calcium and phosphorus. Methods: In this research, 40 ALL patients and a control group of 40 healthy individuals were included in the study. The functioning of the liver was examined by measuring the activities of ALT, AST, ALP, and bilirubin levels in blood samples. Besides that, measuring serum calcium and phosphorus levels. Results: In accordance with the findings, there were substantial differences in ALT, AST, ALP, and bilirubin between the control and patient groups. In addition, there were a significant differences between patients and controls regarding the serum content of calcium and phosphorus. Conclusions: A liver function test should be done on leukemia patients before treatment, according to this study, which found that blood ALT, AST, ALP, and bilirubin levels are high at the time of acute leukemia diagnosis.

Due to, the great electronic development, which reinforced the need to define people's identities, different methods, and databases to identification people's identities have emerged. In this paper, we compare the results of two texture analysis methods: Local Binary Pattern (LBP) and Local Ternary Pattern (LTP). The comparison based on comparing the extracting facial texture features of 40 and 401 subjects taken from ORL and UFI databases respectively. As well, the comparison has taken in the account using three distance measurements such as; Manhattan Distance (MD), Euclidean Distance (ED), and Cosine Distance (CD). Where the maximum accuracy of the LBP method (99.23%) is obtained with a Manhattan and ORL database, while the LTP method attained (98.76%) using the same distance and database. While, the facial database of UFI shows low quality, which is satisfied 75.98% and 73.82% recognition rates using LBP and LTP respectively with Manhattan distance.

The cytotoxic effect of zinc oxide nanoparticles against mice mammary adenocarcenoma cells was carried out in vitro. The used nanoparticles were synthesized by pulsed laser ablation in liquid methods; the used liquid was deionized water. Colloidal suspension of zinc oxide nanoparticles was synthesized by Q-switched Nd: YAG pulse laser device (1064 nm) laser energy was 600 mJ and pulse duration was 10 nanosecond. High purity metallic zinc plate was submerged in 10 ml deionized water in 50 ml glass baker and ablated with 1000 pulse at room temperature. The nanospecificities of the synthesized nanoparticle colloidal were characterized with UV-Vis scanning spectrophotometer. Atomic force microscope was used to determine the particle size distribution and particles shape. The ZnO crestless formation was characterized by X-ray diffraction. Mice mammary adenocarcenoma cells was treated with 25, 50, 100 ppm of ZnO nanoparticles. Results indicated a significant toxicity of the ZnO nanoparticles toward cancer cells, this toxicity correlated directly with ZnO nanoparticles elevated concentrations. These result need to be further investigated and the molecular mechanism of ZnO nanoparticles effect should be more clarify.

Activating joy is a rigorous and serious pursuit in literacy education. In this article, we guide educators through the framework of culturally and historically responsive education and its five pursuits: identity, skills, intellect, criticality, and joy. Our focus is on the fifth pursuit -joy-- and we support elementary school teachers in pursuing joy during read-aloud in their classrooms. As we advocate for activating joy during read-aloud, we ask educators to consider joy and its relationship to justice and humanity. We suggest that to activate joy, educators must start with stories that center and celebrate our young people, their lived experiences, and their histories from a place of self-empowerment. We offer practical examples of culturally and historically responsive read-alouds that center five types of joy.

Abstract Objectives Childhood obesity imposes a remarkable socio-economic and health-related burden, with an increasing worldwide trend. We aimed to assess the relationship between modifiable factors and obesity in Iranian children and adolescents along with to determine the population attributable risk fraction (PARF) for the risk factors of obesity in Iranian children and adolescents. Methods This is a nationwide cross-sectional study involving 14,400 school-aged students. In addition to physical examination, a self-administered questionnaire was completed to obtain the study variables including dietary behavior, physical activity, screen time, sleep duration, socioe-conomic status (SES), and passive smoking. Logistic regression models were applied to assess the relationship between modifiable risk factors and obesity. Population attributable risk fractions (PARFs) were used to estimate the prevalence of obesity if demonstrated modifiable risk factors would be removed. Results Of 14,400 recruited students, data on 12,153 subjects were analyzed in the current study. The mean (SD) age of participants was 12.3 (3.16) years, and 49.1% were female. Overall prevalence of obesity was 10.4%. In total, 33.2% of obesity in Iranian children and adolescents might be attributed to unhealthy dietary habits, moderate or high familial SES, body shape dissatisfaction, and prolonged screen time. Conclusions Considering the inherent limitations of the cross-sectional studies, our findings suggest that a notable proportion of obesity in children and adolescents might be attributable to unhealthy dietary habits, prolonged screen time as well as higher family SES. These findings may provide insights for planning and optimizing future obesity intervention endeavors.

