Introduction: Parkinson's Disease (PD) is the second most frequent neurodegenerative disease and dopaminergic agents are frequently used as a treatment while 'end of dose deterioration' or 'Wearing-Off (WO)' phenomenon is common with these agents. Treatment reconciliation may be helpful in this situation and there is dearth of studies especially in India. Aim: To study the WO effects in patients of PD, their pharmacotherapy and outcome. Materials and Methods: This registry-based, prospective, observational, outcomes-based study was conducted in the Department of Clinical and Experimental Pharmacology, School of Tropical Medicine, Kolkata, West Bengal, India, in collaboration with Department of Neuromedicine of Kolkata Medical College and private clinics of a Neurologist from January 2020 to December 2021. An attempt was also undertaken to make a registry of Idiopathic Parkinson's Disease (IPD) patients. WO Questionnaire 19-items (WOQ-19), Movement Disorder Society-Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (MDS-UPDRS Scale), The 39-items Parkinson's Disease Questionnaire (PDQ-39 questionnaire), The 8-items Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS scale), suspected Adverse Drug Reaction (ADR) Reporting Form of Indian Pharmacoepia commission (version 1.3), World Health Organisation-Uppsala Monitoring Centre (WHO-UMC) Scale, Naranjo causality assessment scale, Hartwig and Seigel's Severity Assessment Scale were used in the present study. The study was commenced after obtaining approval from institutional ethics committee. The data was then analysed with parametric or non parametric tests using (mean±Standard Deviation (SD), median, Fisher's-exact test, Friedman's Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) test, Wilcoxon matched pair signedrank test). Data collected and then statistically analysed by using WPS Excel version 2021 and GraphPad Prism version 9 software. Results: Total IPD patients were found to be 111 in the present study with a mean age of IPD patients as 61.85±7.20 years. Incidence of WO in the present study was found to be 40.5% among IPD patients. Most common characteristic of WO was found to be tremor in 104 (28.8%) patients followed by slowness of movement in 63 (17.5%) patients. WHO-UMC scale and Naranjo causality assesment scale both revealed 36.4% ADRs were probable category and 63.6% were possible category. MDS-UPDRS Score, PDQ-39 Score, MMAS-8 score significantly (p-value<0.05) improved during the course of treatment. The present investigation aims to reuse the heat rejected in the condenser unit of an NH3-based dairy plant to preheat the groundwater used for pasteurization of milk. A detailed thermodynamic analysis (both energetic and exergetic) of the refrigeration unit of an existing dairy plant and the boiler unit used for pasteurization is carried out in the current work. The chemical exergy of the air–water vapour mixture and the standard Indian coal is considered while analysing the evaporative condenser and the boiler unit. Cascading of the existing system with a transcritical vapour compression cycle is proposed to effectively use the heat rejected by the combined system to preheat the boiler feed water. A comparative study for different modifications, such as the inclusion of an expander and an ejector in place of the throttle valve in the top cycle of the proposed cascade system, is carried out. Additionally, the cascade systems are being analysed for two different refrigerants, i.e., CO2 and N2O. The study demonstrates that the cascade system with an expander employing N2O as the refrigerant gives the maximum benefit in terms of saving of $16.5 to $21.5 per day, 1.5 to 2% reduction in total CO2 emission, and a 2.5% reduction in total exergy destruction, as compared to the existing NH3 system. The current study investigates the equilibrium methane (CH 4) adsorption capacity and the adsorption kinetics of a locally produced coconut shell-derived activated carbon (AC CARB 6X12 60) for pressure and temperatures ranging from 0 to 55 bar and -20 to 70 °C, respectively. The adsorption isotherms and kinetics are determined using an in-house developed adsorption test rig. A maximum methane adsorption uptake of 0.140 kg/kg is obtained at -20 °C and 40 bar pressure. The adsorption equilibrium isotherm data are fitted using Toth, Dubinin-Astakhov (DA), and Modified-DA isotherm models. Afterwards, the kinetics study is done considering pseudo first order, second order, Elovich, and intra-particle diffusion models. In continuation, based on the DA isotherm model, Clausius Clapeyron relation, and Maxwell's relations, the expressions for the crucial thermodynamic parameter of adsorbed phase, i.e., isosteric heat of adsorption, specific heat capacity, enthalpy, and entropy is derived, and same is estimated using DA isotherm parameters. Additionally, the activated carbon's thermophysical properties (i.e., thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity, and