14. Monitoring of three stages of paddy growth using multispectral vegetation index derived from UAV images

Abstract

Paddy cultivation in Malaysia plays a crucial role in food production, with a focus on improving crop quality and quantity. With current national self-sufficiency levels ranging between 67 and 70%, the Malaysian government intends to produce higher-quality crops and boost agricultural production. However, the prominent paddy-producing state of Kedah has witnessed a decline in yields over the years. To address this, the study explores the effectiveness of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) equipped with vegetation indices (VIs) for monitoring paddy plant health at various growth stages. Researchers acquired aerial imagery during two seasons in 2019, capturing three distinct growth stages: tillering (40 days after sowing), flowering (60 days after sowing), and ripening (100 days after sowing). These stages represent critical points in the paddy plant's life cycle. Agisoft Metashape software processed the images to extract VIs data. The study found that the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Blue Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (BNDVI) exhibited over 90% similarity. In contrast, the Normalized Difference Red Edge Index (NDRE), utilizing near-infrared and red-edge light reflections, demonstrated a unique relationship. NDRE outperformed NDVI and BNDVI with an R-squared value of 0.842, showcasing its superior accuracy, especially for dense crops like paddy plants sensitive to subtle changes in vegetation. In conclusion, this research highlights the potential of UAV-based VIs for effectively monitoring paddy plant health during different growth stages. The NDRE index, in particular, proves valuable for assessing dense crops, offering insights for precision agriculture and crop management in Malaysia.

46. Conflicts of interest and COVID

Abstract

Many of our leaders, from politicians to university administrators to business owners, face difficult trade-offs during the COVID-19 pandemic, which has created increasingly tense conflicts of interest. Across the globe, decision-makers grapple with dilemmas that weigh economic outcomes with responsibilities for public safety and health. Conflicts of interest impact decisions to close borders, implement quarantines, impose lockdowns, stagger reopenings, enforce social distancing and mandate mask-wearing. What's striking is that many of these decision-makers believe, and sometimes explicitly state, that they are not at all influenced by financial incentives. The problem with these statements is that, if our leaders and decision-makers were influenced by their conflicts of interest, they would not necessarily be aware of it. Decision-makers may think they are not biased by their conflict of interest, but that assumption is based on an inaccurate mental model of how such conflicts work. Research has repeatedly shown that conflicts of interest operate without our awareness and sometimes against our best intentions. Without external accountability, decision-makers will continue to fall prey to their biasing influence

48. Amplification of the status quo bias among physicians making medical decisions

Abstract

The status quo bias (SQB) is the tendency to prefer the current state of affairs. We investigated if experts (physicians) fall prey to the SQB when making decisions in their area of expertise and, if so, whether the SQB is reduced or amplified for experts compared to non-experts. We presented 302 physicians and 733 members of the general population with a medical scenario and two non-medical scenarios. In each scenario, participants were asked to make a decision between two options. For half of the participants, one of the options was presented as the status quo. All groups displayed a SQB but physicians displayed an amplification of the SQB but only when making decisions in the medical scenario. Experts may be more swayed by status quo options when making decisions in their area of expertise. We discuss why the SQB may be amplified for experts and the implications for practice.
