To establish utility of single enzymatic marker for the diagnosis of acute pancreatitis. This is a cohort study. Tertiary care centre proven cases of acute pancreatitis ( n = 50) admitted in surgery ward between December 2011 and May 2013 were included in the study. Serum amylase and lipase were performed along with many analytes. All relevant data including serum lab values and imaging were collected. All 50 patients included in the study had raised serum lipase, 42 patients had both amylase and lipase raised, 8 patients had amylase normal but lipase raised. In smaller hospitals where limited lab and radiological facilities are available, estimation of serum lipase will be a better choice over serum amylase in diagnosis of acute pancreatitis. This article presents a robust finite control set predictive scheme for a stand-alone squirrel cage induction generator (SCIG) drive. This technique is considered an alternative to the drive system due to the inclusion of system nonlinearities and fast dynamic response. The control objective in the distributed generation environment is to fix the output voltage to follow the stand-alone requirement. The strategy establishes optimized switching instants for cost function minimization for both source and load converter control and diminished cross-coupling amid active and reactive power during transient scenarios. The scheme is designed to achieve the minimal effect caused by the parameter uncertainties. During source and load changes, this work will also address the maintenance of dc-link voltage, machine, and load variables at the set value, supported by machine and load-end converter control to achieve stand-alone load objectives. In addition, the presented scheme is also tested with random variation of speed to check the efficacy of the control configuration. The drive performance is evaluated by simulation using MATLAB/Simulink environment. Pharmaceutical contamination poses a significant threat to global health. Due to their high solubility in water, antibiotics are difficult to remove. This study produced and used sulfonated graphene oxide (SGO) to adsorb sparfloxacin from aquatic environments. UV-Visible, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), XPS, SEM, TEM, EDX, particle size, Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and acid-base titration were used to characterize synthesized SGO particles. The BET technique determined SGO's surface area (32.25 m 2 /g). The calculated pH PZC of SGO was 2.5. Sparfloxacin adsorption onto SGO was analyzed using adsorption duration, medium pH, adsorbent dosages, antibiotic concentration, cations, and solution temperature. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model better described experimental kinetic data than the pseudo-first-order and Elovich models. Equilibrium isotherm data supported the Langmuir model, revealing a peak absorption capacity of 1428.57 μmol/g at 25 °C. The kinetic and isotherm models' applicability was assessed using error analysis. A thermodynamic analysis revealed an endothermic, spontaneous adsorption process with a change in entropy (Δ S ) of 114.15 J/mol K and enthalpy (Δ H ) of 8.44 kJ/mol. Phosphine-free, air stable cobalt(II) based complexes (1a and 1b) consisting of ligands L1H2 and L2H2 (L1H2 = N , N '-((1,2-phenylenebis(azaneylylidene))bis(methaneylylidene))diphenol and L2H2 = N , N '-bis(4-diethylaminosalicylidene)-4,5-dichloro-1,2-phenylenediamine) were synthesized and utilized as catalysts in the coupling reaction of alcohols with amines into imines following an acceptorless dehydrogenative pathway. The reactions were carried out in the presence of t -BuOK base with low catalyst loading (1 mol%) in an open atmosphere. The corresponding imines were isolated in moderate to excellent yields. The methodology was screened with different substituted alcohols and amines. The proposed mechanistic pathway of this reaction was ascertained through intermediate mass and 1 H NMR analyses. Most of the previously reported 3d transition metal catalysts used in imine synthesis reactions have a phosphine ligand environment, and the reactions were performed under inert conditions. Herein we have developed a sustainable route for the synthesis of imines from the coupling reaction of alcohols with amines under aerial reaction conditions using phosphine-free air stable cobalt catalysts.

