Abstract

The radiative decay of the Hoyle state is the doorway to the production of heavier elements in stellar environment. Here we report, an exclusive measurement of electric quadruple (E$_2$) transitions of the Hoyle state to the ground state of $^{12}$C through the $^{12}$C(p, p$^\prime$$\gamma$$\gamma$)$^{12}$C reaction. Triple coincidence measurement yields a value of radiative branching ratio $\Gamma_{rad}$/$\Gamma$ = 4.01 (30) $\times$ 10$^{-4}$. The result has been corroborated by an independent experiment based on the complete kinematical measurement $via.$ $^{12}$C(p, p$^\prime$)$^{12}$C reaction ($\Gamma_{rad}$/$\Gamma$ = 4.04 (30) $\times$ 10$^{-4}$). Using our results together with the currently adopted values of $\Gamma_{\pi}$(E$_0$)/$\Gamma$ and $\Gamma_{\pi}$($E_0$), the radiative width of the Hoyle state is found to be 3.75 (40) $\times$ 10$^{-3}$ eV. We emphasize here that our result is not in agreement with 34 $\%$ increase in the radiative decay width of the Hoyle state measured recently but consistent with the currently adopted value., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures Submitted to Phys. Abstract

ATHENA has been designed as a general purpose detector capable of delivering the full scientific scope of the Electron-Ion Collider. Careful technology choices provide fine tracking and momentum resolution, high performance electromagnetic and hadronic calorimetry, hadron identification over a wide kinematic range, and near-complete hermeticity. This article describes the detector design and its expected performance in the most relevant physics channels. It includes an evaluation of detector technology choices, the technical challenges to realizing the detector and the R&D required to meet those challenges.

Abstract

Dark energy stars research is an issue of great interest since recent astronomical observations with respect to measurements in distant supernovas, cosmic microwave background and weak gravitational lensing confirm that the universe is undergoing a phase of accelerated expansion and this cosmological behavior is caused by the presence of a cosmic fluid which has a strong negative pressure that allows to explain the expanding universe. In this paper, we obtained new relativistic stellar configurations within the framework of Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (EGB) gravity considering negative anisotropic pressures and the equation of state pr={\omega}\r{ho} where pr is the radial pressure, {\omega} is the dark energy parameter, and \r{ho} is the dark energy density. We have chosen a modified version of metric potential proposed by Korkina-Orlyanskii (1991). For the new solutions we checked that the radial pressure, metric coefficients, energy density and anisotropy are well defined and are regular in the interior of the star and are dependent of the values of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant. The solutions found can be used in the development of dark energy stars models satisfying all physical acceptability conditions, but the causality condition and strong energy condition cannot be satisfied., Comment: 26 pages, 10 figures

Abstract

Wolves use howls to maintain large territories, intra-pack communication and social bonding. Besides their physical presence, howls are also instrumental in creating fear and impacting foraging behaviour among the lower cascade. Anthropocene-led behavioural alteration in vocalization has been observed in a wide range of species, but the effect on wolf howl is unknown. In this context, we have studied the howling behaviour of the Indian wolf through playback surveys (n = 264) across the anthropogenic gradient. We found a disparity in their howl response – based on the distance to villages. In the low disturbed East-Maharashtra (EM), wolves mostly avoided responding to howling surveys (HS) if done within 1200 m of villages [response rate (RR) = 0.03 ± 0.021], but they did respond once it was done far from villages (>1200 m) (RR = 0.226 ± 0.075). In high human-density West-Maharashtra (WM), wolves showed high RR within 1200 m from the villages (RR = 0.148 ± 0.031). But the RR within 500 m from villages was less as howling near villages might lead to easy detection. The collared wolf data showed significantly high RR (0.635 ± 0.067) in their home-range core, but low RR if the core area was close to a village. Therefore, howling too close to a village is disadvantageous, although their tolerance for responding to HS has increased in the human-dominated landscape. The extent of the village may increase further with development, which will leave fewer areas for the wolf to defend territory with a long-range howl. The wolves might behaviourally adapt to a human-modified landscape by reducing their howling intensity. Adaptation to a fragmented habitat may save the wolves from extinction, but the repercussions of the fundamental behavioural alteration might adversely impact wolf behaviour and the ecological cascade. Whereas ecologists are mainly concerned with the extinction of species, this study highlights the vulnerability of fundamental behaviour of a keystone species attributed to human-induced contemporary evolution. Abstract