specific heat) are determined using the TPS 2500 S analyzer, which works on the hot-disk principle. Using the most suitable isotherm (DA) and kinetic model (pseudo second order), heat and mass transfer analysis is carried out on novel reactor configuration with an external cooling jacket, double row of cooling pipes with external longitudinal fins for methane storage using a 3D transient model in Comsol Multiphysics. The charge characteristics are studied for gas charging pressure varying from 1 to 50 bar and cooling fluid temperature of -20 to 70 °C. Iso-concentration contours are plotted to identify the pressure-temperature combination resulting in identical storage capacity (i.e., including both gaseous and adsorbed phases). Further simulations are carried out for constant pressure charging and constant flow discharge conditions to expound upon the effects of the dormancy period, gas charging pressure, and cooling/heating fluid temperature. 14% improvement in total discharge amount is obtained with a dormancy period between charging and discharging compared to no dormancy case. Introduction: Geriatrics is a speciality that focuses on healthcare of elderly people. Geriatric population is defined as people above 60 years of age. Geriatric population constitute 8.14% of total population in India. They have diverse physiological and pathological profiles which have an impact on the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties of the administered drug. Very often they are under polypharmacy due to multisystem involvement and thereby subjected to numerous drug interactions and Adverse Drug Reactions (ADRs). There are few studies conducted in India regarding ADRs in Geriatric Patients and none in Odisha, India. Aim: Pharmacovigilance study in Geriatric patients was taken up in a tertiary care hospital to assess the spectrum, cause, severity and preventability of ADRs. Materials and Methods: This prospective, observational study was conducted in Department of Pharmacology in collaboration with Departments of Geriatric Medicine, Medicine and Skin and Venereal Disease (VD) of SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack, Odisha, India. All geriatric patients (aged =60 years) diagnosed with ADR, from September 2016 to September 2018, were included. The detailed information of type of ADR and its characteristics were filled up in Suspected ADR Reporting Form. The prevalence and profile of ADRs in geriatric patients were studied. Their causality, severity and preventability were assessed by World Health Organisation-Uppsala Monitoring Centre (WHO-UMC) System, Modified Hartwig's Severity Scale and Schumock and Thornton Preventability Scale, respectively. Results: A total of 236 geriatric ADRs were reported in two years, out of which, the most common ADRs were cutaneous 100 (42.4%), followed by metabolic 68 (28.8%) and Gastrointestional (GI) involvement 26 (11%). Out of the geriatric ADRs, 128 (54.2%) ADRs were possible, 65% were moderate in intensity and 70.3% ADRs were probably preventable. Conclusion: Cutaneous and metabolic ADRs were most common in geriatric patients in present study. A 2-D transient heat and mass transfer analysis is carried out on a longitudinal finned reactor suitable for adsorption-based green refrigeration/heat pump systems employing CO2-activated carbon pair. The study is carried out for a 1 kg adsorbent at constant charging/discharging pressure of 40 bar and 65 bar, respectively, for a fixed charging/discharging time of 300 s. Effects of various geometric parameters viz… reactor aspect ratio (AR), fin height and length, and number of fins (Nf) are studied to achieve an optimum reactor configuration based on maximum CO2 uptake. The results indicate that the addition of fins is crucial for enhancing the CO2 uptake for lower ARs. It is observed that the AR = 7.8; with 32 fins resulted in a maximum CO2 uptake of 1.25 kg/kg of adsorbent. The increment of 9–40% CO2 uptake is observed for all reactor configurations with Nf = 32. The gravimetric analysis revealed the existence of optimum reactor configurations for maximum CO2 uptakes. Based on the optimized conditions, equivalent annular finned models are analyzed for the same mass of the adsorption vessel. The results indicated that similar CO2 uptake could be obtained with lesser annular fins for lower ARs. Moreover, the current study is extended to analyze the desorption performance of optimized reactor configurations under high-pressure conditions. The results confirmed the best desorption performance for the reactor with AR = 7.8 for all external heating fluid temperatures. Pressure-driven, shear-driven and combined pressure and shear driven flow of a non-Newtonian Sisko fluid through rectangular channels is investigated. Inclusion of the aspect ratio in the formulation yields a highly nonlinear partial differential equation, which is not reported in the existing literature. Thus, neither