Soil erosion is the inherent and destructive threat affecting agricultural production and livelihood of million mouths. The increased frequency of floods and land use/land cover changes has made Upper Jhelum Sub-catchment susceptible to soil erosion risk. Morphometric based watershed prioritization for soil erosion risk may help in sustainable management of natural resources. Thus, this paper endeavors to prioritize watersheds of Upper Jhelum Sub-catchment in India based on morphometric parameters for soil erosion risk using geospatial techniques. Weights to the morphometric parameters were assigned through a multi-criteria decision method. The watersheds in the Sub-catchment have been categorized into low, medium, high and very high priority classes based on prioritization ranks that were determined by computing the compound value for the soil erosion risk, based on prioritization ranks obtained through compound value for the soil erosion risk. The results revealed 1E1D3 and 1E1D8 watersheds accorded very high priority. The watersheds namely IE1D2 and IEID4 were found under high priority. Medium priority for soil erosion risk was determined in IEID5 and IED7 watersheds while 1E1D1 and IE1D6 watersheds were identified for low priority. The study calls for implementing soil conservation practices in the Sub-catchment. The Sub-catchment can be made less hazardous for the soil erosion risk by implementing contour farming, building check dams, terrace farming, afforestation and limiting large scale overgrazing. The findings of this study may offer valuable insights for stakeholders for conservation of soil resource. Objectives: Approximately 30% of patients develop chronic poststernotomy pain (CPSP) following cardiac surgery with sternal retraction. Risk factors have been described but no causal determinants identified. Investigators hypothesized that opening the sternum slowly would impart less force (and thereby less nerve/tissue damage) and translate to a reduced incidence of CPSP. The main objectives were to determine whether or not slower sternal retraction would reduce the incidence of CPSP and improve health-related quality of life., Methods: Patients undergoing coronary artery bypass graft surgery were recruited to this randomized controlled trial. Patients were randomized to slow or standard retraction (ie, sternum opened over 15 minutes vs 30 seconds, respectively). Although the anesthesiologist and surgeon were aware of the randomization, the patients, assessors, and postoperative nursing staff remained blinded. Sternotomy pain and analgesics were measured in hospital. At 3, 6, and 12 months postoperatively, all patients completed the Medical Outcomes Survey Short Form and reported on CPSP and complications requiring rehospitalization. Thirty-day rehospitalizations and mortality were recorded., Results: In total, 326 patients consented to participate and 313 were randomized to slow (n = 159) versus standard retraction (n = 154). No clinically relevant differences were detected in acute pain, analgesic consumption, or the incidence of CPSP or health-related quality of life. Although the slow group had significantly more hospitalizations at 3 and 12 months postoperatively, the reasons were unrelated to retraction speed. This study investigated the conjugation of chitosan with the insulin-mimetic [ meso -tetrakis(4-sulfonatophenyl)porphyrinato]oxovanadate(IV)(4-), VO(tpps), in an aqueous medium as a function of conjugation time, VO(tpps) concentrations, and temperatures. To validate the synthesis of chitosan-VO(tpps) conjugate, UV-visible and Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometric techniques were utilized. Conjugate formation is ascribed to the electrostatic interaction between the NH 3 + units of chitosan and the SO 3 - units of VO(tpps). Chitosan enhances the stability of VO(tpps) in an aqueous medium (pH 2.5). VO(tpps) conjugation with chitosan was best explained by pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models based on kinetic and isotherm studies. The Langmuir equation determined that the maximal ability of VO(tpps) conjugated with each gram of chitosan was 39.22 μmol at a solution temperature of 45 °C. Activation energy and thermodynamic studies ( E a : 8.78 kJ/mol, Δ G : -24.52 to -27.55 kJ/mol, Δ S : 204.22 J/(mol K), and Δ H : 37.30 kJ/mol) reveal that conjugation is endothermic and physical in nature. The discharge of VO(tpps) from conjugate was analyzed in freshly prepared 0.1 mol/L phosphate buffer (pH 7.4) at 37 °C. The release of VO(tpps) from the conjugate is a two-phase process best explained by the Higuchi model, according