Radiation retinopathy is a chronic, progressive, and occlusive vasculopathy that can manifest anytime between 1 month to 15 years after starting radiation therapy. The aim of treatment in most of these cases is to prevent further vision loss. Treatment options such as laser photocoagulation, anti-vascular endothelial growth factor and intraviral steroids have been described. However, despite several advances in diagnostic and therapeutic modalities, a significant proportion of eyes with radiation retinopathy eventually go blind. This review summarises some of the clinical features, investigative modalities, and recent therapeutic strategies used in the management of radiation retinopathy.Keywords: radiation retinopathy, radiation maculopathy, anti-VEGFs, laser photocoagulation, ocular tumors

Purpose: To describe a potential biomarker termed as inner choroidal fibrosis in cases of chronic central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR) presenting to a tertiary referral center., Design: Observational case series., Methods: Five eyes of 4 patients with CSCR were noted to have a gray-white subretinal lesion in the macula, which was analyzed with multimodal imaging., Results: The lesions were hypofluorescent on autofluorescence, fundus fluorescein angiography, and indocyanine angiography. In all cases, a characteristic heterogeneous, hyperreflective lesion in the inner choroid was seen on optical coherence tomography (OCT), corresponding to the white subretinal lesions. The lesion was distinct from the adjacent choroid, with greater reflectivity and greater thickness than the adjacent compressed choroidal vasculature. The dilated outer pachyvessels were pushed outward or sideways in all cases. On OCT-angiography, the corresponding lesion showed flow void areas. We have termed this zone of inner choroidal hyperreflectivity "inner choroidal fibrosis." Upon analyzing the clinical course, 3 of the patients had a history of choroidal neovascularization. The contralateral eye in 2 of these 3 patients also developed choroidal neovascularization. Three of the eyes had an overlying focal choroidal excavation., Conclusions: We report a potential biomarker of CSCR termed "inner choroidal fibrosis" in 4 cases of chronic CSCR. It can best be identified on enhanced depth or swept source OCT as a region of heterogeneous hyperreflectivity in the inner choroid. Background: Rehabilitation with dental implants has become the most widely accepted treatment protocol for rehabilitation of lost natural teeth. Direct sinus lift is one of the most predictable procedures for augmenting the deficient posterior maxillary ridges., Methods: The study was designed in patients with insufficient bone for implants in the maxillary posterior ridges. The test group received platelet-rich fibrin alone as filler, and the control group received a bone allograft. The residual bone height (RBH), implant mobility, and soft tissue characteristics between and within the groups were compared and analyzed., Results: Both the groups had considerable gain in RBH, and the intragroup analysis revealed clinical gain in bone height in both the groups, with the test group exhibiting statistically significant gain which kept on improving from 6 months with z= -3.477 and a p value of 0.001 to 9 months with z=-3.531 and a p value of 0.027., Conclusion: The results suggest that the use of platelet-rich fibrin alone improves the bone regeneration, thereby achieving predictable and stable augmentation of the sinus floor required for the success of implant therapy., Competing Interests: The authors have none to declare., (© 2022 Director General, Armed Forces Medical Services. Study Objectives: The study aimed to compare the analgesic effect of USG-guided PENG (Peri capsular nerve group) block with Intravenous Nalbuphine hydrochloride (IVN) in patients with hip fracture coming to the emergency department (ED). The purpose was also to monitor the adverse effects and rescue analgesic requirements in both treatment modalities., Methods: The study was an open-label randomised controlled trial (RCT) comparing PENG block versus IVN in treating patients with femoral head and neck fractures, as well as pubic rami fracture of the hip (HF). The participants in the PENG group received a USG-guided PENG block by injection of 25 ml of 0.25% bupivacaine, whereas the IVN group received 0.15 mg/kg of nalbuphine. An emergency physician with expertise in ultrasound-guided nerve blocks performed the PENG blocks. The primary outcome was to measure the improvement of the NRS (Numerical rating scale) score at 30 min in both static position (Patient-chosen position for the best comfort) and dynamic position (15-degree passive affected lower limb elevation). Secondary outcomes were to measure static and dynamic NRS pain scores at 2 h, 4 h, and 6 h after intervention in both groups. The requirement for rescue analgesia, adverse events and any block-related complications were also recorded., Results: A total of 60 patients with HF were included in the final analysis. The static and dynamic NRS