Abstract

We suggest a general framework for compactifing quasi-projective Lagrangian fibrations of geometric origin by holomorphic symplectic varieties. This framework includes a compactification criterion, which we then apply to various fibrations of geometric origin, and a discussion on holomorphic forms that are defined via correspondences in geometric examples. As application, we show that given a Lagrangian fibration $X \to B$ admitting local sections over an open subset $V$ with codimension $\ge 2$ complement, there exists a (possibly singular) holomorphic symplectic compactification of the Albanese fibration $A \to V$ (which we show exists as a smooth commutative algebraic group with connected fibers acting on $X_{V}$), as well as of any other torsor over $A$, or over any smooth commutative group scheme over $B$ with connected fibers that is isogenous to $A$., Comment: 24 pages, comments welcomed! Abstract

The considerable body of data available for evaluating biometric recognition systems in Research and Development (R\&D) environments has contributed to the increasingly common problem of target performance mismatch. Biometric algorithms are frequently tested against data that may not reflect the real world applications they target. From a Testing and Evaluation (T\&E) standpoint, this domain mismatch causes difficulty assessing when improvements in State-of-the-Art (SOTA) research actually translate to improved applied outcomes. This problem can be addressed with thoughtful preparation of data and experimental methods to reflect specific use-cases and scenarios. To that end, this paper evaluates research solutions for identifying individuals at ranges and altitudes, which could support various application areas such as counterterrorism, protection of critical infrastructure facilities, military force protection, and border security. We address challenges including image quality issues and reliance on face recognition as the sole biometric modality. By fusing face and body features, we propose developing robust biometric systems for effective long-range identification from both the ground and steep pitch angles. Preliminary results show promising progress in whole-body recognition. This paper presents these early findings and discusses potential future directions for advancing long-range biometric identification systems based on mission-driven metrics.

Abstract

Generalizing work of Markushevich--Tikhomirov and Arbarello--Sacc\`a--Ferretti, we use relative Prym varieties to construct Lagrangian fibered symplectic varieties in infinitely many dimensions. We then give criteria for when the construction yields primitive symplectic varieties, respectively, irreducible symplectic varieties. The starting point of the construction is a K3 surface endowed with an anti-symplectic involution and an effective linear system on the quotient surface. We give sufficient conditions on the linear system to ensure that the relative Prym varieties satisfy the criteria above. Abstract

Analogue test structures were fabricated using the Tower Partners Semiconductor Co. CMOS 65 nm ISC process. The purpose was to characterise and qualify this process and to optimise the sensor for the next generation of Monolithic Active Pixels Sensors for high-energy physics. The technology was explored in several variants which differed by: doping levels, pixel geometries and pixel pitches (10-25 $\mu$m). These variants have been tested following exposure to varying levels of irradiation up to 3 MGy and $10^{16}$ 1 MeV n$_\text{eq}$ cm$^{-2}$. Here the results from prototypes that feature direct analogue output of a 4$\times$4 pixel matrix are reported, allowing the systematic and detailed study of charge collection properties. Measurements were taken both using $^{55}$Fe X-ray sources and in beam tests using minimum ionizing particles. The results not only demonstrate the feasibility of using this technology for particle detection but also serve as a reference for future applications and optimisations.

Abstract

The face expression is the first thing we pay attention to when we want to understand a person's state of mind. Thus, the ability to recognize facial expressions in an automatic way is a very interesting research field. In this paper, because the small size of available training datasets, we propose a novel data augmentation technique that improves the performances in the recognition task. We apply geometrical transformations and build from scratch GAN models able to generate new synthetic images for each emotion type. Thus, on the augmented datasets we fine tune pretrained convolutional neural networks with different architectures. To measure the generalization ability of the models, we apply extra-database protocol approach, namely we train models on the augmented versions of training dataset and test them on two different databases. Abstract

The Extreme Universe Space Observatory on a Super Pressure Balloon 1 (EUSO-SPB1) was launched in 2017 April from Wanaka, New Zealand. The plan of this mission of opportunity on a NASA super pressure balloon test flight was to circle the southern hemisphere. The primary scientific goal was to make the first observations of ultra-high-energy cosmic-ray extensive air showers (EASs) by looking down on the atmosphere with an ultraviolet (UV) fluorescence telescope from suborbital altitude (33~km). After 12~days and 4~hours aloft, the flight was terminated prematurely in the Pacific Ocean. Before the flight, the instrument was tested extensively in the West Desert of Utah, USA, with UV point sources and lasers. The test results indicated that the instrument had sensitivity to EASs of approximately 3 EeV. Simulations of the telescope system, telescope on time, and realized flight trajectory predicted an observation of about 1 event assuming clear sky conditions. The effects of high clouds were estimated to reduce this value by approximately a factor of 2. A manual search and a machine-learning-based search did not find any EAS signals in these data. Abstract