to a kinetic analysis of the release data. Introduction: In Bangladesh, sexually transmitted infection (STI) services are available for all populations in public health facilities. However, STI services for key populations (KPs) at risk of HIV need specifically designed approaches that are predominantly administered to KPs through donor-supported service centers operated by non-government organizations (NGOs) and community-based organisations (CBOs). However, the steady decline in donor funding warrants a sustainable transition of STI services for the KPs into public health facilities. This article aimed to explore the service availability and readiness of public health facilities to provide STI services for the KPs., Methods: This qualitative study explored the service availability and readiness of public health facilities in three districts of Bangladesh by adapting the Service Availability and Readiness Assessment tool. We conducted 34 in-depth interviews,11 focus group discussions with KPs, and 29 key-informant interviews with healthcare providers, researchers, programme implementers and policy planners, in addition to series of direct observations at the public healthcare facilities. Data were analysed through thematic analysis, and categorised in relation to the WHO building blocks., Results: This study revealed that the public health system was generally not ready to serve the KPs' needs in terms of providing them with quality STI services. The 'service delivery' component, which is the most crucial facet of the public health system, was not ready to provide STI services to KPs. Findings also indicated that health workforce availability was limited in the primary and secondary healthcare layers but adequate in the tertiary layer, but needed to be oriented on providing culturally sensitised treatment. Counseling, an essential component of STI services, was neither ready nor available. However, health information systems and a few other components were partially ready, although this warrants systematic approaches to address these challenges., Conclusion: The findings show that public health facilities are yet to be fully ready to render STI services to KPs, especially in terms of service delivery and human and health resources. Therefore, it is not only integral to mobilize communities towards the uptake of public health services, but health systems need to be prepared to cater to their needs., (© 2023. Beta-glucans have immense potential to stimulate immune modulation in fish by being injected intramuscularly, supplemented with feed or immersion routes of administration. We studied how supplementing Labeo rohita's diet with reishi mushroom powder containing beta-glucan influenced immunological function. A supplemented diet containing 10% reishi mushroom powder was administered for 120 days. Afterwards, analyses were conducted on different immunological parameters such as antioxidants, respiratory burst, reactive oxygen species (ROS), alternative complement activity, and serum immunoglobulin, which resulted significant increases (p < 0.05; p < 0.01) for the reishi mushroom-fed immune primed L. rohita. Additionally, analyzing various hematological parameters such as erythrocytes and leukocytes count were assessed to elucidate the immunomodulatory effects, indicating positive effects of dietary reishi mushroom powder on overall fish health. Furthermore, the bacterial challenge-test with 1.92 × 10 4  CFU/ml intramuscular dose of Aeromonas veronii showed enhanced disease-defending system as total serum protein and lysozyme activity levels accelerated significantly (p < 0.01). Nevertheless, reishi mushroom powder contained with beta-glucan ameliorated the stress indicating parameters like acetylcholinesterase (AChE), serum-glutamic pyruvic transaminase (SGPT) and serum-glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (SGOT) enzyme activities results suggested the fish's physiology was unaffected. Information engines can convert thermal fluctuations of a bath at temperature T into work at rates of order k&#95;{B}T per relaxation time of the system. We show experimentally that such engines, when in contact with a bath that is out of equilibrium, can extract much more work. We place a heavy, micron-scale bead in a harmonic potential that ratchets up to capture favorable fluctuations. Adding a fluctuating electric field increases work extraction up to ten times, limited only by the strength of the applied field. Our results connect Maxwell's demon with energy harvesting and demonstrate that information engines in nonequilibrium baths can greatly outperform conventional engines.