score was significantly lower in the PENG group compared to the IVN group at 30 min, 2 h, 4 h, and 6 h post-intervention. In the PENG group, the static NRS score was improved by 5.73 ± 1.17, while In the IVN group, the static NRS score was just improved by 2.13 ± 0.97 at 30 min. In the same duration, the Dynamic NRS score in the PENG group was improved by 6.13 ± 1.38, while In the IVN group, it improved just by 2.43 ± 1.28. Rescue analgesia was required in 50.0% of patients in the IVN group but none in the PENG group. Introduction: ORIF is the gold standard for the management of mandibular fractures. The chances of postoperative complications are due to infection, damage of the inferior alveolar nerve canal, or tooth root during the fixation of the fracture fragments. Fixation hardware placed in the vicinity of the vital structures may encroach on the anatomic structures, leading to postoperative complications., Aim: The aim of this study is to evaluate the injury to the anatomic structures in the proximity of the fracture line due to the fixation device., Material and Methods: This retrospective study was conducted in a tertiary care teaching hospital from July 2021 to June 2023. The cases of maxillofacial trauma reported and referred from peripheral centers were considered duly, applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Patients having mandibular fractures from one mandibular foramen to another with or without associated other facial fractures were treated by ORIF under general anesthesia. The patient was followed up at 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, and 6 months. The cases of postoperative complications were further investigated by CBCT., Result: There were 67 patients (56 males and 11 females) with 86 fracture lines in the age group of 18-55 years with an average age of 35.2 years. Postoperatively 7 patients presented with unilateral paresthesia of the lower lip and chin region. CBCT revealed that the mean distance of the screw from the inferior alveolar nerve canal was 3.02 mm. None of these cases had injury to the nerve canal or roots of teeth. All the patients recovered from paresthesia within 6 months., Discussion: Complications like injury to the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) with sensory disturbances to the lower lip and chin, as well as tooth/tooth root fractures, may occur due to mandibular fracture, surgical manipulation, and fixation devices. The anatomic structures in the vicinity of the fracture line can be damaged during the fixation of the fracture fragments by the bone plates and screws. In the present study, it was found that 7 out of 67 patients presented with unilateral paresthesia of the lower lip and chin. CBCT analysis showed a considerable distance of 3.02 mm from the inferior alveolar nerve canal to the screws. Introduction: Ludwig's angina is a serious life-threatening infective condition of maxillofacial region due to odontogenic origin which is clinically diagnosed by its clinical signs and symptoms. Airway management and early surgical decompression is the main stay of management. The mortality rates in Ludwig's angina remains multivariate. There is a paucity in literature regarding the mortality rates of this disease., Aim and Objectives: Aim of this retrospective study is to describes the characteristics, probable cause of death and mortality rates of patients with co-morbidities presenting to the emergency department (ED) who were subsequently admitted with a primary diagnosis of Ludwig's angina., Materials and Method: Study was conducted in the department of maxillofacial surgery in a tertiary care teaching hospital from Jan 2011 to Dec 2022. Data of 17 patients who were clinically diagnosed as Ludwig's angina were included in the study. The comorbidity, source of odontongenic cause, mode of intubation and the outcome of the disease were evaluated., Result: Comparison of categorical variables was done using Fishers exact test. A p-value of <0.7 was considered statistically significant. Osteopetrosis (OP) is a heterogeneous group of rare, heredity bone disorders with variable clinical features involving the bones of the body. OP is characterized by increased bone density, which is caused by aberrant osteoclast-mediated bone resorption. This syndromic disorder comes with a series of problems and, unless recognized and treated early, can lead to a multitude of further grave complications. Introduction: Mandibular fractures are common in maxillofacial trauma, often requiring surgical intervention for optimal recovery. One critical concern during such procedures is the potential for nerve damage, specifically involving the mandibular canal. This study aims to investigate whether the presence of postoperative mandibular canal discontinuity is associated with an increased risk of nerve damage., Methodology: A retrospective analysis was conducted on a cohort of 72 postoperative mandibular fracture patients. In total, 58 patients had entire mandibular canal continuity, while 14 showed discontinuity. Clinical records and follow-up