analytical nor numerical solution to this equation is available in the open literature. In the present study, the partial differential equation, describing the flow, is solved employing the finite difference method. Explicit method is adopted, and the solution for the non-dimensional velocity and wall shear stress is obtained. An exact solution for the flow of a Sisko fluid, for a special case (for non-Newtonian index 2), through large parallel plates (aspect ratio to be zero) is obtained. Expression for the friction factor, including the effect of the aspect ratio, is given. The effects of the aspect ratio, Sisko fluid parameter, non-Newtonian index on the non-dimensional velocity distribution and shear-stress distribution are analyzed both for shear-thinning and shear-thickening fluids. The results indicate that for pressure-driven flow, the effect of the aspect ratio on the velocity is negligible when it is less than 0.1. In case of shear-driven flow and combined pressure and shear driven flow also, the characteristics of flow through large parallel plates exist in nearly 50% of the channel for the aspect ratio of 0.1 or less, which means that for up to 50% of the channel, near the core, the parallel plates assumption will generate reasonably accurate results. Detailed microstructural analysis and textural study showed significant increase in grain refinement through dynamic recrystallization and basal-texture strengthening after forging. As a result, 1.2 times improvement of strength and 2.3 times reduction in in vitro degradation rate were observed. Complete mitigation of E.Coli bacteria was noticed within 32 h of culture for both the alloys due to addition of Cu. In addition, non-toxic nature of the alloys was proven from the cell viability studies, suggesting that Mg-5Zn-0.5Zr-0.7Cu alloy has the potential to be used as internal fracture-fixation material. AbstractA transient heat and mass transfer analysis is carried out on cylindrical and spherical adsorbent reactors suitable for high-pressure CO2-based storage and green refrigeration systems. A comparative analysis is shown to arrive at the best reactor configurations subjected to different boundary conditions: free and forced convection conditions with fixed and time-dependent heat transfer coefficients, adiabatic, and constant wall temperature cases. The effects of external heating fluid temperature and flow rate on discharge characteristics and thermal-hydraulic performance of the proposed reactors are further expounded. The results showed that the cylindrical reactors throughout the various cases, outperformed the spherical reactors in terms of higher CO2 adsorption capacity and faster discharge rate. However, higher gravimetric uptakes are obtained for spherical reactors, which takes account of the reactor’s mass with much lower pumping power. Based on the detailed analysis, it is concluded that both the reactor geometries are feasible for higher-pressure CO2 storage and adsorption-based heat pump systems. To ensure higher CO2 uptakes, cylindrical reactors are recommended; however, if there is a constraint on the height and weight of the reactor, then the spherical reactors are extremely useful and highly recommended, like in the case of mobile air-conditioning systems. Experimental studies are carried out to characterize an indigenous, coconut shell based, activated carbon suitable for storage of natural gas. Properties such as BET surface area, micropore volume, average pore diameter and pore size distribution are obtained by using suitable instruments and techniques. An experimental setup is developed to estimate the equilibrium methane adsorption capacity and adsorption/desorption kinetics. The experimental isothermal uptake data is used to fit four different isotherm models. Using the constants obtained for the D–A isotherm model the variation of heat of adsorption and adsorbed phase specific heat with equilibrium pressure and temperature are obtained. Similarly Henry's Law coefficients, important at low pressure and low uptake regime are also obtained. Finally using the kinetic data and a linear driving force model, constants in the kinetic equation are obtained. Results show that the indigenous material used in this study offers reasonably high natural gas storage capacity and fast kinetics and is suitable for adsorbed natural gas (ANG) applications. A detailed performance evaluation of modified transcritical CO 2 adsorption refrigeration systems integrated with an ejector and a thermoelectric sub-cooler is carried out using simplified thermodynamic models. The simultaneous effect of subcooling and the lift produced by the ejector on system COP and the specific cooling effect (SCE) is expounded. It is observed that the proposed system yields an identical COP with that of heat and mass recovery systems with reduced design and operational complexity. However, the heat and mass recovery systems clubbed with ejector and thermoelectric