Abstract

Abstract Wind energy being a free source of energy is becoming popular over the past decades and is being studied extensively. Integration of wind turbines is now being expanded to urban and offshore settings in contrast to the conventional wind farms in relatively open areas. The direct installation of wind turbines poses a potential risk, as it may result in financial losses in scenarios characterized by inadequate wind resource availability. Therefore, wind energy availability analysis in such urban environments is a necessity. This research paper presents an in‐depth investigation conducted to predict the exploitable wind energy at four distinct locations within Nottingham, United Kingdom. Subsequently, the most suitable location, Clifton Campus at Nottingham Trent University, is identified where a comprehensive comparative analysis of power generation from eleven different wind turbine models is performed. The findings derived from this analysis suggest that the QR6 wind turbine emerges as the optimal choice for subsequent experimental investigations to be conducted in partnership with Nottingham Trent University. Furthermore, this study explores the selection of an appropriate probability density function for assessing wind potential considering seven different distributions namely, Gamma, Weibull, Rayleigh, Log‐normal, Genextreme, Gumbel, and Normal. Ultimately, the Weibull probability distribution is selected, and various methodologies are employed to estimate its parameters, which are then ranked using statistical assessments.

3. Impact of Inflammatory Bowel Disease on Student Experience in Postsecondary Education

Abstract

Objectives: This literature review seeks to identify based on the current literature how the burden of disease for IBD patients manifests itself as this cohort transitions simultaneously from pediatric to adult care and from secondary to post-secondary education. Methods: This paper reviews the current literature regarding postsecondary students with IBD and provides a summary of research regarding key factors in their quality of experience. The research was conducted through databases including Taylor & Francis, PubMed, as well as searches via Google Scholar. Results: Over the course of this search, thirty-three relevant studies were identified. These studies addressed the themes outlined in this paper, including academic performance, social adaptation, transition of care, as well as overall transition to a postsecondary institution. Each of these is further broken down to identify specific determinants of IBD student experience. Conclusions: Although students with IBD can demonstrate resilience and adaptive behavior, the evidence suggests there are significant limitations impacting their perceived experience. The barriers IBD students face impact their ability to experience postsecondary education as they intend to, forcing them to adjust in adaptive or maladaptive manners. This review also attempts to generate possible solutions to specific barriers identified from current research, generating directions of action for students, physicians, and academic supports.

16. Pilot-Scale Enzymatic Conversion of Low Stability, High Free Fatty, Squid Oil to an Oxidatively Stable Astaxanthin-Rich Acylglyceride Oil Suitable for Nutritional Applications

Abstract

Squid viscera, a byproduct of squid processing, contains oil rich in omega-3 fatty acids (up to 10% by mass) and the antioxidant astaxanthin. However, its high free fatty acid (FFA) content compromises stability. To address this, pilot-scale (200 L) enzymatic re-esterification of squid oil using immobilized lipase (Lipozyme RMIM) was demonstrated, resulting in high acylglyceride yields. The processed oil was analyzed for oxidation kinetics and thermodynamics using Rancimat, fatty acid composition using GC, omega-3 fatty acid positional distribution in the acylglyceride product using 13C NMR, and astaxanthin content. Lipase treatment reduced FFA levels from 44% to 4% and increased acylglycerides to 93% in squid oil. This reduction in FFA was accompanied by significantly increased stability (0.06 to 18.9 h by Rancimat). The treated oil showed no loss in astaxanthin (194.1 µg/g) or omega-3 fatty acids, including docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). DHA remaining predominantly at sn-2 indicated that the naturally occurring positional distribution of this omega-3 FFA was retained in the product. Lipase treatment significantly enhanced oxidative stability, evidenced by improved thermodynamic parameters (Ea 94.15 kJ/mol, ΔH 91.09 kJ/mol, ΔS −12.6 J/mol K) and extended shelf life (IP25 74.42 days) compared to starting squid oil and commercial fish/squid oils lacking astaxanthin. Thus, lipase treatment offers an effective strategy for reducing FFA levels and producing oxidatively stable, astaxanthin-rich acylglyceride squid oil with DHA retained at the nutritionally favored sn-2 position.

19. Revising with Metacognition to Promote Writing Achievement: A Case Study

Abstract

This study examined the relationship between metacognitive revision and writing achievement in one instructor's developmental writing courses. Since American students often have had little strategic writing instruction in high school, they frequently come to college as non-proficient writers. By focusing on self-improvement rather than agonizing over the quality of the final product, struggling writers' fears and lack of confidence can be mitigated, allowing growth. Requiring students to revise their essays and explain these revisions may influence the likelihood of completing the stages of the writing process, including using feedback. Results indicated that students who received high scores in revision explanations often received higher scores on the final essays than their peers. Additionally, from the pre- to post-intervention attitudinal survey, student responses showed more positive feelings about writing, increased confidence in ability and self-efficacy, and greater interest in providing feedback to classmates. Despite these gains, fewer students at the end of the semester felt that feedback, revision and reflection affected their writing performance, suggesting feelings of frustration at the multi-faceted process.

37. Addressing Misperceptions of Underprepared Students: A Case Study at a Public American University

Abstract

This study examines faculty/staff perceptions of underprepared students as well as the experiences of these students in the college setting. Understanding that this crucial population has poor retention, we sought to understand who they were and how the faculty/staff felt about them in an effort to better serve them. While most students surveyed believed their professors wanted them to succeed and were interested in their learning, they also offered insight into areas where faculty could further assist their progress. Faculty/staff revealed both positive and negative feelings about underprepared students, often acknowledging feelings of helplessness when working with them. Through data analysis of surveys from both populations, we identified key areas of focus on which to build a professional development model. By bridging gaps in faculty/staff understanding through a faculty networking approach, we are working together to become more student-ready in addressing student needs wherever they fall, thus promoting student success and retention.

Abstract

Ipsilateral transient axillary lymphadenopathy is well-documented following COVID-19 mRNA vaccine administration. Recently, rare mammographic findings of breast tissue changes with co-existing lymphadenopathy have been documented. Current literature on isolated ipsilateral true breast parenchymal changes on diagnostic mammography in symptomatic patients following COVID-19 mRNA vaccine administration is limited. This is one of the first case reports that demonstrates isolated ipsilateral focal asymmetry 5 days after administration of COVID-19 mRNA vaccine followed by complete resolution of symptoms and focal asymmetry confirmed on follow up magnetic resonance imaging. These findings warrant the development of guidelines to reduce unnecessary invasive procedures as part of the workup for possible malignancy.

Abstract

Syringomatous adenoma of the nipple is a very rare benign tumor, with radiographic and clinical characteristics that are difficult to differentiate from malignant tumors. Less than 60 cases have been identified thus far and most studies have not included radiographic findings. As such, the neoplasm requires more characterization within the literature. The usual clinical presentation of syringomatous adenoma of the nipple is symptomatic with a solitary, unilateral nipple mass within the subareolar region which may be tender and/or painful and may cause nipple inversion or discharge. We present a case of a 43-year-old woman that is unique, as the patient was asymptomatic and only presented following standard screening mammography. Moreover, we offer further characterization of the neoplasm through documented imaging and histologic findings.
