Triple-class-refractory multiple myeloma (MM) describes MM refractory to proteasome inhibitors, immunomodulatory agents, and anti-CD38 monoclonal antibodies. In the Phase IIb STORM study (NCT02336815), oral selinexor plus low-dose dexamethasone (Sel-dex) demonstrated a 26.2% overall response rate in triple-class-refractory MM. Here, we compare overall survival (OS) of 122 patients with triple-class-refractory MM who received Sel-dex in STORM Part 2 with that of 64 similar patients treated with other available therapies in a Flatiron Health Analytic Database (FHAD) cohort. OS from the date that the patients MM became triple-class-refractory was longer in STORM versus FHAD, with an unadjusted hazard ratio (HR) of 0.43 (P =  .0002; adjusted HR 0.35 [P  =  .011]). In a subset analysis of highly resistant patients receiving further therapies after their MM first became at least triple-class-refractory (i.e., who received Sel-dex in STORM, n = 64, and non-Sel-dex in FHAD, n = 36), the OS was significantly longer in STORM with an unadjusted HR of 0.52 (P = .0331; adjusted HR 0.33 [P = .041]). Within the limits of this analysis, the OS of patients with at least triple-class-refractory MM was significantly better with Sel-dex versus available therapies, suggesting that Sel-dex may be associated with a meaningful OS benefit in these patients.

Geological investigations carried out on the Dahra Massif have revealed sedimentary changes and bioevents characterizing the post-gypsum detrital sediments (from Messinian to Piacenzian), which are followed by the Trubi equivalent Pliocene marls or white marly limestones. Structured into two superimposed steps, the late Messinian deposits yielded two successive ostracod assemblages. They indicate a brackish environment for the lower and a fairly open shallow brackish environment for the second. Based on their ostracod content, assemblage 1 (Cyprideis, Loxoconcha muelleri) corresponds to the Lago Mare biofacies 1 of the Apennine foredeep, which is correlated with the Lago Mare 1 episode dated between 5.64 and 5.60 Ma. Assemblage 2 (Loxocorniculina djafarovi) is referred to the Lago Mare biofacies 2 described in the same region. It is correlated with the Lago Mare 3 episode, dated between 5.46 and 5.33 Ma. Moreover, the stratigraphic succession is marked by a major discontinuity indicated by a hardground, separating step 1 from step 2 and corresponding to the ostracod assemblages 1 and 2, respectively. This discontinuity is considered here to be equivalent to the Messinian Erosional Surface, already evidenced in the region and widely known around the Mediterranean Basin. These late Messinian deposits and their ostracod assemblage 2, notably the detrital sedimentation with Ceratolithus acutus, Globorotalia margaritae, Reticulofenestra cisnerosii document a marine incursion into the Lower Chelif Basin, corresponding to the latest Messinian marine reflooding of the Mediterranean Basin, that happened before the earliest Zanclean R. cisnerosii occurrence. Finally, the bioevents evidenced in the Dahra Massif, reinforce the evidence of the late Messinian Lago Mare 3 episode, and support the ante-Zanclean age of the marine reflooding of the Mediterranean. The overlying deposits are marked by coral constructions (cf. Cladocora cf. caespitosa, Dendrophyllia sp) never described before and covering the entire early Zanclean, testifying the existence, at that time, of warm enough conditions, which may correspond to the marine isotopic stage TG5.

This article explores a specific physical rehabilitation in French schooling after the Second World War. To this end, it analyses how, in concepts and as the result of data-derived information, pupils considered as "weak" physically speaking were taken care of by the school and especially how the actors of the physical education (PE) system got together to make a cultural offer in line with what were considered to be their needs and aptitudes. Indeed, after a meticulous summary of some of their body measurements and physical displays, the pupils are thus classified into groups where they were taught a kind of PE, considered as the most appropriate to their needs. The paper also focuses on how, during a particular social and political context, the school developed corrective gymnastics as an original pedagogy for disabled pupils of the third group who were to be taught in a new location, the physical rehabilitation centres.

Purpose Selinexor, a first-in-class, oral, selective exportin 1 (XPO1) inhibitor, induces apoptosis in cancer cells through nuclear retention of tumor suppressor proteins and the glucocorticoid receptor, along with inhibition of translation of oncoprotein mRNAs. We studied selinexor in combination with low-dose dexamethasone in patients with multiple myeloma refractory to the most active available agents. Patients and Methods This phase II trial evaluated selinexor 80 mg and dexamethasone 20 mg, both orally and twice weekly, in patients with myeloma refractory to bortezomib, carfilzomib, lenalidomide, and pomalidomide (quad-refractory disease), with a subset also refractory to an anti-CD38 antibody (penta-refractory disease). The primary end point was overall response rate (ORR). Results Of 79 patients, 48 had quad-refractory and 31 had penta-refractory myeloma. Patients had received a median of seven prior regimens. The ORR was 21% and was similar for patients with quad-refractory (21%) and penta-refractory (20%) disease. Among patients with high-risk cytogenetics, including t(4;14), t(14;16), and del(17p), the ORR was 35% (six of 17 patients). The median duration of response was 5 months, and 65% of responding patients were alive at 12 months. The most common grade ≥ 3 adverse events were thrombocytopenia (59%), anemia (28%), neutropenia (23%), hyponatremia (22%), leukopenia (15%), and fatigue (15%). Dose interruptions for adverse events occurred in 41 patients (52%), dose reductions occurred in 29 patients (37%), and treatment discontinuation occurred in 14 patients (18%). Conclusion The combination of selinexor and dexamethasone has an ORR of 21% in patients with heavily pretreated, refractory myeloma with limited therapeutic options.