sub-cooler yield the best system performance with a maximum increment of 126% in COP. The gas cooler pressure and subcooling temperature strongly affect the entrainment ratio; however, COP and SCE strongly depend on gas cooler pressure, evaporator and generator temperatures. In this state-of-the-art review, various adsorbents (i.e., Metal-Organic Framework (MOF), Activated Carbons and their composites, Carbon Molecular Sieve (CMS) and zeolites) for CO2 adsorption both at low and high-pressure applications (i.e., pre- and post-combustion CO2 capture, adsorption heat pumps employing CO2 as refrigerant) are explored. The most suitable candidate, i.e., the various grades of activated carbons (ACs), is identified based on their equilibrium uptake (isotherm data), rate of adsorption (kinetic data), isosteric heat of adsorption and cost. The study presents a comprehensive review on the basis of various models of adsorption isotherms and kinetics, their merits and demerits, and their applicability, especially in the context of CO2-adsorbent pairs. The literature shows that the activated carbons with high surface area, pore volume and better pore network results in higher equilibrium uptake and faster kinetics. A comparative analysis presented in the review work highlights that high-grade activated carbons having higher absolute uptake, also result in higher net uptake, i.e., the deciding factor for selecting the adsorbents for adsorption-based refrigeration and heat transformation applications. The comparative study clearly shows that most of the MOFs with high surface area outperform the best-activated carbons in equilibrium CO2 uptake. However, their high heat of adsorption, slower kinetics and significantly high cost comes in their way of commercialization for high/low-pressure CO2 adsorption applications. One of the notable observations of the review work is that adsorbents that perform better in low-pressure applications may not be a handsome candidate for high-pressure applications, as both mechanisms are different. Various isotherm models are compared based on the R2 value of the fitted data. The comparison clearly demonstrates that some of the models, i.e., (Langmuir, Freundlich), give better predictions at low-pressure conditions while some (Toth, D-A, Modified D-A, and D-R) give a better prediction for high-pressure adsorption. Some isotherm models take care of the surface heterogeneity, hence suitable for AC-CO2 pair. Most importantly, the compiled data for the adsorption isotherms and kinetics will be useful for further analysis and design of adsorption systems and selection of adsorbents, especially for CO2 adsorption systems suitable for green refrigeration/heat pump and carbon capture application. Abstract: We present theoretical photoionization cross sections for He 1s2s 1S and He 1s2p 1P states in a Debye plasma environment by the complex coordinate rotation method, using a finite L 2 basis set constructed from one electron Laguerre orbitals. The plasma environment is found to appreciably influence the photoionization cross sections near the ionization threshold. In this regard, the photoionization cross sections of isolated He are compared with other theoretical and experimental results. Our results are in good agreement with the previous results. A new minimum appears in the photoionization cross section curve for the metastable 1s2s 1S state. Results are given for the S- and D-wave partial photoionization for the excited 1s2p 1P state. Abstract: By developing a diagonalization scheme we observe that the dynamics of interacting electrons or holes locally coupled to dispersionless phonon mode in one-dimensional lattice can be mapped into that of paired electron or hole states (bipolaronic states), which then gives a physically appealing picture of excitation modes of the interacting electron or hole gas. As a result, the bipolaronic model of the interacting electron or hole gas, obtained from Holstein–Hubbard Hamiltonian in one-dimensional lattice, exhibits normalization of the hopping terms and leads to a reduced effective mass of the bipolaron, which essentially gives support to the bipolaronic theory of high T c superconductivity. The plasma screening effect is found to uncover a Cooper minimum in the photoionization cross sections from the ground state of the Li atom embedded in Debye plasma environment. A calculation of the photoionization cross sections is presented for alkali-metal atoms such as Li and Na in plasma environments. The computational scheme is based on the complex coordinate rotation method. A model potential formalism has been used to simplify the computational complexity of the problems of making quantitative predictions of properties and interactions of many electron systems in Debye plasmas. The plasma environment is found to appreciably influence the photoionization cross sections. In this regard the photoionization cross sections of isolated atoms are also discussed