Here we examine the role of the amorphous insulating substrate in the thermal relaxation in thin NbN, InO$_x$, and Au/Ni films at temperatures above 5 K. The studied samples are made up of metal bridges on an amorphous insulating layer lying on or suspended above a crystalline substrate. Noise thermometry was used to measure the electron temperature $T_e$ of the films as a function of Joule power per unit of area $P_{2D}$. In all samples, we observe the dependence $P_{2D}\propto T_e^n$ with the exponent $n\simeq 2$, which is inconsistent with both electron-phonon coupling and Kapitza thermal resistance. In suspended samples, the functional dependence of $P_{2D}(T_e)$ on the length of the amorphous insulating layer is consistent with the linear $T$-dependence of the thermal conductivity, which is related to lattice excitations (diffusons) for the phonon mean free path smaller than the dominant phonon wavelength. All non-interacting two-dimensional electronic systems are expected to exhibit an insulating ground state. This conspicuous absence of the metallic phase has been challenged only in the case of low-disorder, low density, semiconducting systems where strong interactions dominate the electronic state. Unexpectedly, over the last two decades, there have been multiple reports on the observation of a state with metallic characteristics on a variety of thin-film superconductors. To date, no theoretical explanation has been able to fully capture the existence of such a state for the large variety of superconductors exhibiting it. Here we show that for two very different thin-film superconductors, amorphous indium-oxide and a single-crystal of 2H-NbSe2, this metallic state can be eliminated by filtering external radiation. Our results show that these superconducting films are extremely sensitive to external perturbations leading to the suppression of superconductivity and the appearance of temperature independent, metallic like, transport at low temperatures. Topological Josephson junctions designed on the surface of a 3D-topological insulator (TI) harbor Majorana bound states (MBS's) among a continuum of conventional Andreev bound states. The distinct feature of these MBS's lies in the $4\pi$-periodicity of their energy-phase relation that yields a fractional ac Josephson effect and a suppression of odd Shapiro steps under $r\!f$ irradiation. Yet, recent experiments showed that a few, or only the first, odd Shapiro steps are missing, casting doubts on the interpretation. Here, we show that Josephson junctions tailored on the large bandgap 3D TI Bi$_2$Se$_3$ exhibit a fractional ac Josephson effect acting on the first Shapiro step only. With a modified resistively shunted junction model, we demonstrate that the resilience of higher order odd Shapiro steps can be accounted for by thermal poisoning driven by Joule overheating. Furthermore, we uncover a residual supercurrent at the nodes between Shapiro lobes, which provides a direct and novel signature of the current carried by the MBS. Our findings showcase the crucial role of thermal effects in topological Josephson junctions and lend support to the Majorana origin of the partial suppression of odd Shapiro steps., Comment: Revised article and Supplemental material

We have fabricated planar amorphous Indium Oxide superconducting resonators ($T_c\sim2.8$ K) that are sensitive to frequency-selective radiation in the range of 7 to 10 GHz. Those values lay far below twice the superconducting gap that worths about 200 GHz. The photons detection consists in a shift of the fundamental resonance frequency. We show that the detected frequency can be adjusted by modulating the total length of the superconducting resonator. We attribute those observations to the excitation of higher-order resonance modes. The coupling between the fundamental lumped and the higher order distributed resonance is due to the kinetic inductance non-linearity with current. Strongly disordered superconductors in a magnetic field display many characteristic properties of type-II superconductivity--- except at low temperatures where an anomalous linear $T$-dependence of the resistive critical field $B_{c2}$ is routinely observed. This behavior violates the conventional theory of superconductivity, and its origin remains a long-standing puzzle. Here we report on systematic measurements of the critical magnetic field and current on amorphous indium oxide films of various levels of disorder. Surprisingly, our measurements show that the $B_{c2}$ anomaly near zero-temperature is accompanied by a clear mean-field like scaling behavior of the critical current. We demonstrate theoretically that these are consequences of the vortex-glass ground state and its thermal fluctuations. This theory further predicts the linear-$T$ anomaly to occur in films as well as bulk superconductors with a slope that depends on the normal-state sheet resistance---in agreement with experimental data. We report a study of the relaxation time of the restoration of the resistive superconducting state in single crystalline boron-doped diamond using amplitude-modulated absorption of (sub-)THz radiation (AMAR). The films grown on an insulating diamond substrate have a low carrier density of about 2.5x10^{21} cm^{-3} and a critical temperature of about 2 K. By changing the modulation frequency we find a high-frequency rolloff which we associate with the characterstic time of energy relaxation between the electron and the phonon systems or the relaxation time for nonequilibrium superconductivity. Our main result is that the electron-phonon scattering time varies clearly as T^{-2}, over the accessible temperature range of 1.7 to 2.2 K. In addition, we find, upon approaching the critical temperature T_c, evidence for an increasing relaxation time on both sides of T_c., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, 61 references

We conducted a systematic study of the disorder dependence of the termination of superconductivity, at high magnetic fields (B), of amorphous indium oxide films. Our lower disorder films show conventional behavior where superconductivity is terminated with a transition to a metallic state at a well-defined critical field, Bc2. Our higher disorder samples undergo a B-induced transition into a strongly insulating state, which terminates at higher B's forming an insulating peak. We demonstrate that the B terminating this peak coincides with Bc2 of the lower disorder samples. Additionally we show that, beyond this field, these samples enter a different insulating state in which the magnetic field dependence of the resistance is weak. In superconductors the zero-resistance current-flow is protected from dissipation at finite temperatures (T) by virtue of the short-circuit condition maintained by the electrons that remain in the condensed state. The recently suggested finite-T insulator and the "superinsulating" phase are different because any residual mechanism of conduction will eventually become dominant as the finite-T insulator sets-in. If the residual conduction is small it may be possible to observe the transition to these intriguing states. We show that the conductivity of the high magnetic-field insulator terminating superconductivity in amorphous indium-oxide exhibits an abrupt drop, and seem to approach a zero conductance at T<0.04 K. We discuss our results in the light of theories that lead to a finite-T insulator.

