Objective: The aim of the study was to examine the relationship of internet addiction and related variables with high-risk personality traits that predict future alcohol and substance use in adolescents and to compare adolescents with and without internet addiction in terms of these personality traits.Method: A cross-sectional design study was adopted in which 196 participants, 161 of whom were males, with a mean age of 16.7 took part. The assessment consisted of a demographic form, and additionally two self-administered instruments including the Substance Use Risk Profile Scale (SURPS) and the Addiction Profile Index Internet Addiction Form (BAPINT).Results: There was a statistically significant relationship between the scores of the craving for the BAPINT and the scores of the impulsivity for the SURPS. In addition, there was a statistically significant relationship between the scores of the effect on life for the BAPINT and the scores of the anxiety sensitivity for the SURPS . According to the BAPINT, 31.1% (n=61) of the participants had internet addiction. There were no significant differences between the adolescents with and without internet addiction in terms of the personality traits.Conclusion: Screening and interfering with impulsivity and anxiety sensitivity when assessing internet use in adolescents may protect against internet addiction., Amaç: Bu çalışmanın amacı, ergenlerde internet bağımlılığı ve ilişkili değişkenlerin gelecekteki alkol ve madde kullanımını yordayan yüksek riskli kişilik özellikleri ile ilişkisini incelemek ve internet bağımlılığı olan ve olmayan ergenleri bu kişilik özellikleri açısından karşılaştırmaktı.Yöntem: Yaş ortalaması 16,7 ve 161’i erkek olan 196 katılımcının yer aldığı çalışmanın deseni kesitseldi. Değerlendirme, bir demografik form ile Madde Kullanım Risk Profili Ölçeği (MKRPÖ) ve Bağımlılık Profil İndeksi İnternet Bağımlılığı Formu (BAPİNT) olmak üzere ilaveten iki öz-bildirim ölçeğini içerdi. Bulgular: BAPİNT aşerme skorları ile MKRPÖ dürtüsellik skorları arasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bir ilişki olduğu , ayrıca BAPİNT yaşama etki skorları ile MKRPÖ anksiyete duyarlılığı skorları arasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bir ilişki olduğu saptandı . BAPİNT’e göre katılımcıların %31,1’inde (n=61) internet bağımlılığı olduğu belirlendi, internet bağımlılığı olan ve olmayan ergenler arasında bu kişilik özellikleri açısından istatistiksel olarak anlamlı farklılıklar saptanmadı.Sonuç: Ergenlerde internet kullanımı değerlendirilirken dürtüsellik ve anksiyete duyarlılığının taranması ve müdahale edilmesi ergenleri internet bağımlılığına karşı koruyabilir.

Objectives:This study aimed to determine the challenges faced by child psychiatrists in our country during the assessment of special needs for children in practice after regulation on the assessment of special needs for children (RASNC) regulation.Materials and Methods:All specialists and academicians being the members of Turkish Association for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry were reached via e-mail between September and October 2020. A self-report questionnaire consisting of closed and open-ended questions about the variables of the individuals and processes for patients’ evaluation, diagnosis, referral to the health committee and report preparation after RASNC regulation was applied to volunteer participants.Results:The average age of the participants (n=156) was 33.8 (±4.1) years and 67.3% of them were female. In our study, it was shown that referrals to the committee were mostly made by a child psychiatrist, some psychiatric diagnoses were not educationally approved by the guidance research center (GRC), this might affect the diagnostic decision of the physicians, while evaluating the patients after RASNC, almost half of the participants had difficulties in at least one area of cognitive development, language, speech and communication and child psychiatry, and had problems related to border violation especially with different disciplines, the hospitals they worked in did not have a defined RASNC authorized physician, and patients with the same diagnosis in different centers might differ in terms of special needs area and level.Conclusion:In order to solve the difficulties faced by child and adolescent psychiatrists, rational arrangements should be made in RASNC regulation and then relevant physicians, hospital managers and GRC personnel should be trained on the regulation.

Background Personality traits of adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) and those of their mothers may lead to poor glycemic control through psychiatric comorbidity. However, it is not yet known how the personality traits of adolescents with T1DM and those of their mothers affect metabolic control in the absence of or before the development of psychiatric disorders. We aimed to determine the effects of subclinical emotional and behavioral problems, as well as maternal and own personality traits, on metabolic control in adolescents with T1DM. Methods A total of 48 adolescents with diabetes (19 females and 29 males), with a median age of 14 years, who did not meet diagnostic criteria for a psychiatric condition, and their mothers completed the Junior Temperament and Character Inventory (J-TCI) as well as the adolescent and parent forms of the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) and the TCI for adults. The mean HbA1c levels measured in the past year were obtained from medical records. Results Personality traits and the emotional and behavioral difficulties in adolescents with poor metabolic control were similar to those with good metabolic control (p>.05). However, the self-directedness and cooperativeness subscale scores of the TCI completed by the mothers of those in the poor metabolic control group were significantly lower than the others: 25.5 vs. 30.4; t(39)= 3.737, p= .001, and 27.3 vs. 31.5; t(46)= 2.759, p= .008; respectively. Conclusion Our study showed that adolescents’ personality and subclinical symptoms were not related to HbA1c levels in the absence of psychiatric comorbidity, while some maternal personality traits were associated with metabolic control. Management of T1DM should be tailored to adolescents and their needs with the proper involvement of mothers.