that is found to be in good agreement with the previous theoretical results. It is observed that the strong plasma screening effect remarkably alters the photoionization cross sections near the ionization threshold. The Cooper minimum in the photoionization cross sections of Na shifts toward the higher energy as the plasma screening effect increases. Groundwater chemistry and quality studies have been carried out in the Brajrajnagar coal mining area to find its suitability for human consumption, domestic use, agriculture use as well as industrial purposes. A total of fifty-four water samples were collected in Polyethelene containers from several surface and groundwater sources during the summer month of May, 2015. Physical parameters like pH, electrical conductivity (EC), total dissolved solids (TDS) and temperature were measured in situ. Major ions (Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, SO 4 2− NO 3 −, Cl−, F− and HCO 3 −) and trace elements (B, Al, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Se, Cd, Ba and Pb) were analysed in the laboratory. Hydrogeochemical facies present in the groundwater have been identified. On the basis of water chemistry, water quality index (WQI), heavy metal pollution index (HPI), and heavy metal evaluation index (HEI) were determined to ascertain the overall quality of the water for drinking purposes. Suitability of the water for the agricultural purposes was also determined using sodium percentage (Na%), sodium adsorption ratio (SAR), residual sodium carbonate (RSC), US salinity diagram, Wilcox's diagram, Kelly's ratio (KR) and permeability index (PI). The overall groundwater quality studies show that 15% samples are poor in quality for drinking purposes and 43% water samples require special treatment prior to irrigation. The present work will help the local government bodies and mining planners to understand the spatial variation of the quality of groundwater of the Brajrajnagar coal mining area. The magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flow of a third grade fluid through a rectangular channel, considering the effect of aspect ratio, has been investigated. The flow considered is steady, laminar, incompressible and hydro-dynamically fully developed. The equation, describing the flow, is a highly non-linear partial differential equation (PDE) with remote possibility of having an exact solution and even numerical solution also is very difficult to obtain. A combination of the homotopy perturbation method (HPM) and integral method (IM) has been employed to solve the non-linear PDE which is scarce in open literature. The results of the present study are compared with the results obtained by the least square method (LSM) of the MHD third grade fluid flow through a rectangular channel, without the effect of aspect ratio and are found to be in close agreement. The results indicate that the flow field is significantly affected by the aspect ratio which should be considered for practical applications. In all the available literatures of the third grade fluid flow, the aspect ratio effect is neglected and this simplifying assumption reduces the highly complicated non-linear PDE to a non-linear ordinary differential equation (ODE). The novelty of the subject work lies in the inclusion of the effects of aspect ratio in the governing equation describing the flow of a third grade fluid through a channel and solving this by a combined analytical method (HPM and IM). In the present investigation, thermodynamic analysis of four different adsorption cooling cycles; basic, internal heat recovery, mass recovery, and heat & mass recovery cycles are carried out employing CO 2 as the refrigerant. The said investigation is done for five different adsorbent materials i.e. a highly microporous activated carbon (Maxsorb III), Maxsorb III based composite, Activated carbon fibre (ACF) A-20, BPL activated carbon (AC), and Norit AC. The study stretches the analysis from subcritical to supercritical zone for evaporator temperature ranging from −5 °C to 15 °C. For subcritical cycle, generator and condenser temperatures are varied between 65 °C to 91 °C and 20 °C to 30 °C, and for transcritical cycle, generator and gas cooler exit temperatures are varied from 90 °C to 120 °C and 35 °C to 40 °C, respectively. The maximum COP and specific cooling effect (SCE) achieved by incorporating both heat and mass recovery to the basic cycle are 0.305 and 105 kJ/kg, respectively. The improvement in COP and 2nd law efficiency of the same cycle w.r.t. other cycles are in the range of 7% to 84% and 38% to 77%, respectively for subcritical cycles. Similarly, for transcritical cycles, improvements in COPs of HMRC are in range of 17% to 75%. Analysis showed better system performance for Maxsorb III and it's composite as compared to other adsorbents. An increment of 98 % and 189 % in system COP and SCE is attained by varying the aspect ratio of the reactor with fins under