Live Freshwater Mussels (FMs) have remarkable characteristics to support other species and the ecosystem. The objective of the study was to identify the planktonic composition; dye absorbance by living FMs; analyze the water quality indicators; and determine the heavy metals from FMs of different rivers in Bangladesh. In order to assess the planktonic composition, planktons were collected from the experimental ponds and then identified under the microscope. Methyl blue (MB) and methyl red (MR) dye absorbance were assessed using live FMs. After co-cultivating Silver barb ( Barbonymus gonionotus ) with FMs, water quality indicators (including pH, DO, hardness, total dissolved solids, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate) were recorded. For determining heavy metals (Cu, Cr, Cd, Pb, Zn), mussels ( Lamellidens marginalis ) samples were collected from different rivers of Bangladesh. The findings of the study showed that the planktons were significantly ( p  < 0.01) greater in the 'Fish' group, compared to the 'Mussels' and 'Mussels + Fish' groups. Also, the MB and MR dye absorption were significantly higher ( p  < 0.01) in mussels, indicating that live FMs can accumulate hazardous dyes. Furthermore, the hardness value in the 'Mussels' and 'Mussels + Fish' groups were significantly ( p  < 0.01) greater than in the 'Fish' group. In addition, the values of nitrite and nitrate in the 'Fish' group were also significantly ( p  < 0.05) greater than those in the 'Mussels + Fish' group. The heavy metals content in the mussels of the Buriganga river was significantly ( p  < 0.05) higher compared to the mussels of the Rupsha and Brahmaputra rivers. In this article, proposes an adaptive multiband hysteresis modulation and its characterization based on a robust nonlinear sliding-mode control (RNSMC) strategy of a dual two-level inverter topologies for photovoltaic (PV) system subject to robust and fast-tracking characteristics and external disturbance rejection. Using the RNSMC based novel, vector control schemes are designed and implemented to improve its robustness and against the rejection of external disturbances. The control scheme ensures the active power is stable across the whole operation of the PV systems (standalone and grid-connected). The reachability and stability analysis are obtaining the robustness of the controller. Tsypkin's method is used to realize the switching frequency characterization. The development and implementation approach of the proposed control strategy is thoroughly detailed, and its effectiveness is validated on the simulation and real-time laboratory tests. Aims: The RT-PCR is the most popular confirmatory test for SARS-CoV-2. It is sensitive, but high instrumentation cost makes it difficult for use outside routine clinical setup. This has necessitated the development of alternative methods such as CRISPR-based DETECTR method which uses lateral flow technology. Although accurate and sensitive, this method is limited by complex steps and recurrent cost of high-quality lateral flow strips. The main goal of this study was to improve the Cas12a-based SARS-CoV-2 DETECTR method and develop a portable and field-deployable system to reduce the recurring consumable cost., Methods and Results: Specific regions of N and E genes from SARS-CoV-2 virus and human RNase P (internal control) were reverse transcribed (RT) and amplified by loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP). The amplified products were detected by a Cas12a-based trans-cleavage reaction that generated a fluorescent signal which could be easily visualized by naked eye. Detection of internal control, RNase P gene was improved and optimized by redesigning RT-LAMP primers. A number of steps were reduced by combining the reagents related to the detection of Cas12a trans-cleavage reaction into a single ready-to-use mix. A portable, cost-effective battery-operated instrument, CRISPR-CUBE was developed to run the assay and visualize the outcome. The method and instrument were validated using both contrived and patient samples., Conclusions: The simplified CRISPR-based SARS-CoV-2 detection and instrument developed in this study, along with improved design for internal control detection allows for easier, more definitive viral detection requiring only reagents, consumables and the battery operable CRISPR-CUBE., Significance and Impact of Study: Significant improvement in Cas12 method, coupled with simple visualization of end point makes the method and instrument deployable at the point-of-care (POC) for SARS-CoV-2 detection, without any recurrent cost for the lateral flow strips which is used in other POC methods., (© 2022 Society for Applied Microbiology.)