Abstract Background To protect patients during anesthesia, difficult airway management is a serious issue that needs to be carefully planned for and carried out. Machine learning prediction tools have recently become increasingly common in medicine, frequently surpassing more established techniques. This study aims to utilize machine learning techniques on predictive parameters for challenging airway management. Methods This study was cross-sectional. The Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences in Iran’s Loghman Hakim and Shahid Labbafinezhad hospitals provided 622 records in total for analysis. Using the forest of trees approach and feature importance, important features were chosen. The Synthetic Minority Oversampling Technique (SMOTE) and repeated edited nearest neighbor under-sampling were used to balance the data. Using Python and 10-fold cross-validation, seven machine learning algorithms were assessed: Logistic Regression, Support Vector Machines (SVM), Random Forest (INFORMATION-GAIN and GINI-INDEX), Decision Tree, and K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN). Metrics like F-measure, AUC, Recall, Accuracy, Specificity, and Precision were used to evaluate the performance of the model. Results Twenty-four important features were chosen from the original 32 features. The under-sampling strategy produced better results than SMOTE. Among the algorithms, KNN (Euclidean, Minkowski) had better performance than other algorithms. The highest values ​​for accuracy, precision, recall, F-measure, and AUC were obtained at 0.87, 0.88, 0.82, 0.85, and 0.87, respectively. Conclusion Algorithms for machine learning provide insightful information for anticipating challenging airway management. By making it possible to forecast airway difficulties more accurately, these techniques can potentially improve clinical practice and patient outcomes.

PURPOSE: To determine the accuracy of magnetic resonance imaging-proton density fat fraction (MRI-PDFF) measurements for detecting liver fat content in potential living liver donors and to compare these results using liver biopsy findings. METHODS: A total of 139 living liver donors (men/women: 83/56) who underwent MRI between January 2017 and September 2021 were included in this analysis retrospectively. The PDFFs were measured using both MR spectroscopy (MRS) and chemical shift-based MRI (CS-MRI) for each donor in a blinded manner. RESULTS: Significant positive correlations were found between liver biopsy and MRS-PDFF and CS-MRI PDFF in terms of hepatic steatosis detection [r = 0.701, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.604–0.798, r = 0.654, 95% CI: 0.544–0.765, P < 0.001, respectively). A weak level correlation was observed between liver biopsy, MRI methods, and vibration-controlled transient elastography attenuation parameters in 42 available donors. Based on receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis, MRS-PDFF and CS-MRI PDFF significantly distinguished >5% of histopathologically detected hepatic steatosis with an area under the ROC curve (AUC) of 0.837 ± 0.036 (P < 0.001, 95% CI: 0.766–0.907) and 0.810 ± 0.036 (P < 0.001, 95% CI: 0.739–0.881), respectively. The negative predictive values (NPVs) of MRS-PDFF and CS-MRI PDFF were 88.3% and 81.3%, respectively. In terms of distinguishing between clinically significant hepatic steatosis (≥10% on histopathology), the AUC of MRS-PDFF and CS-MRI were 0.871 ± 0.034 (P < 0.001 95% CI: 0.804–0.937) and 0.855 ± 0.036 (P < 0.001, 95% CI: 0.784–0.925), respectively. The NPVs of MRS-PDFF and CS-MRI were 99% and 92%, respectively. CONCLUSION: The methods of MRS-PDFF and CS-MRI PDFF provide a non-invasive and accurate approach for assessing hepatic steatosis in potential living liver donor candidates. These MRI PDFF techniques present a promising clinical advantage in the preoperative evaluation of living liver donors by eliminating the requirement for invasive procedures like liver biopsy.

Summary: Cigarette smoke exposure (CSE) increases the risk for a plethora of cancers. Recent evidence indicates that the gut microbiome can influence cancer progression by immune system modulation. Since CSE alters the gut microbiome, we hypothesized that the gut microbiome serves as a causative link between smoking and cancer growth. Through a combination of syngeneic animal models and fecal microbiota transplantation studies, we established an essential role for smoke-induced dysbiosis in cancer growth. 16s rRNA sequencing and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry indicated a unique CSE-associated microbial and metabolomic signature. Immunophenotyping of tumor specimens and experiments in Rag1-KO and CD8-KO demonstrated that smoke-induced tumor growth requires functional adaptive immunity. Finally, utilizing gut microbial ablation strategies with broad- and narrow-spectrum antibiotics, we demonstrated the reversal of phenotypic effects of CSE. Our study provides evidence for gut microbiome as an actionable target to mitigate CSE-induced tumor promotion.

This study explores the physicochemical characteristics of conjugated whey protein isolate (WPI) with ascorbic acid (AA) particles and their ability to form stable Pickering emulsions (PEs). Conjugation was studied with WPI: AA in the ratio of 10:1 mg/mL under different treatments, including heat treatment at 60 °C, and alkaline conditions (pH = 9). Conjugation in the heat-treated WPI-AA under alkaline conditions (HWPI-AA-pH) sample was confirmed by a reduction in free amino groups (27.95 %), quenching of fluorescence intensity at 320 nm, and reduction of amide I and II band intensities in FT-IR analysis, indicating the severity of the Maillard reaction under thermal treatment and alkaline conditions. The HWPI-AA-pH particles exhibited an average size of 105 nm, a zeta potential of −36 mV, and a three-phase contact angle of 80°, and were able to significantly reduce the interfacial tension. The physical and oxidative stability of the prepared emulsion with variously treated WPI-AA as the aqueous phase at the ratio of 50:50 water-to-oil was evaluated over 40 days. Among treatments, HWPI-AA-pH provided the highest physical stability, as observed by the creaming index, confirming the formation of PEs. The mentioned emulsions also demonstrated superior oxidative stability, with lower peroxide values and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances. The findings highlight the potential of WPI-AA conjugates as innovative stabilizers for high-oil emulsions, offering practical applications as fat replacers in low-calorie food formulations. The use of AA for protein modification underlines a novel approach in food science, with promising implications for improving the functionality of emulsion-based products.