The impacts of sex, age of onset, phenotype, and comorbidity on clinical features were explored in a large clinical sample with pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder (p-OCD) (n = 457), along with concomitant specific features in the framework of different symptom dimensions/phenotypes, by a retrospective cross-sectional evaluation design. The most prevalent phenotype was obsession/checking (almost half), and the clinical features belonging to different phenotypes varied among sexes, age of onset, severity, and comorbidities. The contamination and aggressive obsessions, along with the compulsions such as cleaning and repeating routine activities, were the most prevalent symptoms, which were prevalently accompanied by generalized anxiety disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and depression. Females with OCD were likely prone to exhibit comorbid internalizing disorders, whereas males were prone to externalizing. This recent study on a large Turkish clinical sample of p-OCD followed up within 5 years, highlighting separate evidence on subtyping of p-OCD in phenotype and comorbidity frame.

Smoking is one of the most important public health problems among young people. Potential risk factors that may cause vulnerability to smoke in youth should be well known and investigated. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the associations of current smoking behavior and future smoking intention with high-risk personality traits for substance abuse in a clinical sample of Turkish adolescents, and also evaluate nicotine dependence and smoking characteristics with the personality traits in a subsample of regular smokers.A cross-sectional study was adopted in which 196 participants took part (aged 14-18 years with a mean of 16.7 years). The assessment consisted of a sociodemographic questionnaire that also questions current smoking behavior and future smoking intention; and additionally, two self-administered instruments including the Substance Use Risk Profile Scale (SURPS) for all participants, and Fagerström Test for Nicotine Dependence (FTND) for only regular smokers.Regular smokers scored higher than never smokers on the lack of self-contentment subscale of SURPS (F(2)=3.30, p=.039). Future smoking intention was found to be associated with nicotine dependence (F(3)=6.67, p=.001). Regular smokers with high levels of nicotine dependence had higher levels of impulsivity and smoked more cigarettes per day than those with low levels of nicotine dependence (t=2.489, p=.017; and t=3.530, p=.001, respectively). The structural equation models (SEM) were created based on these results and the personality theory for substance abuse. The SEM results showed that the first evidence that lack of selfcontentment positively influences regularly smoking behavior and impulsivity positively influences future smoking intention through nicotine dependence.Lack of self-contentment and impulsivity may mediate the transition from current smoking behavior to future tobacco use disorders in Turkish adolescents. The assessment and intervention of selfdiscontentment and impulsivity can be beneficial in reducing the current smoking behavior in Turkish adolescents.

Morningness-Eveningness Stability Scale improved (MESSi) is an assessment tool that evaluates distinctness of daily changes as well as the person's propensity for morningness and eveningness. The aim of this study is to evaluate psychometric properties of the Turkish version of MESSi and associations of chronotypes and diurnal variations with personality, affect, sleep quality as well as validity of the scale in Turkish adolescents. The sample of this study consisted of 445 students between ages of 10-19. Participants filled in MESSi, Morningness/Eveningness Scale for Children, Composite Scale of Morningness, Personality Traits Scale (BIG-5), Positive and Negative Affect Scale (PANAS), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Reliability analysis of the scale showed quite reliable internal consistency values. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was used to test construct validity of three-factor model of MESSi. An acceptable model fit was demonstrated in CFA. There was a moderate and significant relationship between MA and DI subscale scores of MESSi. A moderate but negative correlation was found between MA and EV subscale scores of MESSi. MA and DI subscale scores of MESSi were found to be weakly correlated with conscientiousness, emotional stability, openness to experience and subscale scores of BIG-5, respectively. There was a positive correlation of positive affect subscale scores of PANAS with MA and DI subscale scores of MESSi. MA subscale scores of MESSi were found to be negatively correlated with scores of subjective sleep quality, latency, duration, disturbances, habitual sleep efficiency, daytime dysfunction, and global scores of PSQI. This study shows that Turkish version of MESSi is valid and reliable for use in adolescents. Three-factor MESSi provides an advantage over other chronotype scales in adolescence since it includes DI subscale as well as MA and EV subscales. Psychometric results were supported by other chronotype scales and clinical features such as sleep, affect, and personality.