We continue our study of fixed loci of antisymplectic involutions on projective hyper-K\"ahler manifolds of $\mathrm{K3}^{[n]}$-type induced by an ample class of square 2 in the Beauville-Bogomolov-Fujiki lattice. We prove that if the divisibility of the ample class is 2, then one connected component of the fixed locus is a Fano manifold of index 3, thus generalizing to higher dimensions the case of the LLSvS 8-fold associated to a cubic fourfold. We also show that, in the case of the LLSvS 8-fold associated to a cubic fourfold, the second component of the fixed locus is of general type, thus answering a question by Manfred Lehn., Comment: 35 pages

Abstract

This survey is a continuation of the study undertaken in \cite{AS18}. We examine the local structure of Bridgeland moduli spaces $M_\sigma(v,\D)$, where the relevant triangulated category $\D$ is either the bounded derived category $\D=\D^b(X)$ of a K3 surface $X$, or the Kuznetsov component $\D=\Ku(Y)\subset \D ^b(Y)$ of a smooth cubic fourfold $Y\subset \PP^5$. For these moduli spaces, building on \cite{Bmm19}, \cite{Bmm21} we give a direct proof of formality and, using their local isomorphism with quiver varieties, we establish their normality and their irreducibility, as long as $\sigma$ does not lie on a totally semistable wall. We then connect the variation of GIT quotients for quiver varieties with the changing of stability conditions on moduli spaces.

25. Moduli spaces on Kuznetsov components are Irreducible Symplectic Varieties

Abstract

This article studies moduli spaces of Bridgeland semistable objects in the Kuznetsov component of a cubic fourfold that don't admit a symplectic resolution, i.e., moduli spaces of objects with non-primitve Mukai vector v=mv_0 that is not of OG10-type and where v_0^2 >0. For a generic stability condition, it is shown that these moduli spaces are projective irreducible symplectic varieties with factorial terminal singularities and that their deformation class is uniquely determined by the integers m and v_0^2. On the one hand, this generalizes the results of arXiv:1703.10839, arXiv:1912.06935, arXiv:2007.14108, which deal with moduli spaces of objects in the Kuznetsov component of a cubic fourfold which are smooth or of OG10-type; on the other hand, this extends to the Kuznetsov component of a cubic fourfold the results of arXiv:1802.01182, arXiv:2012.10649, on Gieseker moduli spaces of sheaves on K3 surfaces with non-primitive Mukai vector., Comment: 28 pages, comments welcome! Abstract

We show that the hyper-K\"ahler varieties of OG10-type constructed by Laza-Sacc\`a-Voisin (LSV) verify the Lefschetz standard conjecture. This is an application of a more general result, stating that certain Lagrangian fibrations verify this conjecture. The main technical assumption of this general result is that the Lagrangian fibration satisfies the hypotheses of Ng\^o's support theorem. Verifying that the LSV tenfolds do satisfy those hypotheses is of independent interest. Another point of independent interest of the paper is the definition and the study of the Lefschetz standard conjecture in the relative setting, and its relation to the classical absolute case., Comment: 27 pages, comments welcome

Abstract

Background and objective: No clear-cut markers for predicting positive sperm retrieval (+SR) at microdissection testicular sperm extraction (mTESE) have been identified thus far. Our aim was to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the ability of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), inhibin B (InhB), and anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) to predict +SR in men with nonobstructive azoospermia (NOA) undergoing mTESE. Methods: We performed a search in the PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Scopus databases according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-analysis statement. Thirty-four publications were selected for inclusion in the analysis. Key findings and limitations: Overall, the mean +SR rate was 45%. Pooled standardized mean difference (SMD) values revealed significant hormonal differences between the +SR and −SR groups, with lower FSH (SMD −0.30), higher InhB (SMD 0.54), and lower AMH (SMD −0.56) levels in the +SR group. Pooled odds ratios (Ors) revealed no significant prediction of +SR by either FSH (OR 1.03, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.00–1.06) or InhB (OR 1.01, 95% CI 1.00–1.02), despite variations in baseline levels and study heterogeneity. Conversely, AMH had significant predictive value (OR 0.82, 95% CI 0.73–0.92), with lower baseline levels in the +SR group. InhB and FSH levels were higher in the +SR group, while InhB exhibited the opposite trend. Conclusions and clinical implications: Despite study heterogeneity, our meta-analysis findings support the ability of AMH to predict +SR for men with NOA undergoing mTESE. Patient summary: We conducted a review and analysis of results from previous studies. Our findings show that for men with an infertility condition called nonobstructive azoospermia, blood levels of anti-Müllerian hormone can predict successful extraction of sperm using a microsurgical technique. Levels of two other hormones did not predict successful sperm extraction.

