Objective: We aimed to evaluate longitudinal changes in set-shifting and central coherence in a predominantly adolescent cohort with anorexia nervosa (AN) and to explore whether these factors predict long-term eating disorder outcomes., Method: Ninety-two female patients with AN (mean age: 16.2, range: 13-21 years) completed neurocognitive tests (Rey Complex Figure Test, Adapted Version of the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test) before and after 12 months of psychotherapeutic treatment (n = 45 Maudsley AN Treatment, MANTRa; n = 47 standard psychotherapy; groups not randomised). Eating disorder severity was assessed at baseline, after 6, 12 and 18 months., Results: Central coherence (indicated by an increase in the Rey Figure Style Index) and set-shifting (indicated by a reduction in the percentage of perseverative errors) significantly improved over the course of treatment, with similar outcomes across groups. Lower central coherence was associated with higher eating disorder severity. Individuals with lower baseline set-shifting ability tended to have worse eating disorder outcomes in the long-term. However, this trend did not reach statistical significance in a multilevel linear mixed model., Conclusions: Neurocognitive difficulties in adolescents and young adults with AN can improve after treatment. Interventions specifically addressing flexibility in thinking and behaviour may contribute to treatment success., (© 2024 The Author(s). Objectives: A rising incidence of eating disorders in the young population and limited effectiveness of available treatment approaches underscore the need for innovative therapies. This study explores therapists' perspectives regarding a promising new manualized psychotherapeutic treatment (MANTRa) for adolescents and young adults with anorexia nervosa (AN)., Methods: Semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted with 10 therapists (nine female) who provided 24-34 sessions of MANTRa per patient. Interview topics included positive and negative experiences with MANTRa in general, with the workbook and other components. Reflexive thematic analysis was used to interpret the data. Furthermore, written notes taken by the therapists after each sessions were analysed., Results: The thematic analysis revealed five overarching themes: (1) Variety of therapeutic tools and content elements included in the workbook; (2) Getting the therapeutic process going; (3) Flexibility in use of the workbook; (4) Impact of the scientific and multidisciplinary framework on quality assurance; (5) Formal design of the workbook. Therapists' case formulation letters to the patients were regarded as powerful tools to strengthen therapeutic alliance and promote recovery. In-depth therapists' training, regular supervision and a multi-professional treatment setting were important factors to ensure high treatment quality., Conclusions: The findings suggest how the MANTRa content (e.g. inclusion of additional therapeutic tools), the therapists' training and the format (e.g. provision of a digital version) can be improved to reach maximum impact. Therapists' formulation letters may be an effective therapeutic tool not only for AN but also across the spectrum of psychiatric disorders in adolescents and young adults., (© 2024 The Author(s). Objective: The aim of this study was examining the efficacy of the Maudsley Model of Anorexia Nervosa Treatment for Adolescents and Young Adults (MANTRa) compared to individual psychotherapy that can be considered as standard in Austria (TAU-O)., Method: In this cohort study, 92 patients between 13 and 21 years suffering from full-syndrome, atypical or weight-restored anorexia nervosa (AN) received either 24-34 individual MANTRa sessions (n = 45) or TAU-O (n = 47). Outcome variables were age- and sex-related BMI, eating disorder and comorbid psychopathology at 6-, 12- and 18-month post baseline as well as acceptability of treatment and therapeutic alliance., Results: Both treatments resulted in significant improvements in age- and sex related BMI and reductions in eating disorder and comorbid psychopathology over time with significant differences between groups in favour of MANTRa. The percentage of participants with fully remitted AN was significantly higher in the MANTRa group compared to TAU-O at 18-month follow-up (MANTRa: 46% vs. TAU-O: 16%, p = 0.006). Satisfaction with both treatments was high., Conclusions: MANTRa is an effective treatment programme for adolescents and young adults with AN. Objective: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) may have a lasting effect on the quality of life (QoL) of children and their parents. Children with ADHD as well as their parents report a lower QoL compared with healthy children and children with chronic diseases such as bronchial asthma. The primary objective of this study was to investigate the changes of QoL of children with ADHD and their parents' subjective well-being before and after starting pharmacotherapy. We used the appropriate KINDL questionnaire for assessing the children's QoL and the World Health Organization (WHO) Big Five Questionnaire for assessing parental well-being. Methods: We assessed the QoL and the parental well-being in 60 children and adolescents with ADHD between the ages of 6 and 12 years [mean age 8.7 years, (standard deviation = 1.8)], treated at the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry of the Medical University of Vienna. QoL was rated using the KINDL questionnaires , and parental well-being was assessed using the WHO Big Five Questionnaire (WHO-5) before and after starting pharmacotherapy. We used t -tests and three-way GLM-ANOVA (SPSS, version 22; IBM Corp.) for evaluating the statistical significance of pre-post differences. Results: The QoL of the children with ADHD and the subjective well-being of the parents improved significantly after introducing pharmacotherapy. Conclusions: Pharmacotherapy is recommended in children with clinically significant ADHD not only because it helps to improve the symptoms of ADHD, but also their QoL and the well-being of their parents.