Objectives:Substance Use Risk Profile scale (SURPS) measuring the personality traits associated with susceptibility to substance use is a valid and reliable questionnaire. In the validity and reliability study of the Turkish adaptation for SURPS, the factor structure was determined by the explanatory factor analysis but the theoretical suitability of this structure to the personality traits (anxiety sensitivity, lack of self-contentment, sensation seeking and impulsivity) could not be confirmed. In this study, it was aimed to test the theoretical suitability of the factor structure by confirmatory factor analysis (CFA).Materials and Methods:The universe of our study was the sample consisting of 875 adolescents aged between 14 and 19 years with a mean age of 15.58 (±1.03) years for the Turkish validity and reliability study of the SURPS. The sample of our study was determined as 436 adolescents chosen from participants in the universe by stratified sampling method. IBM AMOS ver. 23.0 program was used in the verification of the factor structure of the 23-item 4-factor scale with CFA. In evaluating the fit of the model, chi-square/degree of freedom (chi-square/sd), Goodness of Fit index (GFI), Adjusted Goodness of test (AGFI) and root mean square of error approximation (RMSEA) goodness of fit indices were calculated.Results:Standardized factor loads obtained with CFA were found between 0.31 and 0.86. In order to further improve the fit of the model, the relationship between errors related to the items 7 and 23, and 3 and 12 suggested by the modification indexes was defined. The chi-square/sd, RMSEA, GFI and AGFI values from calculated goodness of fit indices were determined as 3.305, 0.058, 0.91 and 0.89, respectively.Conclusion:With our findings, it was observed that the model showed a good fit with the theory, and the construct validity of the 23-item 4-factor scale was supported.

INTRODUCTION[|]In addition to the relationship between substance use and personality, the personality traits such as hopelessness, anxiety sensitivity, impulsivity, and sensation seeking are known to be particularly predictive of later substance misuse. These personality traits can be used as markers to provide early prevention intervention against substance use disorders. The present study aims to evaluate the relationship of the personality traits to substance use disorders (SUDs).[¤]METHODS[|]The sample for the first analysis consisted of 13-18-year-old outpatients with SUDs (n=30), outpatients with any psychiatric disorders other than SUDs (n=30), and community-based non-matched healthy controls (n=30). And then, the analysis for comparison among SUDs patient group and another healthy control group matched for age and sex (n=30) was repeated to minimize bias because of the gender heterogeneity in the groups. Substance abuse-related personality traits were measured with the Substance Use Risk Profile Scale (SURPS). Also, Beck Hopelessness Scale, the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, Barratt Impulsivity Scale and Arnett Inventory of Sensation Seeking were used as data collection tools. Using independent samples t-test or one-way ANOVA and Tukey posthoc tests among two or more groups, the relationship was evaluated.[¤]RESULTS[|]Results show that there is no clear relationship between substance use disorders, and substance abuse-related personality traits measured by SURPS, with significant limitations. [¤]DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION[|]Our study is the first study assessing this relationship in a sample of Turkish adolescents. Further studies should be planned to determine whether the result of our study reflects objective reality or is affected by the limitations. [¤]

This study aimed to examine demographic and clinical variables, psychiatric comorbidities, the prevalence of psychotropic drug use, relationships between drug use, demographic and clinical variables, and predictors of drug use in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) admitted to a training and research hospital outpatient clinic. Four hundred and eleven children with ASD admitted to the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Dr. Sami Ulus Maternity and Children's Health and Diseases Training and Research Hospital, between October 1, 2019 and December 31, 2019, were retrospectively reviewed. Demographic and clinical variables, psychiatric comorbidities, and characteristics of drug use for the cases were recorded. Psychotropic drug use was found in 34.3% (n = 141) of the cases. Our results revealed male sex and psychiatric comorbidity as predictors of psychotropic drug use. Antipsychotics were the most prescribed drugs, and the most common psychiatric comorbidity was conduct disorder. Also, children with ASD who had been toilet-trained, and could express sentences but were illiterate, were using psychotropic drugs more often than others. Future multicentered, large clinic-based studies from training and research hospitals should focus on trends of treatment in psychiatric comorbidities accompanying ASD, and constitute a systematic approach for the psychopharmacological treatment of these cases.

The Substance Use Risk Profile Scale (SURPS) was developed as a self-report measure to screen four high-risk personality dimensions (hopelessness, anxiety sensitivity, impulsivity, and sensation seeking) that predict specific patterns of vulnerability to substance use and other problematic behavior. The scale has previously been shown to have adequate psychometric properties in various other languages. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Turkish version of the SURPS. A cross-sectional total sampling design was adopted in which 875 Turkish participants took part (mean age 15.58 years, SD = 1.03). Using exploratory factor and correlational analyses, the internal consistency, test–retest reliability, construct validity, and concurrent validity were evaluated. The SURPS demonstrated good psychometric and construct validity. The results provide clear evidence that the Turkish version of the SURPS is valid and reliable. The Turkish version of the SURPS may become an important tool for daily clinical practice and clinical research.