We report a novel method for the fabrication of superconducting nanodevices based on niobium. The well-known difficulties of lithographic patterning of high-quality niobium are overcome by replacing the usual organic resist mask by a metallic one. The quality of the fabrication procedure is demonstrated by the realization and characterization of long and narrow superconducting lines and niobium-gold-niobium proximity SQUIDs.

Graphene on a dielectric substrate exhibits spatial doping inhomogeneities, forming electron-hole puddles. Understanding and controlling the latter is of crucial importance for unraveling many of graphene's fundamental properties at the Dirac point. Here we show the coexistence and correlation of charge puddles and topographic ripples in graphene decoupled from the metallic substrate it was grown on. The analysis of interferences of Dirac fermion-like electrons yields a linear dispersion relation, indicating that graphene on a metal can recover its intrinsic electronic properties., Comment: 4 figures

We report transport measurements through graphene on SrTiO3 substrates as a function of magnetic field B, carrier density n, and temperature T. The large dielectric constant of SrTiO3 screens very effectively long-range electron-electron interactions and potential fluctuations, making Dirac electrons in graphene virtually non-interacting. The absence of interactions results in a unexpected behavior of the longitudinal resistance in the N=0 Landau level, and in a large suppression of the transport gap in nano-ribbons. The "bulk" transport properties of graphene at B=0T, on the contrary, are completely unaffected by the substrate dielectric constant., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Three-dimensional topological insulators are characterized by the presence of a bandgap in their bulk and gapless Dirac fermions at their surfaces. New physical phenomena originating from the presence of the Dirac fermions are predicted to occur, and to be experimentally accessible via transport measurements in suitably designed electronic devices. Here we study transport through superconducting junctions fabricated on thin Bi2Se3 single crystals, equipped with a gate electrode. In the presence of perpendicular magnetic field B, sweeping the gate voltage enables us to observe the filling of the Dirac fermion Landau levels, whose character evolves continuously from electron- to hole-like. When B=0, a supercurrent appears, whose magnitude can be gate tuned, and is minimum at the charge neutrality point determined from the Landau level filling. Our results demonstrate how gated nano-electronic devices give control over normal and superconducting transport of Dirac fermions at an individual surface of a three-dimensional topological insulator., Comment: 28 pages, 5 figures

The most profound effect of disorder on electronic systems is the localization of the electrons transforming an otherwise metallic system into an insulator. If the metal is also a superconductor then, at low temperatures, disorder can induce a dramatic transition from a superconducting into an insulating state. An outstanding question is whether the route to insulating behavior proceeds via the direct localization of Cooper pairs or, alternatively, by a two-step process in which the Cooper pairing is first destroyed followed by the standard localization of single electrons. Here we address this question by studying the local superconducting gap of a highly disordered, amorphous, superconductor by means of scanning tunneling spectroscopy. Our measurements reveal that, in the vicinity of the superconductor-insulator transition, the coherence peaks in the one-particle density of states disappear while the superconducting gap remains intact indicating the presence of localized Cooper pairs. We report on a study of magnetotransport in LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interfaces characterized by mobilities of the order of several thousands cm$^{2}$/Vs. We observe Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations that indicate a two-dimensional character of the Fermi surface. The frequency of the oscillations signals a multiple sub-bands occupation in the quantum well or a multiple valley configuration. From the temperature dependence of the oscillation amplitude we extract an effective carrier mass $m^{*}\simeq1.45$\,$m_{e}$. A superconducting state is characterized by the gap in the electronic density of states which vanishes at the superconducting transition temperature Tc. It was discovered that in high temperature superconductors a noticeable depression in the density of states still remains even at temperatures above Tc; this feature being called pseudogap. Here we show that a pseudogap exists in a conventional superconductor: ultrathin titanium nitride films over a wide range of temperatures above Tc. Our study reveals that this pseudogap state is induced by superconducting fluctuations and favored by two-dimensionality and by the proximity to the transition to the insulating state. A general character of the observed phenomenon provides a powerful tool to discriminate between fluctuations as the origin of the pseudogap state, and other contributions in the layered high temperature superconductor compounds., Comment: 26 pages, 4 figures

Scanning tunneling spectroscopy at very low temperature on homogeneously disordered superconducting Titanium Nitride thin films reveals strong spatial inhomogeneities of the superconducting gap $\Delta$ in the density of states. Upon increasing disorder, we observe suppression of the superconducting critical temperature $T_c$ towards zero, enhancement of spatial fluctuations in $\Delta$, and growth of the $\Delta/T_c$ ratio. We report low-temperature magnetisation measurements on a large number of purified ropes of single wall carbon nanotubes. In spite of a large superparamagnetic contribution due to the small ferromagnetic catalytical particles still present in the sample, at low temperature ($T < 0.5K$) and low magnetic field ($H < 80 Oe$), a diamagnetic signal is detectable. This low temperature diamagnetism can be interpreted as the Meissner effect in ropes of carbon nanotubes which have previously been shown to exhibit superconductivity from transport measurements., Comment: 10 pages 3 figures

We present the first scanning tunneling spectroscopy study of single-crystalline boron doped diamond. The measurements were performed below 100 mK with a low temperature scanning tunneling microscope. The tunneling density of states displays a clear superconducting gap. The temperature evolution of the order parameter follows the weak coupling BCS law with $\Delta(0)/k_B T_c \simeq 1.74$.