subcritical operations. In continuation, a reduction of 41 % in TCT is observed. The study confirms the optimum adsorption/desorption time for which the COP and SCE are maximum, especially for higher AR reactors. It is noteworthy that proper selection of reactor aspect ratio results in a better system COP, even at lower heating fluid temperatures. During the transcritical operations, an increment of 23 % in COP and 6 % in SCE is achieved for a gas cooler exit temperature of 35 °C. Moreover, the reactor configuration also affects the optimum gas cooler pressure for the transcritical cycle, like the gas cooler exit temperature. One of the crucial observations is that, for a given combination of reactor configuration, heating/cooling fluid temperatures, and operating pressures, there exists a minimum cycle time below which a cyclic steady-state condition is impossible to achieve. Natural circulation loop (NCL) based secondary fluid systems are simple, reliable, and inexpensive due to the absence of any moving components such as pumps. Water-based NCLs are widely used in applications such as solar collectors and nuclear reactors. Also, most of the studies on NCLs do not consider the three-dimensional (3D) variation of the field variables. In the subject work, 3D steady flow simulation of water based, single-phase rectangular NCL with isothermal source and sink has been carried out to study the effects of different design and operating parameters such as loop height, temperature lift, in plane and out of plane tilt angles on the rate of heat transfer, and the rate of entropy generation due to both fluid flow and heat transfer. The rate of entropy generation due to both heat transfer and fluid flow for turbulent flow regimes in a NCL is calculated for a wide range of design and operating parameters. In turbulent flow regimes, the rate of entropy generation due to fluid flow is significant although the rate of entropy generation due to heat transfer is dominant. All the above-mentioned design and operating parameters have significant effect on the rate of entropy generation and the rate of heat transfer as well. With increases in loop height and temperature lift, the rate of entropy generation increases. In cases of poisoning or drug intoxications, the offending agent(s) may not be identified during the acute and possibly critical period of the exposure. For cases of suicidal incidents, laboratory assistances in identifying the offending chemical are not promptly available. The diagnosis of "toxidromes" is, therefore, an acceptable clinical diagnostic method that has been pioneered by clinical toxicologists. The present investigation aims at developing consolidated adsorbent composites with enhanced thermophysical and transport properties at the cost of a minimum sacrifice in equilibrium CO 2 uptake. Twelve samples are synthesized using a coconut shell-derived activated carbon (CSAC) as the parent material, graphite, graphene nanoplatelets, and CuO as the additives and PVA as the binder. All the synthesized had undergone a proper characterization using N 2 adsorption/ desorption and FE-SEM to highlight the changes in the BET surface area, pore volume, pore size distribution, and pore networking compared to the parent activated carbon and surface morphology. The thermophysical (specific heat capacity) and transport properties (thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity) of all the composites of various mass fractions of the additives (10–40%) are measured using a TPS-2500 S transient hot disk method. The experimental results show that maximum thermal conductivity of 1.72 W/m K is achieved with graphite as the additive with a ratio of CSAC: graphite: PVA (Composite 4) of 50:40:10 wt%, corresponding to an increment of 606% compared to parent CSAC. The increment is comparable and better than the other consolidated adsorbent composites reported in the literature. All the constants of various isotherm models are obtained based on the experimentally obtained pressure-temperature and concentration data using the non-linear regression analysis. Based on the R2 values, the Toth model is identified as the best model for all the composites. A detailed thermodynamic analysis is further carried out, and important thermodynamic parameters, i.e., Enthalpy, Entropy, Gibbs free energy change associated with the adsorption process and the Isosteric heat of adsorption are obtained. Heat transfer in a non-Newtonian third-grade fluid, flowing under the action of pressure gradient and shear, through two parallel plates, is considered. The upper plate moves with a constant velocity. Constant wall heat fluxes are applied to the plates. Effect of viscous dissipation is included, which has a major role in heat transfer of non-Newtonian fluids. The governing equations are nonlinear and are solved semi-analytically by using the least-square method (LSM). Then, using the solution for velocity in the energy equation, the