Swedish gymnastics has been reduced to a directory of progressive analytical movements intended to form the basis of what is known in French physical education as a global gymnastics. This article explains how Philippe Tissié was inspired by Swedish gymnastics in his development of a hybrid vision between the Swedish method of physical education and the French model that was largely derived from the works of Jean Saint-Martin Amoros and Philippe Sarremejane. The paper demonstrates how Tissié's French gymnastics was not only limited to analytical movements but also included the practice of sports. At the same time, it explains how the creation of this hybrid model meshed scientific findings from life sciences (biology and physiology) with human and social sciences (psychology and sociology). Between 1886 and 1935, Tissié's appropriation, thus, enabled him to structure his conceptions of physical education and to move from the Swedish to the Franco-Swedish method. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

During the twentieth century, outdoor physical education (OPE) gradually integrated with the French education system. Culturally speaking, OPE had to overcome several hurdles because it promoted values such as freedom, initiative and responsibility that were deemed incompatible with the existing educational model. Beyond being a pedagogical tool, the health and welfare implications justified the existence of OPE within the school system, thus changing the meaning of those values. The question of human relations with nature truly facilitated the incorporation of OPE into French educational programmes even if the scope of its development is rather limited today. Some might regret the predominance of a kind of physical activity that conveyed values and was proven to be especially productive in terms of issues related to education, security and respect for the environment. Nevertheless, OPE physical activities found their rightful place within the school system because of the sports facet of the activities.

The presence of “geological” amber (or “succin” in old French monographs) has been reported for several centuries in the Mesozoic deposits of Provence, southeastern France. Diverse amber-bearing sites were inventoried by the authors but their location and stratigraphical context remain unclear for most of them. In the past decades, various data concerning chemistry, palaeontological content and comparison with archaeological discoveries improved our knowledge of the ambers of Provence, but only those of Cretaceous age. The present paper aims at providing a comprehensive description of all the presently known amber-bearing deposits of Provence, including the description of new sites. We highlight the great potential of Provence ambers and allow to consider a wider time range, from the Early Cretaceous to the Miocene.

The Upper Cretaceous sedimentary succession cropping out in the Sainte-Baume Massif (Var, southeastern France) is of late Turonian to Campanian age. There, complex imbrication and rapid evolution in space and time of shallow-marine, fluvio-deltaic and lacustrine environments at the front of the North Provence Durancian uplift occur during the Santonian. Marly and/or sandy strata rich in lignite remains and amber grains are interspersed throughout the Santonian series. According to new in situ collections, the features of the amber grains, and their micro-inclusions, are similar to those found in well-known amber-bearing sites from the Bouches-du-Rhône department. This testifies of a widespread resin-producing tree forests in southeastern France at that time.

The origin of the diatoms still remains enigmatic. Their fossil record is scarce until the Late Cretaceous and great divergences exist between molecular data and the earliest fossil evidence. While molecular data indicate an origin during the Triassic or Early Jurassic, early fossil evidence is only from the Late Jurassic-Early Cretaceous. The discovery of diatoms in French mid-Cretaceous amber by the end of the 2000s already suggested a potential bias in the diatom fossil record as it made older many diatom lineages, the record of which hitherto began at the end of the Cretaceous. The Jurassic/Early Cretaceous fossil record of diatoms is extremely sparse and any new occurrence is important for retracing the evolutionary, palaeogeographical and palaeoenvironmental history of diatoms. Thai amber has yielded a new diatom specimen that has been attributed to the genus Hemiaulus. Fossil assemblages and sedimentological data indicate that Thai amber and its Hemiaulus specimen are Late Jurassic in age. This discovery represents the oldest hitherto known specimen of Hemiaulus and so extends the fossil record of the bipolar diatoms and of the genus Hemiaulus by several dozens of millions of years and brings closer the fossil evidence and molecular data (that estimated an origin of the bipolar diatoms about 150 Ma ago). It reinforces the hypothesis of a pre-Cretaceous fossil diatom records and also supports an origin of the diatoms in shallow coastal environments.