data were examined to assess the occurrence of nerve injury. Statistical analysis was performed to determine the significance of any correlation., Results: Of the 14 patients with mandibular canal discontinuity, 9 (64.28%) exhibited paresthesia. In patients where mandibular canal continuity was maintained, 5 (8.62%) patients reported paresthesia. These results suggest a higher incidence of paresthesia in patients with mandibular canal discontinuity, albeit with a small sample size. Notably, only 3 patients in the discontinuity group did not show any sign of improvement, while the remaining patients in both groups demonstrated complete recovery in 6 months of follow-up period., Discussion: The findings suggest a potential link between mandibular canal discontinuity and an increased risk of paresthesia in postoperative mandibular fracture patients. It is hypothesized that discontinuity may lead to nerve compression, irritation, or direct damage during healing. The observed complete recovery in most patients, including those with paresthesia, highlights the potential for the nervous system to repair itself over a period of time. However, further studies with larger sample sizes are warranted to establish a more definitive correlation., Conclusion: This study provides preliminary evidence that mandibular canal discontinuity may contribute to a higher incidence of paresthesia in postoperative mandibular fracture patients. Clinicians should be cautious when addressing mandibular fractures to minimize the risk of nerve damage, particularly in cases involving canal discontinuity. Phenolic compounds are the major contaminants identified from various industrial effluents, which pose an extreme threat to the environment. Therefore, investigating an effective technique to remove these toxic phenolic compounds from the contaminated environment is very essential. In the present investigation, batch tests were performed to assess the biodegradation of phenol using an indigenous Rhodococcus pyridinivorans strain PDB9T NS-1 encapsulated in a calcium alginate bead system. In order to improve the mechanical stability, silica was added to the cell-embedded Ca-alginate beads. The impact of experimental conditions such as contact time, pH, and initial phenol doses was investigated. The biodegradation of phenol was examined over a wide range of phenol, and the results showed that more than 99.6% degradation was achieved at an initial phenol dose of 1000 mg/L in 70 h at 30 °C. Among the various sorption isotherm tested, the Freundlich isotherm was the best fitted to the experimental data. This behavior indicated a multilayer biosorption process and was controlled by heterogeneous surface energy. Based on an intra-particle diffusion model, internal mass transfer or pore diffusion predominated over exterior mass transfer in controlling the entire phenol biosorption process. The biosorption of phenol onto the cell encapsulated in the Ca-alginate bead follows pseudo-first-order kinetics with a superior phenol biosorption capacity of 155 mg/g of Ca-alginate. Further stability study revealed that the bead could be recycled successfully without any substantial decline in phenol degradation efficiency, indicating that the immobilized microbe possesses exceptional operating stability., (© 2023. Many industrial effluents release cyanide, a well-known hazardous and bio-recalcitrant pollutant, and thus, the treatment of cyanide wastewater is a major challenge. In the current study, a CuFe 2 O 4 -SnO 2 -rGO nanocomposite was synthesized to remove cyanide from an aqueous system. The structural and morphological characterizations of the nanomaterials were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectra (EDX) analysis. The results revealed that almost 97.7% cyanide removal occurred using the nanocomposite at an initial concentration of 100 mg L -1 within 1 h. The experimental data were fitted to various adsorption models, among which the Langmuir model fitted the data very well, confirming the monolayer adsorption process. The kinetic investigation revealed that the cyanide adsorption process followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model, indicating a chemisorption process with a high cyanide adsorption capacity of 114 mg g -1 . The result of the intraparticulate diffusion model fitting revealed a decreasing slope value ( K ) from stage 1 to stage 2, indicating that external mass transfer is the predominating step. Background: The surgical approach for cranial reconstruction is influenced by the presence of pre-existing scar tissue. Scars that lie within the vicinity of cranial defect require modification., Purpose: The present study was conducted to analyse co-relation between craniectomy scar and cranioplasty incision., Materials and Methods: A retrospective evaluation of 70 patients who were divided into three groups based on location of cranioplasty incision line was done. In group I, incision was located parallel and outside the scar; group II, incision was located over the scar; and group III, mixed and criss-cross incision