A good number of researchers investigated the impact of flow modification on hydrological, ecological, and geomorphological conditions in a river. A few works also focused on hydrological modification on wetland with some parameters but as far the knowledge is concerned, linking river flow modification to wetland hydrological and morphological transformation following an integrated modeling approach is often lacking. The current study aimed to explore the degree of hydrological alteration in the river and its effect on downstream riparian wetlands by adopting advanced modeling approaches. After damming, maximally 67 to 95% hydrological alteration was recorded for maximum, minimum, and average discharges. Wavelet transformation analysis figured out a strong power spectrum after 2012 (damming year). Due to attenuation of flow, the active inundation area was reduced by 66.2%. After damming, 524.03 km 2 (48.9% of total pre-dam wetland) was completely obliterated. Hydrological strength (HS) modeling also reported areas under high HS declined by 14% after post-dam condition. Wetland hydrological security state (WSS) and HS matrix, a new approach, are used to explore wetland characteristics of inundation connectivity and hydrological security state. WSS was defined based on lateral hydrological connectivity. HS under critical and stress WWS zones deteriorated in the post-dam period. The morphological transformation was also well recognized showing an increase in area under the patch, edge, and a decrease in the area under the large core area. We have experimentally realized an information engine consisting of an optically trapped, heavy bead in water. The device raises the trap center after a favorable "up" thermal fluctuation, thereby increasing the bead's average gravitational potential energy. In the presence of measurement noise, poor feedback decisions degrade its performance; below a critical signal-to-noise ratio, the engine shows a phase transition and cannot store any gravitational energy. However, using Bayesian estimates of the bead's position to make feedback decisions can extract gravitational energy at all measurement noise strengths and has maximum performance benefit at the critical signal-to-noise ratio.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA), a chronic inflammatory disease, and its exact aetiology is not defined clearly. The free radicals produced in large amount in RA are associated with alteration in molecular structure resulting in glycation of proteins. As a result of glycation, advanced glycation end products (AGEs) produced. In this study, collagen type II suspension was injected into Wistar rats to make RA model of rats. Simultaneously, hesperidin 50 mg kg -1 body weight was orally administrated to the rats for 21 days. X-rays of the rat hind paws were analyzed and found to be significantly effective against bone loss after treatment with hesperindin. N ε -(carboxymethyl)lysine (CML) and pentosidine (PTD) concentrations in collagen-induced RA plasma were determined as 565.29 ± 30.15 and 37.23 ± 1.02 ng ml -1 , respectively, while CML and PTD in IgG were 6.63 ± 0.44 ng mg -1 IgG and 425.33 ± 37.26 ng g -1 IgG, respectively. After treatment with hesperidin, the elevated levels of CML in plasma and in IgG were significantly (p < 0.001) lowered to 450.95 ± 15.05 mg ml -1 and 5.23 ± 0.27 ng mg -1 IgG, respectively. Similarly, concentrations of PTD in plasma and IgG of rats treated with hesperidin were 28.46 ± 1.20 ng ml -1 and 359.35 ± 31.11 ng g -1 IgG, respectively. Thus, after treatment with drug, plasma CML and IgG PTD levels were restored as 93% and 16%, respectively, through free radical scavenging activity of hesperidin resulting in alleviation of RA disease by decreasing the AGEs concentrations. The National Tuberculosis Control Program (NTP) is one of the largest programs run by the state with many successes. However, underreporting is considered a real flaw of the current program. To report the characteristics and outcomes of TB patients registered in an upazila health complex in Kazipur, Sirajganj district, Bangladesh between September 2018 and February 2019 under the control of NTP was the objective of the study. This retrospective cohort study was conducted using routinely collected program data from the aforementioned site. Data retrieved from the hospital record form. Formal permission was obtained from the local authority. Consent statements and ethical aspects were waived due to the retrospective nature of the study. Analysis was performed using SPSS 20.0. A total of 207 tuberculosis cases were included with an average age of presentation of 43 years. Approximately 82.0% had pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) and the rest had extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB). PTB was more common in males, whereas EPTB was common in females (p=0.01). Of all cases, 84.0% were diagnosed by a positive sputum smear and 16.0% were diagnosed clinically with a negative sputum smear. Attendance at follow-up was 82.12%, 70.04% and 68.59% at months 2, 5 and 6 following index admission respectively. Overall, the cure rate was higher in PTB than EPTB [146 (85.9%) vs. 5 (13.5%), p<0.001). The rate of treatment completion was 25.1% (n=52) and the death count was 1.4% (n=3) [PTB-1.2 (n=2) vs. EPTB-2.7% (n=1)]. A gradual decline in reporting or completion of treatment was observed in this setting. However, a nationwide study is warranted to explore this issue in detail.