A large number of fossil-rich beds have been located from over 30 km along the Tours-Poitiers High Speed Line (LGV) during earthworks prior to its construction, and in particular amber was collected from Scorbé-Clairvaux (locality of La Bergeonneau) to the north of Poitiers. The paper describes also amber pieces from Châtellerault (locality of La Désirée) discovered during the development of sewage treatment plant along the Vienne river. Lower Cenomanian shelly sandstones and siltstones of Scorbé-Clairvaux contain rare amber pieces associated with seed plants (Frenelopsis sp., Nehvizdya sp., and angiosperm seeds) and a diversified fauna, composed of micro-remains of 27 taxa, comprising elasmobranchs (Haimirichia amonensis Cappetta and Case, 1975, Protolama sp. and Squalicorax sp.), actinopterygians (Enchodus sp. and Pycnodontidae), reptiles including vertebrae the marine snake Simoliophis rochebrunei Sauvage, 1880, some rare helochelydrid plates (cf. Plastremys), teeth of three crocodilian families (Atoposauridae, Goniopholididae and Bernissartiidae) and an undetermined dinosaurian long bone fragment.

A new Cenomanian amber- and plant-bearing deposit has been discovered at Neau, in the Mayenne department (France). The Cenomanian fossiliferous lignites are located in karst filling in a substratum of Cambrian limestones. The amber corresponds mainly to tiny millimetric grains, devoid of arthropod inclusions, but rich in microorganisms, especially the sheated bacteria Leptotrichites resinatus, and containing pollen grains (Classopollis) and wood fibers (Araucariacae or Cheirolepidiaceae). The lignites provide abundant conifer and ginkgoale cuticle fragments (Frenelopsis, Eretmophyllum) and a lot of palynomorphs (e.g. Gleicheniidites senonicus, Cyathidites, Deltoidospora, Appendicisporites and Cicatricosisporites). The chemical signature of the amber suggests it was produced by conifers of the extinct family Cheirolepidiaceae. According to the palynological assemblage, the age of the lignites is upper lower Cenomanian or lower mid Cenomanian. The deposit environment corresponded to the upstream portion of a mangrove or the most inner part of a lagoon.

« Quand je suis arrivée en France, [...] tout ça, au fait, que j'avais vu, j'ai vécu en Pologne, j'ai transmis en France » (Folliot, 22 avril 2017). Cette notion de transmission semble importante pour Jadwiga Folliot, elle-même, lorsqu'elle décrit son parcours handballistique. Elle apparaît même comme un devoir au regard de sa trajectoire de vie. Née en 1953 à Cracovie, en Pologne, Jadwiga Nowak fait partie des meilleures juniors polonaises avant d'intégrer à 33 reprises, l'équipe nationale. Lorsqu'elle arrive en France le 1er décembre 1974, en pleine Guerre froide, des différences majeures transparaissent dans l'organisation du handball, et plus généralement dans la gouvernance du sport, entre la France et la Pologne. A partir de témoignages, de coupures de presse mais également d'archives institutionnelles de la Fédération Française de Handball, nous avons identifié les différents rôles assumés par Jadwiga Folliot dans le développement du handball au sein de l'Association Sportive de Mantes la Jolie, puis du département des Yvelines et plus largement au niveau de l'équipe de France qu'elle va intégrer en décembre 1975.Si elle ne peut importer le système sportif professionnel polonais en France, pays dans lequel le handball est encore amateur, il semble qu'elle ait réussi à importer certains aspects qui ont ensuite permis de hausser le niveau technique non seulement de son équipe de club, l'AS Mantaise, mais aussi et surtout de l'équipe de France féminine de handball. The three volumes of the "French Method of Physical Education" were published by the military school of Joinville-Le-Pont between 1925 and 1927 and became one of the most successful reference materials in France for sport and physical education among school, military and civilian institutions. Several authors studied these manuals, but they focused mainly on their pedagogic eclecticism and philosophical background. They also stressed that the Army accepted to reduce its military goal in order to fulfil the hygienic aims that the country considered crucial in the post-war context. Only recently, however, have new perspectives begun exploring more systematically the French Method in its social, political, gender and international aspects. The aim of this paper is to propose a first synthesis of these works and, together with some new insights, to free the French Method from the purely pedagogic history in which it has long remained within the historiography of education. Reforms made to France's education system structures during the 1960s resulted in a repositioning of academic subjects within study plans. This article looks at three relatively similar subjects (physical sciences, natural sciences and physical education) and throws light on the arguments put forward to defend the purpose of each of them in the educational process. The arguments provided intended not only to establish each subject's legitimacy from mainly economic, social and political points of view, where the aim was to form the future leaders of a modern society, but also from the academic perspective. Indeed, each subject had to position itself within a changed "hierarchy", giving rise to new interdisciplinary issues which contributed to the transformation of French schools.