We consider the possibility that neutrino masses arise from the exchange of dark matter states. We examine in detail the phenomenology of fermionic dark matter in the singlet-triplet scotogenic model. We explore the case of singlet-like fermionic dark matter, taking into account all coannihilation effects relevant for determining its relic abundance, such as fermion-fermion and scalar-fermion coannihilation. Although this in principle allows for dark matter below 60 GeV, the latter is in conflict with charged lepton flavour violation (cLFV) and/or collider physics constraints. We examine the prospects for direct dark matter detection in upcoming experiments up to 10 TeV. Fermion-scalar coannihilation is needed to obtain viable fermionic dark matter in the 60-100 GeV mass range. Fermion-fermion and fermion-scalar coannihilation play complementary roles in different parameter regions above 100 GeV.

Abstract

Backgroundβ-haemoglobinopathies are the most common monogenic disorders worldwide. They present with extreme clinical heterogeneity, which makes generalized therapeutic approaches often ineffective. Currently available risk stratification approaches are either too complicated to be deployed at a primary healthcare level or are limited in their applicability across the spectrum of haemoglobinopathies. All current systems also classify patients into the three categories of mild, moderate and severe, where the moderate category is not well-characterized in terms of their expected prognosis.MethodsThe current study proposes a severity scoring scheme, utilizing five clinical parameters, viz., steady-state average pre-transfusion haemoglobin, age at presentation, transfusion interval, palpable splenomegaly and growth retardation to classify patients of various β-haemoglobinopathies into severe and non-severe categories. The study then proceeds to validate this scoring scheme on a clinically heterogeneous cohort of 224 Eastern Indian β-thalassaemia and β-haemoglobinopathy patients, and evaluate the predictive performance of the proposed scheme against a clinical standard.ResultsAll of the chosen parameters except steady-state haemoglobin display strong individual contribution to the final determination of severity, though steady-state haemoglobin conferred increased discriminatory power to the overall scheme. The proposed system achieved an accuracy of 94% against the clinical standard.ConclusionsThe proposed risk stratification strategy, being almost entirely empirically-determined, should possess wider applicability across the spectrum of β-haemoglobinopathies than currently existing systems, and should also be more suitable than said systems for studying genotype-phenotype correlations especially within the Eastern Indian β-haemoglobinopathy population.

Abstract

Plant nutrients are essential for the production of healthy crops for the world's expanding population and thus, they are a vital component of sustainable agriculture. Increased crop production depends on the type of fertilizers used to supplement essential nutrients for plants. The nutrient level fertilizers provide depends on their nature-each type of fertilizer has its advantages and disadvantages concerning crop growth and soil fertility. The management of using fertilizer must aim to ensure both an enhanced and safeguarded environment. Thus, a balanced fertilization strategy must be implemented. An experiment was conducted under field conditions to assess the effects of combinations of bio-fertilizers on agronomic and quality criteria of Brassica juncea (brown mustard), Basella alba (climbing spinach), and Amaranthus dubius (red spinach). Randomized block design with three replicas were used for the study, one set with the application of fertilizers containing Azotobacter, Rhizobium, Sesbania, Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus cereus, Bacillus megaterium, Pseudomonas fluorescens and Glomus (Mycorrhizal inoculant)-under bio-fertilizer; another with a mixture of urea, Potassium Nitrate, Super Phosphate, Potassium Sulfate, and Maple EM solution as chemical fertilizer and a control (water). Results indicated that yield and other plant criteria like chlorophyll content and gel volume were enhanced in bio-fertilizer treated plants compared to the plants grown with chemical fertilizer and control. In general, the application of bio-fertilizer significantly increased leaf length by 16-50%, the total number of leaves by 50-80%, plant size 19.15-63.15%, and gel volume by 147% (approximately) in comparison with untreated plants. Abstract