Background Menopause is an important milestone in the women’s life continuum and is associated with potentially adverse effects, including those related to oral health. This study assessed self-reported periodontal disease in relation to menopausal status. Methods A cross-sectional study involving a convenience sample of female university dental hospital attendees was conducted using a validated, self-administered, self-reported periodontal disease questionnaire. A two-step cluster analysis was used to categorize the participants based on menstrual period (MP) continuity, systemic diseases and age. Differences between clusters were analyzed using chi-square test. Results From 112 included participants, three clusters resulted from the analysis: Cluster #1 (37 ± 8 years, no systemic diseases and continued MP), Cluster #2 (40 ± 10, with systemic diseases and continued MP) and Cluster #3 (54 ± 9, with systemic diseases and discontinued MP). Cluster #3 tended to have less optimal oral hygiene habits and more missing teeth (p > 0.05). Clusters #1 and #2 insignificantly reported more gingival bleeding, tooth sensitivity and calculus (p > 0.05). Cluster #3, on the other hand, presented with more self-reported oral dryness (p ≤ 0.05). Conclusions Within study limits, clusters of menopausal women with systemic diseases reported high symptoms of periodontal disease that were not significantly different from younger individuals, with the exception of oral dryness.

Abstract Background Skin cancer continues to be an imperative global health issue, urging continuous exploration of treatment methodologies. Conventional treatments for skin cancer include surgical interventions, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. However, these methods often present obstacles like treatment resistance, systemic toxicity, limited effectiveness in advanced stages, infection risk, pain, long recovery, and impact on healthy tissue. Main body of the abstract Nanomedicine holds promise by facilitating precise drug administration, early detection, and heightened therapeutic efficiency via targeted and localized delivery systems. The integration of nanomedicine into skin cancer alleviation therapies demonstrates optimistic outcomes, including refined drug delivery, augmented bioavailability, minimized adverse effects, and potential theranostic applications. Recent breakthroughs in nanomedicine have propelled advancements in skin cancer treatment, showing significant potential in transforming the treatment paradigm. The presents review provides comprehensive aspects of existing skin cancer treatments and their challenges, spotlighting recent breakthroughs propelled by nanomedicine. Short conclusion This abstract delineates the present landscape of skin cancer treatments, underscores their constraints, and highlights recent strides in nanomedicine that have the potential to transform the paradigm of skin cancer treatment, ultimately elevating patient prognosis. Importantly, the present review emphasizes substantial challenges that hinder the clinical translation of nanomedicines and suggests possible remedies to surpass them. Graphic abstract

Abstract Objective The present study sought to assess the prevalence and determinants of tobacco use (cigarette smoking and shisha use) and khat chewing among Yemeni adolescents, and to evaluate their knowledge and attitudes toward these habits. Methods This school-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 13 to 19-year-old students attending middle/high schools (both private and public) across five main cities in Yemen. Data were collected using self-administered questionnaires comprising questions/items related to sociodemographic data, cigarette smoking, shisha use, khat chewing, and knowledge on and attitudes toward these habits. Bivariate and multivariate analyses were used to explore the most determinant factors. Results A total of 7505 students were recruited from 42 schools across five major cities in Yemen. The prevalence rates of khat chewing, cigarette smoking, and shisha use were 42.4%, 6.8%, and 19.3%, respectively. Background: Class III obesity, formerly known as morbid obesity, is a known risk factor for chronic kidney diseases. Due to outdated information suggesting that morbid obesity is a contraindication for kidney biopsy and the misconception that proteinuria in obese patients is solely related to hyperfiltration, necessiating only conservative treatment, the vast majority of primary glomerulonephritis in these patients remains undiagnosed and untreated. Here, the clinical characteristics, treatments and results of patients who had class III obesity and needed a kidney biopsy are presented. Methods: Two hundred thirty-one native kidney biopsies conducted between 2015 and 2021 were retrospectively reviewed, identifying 12 patients with a body mass index ≥40 kg/m2 . Results: Ten patients presented with nephrotic syndrome, 8 of these patients underwent immunosuppressive therapy. Membranous nephropathy and focal segmental glomerulosclerosis were the most common diagnoses. Seven patients went into remission during follow-up. Our results indicated that class III obesity alone is not a detrimental morbidity when it comes to diagnosing and treating glomerular diseases. Conclusion: If a primary glomerulonephritis is diagnosed through a safe biopsy procedure, there is no reason to avoid considering immunosuppressive therapy for these patients.