solution is obtained by a direct integration process. Further, approximate analytical solutions are obtained by the perturbation method, which validates the results generated by the LSM. The effects of the third-grade fluid parameter on the velocity and temperature and also on the physical quantity, such as Nusselt's number, are discussed. Further, viscous dissipation effects on the temperature distribution have been analyzed. Observations show that the movement of the upper plate results in a significant decrease in temperature near the upper plate. For the unit heat flux ratio, the temperature difference between the surface and fluid is more at the upper surface due to the enhanced convective heat transfer caused by the moving upper plate. Abstract: Based on the hypothesis that highly expressed genes are often characterized by strong compositional bias in terms of codon usage, there are a number of measures currently in use that quantify codon usage bias in genes, and hence provide numerical indices to predict the expression levels of genes. With the recent advent of expression measure from the score of the relative codon usage bias (RCBS), we have explicitly tested the performance of this numerical measure to predict the gene expression level and illustrate this with an analysis of Yeast genomes. In contradiction with previous other studies, we observe a weak correlations between GC content and RCBS, but a selective pressure on the codon preferences in highly expressed genes. The assertion that the expression of a given gene depends on the score of relative codon usage bias (RCBS) is supported by the data. We further observe a strong correlation between RCBS and protein length indicating natural selection in favour of shorter genes to be expressed at higher level. We also attempt a statistical analysis to assess the strength of relative codon bias in genes as a guide to their likely expression level, suggesting a decrease of the informational entropy in the highly expressed genes. Abstract: This article deals with the relationship between vocabulary (total number of distinct oligomers or “words”) and text-length (total number of oligomers or “words”) for a coding DNA sequence (CDS). For natural human languages, Heaps established a mathematical formula known as Heaps’ law, which relates vocabulary to text-length. Our analysis shows that Heaps’ law fails to model this relationship for CDSs. Here we develop a mathematical model to establish the relationship between the number of type of words (vocabulary) and the number of words sampled (text-length) for CDSs, when non-overlapping nucleotide strings with the same length are treated as words. We use tangent-hyperbolic function, which captures the saturation property of vocabulary. Based on the parameters of the model, we formulate a mathematical equation, known as “equation of word organization”, whose parameters essentially indicate that nucleotide organization of coding sequences are different from one another. We also compare the word organization of CDSs with the random word distribution and conclude that a CDS is neither similar to a natural human language nor to a random one. • Expressions for the efficiency and effectiveness of a porous fin with prescribed tip temperature are developed. • Analytical expressions for fin temperature profile and performance parameters are obtained using Galerkin's method of weighted residual. • The critical value of fin parameter S H is identified and different behaviour of the fin in the two different zone S H < S H * & S H > S H * are expounded. • The non-operating zone for a porous fin with prescribed tip temperature is identified. • Four different fin profile are explored. The present investigation aims at estimating the efficiency and effectiveness of porous fins of various profiles in a natural convection environment with both the ends imposed at certain temperatures. Unlike the other boundary conditions (insulated tip, convective tip) the maximum heat transfer rate for the present case cannot be determined considering the whole fin being at the base temperature. The maximum heat transfer rate is calculated by first finding the temperature profile of the fin corresponds to a very high value of thermal conductivity (i.e. k eff → ∞). Using the local maximum temperature values the maximum heat transfer rate is calculated. The variation of the temperature as well as the performance parameters for the longitudinal porous fin as a function of fin parameter (S H), is presented for four different profiles (rectangular, trapezoidal, parabolic concave and cubic concave). The variation of the fin efficiency with S H for different values of fin tip to base temperature ratio (θ L / θ b), depicts that for certain value of θ L / θ b the fin behaves differently in the two different zones S H < S H * and S H > S H *. The results indicate that for θ L / θ b ≥ 0.45 there exists a range of S H for which the fin efficiency is