Petroleum geomechanics is becoming one of the fundamental technologies along with other B&P technologies extended in order to attain an effective exploitation of hydrocarbons by virtue of the changes induced by petroleum industry activities executed on oil and gas reservoirs. Primeval applications of geomechanics in petroleum industry were made to avoid and manage wellbore instability and sand production problems. Comprehension of the state of stress in hydrocarbon reservoirs is vital for preserving wellbore stability also for understanding the processes of hydrocarbon migration and leakage. The principal goals in this study are to constrain the full in-situ stress tensor, in one of the oil field located onshore in south of Iran. To achieve this purpose we should firstly determine the rock mechanical properties especially compressive and tensile rock strength from geophysical well logs. Unfortunately, there is no enough petrophysical information about the shear and compressive waves velocity to assess of rock strength. Among the drilled wells, dipole sonic (DSI) data is only existed in well 3 and well 6. Therefore, in this study we first applied rock mechanical properties (Vp and Vs) in WELL-3 to create a predictive model using intelligent methods and then, these parameters predicted in other wells. Magnitude and orientation of the in situ principal stresses have determined in the next stage. Our results indicate a normal faulting regime in the study area and that the state of stress is in frictional equilibrium with a friction coefficient in the range 0.6 to 1. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