was present. The primary outcome variable of interest was to analyse co-relation between craniectomy and cranioplasty incisions., Results: There were 45 cases of group I, 15 cases of group II and 10 cases of group III. Thirty-three patients had defect on left side, 26 had on right side, and 10 had bifrontal defect. Purpose: To analyse the gender-specific differences in central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR) based on a new multimodal imaging classification system., Method: This was a retrospective, multicentric, longitudinal, observational study in patients with a diagnosis of unilateral or bilateral CSCR. Visual acuity outcomes and differences based on 'Simple' and 'Complex' CSCR were analysed. The occurrence of choroidal neovascularization (CNVM) and number of recurrences were also compared. Regression analysis was used to evaluate baseline predictors of final visual acuity., Results: The study included 109 eyes of 58 patients (55 eyes of 28 female patients and 54 eyes of 30 male patients). Simple CSCR was seen in 8 (14.8%) eyes and 21 (38.2%) eyes in male and female groups respectively, while complex CSCR was seen in 46 (85.2%) eyes and 34 (61.8%) eyes in male and female groups respectively (p = 0.005). Recurrence was more commonly seen in males (34 eyes) than in females (23 eyes) (p = 0.03). Males (96.7%) were also significantly more likely to have a bilateral presentation (78.6% in females) (p = 0.03). Conversely, CNVM was more commonly seen in female eyes (8 eyes) than male eyes (4 eyes) (p = 0.23). On multivariable regression analysis, factors affecting reduced need for treatment were history of steroid use, good visual acuity at baseline, and simple CSCR. Factors affecting good final visual acuity were history of steroid use, good visual acuity at baseline, and younger age., Conclusion: Males tended to have complex CSCR and recurrence compared to the female sub-group, while females exhibited CNVM more commonly than males., (© 2023. Methods: This pilot clinical trial included 10 eyes of 10 patients with idiopathic MH, where PPV along with ILMP was done. Fibrin glue was used as a tamponade, and no postoperative positioning was given to any patient. The primary outcome measure was successful anatomical closure of the MH. The secondary outcome measures were postoperative improvement in best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and any complications of the procedure., Results: The median age of patients was 62.5 years. Eight eyes were pseudophakic and two were phakic. The mean basal diameter of the MH was 1193 microns. The mean minimal linear diameter was 652 microns. Successful anatomic closure of MH was achieved in eight cases. The median BCVA improved from a Snellen equivalent of 20/100 preoperatively to 20/60 at 1 month postoperatively. The median follow-up period was 4 months., Conclusion: The findings of this study suggest that the use of fibrin glue can be useful in patients where postoperative positioning is difficult.

The presence of fluoride and nitrate is a serious groundwater quality issue in India impacting human health. In the present study, 14 different hydrochemical parameters for 76 groundwater samples collected from the Jajpur district of Odisha, India, were evaluated. Entropy-weighted water quality index (EWQI), fixed-weight groundwater quality index (GWQI), principal component analysis (PCA), and rotated factor loading-based water quality index (PCWQI) were employed to assess groundwater quality. About 65.79 ± 4.68%, 33.55 ± 3.95%, and 0.66 ± 0.76% of the samples were rated as "excellent," "good," or "medium" quality, respectively, across the four different water quality indices, with a nominal rating discrepancy of 13.15%. Though 86% of samples consistently received excellent or good ratings across all WQI frameworks, concentrations of F - and NO 3 - in 36.8% and 11.84% of the samples exceeded the WHO permissible limit. In health risk assessment, about 38.15% of samples surpassed the F - hazard quotient (HQ > 1) posing non-carcinogenic health risks for children. The non-carcinogenic health risks due to NO 3 - were evident in 55.26% and 11.84% of samples for children and adults, respectively. The higher concentration of NO 3 - in some of the water samples, together with its positive correlation with HCO 3 - , may worsen groundwater pollution. The moderate correlation between Ca 2+ and HCO 3 - (r = 0.410) and the insignificant correlation between Mg 2+ and HCO 3 - (r = 0.234) suggests calcite dissolution is far more common than dolomite., (© 2024. Multifunctional nanocomposites have shown great interest in clean energy systems and environmental applications in recent years. Herein, we first reported the synthesis of Dy 2 NiMnO 6 (DNMO)/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanocomposites utilizing a hybrid approach involving sol-gel and solvothermal processes. Subsequently, we investigated these nanocomposites for their applications in catalysis, electromagnetic interference shielding, and supercapacitors. A morphological study suggests spherical-shaped