Abstract The depth dependence of structural relaxation dynamics is a key part of understanding thin glassy films. Despite this importance and decades of research, a method to provide this information has proved elusive. We measure the isothermal rejuvenation of stable glass films of poly(styrene), and demonstrate that the propagation of the front responsible for the transformation to a supercooled-liquid state serves as a highly localized probe of the local dynamics of the supercooled liquid. We use this connection to probe the depth-dependent relaxation rate with nanometric precision for a series of polystyrene films over a range of temperatures near the bulk glass transition temperature. The analysis shows the spatial extent of enhanced surface mobility and reveals the existence of an unexpected large dynamical length scale in the system. The results are compared with the cooperative-string model for glassy dynamics. The data reveals that the film-thickness dependence of whole film properties arises mainly from the volume fraction of the near-surface region. While the dynamics farthest from the free surface shows the expected bulk-like temperature dependence, the dynamics in the near-surface region shows very little dependence on temperature. This technique can be used in a broad range of thin film materials to gain previously unattainable information about localized structural relaxation.

Introduction: Because of wide heterogeneity in the epidemiology of heart failure among different populations, it is imperative to establish population-specific databases. Aims and Objectives: To describe the clinical profile, treatment patterns, and outcomes of heart failure patients admitted to our tertiary care hospital. Material and Methods: The study was a prospective observational study conducted over two years at our tertiary care hospital. It included patients admitted with acute and acute-on-chronic heart failure. Results: We recruited 264 patients. Mean age of the study population was 57.8 ± 15.14 years. Males were 157 (59.5%). Dilated cardiomyopathy was the most common cause followed by ischemic heart disease. Most common risk factors were hypertension, tobacco use, anemia, and diabetes. Heart failure with reduced ejection fraction was present in 154 (62%) patients. Acute de novo heart failure was present in 91 (34.5%) patients. The most common precipitant for heart failure exacerbation was infection, followed by ischemic causes and non-adherence to drugs. The mean duration of hospital stay was 7.5 ± 3.1 days. The in-hospital mortality was 8.7%, and cumulative six-month and one-year mortality was 23% and 28%, respectively. In multivariate analysis, renal failure, readmission, and not being on guideline-directed medical treatment were significant predictors of mortality. Conclusion: Our patients were younger, predominantly males, with dilated and ischemic cardiomyopathy as commonest etiology. Hypertension and tobacco smoking were most common risk factors, with infections as most common precipitants. Only one-third of patients were on guideline-directed medical therapy. The one-year mortality was 28% and was higher in those without guideline-directed medical therapy.

The present study undertakes the phytochemical analysis of Onopordum acanthium L., commonly named Scotch thistle, collected from five different places in the western region of Iraq, for its antioxidant activities. Consequently, an attempt to identify the chemical composition of the plant for Al-Karmah, Ramadi, Hit, Fallujah, and Al-Qaim, respectively, was stated on the strength of GC-MS technology. The outcomes showed a region-inducing, high variability in the chemical profile of this plant with active compounds in the range of 18 to 29, which is the highest number in Hit and Al-Karmah, indicating the richer biodiversity or favorable environmental conditions of the area. Compounds detected in all the regions included neovitadiene and hexadecanoic acid methyl ester, which are critical building blocks of the plant's metabolic framework for survival at different scales. Antioxidant activity of O. acanthium was also performed, and the plant sample from Ramadi presented the highest scavenging activity, 86% ± 0.05, reflecting higher antioxidant potential. In contrast, the lowest activity was found for the samples from Fallujah, 51% ± 0.32, probably due to less appropriate environmental conditions. The present study underlines the importance of regional environmental factors affecting the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites in O. acanthium. Consequently, such environmental conditions have a pronounced impact on the antioxidant properties of this plant, which might be of interest for pharmacy and agriculture. Also, the presence of ascorbic acid in the samples shows that this plant can be very useful for natural antioxidants; thus, other studies could be developed from its medicinal and nutritional use.

Machine learning (ML) is poised to drive innovations in clinical microbiomics, such as in disease diagnostics and prognostics. However, the successful implementation of ML in these domains necessitates the development of reproducible, interpretable models that meet the rigorous performance standards set by regulatory agencies. This study aims to identify key areas in need of improvement in current ML practices within microbiomics, with a focus on bridging the gap between existing methodologies and the requirements for clinical application. To do so, we analyze 100 peer-reviewed articles from 2021 to 2022. Within this corpus, datasets have a median size of 161.5 samples, with over one-third containing fewer than 100 samples, signaling a high potential for overfitting. Limited demographic data further raises concerns about generalizability and fairness, with 24% of studies omitting participants' country of residence, and attributes like race/ethnicity, education, and income rarely reported (11%, 2%, and 0%, respectively). Methodological issues are also common; for instance, for 86% of studies we could not confidently rule out test set omission and data leakage, suggesting a strong potential for inflated performance estimates across the literature. Reproducibility is a concern, with 78% of studies abstaining from sharing their ML code publicly. Based on this analysis, we provide guidance to avoid common pitfalls that can hinder model performance, generalizability, and trustworthiness. An interactive tutorial on applying ML to microbiomics data accompanies the discussion, to help establish and reinforce best practices within the community.