reduced and there exist local maxima and minima. This range of S H is undesirable to operate and it should be avoided for the proper design of the fin. The nonlinear governing differential equations are solved using the finite difference method followed by an iterative solver. To get approximate analytical expressions for the temperature as well as the fin efficiency and effectiveness semi- analytical solutions are also presented using Galerkin's method of weighted residual. While GDM usually resolves after delivery, it can have significant short-term and long-term adverse effects on both the mother and the fetus. Though insulin therapy is the recommended primary treatment, there exists limited evidence comparing the safety and effectiveness of different long-acting insulin analogues, including glargine U-100 and detemir insulin.The study aimed to compare the effectiveness and safety of long-acting insulin analogs, glargine U-100 and detemir insulin, in hyperglycemic pregnancy.This record-based observational study involved 64 subjects, with data collected from medical records. A novel micro-mesoporous activated carbon (SBL AC-700) is synthesized from subabul (Leucaena leucocephala) sawdust waste by direct single-stage physical activation at 700 °C for 1 h for carbon capture applications. The synthesized AC is characterized to explore various physiochemical properties like elemental composition, surface morphology and crystallinity, presence of functional groups, surface area, pore size, and pore volume. Additionally, emphasis is given to exploring the thermophysical aspects of the novel AC, the literature regarding which is scarce in the open domain. The CO 2 adsorption study is carried out for a 0–1 bar pressure for temperatures ranging from 0 to 75 °C. The analysis revealed that the AC possesses a surface area of 590 m2/g and pore volume and width of 0.27 cm3/g and 1.85 nm, corresponding to a 70% microporosity with a well-developed porous structure. At 25 °C and 1 bar, a CO 2 uptake of 40.54 cm3/g is achieved, corresponding to an increment of 6–202% compared to other commercials, chemically and physically activated carbons. Moreover, SBL AC-700 has a thermal conductivity of 0.095 W/m K, 8–131% higher than other benchmarks ACs and much lower specific heat of 0.82 kJ/kg K corresponding to lesser regeneration energy requirements. Experimental data are fitted with various isotherm models, i.e., Langmuir, Freundlich, Sips, R–P, and Toth, out of which R–P and Toth models exhibit the best fit. Abstract: The expression of functional proteins plays a crucial role in modern biotechnology. The free-living cynobacterium Synechocystis PCC 6803 is an interesting model organism to study oxygenic photosynthesis as well as other metabolic processes. Here we analyze a gene expression profiling methodology, RCBS (the scores of relative codon usage bias) to elucidate expression patterns of genes in the Synechocystis genome. To assess the predictive performance of the methodology, we propose a simple algorithm to calculate the threshold score to identify the highly expressed genes in a genome. Analysis of differential expression of the genes of this genome reveals that most of the genes in photosynthesis and respiration belong to the highly expressed category. The other genes with the higher predicted expression level include ribosomal proteins, translation processing factors and many hypothetical proteins. Only 9.5% genes are identified as highly expressed genes and we observe that highly expressed genes in Synechocystis genome often have strong compositional bias in terms of codon usage. An important application concerns the automatic detection of a set of impact codons and genes that are highly expressed tend to use this narrow set of preferred codons and display high codon bias .We further observe a strong correlation between RCBS and protein length indicating natural selection in favor of shorter genes to be expressed at higher level. The better correlations of RCBS with 2D electrophoresis and microarray data for heat shock proteins compared to the expression measure based on codon usage difference, E(g) and codon adaptive index, CAI indicate that the genomic expression profile available in our method can be applied in a meaningful way to study the mRNA expression patterns, which are by themselves necessary for the quantitative description of the biological states. Abstract: Transfer-RNA genes in archaea often have introns intervening between exon sequences. The structural motif at the boundary between exon and intron is the bulge–helix–bulge. Computational investigations of these boundary structures in Haloarcula marismortui lead us to propose that tRNA-isoleucine and tRNA-tryptophan genes are co-located. Precise in silico identification of the splice-sites on the bulges at the exon–intron boundaries lead us to infer that a single intron-containing composite tRNA-gene can give rise to more than one gene product.