Abstract

Abstract Objective The dentato‐thalamo‐cortical tract (DTT) is the main cerebellar efferent pathway. Degeneration of the DTT is a core feature of Friedreich ataxia (FRDA). However, it remains unclear whether DTT disruption is spatially specific, with some segments being more impacted than others. This study aimed to investigate microstructural integrity along the DTT in FRDA using a profilometry diffusion MRI (dMRI) approach. Methods MRI data from 45 individuals with FRDA (mean age: 33.2 ± 13.2, Male/Female: 26/19) and 37 healthy controls (mean age: 36.5 ± 12.7, Male/Female:18/19) were included in this cross‐sectional multicenter study. A profilometry analysis was performed on dMRI data by first using tractography to define the DTT as the white matter pathway connecting the dentate nucleus to the contralateral motor cortex. The tract was then divided into 100 segments, and dMRI metrics of microstructural integrity (fractional anisotropy, mean diffusivity and radial diffusivity) at each segment were compared between groups. The process was replicated on the arcuate fasciculus for comparison. Results Across all diffusion metrics, the region of the DTT connecting the dentate nucleus and thalamus was more impacted in FRDA than downstream cerebral sections from the thalamus to the cortex. The arcuate fasciculus was minimally impacted. Interpretation Our study further expands the current knowledge about brain involvement in FRDA, showing that microstructural abnormalities within the DTT are weighted to early segments of the tract (i.e., the superior cerebellar peduncle). These findings are consistent with the hypothesis of DTT undergoing anterograde degeneration arising from the dentate nuclei and progressing to the primary motor cortex.

Abstract

In the title compound, [Co(C10H16O4)]n, the CoII atom is bonded in a slightly distorted tetrahedral environment by four O atoms from the bridging sebacate dications, comprising two separate half-ligands which lie across crystallographic inversion centres. In the three-dimensional network coordination polymer, there are two different spatial extensions of CoII atoms, one with the CoII atoms lying parallel to (100) [Co...Co = 4.653 (1) Å], the other lying parallel to (010) [Co...Co = 4.764 (1) Å].

Abstract

The EMA Qualification of Novel Methodologies procedure qualifies methods, technologies and methodologies within a well-defined context of use in a pharma R&D context based on the evaluation of the presented scientific rationale and submitted data. This policy brief analyses QoNM submissions providing policy messages and recommendations to stakeholders on how to better prepare qualification applications in this regard. The recommendations include: 1. Grounding validation strategy using a current standard measure or a distribution technique. 2. Accurately represent pertinent subgroups via accurate inclusion and exclusion criteria. 3. Establish a well-defined and specific CoU with clear descriptions of the use within a development program target population and disease stage. Lastly, it emphasizes role of the QoNM procedure in advancing medicine development methodologies within the EU.

Abstract

This study reports the first co-infection of Angiostrongylus vasorum and Dirofilaria immitis, two nematodes affecting canid cardiopulmonary systems, in golden jackals (Canis aureus) in Italy. Data on golden jackal carcasses, recovered in Friuli Venezia Giulia (Italy) from 2020 to 2023, were recorded using InfoFaunaFVG wildlife monitoring network. Out of 60 necropsied golden jackals, 24 tested positive for either pathogen, with 3 animals displaying co-infection. Pathological findings included verminous pneumonia, abdominal and thoracic bleeding, and adult individuals in the heart and pulmonary arteries. The recent expansion of the golden jackal in northern Italy may favour the establishment and spread of these nematodes, posing challenges for disease containment and surveillance. Given the increasing prevalence of angiostrongylosis and cardiopulmonary dirofilariosis in Europe, health monitoring of wild canids is essential to reduce their potential impact.