Abstract Ginger, Zingiber officinale, is a medicinal herb widely used for its distinct flavor and medicinal properties. It contains various bioactive compounds, including zingerone, shogaols, gingerol saponin, polyphenols, and flavonoids, which confer anti‐inflammatory, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory effects. Ginger and its derivatives such as powder, essential oil, and active ginger extracts have been used as natural functional ingredients with health‐promoting and disease‐preventing properties. In recent studies, ginger derivatives have been tested in aquafeeds for their potential as safe herbal medicines. They have shown several benefits, acting as growth promoters and modulators of physiological and biochemical functions. Ginger has been found to improve growth performance, modulate immunity, and enhance disease resistance in fish. Its organic constituents exhibit potent anti‐stress, antibacterial, antiviral, and antiparasitic activities, thereby boosting the specific and nonspecific immunity of aquaculture fish. This review provides a comphrensive summary of studies exploring the effects of dietary ginger on various aspects of fish health including growth performance, blood parameters, immunity, disease resistance, gut morphology, antioxidant status, and molecular mechanisms. Furthermore, the review emphasizes the necessity of elucidating the specific bioactive compounds in ginger responsible for its biological functions and their mechanisms of action against infectious diseases in different fish species.

This study analyses the impact of information and communications technology (ICT) diffusion and e-governance on sustainability in 148 Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) partner countries. It considers control variables such as institutional quality, urbanization, research and development (R&D), and the COVID-19 effect as dummy variables. Two step-generalised method of moments analysis of a panel dataset of 148 BRI partner countries from 2013 to 2021 reveals that ICT diffusion and e-governance benefit sustainability, with R&D and institutional quality also making positive contributions, while urbanization and the pandemic negatively impact sustainability. The findings were validated through D-K regression checks and support the technology spill-over effect, innovation, triple bottom line, endogenous growth, and stakeholder theories. They highlight the significance of investing in ICT infrastructure and digital literacy programs, improving institutional reforms and governance practices, putting sustainable urban planning into practice, and supporting R&D projects to advance sustainability in BRI partner nations. This study clarifies the potential problems brought forth by the pandemic and makes suggestions for reducing its negative effects on sustainability. It contributes to evidence-based decision-making, guiding sustainable practices in BRI partner nations.

In the face of growing global challenges in food security and increasing demand for sustainable protein sources, the aquaculture industry is undergoing a transformative shift through the integration of nanotechnology. This review paper explores the profound role of nanotechnology in aquaculture, addressing critical issues such as efficient feed utilization, disease management, and environmental sustainability. Nanomaterials are used to enhance nutritional content and digestibility of aquafeed, optimize fish growth and health, and improve disease prevention. Nanoparticle-based vaccines and drug delivery systems reduce antibiotic reliance, while nano sensors monitor water quality in real-time. Furthermore, nanotechnology has revolutionized infrastructure design, contributing to smart, self-regulating aquaculture systems. IntroductionSingle-cell RNA sequencing (scRNAseq) and flow cytometry studies in skin are methodologically complex and costly, limiting their accessibility to researchers worldwide. Ideally, RNA and protein-based analyses should be performed on the same lesion to obtain more comprehensive data. However, current protocols generally focus on either scRNAseq or flow cytometry of healthy skin.MethodsWe present a novel label-free sample multiplexing strategy, building on the souporcell algorithm, which enables scRNAseq analysis of paired blood and skin samples. Additionally, we provide detailed instructions for simultaneous flow cytometry analysis from the same sample, with necessary adaptations for both healthy and inflamed skin specimens.ResultsThis tissue multiplexing strategy mitigates technical batch effects and reduces costs by 2-4 times compared to existing protocols. We also demonstrate the effects of varying enzymatic incubation durations (1, 3, and 16 hours, with and without enzyme P) on flow cytometry outcomes. Comprehensive explanations of bioinformatic demultiplexing steps and a detailed step-by-step protocol of the entire experimental procedure are included.DiscussionThe protocol outlined in this article will make scRNAseq and flow cytometry analysis of skin samples more accessible to researchers, especially those new to these techniques.

Introduction: Protection of the respiratory system has been a vital, and for this purpose, various solutions have been proposed, including the use of masks. One of the most important parameters to measure the effectiveness of the mask against the penetration of microbial agents. The present study was conducted with the aim of evaluating the bacterial and particle filtration of medical masks. Material and Methods: To assess bacterial performance, the national standard 6138, compliant with EN14683, and Type I medical masks were utilized. Staphylococcus aureus bacterial suspension was prepared and passed through the mask using a nebulizer and through an impactor with a flow rate of 28.3 l/min. Plates containing soy agar were placed in the impactor. Subsequently, all plates were incubated, and the bacterial filtration efficiency (BFE) of the masks was determined by counting the bacterial colonies that passed through the mask’s media as a percentage of the total bacteria. It is worth noting that the pressure drop and particle filtration efficiency were also determined for all masks Results: Based on the results of the particle removal performance for the particle size of 3 µ, the masks were categorized into three groups with efficiency above 99%, above 95% and 90%. According to the standard, all masks had an acceptable pressure drop below 40 Pa. The acceptable bacterial filtration rate for type I masks should be above 95%. The results showed that type A and B masks have an acceptable bacterial filtration rate and there is a significant correlation between the types of masks examined in terms of bacterial and particle efficiency. Conclusion: The results showed that different types of masks under investigation have significant differences in terms of particle capture efficiency and bacterial filtration performance. In addition, there is a significant correlation between bacterial and particle filtration efficiency.

