Abstract

The notions of joint and outer spectral radii are extended to the setting of Hilbert $C^*$-bimodules. A Rota-Strang type characterisation is proved for the joint spectral radius. In this general setting, an approximation result for the joint spectral radius in terms of the outer spectral radius has been established. This work leads to a new proof of the Wielandt-Friedland's formula for the spectral radius of positive maps. Following an idea of J. E. Pascoe, a positive map called the maximal part has been associated to any positive map with non-zero spectral radius, on finite dimensional $C^*$-algebras. This provides a constructive treatment of the Perron-Frobenius theorem. It is seen that the maximal part of a completely positive map has a very simple structure and it is irreducible if and only if the original map is irreducible. It is observed that algebras generated by tuples of matrices can be determined and their dimensions can be computed by realizing them as linear span of Choi-Kraus coefficients of some easily computable completely positive maps., Comment: 35 pages

39. Factors Leading to Success in Diversified Occupation: A Livelihood Analysis in India

Abstract

Purpose: Livelihood diversification is a sound alternative for higher economic growth and its success or failure is conditioned by the interplay of a multitude of factors. The study of the profile of the farmers in which they operate is important to highlight the factors leading to success in diversified livelihoods. Design/Methodology/Approach: A total of 160 households of farmers were selected randomly and were interviewed to collect primary data for the study. To measure the success of diversified occupation a success-failure scale was developed following the steps used by Singh et al., "t" statistics was used to compare the two groups. Discriminant function analysis was used to identify the factors determining success and failure in diversified occupation. Findings: The study revealed that 53% of the diversifiers were successful in their diversified activities. Around 62.50% diversifiers under the high success category were adopted non-farming nature of diversification along with farm diversification. Number of livestock holding, resource mobilisation potentiality, contact with extension personnel, distance from market, share of non-farm income, credit-seeking behaviour and dependency ratio were major characters discriminating successful diversifiers from unsuccessful diversifiers. Practical Implications: The paper would be useful for the researchers and policy-makers to assess and compare the livelihood security of different rural communities in the country. Originality/Value: The study was originally conducted by the authors. Nothing similar has been previously published or is currently under consideration for publication by another journal.

Abstract

AbstractBactericidal efficacy of gold nanoparticles conjugated with ampicillin, streptomycin and kanamycin were evaluated. Gold nanoparticles (Gnps) were conjugated with the antibiotics during the synthesis of nanoparticles utilizing the combined reducing property of antibiotics and sodium borohydride. The conjugation of nanoparticles was confirmed by dynamic light scattering (DLS) and electron microscopic (EM) studies. Such Gnps conjugated antibiotics showed greater bactericidal activity in standard agar well diffusion assay. The minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of all the three antibiotics along with their Gnps conjugated forms were determined in three bacterial strains,Escherichia coli DH5α,Micrococcus luteusandStaphylococcus aureus. Among them, streptomycin and kanamycin showed significant reduction in MIC values in their Gnps conjugated form whereas; Gnps conjugated ampicillin showed slight decrement in the MIC value compared to its free form. On the other hand, all of them showed more heat stability in their Gnps conjugated forms. Thus, our findings indicated that Gnps conjugated antibiotics are more efficient and might have significant therapeutic implications.
