Abstract

The current understanding of light hypernuclei, which are sub-atomic nuclei with strangeness, is being challenged and studied in detail by several European research groups and collaborations. In recent years, studies of hypernuclei using high-energy heavy ion beams have reported unexpected results on the three-body hypernuclear state 3ΛH, named the hypertriton. For some time, reports of a shorter lifetime and larger binding energy than what was previously accepted have created a puzzling situation for its theoretical description; this is known as the "hypertriton puzzle". With the inclusion of the most recent experimental measurements, the current status of the hypertriton puzzle is evolving. Additionally, the possible neutral bound state of a Λ hyperon with two neutrons, nnΛ, has raised questions about our understanding of the formation of light hypernuclei either in bound or resonance states. These results have initiated several ongoing experimental programs all over the world to study these three-body hypernuclear states precisely. We are studying these light hypernuclear states by employing heavy ion beams at 2AGeV on a fixed carbon target with the WASA detector system and the Fragment Separator (FRS) at GSI. The WASA-FRS experimental campaign was performed during the first quarter of 2022, and this paper presents a short overview of the campaign and how it seeks to tackle the hypertriton and nnΛ puzzles. Data analysis is ongoing, and several preliminary results will be reported.

Abstract

Hypernuclear production cross sections have been deduced for the first time with induced reaction of heavy ion beam on fixed target and by means of the invariant mass method by the HypHI Collaboration exploiting the reaction of 6Li + 12C at 2A GeV or sNN=2.70 GeV. A production cross section of 3.9±1.4 μb for 3ΛH and of 3.1±1.0 μb for 4ΛH respectively in the projectile rapidity region was inferred as well as the total production cross section of the Λ hyperon was measured and found to be equal to 1.7±0.8 mb. A global fit based on a Bayesian approach was performed in order to include and propagate statistical and systematic uncertainties. Production ratios of 3ΛH/4ΛH, 3ΛH/Λ and 4ΛH/Λ were included in the inference procedure. The strangeness population factors S$_{3}$ and S$_{4}$ of 3ΛH and 4ΛH respectively were extracted. In addition, the multiplicities of the Λ hyperon, 3ΛH, and 4ΛH together with the rapidity and transversal momentum density distributions of the observed hypernuclei were extracted and reported.

Abstract

In 2007 the Mainz Microtron MAMI has been upgraded to 1.5 GeV electron beam energy, crossing the energy threshold for open strangeness production. The strangeness quantum number, as carried by the strange quark, provides valuable information on the contribution of individual quark flavours to hadronic processes. Theoretically, the strange quark with its rest energy of order 150MeV is particularly interesting because it can neither be treated as a massless nor as a heavy quark. Experimentally, an instrument of central importance for the charged kaon electro-production off the proton or light nuclei at MAMI is the magnetic spectrometer Kaos that was installed recently and is now routinely operated by the A1 collaboration.

Since 2008 the magnetic spectrometer Kaos, dedicated to the detection of charged kaons, is operating at the 1.5 GeV electron beam of MAMI at the Institut für Kernphysik in Mainz, Germany. The strangeness programme performed in 2008–9 is addressing some important issues in the field of elementary kaon photoelectro-production reactions. Abstract

The unstable neutron-deficient $^{108}$Sn isotope has been studied in inverse kinematics by intermediate-energy Coulomb excitation using the RISING/FRS experimental setup at GSI. This is the highest Z nucleus studied so far with this method. Its reduced transition probability B (E2;0$^{+}_{gs}$) -> 2$^{+}_{1}$ has been measured for the first time. The extracted B(E2) value of 0.230(57)e$^{2}$ b$^{2}$ has been determined relative to the known value in the stable $^{112}$Sn isotope. The result is discussed in the framework of recent large-scale shell model calculations performed with realistic effective interactions. The roles of particle-hole excitations of the $^{100}$Sn core and of the Z=50 shell gap for the E2 polarization are investigated.

Abstract

Abstract: A statistical combination of the experimental lifetime estimations available in the literatures is performed for 3 Λ H and 4 Λ H, including several recent measurements. The combined average values of the lifetime for 3 Λ H and 4 Λ H are respectively and with a reduced of 0.89 and 0.48. A new insight into the lifetime estimation of the HypHI Phase 0 experiment by a Bayesian approach is also presented. In this approach, several different prior distributions including the combination of previous lifetime data and a Jeffrey prior are used. The principal mode and the smallest credible interval at 68% of the posterior distribution, given by the prior belief of the previous measurements, are and respectively for 3 Λ H and 4 Λ H. The two employed approaches have revealed that the lifetime of hypernuclei 3 Λ H and 4 Λ H can be shorter than the Λ–hyperon lifetime. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The first 2+ states in 134Ce and 136Nd and the second 2+ state in 136Nd were populated by Coulomb excitation at relativistic energies, and γ-rays were measured using the RISING setup at GSI. For 134Ce an indication of the excitation to the second 2+ state was observed. This experiment performed for the first time Coulomb excitation to second 2+ states with rare isotope beams at relativistic energies. For 136Nd the , , and values relative to the previously known value for 134Ce are determined as 81(10), 11(3) and 180(92) W.u., respectively. Abstract: The first excited states in 54,56,58Cr were populated by Coulomb excitation at relativistic energies and γ rays were measured using the RISING setup at GSI. For 56Cr and 58Cr the values relative to the previously known value for 54Cr are determined as 8.7(3.0) and 14.8(4.2) W.u., respectively. The results are consistent with a subshell closure at neutron number which was already indicated by the higher energy of the state in 56Cr. Recent large-scale shell model calculations using effective interactions reproduce the trend in the excitation energies, but fail to account for the minimum in the values at . NUBA Conference Series 1: Nuclear Physics and Astrophysics -- 15 September 2014 through 21 September 2014 -- -- 111816, Light hypernuclei have been studied by using induced reactions of 6Li projectiles bombarded on the natural carbon target by means of the invariant mass method, and 3 ?H and 4 ?H hypernuclei as well as ?-hyperons are produced and identified. Significance values of 3 ?H, 4 ?H and ? are respectively 4.7?, 4.9? and 6.7?. By analyzing decay vertices of 3 ?H, 4 ?H and ? by means of unbinned maximum likelihood fitting their lifetime values have been deduced to be 183+42 -32 ps, 140+48 -33 ps and 262+56 -43 ps, respectively. In addition, signals appeared for the d+?- and t+?- final states in the analyses on invariant mass and lifetime. Those signals have suggested a possible bound state of two neutrons with ?, 3 ?n. It has also been revealed for the first time that the lifetime of 3 ?H is significantly shorter than that of ?, which is consistent to the statistical analyses including all the lifetime data reported in the past. However, there is no theoretical model to explain the short lifetime of 3 ?H as well as the existence of the 3 ?n bound state.
