Abstract

Human postmortem brain samples from temporal lobe of 23 alcoholics and 19 controls (13 with cancer and six without cancer) were used for determination of low Km (micromolar) and high Km (millimolar) aldehyde dehydrogenase activity. Despite histories of severe alcoholism leading to death through multiple complications, the mean values for either low or high Km activity did not differ significantly from that of controls similarly studied. Abstract

Ballism, also called ballismus, is a neurological symptom of swinging, jerking, or flinging. It is usually observed only on one side; bilateral ballism is quite rare. The authors report the case of a 35-year-old man who had been previously diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. The patient made continuous flinging movements, which were more pronounced when the patient was intending to move. The movements disappeared during sleep. The patient died almost six years later and the brain became available for pathologic examination. Lesions were seen in several areas, including the thalamus, hypothalamus, and subthalamic nuclei. In addition, lesions were observed in both sides of the basal ganglia, which consist of the caudate, putamen, and globus pallidus. The observations support the prevailing belief that ballism results from lesions in the basal ganglia and the subthalamic nuclei. (Consumer Summary produced by Reliance Medical Information, Inc.)

• Cerebral mucormycosis was found at autopsy in a 27-year-old male narcotic addict with rapidly progressive focal neurologic signs. There was no evidence of rhinocerebral involvement or systemic illness, and a nuclide brain scan suggested brain abscess.

45. Isolated Trigeminal Neuropathy: An Unusual Complication of Carcinoma of the Lung

Abstract

The occurrence of isolated metastasis to the trigeminal nerve or ganglion from a distant, solid tumor is rare. This communication describes a patient with carcinoma of the lung; an isolated trigeminal neuropathy developed and at autopsy proved to be secondary to metastasis to the trigeminal ganglion. The appearance of a trigeminal neuropathy in a patient with an active solid tumor elsewhere in the body is most likely due to metastasis.(JAMA 237:2522-2523, 1977)

Abstract

Background: The aim of this study was to investigate whether a candidate gene, Sciellin (SCEL), mapping to the chromosome 13q21-q31 is mutated in esophageal cancer., Materials and Methods: The coding region and intron-exon junctions of SCEL were sequenced in 13 esophageal squamous cell cancers and matching normal esophageal samples to detect mutations., Results: Three single nucleotide polymorphisms were detected in SCEL of which two were silent mutations (L640L and H654H) and one missense mutation (R366K)., Conclusion: Single nucleotide polymorphisms were detected in both matching tumor and normal esophageal tissues but no disease-associated mutations suggesting that SCEL is not a major factor in esophageal squamous cell carcinogenesis.
