2. Latitudinal Profiles of Auroral Forms/Motions and Plasma Properties Based on Simultaneous Image‐Particle Measurements by Reimei in the Midnight Auroral Oval.

Abstract

We present the simultaneous and conjugated auroral emission and particle data obtained by a low‐altitude polar‐orbiting micro‐satellite, Reimei, for elucidating their latitudinal distributions and variations in the nightside auroral oval. Here are reported a few notable examples of the Reimei observations with high time and spatial resolutions, namely ∼120 msec. and ∼1.2 km × 1.2 km for multispectral auroral images and 40 msec. for energy‐pitch angle distributions of electrons and ions with energies of 10 eV–12 keV, respectively. The auroral images show various fine‐scale auroral activities characterized by the following types of auroral forms and variations: faint bands, streaming multiple arcs, shearing arcs, and vortices/curls, which are typical of the latitudinal properties of auroras. The particle analyzer simultaneously observed various properties of electron energy‐pitch angle and latitudinal distributions, and their temporal variations, each of which corresponds to a type of the auroral activities. Their features are summarized below. Reimei repetitively observed inverted‐V signatures of low‐energy (<1 keV) field‐aligned electrons in addition to the higher‐energy (several keV) diffuse electrons in low‐latitude auroral oval. In more active regions at higher latitudes, the dominant energy flux responsible for the multiple‐arc emissions was carried by the well‐known inverted‐V electron precipitation. The rapidly rotating vortices or so‐called curls of fine‐scale discrete auroras near the poleward boundary of the auroral oval were closely associated with the significant energy fluxes of spiky field‐aligned electron bursts with energy‐time dispersions produced by dispersive Alfvén waves. One of the factors affecting the shape stability of space structures during operation is thermal deformation. CFRP, which has a coefficient of thermal expansion more than one order of magnitude smaller than that of metallic materials, is an excellent material for space structures. Therefore, it is expected to beapplied to various high precision space structures such as synthetic aperture radar antennas. However, it has been difficult to verify thermal deformation of such structures with high accuracy on the ground. Therefore, in this study, thermal deformation tests and numerical analyses of CFRP multi channel structure, which are structural members of antennas, were conducted to compare and evaluate them. 8. Low Cost SAR Antenna with Wide Swath and High Ground Resolution

Abstract

This paper describes our developments of SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) antennas for low-cost, wide swath and high ground resolution (0.5-0.25m). The antennas are 1D deployable, plane slot array antennas with a wide elevation beam pattern. RF is fed to each panel with a novel patented technology, non-contact waveguide system between panels. These types of SAR antennas make feasible a newly proposed DiskSat with SAR sensor system. The SAR antenna 600MHz bandwidth in X band for 0.5m SAR resolution is made from carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) for light weight and thermal stability. Furthermore, range resolution improves with wider frequency bandwidth. Our novel technology, corporate feed slot array antenna is applied to the SAR antenna in X band with 1200MHz bandwidth aiming at 0.25m range resolution. Also, for a higher azimuth resolution, a sliding-spotlight SAR observation mode is effective. Then a wide area (20kmx20km) SAR observation with high resolution (0.25m) is briefly discussed.

19. Technical Challenges for Small SAR Satellites with High Performance

Abstract

We have developed a small SAR sensor, Micro X-SAR, compatible with 130 kg small satellite. It is capable of 3-meter resolution SAR image acquisition in strip-map mode and 1-meter resolution SAR image acquisition in sliding spotlight mode. This small SAR sensor was successfully demonstrated in orbit by a private company in 2021, Feb. This paper describes the next technical challenge of small SAR satellite with higher performance. We discuss on several types of SAR mission such as high resolution missions, wide swath missions, and constellation missions. Then we describe the present status of technical challenges to wideband, high power, and mass-productivity.

Abstract

Single event transient (SET) pulse-widths were measured as a function of linear energy transfer (LET) by using pulse capture circuits and simulated with mixed-mode 3-D device simulations. Abstract

Waveforms of digital single-event transients, radiation-induced voltage transients in logic gates, can be observed by connecting two transistors to a target logic gate. Additional transistors monitor voltage transients through their drain currents, which can be measured using the conventional 50-[ohm] transmission-line technique widely used for measuring transient currents in single elementary transistors. Experimental results obtained in pulsed-laser irradiation tests demonstrate the validity of the observation technique and clearly reveal the pulse evolution as a function of the laser pulse energy. Abstract

A scan flip-flop (FF) is designed to observe both single event transient (SET) and single event upset (SEU) soft errors in logic VLSI systems. The SET and SEU soft errors mean the upset caused by latching an SET pulse that originates in combinational logic blocks and the upset caused by a direct ion hit to the FF, respectively. An irradiation test method using the scan FF is proposed to obtain SET and SEU soft-error rates at each FF distributed in logic VLSI systems. A test chip is designed using a 0.2-[micro]m fully-depleted silicon-on-insulator standard cell library. The basic concepts have been validated with Verilog timing simulations. The cell-level implementation costs of the proposed scan FF are estimated to be reasonable. 36. Demonstration of 2.65 / 3.3 Gbit per sec X Band Radiowave Down Link Communications from LEO Small Satellite

