Abstract

Abstract: Gabon is one of 11 high-forest, low-deforestation (HFLD) countries in the world. It has the highest proportion of preserved forests in the Congo Basin and is the first country to create large forest carbon offset credits in the market. However, about 60% of forests in Gabon is allocated to logging concessions, causing concerns for forest degradation and the sustainability of carbon credits. Here, we use a combination of air- and space-borne remote sensing data and the-state-of-the-art gradient boosted regression trees to estimate forest structure and aboveground biomass carbon density (ACD) of trees at 100 m resolution for the year circa 2020. Mapping spatial variations of ACD across floristically diverse landscapes, we estimate average density and total living carbon storage of trees at the national and sub-national levels. The estimated ACD of trees in forestlands within the country was 142.12 ± 7.3 Mg C ha−1 with the highest values found in central Gabon (150.08 ± 5.8 Mg C ha−1) and on highlands (161.18 ± 6.7 Mg C ha−1). On average, in every region, ACD of forests found within logging concessions (149.89 ± 6.1 Mg C ha−1) was higher than unmanaged forests of unprotected areas (122.81 ± 4.4 Mg C ha−1), indicating the combined effects of logging in carbon-rich forests and increased productivity due to management. The country’s total estimated biomass carbon for trees (above and belowground) stored within the forests was 4.14 ± 0.3 Pg C with 68% found within logging concessions and 14% within protected areas. The map provides high precision and comprehensive assessment of carbon stocks of trees in Gabon’s forests, significantly improving the country’s prospects to implement climate mitigation policies and to participate in carbon markets.

Abstract

Trees structure the Earth’s most biodiverse ecosystem, tropical forests. The vast number of tree species presents a formidable challenge to understanding these forests, including their response to environmental change, as very little is known about most tropical tree species. A focus on the common species may circumvent this challenge. Here we investigate abundance patterns of common tree species using inventory data on 1,003,805 trees with trunk diameters of at least 10 cm across 1,568 locations1–6 in closed-canopy, structurally intact old-growth tropical forests in Africa, Amazonia and Southeast Asia. We estimate that 2.2%, 2.2% and 2.3% of species comprise 50% of the tropical trees in these regions, respectively. Extrapolating across all closed-canopy tropical forests, we estimate that just 1,053 species comprise half of Earth’s 800 billion tropical trees with trunk diameters of at least 10 cm. Despite differing biogeographic, climatic and anthropogenic histories7, we find notably consistent patterns of common species and species abundance distributions across the continents. This suggests that fundamental mechanisms of tree community assembly may apply to all tropical forests. Resampling analyses show that the most common species are likely to belong to a manageable list of known species, enabling targeted efforts to understand their ecology. Although they do not detract from the importance of rare species, our results open new opportunities to understand the world’s most diverse forests, including modelling their response to environmental change, by focusing on the common species that constitute the majority of their trees.

Abstract

Trees structure the Earth’s most biodiverse ecosystem, tropical forests. The vast number of tree species presents a formidable challenge to understanding these forests, including their response to environmental change, as very little is known about most tropical tree species. A focus on the common species may circumvent this challenge. Here we investigate abundance patterns of common tree species using inventory data on 1,003,805 trees with trunk diameters of at least 10 cm across 1,568 locations1,2,3,4,5,6 in closed-canopy, structurally intact old-growth tropical forests in Africa, Amazonia and Southeast Asia. We estimate that 2.2%, 2.2% and 2.3% of species comprise 50% of the tropical trees in these regions, respectively. Extrapolating across all closed-canopy tropical forests, we estimate that just 1,053 species comprise half of Earth’s 800 billion tropical trees with trunk diameters of at least 10 cm. Despite differing biogeographic, climatic and anthropogenic histories7, we find notably consistent patterns of common species and species abundance distributions across the continents. This suggests that fundamental mechanisms of tree community assembly may apply to all tropical forests. Resampling analyses show that the most common species are likely to belong to a manageable list of known species, enabling targeted efforts to understand their ecology. Although they do not detract from the importance of rare species, our results open new opportunities to understand the world’s most diverse forests, including modelling their response to environmental change, by focusing on the common species that constitute the majority of their trees.

With the rise of LiDAR-based methodologies allowing nondestructive tree volume estimations, failing to account for WD variations related to tree function and biomass investment strategies may lead to large systematic bias in AGB estimations. Here, we use a unique destructive dataset from 822 trees belonging to 51 phylogenetically dispersed tree species harvested across forest types in Central Africa to determine vertical gradients in WD from the stump to the branch tips, how these gradients relate to regeneration guilds and their implications for AGB estimations. We find that decreasing WD from the tree base to the branch tips is characteristic of shade-tolerant species, while light-demanding and pioneer species exhibit stationary or increasing vertical trends. Across all species, the WD range is narrower in tree crowns than at the tree base, reflecting more similar physiological and mechanical constraints in the canopy. Vertical gradients in WD induce significant bias (10%) in AGB estimates when using database-derived species-average WD data. However, the correlation between the vertical gradients and basal WD allows the derivation of general correction models. With the ongoing development of remote sensing products providing 3D information for entire trees and forest stands, our findings indicate promising ways to improve greenhouse gas accounting in tropical countries and advance our understanding of adaptive strategies allowing trees to grow and survive in dense rainforests. Terrestrial plants account for 83% of the living carbon on Earth 1 , of which tropical forests are estimated to account for close to half 2 , principally contained within woody plant parts. Tropical forests are therefore becoming a key element in international carbon trading schemes despite obvious difficulties in accurately estimating stocks