Background. Non-ionizing electromagnetic field (EMF) exposure therapies are non-invasive and safe treatment options that can potentially change available treatments. In this review, we examined the applications of such therapies in dental implant surgery by conducting a systematic review. Methods. A comprehensive search of several international electronic databases was conducted from inception to December 14, 2022. This review included interventional studies that evaluated the advantages of adjunctive magnetic or combined EMFs on dental implants compared to conventional treatments. Results. From a total of 1695 studies, 12 preclinical and clinical studies were selected, discussing EMF-based treatments for enhancing implant stability, osteogenesis, and osseointegration, as well as alleviating post-implant surgery manifestations. Almost all studies on maxillary and mandibular implant stability showed beneficial effects of non-ionizing EMF in humans. Most studies evaluating osteogenesis and osseointegration indicated that EMF exposure could accelerate bone repair and peri-implant bone formation and increase bone contact ratios, bone volume fraction (bone volume/total volume), trabecular number, and trabecular thickness. Only two clinical studies examined the effect of EMF on pain and swelling after dental implant surgery, with one finding that subjects exposed to EMF used analgesics fewer times and in far lower doses than the control group and the other finding no significant difference in reducing these outcomes between the groups. Conclusion. Overall, devices that deliver non-ionizing low-level EMF can be a viable and widely recognized non-invasive adjuvant therapy for attaining success and better outcomes after dental implant surgery due to their efficacy, safety, and short exposure time.

Abstract Background The in-depth understanding of the role of lateral genetic transfer (LGT) in phage-prophage interactions is essential to rationalizing phage applications for human and animal therapy, as well as for food and environmental safety. This in silico study aimed to detect LGT between phages of potential industrial importance and their hosts. Methods A large array of genetic recombination detection algorithms, implemented in SplitsTree and RDP4, was applied to detect LGT between various Escherichia, Listeria, Salmonella, Campylobacter, Staphylococcus, Pseudomonas, and Vibrio phages and their hosts. PHASTER and RAST were employed respectively to identify prophages across the host genome and to annotate LGT-affected genes with unknown functions. PhageAI was used to gain deeper insights into the life cycle history of recombined phages. Results The split decomposition inferences (bootstrap values: 91.3–100; fit: 91.433-100), coupled with the Phi (0.0-2.836E-12) and RDP4 (P being well below 0.05) statistics, provided strong evidence for LGT between certain Escherichia, Listeria, Salmonella, and Campylobacter virulent phages and prophages of their hosts. The LGT events entailed mainly the phage genes encoding for hypothetical proteins, while some of these genetic loci appeared to have been affected even by intergeneric recombination in specific E. coli and S. enterica virulent phages when interacting with their host prophages. Moreover, it is shown that certain L. monocytogenes virulent phages could serve at least as the donors of the gene loci, involved in encoding for the basal promoter specificity factor, for L. monocytogenes. In contrast, the large genetic clusters were determined to have been simultaneously exchanged by many S. aureus prophages and some Staphylococcus temperate phages proposed earlier as potential therapeutic candidates (in their native or modified state). The above genetic clusters were found to encompass multiple genes encoding for various proteins, such as e.g., phage tail proteins, the capsid and scaffold proteins, holins, and transcriptional terminator proteins. Conclusions It is suggested that phage-prophage interactions, mediated by LGT (including intergeneric recombination), can have a far-reaching impact on the co-evolutionary trajectories of industrial phages and their hosts especially when excessively present across microbially rich environments.

Abstract Formaldehyde, a known carcinogenic compound, is commonly used in various medical settings. The objective of this study was to assess the carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks associated with occupational exposure to formaldehyde. This study was conducted in the pathology labs of four hospitals in Tehran. Cancer and non-cancer risks were evaluated using the quantitative risk assessment method proposed by the United States environmental protection agency (USEPA), along with its provided database known as the integrated risk information system (IRIS). Respiratory symptoms were assessed using the American thoracic society (ATS) questionnaire. The results indicated that 91.23% of exposure levels in occupational groups exceed the NIOSH standard of 0.016 ppm. Regarding carcinogenic risk, 41.03% of all the studied subjects were in the definite carcinogenic risk range (LCR > 10−4), 23.08% were in the possible carcinogenic risk range (10−5 1.0). Overall, the findings revealed significantly higher carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks among lab technicians and pathologists. Therefore, it is imperative to implement control measures across various hospital departments to mitigate occupational formaldehyde exposure levels proactively. These findings can be valuable for policymakers in the health sector, aiding in the elimination or reduction of airborne formaldehyde exposure in work environments.

Introduction and Aim: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a noninflammatory joint disease. If OA of the knee causes pain, decreased muscle strength and joint stiffness, exercise therapy is one of the most effective treatments for the disease. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of aquatherapy on pain intensity and performance in women with OA with the assumption that it causes weightlessness. Methods: This is a quasiexperimental study. The sample size included 60 people who were randomly divided into experimental and control groups. The visual analogue scale was used to assess pain and timed up and go test (TUG), 30 Second Sit to Stand Test (30-S-CS), and 40-meter fast-paced walk test (40 MW) were used to assess performance. Data analysis was carried out using SPSS ver. 22. Results: The results of the present study showed a decrease in pain intensity from moderate to mild intensity. Also, physical performance dimensions in patients with OA were improved, so that the average TUG increased from 14.06 to 8.8 s. The average S-CS frequency increased from 4.86 to 8.4 s and 90 MW decreased from the average 93.43 to 72.66 s. Discussion and Conclusion: Lower limb muscle strength, and physical performance can be improved and pain intensity can be reduced in patients with OA by performing aquatherapy three times a week for 8 weeks.