Landslides and other disastrous natural catastrophes jeopardise natural resources, assets, and people's lives. As a result, future resource management will necessitate landslide susceptibility mapping (LSM) using the best conditioning factors. In Aqabat Al-Sulbat, Asir province, Saudi Arabia, the goal of this study was to find optimal conditioning parameters dependent hybrid LSM. LSM was created using machine learning methods such as random forest (RF), logistic regression (LR), and artificial neural network (ANN). To build ensemble models, the LR was combined with RF and ANN models. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to validate the LSMs and determine which models were the best. Then, utilising random forest (RF), classification and regression tree (CART), and correlation feature selection, sensitivity analysis was carried out. Through sensitivity analysis, the most relevant conditioning factors were determined, and the best model was applied to the important parameters to build a highly robust LSM with fewer variables. The ROC curve was also used to evaluate the final model. The results show that two hybrid models (LR-ANN and LR-RF) were predicted the very high as 29.67-32.73 km 2 and high LS regions as 21.84-33.38 km 2 , with LR predicting 22.34km 2 as very high and 45.15km 2 as high LS zones. The LR-RF appeared as best model (AUC: 0.941), followed by LR-ANN (AUC: 0.915) and LR (AUC: 0.872). Sensitivity analysis, on the other hand, allows for the exclusion of aspects, hillshade, drainage density, curvature, and TWI from LSM. The LSM was then predicted using the LR-RF model based on the remaining nine conditioning factors. With fewer variables, this model has achieved greater accuracy (AUC: 0.927). This comes very close to being the best hybrid model. As a result, it is strongly advised to choose conditioning parameters with caution, as redundant parameters would result in less resilient LSM. Although the effect of digital elevation model (DEM) and its spatial resolution on flood simulation modeling has been well studied, the effect of coarse and finer resolution image and DEM data on machine learning ensemble flood susceptibility prediction has not been investigated, particularly in data sparse conditions. The present work was, therefore, to investigate the performance of the resolution effects, such as coarse (Landsat and SRTM) and high (Sentinel-2 and ALOS PALSAR) resolution data on the flood susceptible models. Another motive of this study was to construct very high precision and robust flood susceptible models using standalone and ensemble machine learning algorithms. In the present study, fifteen flood conditioning parameters were generated from both coarse and high resolution datasets. Then, the ANN-multilayer perceptron (MLP), random forest (RF), bagging (B)-MLP, B-gaussian processes (B-GP) and B-SMOreg algorithms were used to integrate the flood conditioning parameters for generating the flood susceptible models. Furthermore, the influence of flood conditioning parameters on the modelling of flood susceptibility was investigated by proposing an ROC based sensitivity analysis. The validation of flood susceptibility models is also another challenge. In the present study, we proposed an index of flood vulnerability model to validate flood susceptibility models along with conventional statistical techniques, such as the ROC curve. Results showed that the coarse resolution based flood susceptibility MLP model has appeared as the best model (area under curve: 0.94) and it has predicted 11.65 % of the area as very high flood susceptible zones (FSz), followed by RF, B-MLP, B-GP, and B-SMOreg. Similarly, the high resolution based flood susceptibility model using MLP has predicted 19.34 % of areas as very high flood susceptible zones, followed by RF (14.32 %),B-MLP (14.88 %), B-GP, and B-SMOreg. On the other hand, ROC based sensitivity analysis showed that elevation influences flood susceptibility largely for coarse and high resolution based models, followed by drainage densityand flow accumulation. In addition, the accuracy assessment using the IFV model revealed that the MLP model outperformed all other models in the case of a high resolution imageThe coarser resolution image's performance level is acceptable but quite low. So, the study recommended the use of high resolution images for developing a machine learning algorithm based flood susceptibility model. As the study has clearly identified the areas of higher flood susceptibility and the dominant influencing factors for flooding, this could be used as a good database for flood management., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Ltd. Information-driven engines that rectify thermal fluctuations are a modern realization of the Maxwell-demon thought experiment. We introduce a simple design