Abstract

International audience; Recent studies have shown the promising potential of terrestrial laser scanner (TLS) for theestimation of tree-and plot-level biovolumes. However, accurate and precise conversion of these volumes into AGB remains a big challenge. Here, we examined the implications of vertical variations of WSG on AGB estimations thanks to the destructive sampling of 821 trees from 51 species distributed across the Congo basin forests. We performed a principal component analysis (PCA)on the WSG of wood samples collected vertically along trees to characterize WSG vertical patterns. We further quantified errors associated to the use of species-level WSG extracted from Global Wood Density database (GWSG) when converting tree volume to biomass, and developed a simple correction model accounting for vertical variations. The two first PCA axes captured 78% of the variance in samples WSG and revealed the existence of increasing, constant and decreasing patterns of variation from tree stump tobranches that were well conserved within species. Vertical variation patterns could be predicted from WSG from tree stump as well as from GWSG. Using GWSG values to convert volumes to mass led to errors ranging from -40.31% to 72.77% at the tree level andca. 9% across trees. A simple model based on GWSG andtree diameter at breast height allowed drastically reducing the error (ca. 1.5% across trees). This study is an important step towards the standardization of a reliable AGB estimation method from TLS technology

Abstract

With the improvement of remote sensing techniques for forest inventory application such as terrestrial LiDAR, tree volume can now be measured directly, without resorting to allometric equations. However, wood specific gravity (WSG) remains a crucial factor for converting these precise volume measurements into unbiased biomass estimates. In addition to this WSG values obtained from samples collected at the base of the tree (WSGBase) or from global repositories such as Dryad (WSGDryad) can be substantially biased relative to the overall tree value. Our aim was to assess and mitigate error propagation at tree and stand level using a pragmatic approach that could be generalized to National Forest Inventories or other carbon assessment efforts based on measured volumetric data. In the semi-deciduous forests of Eastern Cameroon, we destructively sampled 130 trees belonging to 15 species mostly represented by large trees (up to 45 Mg). We also used stand-level dendrometric parameters from 21 1-ha plots inventoried in the same area to propagate the tree-level bias at the plot level. A new descriptor, volume average-weighted WSG (WWSG) of the tree was computed by weighting the WSG of tree compartments by their relative volume prior to summing at tree level. As WWSG cannot be assessed non-destructively, linear models were adjusted to predict field WWSG and revealed that a combination of WSGDryad, diameter at breast height (DBH) and species stem morphology (Sm) were significant predictors explaining together 72% of WWSG variation. At tree level, estimating tree aboveground biomass using WSGBase and WSGDryad yielded overestimations of 10% and 7% respectively whereas predicted WWSG only produced an underestimation of less than 1%. At stand-level, WSGBase and WSGDryad gave an average simulated bias of 9% (S.D. = ±7) and 3% (S.D. = ±7) respectively whereas predicted WWSG reduced the bias by up to 0.1% (S.D. = ±8). We also observed that the stand-level bias obtained with WSGBase and WSGDryad decreased with total plot size and plot area. The systematic bias induced by WSGBase and WSGDryad for biomass estimations using measured volumes are clearly not negligible but yet generally overlooked. A simple corrective approach such as the one proposed with our predictive WWSG model is liable to improve the precision of remote sensing-based approaches for broader scale biomass estimations.

Abstract

Forest expansion into savanna is a pervasive phenomenon in West and Central Africa, warranting comparative studies under diverse environmental conditions. We collected vegetation data from the woody and grassy components within 73 plots of 0.16 ha distributed along a successional gradient from humid savanna to forest in Central Africa. We associated spatially collocated edaphic parameters and fire frequency derived from remote sensing to investigate their combined influence on the vegetation. Soil texture was more influential in shaping savanna structure and species distribution than soil fertility, with clay-rich soils promoting higher grass productivity and fire frequency. Savanna featuring woody aboveground biomass surpassing 40 Mg ha -1 could escape the grass-fire feedback loop, by depressing grass biomass below 4 Mg ha -1 . This thicker woody layer also favoured the establishment of fire-tolerant forest pioneers, which synergically contributed to the expansion of forests. Conversely, savannas below this fire suppression threshold sustained a balance between trees and grasses through the grass-fire feedback mechanism. This hysteresis loop, particularly pronounced on clayey soils, suggests that the contrast between grassy savanna and young forests might represent alternative ecosystem states, although savannas with low woody biomass remained vulnerable to forest edge encroachment.