Background: Caesarean sections are categorised into three groups: indications outlined by guidelines, indications determined by doctors, and circumstances including maternal demands. Caesarean birth on maternal request is a technique that is specifically requested by pregnant women who have no obstetric or medical reasons that prevent them from trying a vaginal delivery. Objective: This study aims to ascertain the frequency of caesarean delivery on maternal request within deliveries conducted at Lady Reading Hospital Peshawar. Study type, settings & duration: This retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted at Obstetrics and Gynaecology Unit B, Lady Reading Hospital MTI, Peshawar from February 2021 to December 2022. Methodology: The study comprised 146 pregnant women who had live foetuses and sought caesarean birth due to maternal desire, while also meeting the inclusion criteria. Results: The age of the participants varied between 18 and 40 years, with an average age of 29.6±2.9 years. The average gestational age was 38.9±0.9 weeks, and the average parity was 1.6±1.2. The 12.3% of patients exhibited maternal demands. Conclusion: The most frequent explanations were date of birth selection and labor dread. Reduce the number of primary cesarean procedures by providing adequate prenatal and perinatal counseling to patients, properly monitoring maternal and fetal characteristics, and carefully selecting patients who have previously had cesarean sections for subsequent pregnancies.

These conditions should be studied as psychosomatic conditions, but little research has been done on how these conditions relate to stress. Introduction: The prevalence of COVID-19 has significantly impacted work environments and the workforce. Therefore, identifying the most important preventive and control strategies, as well as assessing their effectiveness, is of paramount importance. Various studies have shown that machine learning algorithms can be used to predict complex and nonlinear issues, including predicting the behavior of various diseases such as COVID-19 and the parameters affecting it, and can be beneficial. The purpose of this study has been to examine the importance of preventive measures and hygiene behaviors in preventing COVID-19 in the oil refining industry using various machine learning models. Material and Methods: For this purpose, demographic information and health behaviors of individuals were collected. Subsequently, a multi-layer perceptron (MLP), radial basis function (RBF), and support vector machine (SVM) models were compared to enhance the analysis of the effects of preventive measures on COVID-19 infection. Finally, the most influential factors affecting the likelihood of COVID-19 infection were determined using sensitivity analysis. Results: The results showed that the accuracies achieved in predicting the impact of preventive measures and health behaviors on COVID-19 in occupational settings were 78.1%, 81.2%, and 78.1% by MLP, RBF, and SVM respectively. The RBF model was identified as the most accurate model for predicting the impact of health behaviors on COVID-19 disease Additionally, the level of social distancing with customers, handwashing frequency and disinfection, the availability of cleansing and disinfecting agents for hands and surfaces in the workplace, and gatherings for eating meals and snacks were identified as the most significant health behaviors influencing the prevalence of COVID-19 in the workplace. Conclusion: Studies of this nature can underscore the importance of attention to preventive measures and health behaviors in unprecedented circumstances. Furthermore, the utilization of artificial intelligence models and tools such as DSS (Decision Support Systems) can serve as powerful tools for optimizing control measures in work environments.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the Frequency of Germinal Center B (GCB) type Diffuse Large B Cell Lymphoma (DLBCL) in Karachi, Pakistan, and to screen the DLBCL patients for EZH2 mutation. METHODOLOGY: A cross-sectional study was conducted on DLBCL patients, and IHC analysis, PCR, and sequencing of the EZH2 gene were used. This study was conducted from August 2016 to July 2020. Surgical specimens received in the histopathology section of DDRRL centrally and from different collection units throughout Sindh having been diagnosed with DLBCL were collected. Three markers (CD10, BCL6, and MUM1) were used for subtyping. DNA was manually extracted from the FFPE Blocks of DLBCL cases using phenol: chloroform: isopropanol alcohol. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was performed, and samples were sent from Dow University to Korea (Macrogen) for sequencing. The amplified product was 189bp. Primers were used for EZH2 to flank the region containing the tyrosine domain on exon 16 and exon 18. RESULTS: Out of 116 cases, 60.3% and 39.7% were male and female, respectively. The mean age was 49.73±16.38 years. The mean survival duration of cases diagnosed with GCB was 8.21±7.39 months. Polymorphism of EZH2 mutation (Tyr 701 Asn) was found to be positive in GCB-DLBCL for three samples (16.6%). CONCLUSION: In the current study, Sanger sequencing was used to detect any mutation in the coding region of EZH2, and a unique mutation was reported (Tyr701Asn).