based on a heavy colloidal particle, held by an optical trap and immersed in water. Using a carefully designed feedback loop, our experimental realization of an "information ratchet" takes advantage of favorable "up" fluctuations to lift a weight against gravity, storing potential energy without doing external work. By optimizing the ratchet design for performance via a simple theory, we find that the rate of work storage and velocity of directed motion are limited only by the physical parameters of the engine: the size of the particle, stiffness of the ratchet spring, friction produced by the motion, and temperature of the surrounding medium. Notably, because performance saturates with increasing frequency of observations, the measurement process is not a limiting factor. Highly urbanized and industrialized Asansol Durgapur industrial belt of Eastern India is characterized by severe heat island effect and high pollution level leading to human discomfort and even health problems. However, COVID-19 persuaded lockdown emergency in India led to shut-down of the industries, traffic system, and day-to-day normal work and expectedly caused changes in air quality and weather. The present work intended to examine the impact of lockdown on air quality, land surface temperature (LST), and anthropogenic heat flux (AHF) of Asansol Durgapur industrial belt. Satellite images and daily data of the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) were used for analyzing the spatial scale and numerical change of air quality from pre to amid lockdown conditions in the study region. Results exhibited that, in consequence of lockdown, LST reduced by 4.02 °C, PM 10 level decreased from 102 to 18 μg/m 3 and AHF declined from 116 to 40W/m 2 during lockdown period. Qualitative upgradation of air quality index (AQI) from poor to very poor state to moderate to satisfactory state was observed during lockdown period. To regulate air quality and climate change, many steps were taken at global and regional scales, but no fruitful outcome was received yet. Rationale: A new compact thermal ionization (TI) mass spectrometer, for the isotope ratio analysis of the elements relevant to nuclear applications, has been designed and developed. The new development offers superior performance in terms of sensitivity, precision and a compact footprint in comparison with the conventional one. The main feature of the TI mass spectrometer is the magnetic sector analyser with a sector radius of 20 cm (instead of 30/27 cm in conventional/commercial geometry). An apparent reduction in dispersion has been adequately compensated by employing variable dispersion zoom optics (VDZO)., Methods: The theoretical calculations were validated by computer simulations using SIMION 7.0, leading to the finalization of the mechanical design. Experimental evaluation was carried out using standard TI mass spectrometric methodology to determine the parameters, namely peak flatness, mass range, sensitivity, abundance sensitivity, resolution and precision., Results: The multi-collector resolution was 496, and the maximum mass was m/z 382. The sensitivity for uranium was found to be better than 1 ion for 500 atoms, and an abundance sensitivity of 50 ppm at m/z 237 was obtained. The peak flatness for the uranium peak was 3200 ppm of mass. The precision for the isotopic ratio 235 U/ 238 U was found to be 0.05% for the U200 standard., Conclusions: A new compact TI mass spectrometer with a 20 cm sector radius has been designed and developed. The advantage of larger dispersion produced by the VDZO (developed in-house) was exploited when deciding the 20 cm sector radius. Cancer cervix is diagnosed late in women due to anatomical inaccessibility of the area. Hence, a robust screening strategy will help detect carcinoma cervix early which will significantly decrease the mortality and morbidity due to this disease. We evaluated DNA methylation of three tumour suppressor genes p15, p16 and E-Cadherin on cervical smears to assess DNA methylation as a screening tool for detection of early cervical cancer in comparison to PAP smears. DNA was extracted from cervical smears of 20 cases and 30 controls. The DNA was bisulphite modified. Methylation specific PCR (MSP) was performed to assess the methylation status of the promoter region of each of the genes. MSP results were compared with PAP smears to assess the utility of DNA methylation of these genes in screening for cervical cancer. DNA methylation was detected in 55% subjects in p15 gene, 45% in p16 gene and 40% in E-Cadherin gene. This was statistically significant when compared to the controls. DNA methylation of E-Cadherin, and p15 genes as a panel has a sensitivity and specificity of 80% and 90% respectively, which is better than the sensitivity of PAP smear for detection of early cancer cervix.