Abstract

This paper reports our new communication system and downlink demonstrations with a small satellite of 2.65 Gbps data rate with 64 APSK modulation and 3.3Gbps data rate with 256 APSK modulation by utilizing two circular polarization channels of X band. We have developed an on-board X-band transmitter, an on-board dual circularly polarized-wave antenna with 17dBi gain and >37dB Cross Polarization Discrimination (XPD) and a 10m ground station with 39dB/K of G/T and >37dB XPD for low-crosstalk polarization multiplexing. Since there are not real- time demodulator systems in such high communication speed, the downlinked signals are stored in a data recorder at an antenna site. Afterwards, we decode downlinked signals by using our non-real-time software demodulator. The system was demonstrated in orbit the RAPid Innovative payload demonstration Satellite (RAPIS-1) of JAXA in 2019. We have achieved 2.65 Gbps and 3.3Gbps communication speed in the X-band for LEO satellite at 300 M symbols per second (Msps) and polarization multiplexing of 64APSK (coding rate 4/5) and 256APSK (coding rate 3/4) following DVB-S2X protocol with roll-off factor α=0.05. The communication speeds correspond to of frequency efficiency 8.4 bit/s/Hz and 10.8 bit/s/Hz of frequency utilization efficiency. As far as authors know, these direct downlink communication speeds and frequency utilization efficiencies are the highest ones at present in LEO satellites, excluding bent-pipe communication systems.

Abstract

A table-based technique for estimating single-event transient pulses is evaluated in the most crucial case for bulk MOSFET technologies where an ion penetrates the drain region. A device model of a bulk MOSFET is built in a 2-D numerical device simulation framework, and heavy-ion-induced transient currents flowing through its drain terminal are calculated. From the currents, single-event transient voltage pulses in an inverter are estimated with the table-based estimation technique. The results are compared with ones simulated in the mixed mode with the same device model and circuit configuration. The estimated are comparable to the results in the mixed-mode device simulations. Moreover, the estimation accuracy can be improved using a drain-capacitance compensation technique. An extrapolation technique based on the drain-voltage dependency of heavy-ion-induced transient currents is also presented to reduce the experimental costs for modeling. Abstract

Described is an estimation technique of single event transient voltage pulses in VLSI circuits from heavy-ion-induced transient currents measured in a single MOSFET. Waveforms of the transient voltage pulses are fully estimated by using transient current data obtained in various drain voltage conditions. Modeling of the irradiated device behavior for use in device/circuit simulations is not required. The concept is validated using a 2-D mixed-mode device simulation. Abstract

Current components of heavy-ion-induced transient currents in a 0.2-[micro]m fully-depleted SOI MOSFET are analyzed in the time domain. The analysis demonstrates that the transient currents have another slow-decay current component that is different from the two conventional current components: a prompt discharge current and a slow-decay parasitic bipolar current. The slow-decay component revealed here is a flow of deposited carriers stored in the body region to maintain quasi-neutrality, and it drastically widens the transient pulse. Abstract

We proposed a new architecture of antenna, transmitter and receiver feeding configuration for small synthetic aperture radar (SAR) that is compatible with 100kg class satellite. Promising applications are constellations of earth observations together with optical sensors, and responsive, disaster monitoring missions. The SAR antenna is a deployable, passive, honeycomb panel antenna with slot array that can be stowed compactly. RF (radio frequency) instruments are in a satellite body and RF signal is fed to a deployable antenna through non-contacting choke flanges at deployable hinges. This paper describes its development strategy and the present development status of the small spaceborne SAR based on this architecture.

Abstract

In this paper, we discuss the design scheme of a waveguide feeder for a wideband rectangular parallel plate slot-array antenna for a high resolution synthetic aperture radar sensor on-board a 100kg micro-satellite, scheduled to be launched in 2020. We analyze the performance of the edge-feed system with two waveguide feeders for each antenna panel. HFSS simulation results show that the edge-feed system reduces the undesired Poynting vector tilt in the parallel plate and achieves good antenna gain and efficiency with larger bandwidth, thereby giving it an edge over the conventional end-feed system However, the two-feeder antenna system increases the weight and active reflection and due to asymmetric design, phase opposition is difficult to achieve, thereby leading to structural complexity.

Abstract

This paper investigated the possibility of using an $X$ -band traveling-wave antenna for application in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) on a small-satellite platform. A rectangular slotted parallel-plate antenna panel capable of radiating dual polarization over the same physical aperture was selected for this purpose. The design procedure, which provides for an optimal antenna pattern in a SAR application, is described. A meta-heuristic multiobjective optimization algorithm was applied to synthesize an appropriate far-field pattern, which enhances the quality of the SAR image. Subsequently, the optimization results were used to build a more realistic model of the antenna panel in electromagnetic simulation software. An antenna panel was fabricated, and its electrical characteristics were measured. The fabricated prototype weighed 1310 g and measurements showed nearly 50% aperture efficiency for both circular polarizations [34.6-dBic right-hand circular polarized (RHCP), 34.5-dBic left-hand circular polarized (LHCP), and peak gain at 9.65 GHz], with low side-lobes. A beam shift of 2.1° was observed between the RHCP and LHCP beams at the design center frequency and was later analyzed to be the result of an error in the modeling of the adhesive layer.

Abstract

This paper presents the proto-flight model results of X band synthetic aperture radar for small satellites including the RF power amplifier, high speed data storage/transmission system, and the ground SAR response test results. The specifications of SAR performance are single polarization SAR with 3m ground resolution for strip map mode. 1 m ground resolution can be achieved with sliding spot light mode under condition of limited value of NESZ at 600km altitude orbit. The data down link is high speed X band down link with 2-3 Gbps. In May, 2019, 2.5Gbps down link with 64APSK modulation in dual polarization channels was demonstrated by RAPIS-1 Satellite.