Abstract Background Multidrug resistance (MDR) in the family Enterobacteriaceae is a perniciously increasing threat to global health security. The discovery of new antimicrobials having the reversing drug resistance potential may contribute to augment and revive the antibiotic arsenal in hand. This study aimed to explore the anti-Enterobacteriaceae capability of bioactive polyphenols from Punica granatum (P. granatum) and their co-action with antibiotics against clinical isolates of Enterobacteriaceae predominantly prevalent in South Asian countries. Methods The Kandhari P. granatum (Pakistani origin) extracts were tested for anti-Enterobacteriaceae activity by agar well diffusion assay against MDR Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi, serovar Typhimurium and Escherichia coli. Predominant compounds of active extract were determined by mass spectrometry and screened for bioactivity by agar well diffusion and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) assay. The active punicalagin was further evaluated at sub-inhibitory concentrations (SICs) for coactivity with nine conventional antimicrobials using a disc diffusion assay followed by time-kill experiments that proceeded with SICs of punicalagin and antimicrobials. Results Among all P. granatum crude extracts, pomegranate peel methanol extract showed the largest inhibition zones of 25, 22 and 19 mm, and the MICs as 3.9, 7.8 and 7.8 mg/mL for S. typhi, S. typhimurium and E. coli, respectively. Punicalagin and ellagic acid were determined as predominant compounds by mass spectrometry. In plate assay, punicalagin (10 mg/mL) was active with hazy inhibition zones of 17, 14, and 13 mm against S. typhi, S. typhimurium and E. coli, respectively. However, in broth dilution assay punicalagin showed no MIC up to 10 mg/mL. The SICs 30 μg, 100 μg, and 500 μg of punicalagin combined with antimicrobials i.e., aminoglycoside, β-lactam, and fluoroquinolone act in synergy against MDR strains with % increase in inhibition zone values varying from 3.4 ± 2.7% to 73.8 ± 8.4%. In time-kill curves, a significant decrease in cell density was observed with the SICs of antimicrobials/punicalagin (0.03–60 μg/mL/30, 100, 500 μg/mL of punicalagin) combinations. Conclusions The P. granatum peel methanol extract exhibited antimicrobial activity against MDR Enterobacteriaceae pathogens. Punicalagin, the bacteriostatic flavonoid act as a concentration-dependent sensitizing agent for antimicrobials against Enterobacteriaceae. Our findings for the therapeutic punicalagin-antimicrobial combination prompt further evaluation of punicalagin as a potent activator for drugs, which otherwise remain less or inactive against MDR strains.

Background and Objectives: Primary prostatic stromal sarcoma is an exceptionally rare urological malignancy, constituting less than 0.1% of all prostatic cancers. It poses a significant clinical challenge due to its aggressive behavior and poor prognosis. Materials and Methods: We report the case of a 34-year-old male who presented with nonspecific lower urinary tract symptoms, including dysuria and increased urinary frequency. The initial diagnostic workup, including digital rectal examination and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), revealed a lobulated lesion within the prostate. A transurethral resection (TUR) was performed for diagnostic purposes, and histopathological examination revealed a “malignant mesenchymal tumor”. The patient underwent a laparoscopic radical prostatectomy. The pathology report confirmed the diagnosis of prostatic stromal sarcoma. The postoperative follow-up, including systemic CT and MRI, showed no evidence of recurrence or metastasis thus far. Results: Multidisciplinary management is essential for optimizing treatment outcomes in all urologic malignancies; however, it becomes particularly challenging and crucial in rare cases such as primary prostatic stromal sarcoma. In our case, the patient benefited from a coordinated approach involving urology, pathology, and oncology, underscoring the importance of collaborative care for rare and aggressive tumors like this. This case highlights the importance of early detection, complete surgical excision, and consideration of adjuvant therapies, given the aggressive nature of the disease. The role of novel therapeutic strategies, including immunotherapy and targeted therapies, is also discussed in the context of metastatic sarcomas. Conclusions: This case underscores the critical need for a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to managing primary prostatic stromal sarcoma. Ongoing research on innovative therapies offers hope for improved outcomes in metastatic stages.

Introduction: VOCs are harmful air pollutants that must be detected, monitored and eliminated. Adsorber tubes are standard tools for this task, specifically activated carbon tubes with high adsorption and selectivity. This research aims to compare the structural and functional characteristics of domestically produced activated carbon tubes with the conventional commercial ones for sampling toluene, a volatile organic compound. Material and Methods: The characteristics of each adsorbent, such as structure, morphology, porosity, and element composition, were examined by SEM photography, BET testing, and EDAX analysis. The central composite design (CCD) method was employed to investigate the adsorption properties of the adsorbents. The input concentration and readsorption time of the samples were the variables considered in this study. Additionally, a field phase of personal air sampling was performed to evaluate the effectiveness of adsorbent tubes. Results: SEM and BET analyses indicated that the porous structure of domestic activated carbon was comparable to the model produced by SKC. EDAX analysis detected a minor impurity (1%) in the domestic activated carbon adsorbent. The adsorption performance was significantly influenced by the variations in readsorption time and pollutant input concentration. The accuracy and precision of the performance of the domestic adsorbent tube were obtained as 90.77% and 91.76%. The field phase results demonstrated that the amount of pollutant adsorbed in the SKC-activated charcoal adsorber did not differ significantly during 0 to 30 days. However, the domestic adsorber showed a significant difference in the same period. The overall performance of the two adsorbers did not exhibit a significant difference between 0 and 30 days. Conclusion: Despite minor structural differences, the adsorption efficiency of toluene by domestic adsorbent tubes in sampling high concentrations is very similar to its commercial type. However, it is not recommended for use in low-concentration environments (10 ppm and less).