DNMO nanoparticles of an average size of 382 nm that are uniformly distributed throughout the surface without any agglomeration. The as-prepared nanocomposites were used as catalysts to investigate the catalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol in the presence of NaBH 4 . DNMO/rGO nanocomposites demonstrate superior catalytic activity when compared with bare DNMO, with the rate of reduction being influenced by the composition of the DNMO/rGO nanocomposites. In addition, novel multifunctional DNMO/rGO was incorporated into polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) to develop a flexible nanocomposite for electromagnetic shielding applications and exhibited a shielding effectiveness of 6 dB with 75% attenuation at a frequency of 8.5 GHz compared to bare PVDF and PVDF-DNMO nanocomposite. Furthermore, the electrochemical performance of DNMO/rGO nanocomposites was investigated as an electrode material for supercapacitors, exhibiting the highest specific capacitance of 260 F/g at 1 A/g. Purpose: To analyse baseline imaging characteristics and factors affecting poor visual acuity in diabetic papillopathy., Methods: This was a retrospective, observational study conducted at a tertiary eye care centre in eyes with a diagnosis of diabetic papillopathy. Demographic data including age, gender, duration of diabetes, type of diabetes, HbA1c values and other systemic co-morbidities were recorded. Baseline best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), and various imaging characteristics were noted., Results: 37 eyes of 22 patients with diagnosis of diabetic papillopathy were included [mean age of 46.6 ± 13.5 years, five (22.7%) females and 17 (77.3%) males]. Bilateral involvement was seen in 15 (68.2%) patients. The mean baseline BCVA was 0.51 ± 0.49 logMAR (Snellen equivalent 20/60). Two eyes (5.4%) had features of concurrent mild NPDR, 9 eyes (24.3%) had moderate NPDR, 10 eyes (27.03%) had severe NPDR while 16 (43.2%) other had PDR. All eyes had optic disc edema while 4 had disc pallor at presentation. Telangiectatic vessels/ neovascularisation of disc was present in 17 eyes (45.9%) detected either clinically or on optical coherence tomography (OCT) angiography. 11 (29.7%) eyes had a peripapillary cuff of subretinal fluid accompanying the disc edema. Sixteen eyes (43.2%) had centre involving macular edema seen on OCT. In eyes with a macular edema, the mean central macular thickness was 407.4 ± 71.42 microns at baseline. On assessing the baseline factors that contribute to the final visual acuity, presenting visual acuity was the only variable found to be statistically significant., Conclusion: Although described to have good visual outcome, eyes presenting with poor visual acuity tend to have worse vision on follow up. Introduction: Peripheral giant cell granuloma (PGCG) is a type of reactive hyperplastic lesion in the oral cavity that develops due to local irritation or chronic trauma, originating from the periosteum or periodontal membrane. It primarily affects the alveolar mucosa of the posterior mandibular region and has a peak incidence in the age range of the fourth to sixth decades of life, with a 2:1 female predilection. The aim of the study was to analyse the histopathological pattern of peripheral giant cell granuloma., Materials and Methods: This retrospective study was conducted at a tertiary care teaching hospital from 2018 to 2023 after obtaining the required institutional ethical board approval (SMC/UECM/2023/627/296). All the cases of maxillofacial lesions referred/reported to and which conformed to the set inclusion and exclusion criteria were included. Data were analysed by calculating the percentage of the variables. IBM SPSS version 20 software was used to analyse the descriptive data., Results: Out of 12 patients, four were males and eight were females. The age ranged from 20 to 60 years with an average age of 40 years. One of the cancers that affect men, prostate cancer considerably raises mortality rates for males around the world. Patients with prostate cancer can have a localized or advanced form of the illness. Digital rectal examinations, prostate-specific antigen analyses, and prostate biopsies are all used to identify prostate cancer. The onset, development, and spread of cancer are all correlated with mutations in specific genes. Radical prostatectomy, ablative radiation, and active surveillance are all forms of treatment for localized prostate cancer. Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT), radiation, and chemotherapy are given to men who have metastatic prostate cancer or have experienced a relapse. When compared to traditional cancer chemotherapeutic methods, the liposome-based drug delivery technology offers less toxic, biodegradable, and biocompatible nanomedicine. Liposomes offer great advantages for use in nanomedicines by improving the sensitivity, specificity, and persistence of these anti-malignant cell agents in the body. Liposomal formulations are undergoing clinical trials of variety of cancers including prostate cancer.
