Abstract

We introduce the Alternating Reading Task (ART) Corpus, a collection of dyadic sentence reading for studying the entrainment and imitation behaviour in speech communication. The ART corpus features three experimental conditions - solo reading, alternating reading, and deliberate imitation - as well as three sub-corpora encompassing French-, Italian-, and Slovak-accented English. This design allows systematic investigation of speech entrainment in a controlled and less-spontaneous setting. Alongside detailed transcriptions, it includes English proficiency scores, demographics, and in-experiment questionnaires for probing linguistic, personal and interpersonal influences on entrainment. Abstract

Excess nutrient pollution contributes to the formation of harmful algal blooms (HABs) that compromise fisheries and recreation and that can directly endanger human and animal health via cyanotoxins. Efforts to quantify the occurrence, drivers, and severity of HABs across large areas is difficult due to the resource intensive nature of field monitoring of lake nutrient and chlorophyll‐a concentrations. To better characterize how nutrients interact with other environmental factors to produce algal blooms in freshwater systems, we used spatially explicit and temporally matched climate, landscape, in‐lake characteristic, and nutrient inventory data sets to predict nutrients and chlorophyll‐a across the conterminous US (CONUS). Using a nested modeling approach, three random forest (RF) models were trained to explain the spatiotemporal variation in total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), and chlorophyll‐a concentrations across US EPA's National Lakes Assessment (n = 2,062). Concentrations of TN and TP were the most important predictors and, with other variables, the RF model accounted for 68% of variation in chlorophyll‐a. We then used these RF models to extrapolate lake TN and TP predictions to lakes without nutrient observations and predict chlorophyll‐a for ∼112,000 lakes across the CONUS. Risk for high chlorophyll‐a concentrations is highest in the agriculturally dominated Midwest, but other areas of risk emerge in nutrient pollution hot spots across the country. These catchment and lake‐specific results can help managers identify potential nutrient pollution and chlorophyll‐a hot spots that may fuel blooms, prioritize at‐risk lakes for additional monitoring, and optimize management to protect human health and other environmental end goals. Plain Language Summary: When lakes receive large amounts of nutrients from the surrounding landscape due to fertilizer runoff or other sources of nutrient pollution, they can develop algal blooms. Algal blooms are harmful to the lake ecosystem and sometimes produce toxins which are dangerous to humans and animals. To assess this issue, lake chlorophyll‐a, a measure of algal presence, is monitored. This monitoring is limited in reach due to the expense of in‐lake sampling and the limited resolution of satellite technology. However, there is a wealth of climate, nutrient, landscape, and in‐lake characteristic data for the conterminous US (CONUS) which explains much of what contributes to nutrient pollution and algal growth. Here, we use this data in a machine learning model to predict nutrient (total nitrogen and total phosphorus) and chlorophyll‐a concentrations in about 112,000 lakes in the CONUS. We found that high chlorophyll‐a concentrations are more likely in the Midwest where agriculture is prevalent, but other areas with high lake chlorophyll‐a concentrations are present across the CONUS in nutrient pollution hot spots. These predictions of lake nutrient and chlorophyll‐a concentrations can help managers identify areas of concern, prioritize at‐risk lakes for testing, and target management to protect human health and the environment. Abstract

The aim of the study was to identify how education actors of two historically and culturally different countries - Slovakia and England - thought about the concept 'inclusive school'. The Q-methodology was used for this purpose, yielding 7 descriptions of inclusive school. The results indicated two facts: 1) there is a jointly shared semantic field that can be interpreted as a consequence of globalization trends in education, and 2) perceptions of inclusive education are influenced by the history of educational systems in the countries studied. Research findings confirm that despite a certain convergence trend, a local discourse still remains the crucial determining factor of the conceptual grasp of this issue. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

45. SHIFTING INPUTS AND TRANSFORMATIONS OF NITROGEN IN FORESTED AND MIXED LAND USE BASINS: IMPLICATIONS FOR HYDROLOGIC NITROGEN LOSS

Abstract

Increased N inputs along with changes in population, land use, and climate have globally altered the N cycle. This alteration has been associated with increased food, energy, and fiber availability, but has also contributed to the degradation of human health conditions and diminishment of expected ecosystem services in many regions throughout the world. In this context, my research explored the impact of shifting anthropogenic N inputs and other environmental drivers on terrestrial N surpluses and linked changes in terrestrial surpluses to observed changes in N loss to aquatic systems. Working in both forested and mixed land use catchments in the eastern USA, I hypothesized that processes that reduced terrestrial N surpluses in catchments by 1) reducing N inputs, 2) increasing plant uptake, and/or 3) increasing gaseous efflux would result in decreased hydrologic N export. Identification of potential processes was accomplished by first generating long-term atmospheric, remote sensing, terrestrial, and hydrologic datasets for individual catchments. The first two components of my dissertation highlighted potential interactions between atmospheric N deposition, acidic deposition, climate, and disturbance in influencing terrestrial N availability, as indicated by N isotopes in tree rings, in forested catchments. Leveraging trend analysis and statistical models, I identified continued long-term declines in terrestrial N availability in forests, but this decline was likely being modified by disturbance and long-term reductions in acidic deposition. The final component of my dissertation involved developing a lumped conceptual model to explain water quality trends in three mixed land use catchments within the Chesapeake Bay watershed. This study assessed the relative influence of point source N loading, agricultural practices, and atmospheric N deposition on long-term trends in riverine N loss. Insights from the simple N loading model strongly suggested that declines in atmospheric N deposition and point source loading were key drivers of historical water quality improvement. Whether relying on quasi-mass balances or dendroisotopic records, findings from this research emphasize the usefulness of constructing proxy datasets of terrestrial N surpluses in identifying likely processes driving changes in hydrologic N loss in forested and mixed land use catchments.