We report synthesis and crystal structure refinement of Ag2RuO4, followed by combined analysis of its physical properties through bulk experimental tools (magnetic susceptibility, electron transport, and heat capacity measurements), a microscopic experimental tool (temperature dependent neutron diffraction), and ab initio first-principles calculations. We observe a rather unique (RuO3/1O2/2)n polyoxoanion, where Ru is in a distorted trigonal bipyramidal coordination by oxygen. The RuO5 polyhedra are linked via the apical oxygen atoms to form chains extending along the crystallographic a axis. Crystal structure, magnetization, and ab initio calculations indicate that Ru is in the +6 oxidation state with a nominal valence electron configuration of 4d2. Bulk magnetization, specific-heat, and neutron-diffraction measurements provide clear indication of an antiferromagnetic transition around 75 K with moderate spin canting in the order of 30∘ with respect to the c axis. The neutron-diffraction results as well as the density functional theory based first-principles calculations of exchange interactions revealed that the strong intrachain interaction is predominantly of ferromagnetic (FM) type, and that this spin order along the chains couples with the neighboring chains through comparatively weak FM and antiferromagnetic interactions. Notably, the Landé g factor is found to be 1.8 (with an infinite chain model and even a simple Curie-Weiss approach), away from the ideal value of 2, due to the low dimensionality of the Ru/O substructure.

We show that every strategy-proof and unanimous probabilistic rule on a binary restricted domain has binary support, and is a probabilistic mixture of strategy-proof and unanimous deterministic rules. Examples of binary restricted domains include several types of single-dipped domains, the single-peaked domain where peaks are restricted to two adjacent alternatives, and the single-crossing domain with two tops. We also provide some extensions to infinitely many alternatives.

Póster presentado en la European Geosciences Union General Assembly, celebrada en Viena del 22 al 27 de abril de 2012., Meshed models in which equations are solved assuming that constant effective macroscopic properties can be defined in each cells are essential tools for predicting reservoir properties changes triggered by mineral dissolution (or precipitation) due to CO2 injection. However, the parameterization of the dissolution–precipitation problem and their feedback effects on the flow field are still challenging. The problem arises from the mismatch between the scales at which averaged parameters and parameters relationships (such as the porosity-permeability heuristic relation) are defined and the scale at which chemical reactions occur according to the pore scale fluid concentration and flow heterogeneities and modify the pore network geometry. Here, we investigate the links between the dissolution mechanisms that control the porosity changes and the related changes of the effective macroscopic value of the reactive surface area, permeability and diffusivity (or diffusional tortuosity) by means of numerical modeling at pore scale. The porous structure (pore space and mineral matrix) is spatially discretized in voxels. It is issued from either numerical generation or from processed X-ray microtomography images. Flow, reactant transport and matrix dissolution is modeled by solving iteratively the Stokes equation with no-slip boundary condition at the rock-pore interface and the advection-diffusion equation using Time Domain Random Walk (TDRW). In the examples presented here, the reaction is a first order kinetic dissolution reaction which allows a simple parameterization of the problem using the average Peclet and the Damkohler numbers characterizing the local diffusion-to-advection and the reaction-toadvection characteristic times. Depending on these parameters that are related to the reactant concentration, the reaction kinetic and the macroscopic pressure drop across the domain, effective relations between the porosity, permeability and diffusivity are obtained, showing a large range of behavior that can be directly compared to those obtained from laboratory scale experiments. The results emphasize the large influence of the initial heterogeneity. In the case of heterogeneous dissolution, i.e. when mass transfer localization occurs and heterogeneity is created by the dissolution itself (for example for high Da values) the effective parameters are scale dependent and cannot be used directly in macroscale models.

Disposed cigarette butts, a common waste material in our livelihood consisting of the cigarette filters, are toxic to aquatic life and degrade soil porosity. We report a simple process to prepare a conducting material by heat treatment of these used cigarette filters, which are composed largely of cellulose acetate. As they are non-biodegradable they therefore pose a serious threat to the environment after disposal. In keeping with the concept of recycled renewable resources, using the process of heat treatment (in Muffle furnane), we have prepared an active material from used cigarette filters. The pyrolyzed product is characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopic analysis, field emission scanning electron microscopy, ultra-violet visible spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering and zeta potential measurements. The electrical characteristics of the product have been measured to check its electrochemical behavior and results are found to be promising for further application as electronic materials.

Abstract

Political responses to the COVID-19 pandemic led to changes in city soundscapes around the globe. From March to October 2020, a consortium of 261 contributors from 35 countries brought together by the Silent Cities project built a unique soundscape recordings collection to report on local acoustic changes in urban areas. We present this collection here, along with metadata including observational descriptions of the local areas from the contributors, open-source environmental data, open-source confinement levels and calculation of acoustic descriptors. We performed a technical validation of the dataset using statistical models run on a subset of manually annotated soundscapes. Results confirmed the large-scale usability of ecoacoustic indices and automatic sound event recognition in the Silent Cities soundscape collection. We expect this dataset to be useful for research in the multidisciplinary field of environmental sciences.
